Review Fortune's Asian Cuisine - Malvern

A no-frills local Cantonese Malaysian restaurant owned by a middle aged couple. Most of the customers come here to get takeaway so they were preparing orders like crazy and didn’t really have time to serve us (not really their fault I know, but didn’t add to the experience). We ordered a combination laksa and roti chanai with curry vegetables. Laksa was a bit too milky and creamy for my liking and the Yong tofu also kind of lacked flavour. I asked for chilli and they only have one type of chilli oil, no Sambal - maybe that was why the laksa was missing a punch. Good thing was that the chilli oil is actually home made and had a kick to it. I think they probably do better in the Chinese style stir fries as I could smell the amazing wok hei coming out of the kitchen... will probably try one of those next time if I happen to come back.

The Peking duck was delicious and unique in wrappings....the sauce was just right for an appetizer. Steam Barramundi was delicious and the texture of the fish was exquisite.

Fortunes Asian Cuisine - Malvern, Vic Chefs laksa w/ stuffed egg plant, tofu, and bean curd. Fortunes Asian Cuisine is a Malaysian x Chinese restaurant on Glenferrie Road, a shop that’s got a steady flow of Uber eats deliveries coming and going. Because I like my meals hot and I don’t pander to these corporations 30% surcharge for a meal I decided to eat in. It’s the only way - especially for soup. Who wants a joke warm soup any way. A menu with a huge title that said Chef’s Special was thrust in front of me - I was delighted to see a range of stuffed items on offer, something I hadn’t seen on this town before and something that M Yong Tofu in Flemington does extremely well. I ordered the laksa with stuffed things and it came out to my table quickly. Now many things lack colour including my skin pigmentation after a night of heavy drinking but I was quite shocked at the sheer lack of colour in this dish - it was a pasty off white colour (just like me). As soon as I saw the colour of this dish I immediately ordered some samba and dumped it into the laksa as I was almost certain this broth would need more flavour. That was my first mistake - the laksa while not completely flagrant did already have quite the spicy kick to it. Something I wasn’t expecting from a hole in the wall chinese x Malaysian restaurant in Malvern. The laksa contained two types of noodles - a must but didn’t contain much else other than the stuffed tofu. Somewhat of a let down considering competitors add eggplant, broccoli, beans to jazz up their soups. While this wasn’t the most exciting soup a basic elements were there and the stuffed items were something different. However these lacked lots of flavour that could have helped the very basic dish. 🥢🥢🥢🥢🥢 Broth Flavour: 🍜🍜🍜/5 Soup ingredients: 🍜🍜.5/5 Service: 🍜🍜🍜/5 Overall: 🍜🍜.5/5 🥢🥢🥢🥢🥢

Totally recommend this place, open Sunday's, delicious, authentic Malay Chinese at a reasonable price. Malay chef prepared meals.

One of my favourite restaurants, we’ve been a regular customer here for many years. The staff are very nice and friendly , as soon as she sees us , she knows what we’re going to order. We love their delicious foods especially their dumplings and roasted chicken.
I would definitely keep coming back here.

Ordered from Uber eats. Highlight were the pan fried pork dumplings and giant prawn crackers. The char sui wasn’t great, very small thin slices and a weird tangy sauce all over it. Fried rice had little flavour. The soup stock for the wonton and noodle soup was quite bland too. Won’t be ordering from here again in a hurry.
Eat. Sleep. Create. Repeat.
Had a quick fast food at 3.30pm after walk. Glad the resturant opens. Fry noodles and Laksa with stuffed meat favoured ok, standard Asian taste. Value for money and a good rest.

Ordered takeaway here for Father's Day dinner. Roast Duck Lou Mee, Mongolian Beef and Chicken & Cashew Nut. All tasted great. Meat to vegetable ratio was perfect with great vegetable variety and quality. Mongolian Beef and Chicken Cashew tasted as you expect for westernised Chinese which is exactly what I was after. I'd never tried Duck Lou Mee so gave it a go. It is flavoured with sweet soy sauce and consisted mostly of thin egg noodles. Was nice but I was flavour fatigued by the end. Also had to watch out for the bones in the duck. Overall a good Chinese takeaway dinner experience. I would recommend it.

We both decided on laksa for lunch and it was okay but needed a serious whack of veggies to give crunch and substance. Service was fine. The venue is pleasantly tired but fine.

This restaurant is in Malvern and it serves Cantonese food. Originally I was going to go to Gllow but they were closed. This visit happened on Boxing day where not many places were open. The manager was friendly but his worker was not. This worker was sullen and looked like he wanted to go home. Moreover the lady could not understand English much.

It's a hit and miss for me at Fortunes. I ordered their duck lou mee and my wife ordered their laksa. The laksa was pretty tasteless, which is bad considering it is "laksa". But my duck lou mee was great! I may give it another try sometime in the near future.

I come here for one reason and one reason only- a huge bowl of takeaway laksa with thick egg noodles and fresh veg. It's very hot (chilli) and just how I like it. The stuffed eggplant entree is great too in a rich sauce. Everything else I've tried was ok, but I adore that laksa. Don't plan to eat in- its very bare bones in terms of atmosphere.

Ingredients were fresh and the meats was plentiful. Portion sizes were large and presents good value for money.

The flavours of the dishes overall were rather unspectacular. The laksa was way too spicy without much other flavours to back it up. The chilli overpowered all else and rendered the soup and noodles rather tasteless otherwise.

Overall a half decent asian joint that was cheap and uninspiring. Good for a quick and cheap feed but not much else.

Overall, great restaurant for food and value. The highlight was the roast duck, it was crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside. Would recommend to anyone who has a great taste in Malaysian and Chinese food.

Don't Bother - average food does not make up for terrible service
I phoned in a home delivery order at 6.46pm and was told it would take 15 minutes. I called back one hour later to be told that the order hadn't even been cooked yet. In the end the order arrived 2 hours after the original order was placed with no apology or any sort of compensation. To add insult to injury the order was incorrect. While the food was OK, it is by no means excellent, and certainly fails to make up for the appalling service.

Great Laksa, noodle soups (vegetarian), and BBQ Pork (soup and on rice). Really nice food, that doesn't make you feel bloated. Fresh, tasty, The soup bases are exceptional, the owners are really nice people too. This restaurant has become our favourite local Asian, place. Reasonably priced.

Love their Nasi Goreng, always order it every time there, good choice for quick, cheap , and good food.

We had home delivery on a Friday night. Curry chicken had good balance and nice little kick of chilli. Chinese broccoli with garlic was well cooked, not too garlicky. Mixed BBQ meats, duck and pork was generous and not too much bone. Took about 45 mins to arrive. A bit over priced for this type of food but rents aren't cheap on Glenferrie Road I guess.

The food here is definitely not Chinese. It is a Malaysian place serving various 'Asian' dishes. Everything we've ever ordered here has been overpowering, drenched in 'sauce' and too heavy in taste. Too expensive for what you get.

Blaaaaaaaand. Service was very nice but unfortunately the food was way below par, wont be coming back.

Fantastic restaurant! Very well priced. I've tried many things on the menu and never been disappointed. Highly recommend this place. Plus the owners are very nice.

We just went there to get a small box of roast pork to take away, they filled up half the box and charged us $9.50. Never again.

Amazing food. Great service. Peking Duck was perfection

Good food at reasonable prices. The plain and ordinary look of this suburban Chinese/Malaysian cafe belies the quality and value of the food they serve. The steamed yum cha dumplings (prawn, pork & chives, vegetarian etc) are excellent, as is the Peking Duck and the Char Siu. Well worth a visit.

Overstated voucher value. Dined with the $49 voucher for a 7 course meal. It's not really a 7 course meal. 1st course was a combo of one spring roll, one curry puff and one chicken dumpling. 2nd course was peking duck (2 pieces each). 3rd was chicken corn soup. 4th was shrimp with veggies. 5th was chicken curry with rice. I think the 1st course is supposed to be considered 3 courses, but it's 3 small items served on one plate...hardly 3 courses. 4th and 5th courses are not full size. Other than the misleading "7 courses" the food was tasty and two drinks (pop/tea) are included. I don't think the meal was worth the $105 claimed on the voucher, but probably approximated the $49 of the voucher.

Great Peking Duck. $49 deal voucher, the food was great. Peking Duck was just delicious, followed by the home made dumpling, chicken corn soup, prawns finished up with Malaysian Curry/rice. The service was slow (could see only 3 people working), but very friendly. Uncertain that it's actually valued at $105 as outlined for 2 people, overall pleasant evening with great food.

Scoopon $39 deal...... Not worth it ... Very average ..... More for takeaways than dine in .

AMAZING!. Fantastic personal service, I travel extensively thoughout Asia, and this is by far the best! Try the Char Kway Tow - you will not order it anywhere else again!

Great Laksa!. Fortunes makes a great laksa (roast pork is the best!) and take away is always consistent and prompt. Now my default when I can't be bothered cooking.

Love their roast pork and soya chicken! Roast pork is crispy and lean whereas soya chicken is very succulent!
