Review Where Is Henry - Malvern

Debbie Nik
Where is Henry is a cozy cafe, with a great selection of breakfast and brunch treats, such as smashed avo and omelettes, with daily specials written on the board. Coffee was on point, they a speciality blend that had a bitter and sweet taste. Staff were friendly and not over bearing, enjoyed the atmosphere and music. Street parking is available at front and in surrounding streets.

Excellent Korean burger and fries full of flavor service was great staff very friendly set on the original site of Henry's Cafe. I have traveled the world and I put the coffee I have just had here in the top 5.

Nice breakfast and coffee. Staff are very good as well Great chilli eggs and corn fritters

Awesome place, really comfy and nice staff. The food is totally awesome, and at a good price.

An all-round great find! Friendly, efficient service in a lovely space (check out the little back courtyard on sunny days). Good coffee, delicious food and a range of enticing specials for once you get through their regular menu. Downside might be having to pick what to eat as it all sounds good! The wild mushrooms with “gnocchi”, for the record, is delicious. We’ll be back!

I can highly recommend this brilliant cafe. The service is prompt, cheerful and extremely helpful. The decor and the food and drink choices are exquisite. It's quite clear that the owners and staff have taken great care to ensure that this cafe is a warm and inviting place. It is rare to find a cafe of this standard. I would have no hesitation in recommending Where is Henry? to anyone.

Great food combined with an excellent cafe vibe. The winner in their menu is definitely the Ploughman, absolute stunner of a meat platter. I was the first female to finish a Ploughman, apparently most women find the quantity a bit too much. We regularly go to this place for lunches and never have we been disappointed. Worth every penny.
Simon
The menu look simple, but quality of food is out of expectations ! I love the wild mushroom , is a simple dish, however they put great effort to cook and present ! Also their price is slightly lower than other cafe. However coffee bean taste is too light, not strong enough.

Happened to pass by and stopped to go in for a coffee. It’s a wonderful cafe in the east, serving absolute great coffees. Staffs were friendly and nice.

COFFEE/ Hot Choc REVIEW!

Location- easy to access. Enough street parking around. Located on a pretty busy street.

Service- the staff are very lovely. So patient and so quick.

Drinks- got an iced latte and a hot chocolate. hot Chocolate was GREAT! Really chocolatey and nice. A bit pricey for the serve though.

The iced latte was nice too. A good drink on a warm day!
Jamie
Good service, always friendly. Food consistent and haven't been disappointed yet. Definitely worth a visit! Have tried most of the menu over the last couple of years and haven't had any issue, can recommend Bircher
@twogoodtoresist
Super average cafe with a very limited menu and not great service. Avoid the bircher muesli at all costs- it’s horrible! The coffee is decent but if you’re looking to eat we don’t recommend it

A home-style cafe with comfortable environment. Friendly staff. I just tried a $14 egg Ben which is a masterpiece. Amazingly great taste in such reasonable price.

I note the other positive comments but on two visits we made it should have been better. I am writing this review because with someone paying more attention to detail, the issues can be easily fixed.

Firstly the overall ambience, it is a bit stark and could do with some themed artwork to brighten / funk up the physical environment. Then they need to pay attention to their music. On Sat afternoon the music was inaudible. On Sunday morning for breakfast it was loud rap music although the song volumes were all over the place, only turned down when the ridiculously loud phone was aloud to ring for around 40 seconds.

Also on the Sunday, it was 11º outside and the door was open and inside was cold, so it wasnt very welcoming. This was reinforced by it being empty when Mr Foxx and St Jamies up the road were doing good business.

On the counter, there was a small empty bay marie and the small selection of cakes were uncovered on the counter. This gives the impression of a failing cafe worried about their overheads. Even if this is true, you don't want to convey this impression.

That said, the coffee was pretty good and the food and service ok, but the food could possibly be a little more tasty.

My wife has said she wont go back. In my case, i would love to see this cafe lift its game; sweat the "small stuff", and make it the most popular cafe on the strip

I'm unsure why this place is not rated better. I had the French Toast (I added bacon as well) and my partner had the ploughmans breakfast. Both were fantastic. The coffee was not AMAZING but fine. Give this place a go. :)
Where You Been
Went there on Sunday for breakfast, was absoulety beautiful! I had the "smashed avo" it definitely hit the spot! I will definitely will be going again

Weekend brunch with the family. Attentive and friendly service, we were welcomed and seated promptly with a smile. We ordered coffees, a plough man's platter, poached eggs on toast and chicken tenders and chips for my little one. The coffee was very nice, the food took awhile to come out but worth the wait. The plough man's platter was delicious and huge (2 pple can share this meal), it was a glorious pork feast consisting of chorizo, pork sausage, pulled pork, generous serving of bacon, eggs, toast and condiments. The other two meals were very tasty as well. Definately will become a regular spot being so delicious and close to home.

Best cappuccino in Melbourne. Hands down. Don't know how they make it so good, but it is. Food is good too, gotta get a ploughman.

The service is always friendly and welcoming

Have always enjoyed going to this cafe but certainly won't be back again. As a local to the area we have lots of choice for cafes and the food here is usually good and the service used to be amazing and the staff always super helpful. Sadly we chose to have a family farewell coffee at 3 as I was unaware that 3.30 was closing time (we usually do brunch or weekend coffee) Just after 3.30 we were told they were closing and basically - leave. We used to go to Thread just up the road but they close earlier I thought - well Thread does close at 3.30 but close to 4 they were still open - surprise they had customers still drinking coffees. Thread's staff obviously care about their customers more. Guess where we will be doing brunch in the future?
Shame - we did like Where is Henry? But in a strip where there is a choice of great Cafes poor customer service can be a deciding factor. Perhaps there has been a change of management - who knows?

A good breakfast, probably the best place amongst the other cafes in the area
Big portions, good service. Great coffee. Staff friendly
A good local and a good last minute decision to go

Nice to hangout ..... as there are plenty of other cafes along this strip.

Base on their Coffee and Muffin, this place has merit.

Pleasant staff and I'm sure we can explore more in time.

Just had a really tasty tender calamari salad and an excellent flat white coffee out in the courtyard. Very pleasant and relaxing. Will be back.
Sandy Pok
Ordered:
- calamari salad (16.90),
- Henry's brekkie ($18.50),
- on special: pulled chicken salad with roasted pumpkin, zucchini, eggplant and lime yogurt dressing ($18.50),
- on special: trio pork belly sliders with coleslaw, chipotle peppers and Russian Mayo ($18.50)

Calamari was cooked nicely with a light coating of batter plus the salad served with it was a nice accompaniment.

The chicken salad was also pretty good, dressing taste like it might have honey in it but it went quite well with the entire dish.

Pork belly was crispy and the coleslaw that went with the sliders was nice and refreshing.

Henry's brekkie was a standard big breakfast fare so I can't really comment much on that.

Overall quick service, food portioning was decent, coffee was good.

Staff: The staff were so lovely! Although I arrived 5 minutes before the kitchen closed (around 2:30PM), they were more than happy to give my friends and I a table and some time to order our food, and delay their closing procedures. They were very attentive and ensured that we all had our food and drinks promptly. The staff are immensely friendly are genuinely interested in talking and getting to know all of their patrons.

Restaurant: Praise the lord, there is ample space for prams for all the foodie mums out there! There is no stumbling over each other or strangers to manoeuvre around tables to get to the bathroom. There is also ample space on the dining table so you can eat freely without bumping into your mate's arm with every bite. It is very well decorated with a very relaxed atmosphere.

Food: On this occasion, I had 'The Little Ploughboy' and my god, it is a colossal dish! There are four different types of pork on your plate (bacon, sausage, chorizo, pulled pork), plus poached eggs on toast and gherkins.

Although the poached eggs could have been cooked better, the only real downfall of this dish was that I could not finish it! There is just so much food on the plate.

As per usual, I also ordered a long back. The long black was incredibly smooth and so aromatic that it did not require sugar at all!

Price: For the amount of food you are getting, this place is a steal! I was surprised at how inexpensive the check was. For three meals and three drinks, it totalled to $60.90!

Overall: This place is a must try if you're ever in the area. Their menu has a huge variety of food that caters to different dietary requirements, so there should be no complaints.

What a gem. Great ambience. Lovely, helpful staff, generous servings. The shakshuka baked eggs was delicious! Will definitely come here again.

A pretty decent suburban cafe with great smashed avo. I've been here 3-4 times now and that's the dish that I come for! A generous serve size with a great hit of chilli and mint - add a couple of poached eggs and you'll be feeling full by the end. Coffee is an 8/10, service is hit and miss - most recent visit was this past weekend and although the place wasn't busy (maybe 50% full) it took a good 5-10 mins for us to be approached by wait staff. And then they forgot my coffee! But the smashed avo is well above the average Melbourne cafe menu offering so I will continue to return for it. This place has the potential to be excellent - it just needs some slightly more attentive service and a little more menu creativity.
Skye
Great coffee, friendly staff, yummy menu with generous serves (love the chili veg scramble!) and excellent kids menu - eggs with soldiers or tiger toast. My favorite in this strip :)

What happened??? New owners???

The WORST coffee, totally undrinkable. Come back original team!!!

Plough on in. The Little Ploughman is Melbourne's best value breakfast. It is bloody delicious too. I would know - I eat the house down

RUDEST STAFF EVER! Weak coffee and food a rip off for takeaway and it took the staff nearly 10 min to bother saying hello or serving me despite me standing right infront of them! Too busy talking to each other! Too many nice place to spend $20 on a coffee and some eggs take away....

So happy with the breakfast here at Where is Henry. Had the baked eggs and really enjoyed them. Packed with flavour and very filling. Had a nice relaxing vibe in there, and the service was prompt and friendly. Will definitely be coming back.

Great coffee, great food. ...and very friendly staff ! been there many times for breakfast and it was always good experience.
one of my favorite places in Melbourne. the only thing i wish is if they have traditional Italian coffee, as I'm not fan of fruit acidity in the coffee, but both barista's at this place are excellent and coffee is constantly great !
Nighters
Didn't even get served. We stood at the door like idiots waiting to be seated as staff walked past clearly ignoring us. We finally got a table after approaching and asking the barista. We then proceeded to wait and wait and wait to be served, watching other patrons also getting as frustrated as they also waited. The staff seemed to be dazed and confused, washing cutlery and stacking glasses rather than attending to their customers. They had an amazing ability not to make eye contact making it impossible to flag one of them down. Really bizarre. Left without even having water brought to the table or being asked if we wanted a coffee. Such a shame as the place wasn't that busy and the food looked good! Disappointing.

Where is Henry Today is 4.... Today is 40degrees in Melbourne and Where is Henry has air-con which was vey much appreciated! I've been here a few times and the food is always spot on but the service lacking a little. Staff need to pay attention to new customers walking in to welcome & seat - don't leave us guessing as it instantly sets the experience off to an awkward start. Coffee great as always, brekkie was good, scrambled eggs were a little too creamy for my taste but they got my order right so thumbs up on that one. Overall good experience and we will return here.

Not the best in the area... Really didn't rate the coffee..

Everything you need. I work in hospitality myself and when it comes to a dining experience I can be... Fussy. I have been here at least a dozen times over the past 3 months and every time Where is Henry has ticked every box. The staff attend to new customers promptly and ensure that you feel comfortable and looked after. An order is taken for a coffee right away. The coffee is brilliant. The baristas charismatic. Food orders are never pressured but always welcome. The water on my table never runs dry. The ambience is excellent. The all day breakfasts here are all bang on what I want. The Brioche French Toast is perfect for a sweet tooth and the Baked Eggs with Chorizo is one of the best breakfast dishes I've ever been served. Not to be walked past if you're a local and worth a drive if you're not.

Don't buy take away coffee. 15 minute wait for two take-away coffees that we're made in mugs then poured into take-away cups when they realised their mistake. Won't be back.
San
Welcoming and yummy. Greeted with a smile, muffins were excellent, we will be back

The food is off the chain! Upon arriving we we're meet warmly at the door and given seats road runner style (legit so quick). The outdoor toilet vibe adds to the digestive experience and makes you feel like you're in Europe (did someone say alfresco!?). The coffee has delicious notes of expertise and tastes like passion. Would recommend Where is Henry, I just hope that one day we all find him!

I keep coming back. As a regular at Where is Henry? I find myself coming back mainly because of the wonderful staff. The food is quite good (watch out if they are busy though!) and the coffee has always been to my liking or tweaked for free if I had any concerns.
What saddens me though, is the high turnover rate with wait staff, including one of my favourites who from what I can tell doesn't work there anymore. Its a shame someone I saw working so hard and being so consistently welcoming and interesting no longer brightens my day by reciting my name, order and what we last chatted about almost as soon as I walk in the door.

I hope your boss reads this Sarah, because you should know what an amazing bonus you were, and how much your customers value someone who actually cares about them. Thank you.

I tried to like it....... This place seemed like it had just had a makeover so I thought it deserved a look after having been there a few times before. The decor looked nice, the menu ok, and the coffee good but that's where it ended sadly and I gave it some serious tries, 4 to be exact.
One waitress forgot we were there and what we ordered and kept blaming it on a late night, the waiter couldn't carry more than 2 plates so had to put 1 on our table so he could use the spare hand to open the door!!!! There was a waitress there that was quick on the txt's but really slow on the uptake that I had an empty coffee in front of me and was wanting another one. And finally when we specifically ordered something egg and dairy free for an allergic child the chef thought he would put Aioli on the sandwich instead of cheese. WTF.
It really is a pity and goes to the value of training and only letting people who know what they are doing open or run cafes not mums with deep pockets.
Such a shame.

Yum!. Coffee is great and the baristas are extra cute! Breakfast menu is good - I concur with the comments about the 'smashed' avocado - but try the pulled pork and minted peas instead, love!!

The best in Melbourne! Amazing food, very friendly staff and great atmosphere. Currently the place to be. I have been going regularly now and can't get enough! Keep up the good work!!!

Amazing. I ordered the yoghurt parfait on wednesday 15/01 at around 12pm and it was very refreshing and tasted just great. The iced coffee was good and the staff was very friendly and helpful. We'll be back soon.

After waiting nearly a half hour for a coffee, arriving with curdled milk and watching the people around us come and go, before we had even received our drink order, left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Service was rude and underwhelming, and the food was average at best. We were told that a side constituted an alteration and may not have been possible and were unable to order several dishes on the menu. The wait for the food which we did eventually settle on (eggs on toast and corn fritters) was an hour. Needless to say it is unlikely that we will be back.
Lovelife_79
My 3rd visit here and this place continues to deliver!! Food is fresh, modern and finally a place that knows how to season (no extra salt needed ;)
Living Loving Melbourne
It's quite a quirky little place and the coffee is good. I had breakfast there which was excellent very fresh and tasty though however,I didn't like the price tag. For two coffees and breakfast you can expect to pay well over $30 this really detracts from the food, which is a same as it is only just around the corner from where I live and would be a great local.
Scrantic
Good coffee and cakes but breakfast/lunch have been hit n miss service has been off when they're busy but will give them another crack to see if they've improved.

Thought For Food
Just ok. I was so excited to try Where is Henry? as I am a local and love trying new places without having to travel to far in the morning. Considering the high standard associated with this area (think: The Pour Kids, Eden Espresso, Fergus etc), this cafe is JUST ok and is really missing the "wow" factor for me. I had the bircher museli which was served in a bowl that was about 1/8th full. Now, presentation of food is almost as important as flavour and I found the museli looked like it had already been half eaten thanks to the tiny portion and the misguided choice of the size of the bowl. In addition to this, my partner got the avocado smash, which ISN'T a smash, it is just pieces of tomato and avocado (i.e. something I make for dinner at home when I can't be bothered cooking) with the smallest amount of feta. What astounds me is that there this is clearly pointed out in most of the negative reviews of this place and is so easily rectified (i.e. change the name or actually smash the avocado), so why don't they?

Like I said, this place is average due to the high standard Melbournians have come to expect when it comes to their coffee and food. Due to there being a significant number of other high quality cafes to choose from in the area (where the menu is more diverse and the portions aren't a joke), I won't be back.
Cakelover85
Met up with a few girlfriends at this quirky hip little cafe! We enjoyed coffee and shared their range of delicious homemade bakery treats-delish! Will be back for sure!
ANGRY COFFEE MAN
Slow service BUT. I ordered a weak hot latte on Sunday 10/11 around 1pm and the barista made an EXCELLENTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT coffee.

Wowzers!
David Fleischmann
Slow service and inaccurate meals let down this new breakfast spot in Malvern. The simple breakfast staple of smashed avocado and eggs with goats cheese and cherry tomato is more accurately 1.5 pieces of toast with 1/2 a plate of tomato (not cherry tomato) and some avocado pieces and a speck of goats cheese. The cured salmon as an added extra could have salvaged the meal if it wasn't over proved for the meagre serving.

All in all very disappointing.
Rosie1983
Stumbled across this place, underwhelmed to say the least. Coffee was ok but ordered smashed avo with feta. I think the description needs to be changed on the menu as what appeared on the table was; chunks of avo and what could only be described as a treasure hunt to find the feta being obstructed by a jungle of tomatoes. Ingredients were fresh and tasty though. Also ordered a tea that never appeared.
Matterwaaa
Doesn't like. As a tourist I do not reccomend this place. The food is nothing special (less of everything) and overpriced.
Service so and so.

Amazing. Go!

In love.... Guys....what happens????? I went to the cafe only because I am in love with the Italian waitress Serena nice, good service, always smiling and now i miss her. She is disappeared. How can I live now?

One of the best breakfasts I've had in melbourne. The smashed avocado with poached eggs was delish. Great service, great coffee, kid and pram friendly! Will definitely be back soon

Duck confit salad-not what you expect...trust me...it's better! Flavours rocked my mouth! Cool place, fresh and relaxed vibe-will be back to tackle breaky!

Tried out this place for the first time. Coffee was good but food is boring. Ordered avocado mashed with feta, the plate came out with tiny crumbed feta, not so much avo also with sliced tomato. I thought the menu said mashed avocado with feta so ? Price overcharged, too pretentious.
Coffeeismysaviour
First time here, friendly service and nice decor. It could do without the commercial radio and unfortunately my soy latte was much too hot! Ordered tomato baked eggs, tomato sauce was watery with minimal chorizo and goats cheese, flavour still good and eggs cooked perfectly though. I also think this meal needs to be served in a larger dish so there is room to move stuff around. All in all it was a nice place but could do with a few pointers
Sarahlooto
Disappointed. Prices and menu change, what the hell?? No one else charge this much, is not the right way to work, and coffee COLD. Not coming anymore.

Just tried this place out for the first time since the new owners. All I can say is wow. Great coffee and excellent eggs. Efficient and friendly staff. When you've got it - it really shows. Great work guys. It doesn't hurt the the staff are cute too!

Great coffee and food. Beautiful coffee and food with a laid back atmosphere. Will definitely be back!

Limited menu. Food so- so. Service... What's that word??

Off to a bright, classy start. This cafe has been smartly transformed from a former dark and lifeless space into a bright, sassy eatery that is clearly winning over custom from some flagging competitors. It looks like some serious dollars have gone into the refit, but it seems to work well. The food and coffee offerings are attractive and interesting, if possibly a little restrictive and not the cheapest in this strip - but we'll be back.
Ray
Great food. Beautiful salads with amazing flavours, the hamburgers where the best I have ever tasted, great atmosphere, outdoor area is georgous
Will be back

Love the vibe, Great coffees that I haven't had elsewhere. Strongly suggest you try the tomato baked eggs.

With a Fitzroy vibe on the south side. Shabby chic / hip interior, friendly staff and delicious reasonably priced food. From the moment you walk through the door, this place becomes your new found local, a hidden gem, away from the crowds with a smooth atmosphere and alluring vibe.

Most notable; the pork sliders, smashed avocado for breakfast & plum friand. Yum yum yum! Check this place out, thank me later

Great cafe in a great location, was pleasantly surprised by this place. The food was quite delicious too (meatballs)!

Yet another Hipster Cafe that delivers. Is it wrong that i knew this cafe was going to be hipster just by the name?
The trend continues of hipster cafes using first names in the naming of their establishments. Think 'proud mary', 'brother alec' 'jack &daisy' 'little henri', 'miss marie', 'two bob', 'jackson dodds' 'St,Ali', 'Tom Phat', 'Percy's Aeroplane' Etc. Stepping aside from my rant one thing most of these places all have in common is that they are consistently delivering and 'where is henry?' is no exception. It has an awesome layout to start with, a mix of modern and Edwardian architecture which makes for a cool layout. The coffee is from 'mailing room' and the barista did a good job of doing it justice. The food was great as all 6 of us enjoyed our meals, wagyu beef burgers, mini pork rolls etc. The service was also great with an Italian waitress possessing a thick accent and delivering attentive service making our stay even more enjoyable. I spelt my coffee and they replaced me with another one free of charge which was also nice. Overall, this place is worth visiting even if you have to drive the distance. With a modern Australian inspired menu, good coffee and an interesting decor it is definitely a great new addition to the hipster cafe family.

Coffee: 4/5
Food 4/5
Service: 4/5
Ambiance: 4.5/5
Value: 4/5
Total: 20.5/25 (82%) *Pending further review

Where is Henry ? - lunch venue Malvern. I had the beef burger, really lovely to say the least . clearly the food is great I would say the experience was the icing on the cake as the staff and the owner really made us feel comfortable , unlike other places nearby .

highly recommend this place .

David

Nice fit out of the cafe, and running a nice coffee brand, unfortunately the positives end there. They don't know what they are doing with the mailing room blend or origins, and the service was lousy. Was also quite overpriced for what it was and also the breakfast menu which looked great finished at 12. The lunch menu was no where near as appetising
Jack
Great little cafe with a lovely atmosphere. Staff are friendly, I had an egg, bacon toast style breakfast with a latte that was top notch.
Mish
Really really lovely interior and courtyard. I had a coffee made by the architect owner last week and it was fab but since then the 2 girls have made them aren't they weren't as good. I really hope the owner passes on his talent. I hv only had the eggs which were really lovely & perfectly cooked. The staff don't seem to reflect the same designer atmosphere & character of the cafe.
Alex
I had the pork sliders and it was delicious. A nice little snack for a fair price. See you again.
