I used to go there a lot when I worked in the area 7yrs ago.
It's been a few years since I've been back but tonight's dinner was just as good as I remember the food to be! And the owner and wait staff still remember me which was nice!
Seafood okonomiyaki was my fave dish back then and still is! Definitely a must try at Satsuki.
Clean fresh Sushi, good size portions and decent price. Small restaurant that adds to the experience. Would definitely recommend.
2 years ago we were here ordering the same food. We went overseas, yesterday we came back , we ordered this again. Never disappointed. Limited spaces therefore, have to be early or a little later at lunch time. Love the Japanese classic dishes as well as some different yet inspiring dishes.
Yum yum yum. Very small and cosy with delicious food.
Beautiful food, excellent service.
Would highly recommend
Always amazing food!! Would go more often if we lived closer!!
Amazing flavours, at this intimate restaurant, love it
Best Japanese food in the South East!! Agadashi Tofu to die for!
Tremendous local Japanese. Quick, well priced with very authentic flavours. Bento very generous and full of flavour. Book in advance as tiny and popular.
The best Japenese food . A very small restaurant, so make sure you book. Also the quality of the food is sensational.
You can also order a takeaway service. Everything is made fresh on the premises.
Now I’ve told everyone my secret.
Love this little place. Easy to get a seat for lunch mid week but nights are harder. They have a massive menu and can be confusing but order your usual favourites and it won't disappoint. Sashimi is generous and tasty. Byo wine. Best to order for takeaway of they are too busy
This place is amazing. Small if you want to eat in, however the food is delicious. This is now my new favourite Japanese food place. Ginger calamari salad , yakitori, nigiri, chicken teriyaki and they have a new wasabi dish which is Devine. Everything we had was fantastic.
After our first dining experience here, we’ve gone back religiously. The food is nothing short of amazing and the staff are the friendliest bunch. Please book ahead as this little gem of a place will be sure to be busy!
Very simplistic looking place. Nothing grand, or eye catching about it. Do not let that be the reason to you keep away. Staff are very friendly, and the food here is lovely. Great Japanese flavours. Everything is great, and I'm yet to pick a bad dish from here!
The negatives: it is a small establishment, with take away bento box as your plate and the price is leaning towards restaurant than Cafe... However,
It is yummy and unusual Japanese food varieties. We ordered the Spicy Pork Belly which similar to bimbimbap, spicy calamari (which is fried, Unfortunately), Yakiniku bento and spicy Salmon.
We made reservations as they've got an indoor seating capacity of only 14-15 pax. Service was friendly. Agedashi tofu was authentic (not many Jap eateries in Mel can do this dish properly). Takoyaki was good. The ebi Katsu don was a fav. The duck oyakodon was interesting & tasty but we think the duck was frozen meat, not fresh. It's quite difficult to find good bbq eel & their's is bloody good but it was served in a takeaway bento box (strange) & they had kimchi as sides (weird). Above average place.
Lovely family ran Japanese cafe, it is a small place but the serving size is huge. Although the dishes are not that delicate but it's definitely worth its value. I would recommend stir fry soba noodle, very unique taste, nice creation by the chef.
I love this place. Have eaten here many times and get take away regularly. It is reasonably priced for seriously delicious food- can't get any better in Japan! Make sure you check the specials boards. The eating-in area is tiny , seating maybe 20 max. You must book ahead if you want a seat. It is very casual. One of those venues where the food is far, far better than the venue it is served in. Very deceptive.
Small Japanese cafe owned by a Westerner chef but great variety of authentic Japanese dishes ! We had the potato croquette , okonomiyaki and yakisoba for lunch. All were delicious and we look forward to try their main dishes for dinner next time !
Having lived in Japan for over a year myself, I have usually found that Japanese restaurants in Australia are a little bit disappointing - sacrificing taste for the sake of saving money on ingredients where locals wouldn't normally notice. Satsuki was definitely an exception though - the sashimi platter was absolutely fantastic (with *real* wasabi!) and the okonomiyaki was the most authentic to Osaka's own that I have tasted in Melbourne by far! Booking by SMS was also very convenient, with a prompt reply. Cannot recommend this place enough!
Good choice of menu items, prompt service & decent portions. Great local joint all in all, would definitely eat here again. The only thing is - I wish they delivered via UberEATS as I don't live close enough to go often.
Been here first time today.
Ordered duck tataki, ebi don, and potato croquettes.
Duck tataki is very very nice. Very different from other Japanese restaurants. It's slightly on the more expensive range however the portion is very generous and enough for a whole table to try.
Definitely a menu to try on.
Ebi don, basically is fried tempura and egg on rice. It's not overly sweet.
I have to say it's potato croquette is just nice, standard, so so.
Service is excellent!!!
Will come back again.
I would say it s One of the best value for money Japanese cafe in Melbourne. I was surprised that the chef is a westerner who can do such good Japanese taste. The agedashi tofu is one of the best I have eaten in Melbourne. It's crispy and the sauce is just Japanese homey style. It will always be the Japanese eatery I will come whenever I am starving for a quick simple authentic Japanese meal.
Satsuki is a long-time favourite of mine, especially for their sushi handrolls and their gyoza's are a dream- I recently returned from Japan and Satsuki's gyoza's are still my favourite. Tiny restaurant with reasonably priced meals, nice place for a casual meal or just as good to take away and eat at home. Only issue really is parking as it's situated right on the corner of busy Waverley Road.
The staff are very nice and accommodating and the food is quite tasty. The rice in the sushi could do with some improvement as it was too hard and lacked the finer texture in my opinion, was a good lunch experience
Satsuki Cafe is located right on the corner of the Malvern/Waverley Road intersection. It doesn’t look like much from the road and is quite small inside.
They offer both dine-in and takeaway japanese dishes, although the service is quite slow, so allow for a bit of time.
There are less than ten small tables inside and only two outside. This makes it quite difficult to dine here in large groups. It’s recommended to make a booking, but you’ll have to do it by phone (or leave a message if they don’t pick up).
Check out the review of Satsuki Japanese Cafe in the blog post below.
The food was amazing. The staff are very attentive and nice. Some of the dishes here are unique and not what you would find in a typical Japanese restaurant which was refreshing. I highly recommend getting the Duck Tataki and Nabeyaki Udon they're both delicious. I would definitely be coming back.
Great little local place. Delicious, fresh, and authentic Japanese food. Great for takeaway too as the place itself is only tiny and nothing special in terms of decor or atmosphere. You only go there for the Japanese food and it's definitely worth it! My favourites are the Naso Dengaku (eggplant with amazing miso sauce) and the salmon teriyaki. Sushi and Japanese pancakes are great too. I used to live next door to this place and now still travel from Camberwell very regularly to get some for takeaway as haven't found any Japanese place this good closer to me so far!
One of the great local restaurants in Malvern East. Not the cheapest of eats, but the quality of the food makes it absolutely worth every cent
What a great little find ! Had dinner here last night and was not disappointed. The pork belly was melt in your mouth beautiful. The soft shell crab, another lovely dish! Friendly attentive service and a lovely atmosphere. Will definitely be back.
Been going to Satsuki for lunch over 5 years.
Food hits the spot, staff are friendly, Des and Chiemi make great food and dessert.
As a matter of fact, I think I will head over for a chirashi sushi lunch there tomorrow!!!
Perfection each time! Always delicious and fresh. We always know the food will be good when we order takeaway! Yum!!! Nanbatsuki seafood is always a winner
Best Japanese food I've had in Melbourne. Highly recommend the pan fried salmon and porterhouse steak. Absolutely amazing authentic food. Compliments to the chef!!
This is by far my favorite cheap eats place for japanese food. Everything is fresh including the sashimi. I ate two meals on the specials menu; spicy salmon (raw fish on sushi rice) and the soft shell crab bento box. Both tasted amazing. I have planned another outing here because I know everyone will enjoy the food. It is a tiny cafe so best to book if you have more than two people with you.
This is a fantastic local place, has fast become my wife and my place for Japanese. The service is excellent and food is on the spot. Probably one of the best sashimi I have eaten. But beware that it is a busy busy little place, speaks volumes about the place.
AMAZING!. This is an absolute GEM!!! Gotta have takeaway cause the restaurant is TINY... but the food is fantastic! I don't know how they do it in such a small kitchen!
Staff are super friendly...they knew my name after 2 visits (we always order the same thing) and remember us if we haven't been in for 6months!
We love to get the Bentos - kids love the Kids Bento, especially the potato cake, and we always have the Teryaki Salmon. Every time the sides are different, I love to see what we get each week. Really cheap to!!!!! Excellent value for money...where else could you feed the whole family a delicious meal for under $50!!!
Satsuki is by far one of the best Japanese cafes in Melbourne, I blogged about this cafe in Malvern East 3 years ago and I have been going there since it first opened over 7 years ago. It is run by husband and wife team who always greet me with a wave and smile as I enter and leave.
It is a tiny cafe and only seats 15 but that's what makes it so cosy. They have a standard menu and then specials on the chalkboard. I have my stock standard favourites and always order the same dishes whenever I come here as they are consistently so tasty and delicious.
I love bringing friends and family here as I always get the same response, all very impressed of the high quality of the food for such good value. On my recent outing, we shared the Prawn spring rolls, which were long and thin and unique as they had the a piece of nori seaweed within the roll enveloping the prawn. These were really tasty and we both enjoyed them.
The spicy tuna chirasi is very flavoursome. The kids bento is good value for money. The rice is a bit dry though :(
Weekly ritual. I and the rest of the family visit Satsuki every week for a quick bite. Very small place with 5 tables which are always fully booked. We tend to sit outside on the footpath where you don't need to book. This, of course, means that we are dependent on the weather. Food is fantastic, service quick, prices very reasonable. Prawn spring rolls are fantastic.
Absolutely loved this place. Amazing food and a very friendly staff. Soft shell crab is to die for.
Absolutely loved it!. Went for dinner today and they looked like they had a huge booking but the staff was lovely and managed to squeeze us in for a quick bite. The place is a little small and nothing fancy, but the food absolutely blew my mind. We had the chilli salmon parcel and the nasu dengaku for entree and for mains it was the duck sukiyaki and soft shell crab. It is delicious and it kept me wanting more. The food was full of flavor and just the perfect proportion. I will definitely be back again to try everything else.
Great Fresh Sushi. Best sushi hands down in Malvern. So fresh and quality ingredients. Get in there and enjoy it!!!
Little gem from the east... (ern suburbs). I've been here several times. The head chef isn't Japanese but something tells me he went to Japan and learned how to cook authentic Japanese cuisine. It is simply great. The menu is diverse and unique compared to other Japanese restaurants in Melbourne. I just hope they don't stray and start catering for westerners. I can see they have done this recently with their Tekka don, which I wasn't very pleased with. It used to be this unimpressive bowl of just vinegary rice and tuna marinated in a spicy dressing. It was simple and elegant. But they fancied it up with avocado and a few vegetables and put an extra $4 tag on it.
I love their duck tataki. It's just a pity that it doesn't fill you up because it tastes so good.
Not bad, quite authentic atmosphere. The crab salad is amazing but the gyuudon is futsuu (ordinary). Nice authentic Japanese feel.
Pork ribs are divine! Food portion is big and good to share. Prices are very reasonable. Love every single dish I have tried. Service is friendly and awesome too! What's not to like?
Not good food, it's great food! One of the best in Melbourne.. Wonderful food! I can't believe the chef is not Japanese. He could teach a lot of the second rate Japanese chefs how to cook Japanese properly.
However, it too hard too choose what to eat because everything is so great. I feel disappointed when I'm eating as I know I'm missing out on something else.
Its biggest problem is that its quite small, so please don't go. I don't want to miss out myself.
Good restaurant. I like Satsuki. The food is good and the service is ok.
Oh Wow!!. This is our local restaurant and what a find. Having walked and driven past this tiny establishment many times we finally dined there tonight. i couldn't wait to write this review. The chef is not Japanese and we found this astounding as the food is so authentic you would think that you were in Japan.
Great value, great service but more importantly great food.I'm not quite sure why i'm sharing this review as it's such a gem.
Nice!!. What a suprise! This place is operated by non-Japanese but they do really good job. Looks dodgy from outside but forget about the exterior and interior, the food is reasonable and good.
Cute Japanese cafe with fast and fresh sushi. Just don't order the eggplant, was very tough to eat, the taste was just wrong and bland if anything. The pork belly was decent, tender, if not a tad too salty. I'll come again, service was ok, nothing special
Sensational Satsuki!. Ordering here was hard - there is A LOT to choose from and so much of it sounds good! in the end my partner and i shared 3 entrees....the spicy duck parcels, potato croquettes and the calamari salad. all were really great. my favourite would have been the calamari which was all cooked well except for one super tough ring.
we shared a main - triple cooked pork belly. this was very tender and it did just melt in your mouth.
we byo'ed a bottle of wine....total price = $50.
the take away counter was non stop. the locals are onto this place and rightly so.
So glad I was introduced to this gem. Extensive lunch bento menu and varied special treats on their regular menu, like crispy spicy salmon gyoza. Get the braised duck bento - oh man that rich soupy duck leg just rolled off the bone. Melts in the mouth with a wee scoop of rice - YUM.
Absolutely amazing, so fresh, highly recommend the triple cooked pork belly or the slightly seared tuna & salmon salad. Service is always friendly and food comes out in great timing!
Try the pork belly bento its amazing
A Gift with Food. In one word; amazing. Truly great Japanese food and a pleasant dining environment. Word of warning though; it is very small and only seats around 16 people, so make bookings if you want a spot for dinner.
Soft shell crab salad was amazing! So many crabs, beautiful sauce and the spring onion pancake was delicious.
Gem of a place. Food was great and price was cheap

Have to be honest. I have to give my honest opionion.
I like this resto because of:
Price = quality + quantity
For me it will more appropriate if we call it Chinese - Japanese resto.
Cause it has quite strong Chinese influence.
This is a fabulous restaurant! The agedashi tofu and salmon teriyaki was unspeakably good. Highly recommended
Re-invented Japanese, a must for foodies.. Very inventive japanese food.
Tiny restaurant, so its hard to eat in... but if you can its very good!
Duck salad with green tea noodles is especially yummy... in fact you cant really go wrong here.
Chef is somewhat of a genius,
Japanese-y goodness. Best soft shell crab ! However gets very crowded
Fantastic. Some of the best Japanese food in Melbourne ! Made in a shoebox sized kitchen but absolutely delectable. Having spent lots of time in Japan I really value great food like this. Make sure you have their salmon and also their bento boxes. Sublime !
Nice change to the usual Japanese options. Book ahead if you want a seat. Worth visiting.
Pricey but plentyful. When my family and i went to this shop they didn't enjoy it much, i on the other hand loved it =D
I had the Sweet Potato Noodles, which were amazing and there was alot of them to be had.
Tasty cheap Japanese fare. .
Pros:
- Nice variety on menu, not your standard Japanese offering
- Variety in dish selections, ie: multiple types of Bento, multiple types of hand rolls, multiple types of Okonomiyaki
- Cheap as chips
Cons:
- Only a few tables to eat at, so takeaway is your only lunchtime option if you get there after 12.10pm
- Gets crowded with people waiting for their takeaway orders, but you can ring ahead and order
I like it good food a bit pricy but good food prepared fresh I recomend to go
