Review Sunset Sabi - Manly

Sani Ario
Absolutely top notch service. From the host caringly putting us on a wait list then following through, to our waitresses who were doing ten things at once while keeping a smile with a mask on - just brilliant and most appreciated in these covid times. Our dishes as pictured were as delicious as it looks, with the prawns and the dank roll being stand outs. The only minor flaw was the after thought "sweet burger" desert, which was a miss. I wouldn't re-order it. In all, excellent place with an amazing pumping, rowdy vibe. Great place to eat with friends.

Great vibes, delicious food, lovely service. Everything is perfect to enjoy a nice diner with friends. We were seated at the bar it was so intimate and very nice. Fancy and tasty Japanese food. There is a terrace in summer.

We didnā€™t really have a good experience here and while I feel bad leaving a 2 star review, itā€™s an honest one. Of the 3 waitresses on the Wednesday night, 2 wore tops with baggy sleeves. One of them consistently reached over when placing dishes down, brushing her sleeve over the sushi rolls that were already by our table. It was truly gross and a reflection of poor training to allow inappropriate attire and for the the waitress to not walk around the table. The food & cocktails were not bad but nothing special. Overall not a place we would come back to.

Thanks guys, lovely place to be and no complaint for service and food , one point lost was music not fit environment. Please take my advise . Both waiters are nice and kind , will introduce your food and how to eat it . Time controls and top up on time . Definitely deserve tips. This place is very busy please give them time to pick up your call and back to you if you wait in front door . Dinner open 16:00pm-22:00pm, please make reservation if possible . NO BYO It is a Modern JP food place ,when you first walk in this place you feel like ā€œhold one . This is not a sushi place .ā€ Sabi mix OZ soul in JP food . Relax but everything still keep details. I had four dish by myself , canā€™t stop and absolutely love most of them . Must try item is opening with double double gyoza , trust me this is the gyoza you never had in your life .made with Waugh beef cheese ,Mac sauce and veggies. First bit with full mouth of Wagyu , but you still have this Mac and cheese favorite. What a companion!!! I always order Karage in JP restaurants, this dish is not easy , sabi did 7/10 , crisp and chicken is not too dry . Favor was just ok , keep your double double gyoza sauce for this karage ,You will thank me late . Main dish I had is dank , seafood sushi roll, fresh but not fishy . You also can request Nigir . Last one I had is chicken yakitori , not recommend, it is not traditional yakitori , more like chicken meat ball ,I am not a fan with this one . All in all , lovely place to be , if you want to try all dish in one go , ask your friends of four , come together with you and try set menu .

The food is fantastic, excellent range of drinks to select from. The service is fantastic and second to none. If one is looking for a great Japanese cuisine. I highly recommend to dine here. Prices are just as great as the food and service. Highly recommended ten out of ten. Thank you for a great night to the team at Sunset Sabi!!

I love this place!!! 10/10 every time, I'm a local and this is my favourite restaurant. The food is impeccable, service is great, cocktails and wine are delicious but more importantly the food, the flavours are an explosion in ur mouth. I could eat their food all day every day...yum yum yum

Best restaurant in Manly hands down! Food is amazing! Cocktails are delicious! Service is 5 star! My one and only complaint is that they don't have a by the glass Champagne on the menu. I've asked quite a few times for them to add one, but they're not hearing me. It would just make my experience extra special if they added a bottle of bubbles sold by the glass to the menu. This is my second time back and has the set menu. What an amazing experience. I could not fault any dish that was served. What a unique experience of flavours, Sunset Sabi is setting the bench mark of good food and drinks in a relaxed casual dining experience in the abundance of restaurants in Manly.

So damn good! Finally I made it after many attempts at booking for Fridays and Saturdays failed due to its popularity - my top tip is to go on a Sunday or early week! Stunning sushi fusion combinations/ flavours, beautifully presented and not a bad price... Give me more! ļæ½

Love Sunset Sabi! Its perfect to go for a casual meal with friends or date night. The best way is to order three or four dishes and share. I love the double double gyoza and the soba noodles. The cocktails are all really yummy and they have a good winer selection. Highly recommend!

This place gets packed, has pulsing music, a great vibe and attentive staff. The crowd are mostly young bpā€™s. The cocktail guys are mesmerising to watch while you wait for your meals. And you will wait.
We ordered kingfish, unagi, endamame, and wagyu beef. They were good but the portions are tiny so order a lot of plates or you may end up at the pizza joint up the road like I did. We paid $75 with one beer, so not exactly cheap.

We had lunch here and loved it, blue waffle taco was brilliant and the sashimi bowl. If you would like to try something different give this place a go. Japanese with a western heavy twist

I love this restaurant and I am so stoked it's open for lunch now! Great option for vegetarians, I can go crazy on the menu which is rare for me with Japanese cuisine. I love the decor, the staff are incredible and manage to remember everything without writing it down (goals). This place gets busy so I highly recommend making a reservation!

Great lil spot for Japanese - great ambience and decor. Food was delicious and service was fantastic ! A lil on the expensive side but good food nonetheless šŸ˜Š the paper menu is not extremely appealing - would defs suggest a revamp on those! Would go back for a date night perhaps šŸ˜Š

Sunset Sabi is a hidden gem in Manly which serves up fusion Japanese and came highly recommended by one of our friends. We were quite impressed by what we found when we dropped by for a special group dinner with a friend visiting from Hong Kong. With larger groups of 8 or more people, you have to get their Chefā€™s Tasting Menu but luckily at Sunset Sabi this actually a great value option at $45 a head for 10 shared dishes.

Took my partner here for his birthday dinner and it was a truly memorable evening.

The 'Japanese fusion' food sounds a bit weird but every dish was delectable with just the right balance of flavours.

There were also plenty of vegetarian options (which is great for someone not big on seafood).

Pretty much every dish is a tasting share plate, each of which are beautifully presented, and deceivingly substantial portions.

The ambiance is nice, decor interesting, and staff are very professional and attentive.

A lovely girl named Lulu was our waiter and she was excellent - I cannot commend her enough.

Thank you for an awesome dining experience.

Cute Mexican and Japanese fusion Izakaya style restaurant. Loved the Japanese signs above the bar area. Need to book in advanced. There are two seatings for dinner: 6pm and 8pm. Staff were friendly and attentive.

I'd love to rate this higher but I've been to similar priced restaurants with a similar concept (modern take on Japanese dining) and more tastier options on their menus (such as Tokyo Tina and Mr Miyagi in Melbourne). Nothing on Sunset Sabi's menu screamed out "eat me now!" unfortunately, even with the waiters recommendations.

Ordered the baked sushi and fried onigiri balls which were okay. It was strange having warm riced sushi but it worked, and was comfort-food like. The fried onigiri ball is pretty much an arancini.

Best thing we ate was the Mexican king fish sushi. It was fabulous: all the flavours worked so amazingly together and the pineapple puree topped with a slice of jalapeno finished the palate well. Love the crunch factor of the sushi too.

One of our mains was interesting. I would try another dish next time. The duck was tender, juicy and delicious. The sides were confusing: soaked watermelon (they were slimy in texture), combined with crumbs and a runny egg yolk. Wasn't sure if I was meant to combine them all? I did anyway and the taste was unusual.

Our other main was of pulled beef and tacos were delicious too, although nothing really to rave about. Watch out for the spicy kick though!

I would definitely come back to this place and will try other items on their menu. Hopefully they'll be more appetizing.

When I heard about the owners of my favourite Manly Mexican Chica Bonita opening another restaurant in Manly I just had to come and see what all the hype was about. Cocktails, interesting sushi combinations and Mexican influences is what you can enjoy at this hip, relaxed eatery. To start we tried the Shtballs which are actually like arancini balls with shiitake mushrooms inside. Yum. The Dynamite sushi is impressive with prawns and scallops covered with a creamy sauce. Super chicken is like a typical karaage deep fried dish. Finally, my favourite dish of the evening was the Kingfish in a Mexico roll served on impressive Japanese platter. This place has all the essential elements necessary for a great night out!

Love sunset sabi!
Japanese fusion at its best: fresh, tasty, nice atmosphere, nice bar area and benches

Great waiting area at the back, and great staff

An interesting culinary experience... the food looks Japanese but tastes Mexican. Where Japanese food is more subtly flavoured, the dishes at Sunset Sabi are flavour intense.

Quality, fresh produce. Friendly staff. Minimalistic decor and a welcoming environment.

A great venue for a relaxed evening, offering a menu just a little bit out of the ordinary.

The salty entrepreneurs that birthed cult venue Mexican Chica Bonita have done it again! The food, the interiors, the uber cool staff and the general atmosphere are a little ray of light newly arrived into the Manly food scene. Good job boys.

A great little joint successfully taking a gamble away from the usual restaurant strips in Manly. Actually, as an aside, the best restaurants in Manly are often those hidden away these days (think Jah Bar) so it shouldn't be any surprise to find Sunset Sabi where it is. The decor is very nicely done, casual without being sparse and modern without being stark.

The service itself is typical Manly, almost too cool for school but thankfully staying on the right side of that particular ledger. Drinks are appropriate with a good selection of Japanese beers and both Asahi Super Dry and Black (yum!) on tap. We didn't try the cocktails but they looked inventive and very reasonably priced. The wine list is short but also with a number of reasonably priced options and likely enough to satisfy most diners.

The dishes are Japanese inspired to some degree although many, such as the very tasty "super chicken", only with the addition of an often minute amount of a typical Japanese ingredient. This shouldn't put you off at all, just don't visit expecting anything nearing traditional Japanese.

We shared all the dishes which is clearly what the menu has been designed for although none are massive so if there's one you can't bring yourself to share you will easily give it a home on your own. We lined up a lovely selection of the aforementioned super chicken, dynamite baked sushi roll, seared eye fillet, beef L.A. taco, crap and scallop dank roll and kingfish in mexico roll.

All dishes were fresh with plenty to go around and very tasty. If I was to provide any negative comments it would be that I probably expected at least a few dishes to blow me away with their inventive combinations of flavours. Whilst there was definitely a creative spin on typical Japanese, most ingredients were fairly familiar to each other and as such none of the dishes had me marvelling at the chef's audacious combinations. This probably has more to do with my expectations given feedback from friends than anything else.

This is not to say that this should prevent anyone from visiting, I'd happily go back and intend to do so very soon. Well worth heading down there, a lovely night out.

Loved the food! Great modern adaptation to a Japanese regular. A few great taste explosions with the chicken, eggplant and tacos. Chilled sake made the night. Peace

Sunset Sabi is a relatively new venue in Manly (maybe six months). It is a chic Japanese inspired venue from the masters of Manly food cool, Sean and Luke Miller (not related). These are the guys that own Chica Bonita, one of the coolest little hole-in-the-wall Mexican places this far North of the border.Ā

Sunset Sabi have taken the somewhat stale elements of Manly food culture and lit a fire under its ass, there is a reason it is always packed.

Full review is now up so clickety click.

Fantastic!! Such amazing tastes and textures. Great friendly service. You won't get in without a booking or a long wait. This is our new favourite in manly.

New place to check out and definitely worth a visit - if you haven't been able to get a table yet or still thinking about checking it out.

Tip: Be there at 6pm to put your name down on the waiting list for a bar sitting table. šŸ˜šŸ˜

$110 for 7 amazing Japanese fusion dishes and sake for 2!

Everything from food, service and food came out super quick like I was right back in Tokyo!

Dynamite and sh*tballs...That's all you need to know...now go!

Something on the menu for everyone. My gf is a vegetarian and she even have been asking to go back. This place is awesome.

Came here for my pre birthday dinner, set up by my boy, and what an excellent surprise!
The place is bustling, very attentive waitstaff, and loving the Tokyo deco.

Visited Tokyo earlier this year and loved the reminder of their street and neon shop signs. Staff were wearing the denim pants popular with girls in Tokyo which really got my nostalgia cogs running.

Food comes out super super speedy! Every item we got was delicious and unique, all with a splash of Japanese influence. Fun night. Meals went down too quickly :)

Thanks guys, 2 weeks in I wish you all the best
