Review Fergus - Malvern

Lovely local little cafe, with friendly staff, cosy! Rear courtyard is spacious, and front bench made it easy to come alone or with a group. All day lunch menu is great for those that want a big start, and specials are always interesting!

Great menu and delicious food. A lovely environment with a covered/heated courtyard. Good service too. Would recommend

Cappuccino okay - too milky for my taste. Had the smashed avo. All right. Notes for next time - try the lunch menu.

This is a great neighbourhood cafe. There is a fantastic spacious covered courtyard that welcomes dogs. The coffee is consistently great and the service is efficient and welcoming. The food is delicious and the menu is tempting. This is a versatile, lovely cafe where you can choose to linger if you wish or have a quick lunch break.

Had the mot awful experience here. Were treated like we were sub-human, stared at, ignored and dismissed. Had a booking via website in advance as we were brining children. Friend arrived first and told no booking existed, thats fine, as the place was empty anyway. The man at the counter (im assuming is the owner or at least manager ) was abrasive and rally just didnt care to assist us. Told kitchen was closed which we were surprised at but were ok with - still standing in the middle of the cafe and not offered seating - said we would still get drinks and then made way to back - coffee was watery, iced coffee warm and kids milkshakes took ages to come out. paid the $36 for the drinks and showed the man the booking confirmation incase there were errors with the website and he was not aware of. The conversation was rude and made me feel awkward. Said thank you as we were leaving and again was just stared at with a disgusted look. Honestly have never been made to feel so unwelcome in my life. You never know what a person may be going through at any given moment - a smile or a polite word wont kill you - be kind

One of the best places to go to breakfast/lunch. Really friendly staff, good food at a good price, great portion sizes and an easy location to access from public transport. Fergus is one of Malvern East’s best cafes in my opinion would highly recommend. Pictured below is the smashed avo (+ egg) on normal and gluten-free bread.

Gorgeous cafe in East Malvern. I had the mushroom toast here on a busy Monday morning. It was presented beautifully with a great selection of mushrooms. The coffee was good, service was great, I really love the decor relaxed vibe and courtyard at the back. The perfect location for brunch with mates or a small get together with family and friends.

The brunch game at Fergus is strong. The team here has everything down pat – charming service, excellent food and outstanding coffee. With a cute and cosy courtyard, you’ll be hard-pressed not to enjoy your experience here. The Shakshuka is a must order here. Hearty, rich and especially comforting for the colder days ahead. Plenty of chorizo and lamb rosemary sausage makes this an incredibly filling dish, and the piquant sauce is just divine. The lime yoghurt balances out this heavy dish with a subtle citrusy tang, and you’ll find yourself lapping up every last bit of the sauce. The Club Sandwich aims to please. Layers upon layers of fresh and tasty fillings, and the combination of Dijon mustard and tomato relish gave this sanga a sharp and sweet kick. The hot and crunchy chips keeps you coming back for more, and provides a good contrast to the soft and juicy sanga. Simple but effective is the French Toast. Soft and fluffy bread, crushed pistachio, poached pears, mascarpone and maple syrup makes for a wonderful combination of taste and texture. Nutty, with a touch of caramelised sweetness, and so moreish. The Fergus Benedict and Pulled Pork Tacos got the thumbs up from my friends, as did the fantastic coffees. A faultless experience from start to finish.

The staff were busy but even so they were helpful, coffee was good and consistent. And the breakfast was really good, looked small but was really filling. Sick as hell name too. Jus' Sayin'

Had the best lamb shanks at Fergus yesterday! It was served with potato gnocchi, they were like pillows of clouds! Amazing and delish dish, thanks Fergus!

4.0 Very Good

We made a booking here and although it was a cold day it was nice out back where they had a sheltered outdoor space. It was dog friendly and even had a corner for kids to play.

It was also my first coffee in a long time, I did wish it was slightly more stronger but I did enjoy the smoothness of my latte.

I ordered their shakshuka which consisted of baked egg, beans, chorizo, lamb rosemary sausage and topped with lime yoghurt. It was a very hearty meal and probably the best shakshuka I’ve had to date despite the egg not being runny (it never seems to be). Although quite savoury it had a lovely sweetness, I only wished that there was more Turkish bread to accompany the dish.

Solid brunch spot in the south eastern suburbs, make sure you book a table as it was at capacity (20 customers) when we were there.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking Fergus is just what you can see from the front door. While internally there is a large communal table, window bar and several individual tables – perfect for solo dining, a quick coffee, or brunch on a quite day, continue through the store to their spacious hidden courtyard out back where you can enjoy a more relaxing dining experience.

I visited Fergus with some friends for brunch. My strong skinny almond lattes were nice. I won’t comment on the service as this was an invitation.

Situated in a bright undercover courtyard this was a great cafe outside and nice and bright inside the cafe facing the street.

I tried the Fergus Benedict which was perfectly cooked poached eggs w spinach, grilled bacon, a really yummy hollandaise sauce, on a crispy rosti w fresh apple radish salad.

This was a solid dish, the potato rosti was crispy and crunchy.

My friends enjoyed their food and some of the dishes looked extremely impressive.

Located in leafy Malvern, Fergus draws in the crowds with an honest and unpretentious brunch offering.

The menu is extensive and boasts options that suit everyone. Think nourishing bowls, hearty mushroom medleys atop crusty bread and yummy sweet treats.

As expected of any great Melbourne café, coffee is great and poured by adept baristas. There are also plenty of drink options for those not so caffeine-inclined.

This place is such a lovely brunch spot. We really like the courtyard area in the back, which makes our brunch much more enjoyable. We had the shakshuka, pulled pork tacos and prawn linguine. All the dishes were really good, the highlight has got the be the shakshuka. The flat bread dipped in the sauce was just heaven.

We really recommend this place!

Friendly service, deliciously fresh dishes and drinks, cute courtyard. Loved everything about this cafe!

We ordered the Protein Bowl with added smoked salmon and avo, the Bircher Muesli, the Zucchini & Corn Fritters and the Berry Acai smoothie. Every dish was packed with flavour and went down very well 😊😊.

Will be back again soon!

I'm so glad that I discovered this gorgeous cafe in the leafy streets of Malvern East. Fergus is all white brick walls and warm timbers, with plenty of natural light, comfortable seating and a relaxed vibe. The staff and baristas are excellent. So friendly and welcoming, making Fergus the perfect retreat for locals. The cafe was packed full when I dined here just before Christmas, so it's evidently quite popular. Being the festive season, I started with a crisp glass of wine, while hubby went for the iced coffee. This was one of those marvels where you pour hot milk over an iced coffee sphere, creating the perfect blend for an iced drink. So delicious. The cappuccinos were also amazing, so the barista really knows his stuff. The menu is quite diverse, and there are some delicious options to choose from. We went with some super tasty corn fritters, and this dish was a super generous serve with four perfectly round fritters sitting atop steamed spinach, and topped with smashed avo and a gorgeous poached egg. This was an impressive tower, and the fritters were so crispy but tender, with great seasoning and excellent flavour. I couldn't resist the amazing French toast, as it's one of my favourite things to order for brunch. This version was so soft, not too eggy, and came with cream and a gorgeous poached pear, and an ample sprinkling of my favourite nuts... pistachios. A jug of maple syrup was great for some extra sweetness, and I really loved Fergus' take on this cafe classic. It was such a pleasure to dine at this fantastic gem of a cafe, and I really believe that Fergus has everything going for it. So many fantastic food choices, amazing coffee, a liquor licence and of course a pretty, comfortable space to relax in. The staff are the loveliest people around, and I can't wait to return to try more of their fabulous menu.

This little cafe is a goldmine, super busy but attentive staff. Food came out hot and quick and was delicious. Lots of street parking options, little outdoor seating area. Clean bright space that’s been thoughtfully designed. Recommend!

Came here during lunch to do some work and chill out over a nice meal, cute little front with an (open) hall leading to more seating outside. Staff friendly and service is good.
Little overpriced although the freshness and quality was good. Had the super bowl with added salmon, although it was a little small for my liking, the flavours were nice. Would have had a better look if the bowl was smaller so it at least looked like you were getting more. Coffee was decent too.

We came here with our 1.5 year old baby girl and loved it for the following reasons:
1) Cute little cafe with a great location, parking available outside and along the small streets.
2) Well presented and delicious food. I ordered the chicken burger whilst my husband ordered the big breakfast, he said it was the best rosti he’s ever had.
3) Super baby friendly! The friendly staff made sure our daughter had paper cups and straws to drink from and provided her with crayons and coloring pages for entertainment. They even have a baby change table in the toilets!
Would highly recommend this place to family and friends :)

We can’t say we weren’t disappointed by this meal. The mediocre baked goods and lazy execution of the Prawn Linguini definitely put us off.
The saving grace? Above-average coffee and a hearty, though unspectacular Shakshuka.
Beatrice
Came for quick takeaway drinks after our doctor's appointment. Nice, cosy atmosphere. Staff were friendly. C said his mocha wasn't too sweet which was good. I loved it when they do a good soy Chai. Extra point for not using powdered Chai! Hopefully we'll be around this side of town again for the food which I'm sure will be lovely.

We dined at Fergus on this cool Saturday autumn morning. Quite a charming interior and an excellent rear courtyard we settled on a table in the front and started with a couple of deliciously hot and creamy lattes.

Lots of tempting items on this recently updated menu and we ordered comfort food in the form of hot cakes (buttermilk pancakes) and the big breakfast.

My pancakes were delicious, light in texture and covered in a generous quantity of vanillary mascarpone, berries and kiwi fruit with some puckery passionfruit on the side. The ratio of the toppings to pancake is perfect, ensuring each bite has dairy and fruit.

The big breakfast had the most perfectly poached eggs with super bright orange yolks, sautéed button mushrooms, bacon, spinach and the most amazing herbylicious rosti. (I could have eaten a plate full of the rosti alone, the flavour, the texture, yum.

We had the jack rose juice (a winning combo of strawberries, apple and mint) to finish off an enjoyable early brunch.

Thanks so much for having us in.
Good Food Good Mood
We were invited to Fergus today and got to try some of the new menu items. I went for the açai bowl which was an excellent choice on a sunny day. It was a little runnier than I expected but it wasn’t icy and had good flavour. I enjoyed the coconut flakes on top too.

We also had the hot cakes which were colourful, super fluffy and topped with beautiful fresh fruit. They also had a lovely little passion fruit coulis on the side as well as maple syrup and ice cream. This is great for everyone as you can customise to your own taste. Also a shoutout to the delicious chai latte I had, the perfect balance of sweetness and the right amount of aromatics. Exceptional coffee too.

Original review
We found ourselves at Fergus yesterday to catch up with friends for brunch before visiting at the nearby Cabrini hospital. I was quite sceptical since I’d never heard of it before and given we were choosing on convenience rather than reputation but it vastly exceeded my expectations. The space was huge with a lovely warm atmosphere and buzzing courtyard area.

Two of us got smashed avocado (one with a poached egg and one sans) which was quite a sizeable portion. While a simple dish it was presented well and very tasty. The other two got chilli scramble one with bacon and one without. This was another generously sized dish and again visually impressive wth the requisite edible flowers. Definitely one to check out if you are in the area and even if you’re not it’s well worth a detour
Hungry Little Dinosaur
Cute little cafe with great food! Had the breakfast board which was very satisfying - a little sampling of everything and I loved that they melted my butter for me. The potato rosti was huge and had lots of smoked salmon. Great portions and really yummy! Will definitely return!

Nice quiet spot for a great feed on a Sunday morning! Breakky board is great value and has all the best bits in one. At around $20 including a juice, it’s awesome value. Quick service and friendly staff. Would recommend!

Fergus cafe is one of those lovely local Melbourne cafes that not a lot of people have heard about, but is definitely worth visiting if you're ever in the area. Located in Malvern East, this spacious and trendy local cafe serves a great cup of your much needed coffee and a delicious all day breakfast and lunch menu that is sure to satisfy the whole family. At Fergus cafe they offer a fresh seasonal menu that covers a great selection of all your favourite classic Melbourne brunch dishes and so much more.

This is our new local, we love the food and service. The courtyard is wonderful too. Never disappointed with breakfast or lunch here and the coffee is good.

👍🏻 decorations : will seat in the courtyard area next time! Lovely area! 👍🏻 strong coffee 👍🏻 food with nice presentation! Friendly staffs! Will be back!

The coffee was very hot and nice. We didn’t get food as it took 20 mins for our coffee order to be taken. I noticed a lot of the staff were wearing jumpers which was strange because I’m sweating up a storm if I’m working?

We sat out in the courtyard and it was lovely, people brought there dogs which is so. Ice to see. Interesting food in a good way. Service is absolutely terrible, but I guess that’s what you expect on weekends when it’s run by teenagers.

Casual but efficient service.
Strong coffee.
Very tasty food I had the slow cooked lamb with chickpeas, pomegranate and labne. It was very good and THANKFULLY came WITHOUT the obligatory, predictable, clumsy cooking spices (garlic and onion).
The crispy pitta it came with was (sadly) very overdone, close to burnt, but I'm not too fussed as I don't really eat grains but its worth noting.
Had they added fresh mint this dish would have been perfectly balanced. The lamb was amazing.
My partner had ham hock with eggs and hollandaise, I had a bite !!
it was great, the ham was tasty without being mega salty and the hollandaise was devine. Seems the chefs here avoid over seasoning which is the mark of a great, balanced cook. Ever notice how often you go out for lunch or dinner and spend the next 6+ hours feeling ultra thirsty. Thankfully it didn't happen here.
Nice atmosphere, a few blocks away from the main shops in Malvern so parking not a problem.

Clean facilities.

Went into Fergus last Saturday, which had a great display of wraps/sandwiches, I landed on the spicy chicken baguette which was 👌👌👌. The coffee was also great having a nice single origin magic, my friend ordered the fritters which also looked great. Staff was friendly and on top of it and the vibe of the cafe was good, definitely would recommend and will be back👍👍

Best sandwiches in town! Coffee great, staff were amazing. Must go!!!

I went down early one morning to have breakfast with my girlfriend and couldn't have asked for a better 4 year anneversiary good out of this world! Must go for the morning salad!

Go to Fergus daily before work and uni, coffee is consistently amazing and the staff are super friendly! Highly recommend to everyone in the area or even passing by for a quick eat

Great brunch/lunch spot. Can always rely on Fergus for a quality coffee. Also great function space we hosted a surprise hens party there and the location was perfect! Staff were accommodating and the food supplied was delicious. Couldn't recommend it enough!
Pastry.loving.foodie
Fergus presents its charm from the get-go; the single fronted building utilises its narrow frontage by opting for primarily glass and wood in order to allow each individual to notice the airiness and space within the cafe. The courtyard is lovely as well, however genuine plant wall hangings and grass would have looked more authentic.

We ordered a coffee, iced chocolate (alongside the meal), soft shell crab burger and the beef burger. No complaints about coffee from my partner, however.. my iced chocolate never arrived :( the crab burger was very disappointing - the slaw was very bland, quite underseasoned and perhaps required a bit more of a kick - an umami or spicy-based addition such as sriracha would have made a difference. The crab was also rather oily, perhaps prepared in another method as opposed to deep frying it? The beef burger was your standard burger.

Fergus has its potential; given this is not the first owner it looks as thought the current ones have made a step in the right direction. We would love to return to see if we the breakfast menu lives up to its beautiful instagram photos!
Just A Girl Who Loves Food
Staff were very friendly and thoroughly enjoyed the food I ordered. Was very tasty and definitely will go back. The location itself is great and although the cafe is quite small, it was still very enjoyable.

Ended up at Fergus as I was meeting my brother in East Malvern who asked if I knew somewhere we could eat. Using Zomato as my guide, I found Fergus. The lunch menu is quite small and ended up getting the lamb linguini. Really impressed with it and thought the lamb & pasta were well cooked and delicious.
The coffee was good enough that I got two...
The service was a little off. Combination of really friendly waitress, aloof waiter, waiter that delivered food and waitress that seem short and not overly pleasant. Not bad service but just felt like a mixed bag of fruit. Either way, I think its a good option for those around that part of East Malvern/Glen Iris.

I was house sitting in Malvern East and being the person I am I was excited at the prospect of exploring the local cuisine 😜. Fergus looked promising, with its modern interior and interesting name I knew I was in for good coffee. I enjoyed both the smashed Avo and my cappuccino. However, the avocado was overpriced for the serving size and also considering it did not include an egg. Overall however, I would like to go back and try one of their cakes and also for another coffee!
Cara
Had the smashed Avocado and feta with poached egg added a hash brown because we were hungry but absolutely didn't need it as the meal size was very generous. Everything was fresh and well cooked and the coffee was fantastic! Will def be coming back again!
Snackloverbaby
I had never even noticed this play until my friend suggested it for breakfast! It's pretty tucked away at the end of a strip of shops but it was absolutely bustling the morning we came.
Good coffee and good food! We were served by a fairly scattered brained waiter, but then it was a Sunday morning and I got the feeling he was in pretty poor shape from the night before. Otherwise rated the experience. Would recommend if you're in the area.
Shaun
One of my fav places to grab a coffee on the weekend. Tried their lunch the other day and it was good! Had the hash with fried egg and bacon which was fantastic. One of the best hash around!!! For which I am giving a 4.
Heidi
Checked out Fergus last day with a group of friends, love it when you can book a table for brunch! Tucked away on wattletree road, it's a lovely cafe with friendly staff. I had the breakfast bowl with bacon, a poached egg, kale, beans, broccolini and chili jam! The chilli jam is amazing!
Kate Dougherty
Casual little cafe with a menu filled with brunch classics. Service was friendly and the cafe itself is well designed- tables aren't too close together and the noise levels don't get too high. I ordered the eggs benedict which came with 2 poached eggs, ham hock and green hollandaise. It was a fairly standard version of eggs benedict but it was still tasty and the ham hock was especially delicious. My only comment was that the toast was possibly a little too hard and crunchy.
Bridget Thompson
Coffee was fantastic. Food was fresh and delicious. Some really good combos on the menus. It was hard to choose. Had the chicken salad and french toast with maple bacon. Really good tunes and wait staff were very friendly and welcoming. Service was some of the best I've had anywhere. Love this place. Will come back for sure!
Herman
Ordered coffee and a side of chips on a Saturday afternoon, staff seemed more concerned with chatting to one another than actually doing their jobs. Coffee was okay, although a little mild for my taste but this may be personal preference. The bowl of chips was supposed to be coated in rosemary (they were not) and when they arrived they were soggy, oily poorly fried just stock standard frozen chips. We only ate a couple and had to leave the rest because the amount of oil made us feel sick. I have my suspicions that these were re-fried. Would not recommend

FABULOUS COFFEE!! Where have you guys been all my life?! Had breakfast and TWO coffees here this morning because we just couldn't help ourselves. You've got a seriously high quality operation going on here. Massive double thumbs up. Will be back and bring friends!!!
Chelsey Ramos
Come here twice now for coffee and am happy to rate it high because the coffee was amazing. Can't wait to come back for food and some more coffee. Service was great but a smile wouldn't go a miss by some of the staff ☺️
Borderline Sunshine
I've been to fergus multiple times, it's my favourite local place to come to for breakfast or coffee. The service is always fantastic, everyone is so lovely and everything I've ordered has been so delicious. Today I had the Mexican smashed avo, which must be a new variation of their normal smashed avo and this was SO GOOD! It was spicy, it was tangy, it came with 3 pieces of toast instead of the usual 2 at every other place and there was so much avocado! Also those poached eggs were perfectly runny and so tasty. Good on you fergus, you definetely stay in my number 1 local place to come. You're the best!
Ralph
I asked for a egg and bacon roll at 11:50am only to be told no it's too busy for that now. I kindly asked can you go ask the chef he alright and another lady came up and I asked the same thing her reply was its way to busy for them to put that together and it will be at least a 15 minute wait.
Personally I think that I won't be coming back I am not asking for a beef Wellington it's only a egg and bacon roll and the way she said it to was so rude. Considering I got my order in 8 minutes. You could of done it you just did not want to.
To be told no it's too busy is somewhat shocking if you can't do things on your menu don't put it on. Sorry you can't have eggs on toast we are too busy with food right now.
AperolSpritzer
One of my favourite cafes, located in a little shopping strip in Malvern East. Great courtyard out the back which is perfect on a sunny day with enough space for those of us with a pram. Plus a great menu - the pumpkin and corn fritters are delicious, I don't even need to look at the menu anymore!
The Star Spark
Fergus is fantastic! I'm a regular, I just can't keep away. They food is perfect, they have a great balance of options on their menu, the portion sizes are just right. The food always comes out fresh and looking stunning. The coffee is GREAT! It doesn't matter if you are just grabbing a take away coffee and a muffin, meeting someone for afternoon tea, or sitting down for a beautiful lunch- Fergus will exceed your expectations (and then some!). Its also a great place to just go by yourself and read a book or the newspaper, or get some work done too. The music adds to the overall ambiance. I think I've pretty much met all the staff, and they are always smiling, helpful and accommodating. There are a few different seating options too, you can sit on bar stools at the windows which can be very pleasant watching the world go by, or on the big beautiful communal table. They also have a little booth section, as well as just standard stables and chairs. They even have a courtyard out the back!

What a terrific menu here with so much to tempt. I went for the veggie fritters with a poached egg, avo, yogurt and salad items. Delish. The coffee and service was pretty good I recommend.

Went Fergus for Saturday lunch.

I had the pulled lamb shoulder. The lamb was very tender, and had nice smoky flavour. Everything on the plate worked well, and I really enjoyed it. The portion was generous for the price.

My son ordered Wagyu burger. He liked the beetroots in it, and enjoyed both burger and chips.

Their cappuccino with single origin beans was amazing!! It was very strong, and had a beautiful fresh aroma. It was one of the best coffee I've had in Melbourne. If you like strong coffee, I highly recommend their coffee. They have house blend beens coffee too.

Service was quick and friendly.

I am happy to add this cafe to my favourite cafe list.
Astrogirl
I'm not going to lie. Fergus is my favourite cafe. Big statement? Yep. But the secret here is consistency. There are lots of cafes in Melbourne that do great food and coffee, but not many that are consistently excellent regardless of who is behind the coffee machine. The coffee itself is quite unique in flavour- they use Maling Room beans and they give a slightly unusual, almost savoury flavour to their coffee. To boot, you can almost always walk in and get a table inside or in their lovely and large courtyard. Love these guys!!!
JustASlice
What a lovely delight out in the leafy green burbs :)

Went into Fergus for Sunday brunch. What was awesome firstly, was that we could call ahead and book a table (which is not that common for anywhere good in Melbourne really on a weekend). The lovely girl I spoke to said they were busy but she would be happy to accommodate and that she did. We got there and were seated onto a table straight away.

Sat out the back in the cute, quiet and charming little courtyard and enjoyed some delicious coffees. Between us we ordered the ham hock w/ poachies and hollandaise, the morning salad and the fruit and nut muesli. Wowzers!

Amazing meals that tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared. Serving size was perfect, the meals came out fast (note the restaurant was bustling with Sunday brunch lovers). Staff were really friendly and all over it.

Will be back again soon! Thanks Fergus :)

Love love love ! Go to place for breakfast and lunch. Awesome cafe with a great atmosphere and friendly staff ! :) My favorite combination is the fritters with salmon and a soy flat white. Thanks Fergus ! Xo

This morning was my first visit to Fergus, after many an instagram stalk. It's a favourite of my friends and I have to say I was not disappointed!
It took forever for me to decide what to eat, but eventually decided on the fritters - fresh, smooth from avocado, tangy lemon and a yoghurt-y sauce! I'd definitely recommend. It's just missing some halloumi and then they'd be perfect in my opinion... :-P
Chai latte was good too. :-) I prefer fresh chai latte though.

This hidden gem is a great place to go especially on Sun when you not sure where to go?. They have seating inside and outside, the staff are so friendly and the food is great!.. great coffee, have been a few times now and staff have remembered my order!!! Lov it! I find some dishes a little high in price for what you get otherwise would have given a 4 out of 5.. but the quality, variety and service is great and that will keep me coming back 😊

Went here the other day and I enjoy the place. The service is good! I ate pumpkin corn fritters. Its quite different from what i imagined. I thought the fritters would be a solid piece of fritter but apparently its not(the inside) maybe its because of the pumpkin. And it is not that crispy too but it is a unique food.
I think there something wrong with the floor. whenever someone is walking around me, I can feel like my whole body is shaking. So its not quite comfortable. You can physically feel that people is walking around you. However, i still enjoy my meal. Maybe i should try other menu next time. Cheers ! 😊

Lovely cafe with a quiet and sunny courtyard. Friendly and well presented staff who are quick to approach and take orders. Fantastic coffee (different varieties) with Soy, Almond options. Great fresh food and salads without having an extensive menu. McFergus brioche breakfast roll is a big hit. Clean toilets. Service wonderful and young and fresh faced friendly people serving. Highly recommend.
Emily
Had brunch here with a friend on a Saturday morning. The bircher muesli is really yummy and they make a mean chai latte. Service was friendly even when they were busy and under the pump

Having seen the mixed reviews we wanted the give this place a go. Unfortunately it did not live up to expectations, Luke warm coffee and the scrambled eggs with chili and chorizo was very oily.
CoffeeSavedMe
So, i really needed a coffee and after a stop at the Post Office i headed into Fergus. What a peaceful little cafe. I walked straight in and looked at the specials board, there were some really authentic dishes on there, which made me yearn for them. However, cause i was rushing i decided i'd do a take out and i ordered a smashed avo and two coffee's one for myself, the other for my partner, and tell you what the coffee tasted fantastic, we ate the smashed avo on our way to work and it was a nice big serve of toast avo-feta and a sweet yet hot chilli jam-brilliant taste, was so consumed by the jams taste. It makes my taste buds tingle. Now, i think i've found another hub to stack coffees from, whats even better is the rapid quick service, stunning staff and great smiles. That makes a happy me!

Our family had brunch today at Fergus, which is a local for us. Food was adequate. Service was very poor. The staff were funky young things who were either inexperienced or far more interested in gathering behind the counter to talk amongst themselves than pay consistent attention to customers. We will not return. There are so many other options for us to choose in our area.

Bircher Muesli. It was unlike any bircher muesli I have had. Very thick in consistency with lots of texture with fresh apple, pepitas and freshly grated coconut. Visually it was amazing.
Marc
Snooty staff serving bad coffee. Don't bother.
Coffee Bean
Nice cafe well set out but staff are terrible . Service slow and you feel like they are doing you a favour by being there . Sorry I spent my money to help pay you jokers . Learn some customer service . Won't be back
Martin
Hidden Treasure. The Bircher muesli was a very generous size and full of flavour.Coffee was excellent ,hot and aromatic. Will return.

...Fergus was the first place that I have ever been so disappointed with, that I have sent back food and refused to allow them to make amends. Good location, nice fit out & the right idea just isn’t enough these days. I really wanted to like Fergus, I tried so hard to like it, I even gave it a second chance but both times I left bitterly disappointed. Fergus located at 301 Wattletree Road, Malvern East, an ideal spot that has been desperate for a cafe. The demographic is perfect for a new business as the locals are more than willing to spend a little coin. All this cafe has to do is keep it on the tracks and it would be a huge success but in both my visits all I saw was a train wreck in motion. If you have more staff “ working ” (term used rather loosely) than customers or occupied tables, it usually means: You aren’t out to maximise profits but would rather ensure hig

Went here for lunch as I had heard it was a small hip place. Loved the atmosphere and the staff were quite attentive for a cafe. I had the smashed avocado on toast with eggs it was great !!! Nice portion and super tasty. But the coffee was a HUGE letdown. Overall I liked it. But if the coffee was good I would be here all the time.
Rmiye1
Terrible coffee. Quite honestly the worst coffee I've ever tasted. Not sure what they do to the beans, but please save your $3.80 for a good cause.

Like great coffee??? Then you will HATE this place. Had a takeaway coffee from here 5/6 times...every single time the coffee was horrible...not just okay. like legitimately bad tasting coffee that does not taste like coffee at all!!!!!! I guess I went back because a part of me had hope that things would be different because this place gets so many great reviews, but I was just let down again and again. In contrast the shop a couple of doors down makes a cheap decent coffee and the girls who run it are so sweet!!!!! The food at Fergus looks good but dayum you couldn't pay me to drink that 'coffee'

Lovely waiters and lovely food. I eat at fergus on a regular basis. The food is consistently great, the waiters and always friendly and the vibe is lovely. Highly recommend. The coffee is super too.

Nice food but one rude waitress!. Sat patiently and waited 40+ minutes for food, fair enough for a Saturday morning. Finally received our meals and the waitress (girl with red bob hair and a neck tattoo) also served us a side of attitude and basically piffed the plates at us! Yes sure, you are busy but but there is no need to be rude. Another waitress saw the incident and came over to quietly apologise on her behalf, clearly the other waitress was used to seeing this type of behaviour from the waitress who spoiled our meal. Won't be going back there as this blatant unjustified rudeness is not an enjoyable way to kick off your weekend!

Great but!!. Had breakfast with friends a few Saturday mornings ago and it is lovely. Great choice of breakfast but!! when my husbands sliders arrived he felt that one of the fish sliders was a bit old by the smell. Now hubby is an ex chef so he said it wasn't off just a bit old. Advised the waitress who never came back with any follow up and no replacement slider. Would have thought you would get some response. Oh well obviously the young staff member didn't really care about our concern. Otherwise coffee and food choices are great. Would still recommend but maybe listen to your customers guys! Bet if Gary or Matt had brought this up it would have been dealt with better.

Surprised about the few negative reviews, this was not our experience at all. Staff friendly and attentive, good coffee, tasty breakfast. Get some of the chilli jam!

Egg white omelettes. If you see the egg white omelette on the menu - that should be your go to. Delicious.
The rest is lovely too!

Fred. Someone has tell them why was the " Z " team on at prime time Sunday brunch ,why and how can items be unavailable at 12.00pm they were in complete disarray we paid good money , but we got the " Z" treatment

Good food and atmosphere. Heading in for a Friday casual brunch, I found Fergus bustling and full with customers, a promising indicator of a good café. Immediately seated and offered water and drinks. Coffee was good, my 'Fergus bruschetta' (smoked salmon, poached eggs and bruschetta on multigrain) was absolutely delicious. My friend ordered scrambled eggs which were also one of the better ones I've tasted, although they were a bit lacking with respect to the side of bacon. Service was overall of a high standard, albeit slightly on the casual side, given the café's local setting.
I would be happy to return here, I had an enjoyable and delicious experience.
Thebonefactory
Always just grab a quick take away, would recommend their coffee black, not a fan of their bean with milk.
Amazon
Great cafe! Love the smashed avocado with the best chilli jam I've tasted, I even bought a jar to take home, YUM! Staff are friendly and were very attentive. I'll be back for sure!
Food Fiend
Such a cute little place. Amazing coffee and food! I'm here for the first time and absolutely in love with the place. I ordered the porridge (yum!), it was a very hard decision since everything on the menu sounded amazing. Definitely coming back to try the pulled pork. Thanks Fergus, see you again soon!

Weak coffee and poor service. no matter how delightful the food was, I will not be returning to fergus in the near future

Clean lines. Clean cutlery. Clean food.

Nice fitout. Good coffee, nice feel to the place, food just ok.
Dave
Fergus has a great fit out, attentive staff and they make a brilliant coffee from the Synesso that is as good as anywhere else. Nice menu that uses quality ingredients. I recently had the burger which was fresh, tasty and clearly all made on site with love. Great courtyard out the back, but the coffee is the highlight. Love visiting Fergus!

YUMO. Perfect, 5/5 food and service. tables are just a bit too close to each other....but its the close knit local so who cares if i hear your intimate conversation. thanks guys i'll be back
Tiggerz
Loved it - how could you not!! Great service, lovely wait staff looked after us + bub wonderfully. Great coffee. Had the Reuben sandwich + thrice cooked fries and yummy aioli. Fab... Cakes looked good. Thoroughly recommend
Tardar Sauce
Nice fit out and music. Coffee not great. Waiter stared a bit after I ordered my meal, bit of a space cadet. He had to come back and ask us to repeat our order. Meal was great but came out with no bacon. No biggie, just more attention needed - especially as cafe wasn't busy.

Normal prices for the area. Overall, I would return but get coffee elsewhere.

We get our takeaways here nearly every day, consistently good, and food is yummy too. Really friendly staff, very accommodating of bubs and little ones.
Miss HM
I always drive past and the place is packed so thought it was about time I stopped in. Amazing coffee & the Corn and Pea fritters with Beetroot relish are simply divine! Ill be back for sure!
Poppymckenna
Always a Very enjoyable every visit! Lovely presented food and surroundings. Delicious for the traditional brunch of eggs (however you like them). Delicious french toast anf perfectly executed soy latte! Last two visits have seen masterchef Gary Mehigan in for brunch with his family and popping in for a take away coffee. So if its his local too, it must be good!!! Heading back today.

Reliable as ever in Malvern. Coffee still superb. Beautiful space and atmosphere. Wait staff very tolerant of our lewd conversation. Sad that the pumpkin pancakes have been taken off the menu since I blogged them back when Fergus first opened, but the ricotta hotcakes with lemon mascarpone are outrageously good - if decadent at breakfast - and will serve as a worthy replacement.
David Horan
Love the breaky. Outstanding coffee.
Tried the new hollindase sauce on my eggs ..... Unbelievable I'm coming back
Sarah
Love the coffee here, and the friendly service makes it a favourite whenever I am in the area.

The daily muffins are delicious! Lovely and friendly staff!

Breakfast. I've had a number of soy chai lattes at many other cafes (some of them very reputable) and while they were fine, they weren't memorable. So when I tasted the soy chai latte here at Fergus, I was happily surprised and knew that I would not forget this place. Just the right amount of spice for my liking and, I have to admit, I'm very fussy when it comes to my chai (serve me the powdered stuff at your own peril!). Anyway, so after the outstanding chai, I had the Mediterranean baked eggs. While they weren't anything spectacular and seemed to be missing ricotta cheese, the sugo did pack a punch in the spice department. Overall, pretty happy with breakfast. Curious about the Pumpkin Pancakes, perhaps another time...
Bambi
Love this cafe!!. Have been to this cafe a number of times now since it opened. Unlike some of the other reviews, I haven't had one bad experience! The staff are always friendly and efficient. The coffee is fantastic!! Love the food, can't say no to the avocado salsa and chilli jam or that delicious quinoa salad. Will continue to come in whenever I can! Keep up the good work.
Allegra
Stopped in for a take away coffee. After hearing all about this place I stopped in today to grab a take away coffee. The girl who took my order was friendly enough BUT the guy who made my coffee left a lot to be desired.
When he finished making the coffee, he just shoved it on the counter and didn't say a word!! Is this mine? I asked. He grunted something which I took as a yes. Wow. Talk about rude. Would I drop in there again for a take away? No. Would I go in and try the breakfast? Probably not. One rude experience is enough for me. Will take my business elsewhere. Lots of friendlier cafes nearby where I know I will be greeted politely.
Craig Sanderson
Disappointing. Thought we would try a new cafe in our area. Great decor and vibe - coffee and hot chocolate good and service prompt. Ordered porridge which was luke warm and too much milk. Corn fritters were very bland. Order a side or gluten free toast - that cost $5 which was a complete rip off. I won't be going back. Too many good cafes around to give this one a second chance.
Bryan McNaughtan
Great looking place, coffees are tremendous! The staff need to be more friendly and remember to ask "is that all for today" before disappearing somewhere food is exceptional
Cath Lovelock
The cafe decor is great, but the staff need to be more friendly of they will lose their clientele.
JackStriker
Great place. Great new cafe in Malvern which opened late last year sometime. I frequent the place as I live up the road and I've never experienced "unfriendly" staff or cold food. the coffee is alway great and although the menu might need a bit of development, the current items on the menu look and taste great. Perhaps some visitors are just too difficult to satisfy. Overall, a friendly atmosphere with great coffee and food worth the visit.
Amelia
My new fave breakfast joint. I LOVE Fergus...it's my new local favorite place to go for breakfast :) the food always arrives perfectly, even when I make fussy modifications. I went there for lunch for the first time last weekend and had the quinoa salad which was DIVINE!! The coffee is amazing and the staff are all really lovely too. Will definitely be going back again (and again!)
Vic Cook
Just not good enough... Like the decor but the foods not up to scratch and the staff are not particularly friendly. So many more places to go.
Alice Simpson
No service. If we have not pleaded to be served I think we would have still been sitting there. The food was not worth the wait and cold. No, I will not be back.
The Cat
First time here, coffee is very good and cafe set up is cool. Very friendly staff.
Yet to try the food .

Atmosphere gr8 but service so incredibly slow n food sad .. Ordered the special which was sposed to be crisp pastry potato tomato asparagus n feta .. Luke warm n soggy .. Will be back!. Dropped in during the week and was greeted immediately by the friendly staff. The coffee came out only a few minutes later and tasted wonderful. I had the egg and bacon wrap and was delighted by the tangy avocado and crispy bacon. After reading the review last week I agree that it is a great new little cafe and well worth the visit. I will definitely be back.
Amy Knurek
Staff - not the sharpest. I asked for a juice 3 times still didn't get it, even though it was on the bill.
Coffee - decent, not amazing, but good
Food - potential but not there. I order the smash broad bean and feta. It was toast with a smear of broadbeans not a 'smash' as the menu suggested. My partner had the avocado salsa and poached eggs. This was NOT a salsa. It was a piece of toast with eggs. Nd a smashed pile of avocado. No herbs or tomato or anything to suggest a 'salsa' also not seasoned. Great decor though!
Elif Granot
Potential ... but not there yet. Not sure if Fergus is the new kid on the block. Coffee is a good standard. We asked for extra seat and were told there were none. A few minutes later we got one. Then we asked for another glass for water. We were told they had none. Then a few minutes later the dishes came out of the dishwasher and we got one! So overall, a 20 or so minute wait for avocado salsa breakfast, not bad. Its getting there. Room for improvement Fergus...
Mealbourne
We ordered the Corn Fritters with Sardines and Pumpkin Pancakes. After waiting a very long time, we were presented with portions that were too small. The pancakes were over glutinous - horrible texture.
SGDB
Rude staff, long wait for food, overpriced. Not a good first impression when you are ignored by 3 staff in a row when you are at the "wait here to be seated" sign. We were then told it would take over 20 minutes to cook the pumpkin pancakes. They finally arrived and were very small, nice tasting but not worth the wait or the money. We won't be returning. Very disappointed.
Nelly Samson
Nice cafe, not so nice coffee :(. I really wanted to like this place but the coffee was really bad = a 'no go' for me. Each sip I had the only word that came to mind was 'FAIL'. Four 'fails/sips' later I just gave up. So bitter and bland I had to stop drinking 1/3 of the way through....not worth the calories, would rather drink instant (and I hate instant coffee). Shame as the place is really nice and so are the staff. I tried!! But I didn't try the food so definitely go if you are not a coffee lover as its decked out so well.
Matildaw
Well worth the hype!! We had to drop in to Fergus today after a great write up in epicure as one of the best 10 new cafes in melbourne, and we will definately be back!! Word has obviously got around about this cheeky and cute new little place as it was buzzing when we arrived. Despite the busy tables of chatting ladies, children and businessmen we were met promptly with a smile as soon as we walked in. Starting with a signature cold drip coffee (perfect for this weather!) And a creamy soy latte we mulled over which dishes to choose from the creative breakkie and lunch menu and todays specials. My partner went with the sweet pumkin pancakes with bacon, and I had the caprese salad with poached chicken, petso and sundried tomatoes. We couldn't have loved it more! Both plates were licked clean! Staff were relaxed and fun, and we soon learnt the owner was behind the coffee machine lovingly working our caffeine hits. Can't wait to come back! Love your work guys!
Jane C
Small serving sizes. Just your run of the mill hipster cafe.....cool fitout, good coffee etc. there are some innovative items on the menu but really, $18 for 2 pancakes? c'monnnnn. I did enjoy them but I had to ask my partner to drive us home via Maccas as I was still starving.

We probably would not go out of our way to return here unless in the area.
HRW
My mum and I fought over who licked the plate. Corn fritters yum, cranberry & pistachio meringue yum, coffee blissful, well done guys!!
Rato
Tried here for the first time yesterday... Ordered the quinoa salad which promised me black beans but there were none to be found in my dish. Wasn't overly impressed with the dressing either however, had supreme order envy of the chicken roll & salami roll my family members had ordered. Coffee was good & service was very friendly. Want to try a few other items (namely the sweet pumpkin pancakes!) before I make my mind up about this place. I really want to like it cos it has great decor & the owner seems lovely. Give it another try before I pass judgement...

Excellent brekky at a great place. East Malvern/Glen Iris is looking up. Friendly staff, vibrant indoor area with relaxed rear courtyard (that is not some sad backyard) and street tables too. Fantastic coffee and a good innovative spin on some classic brekky dishes. I will definitely be going back to try them all!
Charliesouth
Great new spot. Had breakfast here on sunday and absolutely loved it! service was friendly and attentive and the food was simple yet delicious. I had the broad bean and meredith goats curd smash while my friend tried the sweet pumpkin pancakes, both plates were clean! coffee was great and we'll certainly be back soon. thanks guys!
Luca Ballatelli
Food, coffee, decor, service, Fergus is without doubt an elite cafe.
El.adams01
Thumbs up for this great new cafe! Service was great, we were greeted with a smile and seated promptly. Very happy with the coffee and delicious food (the sweet pumpkin pancakes are to die for!). Will definitely be returning soon!
Astrogirl
New favourite!. Went here last weekend for brunch with a couple of friends. The place was bustling but we were able to get a table without a wait. The food was delicious, the coffee very good (but not quite up to the standards of Seven Seeds, Dukes et al) and all at very reasonable prices. The three of us had breakfast and coffees for under $50. Very happy and will be back - a lot!
Momo
Thank you for opening a decent cafe around here! But the serving sizes are too small
Miam Miam
Best coffee around. I've bought take-away lattes in possibly every cafe in Malvern, and this is my new favourite. The coffee is smooth but the flavour rich. No bitter after taste. The service is also very quick and the wait staff very friendly. Took my daughter for brekkie and she had the smashed avo with boiled eggs on sour dough toast and chilli jam. To die for!! Will def be back for a meal with the girls.
Ashleigh
Lovely. It is really nice to find a place like this in Malvern. The decor is beautiful, the menu is innovative and the staff are attentive and friendly. I really enjoyed the pumpkin pancakes and my partner loved his cold drip coffee. All in all, our experience at Fergus was 10/10.
Sean Tuckett
I liked it, I had the sardine breakfast dish, my girlfriend had the avo dish (you will see it when you come here),
The coffee was great- and def go the avo dish
James Stafford
I'm a fan!. Been here three times now. The baked eggs were great but can't go past the Avocado salsa, poached eggs and chilli jam - sensational. Coffee is taken seriously and it shows. Do yourself a favour and try the cold drip over ice.
Benwithacapitalb
Awesome brekky. Loved it!
Adam
Quality coffee, eggs were on the smaller side of things
Overall not bad
Katie
Sweet little cafe, just what the area needed. Great coffee and delicious breakie, I couldn't go past the bacon and poached eggs but will be back soon to try the rest of the menu.....the whole menu looks yummy.
Portia
I have been to Fergus twice now already and was super impressed both times! The coffee is amazing, the food is delicious, dynamic and great prices. I love the yellow flower on every table! Apparently there is a court yard to come, so stay tuned!
Howstheham
Just what this area needs! Great coffee, superb decor, and a unique menu- love it!
Xanderb
Nom, nom, nom!!! Great coffee followed by a breaky baritto and the sardine dish. The wrap was good and a generous size but the sardines were sensational they were like fishy bacon but in the good way. If that makes sense. Anyway totally delicious and ill be returning with friends. Just awesome.

Breakfast at Fergus. Headed over in the morning nice and early; Fergus opens at 7:00AM :-)

Drinks:

2 x flat whites on the Maling Room's 'Symmetry' blend.

1 x double ristretto on the single origin; a Guatemalan (Finca Los Cab)

Food:

Corn and zucchini fritter with lightly smoked sardine, gazpacho, pickled cucumber, and sorrel (with an extra serve of sardine), plus two poached eggs.

Street salad of grilled mango and pineapple with herbs, in light honey citrus dressing and yoghurt

Okay, so first up; the double ristretto was a little tight (but I was in first thing at 7:00AM, and the coffee had only just been dialled in), so this is a minor quibble. It was excellent; bright and winey flavours.

The first of the flat whites was too weak (perhaps underextracted?); the milk dominated the coffee way too much, so I ordered a second one straight after to be sure. The second was spot on, and pretty much perfect.

The corn and zucchini dish was excellent; great complementary flavours between the fritter (not floury, crisp on the outside), the salty sardines, the sweet tang of the pickled cucumber and the gazpacho which was brilliant.

I think I've got a new favourite breakfast dish; honestly could have just had a bowl of the gazpacho by itself.

(Also, the poached eggs were prepared perfectly; not over or undercooked or reeking of vinegar which you sometimes get at places.)

The street salad was also fantastic with one quibble; too much herbs in the bowl. Seriously there was a LOT of green stuff; flavours of the grilled fruit were almost overwhelmed. This will be perfect if they back off a little on the amount of leaves. The combination of flavours definitely work well though; the excess herbs was the only issue.

Presentation was beautiful on both dishes, and the service was great; conscientious without being overbearing and very friendly.

Prices are excellent as well; the lunch menu in particular seems crazy cheap.

Heading back on Saturday for another round, but Southsiders should rejoice; this place is a winner :-)
Amanda Summons
Discovered a very awesome little café on Wattletree Rd in East Malvern called Fergus that served up delicious food, beautiful orange juice and good coffee (sadly not tasted by I, though). Went with a lovely friend, Laura, and Emma, the sister, and enjoyed a late breakfast/early lunch, which I suppose is technically a brunch! Enjoyed it throughly! Highly recommend : )

Items on the menu include the ‘Slow roasted chicken roll with cos, avocado and lime aioli ($10.00) and the ‘Fergus Reuben Sandwich on rye, toasted with pastrami, swiss cheese sauerkraut, pickles and mustard, served with side of thick cut chips and aioli’ ($15.00)

I order the sweet pumpkin pancakes on the basis that they are the chef's signature dish and that I have never seen them on a menu before. They take a little more time to arrive than I'd expected, but I'll wait for them again if I must: they are so soft they melt away in my mouth, the pepitas countering with their crunchy texture.
