Review Haldi - Melbourne

Haritha Thilakarathne
Went there for a spontaneous dinner out with a friend. The service was so quick and the staff is really friendly. I would say the waiter who served us is one of the best I've seen so far! He was so good with customers and flexible with our needs. Food was quite good and the curries we got for naan was up to the spicy level I was expecting.

Honestly, the only thing we loved in this restaurant was service and cocktails. Sharabi lassi was awesome. Food needs improvement we didn’t like the entree it was too dry and tasteless. I hope the restaurant takes adequate consideration on the prep of curries. Too watery

When I saw the restaurant I had high expectations, lovely decor and fitted restaurant. The food as very much as you would expect from a local Indian restaurant, it was nice but not special. I thought it was a bit pricy considering.

Absolutely amazing experience at Haldi Indian Restaurant. To begin with the decor and ambience; It had a really casual yet neat vibe. Service was incredible with excellent staff welcoming us and checking on us throughout the night. Drinks were lovely and refreshing and had excellent presentation. Food was to-die-for and the presentation was superb. Would extremely recommend trying Haldi as it is a restaurant that I would absolutely return to.

This is one of the best Indian Reaturents in Melbourne. Service, food, presentation and overall experience was one to remember. Traditional Indian with modern touch. Highly recommended!

I’m Hyderabadi, and I’ve tried a lot of Indian restaurants in Melbourne. I have to say that Haldi is one of the BEST! This was was the most authentic Indian food I’ve had in this city. The chicken vindaloo tikka is to die for, and the garlic naan was immaculate. Other dishes had meat that I don’t eat, but my cousin who’s a chef gave them a good rating.

Exceptional Indian food. The Rogan Josh had a great flavor, with super tender lamb, & the vindaloo was like no other in quality & spice. Keen to try other curries. Service was good & servings were generous. Restaurant was quiet, but don’t let that out you off, the food is A grade

Haldi is Shop front Indian restaurant in Moonee Ponds with parking out the front unlimited after 6:00pm.
Food is fresh and all hand made. We went as a group of 14 and had the buffet and some entrees. These two included-
Samoa’s that we filled with flavoursome chickpea, potato curry mix coated with a crispy pastry accompanied with yoghurt and mint sauce.
Onion fritters bhajia topped with crispy kale. Definitely worth ordering.
We also ate an entree of salmon with cardamom sauce served in a roasted onion. Cardamom was subtle and the salmon was perfectly cooked with it flaky texture.
We ate daal, pea and paneer curry, Rogan Josh and butter chicken. I found the butter chicken sauce a little sweet but others devoured it lol. Ask for chilli as most dishes are pretty tame to cater for the larger number of dinners.
We also ate biryanis (chicken and veggie). Usually served with a roti on top to keep all inside hot. I was so full so only had a mouthful but it was Very flavoursome.
The only thing that let Haldi down Wes the toilets. They were clean and had all needed items crammed into a small space. They do need some maintenance either their floor tiles as they are loose and wall paint is chipping off.
Definitely worth a try. Good Food is what we all went for and that is what we got.

Came across this Indian restaurant on Zomato Gold and thank god I did because the food was really good. Lots of flavor and their presentation was on point. Customer service was also really good too. I will definitely recommend this place!

Wont deny that the food wasnt great. Really impressive. but bad customer service. We went there with a gold membership. And forgot to mention at the start. Yes it was a genuine mistake but the guy made a big fuss when paying the bill. Would have been happy if he had politely declined giving a discount instead of being rude about the fact that we forgot to mention before ordering the food. We have used zomato gold so many times and no other restaurant made such a big fuss if we forgot to mention that we had gold membership. Also we had two Australians having food next to us who asked for the thali for dinner and they got it where as when we were looking for the thali menu the lady snatched the menus away saying it is only available for lunch. Wierd because the two ladies opposite to us ordered thalis and they got it. Food was good but it still does not beat the fact that the customer service needs to be much better. People like friendly staff who are ready to be accomodating. Not someone who snaps at you.

Delicious little spot on our neighbourhood.. deliberately decides to be different with its menu and does it brilliantly.. some of the delicacies reminded me of home in India. A must try!

My wife and I had a wonderful dining experience. Excellent taste and ambience. Haldi has taken Indian dining experience in the north to the next level. Highly recommend if you are looking for a nice evening with good food.
The World Loves Melbourne
Haldi is a top notch Indian restaurant in trendy Puckle Street in Moonee Ponds and is serving up some of the best Indian food in Melbourne. Creamy spicy fragrant curries are made from scratch. Sauces are authentic and diverse, and are not mixed together from one dish to another (like many Indian restaurants).

In fact each dish is created from scratch in its own pan. Thus the dishes are vibrant, fresh and authentic. Our experience at Haldi Indian restaurant was sensory and joyous, with big flavours and first class presentation of dishes. Haldi is several steps up from "a good honest local Indian restaurant" and shows a touch of class while still being excellent value.

Paneer Nuggets featuring a Golden paneer sandwich complete with Tokyo onion rings, captures the imagination and the taste buds. Served with chana and tomato sauce it is a fun and playful dish with modern interpretation but all the flavours of paneer are there. A great start to our meal.

We also enjoyed Papadum featuring Lentil crisps and dips with Vindaloo chutney, Beetroot chutney and Mint chutney. Note the vibrant colours. This was achieved without anything artificial. Tangy flavours were excellent.

Tawa Murgh hit the high notes featuring Tawa grilled chicken breast with herb flavour, stuffed mince lamb, roasted to perfection. This is a generous portion for an entree.

Sharabi Raan is a delightful smoky dish served with a touch of theatre, with Raj removing a glass cloche with release of smoke. Lamb marinated with old monk and spices is smoked with herbs. This is a dish I've never experienced and I found it comforting and rewarding to indulge in delicious tender smoky spicy lamb, especially in winter.

Curries are a specialty at Haldi, and we felt there was generous amount of meat in the meat based curries but also the sauces were a standout. Sauces are where the real skill lies and these were first class.

Butter Chicken is often a dish from which we gauge an Indian restaurant. Haldi serves up a vibrant rich creamy Butter Chicken with right amount of spice (butter chicken should never have excessive heat) as one of the best in Melbourne.

Beef Vindaloo option for those who like it hot, also hit the mark with diced beef in garlic wine marinade and dried chilli peppers.

A highlight was the "Chef Special" Fish Curry featuring Rockling, with perfectly cooked fish in a golden spicy sauce. It's not every day I would choose a fish curry but this was outstanding.

The wine list here is excellent ; it's not huge but carefully selected with top notch wines that I recognised, at reasonable prices. The wine list has been crafted by expert sommeliers to match the food. We enjoyed a bottle of McLaren Vale's finest, the Mitolo Angela 2016 McLaren Vale Shiraz which as a medium to full-bodied shiraz was a great match for our spicy dishes.

Dessert also hit the high notes with a fusion Ras Malai, inspired by the Bengal region of India it features rich cheesecake with a deconstructed Oreo crust and pistachio kulfi.

Highly recommended.

We had a great dining experience at Haldi recently. The dishes are delightfully fresh and tasty. This Indian restaurant brings an innovative style to the food which is delicious.

Ive been thinking of going to this restaurant for a while. This restaurant is situated in Moonee Ponds. There's a decent variety in their menu. We were in a group and for entree we had sharabi raan, chicken vindaloo tikka, paneer Tikka. We were quite impressed with the presentation. It wasn't like the average Indian food. For mains we had awadhi lamb korma, kasturi murg, kadhai paneer, dal basanti and naans. We really liked the kasturi murg. All dishes were remarkably redolent of their provenance. The only minor flaw was the kadhai paneer that we specifically asked to be more spicy was not up to our liking, but this is entirely my preference. The service was fast and friendly. I do recommend this place and will visit again.

Not your average Indian cuisine. The chefs at Haldi really put in effort to make fresh, delicious and insta-worthy food. The staff is extremely helpful and polite. I'm definitely going back for more!

This is one dining experience that I will be raving about for quite a while! The head chef hails from Atta in Albert Park, and we absolutely adored Atta when it first opened. In fact so much, that T had his birthday there. So, when we hear about Haldi, we just knew that we had to check it out. It did not disappoint.

Offering a refined dining experience, Haldi is no ordinary Indian eatery. Serving up much more than just curry in a pot, we found each dish individually, and intricately prepared, cooked just to your liking and delicately presented.
For an extraordinary Indian experience with a modern twist, you need not look further.

[invitational]
4.5
Indian cuisine with elevated experience.

The place is pretty well kept, with quite a lot of seats at front and back. The staffs were all really warm, especially the manager. Food did take a while, which was the only downsides from the experience, as there were bit of a wait in between dishes.

Tried their winter tasting menu (55 pp).

We were served papadums with their chutneys. Paapdums were crispy and tasty, and we especially loved the tamarind sauce.

For entrees, the sheekh kebab was nicely seasoned and just had a great texture. It's bit spicy and definitely highly spiced, accompanied with beetroot and mint sauce, asparagus and blanched zucchini.

The paneer nuggets had a nice flavor, it's sort of a fried form of palak paneer with cottage cheese and blanched spinach curry, topped with onion rings. This one though was a tad bit dry, could do with some elements to compliment the dish.

The chicken vindaloo tikka was enjoyable, flavored really well and was tender with a bit of char on the outside. I love the vegetables on the bottom, the sweetness and creaminess compliment the salty and spiced chicken well.

The entrees were generous in portion that we were quite full by the time the main arrived, which were three different types of curries, naan bread an basmati rice.

All curries were so delightful, each stood out in flavor. Naan bread was really well made, fragrant and not bit buttery, while the rice was generous and smelled quite good too.

I love their butter chicken, chicken was so tender and the curry itself was addictive in flavor. Couldn't stop going back for this one, it's just so so tasty.

Beef vindaloo was bit of a contrast, with a bit of a spicy kick and on the saltier side. The meat itself was pretty tender and definitely savoury.

The palak paneer was cooked beautifully, great flavor and texture, and cheese had a nice texture too.

The meal ended with Gajrella, aka warm carrot pudding, which was really interesting. It has some soft nuts, raisins and carrot in there, it's also sweet from the reduced milk but not too sweet which we enjoyed. I do think something lighter would be better to finish off the heavy meal.

Mango lassi was also really yummy, it's bit too thick so it's hard to suck but flavor wise, we loved it.

P,S Portion was really generous we took some away and had food coma lol.

Overall, a solid place for a nicer than your usual Indian dining experience, with beautiful dishes worth your bucks.

( follow for more!✨)

xx,joelle

Located within the hustle and bustle of Puckle Street, Haldi serves up hearty Indian dishes, packed with flavour, cooked in traditional methods, but served with modern flair.

The kitchen is headed up head chef, Atar Singh, who has previously trained with master chefs in India, including the one of the masterminds behind butter chicken (Sanjeev Kapoor). He then headed to Japan where he was a TV Chef for five years, but more recently he was head chef at Atta Restaurant in Albert Park.

Delicious Indian food, well presented with generous servings. The standout dish for us was the entree chicken tikka which came out in a cloche to retain a smokey flavour. Attentive and friendly service. The only small criticism would be the restaurant decor could do with more warmth and ambiance. We will be back again!

No stone is unturned when you step foot into Haldi. Out in Moonee Ponds a well thought out indian restaurant where the menu is well executed and left simple. Rarely do you find an indian restaurant with a one page menu. All the flavours in the dishes were amazing along with impeccable presentation from fancy smoked cloche arrivals. The service provided by Raj was very personalised and first class his experiences in the industry came out in all elements of the whole experience. Can't wait to come back. Must try the Dum Biryani the best ive had in Melbourne.

It was our first time at Haldi yesterday and we were blown away. Being Indian ourselves we are quite fussy when it comes to authentic and tasty Indian food. Haldi’s food was amazing.

The menu is not too big but means they can concentrate more on the dishes they have. Everything we ate was full of flavour and very authentic. The dishes were not loaded with ghee and I felt quite light leaving the restaurant.
Only criticism, it would be nice if the ambiance and mood of the restaurant fit the style of the food.

Love this place! Such beautiful authentic Indian flavours. Also so much effort in the presentation, but doesn’t lack in flavour. I highly recommend the butter chicken here and the lamb biriyani

Pleasant surprise to go to an Indian restaurant that can offer such a unique curry. We ordered a chicken and fish curry but id say the chicken was a stand out, so many bursts of flavour, ive been to a lot of Indian restaurants this would be the best so far. They took a little while to bring the food but the owner kept us up to date with the progress of the food and it was defiantly worth the wait. The fact that i could also get GF Roti was a bonus. Staff very friendly

I went to Haldi tonight with some friends. The restaurant is attractively decorated with a nice modern appearance. You could happily come here for a celebration such as a birthday. The tables were nicely set and seats comfortable.

The food was very good. Each dish had distinctive flavours, unlike some Indian restaurants where the food all tastes the same. Three of my friends were Indian and all of them assured me that it tasted authentic and very good. We shared three entrees - samosas, potato and lentil parcels and chicken vindaloo tikka. The serves were quite large so even though the price was relatively high for an entree, there was plenty to share amongst five of us.

We shared four mains - Kashmiri lamb, dhal, panak paneer and malai kofta and the quite large serves proved to be plenty for the five of us. All the dishes were delicious as well as the garlic nan. One thing to mention is the presentation where there seemed to be quite a lot of care taken to present each dish attractively. The samosas had garlic sauce on the top and pomegranate arils scattered around the base. Service was good too. I think they quietly put a lot of effort into creating a more classy dining experience.
To sum up - a great new restaurant in Puckle Street with really good quality food, a nice atmosphere and one of the few Indian restaurants I've been to where I've thought that each dish had its own lovely distinctive flavours.

Such rich and balanced flavours and wonderful presentation. Our favorite is the smoked lamb entree. Best Indian restaurant we've had in Melbourne.

Stumbled on this Indian restaurant when looking for a quick Sunday night dinner. We had requirement for gluten free for me and noted lots of GF on the menu. Service was friendly and helpful and food came out quickly. Presentation was exceptional, the best I have seen in an Indian restaurant. And I am pleased today the food tasted as good as it looked. We had a selection of entrees and mains and without exception all had beautiful spice and flavour. We also received complimentary dessert and a free wine as the bottle was almost finished. Owner said they had been open only 3 mths. We will return for sure And delighted to find something of such quality locally.
