I normally don't give feedback unless it's up to its standard and this place certainly have. Went for a girlfriends bday dinner with a little baby. Gladly to say great service, beautiful interior, great staff, love the food texture and presentation!! Must say city quality like! Keep up the great work!! Definitely the girls and I will be coming back!!
I am a bit hesitant to write this review because I am not sure that I want this little secret hideaway flooded with people. But, I have been to Shinmai a few times and am just so impressed with the CBD quality food at a far more reasonable price. Each item is beautifully presented and super tasty. The maki rolls are a real joy to eat, but the takoyaki are probably my favourite. Highly recommended!

We ate at this place for the first time for our Wedding Anniversary. They were impressive! The service was great from beginning to end. They offer you complimentary sesame seed fish crackers while waiting for the food. We ordered 2 plates of sushi and slow cooked duck ramen — and while I’m pregnant, they ensured everything was made and cooked well and fresh. Even their toilets were clean! I definitely recommend this place!
Lovely Japanese restaurant located in Edgewater Boulevard, we ordered their bento boxes and they were yummy, however, the price was slightly higher compared to other restaurants. The service was good and the staff were friendly
Ordered some sashimi and sushi to share. Food took awhile to come but it tasted great! Also had the green tea brulee for desserr and that was superb!
Came here for dinner in a group of 5 on a weeknight and spent around 2.5 hours eating and chatting away in a relaxed setting. Loved the east-meets-west cultural decor - especially the menu which parodies the layout of TIME magazine. The staff were friendly and politely topped up our water all night long. The food was beautifully presented and well portioned. I had the salmon avocado sushi which was fresh and filling. My friends ordered a mix of tempura and udon soups, and they all seemed to enjoy their dishes too.
I didnt really like this place when they first opened, but still went a decent amount of times and so glad i didnt give up on it, their food has definitely gone better! I really enjoy going to this place because i love Japanese food, also good and convenient

I went here with the family (4p). For the 4 of us our bill came out to $270. Not a bad price. Portions here are small, think of it like fine dining sizes. The quality is pretty good, though the kitchen was quite slow. Dishes came out one by one, not sure if it was because we ordered all over the place or ordered too much. Wasn't a problem for us but something to keep in mind. Service was good throughout dinner and we were greeted when we entered. If food was a little faster it would be 5 stars. Overall very good night was had by all and would return again.
I think it’s great that we have proper sushi in the west of Melbourne.

Grilled Unagi
The unagi was very fatty and tender, when eaten with the rice the fish just melted in my mouth. The sauce used for grilled unagi is actually my favourite to mix with rice, it's so sweet and thick makes everything so flavourful.
Although the proportion looks small the dish was very filling, I didn't end up finishing it. Totally would recommend!!
Fantastic food and service and surrounds and drinks . I booked last minute online and in the notes mentioned if it was possible to get a quiet table- they saved two tables for us- to see which was better. Cannot rate this place highly enough. I will be back and cannot wait to be. See pictures.
Very pleased with the service, decor +++, food and drinks! All around great place! From the outside you wouldn’t think it was a very big restaurant. Once you step inside, you’re taken back to down town Osaka Dotombori. Such a lovely restaurant to have dinner at! Definitely must go to!
Great place for sushi lovers, and byo wine! Would definitely recommend the chicken and avocado sushi. Service was great and have been back 4 times.
I really enjoyed dinner tonight at Shinmai Tasty.
Firstly the service is great, place is clean and comfortable.
The food was delicious, very well priced and I good not fault it. Very tasty and somewhat unique with a mostly Japanese menu but influenced by other tastes. The oysters were delicious with roe, soft shell crab salad was perfect as it was touched with orange slices which balanced it perfectly.
Drinks were mocktails, very simple and nice.
Highly recommend this place for some simple Japanese. There is better Japanese around, but you get exactly what you expect here thus my rating.
This place is very nicely decorated. I have attached some of the interior pictures here, because they are just too good not to share. As for the food, the nigiri was nice and the lamb chops was surprisingly good too. I never had a lamb chops in a Japanese restaurant but hey it's very good. The citron drink was also very refreshing. If there's anything to complain about, it was the portion. They were just too small for the price in my opinion.
The restaurants atmosphere is really cool here! Service was great, really polite waiters. I had salmon sashimi, it wasn’t as fresh as I hoped but the salmon and chicken teriyaki dishes made up for it.

High quality food in a quirky little restaurant. Fantastic decor. Has all the usual dishes and some terrific new ones. Great deserts andhe chocolate mousse was something special. Love it

Some of the best tasting sushi flavours, and perhaps the best sushi restaurant in the western suburbs, period! Maribyrnong has been thriving now with some of the best food in the West of Melbourne and Shinmai Tasty is no exception. Located next to some of the greatest eateries in a pocket of Maribyrnong, Shinmai Tasty really loves up to its name.
From the moment you walk in, you will feel and hear genuine customer service as you are welcomed to a fantastic ambience. The glico man reminded us of Dotonbori whilst the little detail throughout really make for a great dining experience. With complimentary rice crackers to start off, we then feasted on the aburi salmon, soft shell crab, salmon avocado and tuna rolls.
The aburi salmon was hands down, Emily's favourite EVER. This is big news coming from someone who has tasted all aburi salmon in Japan and Melbourne, so it's a big deal. I thought it was very flavoursome also. The soft shell crab had an interesting filling, dashed with a piece of mint and very fresh tasting seaweed wrap. The best part was certainly the bigger soft shell crab as it melted in your mouth and was full of flavour. The salmon and avocado was also a stand out, with an abundance of salmon, fresh avocado and great tastes overall. What had to be the surprise of the evening was the tuna. We are team salmon sashimi mind you, however today the tuna far exceeded our expectations and was my personal favourite. Topped with an interesting red hair-like treat, sesame seeds, tuna, and so many interesting flavours, each bite was met with sheer 'shaking of heads' at just how good it was. Truly a unique but delicious tuna roll, my favourite tuna roll I have EVER tasted.
We will definitely be back and cannot recommend this restaurant enough. Thank you Shinmai Tasty for being the benchmark for all sushi restaurants, what a wonderful dining experience!

I am hesitant to write this review because I am not sure that I want this little secret hideaway flooded with people. Pros:
Good sushi, personally I like the aburi shake & tuna bomb roll, except one occasion where the sushi rice wasn’t cooked nicely & salmon was fishy. The eggplant chips or miso & takoyaki were ok.
Cons:
Unagi don was a bit hit & miss. I would skip the gyoza & okonomiyaki. Price is really steep & the waitressing is friendly but at times overzealous bordering on intrusive.
Final dish was served. This place is getting high marks from me. Where to I start? Sashimi was well presented (no limit in ice). Mixes tempura was a teaser but quickly filled my cravings. Bonus was the Sapporo on tap ‘yes! And the rest were superb. Nice place but small inside- must book before coming especially during weekends. Lovely service from the smiling ladies. Good job!
This restaurant is a quite place with nice staff. I like the sweet potato Sushi and mocktail. I went there with a group of two and it is a nice place with a small group.

Decided to go to a Japanese restaurant local in my area, heard of this place before although haven’t tried it out in which we decided to do. The restaurant has a nice warm set up to it, the waiter was friendly and the food was absolutely delicious! Ordered sashimi, edamame and California salmon roll which hit my tastebuds. Will be returning back again in the future!
Has very good customer service and portions were appropriately sized :) the takoyaki and edamame made a good entree for the chicken katsudon that was ordered after. The chicken and rice was layered with the broth which deepened the taste! Was a very good first experience will come again :)
Sashimi platter was good. It's a bit small but can't really complain. The takoyaki and seaweed salad is amazing. Very strongly recommended. The customer service is very friendly and attentive.
Been to this place twice and absolutely loved the dishes and warm staff welcoming.
Both instances I enjoyed the scallops gyozas and green tea sobs noodles with shashimi.

Best Japanese I've had in ages. Gyoza s were homemade and delicious. Sashimi cut beautifully. Beef tataki had a great sauce ,tempura light and crispy and teriyaki sauce was a but different to the standard bit in a good way. Great atmosphere ill be back
Cute little Japanese restaurant that brings a good mix to Maribyrnong! Everything was fresh and extremely tasty + a nice selection of Japanese beers that my partner loved!
The service was spot on the girls serving our table couldn't do enough for us, we couldn't finish all of our sushi so they took it away and put it in takeaway containers also giving us each sauce/ chopsticks and extra ginger to take home with us ( perfect for a midnight snack!).
Serving sizes were great! I wouldn't go here and order a bento box I suggest trying something inquire on the menu all the sushi dishes were completely different to what I have ever tried in the past. Will be a regular hot spot for us :)
Very nice Japanese food here. Takoyaki was fantastic, chicken bento box was delicious and the soft shell crab beautiful. The salads especially had some great flavours. Service was great also. We will be back.
Pretty decent Japanese food in the suburbs! Our family shared 2 bentos, the salmon & avocado roll and the takoyaki balls and left with our bellies full and humming. They had a booster ready for our toddler + kid-sized bowl & cutlery. Service was attentive and not intrusive :) Good experience, will probably return (will frequent more often if the price was just a tiny bit cheaper, it gets expensive to take a family of four out to eat nowadays!)

This is hands down one of the best Japanese restaurants I've ever been too! We had three salmon dishes and they were amazing! Everything tasted fresh and made to order also the ratio was so on point! Service was also amazing, they were so welcoming and always there when needed. Hidden gem in Maribyrnong! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Stumble on this little gem a few weeks back. Although the deco feels a little chaotic, the atmosphere was still warm and welcoming. Our standout dish was definitely the tuna bomb - highly recommend this dish if you love spicy food. The most average for us was sadly the sashimi, they were a little chewy.
We also noticed that the bar took up most of the small space and was rarely if not, not even used. Would love to see this transform into a more functional space such as a sashimi bar (means they have to lift their game with the quality here) and or a yakitori bar. Would be a total hit for the casual diners. Really want to support our local businesses so would love to see this one prosper!
Overall, Staffs were helpful and friendly which makes the experience lovely. We would come back again :)
I definitely recommend trying this restaurant. Visited here last night with my girlfriend, and we were definitely impressed with certain dishes. My favourite was the takoyaki. It was delicious, and you could tell it was made and served fresh. My partner loved the prawn gyoza. We also had the Shinmai roll and spider roll dishes. Those were nice, but I feel were nothing special. Instead we just ordered more takoyaki. The food was great, but still found it hard to justify the price for the quality of food when the bill came in. I'm fairly easy to please, but I felt that it was a bit more on the pricey side, compared to japanese cuisine we could eat elsewhere that's just as good. Otherwise, I would recommend for everyone to try it!
I had lunch here with my mum and it was great. The food had a really authentic Japanese taste as it was not overly salty or fatty food that left me feeling very healthy and satisfied. The food was prepared with attention to detail, I had an unagi bento box and the ingredients were very fresh. I particularly enjoyed the creme brulee green tea dessert, definitely worth a visit.
Great little Japanese place that serves good food! The service was great and the food tasted fresh and was delicious. Would definitely come back again as it is a great place locally that offers quality Japanese food.

Maribyrnong is hot property right now, with new establishments popping up left, right and center. Shinmai Tasty opened just shy of 3 months ago and has already warmed the hearts of the locals with their tasty Japanese offerings (myself included!). Located on Edgewater Boulevard, Shinmai Tasty joins the slew of new eateries that are bursting onto the scene in the West. You have Ebi for your bento cravings and Soko when you’re missing ramen and Shinmai Tasty can fill in the void of anything in between.
My partner and I dined here for the first time last night and were blown away by the food, and staff! We ordered almost all of the starters to share and a mixture of the desserts! The service was impeccable! Their knowledge and compassion for the food and sake they were serving was promising and never disappointed! We will happily done again... And AGAIN!! Worth the drive over this side of town for some good, traditional Japanese food! Yum!!!

What a great little place. Lovely staff, clean and with great character. Food presentation was fantastic and flavours divine. We shared a few entrees and had a couple of mains. All were exquisite. The desserts are a must try!!Would recommend and will definitely go back. Great to have a Japanese place with character in the west 😊🙏
It's nice to see a new establishment pop up around the Maribyrnong area, more food options to choose from. Gave this place a go for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food as I'm a bit skeptical of Japanese food in the burbs. I tried the Shinmai Roll which was well presented and had good quality ingredients. It tasted nice though a bit pricey given the size and portion. Had room for dessert so I tried the green tea brulee and it tasted amazing, highly recommend it.
Food just amazing. As a new restaurant just hope the consistency of the quality and taste stay the same with all dishes. Especially their top / signature dishes.
Food was great. Especially the seared salmon. Think I could have eaten 15 plates of just that.

Have just had the most exquisite Japanese meal at this new little restaurant in Edgewater at Maribyrnong. We sampled many of the items on the menu among which were a lovely taster of fresh sashimi cleverly served on a leaf over ice. The wagyu beef starter was melt in your mouth with a beautiful sauce. Do not leave without trying the eggplant chips which were delicious as was the soft shell crab and the plate of mixed tempura. The prawn gyoza were light and delicious with a tasty sesame sauce. We had a mixed berry mocktail which was both refreshing and delicious.
The service was friendly, attentive and informative. There is a warmth emanating from this little restaurant which exudes professionalism. Well worth visiting and excellent value for money.
The growth of businesses at Edgewater has finally arrived. A new addition to this complex is Shinmai Tasty. Warm, welcoming, informative and accommodating service.
We showed up with no booking and they were happy to accommodate despite being booked out. Every order that came out, the staff politely explained how to eat it with the accompanying sauces. This beats those odd moments when you awarkardly steal a glimpse of neighbouring tables on how to properly eat some dishes...I've had those moments.
We had the tempura platter for entree and it is the best Japanese crumbs I've ever had. Definitely try this if you decide to make it here. For mains were beef and chicken teriyaki bentonite boxes. These were nicely served by the waiter. Drink was a mango mock tail..... very yum. Stand outs was the mock tail and entree.
Fit out of the restaurant is very nice for Edgewater, definitely raising the stakes.
The food here is amazing. Have been twice now. So far the menu is big enough, which is excellent for a small place, to be wide and varied, with a great many choices. I'm choosing to work my way through the menu. Thankfully I have quite a way to go. We found this lovely place the day after we returned from a most enjoyable trip to Japan and so were happily surprised by the variety and quality of the menu items here.
If I have any criticism, it would be that sometimes an order seems to get lost in translation. An oversight that I'm sure will be rectified with time. Generally the service is warm and friendly and only impaired slightly by the one haphazard moment of a missing item ordered.

I would give this place 3.5 but there's no inbetween.
One of the staff started off with "would you like still or sparkling water?". Now don't get me wrong, more than happy to pay for sparkling, but don't be so deceptive as to though it's an offering. We were charged for a bottle of sparkling.
We ordered pork dumplings, salmon and avocado sushi with two main dishes - wow chicken katsudon and the lamb chop.
They mistakenly gave us vegie dumplings and took it back. Which was okay, we were more than happy to wait a little longer as one staff was extremely cheerful and friendly.
The highlight of the night would be the sushi, it was friend with the right amount of rice and ginger on the side. It felt light and we definitely do regret not ordering more.
The main dishes were quite a let down. It's something we could've cooked up at home but was charged a premium price here. Hanaichi would've done a better job. Fair to say we weren't satisfied with the outcome of the dishes and made us regret not getting the sushi even more.
The dessert kind of flipped the night over and ended it really well. We were happy with both the Green Tea Brulee as well as the Tokyo Mix Ice Cream. The flavour was there, it was rich and melted right in your mouth.
What you see came to a total of $100.05. Quite dear for a two person dinner, but you're also paying for the experience. The interior of the restaurant was beautiful and if you're lucky , you'll get a bubbly staff.
I hope the consistency of not only the food but the cheerfulness of the staffs are better in the future.
I would revisit for a special occassion, but don't get tricked by the offering of sparkling water unless you're ready to pay.

I must admit that tonight's experience and atmosphere was really nice. Service was flawless with great attention to detail. The food was tasty, we got Ramen Duck and a a King Fish dish. The ramen was incredible, one of the best I've tried. Drinks were nice as well, a good variety of sakes and japanese whiskies. The berries and mint mocktail was refresing and so rich in flavour. The price was definitely reasonable to what we got. A really nice option to have dinner in Maribyrnong.
Expanded their restaurant space with some great murals. The food is pretty good. Had duck ramen, soup lacked a little bit of flavour but was okay. Friendly and efficient service. Might go back again.
Customer Service was very welcoming and attentive. The food was AMAZING. First time visiting and definitely not the last. We enjoyed every item we ordered. We had the Wow Chicken Katsudon, Tempura sushi and Dumplings - loved every bite. Good value for money, i recommend you visit this hidden gem and it won't disappoint.
