Review Otoro Marrickville - Marrickville

Would give 5 stars if it wasn't for the raw tuna. Tasted completely off, I have to spat out immediately. However my partner accidentally ate it and had to eat wasabi and lots of ginger to stop the disgusting taste. You are serving raw food, it should be fresh otherwise the customer will get really sick from it. You better hope that we will not get sick from it. The rest taste quite nice, please be more careful next time.

Absolutely shocking and disappointing. Not authentic japanese food. Terrible food. I ordered the Tan Tan Ramen, the broth smelt so acidic and vomit like, that I could not continue eating it. Extremely disappointed. Karaage is below average, they dont crumb the chicken, it is just fried in a batter. Update: I now have food poisoning, suffering from abdominal cramps and chills etc less than 10mins after consuming the food. Never eating here again.

the service was swift. then came the food, the agedashi tofu was good. we also had sashimi salad, the salmon on it looks a little pale. then comes the sushi, all the rice in the sushi was overcook. it’s wet. the egg nigiri was soaked. this place failed big time. pretty disappointed but we were hungry. i hope our stomach survive.

Tried the Karaage chicken Bento. Chicken was cooked tempura style and was pretty bland, The rice was a bit gloopy as well. Even for $10.90, would not get again. Overall very average.

One of the worst experience I ever had at a restaurant. The sad thing is, this place used to have really amazing food. The original owner must have sold the business cause we don’t see him anymore. Decided to give it a chance and went to get some takeaway. Had a craving for some ramen, so I ordered one of the options. Imagine my surprise when I got home. They tried to pass off store bought instant noodles as ramen! They did not even bother cooking the noodles thoroughly cause I still see the familiar square-shaped cake of noodles that hasn’t quite unravelled from the shape. It is appalling and absolutely unacceptable. If I had wanted instant noodles, my own pimped-up version at home taste a hundred times better! Even the rest of the food, i ordered tasted really off. DO NOT GO THERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO WASTE YOUR MONEY FOR A GROSS EXPERIENCE

I will take into consideration reviewing ‘Otoro’ that this is a cheap and fast alternative Japanese restaurant & has ‘$’ displayed online. Pros: - Cheap (Bento Box in pic was about $10) - Quick and simple to order restaurant (took around 8/10minutes) - Nice cozy little sit in restaurant for Lunch or dinner Cons: - Cheap, below average food // don’t come here expecting the finest or best Japanese food - Food quality wasn’t the best but decent for a quick meal - Bento Box was filled with sauce and too much rice, the chicken to rice ratio was a bit off - Sushi also had a bad rice to chicken ratio Overall decent place! I suggest only come here to get quick and cheap Japanese meals All the best

The ramen was ok, curry looked like someone’s leftover, sushi was by far the worst ive had in my life. I’d be surprised if i didnt get sick tomorrow from the old fish and the rice isnt even sushi rice??

Otoro is a fine restaurant just like any other standard Japanese restaurant. The food is either okay or delicious. They do their best but I feel it's been hard lately due to covid and the country's financial situation.

I come here often for the lunch bento boxes, and recently tried their udon soup. The tempura udon soup was really good and I think it'll be my new favourite dish for the coming cold winter months.
Great little place. I had the bibimbap which was awesome, lots of fresh veges and just the right amount of chillu. Definately coming back here soon great find
Jenny
Consistently good. I always get a bento box because it's value for money and has everything I crave in one meal.

The service is really good. The waitress is very patient and very sweet. The chef on some occasions gives us grilled eel on the house and that taste amazing.

I ordered from here using Uber Eats. The delivery was fairly swift and delivery driver was nice.

I read a few of the reviews here and thought I'd chance it. I'll start with the highlight which was the Agedashi Tofu. It was nice and crisp with a delicious soy topping. Wish the same sauce was on the other dishes. The Teriyaki Chicken & Avocado Large Roll was okay but the rice was not flavoured very well. The chicken itself was okay but due to no seasoning it kind of felt disjointed. The Chicken Katsu Don tasted fine but again the rice was plain and had no flavour imparted into it. The chicken was again was cooked okay but the egg topping wasn't oozy like other ones I had and this one contained no onions for the usual sweetness I was after. It had a strange combination of cabbage, zucchini, and broccoli. Without the usual caramelised onions this was missing the flavour and moisture it so badly needed. Miso soup was decent.

I love this place :)
Friendly staff, fresh sushi and good place!
Of course the food is always beautiful, and big boss is so kind. I can't help loving here!
It is disappointing when you order a medium Sashimi home delivery, to receive only 2 types of fish, Salmon and Tuna, along with oysters, scallops and 2 sushi. I actually thought they made a mistake, but when I called the chef said no, the order was correct. Lucky for me I'm not allergic to shell fish. Or it would have been inedible. Worst attempt at sashimi I have experienced. Won't be buying from here again.

Tried order food from this place by foodora for the first time. Worst Japanese food EVER!!!! Me and my parent are not a fussy eater but we have never had such a bad Japanese food EVER! The karaage Chicken looked has no butter on it and they were tasteless. The soft crab salad was way too salty. The reman we ordered has no flavour but salty again! Last dish the eel sushi roll cannot be picked up by chopsticks coz they were too lose and 90℅ were rice! I do not recommend anyone to visit this place! Seriously!
Marion
Fantastic food, fresh and delicious. We find this food consistently good, one of the best Japanese in Sydney. Don't believe the negative reviews, do yourself a favour and try for yourself.

I don't know why some of yall complaining! If it's the waitresses that's the problem, I've realised they've changed the whole staff! That's how much I love and know this place. I always come here for lunch breaks and also come here for dinners with my family and the boss always gives my younger siblings free fruits and desserts and the sushi and udon we always get are always such a big serve for such cheap price. Everything is so cheap there for quality food! I definitely recommend!

Very dirty place, the service is terrible I couldn't even get a clean glass, we showed the dirty glass to the waiter she looked at it took it and "clean it" with the rug she was using to wipe tables. I almost walked out. Food was so so we ordered fresh sushi rolls but one of them came cold and dry from the fridge the other two had excessive amounts of Mayo and sauce not sure if they were trying to hide something with that. I'm never coming back.

Got a voucher from GruopOn , the all you can eat. It was the worse sushi ever. All they served was the simple rolls which 90% made from rice and seaweed. It doesn't look great as the promotion they present in GroupOn at all. Do not up your sale like this. Killing yourself! And the company which the restaurants deal with should strict with all deals they present.
Sally
We love this place, it is such a good local Japanese and they are so friendly.
Very good value. Best options are Bento boxes and the Don bowls.

Strange hidden restaurant. Came on a voucher "All you can eat" deal. Food of good quality fresh but unimaginative. The restaurant was not full but the waitress who took a while to acknowledge we had arrived insisted on finding out if we had made a booking before having us seated. The reservation was for four people yet the table had only 3 sets of cutlery and plate. The waitress took the vouchers and walked away without explaining the menu or what the voucher included. There were 3 Staff member working. The wait staff English was poor and we found it hard to communicate with them. On the table was 2 laminated menus with a list of sushis available. The menu included 3 groups of sushi from which had to choose. It took a while for us to figure out ourselves because there were no instruction and the waiter could not explain how it works. We were trying to order food but the waiter kept disallowing what we wanted. Kept say "over". Apparently you can only order in rounds. Each person can only order one item from the first or last group of sushi. Or A couple may order one single serve from the second group to share. Put it simply each person can only one serve or equivalent at a time. The second group of sushi is to be shared between 2 person each time. It does make sense. It is all you can eat and to make it fair to other customers wait time and easier for work load in the kitchen each person must finish one serve before ordering more. It is a tedious method of eating sushi. I'd rathet pay more and order off a menu or go to sushi train. We did try to order items off the menu to support their business. We had to ask the waiter for the regular menu but he bowed and went away and didnt come back. He may have misunderstood our request. We had to wave him back. The food eventually came then waiter asked us to choose our drinks which was included on the menu. We all chose tea. They served Japanese green tea with real tea leaves not tea bags which was nice however the pot was small and we had to ask fot refills. I find a lot of restaurants fail to be attentive to simple needs as water. Anyhow theres no big rush to go back. Next time if we go back it may be less tedious and enjoyable if we order off the menu. The agadeshi tofu we ordered off the menu was nice. The food was fresh. Price was ok. I thinks small business needs supporting and they do deserve a second chance.

Despite some of the negative reviews about this place, I found the service was quite good here, although I must admit trying to call up and make a booking here was bad as the line was engaged most of the time but in the later afternoon after 530pm I was able to get through and make a booking with the voucher. At least the girl seated us to the table and left us and it wasn't until maybe 15 mins we asked to order the sushi, which didn't take that long to be served. We did have to ask for the drinks and also some extra plates to eat the sushi. We try the larger sushi which we could order 2 plates of and got the spicy cooked tuna and katsu chicken followed by the California roll and chicken and avocado and prawn sushi but I found that the prawn sushi roll had more rice then actual prawns. All in all we were quite full after having 8 plates of sushi, it was a struggle to eat the last few but satisfying. I would eat here again I also guess going on a weekday it wasnt as busy as the weekend and didn't feel like they were rushing us to eat.

The ramen was delicious, and the waitress was very kind and polite. I liked the complementary orange at the end of my meal, was a nice surprise.

THE WORST JAPANESE RESTAURANT EVER!
Bought voucher from Scoopon $30 all you can eat sushi.
Got there and served with the rudest korean girl, we about to order drink and in the middle of ordering, she just left us.
then ordered more sushi with only one little sushi left on my plate and i was about to eat it, she yelled "FINISH YOUR SUSHI FIRST".
We were shocked got treated really bad. the sushi was 85% rice and 15% filling. its more like a rice buffet for us.
We weren't even full. we left because we can't stand with that korean waitress attitude towards us and that was the yuckiest sushi we ever had.
was cold from fridge, not fresh, full of sauce and full of rice.
Personally its very hard to find NOT nice sushi in Sydney, but Otoro nailed it!
$30 for two people? it was a waste of $30, i wouldn't want to eat there for free.
If i could give 0 for rating, i would!

AMAZING food, kind people and best prices in town!. This is a humble little restaurant that does the best Japanese in Sydney, trust me, I've searched long and hard and every single time I keep coming back to this one even though it's a fair distance for me to travel. I don't know where the bad reviews have come from but the staff are always so unbelievably nice and friendly to me, they are fast and affordable and their sashimi is second to none. I've tried more restaurants than I can count for the perfect sashimi and none of them have even come close to the Sashimi salad and Sashimi entrée that Otoro makes. Their food is done with flair and flavour, presented beautifully. 10/10 for taste, 10/10 for price and 10/10 for service. Can't recommend it more.

Bad customer service, bad food. I had an "all you can eat voucher'. I called to book and they said they were completely booked out for the whole day, so made a booking for the week after. On top of this, was spoken to very rudely on the phone when making a reservation.
When we came to eat, it took about 10 minutes to be given our first plate. The second dish was taken out of the take away cabinet out the front (the lady thought that I didn't see this) and was put on a plate with sauce. It was old and was not fresh at all. Even the other sushi plates that we ordered were supposedly made fresh, however they were hard and falling apart. Overall, pretty bad experience and wouldn't go back

Amazing food, great service one of my fav places to eat in Marrickville. One of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Sydney, especially the $50 set menu. Absolutely delicious, friendly staff and fresh fruit to finish your meal off. We are regulars.

Excellent Voucher. We ate here on a weeknight so it may be different for those that dine on busy weekends.

Great food
Wait staff were attentive
Excellent value for money.
We were full 45 minutes into the all you can eat period.

Thank you to the staff!
Jason.mckerron
Very enjoyable meal!. I recently ate here with my 2 teenage sons. We had vouchers for "eat-all-you-can". We ate and ate and ate. They just kept bringing out the delicious sushi plates. We bought our own Asahi beers BYO and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and went home very satisfied and full after 1hr and 15mins of a good assortment of sushi.
The voucher had only 2 conditions- We had as 90 min limit and we could only order 1 dish at a time per person and had to consume that dish before ordering again. We had no problems with these limits and had a very enjoyable meal.

Great Experience!. My boyfriend and I went here with a scoopon voucher, at first we were concerned by the strict rules associated with it such as having to finish your plate before ordering any more, one dish at a time etc etc. But we ended up leaving 45 minutes into our 90 minute all you can eat session because we were so full with the amazing food! Sushi was freshly prepared, tasted amazing, beautiful green tea and excellent customer service. We only had choice from the sushi menu, but the other food on their main menu also looked amazing! Also great value voucher for the amount and quality of food. Would love to go back and would recommend it to others.
P_kanisius
Misleading, Poor Customer Service. I bought a scoopon for a 90 minutes all you can eat sushi at this restaurant, Their all you can eat is not a true all you can eat session. You have to place an order for one dish per person, wait for them to prepare it and then once served, you have to finish them before you can place another order. The first order comes out within 8 minutes, the next one takes 10 minutes, the next order takes 12 minutes, the next one 15 minutes, the next one takes another 15 minutes. It just takes longer and longer for them to prepare the meal. Apparently this is their tactic to limit the "all you can eat" session. The fact that they are mentioning "all you can eat" is just misleading and frustrating. Shame on Japanese restaurants....

Next time try to go in group of 4 or 5, order 3 dishes to come out first, and then one dish after the 3 dishes comes out. you place an order for the remaining 2 dish. While waiting for the 3 dishes to come out prepare a list of dishes that you want to order one after another, make it as long/as much as you want, 50 or 100 dishes if necessary. Once the first 3 dishes arrived, you need to share one plate first, once you finish that you can finish the second plate, and so on, so one dish can be served continuously.

Ask to be seated close to the kitchen or the counter, the waitress hides behind the counter, trying not to be seen by you so that you cannot place an order quickly, and they also down the ordering process by collecting empty plates from your previous order, hence you better stack them before they arrive. Also they take other people order on the way back to the counter, maybe a good idea to go to the counter yourself with the order.

Food was awesome, customer service was lacking.. The overall experience was somewhat disappointing. The food was very delicious - I loved the tempura prawn sushi in particular. Though, the customer service wasn't very pleasant. The staff didn't appear very polite, especially at the time of booking. They were often shouting and talking over you, leading to frequent miscommunication and thus, frequent repeating of the same information. They didn't seem to understand what I was saying a lot of the time, and their shouting didn't help either.

On the day, we experienced very, very long wait times for food to come out. Some of our friends had to leave early as they had something else on. I'm not sure if this rule is adopted elsewhere, but they only allowed us to order other dishes after EVERYONE has finished their dishes. This is extremely unpleasant for groups where there are those who eat really quickly, and those who don't. This wasted valuable time that could've easily been avoided. The staff were not very approachable and didn't seem to smile at all.

There's also one major issue that they should have addressed as soon as it became a problem. They use barriers and parasols that constantly fell over creating unexpected bangs that is unpleasant, let along unsafe, as it could have easily injured customers or anyone passing by.

NEVER COMING BACK. WORSE CUSTOMER SERVICE. This place is absolutely disgusting in terms of service and food. Sushi was dry and unpleasant to eat. We ordered spicy tuna rolls and all it was: tuna roll with some whirls of chilly sauce on top. We love prawns and after a few orders the waitress said "sorry prawns are sold out today". WHAT SORT OF SUSHI RESTAURANT RUNS OUT OF PRAWNS??? It was only 8pm and the restaurant closes at 9.30.

The waitresses did not treat us with respect because we used the voucher. We came in a group of 6 and was asked to sit outside because it'd be too busy. The entire time we sat outside there were 3 tables occupied inside. We could not order until 6 dishes were all finished at the same time despite the advertisement says "Only 1 dish per person can be ordered at a time." Each round took 20 minutes for the food to come out and we finished our food within 2 minutes. THE WORSE PART WAS: on our last round we waited 30 minutes until I got so frustrated and went to the counter to inquire, the server said: "sorry you've finished your eating time 15 minutes ago". WHY DIDN'T YOU have the courtesy to come out and tell us? Were they going to make us sit until the store closes? Disrespectful, rude, stupid and unprofessional.

I will be talking to Consumer Fair Trading because this is unacceptable. We were just looking for a good night out wouldn't have minded paying a few extra bucks, but the lack of communication and disrespect we got from this place was unbelievable. Dissatisfaction is an understatement
Danieltancevski321
Very dissapointing. Was not satisfied at all with the service that was provided and the time it took to bring our food. I just can't imagine myself going back there. Ever.
Dj.pigsty
Worst experience. Terrible experience. Tried calling them to make a reservation, however the lady on the phone insisted that there were no more availabilities for the remainder of the weekend. I found this surprising, so I asked if I could just rock up and be served and the lady said yes. Contradiction much? Complete waste of time. To make matters worse, it seems that the restaurant has temporarily unplugged their telephone line... Way to make things less shady. Not a good experience and definitely would not recommend.

DO NOT GO HERE. Do not go here. Terrible service - even before I have arrived at the restaurant. Tried to make a booking for my scoopon but would not take my booking because they claim to be "fully booked". It expired in 2 days. Asked to book for the following day (the expiry date) and they said they "close on the last day of every month". What a conicedence. Then after 5 minutes I tried to call tme back, they left their phone off the hook. Very dodgy and unprofessional. Wouldn't you call this being ripped off as they basically tricked my money because they took my money before hand. WOULD NEVER GO HERE AND WILL NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO GO HERE. I will report them as this is not the first instance it has happened - some other reviews had said the same thing.
David Ji
This place is absolutely terrible. We not only waited 30minutes per roll of sushi but after the 2nd order the rice they used was hard and we suspected they used leftover rice from the day before. We were also seated under a broken lamp which attracted alot of bugs they flew into our food and drinks. Once we complained it took a further 20 minutes before we were moved to the table next to us.
Overall, a horrendous experience.

Good for it's price. My boyfriend & I went on a rainy weekday. I originally tried calling up the restaurant 3 times however noone answered on any of the three occasions (different times and days were called).

Rocked up to the restaurant anyway on a weekday and it was rainy - so it was super quiet. Originally the lady refused to let us eat however I was quite annoyed as I had tried calling, and it was simply not my fault that they didn't answer or organise their schedule better.

I was going overseas that weekend and the voucher would have expired by the time i was back. After sitting there for 10 minutes waiting for her to find another time on her reservation list, she said she would let us eat just on this one occasion.

You could only order 2 dishes at a time, and it wasn't really a "all you can eat" as she would only come and take your next order when she wanted to, rather when you were finished. So we basically sat there at 10 minute intervals after each meal before ordering the next, and waiting another 10 minutes for that to come.

We ordered probably 8 dishes at most, before she came over to us and said "last orders" at 8:30pm when they closed at 9pm.

Overall was unhappy with this - although it's cheap.. but using vouchers and slowwwwwwwly serving you will honestly just lead to damaging their business name & not having customers return.
Mjdjt54
Retstaurant. Had a voucher for this restaurant staff were not interested to take the booking. Would not buy a voucher from Our Deals again. Wouldn't return emails to find out the problem with this restaurant. Lost the meal and the money.

Great food. We used a voucher last night and really enjoyed the food and the service.

Food was fresh, generous proportions and really well presented.

Voucher deal was a bargain and regular menu quite reasonably priced

You will regret coming here!!!!
The mediocre food was not worth putting up with one of the worst service staff that I have ever dealt with. These people are blatantly after your money and nothing else. I called to make a reservation with my Scoopon and they told me there were completely booked out. Ten minutes later I tried booking with no voucher and they suddenly had a lot of availabilities. When we got to the place, they treated us really poorly and service was slow in general. Not just that, my friend also tried booking and they told her to come on the date when the vouher was expired and it would still be valid. Though it was naive of her to trust an establishment such as this, when she got there they did not accept her coupon. She was willing to recive the normal charges but they did not even allow of credit to be transferred from the voucher. So come here if you want to be lied to.

Nice little place. Was quite skeptical when I was invited to this newly opened restaurant for dinner and was pleasantly surprised. The sushi was nice with the chef paying a lot of detail to presentation, food was fresh and servings were big.
One of the few places which uses real wasabi which was a pleasant surprise.

Would recommend this place to everyone!
Billy
Don't buy a coupon from this restaurant they do not honour the coupon what a unbelievably bad customer service
Sim
This is the worst customer service. we bought a scoopon and the person did not fulfill this coupon even though we have paid in full price. have wasted 52dollars and ruined a birthday party. DO NOT COME TO THUS RESTURANT OR BUY A COUPON TO THIS PLACE . REPEAT DO NOT COME
Elleioo
Happy with the food. We went with our Scoopon voucher, very happy with the food we were served with! Good sushi, karage and agedashi tofu were yummy too!
Moodiefoodie
Just another average sushi bar. While the night was pleasant and the staff friendly, the food isn't anything to rave about. It was a bit underwhelming compared to places like the Sushi Club in Pyrmont, Zen Restuarant in Randwick or Manmaruya in Ashfield, where you are inspired by each dish brought to the table and feel like you're in Japan. Otoro isn't a place I'd return to for a celebration but somewhere I'd stop off after work for takeaway if I couldn't be bothered cooking.
Jaide
Beware Please: I bought my voucher through scoopon.com.au and I've tried to call up to make a weekend booking ever since I bought my voucher and the girl who answered the calls said herself as a manager would not allow me to make any weekends booking..her answers straight away without even look at her appointment booklet and she would just say"sorry all booked out and yea sorry booked out too",so I hung up & called again this time I said I have NO voucher then she said "yes what time do u like for Saturday " wtf..this restaurant is bloody scamming people money to those who buys voucher online
Pamela Poci
Nice and fresh sashimi. Generous bento boxes and very polite service.

Speechless. Just got home from Marrickville. I took a friend for his birthday as part of the Scoopon deal I purchased a few weeks ago. I called up on last Wednesday night to make a booking for 7:30pm tonight (Monday night). The gentlemen took down my name, phone number and confirmed the booking after I gave him the Scoopon barcode number. We drove from Liverpool only to find that it was closed. We asked a Chinese restaurant next door if they knew what the situation was and they told us "they are on holidays for 2 weeks". Firstly why did the man take our details down over the phone instead of telling us that they are closed. Secondly, why not call everyone who had made bookings in those 2 weeks that they had to go. Extremely frustrated.
Traminator9
Disappointing. My friends and I went to eat here as part of the Scoopon deal and found the experience to be quite disappointing. We were told we'd only be able to be seated for an hour as they were fully booked out later on, though when we were forced to leave the place was less than half full. The service was poor as we were often ignored when trying to order and were brought out the wrong orders. The food was alright but was not worth the trek.
Kobayashi.fukuda
Deep Fried Rubbish. My friend and I went there for an all you can eat sushi buffet dinner on a Scoopon deal. We both agreed that the only tasty dish on the menu was the edamame because it only requires boiling. The texture of the sushi rice was hard as a rock. The coating on the gyoza, spring rolls, karaage chicken and prawn were way too dark, hard and overdone. While the service was okay, the food leaves a lot to be desired. I suggest that you save your money and spend it on KFC instead.

Not good at all.. Despite the excellent, almost too good to be true reviews below, I unfortunately had a terrible night with my partner here.

THe food portions were measly and small, the staff were extremely disinterested and inattentive when we tried to order more food. Also, the place looked quite dirty.

Just me two cents!

Hidden Gem. This place is great. If you like Japanese food but are hesitant about going to a small unknown restaurant...don't be. You won't regret it. Great Japanese food, good value and just off the main road (so a little quieter). The food is always delivered promptly and your meal is capped off with a lovely little fruit platter.

The chef obviously loves his work and is very proud of it.

We'll be back there many more times... :-)
Magniatil
This place is too good to be true. The food is fantastic and the prices seem like typos they are so low. And the end of the meal- a fresh fruit salad for free- not just the first time but every single time I've been here (which is a lot). We recently decided to move away from Marrickville, and during the decision making process this place was actually a legitimate reason not to leave. It's that good.
Ricky Mayeux
This place is situated across the Marrickville post office and is excellent in terms of taste, appeal and smell. The service is good and the staff are humble and aim to please customers with excellent priority. The green tea they serve is excellent, as are their bento meals and sushi platters. Definitely worth the travel from Liverpool.
