Review Moorish Blue - McMahons Point

neo downunder
I rarely give bad reviews because I worked in the hospitality industry and I know how busy and chaotic it gets (especially in the kitchen) and I know that there’s a whole team tirelessly working to provide us good service. Having said that, here are a few things that the restaurant can improve on: - The servers should be more attentive. We waited for about 13-15 minutes just to get the menu and to have plates in our table. We booked the table a couple of days ahead and the restaurant is not even busy when we walked in so that long of a wait time is just absurd. - I understand the concept of tipping and I don’t have any issues with that, but usually whenever I’m being asked if I like to give a tip, the staff usually just hands over the machine for me to type the amount and that’s it. At Moorish, unfortunately, that’s not the case. It’s a bit awkward to be asked, how much you would like to tip in the same tone and manner as if you’re asking for our order. It’s like being pushed to do something that you don’t want to do which further worsen our whole dining experience. The dishes are ok but I guess the whole dining experience was just tainted because of the ridiculous wait time, inattentive staff and the not- so pleasant tipping encounter. I know Moorish Blue has awesome reviews but based on my experience- I can only give it 1 star and will never recommend it. Sorry.

Incredible food, all balanced so well by amazing flavours. As a non-seafood lover, I was skeptical of the barramundi and grilled squid salad but they were easily my favourite dishes. The broccoli purée is something special. Will return on our next Sydney visit!

Well deserved 5 stars! Second time I visited this restaurant and both times were amazing! Not just the food, but the service was also 5 stars! Ordered Morocan Eggplant salad (entree) and for mains: Tunisian Barramundi, Moorish Braised Lamb Tagine. Please do not lick your screen/monitor with the attached photos! :)

This place is amazing. Service was great with friendly staff. Food was so so delicious with unique taste. I would absolutely recommend this place. It was alittle bit cold but with drinks I solved it :)

We were friendly welcomed and greeted with a nice complimentary appetiser. The food was really delicious and well presented. The serving size was great for the price. Thank you a lot. Will surely come back!

I cannot fault the food at Moorish Blue! The flavours were absolutely divine! The highlight from the trio of dips would have to be the pumpkin dip... yum! The salmon with lentils and chermoula was also a stunning dish - the salmon skin crispy yet the meat juicy and tender. Service was generally ok, yet some younger staff obviously need more experience...

I have a bad review of this restaurant because I feel like I've been cheated. I checked the menu and wine list on their website before booking. The wine list is expensive-I usually only choose where to bring my own drinks, but in this case it is an exception because this is a special event. However, upon arriving at the restaurant, I found another, more restrictive, and more expensive wine menu. I pointed this out to the waitress, the waitress said "yes" and the site is outdated! I requested that my concerns be communicated to management, but did not complain further because I did not want to embarrass my guests. I didn't hear anything. So I'm not happy! That being said, I will admit that the food is good and the service is reasonable. But I won't go again.

Came here for lunch on a weekday. Tasty dishes and beautifully presented. Pita bread and dips was a highlight. Everyone seems to have enjoyed their mains too which were generously sized. Only downside was the wait time for my main which took over 40 mins to come out after the dips and bread. Otherwise would have given a higher rating.

I have food sensitivities and therefore whenever I go to a restaurant I check next to all meals what is GF and DF. I went to Moorish blue today and checked the menu and picked the barramundi as it said GF and DF. The meal came out with yoghurt on the side which is NOT DF. There were no wait staff around so I could not ask. I therefore ate my fish and salad as that should be ok for me. When the waiter came back to pick up the place I asked if it was yoghurt and he stated yes. I stated that it says GF and DF next to the meal and he said this is an option you can have. NO when it says DF and GF it means it is and if it is an option it must have DFO and GFO so you know you have to ask. I have had this condition for the past 8 years and know how to order a meal correctly! For him to tell me I should always ask even though he himself is not GF or DF is plain rude. If I asked the wait staff they would have said well yes it is as it has it next to meal on the menu. Not the best end to the meal as the fish was lovely but when it blatantly says GF and DF you have to make sure it is as otherwise people could order it and eat it thinking it is and get very sick. Please inform all tables that the details next to the meals are options not what they are. Thank you

I was really looking forward to tonight. I have been once before and the food was fantastic! I ordered the barramundi which was great and faultless. The wagyu beef special was the dish I really came back for. Unfortunately it didn't deliver. The flavour combination was fantastic but the meat itself was too chewy to eat. For dessert the pistachio baklava came in 2nd rate (soggy, over sweet with syrup, unnecessary fairy floss) to the tiramisu which I highly recommend. Finally, some staff were fantastic, others completely unaware. There are a lot of staff, but the joint can do with less staff who are properly trained. Knowing the specials and serving water when you offer it are musts in my book. Overall great location and warm atmosphere.

Not the best but not the worst either. I'd rate it slightly higher than average. The pork was a bit too salty for my taste. I waited until I finished my wine for the waiter to offer me the dessert menu, but he didn't bother so I went across the road to the Delicado for dessert instead.

Last night I hosted clients at the private room at Moorish Blue. Here is a description of the service we received. The first interaction we had with staff was when one of them came to the table and said "would you like to order". We had been sitting for a while and no-one came to greet us or explain the menu to us. The next interaction with staff we had was when I had to ask the waiter if we could have the wine list. This was after we had been given the menus and decided on the $55 set menu option. Our entrees came - they were really delicious. Then our mains came. But what was absolutely disgusting, was that the waiter dumped our mains in front of us and left all the dirty entree platters and plates on the table, and made no attempt to clean or prepare us for the main meal. I was so embarassed. My clients were from Singapore and were looking at me as it to say - is this really ok - to have to eat your main meal with clutter and dirty dishes in front of you. I then had to ask the other waiter to remove the dishes from the table! As if it was common practice that guests were eating in front of "crap". I was disappointed with my dining experience last night, it came as a bit of a shock as I had been to Moorish Blue when it first opened, and the service was friendly and attentive. If the Manager is reading this - you seriously need to train your staff with respect and courtesy and some "care factor" as this was not demonstrated last night.

This was our second lunchtime visit and very satisfied once again. The tastes are great and really enhance each dish. The salads are wonderful. I have had fish and chips both times, so good. We highly recommend for any meal.

I was rather disappointed with our dining experience there last night, mostly because of the lacklustre service. While we were seated promptly, nothing else about the service was. There was minimal initiation from the wait staff to take our orders, and after 45 mins from when we were seated, we were rather brusquely informed to place our orders as the kitchen was about to close; we arrived at 8. No attempt was made to take our food order before that instance. Nor was there any attempt to take our drinks order either before that - we had to walk up to the wait staff to ask for our order to be taken as multiple more subtle attempts to get their attention were ignored. We ordered a bottle of wine halfway through the meal, which never arrived, and subsequently had to be removed from our bill. Cocktails, for which this restaurant received good reviews and was one of the reasons we decided on dining here, are no longer available under this current management, despite the cocktails menu still being displayed on their website. When the staff were alerted to this, there was no apology and a reluctant explanation. To be fair, they did serve us classic cocktails/mocktails, just not those that were advertised (which sounded different and interesting). The icing on the cake was when I was questioned unapologetically, almost belligerently, as to why I did not want to leave a tip. The restaurant was not busy at the time, in fact it was more than half empty. All of the above was a pity, as the food was more than half decent, and the setting was beautiful. I am undecided as to whether I would dine here again, though hopefully our experience was a once off.

Lamb Targine was a generous size and the head Tunisian chef didnt disappoint in bringing full depth of flavour !!! So tender !!! The harissa lamb cutlets were absolutely beautiful! Portion sizes are great- I had to take half of mine home because I couldnt eat it all!! Great value and personal service from the owner!!

We had the most amazing dinner here on Friday night (our third visit). Your staff were so lovely, especially the lovely new girl on the door (I wish I could remember her name). The waiter we had was so helpful and incredibly happy to serve us. As for the food, well, what can I say? A mouthwatering extravaganza. Seriously the tastiest food I have eaten in ages. The place has a great vibe too (especially outside). Can't wait to come back :) Jo and George x

A truly faultless dining experience! It was difficult to choose from the menu but when we did, it didn't disappoint. Sensational food, friendly, attentive and knowledgeable service (thank you, Zac!) and a table visit at the end of our meal from the chef. Highly recommended!

Had a disappointing experience at Moorish Blue today. We had a group of 15 attend for a colleague’s farewell. We work just up the road and have been multiple times as smaller groups as we love the food. This time we were asked to pre order our meals as it was more convenient for the chef and cooperatively agreeing, I also asked if we could possibly split the bill so that one person doesn’t end paying a lot more for the others (as is always the case with big groups). They waiter said it was fine. When we all went up to pay for our food (everyone had the exact change for their meals) the owner yelled out at us aggressively that our group was stopping his business. The restaurant was not busy at the time, in fact there was no one waiting to pay behind us. I understand splitting bills is an inconvenience, but that is why we asked if it was possible beforehand. Very disappointing, especially myself and my colleagues have given Moorish Blue so much business in the past. In saying that, the food here is fantastic and the floor staff are always friendly.

I would give this place a 4.5 out of 5. The food we had was amazing (tagine and lamb cutlets), but unfortunately our service stopped after the mains and we were not attended to again until we gave up on the idea of dessert and headed off to pay.

We had dinner here last night and I took my husband back for lunch today. Perfect! Venue is lovely and restful and interesting. The staff are friendly and lastly, the food IS OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!! Textures and flavours and colours and presentation are all well done. Menu options for all food tastes. My advice is to finish with the rose-water panna cotta. Yes, you can fit it in!

Our first visit - pre-theatre at the Ensemble. We were very impressed. Great flavours, suitably generous portions and great presentation. We only noticed the specials when leaving or my wife would have wanted the whitebait. We'll be back - with more time and more friends. And - what a great group space for 10 at the front...amazing.
