We used to go here a lot about 5 years ago and it was very good back then. So on a return last night for takeaway would it live up to the memories? Well, not quite.
It's not the most attractive place and on a busy stretch of Oaklands Rd it can be a trick to get a park. Inside it's, well, cosy might be a good way of saying it.
Ordered the usual suspects: butter chicken, lamb rogan Josh, samosas, pakoras, naans, rice plus a "mixed grill" made up of fish, prawns, kebabs, and so on.
$60 and change all up.
I was told it would be "20 minutes". I had time to drive up to the Supermarket on Marion Rd, find a park, do a bit if shopping, drive back to the restaurant and still had a good twenty minute wait before it was ready. From my experience and from other comments on here I think any wait times they tell you might be more hopeful fantasy than definite reality.
The food was good. Not great, but still good. There was plenty of flavours and the curries were rich and thick.
There were some niggles. The Naans came in a sealed paper bag and were limp and a bit soggy by the time we got them. The mixed grill came with a fish tikka that, surprisingly, was still raw in the middle. In fact the mixed grill came coated in so much bright red curry paste that it was a bit hard to taste anything else
But one thing was very odd. When I was ordering I tried to order some papadams and was told "No need to! We'll include complimentary papadams." which I thought was very generous. When I got home there was a plastic bag with two papadams inside, which, as compliments go is fairly faint praise.
Here's the thing. Just a few minutes drive from our house is the fabulous Hub Tandoori Nepalese restaurant. Would I drive past the Hub to get to Delhi Spice? Well no. And that's the thing.
Service is great. Food is amazing. Have been a few times before. Took Mum this time who was visiting from QLD who can be quite picky. Mum loved it.
Don't listen to the pish-posh poo-pooing by others about this place. Most things get better with age. When this place opened 6/7 years ago it was renowned to go over the 30-40min wait recommended for pick up, but seemed to worth it because we were super satisfied with huge tick of approval. But in the last couple of years they picked up their game and you will have your order ready pronto when in the time recommended. I hate take-away, but the one restaurant I do order from when I do, is Dehli Spice =)
Flavour-wise, if you're looking for a quintessential Ra-on-the-Taj or Jasmin standard, you are looking in the wrong place. This business caters for all us plebeians - it's got rich flavour, and each dish goes a long way. Some dishes are watery (dahl) some aren't (meat curries), but duh that's the dish, and who tf cares - when it's so satisfying and at a great price? If you want super heat in your hot curries and not getting it, get them to add extra chilli (I add chilli to everything so no curry house can please me or my husband there sorry dudes!).
Have tried other Indian restaurants that have popped up in the area and just gave up based on over salty, over oily, over gristley, or not enough flavour. This business is my only family go-to favourite =)
4 of us ordered 4 curries to share, naan each and 2 large rice, and less than 20 bucks each? This is not a joke! Fantastic food on a cloudy autumn day! Will be back
Not the flashiest looking Indian restaurant but a great range of yummy curries and naans at a good price. The place is always pretty busy as it's a pretty popular takeaway spot but the service is quite reasonable. My go to dish is the chicken palak!
Great curry, good prices and friendly service. My regular takeaway spot, always very busy but orders are ready quickly- often in under the quoted time. The open kitchen shows many pots and pans simmering away and a traditional clay tandoor sits next to the stove ready for kebabs and breads. I think that their meat curries are better than the vego ones, lamb rogan josh has been the best trialled so far. Looks a bit dated from the outside but don't let that put you off, this restaurant is a must try for curry lovers.
Pretty tasty curries for reasonable prices. We had two garlic Nans, one rice a lamb korma and a chicken curry. The curries were nice without being overly fragrant or spicy. However, the meat was falling apart which was nice. We fed four for just over 30 dollars which is rare when we get take out. I thought for a fairly cheap suburban outlet they were pretty good.
I'll probably go back again.

Pretty good food. Lamb rogan josh yum and Dahl yum. Bit worried about cleanliness of cooking area but haven't been poisoned so far and have eaten in and eaten out many times
I love hidden gems and this Indian is a great little find! The decor is not too flash but they make up for it in the taste of their curries and also the price is pretty good for what you get. I love the cheese naan here and always order at least two for myself. I have never had a bad meal here and continue to use this venue when I need to feed the curry craving monster inside. Give yourself a Indian treat with either a takeaway or sit down and eat it even fresher!
Cant beat it anywhere in adelaide. Best tasting, best value. Never dined in, always takeaway. They've never once got our order wrong. Sometimes youve got to ring a few times to get through cause they are so busy. Longest they've told us is 45 mins but its always ready and hot when we collect it.
Best indian food ever. The best melt in your mouth lamb vindaloo (it's very spicy, just how I like it). Perfectly soft and crisp garlic naan. Fast service, very friendly staff. I'll be back again and again!
I work just down oaklands road and I had driven past this quirky little Indian restaurant many times, noticing how many cars would be parked out the front!!! And so I ordered some take-away for the first time tonight.....delicious, it is as everyone is saying. Possibly the best in adelaide, taste, quality and value. I will definatley be going back for seconds!
Lamb raan. Not just lamb raan but chicken tikka madras nan breads ...the Indian food is prob the closest to the best in Adelaide for Indian ...small n busy all the time ....
Butter chicken and cheese naan. Loved the food! went after reading the reviews below. definitely recommend it!. Went with a friend and ordered the large rice and one serve of the butter chicken and 2 cheese nans. Was surprised at how busy it was and how quick we got our food. We were seated and food came in 10 minutes despite the bustle of families coming in for take away. The cheese nan wasnt cooked enough however the moment i mentioned it to one of the waitresses she was more then happy to fix it and bring me a new and delicious one!.
I'm not a spicy fan, and dont eat Indian alot, but loved this place!
Outstanding food. A great addition to the neighborhood. The quality of the indian cuisine in this little shop would rival the best in Adelaide..
Good golly josh. Was told about this place 12 months ago, and finally got there. Talk about busy....great flavours, good value for money. A house lamb dish was a bit heavy on spice content (not chilli just dense in spices), we had lots of dishes remainder very good.
A great local curry, good flavours and well cooked meats. Good sizes portions and well priced dishes. If you live around here your in luck. I travel from the southern suburbs to get a curry from here. Best around.
One of the best around. I have been at least 20 times and never been disappointed . It does get very busy so order your take away an hour before you want it! Try the onion Bhaji and lamb Mysore, delicious.
Great food. Got take away last night. The guys were friendly and helpful even tho is was really busy. The chicken tikka and samosa was some of the best I've had around Adelaide. The rest of the meal was just as good. Will be one of our favourites down this way and we will be back!!
One of those suburban secrets. Only discovered this place a couple of months ago and have been back 4 times now because the food is absolutely delicious. We have only been for lunch and the food has been fantastic every time, the serves are a decent size and the prices are VERY good. No problems with delays at lunch time, there's only ever one or two other tables and afew take outs (but they take lots of phone calls for dinner bookings). Have to say that the lamb palak is a true star! Darkly rich and unctuous. The beef vindaloo is also very tasty (maybe it could be hotter?). The naan is just right - both crispy and soft. Cant wait to go back and try the leg of lamb, the biryanis and sooo much more!!
Always enjoyed the food except for 1 Monday night. The usual chef must've had a night off.. Saying that I will definetly be back.
We love Delhi Spice... It's become our preferred Indian in all of Adelaide. The food is truly authentic, the price is great and the staff are all lovely. Couldn't recommend it enough!
My local! I absolutely live this little restaurant, food is sensational and great value. Staff are lovely and location is perfect.
Dehli Spice Delhilicious. Here is an absolute hidden treasure, tucked away on Oaklands Road opposite the Marion swimming centre is the Delhi Spice, full of character, charm and atmosphere.
The service here is great and feels like you are being served by friends. The food was absolutely brilliant. Entree's of Samosa's and the like were just nicely cooked and the Vindaloo and Rogan Josh were out of this world. The Rogan Josh just fell apart and melted in your mouth.
The prices are excellent, BYO wine with no corkage at all was just sensational value. We had a truly wonderful dining experience with wonderful friends and gracious hosts.
Lamb Ran. This has to be a "Bucket List" dish! It feeds 3/4 as a main with sides and is unbelievable value, the place might not look like a restaurant but after the first fork of yummy goodness the decor fades and the flavours take over
Cheap and Super-Cheerful!. WARNING: The Chicken Tikka Masala is addictive! Amazing food, great prices, and friendly staff- What more does it need??? Some days it may take a little while for your order to be ready (take away or eat in) but all is forgiven when the food comes out. If you're rushing, order early. It only takes so long because everyone else loves the food there as much as you will!
Great food. Samosas- excellent. Beef vindaloo- excellent. Lamb vindaloo- excellent. Friendly service. Good, well priced wine. Go there. Eat too much. Enjoy. Cheers

Great Goat Curry. All their creations that we have tried so far have been great. We especially like the flavour of their goat curry and butter chicken.
I'm off to pick up some more now.
Yum!
Great great food very tasty cheap it's like $9 for a meal you gotta try cheese naan best ever great friendly staff highly recommend
When you decide to dine-in, get ready for some good and meaningful conversation. The proper food they serve needs some time for preparation. As they say on their flyer, the food is about socialising. Go ahead and try some of the entrees.
