Review Harmony Bbq & Seafood - Malvern

A very good Chinese Restaurant, with a higher standard of cuisine and pleasant eating experience at a reasonable price.

Very poor but very expensive food for takeaway Ordered beef with cashew nuts but given a container with at least 90% vegetables cut into large pieces. Cashews were few and far between and the sauce was not black bean as requested but a runny gravy. Cost over $48 for this and fried rice. Will never return. Restaurant was also empty. A few years ago this was a busy and bustling restaurant but now no customers and very poor food.

First time tried the roast duck but the dish is such a surprise for me as an authentic Chinese . Sooo authentic, delicious and juicy. I ordered the soup noodles with roast duck that's not in the dinner menu but the owner still made it. Will definitely go next time!

Love the BBQ and the fish. It is a classic Cantonese restaurant in the suburbs. Not the best one you will go to but they do the standard fare “ping pun” roast meats and the steamed fish. The choi and the sweet and sour pork are also solid dishes. All in all good value but there are better Cantonese restaurants out there. BYO as well!

$48 for the banquet. Entree: 1 small spring roll and 1 prawn toast. Mains: 1 prawn, 1 scallop, 1 piece of squid smaller than my little finger and a couple of vegies, then two slices of extremely thin beef with fried rice. Then 1 fried banana w icecream. Ridiculously ripped off and not even a smile.

Went here for lunch the first time, the food were horrible. We had a few yum cha dishes and the lunch special. Food tasted bland and one of the dish seems to be out of a can. Not worth the price of $65, never again

This restaurant on the Glenferrie road shopping strip in Malvern serves efficient, reliable Chinese food. The live fish and free range chicken are particularly good. The decor is nice with a relaxed ambience.

It's great place for Chinese food especially best pecking duck dish. Strongly recommend the restaurant to local friends if you like harmony environment, friendly staff and yummy food, you could enjoy more here. Would love coming back, this is my favourite Chinese restaurant now. :-)

I ordered the Soya Sauce Noodles today via UberEats for $15 ($14.8 actually). To my total surprise, it came with only stir fried noodles with some onions and bean sprouts.

I called the restaurant and confirmed that it was not a mistake, which was even more shocking.

This item came with a high enough price tag so people got an impression that it should have come with other more meaningful ingredients in the meal (similar to Singapore Noodles for example). However the name "Soya Sauce Noodles", which does truly mention only noodles, and technically correct, at the same time doesn't give any room for complaints .

Because of that I felt being cheated and angry.

The lady on the phone advised me: perhaps next time order the "Wonton Noodles" and I would get some wontons. Thank you for your great kindness. What about spending some more time labeling the item correctly, such as "Soya Sauce Noodles (noodles only)", so that no more people are cheated?

This is my first time ordering from this restaurant, and I will never come back. In addition, I'll be sure to spread my words too.

Went with family for lunch and chose this place because it was central to every one. Glad we did. Delicious food, attentive staff and pleasant ambience. Will definitely go back.

Great food, great service.
The meal we ordered were pretty standard for chinese restaurant, beef cashew, honey chicken, and mixed veggies, roast pork and bbq pork combination And I can't resist my self from their chicken feet. They were all delicious.
Will definitely be back again.

Mum and I were in Malvern during Friday lunch time and walked past this yum cha place so decided to go it a go. The restaurant was almost full and our table was the only Asian table at that time. We didn’t like the food unfortunately. The skin of Xiao Long Bao was so thick. Ginger prawn skin was mushy. Vegetarian dumpling was bland. Sticky rice was dry and tasteless. It seems like a restaurant targeted non Asians hence if you are after a real yum cha experience, probably find somewhere else.

A bit expensive especially the mixed roast. But really good quality and fresh. The vegetables - KaiLan is nicely fried. The king prawns were massive. Very good customer service.
I was in the area after a drunken night and wanted some yumcha so I did what everyone would and googled chinese restaurants in Malvern. I stumbled upon this and sussed out the reviews and the menu. In the end, I chose this place because it was the closest restaurant to where I was and I only had to walk 10 mins.

Funnily enough, it was probably the best decision I made within the past 8 hours as the food was surprisingly good. I had the usual steamed dim sum and deep fried snacks. Everything was really really good and I could not fault the place. The service was really good for a busy Sunday and the staff were very kind and helpful.

Overall, it was an unexpected delight and I definitely think this restaurant deserves more credit than it already does. It is definitely above average and I reckon it definitely has potential to be one of the best in Melbourne but definitely would not happen over night. Regardless, you have one happy and satisfied customer here and hope many will follow to. Recommended to all.

P.S they have a shared parking area behind the restaurant in case you can't find street parking

Came here for dinner. Food was amazing and filling especially the peking duck. The service was astounding and felt more like a premium, fine dining restaurant yet I didn't have to spend as much. Definitely more worthwhile.

Great local chinese restaurant and will be back soon :) thank you!

Was in the area on the weekend and was thinking of where to go. Heaps of restaurants on Glenferrie road but the missus wanted yum cha and so we looked in the restaurant and found it quite busy so thought we should try it. Service was amazing, as this was our first time to go yum cha without our Chinese friends we did not know what to order, but the staff were very friendly and introduced each dish for us. A lot of them were familiar so we obviously ate those ones like the prawn dumpling and siu mai. They were also serving roast pork and crackling and it was so juicy and crunchy. We also tried this soya sauce and rice noodle thing with bbq pork and it was one of the best dishes of the day. Everything was so tasty and fresh, it made me happy but made my missus even happier as it fulfilled her craving. So glad we came here for lunch as staff were super friendly and helpful and the food was superb. Will be back for more of that bbq pork and roast pork.

I was hesitant to come here due to the reviews but they were all at least 2 months ago. I am unsure what happened but within the last couple of months the restaurant has changed so much and it has definitely 100% improved.

I came here with a table for 10 on a Sunday for Yumcha. I was welcomed by happy and smiley waiters who took me to my table and offered me drinks to start off. Within several minutes, I was offered dim sum and food by the friendly staff. The food was hot and steamy and it all looked yummy. I could not fault any of the food as they were made with perfection and tasted delicious. Prawn dumplings, pork dumplings and all the different assorted dumplings were to die for. I would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone as the staff were friendly and provided exceptional service and the food was amazing. I mean what else can you ask for?

The restaurant is licensed and serve alcohol so I will definitely be back for dinner. Regardless, I will definitely be back again for yumcha as I would definitely say one of the best Chinese restaurants in Melbourne. The restaurant atmosphere and ambience was great with tables of families to couples to kids. Definitely an all rounded restaurant with delicious food, friendly staff and guaranteed great time with your guests.

Highly recommended, 10/10.

Great food, dont know why they get negative reviews, have been here several times and always consistent, very generous portions and friendly service.

Went here for a Sunday yum cha, so expectations were set for the standard offering of dumplings and a few other options.

Food was cold, the curry puffs were burnt underneath, the other items we ordered off the menu were very slow to come out and the rice arrived just as the other dishes were finished (despite asking three times). Food was awful and well below minimum standard.

Very disappointed and will definitely not return. Poor show!!
Rob
Best Chinese in the area. Been coming for 10 years and never been disappointed. My favorite dish is the half duck and plum sauce. Try, it's mind blowing.

Have enjoyed many meals at Ripples and more recently Harmony. This evening, went with a group of 8 to celebrate Mothers’s Day. A disappointing experience. Food was delicious but serves varied from small to medium. Service was very slow. Even after requesting soups to be served with entrees’ there was a 20-30 minute wait until quail was served. Then dumplings, another 20-30minute wait. Roast duck, then 20 minutes before the rest of the mains were served. Ran out of mango pudding and also did not have one of the sweets on the menu. The complimentary fruit and jellies never arrived. Don’t think we will bother going back.

I got a Groupon voucher and had a dinner there. The service was average, the food were not bad especially considering as a discounted price. Will recommend this restaurant.

Great service and tasty food. Waiter staff always assisted and offered explanations when asked.
Nice to be offered crackers at start and fruit at the end.
Sadly my ibs didn’t agree with the food later at night

Cheap banquet but nothing special and left a fair bit to be desired. Was a reasonable deal but wouldn't choose the banquet menu option again.

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. The space was nice and modern (if a little tacky) and the staff were quite attentive and friendly (which is a departure from what I've typically experienced at Chinese restaurants).

I came here in a big group for dinner and ended up having the banquet as there were too many options to choose from on the menu. The banquet included so many dishes that we weren't able to finish all the food. The food was also quite nice in general with the ingredients being fresh and the elements well executed. The standouts were the steamed abalone, roast chicken, satay beef, steamed fish and fried salt and spice pork ribs.

I was a little disappointed by their sweet and sour fried pork ribs as they tasted the same as any take away joint. The worst dish by far however, was their platter of roast pork belly and roast duck. The crackling on the pork belly was soggy, the meats were cold, the duck was dry and tough. Both meats had this strange unpleasant taste that was made worse by the dipping sauce the platter came with.

I was also disappointed by the way the banquet was served. All the dishes in the banquet came out in quick succession and we weren't able to fit all the dishes on the table. We ended up having to plate some dishes together to make things fit. It would have been nice to have been asked how we would have liked to dishes to come out or if they thought ahead a little.

Overall, it was decent experience and the banquet offered good value considering all the food we received. I'm definitely open to the possibility of returning.

I went here last night and have a wonderful time. Great food and amazing service. Will definitely be back here to try other items on the menu.

So surprised at the quality of the food here. Only visited as my mom had a Groupon voucher but honestly I have nothing to complain about? Everything tastes well made.
Peking duck, lemon chicken, seafood vege combo, beef and cashew nuts - service was great, food tastes yum. Each dish basically had a good serving of vegetables in it so there is always a variety in flavour. The duck was well cooked and I wasn't chewing my tongue off throughout. I'd probably return if we didn't live about 30 mins away!

The food and all were all quite tasty. Even though the layout and the service weren’t that great, but they sure got some things to improve on

Lovely, friendly staff. Came for some Yum Cha with friends, and was very happy with the fresh produce, and variety of tasty dishes.
I'll be coming back for sure!

A few of us just came here for Sunday Yum cha. It was such amazing food with great variety and great service. Will definitely be back again.

Good yum Cha. Would recommend. But quite busy on Sundays so make sure you ask for things you really want. Eggplant and egg tart are always good.

Disappointing. Would love to know how this received anything higher than a 2.5. “Food” is one of three things: salty, mushy or bland. One thing in common however: overpriced. Almost insulted to be allow this to be considered Chinese food. It’s also unbelievably rude to be charged $2 per person for tea. Westernised to the point of tasteless, I mean it in every sense of the word.

The current 3.1 reflects the restaurant’s food pretty well. The 2 pieces of Peking deck($10.8) were clearly microwaved as even the cucumber inside was steamy hot... I don’t know what I was paying for to be honest.

In terms of service, the staff are very nice and welcoming. However, I was quietly nervous as one of the waiter was coughing around me repeatedly.

I really enjoyed the food here, reasonably priced, clean food. The beef was tender and the many appetisers we had to start were super tasty. I wouldn't hesitate going back soon and trying some more of the menu 👍🏽

We had dinner here during the week using a Groupon voucher and it was a nice 3 course meal, which was worth the discount given. The lemon chicken was really nice. It wasn't crowded and the food came out pretty quickly. If your looking for something quick and easy then not a bad place to go to.

Food tastes and looks good with genuine Cantonese style and clean,
fairly good environment, deserve a try.
Reasonably priced and service alright.

My partner's family and I had takeaway from this Chinese restaurant for dinner today. We ordered eight pieces of wrapped duck, fried Bok Choi, large fried rice and honey chicken. To my surprise, the sauce served with fried chicken was pure honey with sesame seeds, which was a bit too sweet. I'm not a fan of rice to start with so I won't comment on the fried rice. However, my boyfriend seemed to enjoy it a lot. The Bok Choi were standard. I quite like the wrapped duck, they were nicely flavored. They also gave us a bag of prawn crackers for free, which taste not bad.

Hidden gem. Best Chinese ever. Great Peking duck and fantastic roast pork. One of the best meals. Friendly service. Will definetly be back for more!

Harmony Seafood Chinese Restaurant - Glenferrie Road Malvern - 9 friends ate at this restaurant on New Years Eve. Our joint ranking of the food and service was exceptionally poor and below standard. Our group took the $69.00 ($80.00 per person finally) Banquet and it certainly did not meet up to our reasonable expectations. The dishes were particularly greasy, and lacked taste. Only one dish was seafood related in a lettuce leaf. The crumbed pork was something that should have remained in the kitchen. The service was relatively inadequate, and gave the impression that most staff did not wish to be there. Where was the fresh seafood? The decore and refurbishment of the restaurant was acceptable but the meal certainly did not measure up to the restaurant ambience. Our group goes out to dinner ever Saturday evening. We would not recommend the Harmony Seafood Chinese Restaurant and will not return. Summary of our views - review the quality and standard of your food and value for service. Review the quality and commitment of the staff. The potential of this restaurant is waiting in the wings to see notable and major improvements. We would not recommend this restaurant.

Popped in for a late night bite, very glad they were still open. Fantastic service, fresh food and very tasty. Will be coming back for sure.

We were really glad when this place replaced Ripples. It's so much better and we eat here very regularly now. The Yum Cha is also a welcome addition to the area. The service is friendly and the food is definitely the best Chinese in this area.

Absolutely delicious and generous helpings for the price - outstanding fresh prawns, fried flounder, fried green beans, ma po tofu .... standout eggplant hot pot. Really good Cantonese cooking, not greasy or salty, not that easy to find these days......

amending above review from 2016 . Tonight’s meal (flounder especially) was far too salty. Duck still very good, not stringy or fatty but glass noodle and veg hot pot was heavy on the noodles and light on the veg. Not as carefully cooked as before ....

Yum Cha always makes me happy, makes my day, calls me wherever it is. Come to meeee! I had to respond to the call when I passed by this restaurant while doing some errands in the area.

Harmony BBQ has traditional Yum Cha with trolleys passing moving around the room. That is my favourite sort of Yum Cha. They have the usual culprits, steamed buns, dumplings, traditional Chinese favourites (paws, tripe, etc.) , fried food, plus a few desserts. The items I chose were very fresh, very tasty, with bulky filling, and still warm or hot (something that not always happens in other Yum Cha places). The ginger prawn dumplings and the postickers were great! They didn't have the big hollow sesame balls I love, so I tried the traditional small sesame balls filled with red been paste. They were yummy, warm, fresh, and not oily at all. Perhaps I expected a bit of more variety of dishes but I arrived when the Yum Cha session was already under way, so I might have missed some others.

Most of the staff were lovely, especially the ladies and the young guy at the cashier. They clear tables and reset them in little time.

The place if very clean and decorated in a modern Chinese style.

The only issue is that the size of the two people tables are too big in the area beside the communal tables, so the trolleys can't go in well if the communal table is busy, and customers in the double table have to get up to check the trolley.

Friendly services, taste delicious food and comfort environment.
Our favourite dishes are Peking Duck and steak fillet, love to try more others on the menu.
Surely will be back for the delicious cuisine and hope can have a drink soon !

I previously ate here when it was ripples and was not impressed, so when new owners came along and improved the decor i decided to check it out.
The entrée of mixed meats was tasty (pork and chicken) but the three mains we ordered were below average. The lemon chicken was bland, the Singapore prawns was covered in egg and some horrible batter and the mongolian beef had no taste.
The Chinese tea was nice.
The service was friendly.
Won't be returning.

Went there predominately for the mud crabs. Amazing!! Except for the prices, we were highly impressed with the quality of food and service. We ordered the chilli crabs- being Singaporean I have high expectations. I was very satisfied. Will be back!

Excellent Chinese food. Ordered take away that included many staples: prawn toast, lemon chicken, duck with plum sauce, special fried rice and chinese sausage. Everything was really good. The price is a little higher than other Chinese take-away, but I thought it was worth it.

Recommended and looks like a great place to eat in as well.
