Matinee is a jazzed up cafe and i liked it very much. When we first walked in around 9am we stopped at the 'please wait to be seated' sign and were quickly greeted by wait staff who told us to pick wherever we wanted to sit. There were plenty of seats to choose from so we picked one and the waiter quickly came and poured us some water but it was sparkling and my partner and i don't like sparkling water so we would have preferred if they asked wether we wanted tap or sparkling but we weren't too fussed. Quickly after they asked if we wanted drinks when we hadnt had a chnce to look at the menu so we told them give us a few minutes. surely another minute later they asked if we wanted to order we still werent sure as we hadn't gotten through the drink menu let alone looked at the full menu but ordered what we had seen (the popcorn milkshake and a coffee) and told them to come back in a few minutes so we could order food. again we were not even mid menu but ordered anyways. I got the butter scotch waffles and my partner ordered the french toast w a side of bacon. The waffles was one large waffle(the types you get from chocolate cafes) topped with a half a banana a scoop of icecream and peices of honeycomb topped with butterscotch sauce. It was amazing but incredibly filling. i got through maybe half the meal and boy did i try. My partner ordered the french toast and he didnt love it but he didnt hate it. Whilst the menu says no substitutions they were happy to alter the order when we asked. The bacon on the other hand was quite thick and not to my partners taste so i had a bit and it was quite nice but nothing like bacon. Much prefer thin bacon but it was a interesting alterntive to the norm. He couldnt finish his meal either as it was quite large too. the milkshake was AMAZING but the coffee not so much. would go back myself but i dont think my husband would be as eager. Very Instagrammable meals and the pastrys look very nice. Good setup.
Sat lunch. Good service. Food was quick and presented insta worthy. Taste great. Ordered butter milk chicken added bacon. The chicken crispness was awesome but overshadowed the chips. The pork consoulet was a 10:1 ratio of beans to pork. Needs more pork for a 20 bucks dish. Overall still satisfying. Will come back for sure. Ambience is sorta American diner open doors, hardly noisy. Coffee wasn't for me but I wil try their cocktails next time
Meatball sub and reuban sandwich tasted great! Coffee tastes amazing too. Would definitely go back to try other stuff on the menu. Overall a great vibe and would really recommend trying!
Chocolate shakePricey corner cafe with interesting concoctions (unfortunately looks better than taste), good ambience and service. . Hi Friends!Foodie or not, you're more than welcome to stay and browse my food adventures!
First time visit today and it was worth the wait. The coffee was really good, as were my waffles. I had major fomo of hubs breakfast burger, so I will definitely return. Love the fit-out, and the staff were so hospitable and easy going.
First visit to Matinee today and I was certainly very impressed. Venue had plenty of space around you so you didn't feel over crowded. and you could have a conversation without sharing that of the table next to you. Coffee was great .Every staff member had a genuine big smile. Prompt service. Table cleared quickly. Water topped up regularly without being intrusive. Three of us enjoyed our meals and real value and taste for money. Met Charles, the owner, and can see his friendly manner is reflected in his staff. Will be sure to return and recommend to others. Top venue all round.
Matinee is a quiant cafe in Marrickville that is reminiscent of old school milk bars. The place is very retro and art-deco with its sky blue floors, orange tiled table top, wood and marble bar curve, wall paintings and stunning red tassel chandelier. The service is friendly and puts you right at ease. The food we had for brunch was all very wholesome! Each dish seemed to boast its own array of vegetables which was both healthy and so delicious. The pork cassoulet I ordered was a huge portion and so tender and delicious! My friends other dishes of the felafel, chicken salad, and daily special fritters were also amazing!
Great coffee! Was here on the first week of opening to try the food. And went back the second time last week. The first time the service was very slow and few things were not available on the menu. The food was good though so we went back again last week. Same friendly service and good coffee. Would be willing to visit again sometime soon.
Announced in Good Food Australia’s top 20 cafes in Sydney for 2018, so you know it’s going to be good. Enjoyed a delicious brunch at Matinee and tried the Pork Cassoulet, Reuben and falafel salad. Absolutely loved the pork cassoulet, so warm and hearty, perfect for winter. The poached eggs were cooked beautifully. Reuben was tasty but was a bit messy to eat so expect your hands to need a good wipe afterwards. Salad was light and a good option if you don’t feel like anything heavy or filling. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the place is buzzing all the time so expect a wait for a table. The wait was definitely worth it at the end. Will be coming back again!
We ordered the Persian rice, pork hash, popcorn chicken and cinnamon pretzel. The menu at Matinee is very playful and a little bit different from your average brunch, with very subtle middle eastern influences. The people were also nice enough to give us a free pretzel because it was the end of the day
A beautiful, open space with a mixture of style - chandelier lights, diner style chairs, high stools, individual tables & a large wooden communal table. However eclectic it is, it works. So I expected the food to be familiar but different. The breaky burger is delicious, filled with all the usual trimmings of quality. The chocolate brioche french toast was lovely & light and enjoyable. Not overly decadent or big. The special green brekkie bowl was generous, hearty & so satisfying. Grilled greens, sweet potato, quinoa, cranberries, crushed toasted almonds topped with a perfectly poached egg. Its yummy & guilt free. Coffee was made well & on Fridays they offer bottomless filter so you can get caffeinated to your hearts content. Friendly service although food can be a little slow. Definitely wanting to try the sweet pretzel next time.
Love the expansive, friendly atmosphere. The breakfast burger was delicious. A very nice place to hang out over great food and great coffee!
One of the new kids on the block, Charles is the owner and harks from Brewtown Newtown so you if you’ve been there you’ll be in for a treat here. A cool space with a shared table in the middle, there were plenty of diners grabbing their breakfast. It was quite a nice fit out and the staff were really nice. It’s a casual cafe which I’m sure he locals will grow to love.
We had the Pork Hash & Breakfast Burgers as well as a side of Herb Roasted Mushrooms. The pork was delightful with chunks of pork folded in with potatoes, cabbage, and capsicum. Topped with some perfectly poached eggs and parmesan, this dish definitely calls out to you to keep devouring each bite. The breakfast burger is a simpler affair with a hash brown, fried egg, and hollandaise with choice of bacon, salmon, or mushroom (bacon in our case) ensconced between a soft bun.
Coffee beans are roasted at the Collective Roasting Solutions. It was a solid coffee to get you going.
The desserts are made in house and cabinets were overflowing with a wide range. We tried the Brownie Cookie was yummy and filled with a coffee cream. The Cinnamon Pretzel could’ve done with a bit of warming up as slightly dense.
Overall you should check this newish addition to the neighbourhood!

Stopped by this new cafe recently, and the coffee is pretty good. I think the vibe of this cafe suits the area perfectly with a little grunge and old school newtown feel to it! The Pork Hash was just delicious, you can tell the food is wholesome yet fresh, and i loved the little chilli hit in the pork hash!Would definitely return if in the area, nice chilled environment if you need to get some work done over lunch.
Love the fitout, high ceiling and plenty of natural light matched with some down-to-earth friendly service. Arriving just after 3 meant the kitchen had already closed so I'll definitely have to return to try the menu. From the display of housemade goodies the generous slice of Dark Chocolate Cherry Vegan Cake ($7) was very yummy and managed to satisfy both my brother and I for an afternoon tea fix. If I wasn't told it was vegan I would have never of guessed it. Cappuccino ($4) was nice using a custom house blend by Collective Roasting Solutions which was supposed to reference the flavours of a Neapolitan ice-cream. This probably would have come down to suggestive thinking for my untuned palate. The Chai Masala will definitely be on my wishlist for next time as I'm always on the lookout for a good one in Sydney and that French Toast with chocolate hazelnut brioche and orange buttermilk ricotta is calling my name to enjoy its calories.
