Review Willim Expresso Cafe - Malvern

Clare Haig
Willim Cafe is under new management and I recently stopped by with my extended family to check it out .There were 8 of us altogether, and the friendly staff were very helpful and accommodating (young children can be very picky). The food was delicious, coffee and drinks lovely, and the new decor comfortable and inviting but the thing we loved ( apart from the wonderful food) was that it was child friendly.Thank you Sue and Jason ,we'll be stopping by regularly.

Great coffee, pleasant settings and friendly staff. Convenient location, tho parking can be challenging during peak hours. Great salads and wraps. Intimate for a meeting, highly recommended.

Awesome coffee!! Tasty treats!! A place you just want to sit and chill!! Also a vista of characters coming and going providing good entertainment while sipping your coffee.

After reading a personal account today on a very prominent and active FB page, of the sexual harassment of a nursing mother in your cafe, by a male customer and a staff member, I will not set foot on your premises. What a disgrace.

Great little cafe, with friendly and happy staff. Amazing coffee and the salads and the turkey, bire, cranberry sandwich and smashed avo for breakfast is recommended. Definitely worth the money :)

Maybe it was unusually busy day? Only ordered simple toast and coffee, but it took some time to arrive. The coffee tasted alright; as they use Five Senses coffee beans, but my milk was sooo hot!

Trying to become an expert in my area is an easy yet expensive title to accomplish.
Willim Expresso is courageous in its deliverance of being a cafe I mean that it's competing with very strong outlets in the area.
I arrive after brekky, brunch time so I was disappointed that it didn't serve all day breakfast but that's my fault for not reading in advance.
I wasn't greeted the moment I walked through the door which was kind of a let down since first seconds of a new customer entering matters greatly.
I ordered the chicken and dill wrap. Not made to order unfortunately. Though delicious nonetheless.
Ordered a latte. Good taste.
They have a good thing here please check them out. Menu looks delicious, I shall come here during brunch time to solidify my tastebuds suspicion.

Willim used to be one of my favourites! I moved and decided to check it out today for my daily caffeine fix, but I was pretty disappointed. The coffee was terrible! Tasted like instant coffee instead. The barista took no care with the milk and it tasted merely heated up and no creamy taste to it. Rather disappointed. Not coming back so soon!

Lovely little spot with a relaxed atmosphere, friendly welcoming staff and cosy decor. Well presented and enticing food on offer will have you wanting to try it all! Can see why it's a favourite amongst locals.

OK so yesterday I needed just a toilet (hey I’m an old guy!) and so ended up having coffee here…now I am a world famous misanthrope but talked to this delightful Lebanese owner for an hour (OK so that’s an hour I’m not gonna get back)…what a gorgeous charismatic lady! (and place)… so then I had lunch there the next day… who knew broccoli and almonds could be so good! And a schnitzel certainly as good as my Grandma’s (RIP). Probably channelled the old dear on to the plate….
They have me a little hooked…I’m coming tomorrow…so watch out

Great little spot. And lovely staff very friendly. All the cabinet food looks amazing but unfortunately the coffee I ordered was not so good. I asked for a long black and I received a watered down coffee this was like a long long black. It tasted like watered down coffee. Shame because they use great coffee beans. Was really hoping for this to be good.

Love this little local cafe!

Had cappuccino, chai latte, and ham & cheese croissant.

I preferred cappuccino rather than chai latte. I liked the coffee which had a bit of strong acidity and bitterness. The chai latte was a little too sweet for me, and I wanted it to have a stronger chai tea flavour.

Ham & cheese croissant was tasty.

The service was quick, very warm, and personal. I want to try their house made cakes and wraps next time.

Came in and had a coffee and toasty and the staff were so friendly - great little renovation to the place and cosy seating inside. Bit hard with a pram though to be honest but on a sunny day out the front it's perfect - just squishy inside. Lots to read too - papers and magazines and lots of parking down the side street too!

Willim Cafe is under New Management so we decided to check it out and had lunch there last Saturday..Wow! what a transformation, all new decor, light, bright and comfortable. The food display had our mouths watering.Nothing was too much trouble as the staff happily catered for our four Grandchildren and ourselves. Our meals were delicious and Coffees piping hot. Will definitely be returning to Willim Cafe sooner than later.

Fantastic little cafe!
I had a relaxing, sunny brunch in the front yard. The food: freshly made chicken wrap was divine!. Service was excellent and whole atmosphere was very relaxed. Great new management and very friendly staff! I will be coming back more often.

Best Chai latte in all of Malvern/Armadale. Working in the area I have been to every coffee shop around as this one does fantastic drinks and service is friendly and fast. Highly recommend for a coffee stop.

Under New Management. This neglected little gem will once again be a favourite destination for a great coffee and a gourmet sandwich..among other delicious surprises....
Let Me Feed You
Inside, Willim hosts a pleasant mix of clientele, there were a few young people, a couple of elderly women gossiping over cappuccinos, and the perennial cafe-sitter of the Eastern suburbs, The Soccer Mum. Nonetheless, I really loved the attractive, celler-esque fit out and atmosphere of the place. First up we ordered coffees, a flat white for D and a latte for me. My coffee was maybe

Coffee is shocking. That.... Coffee is shocking.

That is all.

Sunday brunch.. Coffee was nice, staff were friendly and attentive. I came here on a Sunday, and saw a $10 special outside the cafe, which included bacon, eggs, tomato and toast with a coffee. It sounds awesome until it gets to you on a plate - toast was cheap multigrain bread that anyone could buy from Coles or Woolworths. Bacon was hardly cooked and the presentation wasn't all that great. In other words, I could have prepared this meal myself at home. I can't even say it was worth the $10. It's a shame that such a nice location serves food like this. The only thing that Willim needs improving on is the food quality, everything else is on point.

Just awful. We came for breakfast, ordered just scrambled eggs, oh my , we just could not believe how bad these eggs were.

They were nearly white in color , surrounded by a pool of water! We asked could you please take the water off, they came back just as tasteless and soggy, with the rim of water around the eggs still. No apologies, no nothing, she slammed the plate down to de- water the scrambled eggs

AWFUL!!!!!!!! Do yourself a favour do not eat here, if they cant make scrambled eggs I cant imagine what more complicated dishes would taste like.
We remember being here over a year a go and it was great- now its really bad, not to mention the unfriendly staff!

Gone down hill in a big way. Went here with a girlfiriend yesterday for the first time in a few years. What used to be a stylish good quality Malvern cafe has turned in to a shabby, dated eatery lacking love and well... actual food.
Upon entering we were told that they had run out of both chicken and pumpkin (which happens - I understand). I decided to just go with sourdough toast, only to be told they were out of sourdough as well!
My friend ordered a pastami sandwhich which ended up being one piece of bread with pastrami and half melted cheese on it - it was so salty she could only eat half of it.

The younger girl who worked there seemed lovely but the woman who I assume is the owner was not so great. We lost our appetite even more after we saw her lifting her top up to scratch her torso for longer than necessary in the servery area where our food was prepared!

Never again.

So disappointed. Havent been this place for ages. ...just had bf here. ..OMG! what happened? cant really look at the dish put in front of me....

I am sitting here now and it is clear that management has changed hands since my last visit. The food is terrible, service is awkward and I'm kicking myself because I had planned to eat at a different cafe that always provides a high quality. Will not come back even if someone paid me to.
Simsia
Don't believe everything you read on the Internet.. I come here regularly since the owners have changed and yes it has changed but have some compassion for people toughing it through this critical industry, the coffee is still fantastic, and the owners are lovely. My daughter who has breast fed in the past has had no problem at all when we have come for lunch. I'll keep supporting this little gem.
Janine Shifman
No respect for breastfeeding mothers!. A friend was treated disgustingly by the cafe when trying to breastfeed her new born son. No mother should be made to feel uncomfortable when breastfeeding, its a natural and beautiful motherly duty. Willim you should be assamed. Mothers beware!
MC Hummus
Worst Lunch in Memory. Now clear this cafe has changed hands since our last visit. The food was terrible - I reluctantly ate mine but did not enjoy it one bit and neither did my wife who was also struggling with her choice. Hard to believe a cafe in Melbourne can be so bad. The menus were well past their ''use-by'' in terms of cleanliness, and a glimpse into the kitchen area when paying made me wish I had not eaten there. Avoid at all costs.
Stef
Not going back. I was quite disappointed with my last visit here. We have been a few times before and really enjoyed the coffee and food. I feel that owners have changed. The coffee was average and the food bland.
Renee Sturtevant
Has the potential to be something great but hasn't got there. Most disappointing is the overpriced and bland food. Won't be returning.
Ezzzmay
The coffee was weak, the food was bland, and was over priced. Not worth it!
Melb Eater
Bland. I really wanted to like this place but it completely missed the mark.
Check Please
Pretty good overall. The service was slow, and they were quiet, seems that drying up was more important. But the wait was worth great coffee, poached egg with avo and feta mash.

Skip it. I went to Willim Espresso today. I wish I hadn't. I had a cappuccino that had no taste of coffee. It was like a weak flat white. As someone else noted, there was little to no foam on the top. How hard is this? You would think a coffee shop could get a cappuccino right. Alas, no. I also had a breakfast bun. Horrible! It had cold scrambled egg, a small amount of ultra-thin ham and tons of ketchup. The service was fine and friendly. This place will fail soon, if they do not improve their coffee and food. Avoid it! There are better places close by.
Kristen_P_R
Coffee only venue. The setting - great for breakfast
Seating both inside and outside - good perhaps even cosy
Coffee orders - taken quickly arriving promptly
Menu - limited as there is no kitchen
Would you like eggs? - I wouldn't bother as there is only one type and they're slow cooked runny (an acquired taste). Also when asked for hard eggs, we were delivered a cooking lesson.
Opting for a simple option? - ensure they don't burn your toast, although all is served with a generous dose of condiments

Perhaps this venue is suited best to a coffee and cake scenario until they expand?
Justin Kony
Willim espresso was great. The staff told me they had a new menu, it is limited however the items were creative, affordable and ultimately delicious. I had a braised beef and Gorgonzola jaffle (jaffles are back!) it was so tasty. The breakfast smoothie was amazing! Friendly service and good food. Keep it up Willim!
Curly Sue
Good coffee, friendly staff. The menu is a bit limited but what they do, they do well.

Terribly shocked !. Shocking!! I was so shock with what I received from Willim couple weeks ago. My latte was way too hot and chicken sandwich that I ordered was cold. Not only that, the bread was also over toasted, making it hard to cut. I think this is just unbelievable considering willim has good reputation. One tips for Willim, be careful who are you serving. Anyone can be a coffee judge!
Cinderella
Great place. Cosy and warm, I was made welcome by the staff, my coffee was rich and creamy and my porridge was served fast and very tasty. Definitely will be back!
Frankie
Sad. What has happened to this formerly lovely place. awkward teenage girls in dirty clothes running the front? why arent there any professional staff here at midday on a sunday? the 'new' menu is tired and boring, with a weird blurb on it talking about giving the locals what they need. the food had no love in it. when I walked in I was suprised to see it virtually empty but having sat there for a few minutes I understood why. there's too many other places to go where they take the food and service seriously. this place used to be really great. hope the owner makes some drastic changes.

Will not return. Poor service. Worse chai latte I ever had. Ordered extra sides of mushrooms and was served 6 small pieces of button mushrooms!
Zander Berends
Good coffee. Really good coffee, disappointed the best looking thing on the menu had run out. Will be back.

TERRIBLE SERVICE PARED WITH INEDIBLE FOOD. Ok, I get that the clientele around Glenferrie road in Malvern aren't ideal. Having waitressed around that area myself; they are generally rude, pretentious and pushy. After walking into Willim one Saturday morning, which I had visited frequently previously, I was received with the rudest service and most disgusting food I have ever allowed to pass my lips. It was around 8 degress and pouring outside, and when I asked the waiter if it was at all possible to close the door which we where sitting right next to - they were completely full so I didn't think this was an over-the-top request - I was told... "Ummmm. No, sorry. We have to keep it open." Didn't even give me a reason as to why..
Then I ordered the smashed avocado which came as a wafer thin spread with no apparent fetta in sight and a wedge of lemon. Revolting. And I proceeded to pay $14 for that.
The coffee is burnt and bitter.
Definitely will not be going back.
A Man Of Melbourne
Average coffee today. Delicious warming porridge with poached pears. Very busy at 10:30 (full inside) then empty except for us at 11.
The Fussy Stomach
Absolutely all smiles. Coff.... Absolutely all smiles.
Coffee great and I like the setoit inside and out.
James Robert
Place was buzzing today. Great coffee, great food. Smiles everywhere I could see, Staff and customers. Good value. When you read some of the reviews I think it helps to remember they are a cafe not going after chefs hats. Calm down, relax. Malvern dosnt have many cool cafe's like this, too many spoilt princesses in Malvern I think.
Gloane
Dissappointing - try too hard to be something they're not. I went to Willim Espresso the other day after reading about them in the Age's Good Coffee Review.
It did not live up to my expectations. Firstly, my cappuccino came out with NO froth. It was basically a flat white with chocolate on top. The froth is the whole reason I order cappuccinos, so its absence was significant to me. A cafe that is known for good coffee should be able to get milk-froth ratios right.
The next sore spot was that our food took OVER AN HOUR to come out. The awkward wait staff didn't make it any better. Whenever they would ask them to check on our food they would come back saying "its coming out right now"... 15 minutes later... it still hadn't arrived. That happened a couple of times. It eventually came out, but by that time we were anxious to leave, and scoffed down our meals without savouring them. My Boyfriend's "Willim brekky" (poached egg on toast with avocado, ham and fetta) was good, but not great. He asked for a fried egg but got a watery poached egg. My french toast was, again, good, but not great. It was much smaller than what I was expecting based on the price.
When we went in to pay we saw that there was a single chef cooking the breakfasts (he had 5 orders lined up) one at a time on a portable hot-plate right next to the coffee machine. They didn't even have a proper kitchen; no wonder our meals took so long!
I think it was unprofessional and misleading of them to offer such a delux breakfast menu considering they don't have the right set -up for it. They do not warn customers before hand that they only have 1 chef and so there will be a considerable wait to receive their meal. If I had known that my breakfast would take an hour to come out, I would have just had a coffee and had breakfast somewhere else.
They need to work on customer relations, and get a proper kitchen and setup!
Overall, I would not come back to Willim. They are trying too hard to be like every other breakky-coffee indie cafe, but are simply too small and cannot support it.
Me
Solid. Found the service a touch awkward, but my long macchiato was rich and full of body. the granola was delicious - though they could do with larger serves of milk with it! spied several other breakfast options which all looked great. the portion sizes are quite modest, which is refreshing - particularly when they are priced accordingly! won't hesitate to return when in the area.
Thesupster
Great coffee!. Fantastic coffee and if you feel like breakfast, give their Smashed Avocado a go. It comes with a poached egg and it's absolutely yum! If you don't like your whites runny though, don't get the poached egg!

Too Cool For Service. I have been to Willim a few times and decided to invite a friend to join me for breakfast on a Friday moning. the way this cosy cafe runs totally depends on who happens to be rostered on that morning. This group were way too into their social plans for the weekend and checking out the music to give a dam about their customers. Orders finally given were soon forgotten. Way too into calling people "love" and all that wanky stuff that seems way too commonplace thesedays. Such pathetic service for a place that hold so few is not acceptable these days. Get over yourselves! Us coming to your cafe or not will mean that you may not have a very social weekend to plan, love. Poor show!!
Amy
Absolutely loved this place, amazing coffee and food- I had smashed avocado. Our waitress was so friendly and made genuine conversation with us. A very relaxed atmosphere. Can't wait to go back!

Chosen work local. After a few weeks of research, Willim is officially my new work local. Service is consistently great with the barista knowing my order which is always a nice touch. They often have a 'guest roaster' with beans from some of the best coffee spots in Melbourne, adding a nice surprise to my morning buzz. The house blend is very smooth with a unique hint of licorice and always served at the right temperature!
Coffee Doctor
Disappointing coffee
NomadicWomen
Will be back. Fantastic coffee, creamy, taste and thus delicious!!! For bonus points the guys who served me were friendly and funny!
Rob Lugton
Service was a bit slow, but they look flat out, so that's ok. Food and coffee were excellent and worth the wait!
Judig
Best coffee ever. Delicious coffee and great food.
Nwity
With equally nice (though different) coffee and better, wider breakfast offering to be found at Eden round the corner, Willim can't afford to annoy customers with aloof and unwelcoming service.
Kaushik
Have been here a few times, good coffee and like the place
Loveshack
My favourite local cafe, with the best coffee. Love the smashed fetta and avocado toast with poached egg and tomato. It's hard for them to do extravagant meals due to lack of kitchen, but they do well with what they have got. Some of the waiters/ waitresses are too cool for school. But the owner always says hello and makes me feel welcome, remembers me, and makes the best coffee out of all his staff!
Tatti
Big mistake. Ordered coffees to go and an open toasted sandwich. Received one dried up toasted throw in the bin sandwich and a blank look when asked about my coffees.
Should have stuck with what I know best and stayed on Glenferrie Road
Joie De Vivre
There has been a write up about the place and I do agree that the coffee is good but breakfast is abit ordinary. Can't put them in the same category as Proud Mary or Three Bags Full. Malvern need a cafe like they have in Fitzroy. I'll come back for the coffee but that's about it.
Ros
Great location, lovely fitout, staff who forget your order then sneer at you when you voice your displeasure! I won't be back!
Aaron Wallis
Hmm, delicious. Great coffee. I always bring friends when they're in town. Make sure you try the mashed avocado and feta - it's awesome
Kay Method
Kay Method. Had a lovely brekky here a couple of weeks ago. Chilled out service, water on arrival. sublime coffee & raw sugar. Followed by lovely eggs. Will be back :)
Sarah
Amazing coffee, best in the area! Friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere..love it!
Tim
Best cafe in malvern/armadale. This place has the best coffee I know of in the area, and the food on offer is great. The handsome young owner Gerrick always makes you feel welcome
John Smith
Great place!. I love this place! The coffee is amazing, the fit out is super cozy and inviting, the staff cool and friendly and the food is tasty and well priced. Willim is easily up there with the best...
Georgie
Willim is a great new espresso cafe. Willim has the most amazing coffee and inexpensive piadinas & toasties. Gerrick, the young owner, knows all his regulars. The place has a great vibe with cool tunes, unique fit out and extensive outdoor banquet seating that gets the sun all day.

I highly recommend it!
Iggy
Dropped in to try the coffee after finding the owner via Twitter @WILLIMespresso. I'm glad I did try this place as they have a very nice latte and the breakfast we ordered is very nice. The cafe has nice & bright interior. The owner is very friendly. Looks like he works on his own? But as soon as we ordered he told us he had 5 coffees to make so that was a nice notice/warning that it might take a while. But it's not long before we get our coffee then breakfast. Will definitely come again.
