Review Maki And Ramen - Marrickville

Danny Merrey
Before the pandemic Maki and Ramen was a weekly destination for me, despite the considerable travel to get here. I'm very happy to be back and to be enjoying wonderful food and atmosphere. Also very pleased that Yuko is still here and just as friendly, and happy to guide me through the menu. The Black Garlic Ramen is a must try, and I have never had better anywhere. I can see this venue is going to be a regular visit again, and looking forward to another venture through the menu. My latest addition is Chashu Ramen. Slow-braised, melt in your mouth, tender pork belly in a miso broth. A magnificent, flavoursome meal.

I’ve been a regular customer here for almost 2 years. All the dishes look and taste really nice, reasonable prices. One of the best thing about this restaurant is the front of house waitress, her name is Yuko, she is extremely friendly n helpful. This restaurant is on my recommendation list!

Positive notes: great vibe and decor. The place is spacious and looks very clean with lots of figurines from anime/Japanese culture. Food wise is just average. -Prawn tempura sushi is cold and not freshly made. -Salad sauce is a little salty however salmon sashimi is fresh and delicious. -Okonomiyaki and miso are just average, nothing too special. 1.5% surcharges for card payments, food prices are reasonable but portions are small and hence for 2ppl I’d to go a little over 50 bucks. I wouldn’t go all the way just for this, but if you’re in the area and need some Japanese food fix, go for it!

Went for the first time with my family, and specifically for their dedicated vegetarian menu. Not many Japanese restaurants have this option. This place is an institution in Marrickville, considering how long it's been open. Menu is filled with varieties, from maki (should be obvious) and their many ramen options. We ordered non-vegetarian items as well as vegetarian/vegan options (half of our table was vegan). All dishes were delicious, well-cooked and seasoned. Vibe was relaxed and service was fast. Definitely will come back soon.

We enjoyed our ramen in the winter and their vibe has many animation wallpaper to bring me back to those days in the school. :-)

Broth was strong, flavourful but a bit salty and noodles were a bit soft. The other food was okay however.

I am a fans of spicy food, the SUPER SPICY RAMEN really got me!!! It tastes amazing, have to finish all the soup, the cute staff told me that different color chilli makes different smell. Also the side dishes are fantastic too, the SASHIMI is really fresh and my friend ordered karagee chicken twice

Cute little spot with good food, good vibes, and good staff. Went on a sunday lunchtimr so wasnt very busy at all and service was quick. Good place to satisfy cravings if youre in the area/local, but wouldn’t go out of my way for it.

Teriyaki fish bento box is my favourite! Ramens are the best in Sydney I've had yet.

My favourite Japanese restaurant in Marrickville - fun decor, great ramen (highly recommend the black garlic) and very lovely staff. Also love that it is BYO.

Loved the ambience and super friendly staff. Food was awesome and the place brings a breath of fresh air to the Illawarra viet strip (which I also love). Fully recommend checking it out.

Very well decorated place. Deep fried tofu has just the right amount of crust on it and the season is well and balanced. Homemade gyoza is average only. Good that they have something homemade but the skin is a bit too thick and the meat is a bit tasteless. Ramen is nice and the chashu is exceptional, well seasoned, slow coocked to soft and tender. The noodles is standard but not bad.

Curry with pork katsu is average.

The texture of the Tempura roll is not perfect - a bit loose and can fall apart. However the tempura is cooked well (need to try actual tempura next time) and the pawn inside isnt overcooked (which is very common in Japanese restaurants in Sydney.

Service was good.

Overall enjoyed the meal.

Noticed this new shop in Marrickville and looked ok, so I’ve decided to try the very basics to check the level of this shop.

First, I’ve noticed very unpleasant cigarette smell from the person who served us. That alone almost made me leave the shop straight away.

I’ve ordered Shoyu ramen, gyoza, tori-karaage. Shoyu ramen was not really Shoyu ramen. It seems that the base of the soup was shared with other types such as tonkotsu. It was not Shoyu ramen at all, I’ve never seen Shoyu ramen like that. The noodle was not hand made and it was almost the instant ramen called Maruchan-seimen (quite popular instant ramen in Japan). The egg was not properly prepared n the source use to make chashyu. Very disappointing product. Gyoza did not come with any sujyou. I had to eat it as is. Gyoza it self was made using a machine or one of those gyoza maker kitchen tool. Was not hand made. Chicken Karaage... was the worst. It was as if made with left over bits and pieces, and they were over cooked.

In summary, I would not recommend this place to anyone. No wonder why they had to over decorate the place with action figures and irrelevant Izakaya menus.

Cutest little place and the food is amazing. The tan tan ramen was heavenly and some of the best ramen I've had outside of Japan! Staff are super friendly and decor is something straight out of an akihabara side street. Love this place.

Fantastic food and experience.

The tonkotsu soup base is jammed full of flavour, the perfect blend of chicken, pork and garlic. The chicken adds a nice umami to allow the soup to be rich without being overly thick or sticky (I love Gumshara too, just trying to highlight the difference here).

The noodles are made in house, and even some of the veggies are grown by the chef. The soy milk is also made in house.

Haven't had a similar tonkotsu base anywhere else in Sydney so definitely worth a try for ramen fans.

Terikyaki tofu bento was also great. Tofu crispy, great flavours and the veggie fritter... once you start you can't stop.

I'm not into hyperbolic food reviews but this place is a real gem.
