Best afternoon high tea i have had in a while. The staff are exceptional and the food was great as well as the lighting and gentle music in the background.
Had a fantastic experience at straits cafe tonight the servers Michael and Grace were delightful, had no issue answering questions and made sure everything was perfect asked if anything was needed and were happy to recommend dishes. I was very pleased to have gone with what was recommended and would happily dine again before my holiday is over.
We had high tea using a scoopon voucher. High tea was fantastic! So much food, unlimited sparkling & tea or coffee!
Staff were fantastic - our servers Michael, Richard & Alam were very good. Wouldn't hesitate to return!
2nd visit for high tea all I can say is service is outstanding food fresh and tasty now looking forward to making a 3rd visit.
The cafe is lower ground but nice atmosphere. The place is quite clean and nice looking. The staff are very friendly and professional. I got to try their high tea from groupon deal. They serve traditional scones crispy and warm with jam and cream. They refilled the tea and coffee.

This is the second time we have attended high tea at the Straits Cafe using the Groupon voucher ($59 for two persons) and both times have been quite satisfied.
Ribbon sandwiches, traditional scones served with jam and chantilly cream and an array of slices and sweets all served on a lovely three tier. Everyone is welcomed with sparkling wine on arrival and bottomless tea and coffee is served throughout the seating.
Service is always attentive, making sure our glass of water is filled and always asked if we wanted more tea and coffee when we are running low. You definitely do not go hungry in this seating and will usually walk out in a sugar overload.
Having gone to many high teas around Melbourne, this is a pretty standard and entry level afternoon tea. However, still great value for money with the use of the Groupon voucher and would recommend to those wanting to experience this without having to fork out too much money.
What a delight! Very impressed with the service from calling in to book, to the friendly greeting upon arrival and attentive service throughout the afternoon. The high tea itself was beautifully presented with a selection of sandwiches, scones and a variety of cakes ..... all delicious! I would highly recommend!
I came here with a friend for high tea to celebrate her birthday and we were beyond impressed by the effort they made to make her birthday special. Near the end of our high tea (literally when we had one cupcake left), they came with a balloon and a special birthday platter, sang Happy Birthday and even presented my friend with a gift to take home. This is the best birthday experience I've ever encountered at a restaurant. The staff didn't know that but my friend is here on a 3 month secondment from the UK so she was away from her partner, family and friends and this really made her day. Before we walked in, we were a bit underwhelmed by the hotel signs on the road. However, the driveway to the hotel entrance is beautiful and I loved the lobby and the elegant decor inside. The restaurant is also elegantly decorated with a modern touch. The staff are lovely and the service was excellent. When the 3-tiered platter arrived, I was a bit worried that we would leave hungry but we were so full at the end! The ribbon sandwiches were tasty and I liked the different fillings that they provided. The scones were some of the best I have had in Australia. They were delicious and the consistency was spot on; crunchy on the outside but moist and on the inside. Not clotted cream but then again, I've never been to a place that had it in Australia. Chocolate covered strawberries were amazing. Macarons were nice. The mini treats were beautiful and I liked what looked like a cheesecake but tasted more like a panna cotta. However, the cupcakes were a disappointment. Even though they were moist, the flavours were strange and the toppings tasted artificial. I was also disappointed by the fact that they didn't have a selection of teas that we could choose from. They served tea from a jug and I'm pretty sure they were bagged teas (maybe Twinings?) rather than loose tea. It was unlimited though and you had the choice of tea or coffee. All in all, it was an incredible experience and at $29.50 per person (with Groupon), it was more than worth it. Oh and did I mention, we also got a glass of sparkling wine each? Thank you Straits Cafe, we had such an amazing time!
Nice place at under ground floor of rendevous hotel melbourne but they have no (not less or a few, 0) cheese and olives. It’s normal for locals but must be kept in mind.
Otherwise you can find tasty but limited food. (Ex: just scrambled egg, no other types.)
Found this on Groupon and was very pleased. Ribbon sandwiches were delicious, scones were very nice and the sweets were plentiful. Service was very good. Coffee and tea were okay because it was earlier prepared in a big jug but overall really nice high tea experience.
I've been here twice for high tea with my girlfriends. We got Groupon vouchers which were $25 pp and it was definitely great price value. It includes one glass of Prosecco, unlimited tea and coffee and a tray of scones, sandwiches and sweet little treats as in the photo. One of those trays to two people which is plenty. Everything tastes great but my favourites were the scones. Service was very attentive too and they even let us extend the voucher when one of the girls couldn't make it.
Had a nice hi-tea with some friends. Good portions and with a glass of bubbly. Service was fairly good. Only bummer was a strict time limit in the cafe. So not a place to sit longer than 2 hours if you want to hang out longer.
High tea was great- a generous serving of fresh, delicious sandwiches, scones and small desserts. The staff were very friendly and helpful too.
What a lovely dining room. Good wait staff. We did enjoy our meals. Nasi goreng was a good size with two chicken skewers and two chicken drummets, but the rice was lacking in flavour. Hubby had steak with peppercorn sauce. It was slightly overcooked and a bit dry but he loved the sauce and the side of fries. However some vegetables with the steak was sadly missing (it was not made clear that he had to order them separately at around $8 extra). Large enough portions for the price but again having to pay extra for some vegetables to have with your $36 steak is a bit rich! A good venue for a romantic dinner date.
High tea for two at The Rendezvous Hotel's Straits cafe! Beautiful setting and ambience here today. Had such a wonderful time - food was delightful and service was absolutely IMPECCABLE!!! Staff were oh so friendly and constantly refilling coffee and tea. Highly rate and recommend high tea and the dining experience in general here
Ambience was of an old world men's club and not to my liking much at all but that aside the dining was pretty damn decent. Service and kitchen to table times could be way better given it was busy but once on the fork, both the main of a lamb and beetroot salad and the mango and coconut dessert were easy eating. Maybe just a little more beetroot wouldn't have gone astray as the sweetness really added to the overall flavours. I strongly recommended the 3 Brothers Shiraz if it still on the list. Very decent drop.
Enjoyed afternoon tea here with the family using a living social voucher. Presented with a 3 tier stand, top tier were scones which was served warm. Scones were decent, there was whipped cream, butter and a lovely orange marmalade on the table but strawberry and raspberry jam available on request. Middle tier were a selection of sweet: pistachio/strawberry macarons which tasted artificial but macaron shells was well made, another family member had a chocolate one which was good. Small Christmas puddings were also served, there were fruit packed so if you prefer lots of dried fruits, this would be right up your alley compared to the traditional Christmas pudding which is even mix of dried fruit and pudding. Vanilla cupcake which was alright, was a touch dry. Chocolate cupcake was lovely and dense with a nice chocolate ganache topping. There was also another dessert which I think was a flourless almond orange cake topped with lemon curd which was pleasant. Bottom tier were sandwiches: egg, tuna, cucumber and ham. Bread was nice and soft and fillings were good. Sparkling champagne served on arrival, a good selection of "La Maison De The" tea and Vittoria coffee served. Anna, our main wait staff member was EXCEPTIONAL, a prime example of excellent service one would receive at a fine dining establishment, ensured our tea pots and glasses of water constantly replenished and checking up with our table every so often in a non intrusive manner. Overall, good value if you're going on a voucher, food was decent with desserts perhaps being a tad sweet but Anna's service warrants the 5.0 rating!
Came with a family of four using voucher, very quite Saturday afternoon, just two tables have been occupied, Sofie provided a very good service to us and selection of the little sweet treats and ribbon sandwiches are nice! Would recommend to friends!
Gastrology recently joined Mr Arthur Kiong, Chief Executive Officer of Far East Hospitality ( FEH ) for a sumptuous Singaporen Degustation luncheon at Rendezvous Hotel created by Executive Chef William Soh, who was flown in from Singapore to prepare the delicious menu.
Went to this place as we wanted to treat our overseas guests with Australian steaks! We had no expectation so were pleasantly surprised with both the food and the service. We all enjoyed a beautiful meal.
What a delightful experience Straits Cafe is. The staff (Yana) were consummate professionals and the food exceeded all expectations. Certainly worthy of a higher approval rating. Overall Straits comes highly recommend and will appeal to those who prefer a more intimate dining experience.
Came for dinner using an our-deal voucher which included a bucket of prawns, two steaks and a bottle of wine. The ambience of the restaurant is great and classy and we enjoyed the prawns. Both my bf and I wanted medium cooked steaks but mine somehow came out medium rare. I'm not sure if this was the chef's problem or whether the waiter did not tell the chef the right preference, but I was a bit let down because I love steak but I can't handle medium rare too well. My bf's one was quite good however and he enjoyed his. I do recommend coming here for a meal because it's affordable (~$30 per main) and great for an intimate date or relaxing night.
Great service, good food and perfect evening.. Went for dinner with a group of 16 for three people's 21sts. Managed to get an awesome deal on TravelZoo whereby we were given the choice of an entree, main and a dessert to share, as well as a complimentary drink. We weren't expecting much, seeing that we had gotten such a bargain (there's usually always a catch), so we had pretty low expectations. To begin the night, we had a choice of a glass of champagne, house wines & spirits or any soft drink. For food, I had the marinated squid on a bed of lentils as my entree and it was delicious! Squid perfectly cooked and the sauces went well together. Next was the main for which I had the corn-fed chicken on a bed of mash. It was slightly small but due to the mash, pretty filling. My friends had the steak which were mostly a little over from what they had requested (served medium-well although ordered medium-rare), but was still pretty nice. Lastly came the desserts to share, my friend & I shared a vanilla brulee which was nice, a big portion for two people which was good to see. By the end of the night, we were pretty stuffed from the good food, ambience and helpful & patient service provided. (We're a pretty big & loud bunch).
All in all, had a memorable evening which surpassed all expectation. :)
Nice. NIce place for dinner, took mum here and she loved it.
