Review Chalk Espresso Bar - Maroubra

Priska Refitantiara
Went here for lunch. The service was okay, not the best but just average maybe because it's almost closed. Ordered flat white and it was really good. The mixed berry smoothie was so so, could barely taste the berry. The fish and chips were the winners though! Nice dipping sauce, crunchy, and rich of flavors! Also the poke bowl was yummy. The salted caramel cookies are also worth trying!

I hate writing bad reviews but I have no idea why this place is so well rated. Was briefly acknowledged and then given a menu about 5 minutes afterwards. I was then left waiting literally 20 minutes before even having my order taken. Waitress said it was insanely busy even though there were only three other occupied tables inside and outside and one takeaway coffee customer the whole time I waited. One table that got there after I did had their order taken immediately and got their food well before I did which I thought was cool. This was late morning on a weekday, the place was just about empty. I'd hate to see what it's like when it's packed. I honestly think they wanted me to just leave, but I patiently waited. Finally had my order taken after 25 minutes then waited a while longer for some rock solid poached eggs which I could've cooked better for myself at home in a quarter of the time. I could not be bothered winging about it as I'd already wasted enough time there and I was in a rush at that point. All up I paid over $30 for the worst service and some of the worst food I've ever experienced while eating out. Credit where credit is due, coffee was slightly above average.

Nice place for a quick visit. The customer service not very enthusiastic but, the food was quite good, even though I didn’t like the bread, I appreciate the quantity. Average price, nice and familiar atmosphere. You can park right there, and it’s close to the beach. If you’re in the area and want a fast breakfast (didn’t waited longer than 5 to 8 mins) I suggest this place. You can sit outside, but there’s plenty of tables inside as well, if you need a more “intimate” solution.

Great corn fritters and ethically sourced coffee.

Great cafe with good food and coffee. All the usuall breakfast options are here with a selection of cakes and brownies etc. The are dog friendly tables outside, and usually a free table in winter but it does get busy when the beach is packed. Yet to try the dinner options.

The food and the coffee were excellent. I loved the coffee. We had a bacon & egg roll and a classic breakfast. I loved the mushrooms and tomato. Neither my husband or I liked the sausages. The roll was great. Top notch customer service. The waiter was amazing brought waters before we ordered coffee. Then came back to get our food ordered. Service was fast. Cleared our plates quickly and asked if we wanted anything else. There were others tables and he was juggling looking after a baby in a pram. Nothing seemed an effort for this waiter. Amazing experience.

Great Coffee, friendly service & great food. Their homemade Hollandaise is fantastic!!! Corn fritters are so good & you can’t got wrong with the massive Vege Breakfast.

I always love coming down to chalk on a lazy day for a coffee or brunch with family and loved ones, the atmosphere is light but cheerful calm at the outdoor seats under the sun but if you wanted something more moody, intimate, or just wanted to sit outside the sun or the wind; the inside seats are definitelty comfy too. Although the prices may intimidate you at first glance, you pay for what you get and chalk is definitely my number 1 choice for brunch amongst cafes in the southern half of eastern suburbs. The staff are all very easygoing and friendly and the experience of starting off your day with coffee and brunch at the chalk is simply splendid.

Giving Chalk a "poor" rating today. We usually love Chalk but not today. We arrived at 6.50am and were offered coffees - which we ordered. At 7.00am we asked if we could order some breakfast (the menu states breakfast starts at 7.00am). The waiter told us the chef hadn't arrived and would probably be another twenty minutes or so and hence we could not. We then had to quickly drink our coffees and go in search of somewhere we could order food. Had the waiter asked if we wanted breakfast when we sat down at 6.50am and he took our drinks orders we would have left then and got our coffees with our breakfast somewhere else. It was a bit annoying to have to scoff their beautiful coffee and then eat breakfast without coffee.

Best cafe in Maroubra hands down! Friendly, welcoming staff; great coffee; chilled surroundings and delicious food 🖒 my favourite weekend treat! Thanks Chalk! Xx

Very much liked our lunch today. Ordered the B&E roll, pulled pork burger and tuna wrap. A bit pricey, but staff is very friendly and great service. Coffee was good too.

Had the sweet corn fritter here at Chalk Espresso. Flavour was nice but I think the fritter needed more hold to it as it fell apart too easily. The poached egg was also half cooked.

If you'd like to read more of my reviews, please check out my Zomato page and visit @cynthiaeats_ on Instagram for more photos!

Great cafe with helpful and friendly service. Such a cute place with a funky decor and good food. Had the guacamole toast with feta and a poached egg, so delicious 😋 good size and reasonable in price. The coffee was awesome too, so definitely worth visiting.

This place is good. Had guac with chimichurri, poached egg and feta. The flavours were awesome and I would 100% go back and get this again.

Hubs had bacon & egg roll and said was quite tasty with a decent portion of bacon. Two people for brkkie including 2 coffees for $27 makes this the best value brekkie I've had in a while!

The only thing that turned me off and cost this place 1.5 points was that they used empty gin bottles as water jugs and there was a kinda funky taste off the (warm) water as a result.

Asked the server what he would recommend and he suggested the corn fritters. I'd never had corn fritters before, but these were wonderful. Kind of like pancakes. Avocado, bacon, tomatoes, and a poached egg to top it off!
Insta: @voraciousventures

Amazing coffee, no extra charge for soy or almond milk. Revolutionary! Always lovely service, great vibe, a spot to go to in the evening as well. Love their funky interior. Spot on!

gday. an absolute bohemithing of my tastebudes overall as the meal was another creamworthy experience. not sure if there was a little bit of banter but I overheard some interesting language between staff which was quite hilarious, wouldn't you say so. I was on the verge of leaving a $1000000 tip up until I received my iced Bohemian which was supposed to be an iced chocolate. I just feel this experience could have been a whole lot more of a delicious cream if the minor malfunctions in the junction were avoided.
Salutations
Salutations. Myself and a companion ordered the French Toast with fresh strawberries, canadian bacon and maple syrup with vanilla ice-cream. The decor of the location was unique and stylised, making for a pleasurable experience. Seating was a tad abnormal and non-sensical, clear the units running the store had tried a bit too hard. Service was nice, but a tad sloppy in certain regions, most notably knowledge of the menu. Simply blows my mind. The Toast itself was okay, however the bacon was overcooked and the ice-cream melted, meaning the meal itself was subpar at best. Also a note, whilst seated waiting for our "aliments" as the french would say, we saw the man in charge and barista treating his employees with blatant disrespect and stupidity. The bloke was a real pain, and made the experience a tad awkward, wouldn't you say so. Yelling at a co-worker and a subpar meal with average service doesn't have me tempted to return. Both myself and my friend also had food spilled on us, with no real signs of remorse. What an absolute shame, not good to see and lowered my excitement for the future of the Bra.

Fantastic cafe, coffee was the ducks nuts,
And the food was amazing,10 outta 10,
Pat on the back for the chef well done keep up the good work.

Stopped into this cool looking cafe in the Bra on the way to work. I was looking for a coffee and a quick bite to eat. The staff were chillaxed and friendly. For my feed I went with the BLT, which was a decent sambo. It came on a toasted turkish bread, with crisp bacon, tomato and ranch sauce. They make a good coffee using Di Bella coffee.
Their coffee is excellent and tea as well. Especially they do not have extra charges for soy or almond milk. This is very helpful for those who are sensitive to lactose. Also they have gluten free bread on top of the delicious meal ! This is absolutely unusual !! Great service and great attitude towards customers !!

The best place to pop up at Maroubra Beach for a long time. Great coffee and breakfast , awesome staff with a relaxed beachside vibe.

You should also try two of their themed nights. Nepalese curry night on Thursday's and Mexican Taco night Friday's!

With the best craft beer and wine list around town also , you just can't go wrong at Chalk.

Nice environment, nice location, nice food but poor services. I have been there to take away coffee few times the staffs were not very friendly. I didn't care because I was there to take away coffee only. Maybe they had a bad day or busy day, they just can't be asked to serve people. Lately I went there for brunch, it wasn't busy at all but I got the same poor service from them. Quite disappointed because the prices of food are not cheap, they should be nicer to their customers. Anyway, food and coffee were nice. They just need to improve their customer service.

My favourite cafe in Maroubra. Excellent food and coffee and as a barista I'm impressed that the machine is all manual (as it should be). For those who are determined to ruin great coffee with decaf, soy, vanilla syrup ect , Chalk has a generous no-charge policy for all of your ridiculous add-ons. Lovely Mexican decor and service, will continue to be a favourite!

Came for breakfast, menu and food is great but seating is so uncomfortable. If you're going to have coffee, no issues but for a meal, I'd rethink it. Probably won't go back for a sit down meal there again. Great staff and food though!

Came here with a friend on a hot weekday. We loved the wall designs, but found the seats a bit too high. My friend had eggs benedict with bacon and I had poached eggs on toast with chorizo. Food and juice was nice, and staff was very friendly.

I've been to chalk a couple of times for coffee but decided to drop in for dinner on a Thursday night. We had the bruschetta with ricotta cheese, mushrooms and spinach, the creamy chicken pesto penne and the seafood marinara. Really enjoyed the bruschetta as the ricotta was a unique addition to the standard bruschettas. Chicken pesto penne also really hit the spot on a cold rainy night. It was warm, creamy and comforting. The marinara unfortunately was a bit disappointing. The seafood itself was well cooked but the pasta was slightly overdone and there was a hint of spice that just overpowered the dish with a peppery taste.

Staff are very lovely and attentive. 5 stars for service. Decor is quite unique here with Mexican themes and a really inviting couch but if you are going to have dinner rather than just a coffee here, sit outside. The seating arrangements are quite uncomfortable. The benches against the wall are elevated so you have to bend down to eat. Hoping to see minor improvements and more menu options that would make this a nice local pasta place.

Had a morning coffee and egg/bacon roll here. Atmosphere was pretty vibrant and the staff are pleasant. The coffee was pretty good however the bacon in the roll was a bit like jerky unfortunately

I love this place and they have great food, coffee and service. However, DONT get the Banana Smoothie. I have had it twice and it doesn't taste like banana at all, just a bit of yoghurt and milk.

Great service. The Chalk is a the best place to eat at maroubra beach. Delicious food, great coffee and teas and amazing service. Everyone is very friendly. It's always pleasure to go there.

Great coffee. Coffee in this place is great and the pastry tops ! I know tapas are small portions but this was so small a bit expensive for a typical suburban cafe. Nice ambience! Will be back.

Simply great coffee and atmosphere

Chalk Cafe Maroubra. Be careful of what you eat there!! No proper cool room food is left out overnight.

I tried - THRICE!. I really really wanted to like this place. First visit they forgot my coffee order, second visit they gave me sugar when i said i wanted none and the final insult was my third visit when they gave me a the wrong coffee.

Im out guys...

Best coffee in the area for sure. Possibly even Sydney. The food is great and the staff are always friendly.
Easy to enjoy when your at Sydney's best beach.

Ok, the coffee is great, the staff are great, the food is great, but the environment in which to eat is not. The seating is incredibly uncomfortable and not equipped for eating a meal while sitting down. Literally mechanically awkward to eat due to poor set up. For that reason I won't go back, which is a shame. Hopefully the design will improve.

Great coffee, best bacon egg role I've ever had. Mmmmmm

There are a few cafés in Maroubra beach but Chalk is the first to actually understand the meaning of a comfortable beachside cafe. The other small cafés in town have a pretentious air about them, but not Chalk! Chalk is an artistic cafe (complete with chalkboard walls and incredible artwork), fair prices, delicious coffee tasty food, and comfortable indoor seating. Now all it needs is comfortable outdoor seating in the sun and oregano bakery scrolls and I would pretty much live there. Oh, and did I mention the free wifi?! Excellent local cafe!
