Great old fashioned pub! Staff really friendly and our roast beef meal was delicious! Highly recommend!
Me and the Mrs headed in for a quick bite on our last night in Melbourne. After reading some great reviews we had high expectations and definitely weren't let down...We had the southern fried chicken burger and beef burger, they were amazing...wish pubs in perth made food anywhere near that good...
Great atmosphere, cosy little pub and reasonably priced, would definitely come back again
Friendly and helpful bar staff., great atmosphere, great range of beer on tap , could use schooners instead of pints , the burger was tasty
This little pub drew us in, by its sheer exterior character and we were so incredibly happy we followed our instincts!
Wow great music great food great service.
Loved it
We love this place love the staff Love the food and atmosphere
Thank you as always for being such fun staff, great service and yum food! We love Steak Night! Best one going around! Staff really make the experience! 💖💖💖
Had lunch there today, great food and old pub atmosphere,no artificial or processed foods, chicken Parma great, hosts really nice thank you
Neighbourhood pub great for Wed night steak night with sweet potato fries, friendly staff and service and a blazing fireplace on cold nights. Try the current take away menu, porterhouse steaks, lamb shank and mash (delicious), chic parma and chic burger, are all great meals when the cold and laziness sets in and you wonder about dinner options!
Great steak, great Parma with real chicken (not the processed variety), decent kids meals and good friendly service. We will be back.

Will return For another meal 😊
The best steaks cooked to exactly how we wanted. Side accompaniments were also very tasty. Not enough sauce unfortunately and the desserts are very 1980s. Will defs be back for the steaks though.
The best pub in South Melbourne. I think the food has dropped off slightly in recent months, but the staff are so lovely and accommodating, and the atmosphere is always fantastic. It’s a great pub for watching footy having a nice long lunch with colleagues, or a trivia night out with friends.
Extremely friendly staff and very good food. The bartender recommended the lamb shanks with vegetables instead of mash and it was an excellent choice. Absolutely loved it. Meat was tender and the sauce it came in was mouth watering. It was also a huge portion which is always a good thing.
This is the place to go to wether it be for a Monday night burger or an any day classic char grilled steak! The railway hotel in South Melbourne has an indulging vibe in both the bar and the dining area with friendly staff and great new management.
I visit this restaurant at least once a week with my family and wouldn’t pick anywhere else to go with them. The staff are so friendly and provide a very professional service.
So excited by this tradional old pub. Huge chicken snitzel and my husband had confit of duck excellent. Cant fault the service so friendly. Will come again only have a week left in melbourne visiting our daughter but will definately be back.

Celebrated Father's Day dinner here and it was great for both adults and kids!
Good selection of meals on the menu and the kids meal included ice cream.
Everyone was happy with their meals. And the serves were generously portioned.
Service was efficient and staff were very friendly too!
Dining area was a bit small and pretty private from the main bar which I prefer especially when dining with kids but only downside to the restaurant area is the decor is a bit outdated.
Overall a great dining experience!
Was in the area and felt like a pub meal. Found this place on Zomato and decided to give the $14 Parma Tuesday’s a try. I thought i wouldn’t be able to finish it when it came out, a massive serve but it was so good I managed to finish the entire thing. Hands down one of the best Parma’s I’ve eaten. Service was friendly, attentive and fast. The Parma itself had a light crumb which I prefer, real chicken breast cooked perfectly. The Napoli sauce was good, the right amount and the melted 4 cheeses gave the Parma and nicer taste. I’d happily pay full price for this!
I’ve been to the Railway many times and it always been a enjoyable time. The public bar is usually bustling with friendly locals. The staff have always been excellent and professional.
The food is awesome, pub staples, Parma, rissoles, steaks and the best fat home made chips you’ll find anywhere.
During summer this place is packed. The outside tables are a perfect place to enjoy the evening day light savings and a late dinner. I recommend the guacamole, it’s fresh, chunky and went well with the crispy skinned salmon and mash. Winter, the heaters have trouble keeping those sitting street side cosy-best to dine inside.
Great local pub in South Melbourne. They have a wide range of beers and alcohol to suit your needs. This place is spacious, outdoor & indoor seatings, shows sports channel, have a pool table and one old school pinball machine. Food is pretty good too where they run specials on different days. For example it was $14 for chicken parma every Tuesday.
Fantastic old pub. Loved the decor, warm inviting fire in the dining room. Service was spot on. Food was amazing. My salmon was cooked beautifully with crispy skin and slightly crispy on the underside but the flesh was soft and falling apart and lightly pink, perfect! The lamb shanks fell off the bone and served in a rich sauce, hubby said they were incredible. Definitely be back, great to find a pub with old character and fantastic food!
We visited this hotel using our Entertainment docket. Very friendly warm service, welcoming fire and nicely arranged dining room. I ordered the duckling which was absolutely delicious, fully intend going back just to be able to order this dish again, the second choice was fish and chips, very very generous serving of fish and the opinion back was that the batter was just right - light and not too heavy. Full marks to this hotel.
If a mate ever tells you to "meet me at the Railway for a beer" you might want to consider cutting them loose as friends and making new ones that can be more specific with their plans. We have been to quite a few "Railway's" over the years - The Railway in Yarraville, The Railway in Brunswick, The Railway Club in Port Melbourne and even The Railway Friendly Hotel in Byron Bay. Long story short, this country isn't burdened with a shortage of Railways, and yet somehow, the Railway Hotel in South Melbourne has eluded us.
The food here is great. All your pub classics done right! The proteins are always cooked perfectly - parmas, steaks, ribs, fish... The accompanying sides (salads and veggies) are a bit bland or simple, but ok. Friendly service and a comfy environment. Family friendly also!
We went Saturday night for dinner with friends
Charming old pub the staff are great their was a function in the garden court yard so the staff recommended that we order so looking at the menu that stand out was The Beef Brisket so I ordered it & what a great dish & my friend ordered 350g Porterhouse Steak & veg its was cooked perfect 👌 the only let down was the entree we ordered a mixed platter that was over priced & food was cold but other than that it was a great experience & I will be back 7/10
My family and I were very impressed with the steak we had here. We had the scotch fillet & eye fillet, and they were cooked to perfection. The sauces that you can also choose are delicious - I recommend the blue cheese or mushroom. You can also add garlic butter! The chips that also came with it were thick, crunchy and seasoned well. Sides are also pretty decent - order the cauliflower gratin and Portobello mushrooms. Would definitely come back again as the steak tastes great and it's good value for money!
Friendly place, with lots of space. Great for kids. The food is nice too. Gotta try the sunday roast if you're here on Sunday. Nice big portions. The starter chatter platter is nice too. Highly recommended. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
I stumbled across this place with a bunch of friends because we were nearby the south melbourne market, didnt expect much of this place, it had a very antique look and feel, but wow the food blew me away!!
$17 for a 350g porterhouse with chips and vegetables on wednesday? Crazy value! The steak had a good sear, was slightly more done than i wanted it to be but thats okay, was really juicy and flavourful! I recommend the garlic butter sauce to go with the steak!!
Only thing was that i felt that the waitress could’ve been a little bit friendlier!
Would definitely come back again👍
One of, if not, the best Sunday roasts in Melbourne. (Not available Mon - Sat). The staff are so friendly I want to drug test them........................................................
A proper pub with proper pub food and a proper pub atmosphere. And no pokies. Super friendly staff, plenty of room to spread out, and no-one too worried if you want to watch cricket on the big screen rather than have a chat. I'm a fan.
Went for steak night on a Wednesday which was $20 which gets you a sauce and two sides which is pretty good value. Good old fashioned local pub with fireplace and friendly staff always a winner in my eyes. Steak was a good thick porthouse pretty good size most bits very tender and cooked to liking. Sweet potato chips were nothing special just straight out of a Mccains bag and without doubt they need to offer red wine sauce with the steak.
Another fantastic night at our favourite old school pub.
We were a little disappointed as some of the entrees had changed as we have our favourites, but the kids quickly warmed to the new sweet potato fries and us to the southern fried chicken strips.
Nothing beats old school, good food and a place where we can bring the kids and dog all in one.
Dont change!

Really enjoyed their scotch fillet with mushroom sauce- sauce was really tasty and the mash that came with it was creamy and buttery! My partner however ordered the brisket which was so-so. Would come back here on a weeknight for their $10 pastas!
Really good service, used the entertainment book voucher and got 2 eye fillet steaks for $35 which were really good! Medium rare Cooked well not over or under. Mash and veggies as the side were perfect. It has a real pubby vibe with a couple of TVs and a dining area at the back. Also a pool place so has something for everyone. Definitely recommend this place!
Absolutely love steak night here on Wednesdays. One of the few places that actually do medium rare perfectly! The sides that come with the steak are good too - highly recommend the sweet potato fries.
Droppped in on a Saturday night
We went because we had an entertainment book discount
Staff were excellent. Friendly and informed
Beer was good. Wine was. Good. Good selection and good prices
Steaks were good. Cooked as ordered. Good tasting flavorsome meat good sauce etc. god value
This is one of the last old school pubs with great old school deco
Nothing here is great. It is all good. good Is ok. Good food and drink and venue and good venue.
I would drop in without the discount voucher
Came with a few friends for steak night. It was worth the visit. Steak was better than most 'steak night' specials. Love the classic feel and playing some pool.
Came here with a few friends and 2 kids for dinner. Place was packed despite being a weekday, and they manage to maintain a good service standard. the waitress was attentive and the food was great!
Quality pub meal. Excellent and friendly staff. Great wine and beer selection. Food was just delicious.....sweet potato fries were a winner!!!
My favourite pub in the inner south. It's got a fire, pumping atmosphere, awesome tiki-style beer garden, warm and friendly staff and a good selection of beer and wine. The Wednesday night steak specials are awesome value, and the steak is typically excellent (I did have one experience were it was a bit more cooked than I'd like, but you can't be perfect all the time). I love the place, but fortunately it's not walking distance because if it was I'd be broke and have cirrhosis of the liver
Splendid Pub Grub
Well, what a pleasure this visit was! Carole and I had dinner here recently to help my sister celebrate her birthday. And, celebrate in style we did!
The Railway Hotel is a step back in time to around the 1930’s - 1940’s era. It is not hard to imagine the bar being buried in bodies seeking a beer before the old closing time of 6 PM was eliminated in favour of 10 PM closing. Naturally, it has all the old furnishings only make the experience that much more believable. None of the modern touches of today’s hotels, just a simple and delightful walk down the lane ways of yesteryear which only makes it that much more welcoming.
They have and excellent and extensive menu which will serve virtually everyone’s tastes. They do cater for children. With a somewhat large party, each of us had something different.
Carole and I shared crumbed and deep-fried calamari for our entrée. Served with a home-made tartare sauce, it was delicious, and extremely tender. Insofar as it was coated with a polenta and lemon myrtle crumb, made it even more interesting.
Can thoroughly recommend the steak, which seems to be one of its most popular menu items. From what I could see on others’ plates, the steak was tender and delicious – there was none left. Carole chose the salmon and said it was first class.
For my part, I chose a sausage, being a sausage fan from way back, especially when they’re served with onion gravy and mashed potato. Enjoyed the meal, although, it was my fault I did not inquire what the sausage was. I was served a spicy sausage where in fact I was hoping for a traditional English pork sausage. However, that is my fault, I just didn’t ask enough questions when I ordered. The sausage I was served was great.
The menu as far as desserts is very extensive, with our party choosing a variety of desserts. I particularly enjoyed their Eaton Mess, which I chose as we do not see it on many menus and it is always something to be admired when you do find it. It was great, could hardly fault it excepting I would have liked to have seen perhaps a little bit less of the sauce served with it, as it tended to be a little overpowering. However not to detract from the dessert, it was thoroughly enjoyable.
One of the more interesting aspects is the bar service, and in particular the number of craft beers they have on tap. Whilst not being a great beer drinker, I did enjoy sampling a couple of the brews and I thought the dark ale was particularly pleasant, especially when made up into a portagaf with lemonade. There is a wine list provided and I’m sure that you would find something to suit your taste in that list.
The bar service is excellent, recognising that you need to go to the bar to receive service, wine and drink service to the tables is not available. It is a pleasure to go up to the bar as there is lots to be seen, and with very helpful bar staff, they are always pleased to provide you with a taste before you buy. The wait staff are also very personable and very helpful, it was good fun working with them. The time between courses was also well worked out so nothing was rushed.
Prices are very fair, with generous portions. To me, they presented very good value for food which was well above the average for normal pub grub. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will be very happy to return soon - Me, in particular, so as I can indulge in a steak.
All in all, it was a splendid night, the environment and atmosphere made it all that much more enjoyable. Congratulations to the team on a job well done.
Authentic and genuine Aussie pub! Came here for Father's Day last weekend and we all left in high spirits! Phenomenal service including a confirmation phone call to make sure we knew how to get there! Hearty, quality food and generous portions! Cosy atmosphere with quirky little extras such as a pool table, fire, retro arcade games and pinball machine! Look forward to coming back when the weather starts picking up to check out the beer garden!
One of south melbourne's best pubs. Food and staff and the wood fire just make it! Highly recommend the Wednesday steak night with a glass of red
Long story short, I booked a restaurant and then gave everyone the wrong name and address haha, anyway we decided to stay here and eat anyway.
I chose the Angus scotch fillet with mushroom sauce and sides of mash potato and sweet potato fries. The steak was perfectly medium rare like I asked and was tender and delicious. The mash was lightly buttery and the sweet potato fries deliciously crispy. The mushroom sauce had sliced mushroom in it but not house made.
Overall I enjoyed my meal but the house special; the beef brisket was too dry and salty even though the sauce was delicious.
Service wasn't there, there was nobody monitoring the tables so I was forced to go to the bar every time to get their attention.
Decor was quite plain, with large windows it would be nice during the day but there wasn't enough light at night. With wooden tables and chairs, it is a family friend restaurant.
Would I come back? Only if somebody else books it in.
Great place to have a pub meal in a nice environment and great service. Steak night and Parma nights are great, and the sweet potato fries are delicious.
Looking for a good pub with great steaks in the area we usually head to Wayside or O'Connells. Catching up with s few mates we decided a more affordable option and tried Railway after not being here for years. Still presents like a old school Aussie pub including a pool table, alternative tunes, footy on the TV, top notch selection of beers and attentive service something sadly lacking south if the Yarra.
I had the special 650 gram Angus Ribeye with potatoes mustard and salad for about $50. One of the best steaks or meals I had. The boys had Scotch fillets which went down well and Kate had the Gnocchi. She said it was a good option but had they all had food envy when my meal arrived.
Get down there and support one of the best pubs this side of the river.
As a one-off I'd probably rate this a little lower, but a group of girlfriends and I have been coming every few weeks for nearly a year now and the extra half is for consistency. The first couple of visits there was hardly anyone in the restaurant, but food was good, if fairly standard, pub fare. That hasn't changed but word is out, and a booking is now absolutely required! Themed nights (parma, steak, etc) are particularly good value, and if you're in the mood for a sweet potato chip, look no further, this place delivers!
I dropped in here on my way home from a city appontment on a rainy Monday night. I found the staff to be super friendly & overall a very homely pub atmosphere, they even have resident teddy bears! Had to wait a while for my sweet potato chips but they were very busy, however they were well worth the wait, yummy & healthy. If i'm in the area again i would def drop in even just for a drink.
Truth be told I am a creature of habit. Once i'm onto a good thing I to stick to it...... Also a self-confessed Melbourne foodie I find it a real struggle because on the one hand I get FOMO and want to try ever meal on offer at every cafe/restaurant known to man. Then on the other hand I really hate a disappointing meal and sometimes play it safe by ordering old faithfuls. Steak night at Railway Hotel South Melbourne started off as a blip on the steak night radar of Melbourne. I planned to visit once and be on my merry way to the next in a week. Well it's been at least 12 weeks and I haven't strayed to another pub yet. Railway Hotel South Melbourne hits the spot and keeps the bank happy at $15. Every Wednesday you can fill up on 350g of Hopkins River Porterhouse char-grilled to perfection with sauce, sweet potato fries and salad. If you order mash and veggies you are a fool.....just saying. The sweet potato fries are some of the best going around :)
And if you are local the happy hour(s) are the best in the south! Half price for all tap beer. That's right! Craft tap beer for $12 a jug. Shut the front door! Ok i'm done gushing.....I think it's obvious they have won me over.
Ordered he beef brisket that came with sweet potato fries and slaw ($31). Also had the chatter platter ($38) to start.
Beef brisket was quite tasty however felt it was a bit overcooked.
Portion was decent, was full after. Service was also good. Overall decent feed for pub food.

I received a voucher from Zomato to use at Railway Hotel in South Melbourne and I was excited to go since pubs always have great vibes and I decided to take along the babies. We walked through the front door and found a bar and couldn’t see the dining area at all, so we walked outside to see if there were any other doors. Luckily, one of the staff ran out and called us back in and told us the dining area was around the back (how did he even know?? must be PSYCHIC!). It was quite roomy and had a relaxed feel to it. They even had a fireplace and an awesome outdoors area which was currently being reserved for a wedding dinner.
I had the Parma
I've had A LOT of Parmas in my time and Railway's stacks up with the best of them.
Fresh (non-packet) Parmas ALWAYS make the difference a little too much cheese and sauce but, who am I to complain??!! A great feed.
so glad to have found another iconic melbourne pub within walking distance of home! booking online was easy + from the minute we stepped inside the railway hotel the service was exceptional - friendly, personalised + delivered with flair! the bbq brisket was melt-in-your-mouth tender + the parma was just as a good aussie pub parma should be! thanks for having us guys, we will be back!
Everyone loves a good local and the Railway Hotel in South Melbourne has gone from strength to strength lately and it’s getting hard to cook from home when they can offer you a damn good meal every night of the week and some nights for a ridiculously good price. Mondays nights are $10 pastas, Tuesdays are $14 Parmas and Weds is $15 steaks… thats half the week covered for less than $50 each!
For anyone living in the inner south of Melbourne, meet your
new favourite local! A quaint little pub on the corner of Bank and Ferrars in
South Melbourne, the Railway Hotel South Melbourne is a not so hidden gem.
Every Friday night from 4pm – 7pm is Happy “Hour.” And boy will it make you
happy! $12 jugs of craft beer on tap including James Squire Chancer and White
Rabbit Dark Ale. Enough said.
Wednesday night is steak night and it gets busy so do
yourself a favour and make a booking! $15 for 350g of char-grilled porterhouse
with your choice of sauce, chips & side. With a personal hatred for crinkly
cut chips the sweet potato fries are my recommendation for your choice of
carbs. Of the three sauce options (pepper, mushroom and garlic butter) I prefer
the mushroom. Lastly the choice of salad versus veg. Well it really isn’t a
choice at all when the wandering foodie eye catches the pea, corn & carrot
mix no doubt microwaved before placed on other inexperienced patron’s plates.
Basically get the salad if you aren’t a fan of bland prefab microwaved
veg. Stick to medium-rare steak with
mushroom sauce, sweet potato fries & salad and you won’t regret it. Great
feed at a great price!
Great little pub that offer awesome specials all week around. The steak night is really good though make sure you book if in large groups. Also good place to have a few beers
Quick bite for lunch at the Railway on Friday. Nice relaxed atmosphere. Steak sandwich with crinkle cut chips was very tasty. Dogs were allowed in the beer garden!
Excellent food and drinks! They have some deals during the week which is awesome... Wednesday steak night for $15, pasta night for $10 (don't remember weekday, sorry)

Eaten here 3 times, twice in the pub and once in the dining area. Seriously if you could fault the food or drinks prices then? My only addition is instead of buying the bottle of Italian carbonated water at $10, yep, (Think it was San spell) just buy a bottle of beer or something else. Bit exy but I could be wrong.
Service 20/10 though when I was waiting to put my card through for payment at the counter I was looking through the menu for next weeks choice of desert and the waitress closed it and popped it on top of another stack of menus' in a like 'What are you looking at'. I opened it again and asked her about deserts. Who knows I may have wanted to order more and eat at the bar. Anyway. Top Classy Aussie establishment that take pride in what they deliver.
Great Pub!. Great place to hang out after work, beer on tap is affordable and the food is great!
Exactly what you want from a pub.. Pretty great pub in South Melbourne. Been in a couple of times with mates for different reasons but always love the parma they put out next to a couple of rounds of pool.
I'd definitely be more regular if I lived closer, it's just a shame that there's no direct transport from my house.
The food!. Nice to see a typical pub in South Melbourne - good atmosphere, food and outdoor deck. Many games have been played on their pool table. If only it was a little closer to home!
Best Gnocchi Ever. I went to the Railway for dinner with friends and will definitely be going back. As with many pub/bars in Melbourne, you never quite know what to expect of the food but Railway's food is amazing. I had the gnocchi which was incredible and my friends had a delicious looking steak. The staff are really friendly and we even enjoyed a round of pool and a few drinks after dinner.
Good venue (with only one gripe). Second visit to Railway Hotel in South Melbourne. Staff always professional and make you feel welcome. Went for drinks and lunch with a couple of friends. The burger and fries special at $10 was pretty tempting but I decided I've been eating too many burgers, so opted for a healthy, veggie alternative and chose the frittata. Unfortunately, it just wasn't up to scratch, especially for the $19 price-tag. Three bites and the frittata was gone, so small was the slice. The crispy bread was the size of biscuits and the tabbouleh serving came in a finger bowl, the same size as the hummus dip. Very paltry and I told the waiter so. He said he'd report it to the chef. I hope he did and they improve this meal. I could easily, very easily order a slice of frittata in any Melbourne cafe and I'd get something more substantial. I wish I'd taken a photo of that meal to show how small it was. Anyway, my two dining partners chose the fettuccine and the chicken parma. They were both solid servings and they were happy with their meals. Fortunately, we were still around at 4pm for happy hour and indulged in some half price beers. I'd definitely return. It's a great venue. They just need to improve that Vegetable Frittata.
New soul for traditional pub. Love this easy friendly pub. Don't let the original decor fool you - it's part of the charm of this original pub. Family friendly, great pub food, leafy courtyard, good value and very friendly service. We've made it our local!
Not to be mistaken for Port Melbourne's Railway Club Hotel, the Railway Hotel is one of a string of really rather good pubs on the Southern side of Ferrars Street . Its impressive beer selection is on a par with the nearby Palace , Wayside or O'Connell's hotels, yet this 1850's inn real ace is a unique charm that can't be bought in. For starters it's a bit of labyrinth, with front and back bars, open fire, pool table and pinball, non-invasive dining area and function room, and a surprising beer garden tucked behind the neighbouring house. The décor, around the long snaking bar, is fabulously old school with a mixture of art deco features, pressed metal and linoleum all old enough to have become cool again. Out front a sign proudly proclaims it a pokie-free zone. Renamed after Melbourne's second train line (now the 96 tram route) opposite, the pub originally licensed as The Napoleon Third , manages to be both a good honest boozer and an appealing place for the residents of the affluent
The Railway Hotel’s staff are super friendly; the beer garden is great; and they are clearly trying to step the food up a notch from the normal counter meals – although I think they’re more successful with the snacks and entree type things. There are some really positive reviews of their Wednesday Night Steak Nights on Urbanspoon where the steak is $14 – I think I’d love it a lot more for $14. I’ll have to come back and give it a go.
Any excuse to go on a burger rampage across Melbourne!! I love a good burger – who doesn’t? And we are pretty spoilt in Melbourne, so much so you can now buy The Burger Book and take the burger challenge – How many places can you visit? Excellent Dinning Experience.. We went for dinner tonight as the Entertainment Card had a special bonus offer at this place. Hence decided to try it.
From the moment we walked in to when we left it was an absolutely fantastic dinning experience. The gentleman ( Stacey) who showed us to our table was so pleasant and nothing was too much trouble for him. We were 4 of us We shred the calamari and Aranccini for entree. Both of which were very good. For mains 2 of us had the Brisket and it was yum so were the sweet potato fries that is came with, My husband had the eye fillet and and the other friend had Chicken Kiev both of which were excellent. To top it all the service was fantastic. For a pub I was pleasantly surprised. Stacey and the other gentleman who attended our table were both brilliant ( they could teach some of the fine dinning places a thing or two).
Overall a very good dinning experience. Thank you Stacey. We will return and highly recommend the Railway Hotel.

Try the brisket. Just saying
Yuuuuummmmm. All six of us ordered the BRISKET with the world's best, home made, giant sweet potato chips. Came with coleslaw and a magnificent sauce. Best service and waiters that actually understood my jokes. Can't wait to return. They are new in the Entertainment Book giving a free meal. We were still treated like royalty.
Best $15 steak you will EVER get. This is an awesome traditional pub no gaming or gambling. A pool table, an arcade machine and a pinball machine. Some great food here, Wednesday night is steak night!!! Great staff, great beer selection, great vibe.
Great pub!. Top bar staff, top steak sandwich, top soundtrack and a great selection of beer, what more could you ask for?
Very nice venue. Friendly staff. I took my family here on Saturday for dinner after a day in the city as another friend had recommended it. We were not disappointed.
The manager was incredibly helpful and accommodated us with our pram where there was little room already (We've been to places that leave it up to you to make space)
Our meals were out fairly quickly and all were very well made and tasty (Scotch Fillet mid rare, Chicken Wrap, Mini Parma and Kids Chicken Bites).
The staff in the bistro (sorry I missed your names) were great and my 18 month old had a ball interacting with them when they walked past.
All in all our experience was a nice one and we would happily go back when we're in the area next!
A real pub. An unreal pub! Whoever's chosen to upkeep and celebrate the original fitout of the pub is a genius, rather than modernise and gentrify like a lot of the others in the area tend to do. This is a refreshing approach! Now add, friendly, down to earth service, a brilliant old school soul soundtrack, friendly happy locals, vintage pinball, huge beer garden, a stunning front bar and classic pub meals - you've got a real winner. We couldn't have ordered more classic meals (Parma & Caesar) and really enjoyed them both.
The Railway Hotel has just got such a great vibe, that my wife and I found ourselves envious of the nearby residence who get this pub as their local! haha Keep up the great work
Faultless. Ten outta ten! Food, staff, music, atmosphere. Very happy.
Great food and service. The railway hotel has great food as well as amazing service. Would definitely recommend the steak and the fish and chips! Will definitely be back
Óld school pub with nice people behind the bar, and good, value for money food!. Been to this venue a couple of times now when visiting Melbourne. It has the atmosphere of a 'true local, it even has those old style taps for pouring the beer (and a good choice on tap), plus they had a good range of wine by the glass. If I lived in Melbourne it would definitely be my local.
Food is not pretentious but good, especially the slow cooked meat dish (sorry forgotten its name) and you don't have to be a kid to eat what would have to be the best homemade chicken nuggets in town (they don't call them nuggets), we polished off three bowls at our table as a starter before our mains. Now I have to find an excuse to be in Melbourne on a Monday as they advertise homemade pasta night, but that has to be my next visit!
Went here for a birthday dinner. Had the bangers and mash with the arancini balls for a starter. What can I say. Those sausages exploded (with flavour) into my mouth. The mash was perfect and I loved the onion gravy. The Arancini, well they are deep fried balls of heaven. Basically all the starters I've tried here are winners. Prices are very reasonable for the high quality of food. Great stuff
Festivus - Pub food that hits the spot. I recall the gourmet hamburger with special cheese and awesome chips
much needed with hangover
good burger
Old school pub. We sat in the beer garden which was beautiful. Great atmosphere. 4 of us dined and all were really happy. The menu is mouthwatering and there are plenty of good vego options as well which suited us. Great quality steak, and everything was fresh, not frozen, including the pasta and Parma. Fish and chips was amazing. Starters were delicious! Some of the best calamari we have ever had. You could tell the dips were made in-house - delicious. Great pub, highly recommend. Surprisingly good value and excellent quality food! The staff were really nice and friendly too. :) Will definitely be back.
Booked a table of 16 for Sunday lunch in the dining room with ages ranging from 6 - 72. The room was perfect; large, light, not noisy and family friendly . The service was professional and friendly. The menu had something for everyone and was reasonably priced. Everyone in the group enjoyed their meals (steak, brisket, pasta, parma). I had polenta dusted calamari (excellent) and the brisket which was melt in the mouth accompanied by roasted sweet potatoes and a genuine home-made coleslaw - yum. Small but good wine list. Great choice of beers on tap. Great pool table (it actually had a level surface!) and pinball machine for the little (and big kids) post lunch. It was perfect for a large family gathering like ours. Thanks!
I had lunch on 25 Jan 2014 with a small group and it was lovely. We booked a table in the beer garden which was open and airy with a fantastic big tree above. Our orders all came out at the same time which is excellent service. Nothing worse than people getting their meal then waiting until everyone has theirs to eat. Food was great. I ordered the chicken Parma with chips & salad and demolished it all!! The only negative comment I will say is that for a larger person with hips & a bum like me the chairs in the beer garden were too small and I ended up having to sit on the edge of my chair the whole time ad it was the only bit I fit into!! Will definitely go back there as the food and service were great.
$15 Steak Night - Wednesday. Decent steak for $15 bucks! Can't complain about that. Ours were cooked a little more than what we asked. Medium rares were closer to medium. Would go for rare next time.
Lunch today .. Group of 12... Fantastic "old-style" pub... No frills but good old fashioned service, hearty meals, reasonable prices. Happy for us to bring b'day cake and played up at no extra cost. A rare find. Will definitely return.
This is the place!. The "Rails" in South Melbourne continues to be an essential destination. Old school, good food, cold beer selection, awesome staff, 'nuff said. I'll be the one sitting by the open fire...
The Rails is not your average pub. It's old school charms and character blow you away! Awesome local, where the bartenders know my name and drink as soon as I walk in. Wednesday night steaks are ace, and pie night on monday is becoming a lazy tradition - no way am I cooking when I can get a meal for $14! Perfect for winter, with hearty meals (if you like blue cheese get the gnocchi for sure), open fires and heaters for the smokers... Love it!
Good pub meals, but don't go there on a busy night!! Stick to beers and bar snacks to avoid the wait
Went in to the Railway Hotel with friends last Wednesday for their steak night & I'll be returning tonight because it was that damn good. Cheap, awesome steak & a great old style pub. May even take advantage of their 2 for 1 import beers on Friday night too. Couldn't recommend highly enough!!!
Ahh the Rails. I recently returned to the Railway Hotel after many years of patronage and having only been absent from moving to St Kilda. Thank God for the Railway!
Unlike so many of the pubs southside, the good old Rails has kept it's old school charm and warmth while still keeping up with the times in areas of food, drink and music. If you haven't been to the Railway this is the time to give it a go. A beautiful, and heated, beer garden, open fires, original wood and pressed metal decor and not a hint of arrogance. I am very sad to hear of the passing of the world's best pub cat Puss.
I caught up with old mates in the side bar overlooking the street. Bottles of wine and ongoing entrees made for a great day. (Can never get enough of the saganaki). The staff even put on some requested classics for us to make it a great reunion. Thank you for not changing Railway, definitely a pub where everyone knows your name. Cheers!
We really like this pub. Great staff, good beer selection on tap, great beer garden. But we ordered the Meatballs from the bar menu the other day(and iv eaten many a good meatball!) and they were sadly SO bad we could hardly eat them. The sauce was good - it was the 'meat' ball we has issue with, it was a weird rubbery texture-made of goodness knows what-but it was truly awful-left a nasty flavour in your mouth. What was worse-for $15 you only got 3 meatballs which seemed a bit stingey-only made worse by the fact they were unedible! So I'm hoping we were just unlucky with this dish, maybe something went wrong with quality control in the kitchen....but when we return...we won't be ordering those again!
Wednesday night $15 steak nights are yummy!! Cheap drinks.. Great outdoor area.. Good for all ages!!
Just a great pub with an old, warm feel to it. None of that wanky gastro sh!t. Try the steak, 2 thumbs up. Will be back.
Great food, great beergarden, shame the garden is only open till 11pm. Perfect on a hot summer night!
Beautiful cut of porterhouse on Wednesday steak night but unfortunately over cooked (ask for rare if wanting medium rare). Got a little excited with the garlic on the vegies & dining room a little freezing but small issues for a great venue with open fires (if in the right room for a drink)& plenty of options on tap.
We have just finished our meals what more can I say but awesome!
Yep, totally agree... You need to book on Wednesday, as the Railway steak night is awesome. But don't confuse it with the suburbanites heading to the Railway Club in Port Melb - that place is a shocker!
The Railway Hotel provided a very nice meal in a good eating environment. I had the steak (for only $14 on Wednesdays steak night) and enjoyed it. Service was first rate, though I'd have liked the option to have veggies instead of salad, but it wasn't allowed. Other that that gripe, it was a good experience and I would go back!
Hidden gem. This place has a fantastic beer garden and the food's pretty yummy too! Only ordered snacky type things, not mains, but I'll be back to try out the main menu!
Friends brought me here 2 years ago when I first visited Melbourne. That visit helped me decide to move here for good. Now I've made it back and it's better than I remembered. I'll be back ;)
Great Pub. Was at the railway only recently for a Xmas function and it was awesome. We were out in the beer garden, which was really big and had its own Bar. It was a hot day, the drinks were ice cold and the food was just Amazing!! I would recomment the Railway for any function, I also had a good look around inside and there are different spaces for different size functions. I will definately be having my next function there!! Will also be back during summer for a few bevvies and a feed in the beer garden!
Great food. Free wifi. Awesome bar. I tripped on the carpet twice. What's not to like!? Loved it. The courtyard looked rather purrty too but was too cold to venture out to. There were ppl sitting out there though so im guessing there was some sort of heating contraption.
What a secret the Railway Hotel is. Great food in a great environment. Free WIFi means a lot of locals come in for food and to surf the net. Lunch & Dinner from $12.00
