About the only problem with Melbourne having so many fantastic restaurants to try is that you are away from your favourite, and the best, for too long. It was so good to get back to Longrain last night before taking in the Wizard of Oz. I always enjoy the meal at Longrain but, last night was extra special and simply reminded me it should never be as long as 12 months between visits. We feasted on some favourites during the evening but began with the betel leaf, smoked trout, green papaya, lime leaf & salmon roe. This two-bite morsel is the perfect starter and the incredible flavours build in your mouth after you have finished as you wit for the next treat. The main fare had to begin with the filled eggnet with prawns, peanuts & caramelised coconut (minus the customary pork inclusion for us Vegiequarians). Don’t be mistaken by the simplicity of the name of the dish. The flavours are superb and as a cold dish you save some of it for a little later on in the meal. The salt & pepper silken tofu, crispy shallots & sweet soy is the absolute best and I challenge anyone who says they do not like tofu to try this dish. If this does not convert you to eating tofu then nothing will. The way the silken tofu is prepared and presented here is one of the very best dishes I have ever had. Adding a little zing and another world of exciting flavours was the green curry, roasted pumpkin, heirloom carrots, apple & pea eggplant that was simply mouth=watering. The Jap pumpkin is roasted to perfection and is accompanied by a sea of wonderful flavours. Not enough room tonight for the chargrilled Assam king prawns, pineapple, cucumber & mint but, that is just an excuse to come back again. You cannot finish a meal at Longrain without indulging in the coconut sorbet. It is the creamiest heaven sent treat that is likely to see you order a second, or even a third, scoop before you finish. Making this place all the more special is outstanding service from friendly staff who know what they are doing, seem to want to be helpful, and who can genuinely advise the rookies on good choices to be made to balance the flavours they are ordering. I love the way this place goes about what it does in making guests feel welcome. I most certainly love the food! Longrain, you are definitely still my number one. Thank you.

Having only the weekend in Melbourne we wanted something great, being from Brisbane, we have thai, but it's difficult to find the fusion long grain offers. I seen a solid rating on zomato and thought we would have a go and see if we could get in. The vibe as soon as you walk through the door, the lighting, the open bar and viewing window into the kitchen, creates a really warm atmosphere. Now the place was packed, so expectations of available seating without a booking was lookin slim, the resteraunt manager greeted us, and without hesitation said no problem, take a seat, looking at around 20mins (no problem by me if the food lives up to expectations) we ordered a bottle of wine, and entrees while we were seated at the bar. The oysters I could have sworn were delivered from the ocean to plate, and the prawn larp was so intensely tasty, contrasting herbs and spice, wow, and all delivered within 15mins of ordering. Once we had finished we were seated at a table. The wait staff are so tentative and knowledgeable, any questions, they had the answer on hand. We went with the pork hock and lamb neck curry. I've never eaten, tastier, more succulent and just all round refined Asian cuisine in my life. So impressed, we left in a food coma, but so satisfied. Thank you longrain, we will no doubt return when back in Melbourne.

food there is really awesome, I. particularly the oysters, they put a touch of lemon sherbet is tremendous, brings out the freshness and flavor of the Sydney rocks. the other dishes are also great. so despite its a Thai fusion and I am not a big fan of fusion food, I definitely will go back again next time I am in Melbourne

Luckily we arrived early.....without a booking....as the place filled up quite quickly afterwards on a busy Friday night. We were shown immediately to a seat at one of the share tables. They are large and roomy and they space you out between groups. Loved the food, the wine and the atmosphere. The service is friendly and attentive. Would definitely go back, highly recommend.

Excellent inventive fresh food , engaged vibrant staff all at a suprisingly lower than expected for a top class experience. Pre dinner cocktails, bottle of quality wine , after dinner drinks with 3 quality courses for $250 for two. I will sing Longrains beauty to all who will listen. Thank you!

Suggested by a friend for pre-show this place did not disappoint. The cocktails are to die for and the pork hock is one of the tastiest dishes I have had in a long time. The fish special - Hapuka in Curry was delicious. The wait staff were both helpful and knowledgeable about dishes and serving sizes. A short wait at the door before opening at 5.30pm lead to an amazing pre-show event! Thanks we will be back!

We went to three restaurants over the weekend and Longrain was by far the best followed by Tipo 00.

My husband and I went here to celebrate our anniversary and we were met with not only exceptional food, but an amazing atmosphere and attentive staff. The caramelized pork hock was incredible - possibly one of the tastiest things we have ever eaten! Thank you for making our night memorable!
