Review Burma Lane - Melbourne

Chris Bing
Interesting 8-dish menu with the exception of the turkey spring rolls, presumably an attempt at an Xmas twist, but a failure. Wine recommendation was excellent. Tables too small for the amount of food they serve at once, should have thought that through! Another annoyance was charging us for two bottles of water after replacing one which wasn't empty with a full one we didn't ask for.

Super service and clean flavours. Each dish was unique enough to make it very memorable. I have had better cheeseburger spring rolls but everything was enjoyable
Aaron
A top quality Modern Australian Asian Fusion food. My top pick is their pork belly! Crispy and delicious through and through. Their biggest let down was their chicken curry which was no different than a street side food store. But hey, still good!
GOODTIMES
Burma lane is a fantastic modern Melbourne restaurant with food inspiration from around the world. Located in an iconic Melbourne laneway it really is a hidden gem. Food was delicious, priced mid-high end. The five spice pork belly is a real standout. The cocktails are fantastic, we made our way though majority of the list with each being better than the last. Well worth a visit.

Didn't get a chance to visit its well-known sister-restaurant Red Spice Road yet but no doubt it's just as good if not better. The ambience was impeccable especially with this beautiful painting on the wall and service was friendly and prompt. All the dishes were tasty - full of flavour but not overpowering to the point where ingredients lose their tastes. Shan Tofu, Lamb Shank Curry, and Caramelised Pork Belly stood out out of all. Pork Belly was crispy outside but succulent inside and lamb shank was so soft that it fell apart as I dug my fork into it. Went wonderfully well with rice! My personal favourite was surprisingly Shan Tofu - never knew tofu could taste like that. It had this distinctive herby starchy flavour which was very addicting. Only thing I didn't like about the set menu was Chai Panna Cotta - not that it tasted bad but just not a fan of its pudding-like texture. Overall, with 50% off deal- definitely worth it!

The food was average here. I was really looking forward to the pork belly, but it was a bit tough. I would say the eggplant salad was my favourite. Food was surprisingly filling.

Burma Lane is offering bottomless brunch every Saturday from 12pm-2pm, and of course I had to try it. Unlimited boozy refreshments? I’m in! Choose from mimosa, prosecco, red or white wine, or go all the way with the luxury package that includes Louis Roederer champagne. As part of the bottomless brunch menu, you’ll get two entrees, two mains and two salads to go with your alcohol-fuelled lunch. The wagyu cheeseburger spring rolls was such a treat to eat – crisped and did indeed oozed the meaty and cheesy taste of a cheeseburger within. The betel leaf with barramundi and chillies acted as a palate cleanser, light and refreshing. For the mains, we had the beef curry and the famous five spice pork belly. Having had the pork belly at their sister restaurant before, it is just as amazing as I remembered. Sticky, sweet and smoky, with tender chunks of pork belly with crisped skin, this will blow your mind. The salads were a bit light on flavour, and the stars of the meal were definitely the mains.

Food was delicious and the menu was creative. One of the interesting dishes on the menu was the cheeseburger spring rolls. Other stand out dishes were the chicken wings, beef ribs and the chai pannacotta.

Went there 2 out of my 3 night stay in Melbourne. For was superb on both nights but the pork belly was outstanding. Wait staff and manager were all friendly and welcoming. Will recommend to all my Melbourne friends.

My husband and I went for a special anniversary meal . From start to finish, the service , the lovely waitresses and the atmosphere all made for a fab experience . The food was exquisite . The barramundi and the crispy chicken curry amazing and the green papaya salad 🥗 was so refreshing we also had lovely entrees to wet our appetite the pea fritters and lamb potato cakes and the wagyu cheesburger dumplings all so delicious . Drinks were a bit expensive but you are in one if the most liveable cities in the world 🌎 We will be back to try the Monday night 2 for 1 banquet Thanks 🙏

Absolutely loved this! Went here for our anniversary dinner, had the $89 banquet and every dish was divine! Perfect portions, perfect spacing between lots so nothing went cold. Warm and comforting environment. Worth every buck!

Excellent food and service. Had our wedding dinner held in Burma Lane and it was outstanding. Guests can't stop raving about the food (massaman beef, Yummo!), staff were very accommodating and all smiles. Shout out to Matt, Jaimi and Anthony. You, guys, are amazing! Will definitely visit again - Clarice and Weese

Beautiful food. I sampled the Feed Me menu which was such an awesome mix of the restaurant offerings. My fave were the pea fritters and the Pork! The dessert was underwhelming though just not enough contrasts in flavours.

What a beautiful night, staff were fantastic and the food, well we ordered the Banquet to be shared by 2.....beautiful food, awesome flavours and so so much. XXX

Comfortable, quiet restaurant with a decent, tasty, asian fusion lunch banquet, good place to catch up or have a work lunch. Had the five spice pork belly and the slow cooked lamb shoulder for mains, would definetely have that again. Finished with the lemongrass (deconstructed) cheesecake - didnt look great but tasted great. Service was good but as expected since we were only one of two tables at the time.

A FAVE FOR ASIAN FEASTING!

This is one of our fave places to go to the city. We love what's on offer on their menu and love the ambience of the place.

We went on the weekend and ordered Shan Tofu, Duck Donut, Smoked Chicken Wings, DIY Salmon Tacos and our usual favourite The Five Spice Pork Belly.

We would normally give a 5, however the pork belly really let us down this time. Whilst the skin was crispy, the pork itself was tough and dry and unfortunately no amount of dressing/sauce made it enjoyable.

Regardless, we still enjoyed our overall meal and visit and would return again.

Came here for their bottomless brunch on Saturday. I was really impressed with the wall arts inside the restaurant. So amazing. The brunch started with beef spring rolls and barramundi betel leaf, both were pretty good! Then we had beef curry, pork belly with rice as main course. They were flavourful! However, we think the salads could be better. They lacked some flavour.

The staff was really nice and attentive!

We were actually looking for somewhere else but gave up and walking back up Little Collins St we came across this place. The menu looked interesting so we walked in. And it was terrific! Interesting food - interesting ambiance - interesting wine/cocktail list. We had a starter each (barramundi betel leaf & scallop), then a couple of entrees (chicken marsala taco & king fish ceviche) to share and finally a larger plate (chicken green curry) - it was all good. I realised that this is a sister restaurant to Red Silk road which is always awesome so great to find another place doing interesting asian food so well.
Annie
Lovely restaurant, with a really nice ambience. The food was all delicious- we found the entrees to be our favorite course of the night, especially the spring rolls.

Worth visiting.

Booked Burma Lane for my friends birthday. Didn’t know what to expect as it was our first time trying Burmese Fusion. Staff were super friendly and attentive. We were given great recommendations and suggestions as it was 40+ degrees outside. Every dish was flavourful and delicious. The cocktails were impeccable. We loved the interior and the vibes. I forgot to mention in the booking note that it was my friends birthday but staff overheard me and took their own initiative by surprising us with candles on the Chai Pana Cotta . I would highly recommend and definitely come back to try everything else ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Really awesome and delicious food. Service was attentive and friendly too. Value for money. Will definitely come back again

Explosion of flavour and great service.

Burma lane is class, firstly I loved the wall art And the vibe is really cool.

I enjoyed all the dishes. However, my friend is vegetarian so no meat dishes were ordered but that did mean I tried something I wouldn’t. But I will be back to try many more dishes.

We ordered:
The tofu
Barramundi betal leaf
Pickled tea leaf salad
Kung poa cauliflower

All fantastic and seasoned really well. Flavours were different for all the dishes with kicks of chilli here and there.

DELICIOUS 😄

Really nice food, great service, and contemporary dining room. Not as adventurous as some other Asian fusion places but really great combinations of flavours and textures. Well worth a visit.
Momojojo
Their food is amazing! We ordered duck donuts, crispy barramundi with pipi, braised short ribs with bao and cauliflower. Trust me, they are really yummm :)

We were here on a great mid week discount deal, but the food is so good it was worth the price before discount. There were very interesting flavours like wagyu cheeseburger spring rolls, lamb tartare, salmon taco, duck donut and 5 spice pork belly. The plates were all cleaned at the end. Nice decor tucked in a quiet side street of CBD. A gem.

A great asian infusion restaurant. I loved the DIY taco and the pork belly. The service is impeccable. Serving portion is very generous, which I enjoyed very much.

We came here for lunch with our colleagues. We shared the 29$ per person banquet. It started with beef and bettle leaf as well as Tofu with raddish and lemon juice taste. Later we had rice with chicken and vegetable as well as salad consisting of charred corn. Overall I enjoyed the dishes and service and I recommend visiting here. However , no extraordinary meal here so I cannot give it a 5/5.

None of the dishes are Burmese/Myanmar cuisine. It's a generic Asian restaurant.

That aside, menu was pretty empty. We got the feed me for dinner on a Wednesday night and some of the hot dishes came out cold. 1 or 2 of the dishes were not bad, but most of them were missing a flavour (most of the dishes were tangy only with no other flavour to it). Dishes were also inconsistent. 1 person's serve of pork belly was delicious while another's was too dry to eat. We didn't come out stuffed and actually went somewhere else for dessert

It's more expensive with smaller serving sizes than the other popular Asian fusion restaurants.

Service - wait staff got a little annoyed because we used our Citibank benefits at the restaurant. Wait staff were really friendly and chatty with the other tables though, so I guess don't use your Citibank there?

Overall, had some average food, with a pork belly that was pretty decent. Range wasn't great, most of the other dishes were poor, serving size doesn't match it's price and it's price was way higher than it should be. Not too sure why the ratings are so high.

Had the $55 feed me for lunch today and it was yum. Started with chicken wings, doughnut and fish taco for entree..beef ribs, Kung pao chicken and pork belly for main and tea panacotta for dessert. All dishes were great tasting and my favourite was the beef ribs! Will be back when feel like a big Asian meal.

Overall score: 19/25 or ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
in 5 words: classy cbd asian fusion restaurant
*
Review: we started with cocktails, which was pricey ($22) but delicious nonetheless. The 50 shades of earl grey is highly recommended - am a fan of anything with gin and yuzu!

The shut up & feed me ($79pp) was especially worth it with the 50% deal. Shan tofu was interesting. Really enjoyed the chicken wings (nice Korean spice added to it) and five spice pork belly. You can’t fault the flavour of these dishes, they are reminiscent of Sister restaurant red spice road. Wish they gave more of the pork belly though

the lamb shank and charred corn salad were okay - really liked the mash that came with it. Lamb meat could have been more flavourful. Chai pannacota was a delicious end to our banquet, and I loved the strong tea aftertaste with my earl grey sorbet.

All in all, this place might be pricey for the portions (without the discount). But what you get in return is outstanding service and lovely ambience. Recommended for celebrations.
*
Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ambience: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Presentation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Price: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

An amazing journey of some sensational food. Delicious and highly recommend to anyone who loves a bit of adventure with food. My favourite was the soy braised beef short rib, pickled cucumber, chilli jam, coconut, bao.
Little Bit Of Everything
Finally managed to visit Burma Lane for dinner, it was long overdue. It was a perfect Saturday night dinner. Amazing interiors, those high ceilings elevate the space to a whole different level.

Quite a few options on the menu to choose from, if in doubt go for the Feed me option. For entrees, we got Gochujang & Honey roasted Salmon Taco and Duck, Shitake, water Chestnut Doughnut. It was disintegrated Taco with all the elements on the plate, both the entrees tasted sensational. The doughnut was soft and moist filled with deliciously cooked Duck. Before we started with the mains we ate Snapper Ceviche as palette cleanser. For mains, Charred Corn and Five-spice Pork Belly. Charred corn was definitely my favourite dish, simple smart flavours put together on a plate, the corn had a beautiful Charred taste which amplifies all the flavours. Pork Belly just melts, it was spiced and cooked to perfection. We were pretty full by then but had to try one of their desserts and they were nice enough to let us take one home. We got the passionfruit and dark chocolate sphere, I wish we bought two of those because sharing one when it's so deliciously made gets hard. Each dish was cooked with care and served generously. Great customer service and very relaxed ambiance.

Delicious food in the heart of the city, Burma Lane has a lot going for it. Firstly, it's a beautiful venue. Quite a large space with gorgeous art and lighting, comfortable seating and a glamorous atmosphere. We were looked after by fab staff who were great at offering suggestions for us to try. There is also a good wine and drinks list, and fantastic Asian spins on classic cocktails.

The food however is the standout. From delicious stir frys, to the most mouth watering crispy pork belly we've ever had. Salty and crunchy crackle, but tender and tasty meat makes this the hero dish. We also loved the bao, as this is the perfect sharing dish, and helps lighten the mood as it's fun assembling your own bao.

I really can't fault Burma Lane in any way, as everything met our expectations and more. It delivered on ambience, food and service, and you can't really ask for more than that.

We went there with my wife ,The flavors were nice and service was friendly and welcoming,However unfortunately the portions were very small .With the restaurants with similar price range ,That was the smallest portions I have ever seen .We ordered a ceviche , beef ribs ,chicken wings and panacota .the flavors were nice but the value was not there .What a shame !

Went here for my mother's birthday last week and had a great time. We had the bigger of the two banquet meals and it was so much food! Stand outs were the duck donuts (you have to try them, you won't find them anywhere else!) and the short rib. Obligatory honorary mention to the pork belly which, like at Red Spice Road, is delicious. We swapped the dessert for the one offered on the other banquet menu (earl grey pana cotta) and it was also excellent. The wine selection was very nice, but on the small side. On the whole it was delicious but probably too rich/salty for my tastes. With a banquet that big they needed to balance out the salt. Also there was a massive draft from the front door which meant I had to keep my jacket on during the meal (it was an outrageously cold night though). The staff were lovely and I might come back to have a slightly smaller meal.

The tapas are ok but now amazing. Among the ones wr order I like the lamb pie the most. The salmon taco is deconstructed and you need to DIY. Wasn't explained on the menu. I find it a let down. The pork belly main is really nice. The others are so so. Drinks are good but again noe amazing.

We always go to their sister restaurant “Red Spice Road”. We decided to give Burma Lane ago. The has a beautiful decorations. You could sit down on either downstairs or upstairs. Both level have few staffs who always ready to help you. We tried the one of the banquet menu “shut up and feed me”. 8 courses plus desserts! I’ve never tried a duck doughnuts before, Have you? If you want to explore more about Asian foods, this is a good place to go
Essie
Wow wow wow! Hunger aside, Burma Lane did not disappoint one bit. Every single dish was delicious. Stand out dishes - cauliflower & dumplings, pork belly and corn salad. Definitely returning and soon!

Thanks to the amazing @burmalane for the constant wine top ups & delicious Asian fusion food 🥘at the LAUNCH of their BOTTOMLESS BRUNCH 💖🌟🤤

This mouthwatering curry was Devine ~ full of flavour and soaked / coated the rice so well! @melbrunchqueen And I enjoyed a romantic table setting for 2 whilst it looked like a crazy wild raining storm was brewing on the outside. Where else other than @burmalane Would I rather be?

The ambiance is impeccable & one word to describe this place, classy! Great wine selections, an overall stunning space in the heart of the CBD! If you love Asian fusion & endless top ups of wine then this place is your jam!

We came to try the new Bottomless Brunch and it was so exciting to try something different to the standard breakfast options at other bottomless events around town!

The food is very unique, everything was delicious and the staff were very prompt with refilling our drinks! Standout dishes were the chicken curry, five spice pork belly and the fried chicken wings.

The only dish we didn't enjoy was the pickled tea leaf salad, which was just a bit too unusual for our taste. But there's so much other food to be enjoyed, we still walked out very full. We had the $79 option with bottomless prosecco, pinot gris and shiraz and with the unlimited top-ups and generous portions of food, it's reasonable value!

Worth trying if you're over the standard eggs benny brunches everywhere else!
Robin
What a memorable meal!

Brilliant flavours, highly creative ideas for food. Busy with an excellent vibe. They have a sharing menu which is great as it allows you to try more things. Beef brisket bao was one of the best dishes we have tried during our 3 weeks holiday in Australia. We would highly recommend, perfect for curious holiday makers, couples or celebrations as is truly special

Went for dinner with friends, service was slow but was served well, ordered the salt and pepper squid and duck shitake donut, the squid was very soft, slightly over salted, plating was very nice however was still pretty hungry afterwards. Had the duck donut as well, the jam was delicious, not much duck in the filling and couldn’t taste much of the mushrooms. Overall pricey and left hungry but kinda expected that with fancy dining places like this
Aisling Murray
The food here is ok, but nothing special, especially compared to that of sister restaurant Red Spice Road & other great Asian fusion restaurants nearby (dishes are overpriced). What really bothered us though was the poor service (abrupt waitress & waiting 45mins in between entree & main course) and the fact that our mains were cold on arrival. Also: nothing about this menu is Burmese from what I can tell!? I’d describe our dishes as USA / South American / Sichuan influences - which is great - but....??
Mad Dawg
When we entered the restaurant, it was not excessively busy on a Friday night. We were quickly seated however we waited a fair amount of time to be served. I ordered the crispy skin chicken. The texture was spot on and i enjoyed the crunch of the cashews. However, i felt that the heirloom tomatoes were excessively sour and acidic.
Thebrunchgirls
We tried out the new bottomless brunch this weekend and it exceeded all expectations. 6 dishes and bottomless Prosecco, Pinot Gris or Shiraz for $79 which is such good value. The 6 dishes are full of flavor and generous portions. The Prosecco is also very good! Such a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon with friends! We will be back! Thanks Burma Lane!

As a huge fan of the 'feed me' concept we went here for their Shut up and Feed Me dinner menu for $72 each.

The food was pretty consistently great. Although unlike the likes of chin chin I wasn't completely full as some of the plates were very small.

The restaurant is beautiful, very big and grand. Although as the restaurant was quiet when we went with many spare tables, we were surprised to be sat upstairs next to the toilets!

Burma Lane is opened by the guys from Red Spice Road and they have Monday specials which was I think buy one get one free on the set menus. We went on Monday, not knowing that there is actually on special, but they still gave us the special which is nice of them!

We got the linger longer lunch set, which includes 2 entrees and 4 shared mains for two people. The entrees came which was tofu and chicken wings.

The Shan tofu w tomato, radish and peanut was a bit too sour for my liking, but the chicken wing was nice, though I didn’t really think it had a huge Smokey flavour, it was more sweet than anything.

The mains came and they have the Red Spice Road favourite pork belly, but it only came in two blocks (one for each person). I wish they give me one less mains so I can have more pork belly because that was good.

The wok tossed veggies were ok, but it’s something I could probably make at home so I am not incredibly excited by it.

The chicken curry didn’t have a lot of punchy flavours and the chicken was a bit dry.

The salad had lots of crunchy stuff in it... I like crunchy normally but this is way too crunchy for me.

Overall I think the flavour profiles and textures is not for me. I would rather go back to Red Spice Road.
Gini De Alm
Food was yummy and staff were lovely; but not worth the price you pay for the size of the portions you get. Paid a lot for a very small portion and walked out very hungry and disappointed.
Iceman
Went to Burma Lane recently for a team lunch and was extremely disappointed, especially after the venue came highly recommended to me.

Lunch sized meals are served at dinner sized prices. I ordered the salt and pepper squid, which at $22 for the size of a small entree, was disappointing. The squid was too tough to eat, and my colleague discovered a bug in her meal.

Overall Burma Lane isn’t any where near worthy of your hard earned and you’d do well to spend it elsewhere I’m sorry to say.
Madam Cranky Pants
I have been wanting to try out the sister restaurant to Red Spice Rd for quite some time now. Last night we dined & had the Tasting menu First Name Always, Surname Hungry for 85pp.

When entering we were greeted by a bubbly staff member who seated us at our table. The place was beautifully decorated, loved the paintings that were done on the walls.

We started with entree's consisting of Duck Donuts delicious with the sour cherry sauce, Betel Leaf Green Pea Fritter was tasty, the Cured Salmon on Nori Cracker was my favorite went down a treat wish I had more. Smoked Chicken Wings, sesame ok but not my favorite.

The main event then comes along the Coconut Poached Chicken, Papaya, apple, fennel, Vietnamese mint & peanut salad was unctuous. The Five Spice Black Pepper Caramel Ginger Pork Belly was fantastic.

Now I am not a trout person but I believe I may be a convert with they way it was prepared with Fennel-parsnip & vanilla puree, mushroom, kaffir foam & coconut, another I have died and gone to food heaven moment.

I was disappointed with the Braised Beef Brisket with Chu Hou & Daikon, Pickle although the taste was lovely we found the brisket to be dry. Another salad Pickled Tea Lead, Cabbage, Peanut Crispy bean & tomato salad was nice.

Dessert, I don't usually eat out but OMG was this awesome, Tea Time: A Chai Pannacotta yum yum. China Jasmine Jelly yum yum, Earl Grey Sorbet yummy yum, Milk Gel & Tea Crumble. My only complaint about this is that I ate it way to quickly, not overly sweet and such a nice way to end an overall spectacular Menu.

Thank you to the staff that served us on the evening you were all lovely :)
Hungry Koala
Service was great, food was delicious, especially the pork belly. Cooked to absolute perfection, the only improvement would be to increase the amount of garnish - this will help cut through the richness somewhat.
Catnapping
We tried Burma Lane on a Thursday evening while staying at a nearby hotel. The decor is modern and inviting but we found the background music a little annoying and aimed more at a slightly younger crowd. The service was attentive and efficient. We ordered the pork belly and the spicy prawns with squid ink noodles. The pork belly was slightly dry and disappointing given it is marketed as the chef’s ‘speciality’. The prawns were generous and well cooked but the noodles were on the tough side. $12 for some sparkling water also seemed over the top. At the prices being charged we expected better.
Vegetarian Food Lover
Burma lane restaurant was dark & a bit cold inside. The service was attentive & friendly. Food wise, it was average. The food portions were generous but the same ingredients were used through different vegetarian dishes (cabbage & cauliflower). We ordered pretty much all the vegetarian dishes on the menu. The dishes were either too sweet or too sour for me.

Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ambiance: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Value: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

We did the ‘Linger Longer Lunch’ menu with six dishes.

The first three dishes were served as entrees. They were the ham and turkey dumplings, cured salmon and smoked chicken wings. I found the dumplings tasted a bit odd because it came with cranberry sauce, but it was very creative. I loved the chicken wings and would have had more. The sesame coating was delicious. The cured salmon was good, but not memorable.

The next three dishes were to share and came with rice. We had the slow braised chicken, five-spice pork belly and braised beef brisket. I loved the slow braised chicken the most. The chicken was tender and the sauce was fantastic.

The service was quick and diligent. Overall a fantastic lunch experience. I will definitely come back.
Jonathan Ong
the duck donut was probably the best thing, nothing else really stood out
tartare, fritters, fish, spatchcock, squid ink noodles were all just ok
service was good
all in all pricey for what the food is.
sister restaurant red spice road is much better.

We've always enjoyed dining here even though we hadn't been back for awhile, so it was an easy choice to bring some overseas guests here. They now have set menus that can cater for dietary requirements and my friends chose the "Shut Up and Feed Me" option.

In no time the first of four rounds arrived. Every dish was a taste sensation with abundant flavours and complementary textures. Locally sourced ingredients were used to produce an interpretation of the Burmese cuisine. The highlights were the smoked chicken wings, pork belly and papaya salad, finished off with a fabulous passionfruit semi-freddo. The chicken was a bit overcooked for my liking. Generous serves ensured we waddled out with full bellies.

With a classy and quiet atmosphere, it's a comfortable setting to enjoy a longer dinner conversation. Service was helpful and attentive throughout the visit. Attention to detail and a little less clanging during the crockery changeover would've netted the 5 but it was still a great experience.

Went for Monday lunch when it’s buy 1 set menu, get 1 free!
Service great
Food great
Most of all, my guest had a long list of dietaries yet the restaurant still was happy to accomodate us on this special
Thank you so much!! Will be back

Yum!! We booked via Dimmi and as an unexpected bonus got 30% off a banquet menu. I also noted in the booking it was for a birthday dinner which was acknowledged with a candle in dessert - a nice touch!
We had the “smaller” dinner menu and we were FULL. We were also able to make a small switch between menus which we appreciated!
Thoroughly enjoyable night out with the girls - I’d happily go back!!!

A great hidden gem! We had the “shut up and feed me” menu - and boy were we fed! Burma Lane’s food is flavourful, hearty and soul-warmingly good. The general staff were friendly, and to top it off the waitress that served us was funny too! 5/5 will be back ✨

Came here on a Friday night but it wasn’t as busy as we expected. We ordered the “shut up and feed me” set menu. Pork belly, wings and dessert (a passionfruit semi-freddo) were some of the highlights. Tomato salad and tofu were a bit bland.

Great quality Modern Asian food and superb service. The lunch special is only $39 per person (and half price on Mondays) and is a serious quantity of food and a great selection of the menu. Slow cooked lamb shoulder was seriously good, as was the pork belly. Worth a visit.
The Dear Luncher
There’s a nice symmetry to this pointless story: the cuisine at Burma Lane is also a little less Burmese than it once was, but that’s OK. Pan-Asian with a modern Australian twist is a trend The Dear Luncher can get his portly frame around ....***This would be a 3.5 if Zomato didn't remove their .5 options***

I had a great experience for lunch in this place.

I had some of the grazing tapas-sized dishes, and I was very impressed with the creativity of them all, and the wonderful mix of flavours. Everything I tried was yummy and satisfying. Perhaps the thing that surprised me the most was their tofu dish; tofu is one of those ingredients that, unless you know how to cook it, it can be bland and boring. Not here, the dish was so full of flavour and so silky that I would go there just for their tofu dish.

Attentive service and genuinely friendly staff.

Beautiful premises.

A bit pricey but totally worth it.
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: they are by the owners of red spice road and also this place also does more of an asian fusion as opposed to what the name suggests - Burmese.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: they have a good feed and it’s great atmosphere. We got the feed me lunch express option which is 30 a head. The chicken wings are amazing and marinated and fried very well.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: I didn’t personally enjoy the salads as they were nothing special especially given the price I was paying. The curry was too watered down and didn’t have the creamy texture and the meats were a little too chewy for my liking. I was actually quite disappointed since I love both the mackillop and the Q.V. Red spice road.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: the food is not exceptional and not Burmese per se.

I have never given any restaurant a 5/5 but this is truly beyond my expectation. Food is amazingggg and service is good as well. I would say one of the best services I've received in Melbourne so far. We ordered:

1. Duck, shiitake & water chestnut doughnut - 5/5 ( HIGHLY RECOMMEND ). Combination of sweet and salty blows your mind !

2. Betel leaf, green pea fritter- 5/5

3. Cauliflower, potato dumplings -3/5

4. Spicy Prawns, squid ink noodles - 4/5

Definitely one of my fav restaurants in Melbourne ❤️

Hidden away in little Collins away from the fancy restaurants :) Offering a more warm welcoming casual dinning experience with delicious Asian fusion dishes :)

Beef tartare - nicely seasoned in bite size :)

Kimchi oyster shot with salmon roe - oyster were really fresh I can eat a dozen on my own :P

Pork belly - reminds me of the ones from red spice, golden crispy with red vinegar n peppercorns caramel sauce yummy 😁😁

Assorted tea dessert - if U love tea you'll love this dessert :P you get to taste different types of tea with this little one (dessert taste so much better than red spice)

Would love to come back n sample other dishes :P
Really enjoyed this place! Although not very Burmese and quite similar to its sister restaurant (Red Spice Rd), we still loved the ambiance, service and food!
We had the duck donuts, lamb pie, spicy wings (yes they have a kick!), calamari, prawns, pork belly and tofu topped all topped off with a nice bottle of red and we were stuffed :) thanks for a lovely meal!

Seriously nothing special... not the flavours, not the quality, not the quantity, nor the service by one particularly aloof waitress... I’d been wanting to try this place for a while after having the feed me menu at Red Spice Road McKillop Street (which was much better by the way...) and was sadly disappointed with the food at Burma Lane. I wasn’t looking for authentic Burmese, but I was hoping for delicious, clever and great quality food. However it was kinda none of that. No zing, no tang, no kapow flavours with any sort of ‘wow! A lot of diced up tomatoes with no flavour served as a menu item on the banquet is a bit of a laugh... you’d think they’d want to showcase their best dishes rather than just trying to make a profit off the fact that you chose the “feed me” option. Apart from people who want to be seen in a “trendy” venue, I wouldn’t recommend this place at all. I now owe my boyfriend a thousand apologies for requesting he take me there for my birthday... such a disappointment.

Nice ambience for dinner by candlelight with good service as staff was attentive and polite. We came when it wasn't too busy at 5.30pm so food was quick to arrive.

Dumplings is crispy with tender and juicy meat, and as the name suggest; it was literally a burger in a dumpling with a side of pickle that acts as a palette cleanser. Chicken wings was spicy, tangy, sweet, and crispy with the sauce evenly coated.
Pork belly is not as sweet as the counterpart at Red spice but had the same crisp texture. However there was less sauce and some part was a little dry. The servings is small and expect to fork out a bit for your meal.

Solid menu, with enough variety to keep you intrigued. Personally I love this style of food, so it was an absolute winner for me! Shout out to the delicious Purple Rain cocktail I had! Yummmoooo

This restaurant is part of the group that also owns Red Spice Road in QV and Mckillop St. Although the name suggests Burmese food, it actually serves similar style of Asian food like the Red Spice Road (westernised Asian food). The wings are pretty good. The pork belly is good but Red Spice Road's is better in my opinion.
Foodme
Quite enjoyed the food here, cauliflower curry, chicken wings, chicken curry all great. Didnt care much for the tofu which was bland and salad with it was too sour. Sevice wasnt bad.....but wasnt good either. Overall a little pricey for what your getting. Its nice but can get the same SE asian food cheaper elsewhere.

We ordered the cheeseburger dumplings, chicken wings, squid and pork belly. The food was amazing! Wow! The only let down was the pork belly - it was a bit dry? - but still very good.
Ambience 5/5.
Service 5/5.
Food 4.5/5
We will definitely be back!!
Loved both of my visits. Staff are incredibly friendly despite being a busy and large restaurant. The set menu banquet option is great value for money and all the dishes I had were interesting, varied and tasty.

A welcome change to the great but ridiculously over popular Flinders lane restaurants!!

Another day, another asian fusion restaurant in Melbourne. Can someone do anything new anymore??? Well actually I don’t care because this place actually gets the food right and the concept in kinda cute playing on the revolutionary Myanmar but still look very western. It was spacious high ceiling and yet cozy.

The food was really delicious but quite pricey! The calamari and pork belly was my favorite. Burgers dumplings was interesting too.

The servers there were some European girls I think but they were very nice and attentive!

The drinks I really didn’t care for.

Food: 4/5
Service: 4/5
Ambience: 4/5

First up, I’d like to point out that the manager of the place, Matt, was the perfect host. So often you get sassy staff at decent eateries in Melbourne and it does my head in, but he was friendly and helpful from the get go. Went for the tasting menu and he was happy to accommodate us changing a few dishes. Deliciously sticky chicken wings with a hint of smokiness were delish. The potato cake was interesting and the cheeseburger dumplings actually tasted just like their name! The pork belly was so flavoursome and had a papaya salad on the side. Mains was the spatchcock with crispy skin with another salad on the side. Dessert was lemon cheesecake. Overall, we really enjoyed the experience and cheery service. Having the option for a carafe of sparkling is also a great thing!

Celebratory dinner here with a friend post exams. With two people, we had:

1. Wagyu cheeseburger bacon dumplings, vietnamese tomato sauce and pickle

- liked the flavours, but essentially it was a cheeseburger in a dumpling :), dumpling itself was beautifully made, thin and lovely

2. Lo Mai Gai (rolled chicken breast, shitake master sauce, pea puree, chilli sambal)
- I was excited about this dish, with Lo Mai Gai being one of my favourite dishes growing up. While it did not remind me of my past, it was a good dish. The chicken breast was nicely done, stuffed with well-marinated mushroom/rice. The pea puree did not make too much of a difference in the dish itself, and sambal was good.

3. Beef Brisket, Chu Hao, mint pineapple relish, peanut sambal steamed bao,
- clear winner of the night. beautifully made beef brisket. Fill a bao with a generous serve of this, and the accompaniments and it was lovely. More than enough beef to go around and more.

It was a weeknight, service was attentive and welcoming :)
I dined here 3 years prior on the pre-theater menu and was not very impressed with the flavours at the time.
It's great to see that menu modifications they've made have really made a difference to the food here :)
Linda
Decor and atmosphere is spot on! Great service and friendly staff. The cheeseburger dumplings are an absolute must try!! Amazing! The other food is good but small sizings for the price. Go for the cheeseburger dumplings...

Absolutely amazing! Came here for a friends birthday and so we got the 'Shut up and feed me dinner'. Deeeeee-licious! Food was so tasty. Staff were wonderful and very friendly. They had a very extensive wine list...found my new favorite wine here! And my god, make sure you try the lemongrass cheesecake for desert!

Ambience: 3.5/5
Food: 4/5
Staff: 4/5
Will I return: most likely yes

Celebrated a friend’s birthday party here one night. A bonus that this is one of the few restaurants in the city that allowed a la carte dining for larger groups rather than making everyone get the set menu.

The staff were friendly and guided us on what to order. They even allowed for cake cutting without charging us a cakage per person. We ordered a few dishes to share and everything tasted really good. The downside is that the beef dish with the steam buns only had three pieces. The fried chicken was a favourite amongst everyone but the consensus was that it was really difficult to eat a whole wing without making a mess everywhere. If they were cut up into drumette and wingette sizes, it would’ve probably been easier to eat. Despite that, every dish was pleasantly nice and much better from my first visit to the restaurant a year ago. Will happily consider coming back again to try a couple more dishes we didn’t get to try.

I visited Burma Lane last night for an early evening drinks and canapés session as part of the Bite Club. I have visited Burma Lane well before I started blogging so it was always good to come back and refresh my memory of this venue. The venue itself is nicely decked out with images on walls, stunning light fittings and sleek table styles. I noted that Aung San Suu Kyi's image still appears despite recent rebalancing of what the world thinks of her. We were upstairs for this event and were immediately welcomed with wine and beers. I tried a Shiraz/Pinot blend which I was quite impressed by having not tried this mix before. Being around 6pm I was actually quite hungry and eager for the canapés to arrive. Unfortunately it was a case of waiting staff taking the same route into a crowded room every time so it was torture for me in the corner who missed out the first couple of goes. All in all I only managed to secure 3 canapés during the evening and those only via sheer seagull mentality. What I tried I loved especially the wagyu & cheeseburger dumpling and the well spiced pork skewer. There was however nowhere near enough food to put on for the number of people who attended. Additional (my bad) I sadly neglected to mention when RSVPing that my plus 1 didn't eat meat other than seafood and chicken, as I assumed plentiful assortments of canapés and didn't forsee this food restriction to be a problem. She was only able to eat one of the three canapés on offer so was more starving than I at the end of the night. I was very hangry. Appreciative of this free event but I still argue food to drinks ratio was well out of wack.

Last night I went to Burma Lane for dinner. We got there early so we could have the $39 feed me menu. When we got there one waitress told us that the $39 feed me menu was no longer available since it was served during lunch time. But on the website it clearly said that it could be served between 5 to 6pm and we were there before 6pm. We had to show the waitress the website for confirmation. It happened a few other times as well where other waitresses were also confused about it. The staff need to be educated when the Feed Me menus finish for the day.

$39 per person gives you 6 dishes to share. One of those was rice. I didn’t eat the rice since I didn’t think it was needed.

We started our meal off with the betel leaf with pea fritter, tomato curry and roasted carrot yoghurt. Was definitely my favourite dish!

We then had the tofu with smashed tomato, herbs and peanuts. I thought this dish was average and plain.

The next dish was the cauliflower, potato dumplings, green beans, peanut chilli, Sichuan pepper. This was my second favourite dish. I loved the potato dumplings, could have eaten more of them.

Next we had the five spice pork belly. It was good but I haven’t been eating as much meat so can’t appreciate it as much as the vegetarian dishes. The beef brisket was also good.

I was disappointed I didn’t get to try the dessert there.

I would recommend getting a feed me menu. The food is quite expensive by itself so it’s vital to get a sharing menu instead in my opinion.

Staff were very friendly and talkative.

Enjoyed a very pleasant dinner at Burma Lane on Wednesday night. Mr B and I had booked, but given the time of year, it was fairly quiet. Staff were lovely and attentive and were prompt in providing us with a drink and menu options.

We went with the $69 feed me option and the food started arriving quickly. Starters included Betel leaf with snapper, herbs chilli & lemongrass, Shan tofu with smashed tomato, peanut & herb radish and smoked chicken wings with sesame and green onion. The highlight for me here were the chicken wings. Very tasty! The other plates weren't anything to be scoffed at either. For seconds we were offered the Cauliflower with potato dumplings, charred Brussels sprouts and a pickled tea leaf cabbage salad with peanut, crispy bean & tomato. Both offerings were both quite delicious. The dumpling were soft little pillows of loveliness. For mains were brought Beef brisket with chu hou, braised daikon and coriander, accompanied by a roasted carrot with paneer, pistachio, pomegranate and lentil salad. Both dishes again were enjoyed thoroughly! Lastly the lemongrass cheesecake dessert was brought out and I hit my wow moment for the night. Not that there was anything 'fancy' going here, but I absolutely loved it, and was sad when it was over.

Mr B and I were very happy with our dinner here. Good quality dishes and a good quantity too. Recommended for a lovely Asian fusion banquet.

Great service, waiting staff very lovely and food was brought out promptly. Delicious cocktails and food!! Recommend the octopus and Tuna dish, although portions are small and I still felt hungry after several dishes. A tad overpriced too. However definitely worth a visit.

Delicious food & wine, wonderful atmosphere, fabulous service. Perfect for couples, families or friends. I have been here 3 times & it’s always a delightful experience.

Good service and ambience. Staff is nice and friendly. The food was ok for the price. It was ok to try this place twice but wouldn't do it again. There arent any wow or amazing flavors to remember.
Anita Sivaraj
Nice atmosphere. Service was great. Ordered the dumplings (were fantastic), eel and duck donut (both average). Pork belly was good but the tea flower salad was ok. Dessert was very hard to eat. Too much rum. Will we go again probably not. We spent $160 including a bottle of wine. Didnt feel it was worth it.
Flying Forward
Points for: service, modern exciting flavours
Dine time: weekday dinner

Impeccable and attentive service, the wait staff are friendly and accommodating.
We opted to go a la carte instead of the set menu (there were 7 of us), however we may have under-ordered because I only had maybe 1 tablespoon from each dish. Thing is, even with two Entertainment Book vouchers, still came to $38 per person (without wine), so it is a bit on the pricey side.
The other confusing thing is, if you didn't read what the restaurant is about, you might ask yourself what exactly is Burmese food? Well, despite being called "Burma Lane", it's more of a modern/contemporary Asian-Australian menu, which is very common these days.
So what sets Burma Lane apart from similar restaurants?
A lot of the dishes do use SE Asian flavours, with Australian produce and a modern execution. Lots of contrasting flavours and textures, but also balanced.
- The seared tuna has a great wasabi kick in the end.
- The octopus was unexpectedly battered and deep fried.
- Beef brisket was very tender, with nice caramelized flavours.
- Snapper was firm and perfectly cooked - a nice light dish.
- Nori noodles was surprisingly good, my favourite dish. They are wide and flat like a papardelle. The miso butter and seaweed gave it a creamy earthy flavour.
- Dark chocolate cake had a good kick of chilli, but a little overdone, as it wasn't really gooey.
- Sticky rice and mango: didn't find any sliced mango, but the rice was nice and creamy with mango coulis
- Thai-ramisu had potential but was mostly foam and cream.

I was curious to try this place based on it’s interesting blend of cuisine.
First thing I can say about the venue is it’s high ceiling and fantastic mural when you walk in. However this is let down with bright lights and no really buzz or vibe.
Service was friendly and the tapas and entree style was quite good. The donut duck entree was delicious. Mains were okay. We ordered the snapper.
The dessert took 20min as they stated to us but was way to chilli and really over powered the rest of the dessert which was quite a shame.
The cocktails were decent and has some very interesting concoctions.
The Food Baby Maker
There isn't a lot of Burmese food in Melbourne so we were excited to try Burma lane! Food was tasty and service was very good. This was during renovations so we were not at their regular restaurant (instead a pop up at Meat, Fish & Wine) and so the space was a bit darker than usual but still extremely beautiful. We were given a glass of Prosecco on arrival to apologise for the change in venue which I thought was a lovely touch. Our favourite dish was the tea leaf salad - very fresh and interesting flavours. We were so full we had no room for dessert but keen to revisit and try more of the menu! Our hostess was a delight and added to a great night!
Sinbingames
Either I was absolutely starving or this was one of the tastiest meals I've had in a very very long time.
Servings were generous but still couldn't get enough! Definitely will be coming back.
The octopus is a must try!
Good Food Good Mood
Burma Lane shares the same owners as Red Spice Road (love) and Meat Fish Wine (loathe, see both previous reviews). I was pleased to see BL fell firmly into the love category. Deee licious beverages (why are the Zomato menus always out of date or incomplete, don't worry cocktail fans they have them). Dishes came to the table vibrant and packed with flavour. We chose to order a la cart rather than take up the feed me menu due to some fussy eaters in our group. It is sharing style food so this worked well for us, the picky among us shared together and the other more adventurous half of us shared between us. The lamb shoulder was sensational. I loved the little cumin lamb potato cakes with mint yoghurt too, very delicious.
The space itself was beautiful rather modern and contemporary and there was a lovely ambiance. An early mid week dinner was relatively quiet so it felt very calm and relaxing. It would actually be a really fantastic date night venue. Service was exemplary
Stan
Came for dinner on a Saturday night. Waitress was amazing; friendly, provided some good food recommendations and enjoyable chit chat.

Food was fantastic, especially the duck doughnuts, cured salmon and cheeseburger dumplings. While there are alot of fusion asian restaurants around, we found the balance of flavours was particularly inventive and imaginative.

Mrs Mark
The good: generous portion sizes for mains at least, the duck donuts, the lamb potato cakes. The bad: all the mains tasted the same -a mixture of chilli and soy. The desserts - the lime parfait was inedible.
David Food Leasing
DO: The feed me menu if it's you're first time. However, stand out dishes were as follows: chicken wings, lamb shoulder, pork belly (similar to the amazing Red Spice Rd), wagyu cheeseburger dumpling and cumin lamb potato cakes.

DON'T: You dare leave without dessert. Nutella French toast and Pineapple cheesecake was the shiz.

TIP: We were delighted to score the best seats in the house thanks to Monique. If you can go upstairs, closest to balcony overlooking the downstairs area.

We really enjoyed our two recent visits to Burma Lane. They have a great lunch time special which is good to keep in mind for your next work meeting or outing. They have a selection of Thai fusion meals which are all tasty and flavoursome.

We tried the chicken wings which were sticky and delicious, the red curry which packed a flavour punch, the potato and pork croquettes are crispy and creamy. The squid and nori noodles weren't my thing, there was something about consistency that I didn't like.

The slow cooked lamb bao were yum and the pork belly and the mushroom stir fry were absolute standouts.

Worth giving this place a go 👍🏻
Love At First Bite
Find us on instagram: loveatfirstbite_aus

Burma Lane is run by the same team than also runs Red Spice Road. It serves up Asian inspired tapas and sharing style dishes that combine Asian and modern Australian flavours. We came here one evening in a group of three for dinner and will share that experience with you. To start we got a glass of red wine and white wine, which we thought would be nice to accompany a fancy dinner out.

Lovely restaurant, great customer service, dishes are well presented but food are too salty for me. Will not be my first choice to go back again if I'm in town.
Vegemite Girl
I really love this restaurant. Having been to Burma on a number of occasions, I can say that some of the menu is authentic. However, i haven't traveled throughout, so i don't know about the rest. The tea leaf salad was wonderful, as was the ceviche and smoked eel. Ill be back.
FoodingAroundMelbourne
Decor in this restaurant was really beautiful and classy. Came here for a family dinner and it lives up to expectations. Food was tasty and not overly expensive.

‘Created in Melbourne, Inspired by Asia’…..that tagline fits Burma Lane perfectly. I was at Burma Lane recently for a tasting of their new menu and also to view the photographic exhibition, ‘Seasons of Gold’. And as part of my work with Indian Link, I was also doing an interview with Anu Kumar, one of the photographers taking part in the exhibition.

Enjoyed the "Feed Me menu" for $29 pp. Our favourite dish was the five spice pork belly. This was full of flavour along with crispy skin too. The chicken wings were equally delicious with a great sticky sauce and we loved that it came with cute little wet wipes so you can enjoy with your hands 😉.

The pickled tea leaf cabbage and shan tofu with smashed tomato provided freshness and texture to the meal.

The restaurant also accommodated dietry requests (no nuts) so my eating companion was able to enjoy the "Feed Me menu" without missing out on selected dishes.

We completed our yummy lunch with Pineapple Cheesecake, combined with the pandan, honeycomb and white chocolate ice cream. The coffee also hit the spot!

The only downside was the wine was on the expensive side for Melbourne CBD.

We did feel the ambience of the restaurant would also be great for a working lunch, with a large seating area there is lots of room to move and have a work meeting. The set menu would also assist in making selection of food quick and easy.

The artwork on surrounding walls was visually appealing as we sat and enjoyed our meals.

Thanks for inviting us to try your menu.

My colleague and I went here during the week for a nice lunch. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a smile and seated immediately. I absolutely love the interior of Burma Lane. It's intimate and cosy without being pretentious. The art on the walls is definitely photo-worthy too.

I'm an indecisive eater so was very happy to see a 'feed me' option which my colleague was happy to go for as well. For $29pp we shared 5 delicious plates! The waitress kindly asked if we had any dietary requirements or if there was anything we didn't eat. I just mentioned that I don't eat beef or pork. Everything that came out was delicious and full of flavour. The ceviche-style style white fish is definitely a must!
Stunsail
Great food, great cocktails but the service is a bit up and down. I've been here for corporate banquets which have been welcoming and warm and then dined here with friends in a group and the service has been cool and distant.
Sara Lee
great atmosphere. great food. great service.

I really enjoyed the food there. Will definitely come again. the atmosphere was comfortable and the staff was really friendly

We popped in here for dinner as the menu was appealing and the place looks inviting and clean. Service was great - Purple Rain cocktail was nice. We started with entrees of cured salmon, green pea fritter & cod croquette... all very tasty and delicious. Then small meals of Wagyu burger dumplings which was abit bland really so not that appealing the Papaya salad just had too much chilli in it but the Lamb potato cakes were nice. The meals came out quite quickly.
Butsi
Their service was considerate and friendly, however the food was a little disappointing. We ordered the Beef curry which was cooked well but the curry was so bland, I would have had the same experience licking the back of a silver spoon unfortunately. In addition to that main, we ordered the pork belly, it wasn't bad but it wasn't great either, again, the dish wasn't full of flavor. The one dish that did leave a lasting impression was the tofu, a different approach to other flavor combinations I've had at Asian fusion restaurants and it worked in their favor. Overall, it wasn't the worst experience, but you're better off heading to Longrain for the same price.
Tina Salameh
Good was okay, tasty but tiny, even though we spent $80 for 2 people. The food rating Overall is a 3.5 but the portions, seriously small especially for what you pay. Probably not one of return back to..

Our experience at Burma Lane last night was amazing. Luckily I called 5 minutes ahead to make sure there was a table - even at 8:15 they were very busy.
Our server was very friendly and attentive, and the food had unusual flavour combinations. The nori noodles with octopus were umami and creamy and paired with ginger. Delicious. The fried squid was also very tender - the waiter said that it's cooked for 8 hours. That dish was a bit small, but I would still recommend it.
In all a great date night - topped off by a great dessert.
Toilet rating: 8/10

Burma Lane takes you on a culinary journey which (refreshingly!) awakens your palette.
The service is great and the decor is very cool...and now I'm just writing to add the the word count because apparently 140 words makes a review complete (no matter the content).

Burma Lane is a great venue! Recently they had an interior revamp and had the iconic artist Mike Eleven in. The revamp definitely paid off, in my opinion it has some of the best interior design I have seen in any restaurant. As well as a great interior, Burma Lane also serves very good food. Honestly I had no idea what to expect. Their food is extremely refined and great for sharing, I am really looking forward to going back and trying more. We just let the chef choose what we had so we had no idea what had come out. Chefs menus excite me.
Mark Quadrio
Everything was just ok here. Doesn't live up to Red Spice Road. The service was just average here. The food was good but nothing special for the price.
Taking A Bite
|| the secret of success in life is to eat what you like || I loved the salmon dish on the new menu at Burma Lane Cured salmon, smoked tomato romesco, anchovy Kewpie, shallot, seaweed cracker, absolutely delicious! Each dish on the menu is inspired by Burmese cuisine and captures diverse Australian cuisine with an Asian flair. // What's as Good as a Cheeseburger you ask? Cheeseburger dumplings that's what! // The amazing dumplings are on the new menu at Burma Lane Filled with Cheesy Wagyu Beef and bacon, with Vietnamese tomato sauce and pickle. There are many more dishes as well as mocktails and cocktails to tickle your fancy on a night out or lunch with a friend. Attentive staff, beautiful atmosphere. A must visit in the CBD!

In Melbourne, we live in a fast-paced, forever changing foodie world. What is trendy today could be old news tomorrow, and the very best restaurants are constantly changing and recreating their menus to keep us all engaged in their scene. This is why it was so refreshing to see popular CBD restaurant Burma Lane moving away from its Burmese style menu of seasons past, and re-opening with a new and exciting Modern Australian meets Asian fusion vibe that celebrates Melbournes’ multiculturalism. We loved getting a sneak peek of the new menu from executive chef John McLeay, and were impressed by the European tapas style influences sneaking into the food along with the subtle Asian flavours and impressive cooking style. Each dish was flavoursome, texturally exciting and plated beautifully.

.
I was expecting to have an authentic Burmese cuisine here, but turns out it's more an Asian fusion meal in a good way 🇲🇲🇦🇺
.
We ordered the PICKLED TEA LEAF SALAD🍃($19) It was not as weird as it sounds, actually tasted interesting. The mixture of picked tea leaf, cabbage, peanut, crispy bean, tomato salad goes so well with rice🍚 Easily became one of my favorite Burmese dishes.
.
XIN JIANG LAMB SHOULDER ($34) was overly dry and not tender enough, would be better if it's juicier or has sauce along with it. Love the crispy rice though
.
My favorite dish of the night was the PORK BELLY with black pepper caramel and green mango salad 🐷($34) It was better than I expected, the sauce was spot on. The texture could have been softer but I do enjoy it a lot😋💦
.
Staff were attentive and friendly, the interior is astonishing. Would love to come back again : )

Restaurant ambience was lovely, perfect for a catch up session with friends. We tried one small bite-- the one with the crispy seaweed and it was amazing!! We also ordered the xin Jiang lamb and the pork belly. Both were ok but was a bit on the salty side. Prices are a bit on the high end for the quality.
Heidi
Not as good as red spice road but definitely still a cool place to check out! We ordered to many dishes to share but the highlights for sure were the Burmese buns - Steamed buns filled with crispy fish, green mango salad, turmeric mayo awesome! Also the lamb Slow Cooked w/ Yoghurt w/ Pea & Tomato Biryani was also delish! Definitely check it out, also utilized the entertainment book voucher so scored $40 off!

Had our staff Christmas party here last year, and it was lovely. We had the banquet menu and most of the food was fantastic, the chicken salad, beef cheek and pork belly being stand outs. I do prefer the food over at Red Spice Road because of the slightly more subtle flavours. The biggest thing stopping me from giving a higher score is that the service is incredibly quick. For a Christmas party, it would have been nice for the food to come out in a staggered fashion rather than all at once right at the start. A great lunch regardless.

A beautifully designed space to dine in. The restaurant has a lovely feel to it. We dined as a group and shared a number of plates between us. The dishes were all very well presented, adequate in size, and the flavours were well matched. The service was friendly and attentive. I liked that I could book ahead of time. I would definitely return.

Very disappointed. Good beer range. Had a banquet for food. First course was a delicious lamb rib and salmon. Second course chicken was nice and prawns were good too. Unfortunately it was only one prawn per serve. Next had lamb biryani which was again extremely small serve and didn't have any rice in it. Service was very slow and our group had to eat plain white rice to get full. The desert was good. So disappointing to pay $70 and feel hungry afterwards. Won't come back

Had the 69$ banquet - found it to be overpiced. Very small portions and took ages to arrive. Everyone was still hungry at the end. Unacceptable for that price!!
Philip McGarva
Disappointing. Small servings that looked tired and tasted ordinary. The pictures of the beautiful, colourful, fresh-looking food on the website do not match the experience. Won't go back.

The ambience and service was good but the food (taste and portion sizes) and service was below average. We had high expectations and went there for a birthday but were disappointed.

Dinner for five on a Saturday night started out well. Decided on the banquet which had a good selection of salads and meat and included a delicious dessert. The problem came right at the end when we went to pay and could easily been avoided. We were given the bill which, with wine came to over $100 per person. We were almost sorted when I noticed that the bill included a credit card charge of almost $10! When we questioned the wait staff the response was "I only work here"! For an expensive restaurant I would have thought the customer service would be better than that. It made my uncle very angry and spoiled our evening. Note to owner- do not charge a surcharge up front if you haven't asked whether the customer is paying by cash or not!

I came eager to try Burmese food and I was expecting good things given my experience at Red Spice Road. Though my mind wasn't blown, I didn't leave disappointed! The fried shan tofu was quite nice and I loved the crunchy bits that dressed the dish. The bao was soft, fish was crispy and the spicy mayo had really good flavours. The The pumpkin curry I felt was lacking in flavour and I wish there was more sauce because we were left with way too much paratha. The pork belly was delicious, the sauce was absolutely spot on, but the texture of the pork belly could've been softer. The highlight for me was actually the Laphet Thoke (pickled tea leaf salad), had a real nice balance of flavours and textures.
Overall a wonderful dining experience but not exceptional.
Sesel
Thirty dollar lunch banquet was disappointing. The highlight was the pork belly but the beef salad was really plain and boring. Expect a bit more for a thirty dollar lunch.
@twogoodtoresist
Wow! We're not sure where to begin! Firstly the interior of this restaurant is breath taking and really makes you feel like you've stepped out of melbourne into a heavenly haven of deliciousness! The cocktails here are some of the best we've ever had! The smashed tofu entree is an absolute must, the fish baos were fantastic too! The seared salmon salad honestly tasted like nothing we've tried before! The vegetarian curry and barramundi were delicious and flavoursome. Peanut butter parfait and coconut tapioca desserts were beyond amazing. Really- not a bad word to be said here- service, experience, value for money included!

We went for an elaborated banquet on Mondays - (1+1 offer) and the food wasn't bad . Great variety - all dishes were very different from one another . Having said that - nothing blew me away or was exceptionally different or tasty. I was very excited by the name thinking I may get some ( if not all ) traces of Burmese food but I was disappointed . Their other joint 'Red spice road ' is way better and I personally will choose that over this one .
Good service - staff was very friendly .
Decor is great too - has a casual feel to it.
Will I go again ? Probably will not choose to simply because there are better options out there .
My dining experiences at Burma Lane involved unique dishes that were very dissimilar from one another, making the banquets a very good choice. This restaurant has the best interior design among all Apples and Pears restaurants. In terms of food, some highlights were the smashed beef salad as it had great texture, and the pickled tea leaf salad due to it's interesting taste. I also liked the beef cheek curry and the duck curry - they had bold sauces that were stronger in the flavour of stock rather than coconut cream compared to most traditional curries. I found that most savoury dishes were generally on the sweeter side, and the fried goods had too much batter. As for the desserts at Burma Lane, none of them were amazing. In fact, the coconut water tapioca with pineapple flavoured cream tasted very artificial and I couldn't have more than a few bites of it unfortunately! Overall, Burma Lane is good for new experiences and the interior is very nice to be in.

Great value for money considering the specials they have going on at the moment. We decided to go ala carte first time around just to get a taste of the place. The fish bao was amazing, the salmon betal leaf not so much; it tasted a bit like asian inspired canned tuna to be honest. The lamb ribs were pretty dry and were crying out for some sweet, sticky sauce, I ventured to ask for more sauce, but having tasted how terrible the dressing actually was, I'll have to admit it was a good call for the kitchen to go light on it, which isn't really a good thing. I quite liked the crispy skin barramundi, but I did find a bone in it (maybe it's just not my time for fish) and the beef in the curry was cooked really well but I thought the sauce itself was a tad strong. Highlight by far though was the paratha, which is perfectly buttery and moorish, I could've easily eaten 5 of those with a good curry sauce to dip into (or even without). All in all though, I will definitely come back on a Monday to try a banquet.

This place is very good. Nice atmosphere, good service and excellent food. The meat dishes are balanced by the delicious salads. I have been several times and always enjoy it. It's also fine because some like it hot and some sweat when the heat is on

We ordered the onion fritters for entrée, very crunchy with interesting flavors. The duck curry was off the bone and good enough. The beef salad is not really a salad, more like a pulled beef smash, well seasoned and soft, highly recommended.
The five spice Panna cotta was a surprisingly delicious taste, while the mung bean custard was a bit forgettable.
Worth trying.
Annie Lu
The five spice panacota is my fav dish of what we ordered : onion fritter for entry, smashed beef salads and duck curry for mains. The curry is very light, maybe that's the burmese style kind of curry.
Krill3Ways
The cured salmon was done perfectly, the bao hit the spot with regards to flavour, and the parfait satisfied the sweet tooth. Lovely service.

These days, most of us could consider ourselves fairly well versed in South East Asian cuisine – Thai food has become a takeaway dinner staple, Bali’s now a favourite holiday destination, and even the fare of Laos and Cambodia has started making its way into Western hearts and bellies everywhere. But Burmese food…not so much. Even this diehard foodie could claim little knowledge of the cuisine, before sitting down to Burma Lane’s 19th Street degustation dinner. The stylish CBD eatery hosts a handful of banquets every year, each one designed to introduce diners to a different faucet of this delicious, yet underrepresented, cuisine.

I was lead to believed that this place will send me to a different dimension in regards to their food being amazing. With this belief in my head, I dragged a friend of mine to sample their morsel. It was a cold winter day and we were freezing before entering the establishment. I was hoping for a blast of cold air inside but that day was not my lucky day. Nevertheless, we were greeted warmly. It was dimly lighted and there was not a lot of customers inside. We ordered a lemongrass tea to warm us up. For entree, we had the betel leaf topped with nga tong smashed fish with chilli, lime and herbs. To be honest, I couldn't tell if there was chilli on this dish. It was good but I find it lacking. For main, we had spicy chicken wings with Burmese slaw, balaunchang & tart sweet chilli garlic sauce and fried shan tofu with smashed tomato, herbs, and peanuts and paratha on the side. The chicken was good, but on the sweeter side. The tofu has an interesting taste to it. The paratha, well it just tasted like any paratha I had before. Overall, I can't say that I had an amazing experience especially with the expectations I had. The customer service on that day was pretty good though. I don't think I will come back soon.

Rather eat somewhere else, we stopped in after work for dinner. The food is pretty gross, especially when compared to other restaurants in the area. We waited 30 minutes for our mains, the waitress did apologise, and we wouldn't have minded if the food was amazing, but unfortunately not. With only about 6 tables occupied, this is a bit concerning. Won't visit again.

Came here on Saturday night for a 6pm booking for 4 people.. We were slightly late however the staff were very friendly and accommodating!! As it was not fully booked we were able to stay as long as we wanted (and not out by 8pm which was a bonus)

I love red spice road so had to check out Burma...
Kezia
The place is really nice. We ordered one starter Chicken Wings and two main for share Beef Cheek and Peas Fritters with rice. Our meals are very delicious! We'll definitely come back

We had a lovely dinner at Burma Lane. We were a difficult table with a pescetarian, a vegetarian, one nut allergy and one 'normal' diner. We ordered the banquet and nothing was too much trouble despite our specialised table requirements. The food was fantastic and just kept coming out (suitably assigned to the right dietary issues). Staff were super friendly too. Delicious and a fun night out. :)
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
It would be easy to be overshadowed if your stablemate is the ever-popular Red Spice Road. Burma Lane is headed up by Executive Chef John McLeay, who also looks after RSR, and the menu takes inspiration from both modern and traditional Burmese food, injected with a Modern Australian twist. The multi-level restaurant is dark and modern, and the contemporary feel is furthered by walls featuring local art and a colourful mural of now State Counsellor, Aung San Suu Kyi.

Oh my gosh - my new favourite restaurant! Took my mum here for dinner and we loved every aspect, what a find! We arrived early at 5pm, for a pre-theatre dinner, weary from browsing the shops. Such a beautiful restaurant - really impressive, stunning birdcage light fittings, very modern Asian décor with a big colourful portrait of Aung San Suu Kyi painted onto a wall, cleverly reflected in mirrors on the opposite wall. Very relaxed, elegant vibe, would be perfect for a romantic night out.The food - yum yum yum! If you like spicy modern Asian, this is heaven. On the advice of our super friendly and helpful waiter Greg, we started with Shredded Fish with Betel Leaves, Tomato Pickle, Lemongrass, Coriander - in a word, divine. The Chicken Corn & Potato Samosas were also delicious, accompanied by a beautiful tomato relish. For mains, we shared a Slow Cooked Lamb Biryani (mild) and an amazing salad - Laphet Thoke (Pickled Tea Leaf, Cabbage, Tomato, Peanut & Sesame Salad w/ Crunchy Bits ), the flavours and textures were superb. We also ordered a light and crispy Paratha bread - the best I've ever had. Finally, we managed to stuff in dessert: Coconut Water Tapioca, Passionfruit Cream, Candied Popcorn, Cashew Praline (all in one dish) and Five Spice Pannacotta, Thai Mung Bean Custard Cake, Pineapple Jam (the other dish). Oh dear lord - the flavours, the textures, the presentation! I don't usually take photos of my food, but I couldn't resist. What a meal! Service was faultless, the staff were so lovely, I can't wait to go back.

Since the stooges haven’t been together for a while, this means we gotta re-unite and we all decided to check out another cuisine we haven’t tried - burmese food at Burma Lane. I made a booking for 3 on a Friday night at 6:30PM and the two stooges got there first and bagged our table. . I rushed in and plonked my tooshie down and we looked over the cocktail menu. Stooge 1 and I got the Jungle Gin because we ABSOLUTELY LOVE our gins! This hit our gin spot and with a slice of cucumber, so refreshing.
Spice Of Life
Disappointed. Came here on thurs for pre show dinner. Restaurant tucked away amongst office buildings. An upmarket venue with great ambience. Ordered chargrilled chicken and pork belly with burmese rice to share. Service was friendly but food took a little long to come out which we fretted over as we still had to walk to our show. Presentation was vibrant and fresh and servings were medium. The chicken had good flavours but was quite dry. Pork was fatty and needed extra cooking time to render as it chewy and not tender as it should be. Rice was unusual in a good way with a strong taste of some kind of spice. Disappointed in comparison to Red Spice their sister restaurant. Overall It was a nice restaurant clean and classy but nothing stood out as exceptional. Not likely to return.
The Swine
Quality and Flavour are two distinct features that come to mind when dining at Burma Lane. From the moment the Swine entered the premises this place oozed class. This includes the room decour, tableware, and courteous staff. Bravo staff - who handled the Swine's bad humour about Tofu with total professionalism. The room/s are elegant and awesome. The Swine brigade ordered a banquette option and loved every little bit. The fish, meat and salad options were full of flavour and piggy scrumptious. The Swine wishes he could move in here - absolutely loved the Burmese cuisine. Yes the Swine will be back...and yes Burna Lane is a big fat Swine Approved!!

Having both enjoyed visits to at least one of the Red Spice Road sisters restaurants, we were both looking forward to our meal at Burma Lane, prior to a comedy festival gig. The signage on Little Collins street is fairly inconspicuous until you are right outside. Inside the fit out is fairly modern, including a street art mural portrait of Aung San Suu Kyi which was right above our table. I don't recall ever eating Burmese food before and haven't visited the country so didn't know quite what to expect, other than assuming the cuisine would be influenced by it's neighbours including India and Thailand.

Immaculate and nice settings complement ed by friendly staff.
Foods different and unique - the lamb biryani and duck curry is a must.
Sarah Qi
The food is quite nice, good portion size for the price and very tasty. The decor and ambience of the restaurant is lovely. The only slight problem is the service, our waitress wasn't really very helpful and kept trying to rush us even though the restaurant was half full and our plates are clearly not empty yet. Yummy food and drinks overall.
Schnitzel Von Krumm
Having read many positive reviews, we had high expectations coming to Burma Lane. However, we were rather disappointed with our experience there.

The restaurant had interesting, art deco inspired décor, however, this was literally overshadowed by the sheer darkness of the room. We were unfortunate to be served by a particularly irksome waitress, who failed to write down our orders (we were a group of 6!) and subsequently delivered us the incorrect starters. Her lack of enthusiasm and limited knowledge of the menu was quite frustrating – she failed to offer us any suggestions when asked.

The food we eventually ordered was, for the most part, uninspiring. The samosas ($15) were very average and the fish buns ($16) were bland and boring. The fried tofu was the one dish we all enjoyed. Mains, at about $30 apiece, were very poor. The Rangoon Mohinga was the most disappointing of all, we hardly touched it because it was honestly revolting – I can only describe it as an entire jar of shrimp paste coating soggy two-minute noodles. The other meals were of the quality you would expect from your local Indian take-away. The Laphet Thoke (pickled tea-leaf salad), adorned the ‘signature dish’ of Burma Lane, was the only highlight of the mains – bursting with interesting flavours and textures.

Overall, there were far more negatives than positives. I think Burma Lane fails to meet the standard marketed and does not provide value for money or an enjoyable dining experience.

Sometime last year, I received a gift voucher from the Apples & Pears Group when their Red Spice Road on McKillop street had to close their doors for a period of time due to a kitchen fire. Le Boy and I were not too familiar with their sister restaurants at the time and thought it’d be the perfect opportunity to give their other restaurants a go. Before coming to Burma Lane, I had but only one other Burmese dining experience.
Fork You
Had a delicious meal here for a group of 6. Got the banquet and definitely had enough food - practically rolled out of there. Everything tasted very fresh and flavorsome. The waitress was very good and explained what every dish was.
TresHungry
Had an incredible meal here for my birthday. It was my first time trying Burmese food and this place set the bar pretty high. I loved everything we ordered. The service was also fantastic. The waitress made sure to explain what every dish was when she put them down on the table. The restaurant also had a lovely ambience and would make a great choice for a date night. I can't wait to return!
Paige Coleman
Service was great; staff were friendly and attentive filling or water glasses.

Beautiful restaurant and set up;
Down side? Being seated next to the door and when it opens you get a cold breeze down your back. And that's not from a walk up; that was from a booking made weeks in advance for 6 people. Pretty disappointing not to have prime seating.

If you are going to order food go for the char grilled beef and the vanilla cheesecake! Absolutely to die for.
TJ
Great spot for a an intimate dinner, a much quieter restaurant than the norm these days. Food was really good but was a bit disappointing that the chicken wings weren't in fact GF as stated, they aren't cooked in separate oil.
Emma Harmer
Great food! I went there for my birthday it was great! Loved the pork belly and the cocktails were creative and delicious!
Lots of Asian fusion flavors!
Melbourne Glutton
Burma Lane shares the same owners as Red Spice Road and serves similarly tantalising South East Asian cuisine, with a particular focus on Burmese flavours.
Perpetuity Of Food
Situated on a quieter part of Lt Collins Street, Burma Lane was a perfect location for a group catch up, with ample space inside and no long waits required.

The food was great. We ordered a range of small dishes and larger dishes to share - the highlights were the slow cooked lamb and roasted pork belly.

The food at Burma Lane is probably not authentically Burmese, but you can certainly expect a good Asian fusion meal.
MarkM77
Attended for lunch a few times. Great set menu and waiters are always helpful with choice if required. Delicious food in good proportions. Great for a group.
YumYum
There aren't that many Burmese eateries so we didn't quite know what to expect. I'm not sure how authentic the food is to Burma but it's definitely delicious and similar to the other Asian fusion restaurants around.
The starters were the highlight especially the Bao buns. Yum!
My boyfriend and I came here for dinner yesterday. The atmosphere was nice, loved the lights in the birdcages. We ordered beef curry and fisherman's stew as mains. They were generous serves and went well with plain rice. As for desserts, we ordered 'can't choose'. We were glad that this was one of the options because we have problems choosing desserts all the time! The coconut panna cotta was our favourite, I wish there were more lime. The dark chocolate mousse was good, I think it would work if it was a dark chocolate ice cream! The salted caramel ice cream with cheesecake was the disappointment - we thought we would see a bit of the cheesecake, but we only saw the crumbs underneath the ice cream.

Anyway, it was a very good dinner. We really enjoyed it. The service was great too!

We had a wonderful experience here last Sat evening. We were keen on a banquet option but didn't think we'd have time prior to our show. Waiter said no problem and arranged the kitchen to bring out dishes out a little faster to ensure we'd make it on time and get to enjoy the banquet. The start of wonderful service received all evening. This was our first time eating Burmese food and absolutely loved it. Each dish was wonderful cooked and packed full of flavour. It was on the more expensive side but for a special occasion worth it. Highly recommend coming here!

A refined experience. I popped in with a friend for the lunch special 2 Mains for $22 per person.
We order the short rib, which literally fell off the bone and the chopped chicken. Both were a flavour bomb and came with a side of rice to ensure you could soak up all those delicious juices. Staff were friendly and had good service, but I will mention we were in for an early work day lunch and were 1 of 2 tables in the restaurant.

I had been recommended Burma Lane by a number of friends here in Melbourne who said that I would absolutely love it. I think part of this was because I have a keen interest in all things Burma (having travelled and worked in the region in the past ), am adventurous in my food choices and loveeeeee asian food. So when my friend asked me to join her for a meal there, I was more than happy to come and try it out.

First for the good - really lovely service and great wine. The design of the restaurant is interesting, intimate and really warm. However, I felt a little let down by the food...but perhaps that was because of our choices in dishes, or maybe the strong, confronting flavours of Burmese food were watered down for the Australian market?

We shared dishes, with the most anticipated one the Shan Tofu which I have a great love affair for ...but it didnt live up to my personal hype. I felt like the chunky tomato on the top could have been smaller pieces to make it less of the main ingredient or the tomato could have been made into a spicy fishy tamarind salsa? something that replicates the sour sauce that you will get when you eat this in Burma...perhaps i will come back, or maybe i just need to learn to make Burmese dishes at home instead ;)

Delicious!! The samosas, the slow cooked lamb, and the beef short rib were the bomb. Great, full flavors present in all of the food eaten in the banquet. Nice open space, and wont break the bank. You gotta do it!!
FoodieMelbourne
I have eaten here twice before and today for the third time. I thought it was just luck the first two times that the food was so good. I mean absolutely brilliant and each dish has such incredible flavours. The food is similar to Chin Chin but equal to or better in terms of originality flavours and port in size. Every dish and I have tried just about everything on the menu is outstanding and I am super critical bugger. Apart from the food the service, setting and price is also very good. This should be in Melbourne's top 10 restaurants.
Skinny Glutton
The following three dishes arrived together, each competing for space in my stomach. The Rangoon Mohinga with it’s delicate rice noodles, wrapped around turmeric cooked rockling. The zesty lemongrass broth smoothed the flavour profile and the addition of a yolky egg is always pleasing.

The Tea Tree Leaf salad was the highlight of my last sojourn with Burma Lane. The tea leaves are pickled so that they have a piquant taste, reminiscent almost of blue cheese. The wilted pickled leaves are stabilised by the generous mix of crunchy shallots, broad beans, sesame seeds and peanuts. The addition of tomato adds a quintessential sweetness to this salad dish. Whilst I do not usually make friends with salad, I would happily become form a blood pact with this salad.

Burma Lane brings contemporary Burmese cuisine to the Paris end of Melbourne. The interiors with its wall hangings, birdcages and retro-inspired artwork is interesting and the service is exceptional. The plates are designed to share with noodles and salads offered as accompaniments. Burma Lane is the brainchild of the company that brought us the chain of Red Spice Road restaurants. Deliciousness!

Tried this place with my parents as they were staying at a hotel across the road, was simply surprised, such an underrated little gem. The service was impeccable and the food matched. We tried the sweet potato samosas and shredded lamb cakes, both complimented each other and were a great first taste. Next the beef short rib was to die for, again a melt sensation in your mouth. This was paired with the pork belly and rolled chicken aloo. Definitely recommend to anyone who loves a bit of upmarket asian and doesn't want to wait hours to get into a restaurant in the CDB. Will def be back

Great ambience. Prompt and attentive service. Food was excellent! Highly recommend the roasted pork belly. The coconut panacotta and the vanilla cheesecakes are must haves..

I was a bit sceptical, as I think Red Spice Road is one of the most over-rated restaraunts around. But the food at Burma Lane was great and service far superior to the sister restaraunts. Well worth a visit.
Z For GoodFood
Went for a business lunch and had their express lunch menu. The place was rather empty on a Monday when we went in at 1pm. Felt a bit deserted, but waitress was pleasant enough. The fish cake and leaf entree were nice. Fish curry main was interesting but the fish was a bit dry. Dessert was lovely. Only thing was that towards the end of our meal, the place seemed had turned off its aircon and it got quite chilly inside.
LiveToEat
I tried this place after I saw that it was also run by the same people as Red Spice Road - a restaurant I absolutely love! I didn't think Burma Lane was as good as Red Spice Road but it was a nice dining experience overall. It's a nice looking restaurant with romantic ambient lighting. Nice place for a date! We ordered the betel leaves for entree which were nice. For mains we had the pork belly and the lamb slow cooked in yogurt. The lamb dish was nice. I liked the flavours in the pork belly dish however the skin was a bit too tough for my liking. It was a bit if a struggle to eat. Service was lovely and location is great in the heart of the city!
@LivForFood
Flavours are delicate and sophisticated. Mixture of east vs west flavours which combine together well. Everything was cooked very well, nothing was over cooked and salads were well dressed. Recommend the lamb and potato croquettes and fish curry. Wouldnt bother with the betal leaf entree.
Rob
I just wish I could come here more often. By the same people who do Red Spice Road. Ive always found the food to be tasty and flavoursome, and (being Burmese) it's a nice change to the regular Thai flavours and experience. The staff have always been friendly and accommodating. I did find the acoustics a little poor when the restaurant is busy, so it's sometimes a little hard to hear people if you're in a group. They also do goo lunch specials.
Andrew Petryszak
Fantastic little gem. We found this place while looking for a place for dinner. We definitely made the right choice to walk in!Managed to find us a table without a booking on a Friday night. Service was excellent and very friendly staff.Food was generous, well priced and tasted authentic. Menu variety is not overly huge, but what they do have on there is amazing. We ordered the Pork Belly and Slow cooked Lamb and I couldn't fault it! Tender, soft meat with just the right mix of spices.Ambience is great too, its a loft style restaurant with a mezzanie but still has that cosy feel to it.Will definitely be back!
Krishna Brannigan
Wonderful ambience everything was delicious especially loved roaring rum cocktail and it's in the entertainment book! Bonus for a chilli coriander lover.

High hopes dashed! Still hopeful they can improve.. I really wanted this place to be good.
This was my second attempt.
We have a shortage of decent Burmese places in Melbourne. Only one good restaurant and one good cafe.
The price for Mohinga was alarming but I gave it a go.
Big mistake. The packet stuff you get from the Burmese deli in Werribee is better.
I've had pea and ham soup tastier than the curry we were served. This was RMIT student cafe standard.
Guys - lift your game!
If you have Burmese staff (we saw and heard none) then let them do their stuff.
If not ... get some!
This restaurant is needed so get some help and start cooking real Burmese food ... PLEASE!!!
Until then, charge more realistic prices.
Mucho respecto for trying though!
I'll give it one more go in the future out of pure hope!

Had a great pre-football meal. The staff were really great and the food was delicious !!!

Beautiful decor, ok food, ordinary staff. We came here for dinner last night. First impressions - beautiful place. Good service. Then it went downhill from there. The arrogant waiter was one of those ppl who doesn't write things down. Needless to say it meant we were chasing forgotten items. The samosas arrived cold however they were quite tasty. They wait until they have a tray of food to take around the restaurant - our samosas stayed on that tray too long. Then our mains came - fish curry and chicken aloo. Both quite whatever 7/10. We chased up the paratha (bread) 3 times and they had the nerve to wait until the full tray of food and put it on our table after we had finished and our plates were taken. Poor form. What are we supposed to eat it with? We raised our eyebrows .. 'Sorry for the delay'. You mean the forgotten food? It should have been on the house! Then we asked for the bill and they added a credit card surcharge. We hadn't planned to pay with a credit card. We asked them to remove it, they said ok but they put it through on eftpos with the charge anyway. They don't even wait to see how you'll pay. Who charges a surplus for credit card in a high end restaurant? They also added a previously unmentioned charity donation and had the nerve to ask about a tip. We went to the counter to pay our own bill and this was the loser that forgot our bread all night. Here's a tip - write down our order next time and visit our table within 20 minutes of us finishing our meal so we don't have to line up to ask for a bill. We will not return!

Burma Love. I have been here about 4 times, I just love it. I always go for the banquet, loads of yummy food for the price. Love the crunch to each dish!

Had the $40 lunch menu. It was great!! So much food and dessert was delicious!

Perfect. We came here at the weekend, initially when we first arrived we were told by the host that there was a 15 minute wait, they took our name and number and said they would call us when a table became available, 10 minutes later we got a call but we had just bought a drink, the lady told us that it was fine and not rush finishing drinks the table was ours.

When we arrived at the restaurant we had been remembered by the host who showed us our table and asked whether we enjoyed our drinks, we felt this was a nice touch as most hosts would just show you your table and spark no conversation.

After being given a menu spiel by our waiter, who suggested if we didn't want to make any decisions then the banquet was the best option, so we obliged and picked the $69 banquet and plumped for a $49 bottle of sav blanc which we felt was extremely reasonable

The best non decision ever

Everything stood out, from the delicious potato cakes with lamb and yogurt to the tea-leaf salad and the beef ribs just melted of the bone. There was plenty of food for the 2 of us, the timing of the food was great as was the friendly service, even wiping down the table after every course was a nice touch.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Burma Lane and will be back in the near future with friends.
Shreerao7
Underwhelming for the price you pay!!!. Was having great expectations given the decor and reviews. 14$ for samosa when you can get the same for 2$ outside lol nothing special about it. The lamb was mediocre given u pay 30$ for it..can get the same at other places for cheaper. not recommending to other friends and not coming back again.
Soulfoodie
Disappointing. Came here expecting good things as I love Red Spice Road. Service was average and food was very average for the price. Pork belly, which is a signature dish at red spice, was dry and very overdone with leathery skin instead of crackling - almost feel like they shouldn't have bothered to serve it as it was clearly not right. The other dishes were ok but nothing stood out. Would rather go back to red spice any day.

he menu features fresh, vibrant flavours from the region, with influences from the many cultures of modern and ancient Burma. The lofty venue is split over two levels, blending an eclectic style of traditional and modern elements. Betel leaf, beef short ribs, pickled tea leaf salad (staple of Burmese cooking) are some of the goodies you can expect to eat here. Very Disappointing. A group of us went for dinner last night based on feedback and some general reviews. This is part of the Red Spice Road group and the photos on the web site certainly didn't come close to our meal. Based on various feedback we went for the 2nd banquet (which we rarely do) as the servings are small and this is the only way to be sure everyone will get to taste everything. The whole meal was disappointing and the main reason was the flavours were just out of kilter and unbalanced. Betel leaf was OK but fillings were small, fried Tofu was bland and the salad was tasteless, Chicken Wings were good and Tea Leaf salad interesting. Lamb curry and Pork belly were just poor, with the lamb flavour strange and the pork over cooked and dry. The most silly dish was the fish & noodles .... Rangoon Mohinga. Fish was ok but essentially it sits on a bowl of soup with asian soft noodles ...... served only with a spoon so there is no way you can extract the noodles without an almighty mess. Desert was largely untouched by the group and the wine list was full of regional choices but brands largely unheard of. Wine prices certainly far too high for what was in the bottle and we tried several. Service was also disappointing but that was largely because there were not sufficient floor staff. The place was essentially full and the couple of staff there were run off their feet. Plenty of other choices nearby with much better food and value.

Overall good experience. Went here last night (23/3) with friends (table of 5). We drifted here almost by mistake as Mammasita our original choice had the usual line up out the door and a 30-45min wait! I'm glad we did end up at Burma Lane - I have visited the sister Restaurant Red spice QV and was sure to expect good things based on that experience! We had some Smashed Sweet Potato, Broad Bean & Cashew Samosas to start and they were super - washed down with fresh Tiger beer (on tap) - For main I had the Wet Spice wok-fried Chopped Chicken w/ Noodles, Cucumber, Chilli, Crispy Shallot & Green Onion Garnish - this dish had a great kick to it and would highly recommended it - My fellow diners had pork belly - that looked amazing too- the Restaurant itself is a great fit-out, very clean and crisp - the only small down note was with the service - I think we had a new waitress and her service was a little wayward although she was trying her level best and knew the menu and made some insightful and wise suggestions with entrée sizes etc - However the biggest disappointment was at the end when she more or less made an announcement to the table about tipping - it was somewhat odd and awkward in the delivery as she suggested we could tip if we felt "it was warranted however it was entirely up to us" - I would have thought that customers wouldn't need to be prompted about this - surely if you want to tip - you tip - think we could have done without the American style - not so subtle suggestion - just not a great way to round out an otherwise terrific dining experience!

we were ecstatic to have stumbled upon one of the best meals of our lives.

Burma Lane can be found on Little Collins Street. Burma Lane is the new sister restaurant to Red Spice Road and has been open since November 2013. With its stunning chic decor and the fresh menu, I was very much looking forward to the evening. Burma Lane has a menu broken down into two main sections: small bites and bigger bites. Smaller bites are small bite sized dishes and you would need to order one per person. The bigger bites are more main sized. The main sized dishes can be shared which was what we like to do as you can try more than one dish! To start we had the potato fritter filled with slow cooked lamb belly. And my god, it tasted like a potato cake you get from Flinders Street station but a more gourmet version. It was so delicious I nearly ordered two more just for me! We also ordered the 19th street crispy pork. This was delicious also, however, I did find the pork a tad dry for my liking although it was very tender. The dish had a bit of a sauce on the plate, but I think

Flavour overkill!. After eating out at sister restaurant Red Spice Road, I was looking forward to Burma Lane. We were there as a party of 4 and we ordered the banquet. The food was a flavour explosion, but it felt like total over kill. Every dish had such strong flavours, that it ruined it. There was nothing subtle about it and normally I am all in for strong Asian flavours, but this meal felt like I had drunk a bottle of fish sauce. The menu was over priced for the banquet (compared to what we have paid at RSR). The wine menu was ridiculously over priced, entry level $70. Are you serious!!! Service was friendly but unfortunately I won't come back as nothing special. Sorry Burma Lane!

Average. Some dishes were nice but for the most part most of it was just average. Pretty expensive, especially the drinks.
Liz
Menu. Seriously none of the food taste like traditional burmese cuisine! , mo hin ga was a joke! Sorry to be so harsh.
Servings were small and expensive.

There were 6 in my party and the i feel the cost of the dinner was ridiculously priced.

Nice food. We enjoyed dinner at Burma Lane. The space is appealing, service very friendly and attentive without being obtrusive, and the food creative and tasty. We had potato and shredded lamb cakes as well as the tea leaf salad for starters, followed by the rockling, turmeric cauliflower, pork belly, chicken aloo, and whitebait fritters. The tea leaf salad was the standout but everything was very good, and plenty of food for five adults and a three-year old. With a heavily marked up bottle of red ($20 in store => $60 at the table) the bill came to about $60 per person, which is reasonable for an up-market restaurant. Good experience, will go again.

Amazing food, excellent service from an English guy and a girl with glasses, beautiful dirty martini. Didn't feel rushed even though we dined late
Boppy Chick
Pretty bland food. I thought the food overall was bland and uninspiring. It had great potential and the smells were great but it just didn't do it for me. A lot of the dishes seemed to taste like nothing and there was no variation between tastes. Also some dishes were over salty and other dishes were over sugary.

We had for entree:
Betel leaf - pretty bland and boring
Smashed sweet potato samosas - this was actually pretty good and I really liked it but my friends thought it was way too salty

For main
Wet Spice wok-fried Chopped Chicken w/ Noodles - I hated this dish so much one of the worst I have had out - was extremely boring and bland
Rangoon Mohinga - boring, tasteless, unmemorable
Paratha filled with eggplant and chickpeas - billed by the waiter as the best dish - extremely bland, boring, tasteless and unmemorable
Rich beef, potato and pickled lime curry - my partner liked this one but again I found it very bland
Roasted pork belly - this was the only main I really liked and it is done better elsewhere - was a bit too heavy on the sugar - not bad though.

Overall I do not recommend this place.

Asian fusion done well. Great little place, tucked away, excellent service
Shwetagandhi25
Like it but Overpriced !!. The only one thing I liked on the menu was the betelnut leaf salad. The ambience is good, but the food doesn't make the cut.
BobbiAndMelbourne
My partner and I chose this restaurant after finding it was connected to another of our Favourites - Red Spice Road, and after reading the menu we knew we had to try it ASAP!
We did arrive earlier than our booking, however we were able to be seated promptly which was nice. One thing we have learnt in Melbourne - Most places you cant book, and you will be waiting!
We ordered some cocktails to start - which were delicious!
Appetisers - Chilli and Lemongrass Pork, Samosas and Potato and Spicy Shredded Lamb. All of these were exceptional, full of flavour and made the excitement for the Main Meal heighten.
For Mains - We ordered the crispy duck leg, and the Pork Belly. The crispy duck leg was quite disappointing - It was soggy, with not a sign of crispiness. The Masala potatoes were somewhat soft as well maybe a little overcooked, and the salad on the side was full of flavour. The Pork Belly was delicious, however we found from the pieces provided they were inconsistent. Some had that beautiful crisp top similar to Crème Brulee, whilst the others were soft which was a little disappointing. For dessert my heart was set on Rice custard crepe cake, pineapple sticky rice & caramelised banana ice cream, which I had seen on the menu prior to arriving at Burma Lane. I was very disappointed to hear that it was unavailable that night. All in all, the food was pleasant - Would I eat there again - Considering the Mains, and non action on the dessert front.. Probably Not - There are too many other places to try.

Beautiful meal. Went with a group of five so got to try several dishes. The betel leaf entree and shredded chicken salad were amazing! as was the cauliflower dish.. Calamari, lamb cakes, lamb curry all excellent. I would have liked more spice in the beef dish, but that is personal taste. Lovely decor, good service, friendly staff and reasonably priced. Will definitely be back!!
Courtney
Entrees and service were both fantastic, we had all of the starters and enjoyed them all, mains were average, the heavy noodles served with our chicken and fish dishes didn't match the nice fresh flavours of the dishes. Overall a nice setting, but would stick to smaller dishes and bypass the mains next time.
Antoniette
Great place. Great service. We had the fried lamb and potato balls, lime curry beef, pork belly and fish coconut lime and chilli salad. All was fantastic!!!! Will definitely be back.
Iamareasonableman
Excellent service delicious food. The duck leg is fantastic. An interesting cuisine, great to try a different profile of flavours and textures. Will return.
Redwine
Great place but food doesn't stand out. Visited on a Saturday night and although the restaurant was packed the service was faultless. Staff were friendly and attentive. We ordered a variety of dishes and whilst the pork belly and lamb potato cakes were tasty, none of the dishes really stood out. In saying that, it's worth the visit just for the ambience and reasonably priced wine list. It has the potential to be brilliant just needs a bit more wow factor on the menu.
Ann
I hope this is not what Burmese food really tastes like. I would assume given the trendy decor of this place, that the flavours are more "modern- Australian/Burmese fusion" than traditional Burmese. I've never had Burmese food so I came here with a group of 6 and an open mind. I was not a fan of the flavours and found them really, random. Given Burma's location, I understand that the cuisine would be influenced by Malaysian/Thai/Indian flavours and you can taste that it's a little bit of everyone, but just not quite enough punch or flavour in any of the dishes I had. Unfortunately, those funky condiments offered by the wait staff had to be stacked on to provide the enhancement that is really needed to give the dishes any sort of excitement. For the price and the tiny servings, I can't say it's worth it. I'm glad I tried it once, but I probably won't be going back again. The comments about the slow service is justified too - took us about 15 minutes to actually get the bill.
Megan
Yummy food but slow service. Not sure it's worth the price.. The food was delicious, but very pricy and small portion. We were here on a Tuesday night yet the service was very slow. I expected Burmese food to be down to earth, but the vibe of the restaurant was vey pretentious. Won't go back.

Sophisticated atmosphere G.... Sophisticated atmosphere
Great service very attentive
Highly recommended

What a dissapointment.. Heard great things but was bitterly disappointing. Slow food, slow service. Lift your game Burma Lane.

Highly recommend!!. Fantastic restaurant. Love the decor, friendly staff and the food is brilliant. Like a lot of others we had the pork belly. WOW!!!!!!!!!! INCREDIBLE!!

Desserts are amazing! Best I've ever had-I have tried a few lol! Up there with quay in Sydney. Can't wait to go back!

Celebrated my birthday at Burma Lane last Saturday night. We, had a 5 course meal which was set at $65 which was value for money. The menu was delicious and the service was great. Highly recommended!!

OH! MY! GOD! That meal has to be the best I've ever had in Melbourne. There were 3 of us which ordered the pork skewers, lamb cakes, betel leaf for entre and ordered another serving of the lamb cakes as were so good. Then we shared the pork belly which was not overly sweet, the wok spice chicken and the slow cooked lamb. For desert the creme caramel with crunchy popcorn topped off the night. We were happily full and left with a smile from ear to ear. 10/10 Burma Lane. Thank you for the experience. I will get back to Peth and tell all to come and visit.
Pam
Very cool dining room, beautiful interior
Service was fine
Food was mostly good (especially the curries), although some of the noodle dishes were very bland
Good value - we shared food and paid only around 50/head (including drinks/dessert!)
Oh and the lychee mocktail was divine!

Highly recommend. Exquisite food and efficient friendly service

Delicious food, chilly room!. Impromptu dinner at Burma Lane, seated quickly without a booking.

Service was attentive, we were asked repeatedly if we were ready to order. This was enthusiasm rather than being rushed.

Small bites were tasty, beef skewer, lamb potato cake and soft shell crab.

Mains were delicious, goat curry, shan noodles and the tea leaf salad. Salad in particular was incredible!

Only downside was that the room was very cold so we left as soon as we finished eating.

Interesting, great food, reasonable prices, will be back (on a warmer night!).

Yay for booking!. Food & service were great and we're happy that the restaurant takes booking! hate waiting for 1.5 hr for a table at those restaurants who don't take booking ... parts of the charcoal pork ribs were dry & tough. other small plates & salad we ordered were fantastic, also enjoyed the mocktail!

Yum!. Went to Burma Lane last night for dinner with a friend. I had been to the sister restaurant Red Spice road which i love so my expectations were high, and it didn't disappoint.

The Service was fantastic, all the staff had a smile on their face and were extremely helpful. We had cocktails which were amazing, the Mandalay magic is especially good.

We had a variety of dish's but the potato cakes, pork belly and goat curry were stand outs, full of flavour and decent serves.

Overall a fantastic night, this restaurant is well worth a look!

I went to Burma Lane for the third time last night & I can not get enough of this place! The staff are very friendly (relaxed and not arrogant at all) and willing to go out of their way for you if you don't want something too chilli or spicy! The decor is high end, minimal but with an Asian flavor. I had 4 starters and a salad last night and I was absolutely stuffed! The waiter (nice easy going guy can't remember his name but English accent) asked if we wanted a main and I couldn't fit it in! I frequent red spice rd and the thing I like about Burma Lane is I leave satisfied and not feeling like I'm going to explode from over eating like at red spice. I'm not a Burmese expert but from the menu it does seem different to red spice rd. The white wine (sav blanc) and beers are very tasty. I've got my friends onto this place and they've also been back multiple times, I will be back again for more potato cakes and curries!

Really enjoyed it. Excel.... Really enjoyed it.

Excellent service from staff who are friendly and informative. Nice modern decor with a simple design. It still gives the whole place an intimate vibe.

Food is fantastic. Definitely different to Red Spice Road (which is Thai). This is Burmese food with a western and modern twist and is still a lovely fusion of Indian and Asian flavours. The palate is simple but is also adjustable to your liking by using the different sauces.

The feeling when you finish your meal is balanced. The food does not feel heavy but rather light (which leaves room for dessert!). If you're not after a big main meal, it is very easy to pick 2-4 different entrees and it will be sufficient enough and you'll still get a great mix of flavours.

Each selection compliment each other so it is easy to mix and match.

Would highly recommend to family and friends!
Beauty_48
Ruined Burmese food. I think the chef got it all wrong. I am Burmese and many of the dishes are no where near what Burmese food suppose to be. I understand it is his "take" on our cuisine but the flavors need to be similar. I think Burmese Cafe is better than this one. At least the portions are way bigger than Burma lane.
Aficionado.imports
Overpriced and nothing unique here. The food at Burma Lane is overpriced for what you get. Their menu seems to be trying to pull of some sort of modern Asian fusion with a focus on SE Asian style dishes (i.e. coconut milk & curry based dishes). We also ordered an entree of Salmon and they brought of a very stingy portion of sliced sashimi.

Overal: insanely disappointed

I don't think this place knows what it wants to be. Modified street food but over the top prices. The wine list is ridiculously expensive for very common wines.

The food was so ordinary. $6.50 for one broadbean fritter. The Burmese rockling dish was $25 but didn't have enough salt or taste. The duck dish had over cooked noodles.

The decor doesn't fit the menu. The overhead ceiling lights were overly bright on our table.

The service was even worse: wrong dish delivered, inattentive, soulless and inexperienced staff. We were not even acknowledged as we left, and we walked past the register as they were putting our cash payment in the til.

I don't know why I even left a tip.

Huge massive waste of money.
Shitake
Nice experience. Nice space and flavours were big and hit the spot.
Downsides were the serving sizes of the main dishes (small for the price) and the desserts were pretty average.
Jojo
I went today for lunch after reading the review in the current ABC Delicious Magazine. I had been looking forward to it for quite a few weeks now. Very disappointed.....betel leaf chicken was a good start. However shredded chicken noodles was barely luke warm as was the tofu noodles. All the ingredients were there in the bowl, however the flavor wasn't. Bland not really much taste to both dishes. Desert wasn't overwhelmingly good either. Don't order the coconut ice cream if you want value for money. It tasted good but was a scoop of ice cream fit for a mouse- tiny tiny. Mini ice cream scoop for $5!! Such a shame I walked away disappointed.
Iheartfood
Really fresh flavours and delicious food. We had the potato cakes filled with lamb belly to start off with followed by chicken turmeric curry and the flat rice noodles with tofu puffs. The potato cakes looked amazing and tasted as good as they looked. The curry was flavoursome, and the chicken was extremely tender. It was not that spicy, though. The noodles were a tad underwhelming; I loved the tofu and the vegetables but found the noodles too starchy and not that tasty. The place is very elegantly decorated, and our server was great. I would definitely go again, but would not order the noodles again.

Nothing outstanding, but pleasant enough.... ...is how I would describe our night out at Burma Lane. Sad, because I went with a group of "foodies", who expect delicious food, standout dishes and good service, particularly when we have had the restaurant on our collective wishlist for a while, and it just didn't quite live up to expectations. The "feed me" banquet provides probably just enough food for $65 (although I DO have a large appetite, and probably could have squeezed in another dish or two!) with the betel leaf entree good, and the potato cakes with lamb were delicious and different. Sadly, the pork belly, which I was looking forward to upon perusing the menu, was soggy (rather than the advertised crunchy) but at least the beef cheek curry was nice and comforting, and the rockling in the "Funky Moningha" tasted fresh. We finished on a semolina cake with palm sugar ice cream, which again was "nice"...and we sneakily ordered the ginger and coffee cheesecake to share amongst our group...and that was also yum...but certainly no other superlatives come to mind. Overall, the food was okay, but lacked an exciting "wow factor" or "flavour hits" to be outstanding. Having said all that, the staff were attentive and pleasant, and the restaurant looked sleek and classy. Some tweaks are required to "spice it up", and until that happens, I probably won't be back.
Iliketoeat
Good to try but wouldn't go back. Tea leaf salad was a highlight as were the semolina cake and the mango sago dessert but overall the serves were way too small and the prices exorbitant for what you get. I haven't had Burmese before so didn't mind trying but it didn't wow me.
Somebodyfabulous
Very average. I love Red Spice Road so was hoping for good things at Burma Lane but unfortunately it didn't deliver. The food was over-priced and nothing special. For example, five very-average-sized prawns, squashed and flattened in a banana leaf for $29. I'm happy to pay $29 for five prawns, but I expect them to be plump, tasty and come with more than a banana leaf.

The crispy pork belly was soggy. The schezuan beef salad was not spicy. The soft shell crab was very blah. The lamb and potato cake was the only tasty thing in my opinion.

The service was not polished. Staff were unaware of if the house blend of white wine was was dry or sweet. It didn't really matter though, as they were out of it, so I had to buy more expensive wine instead. We were seated opposite the bar where the coffee machine was loud and there was a lot of noise from the kitchen. Booked well in advance, so didn't expect one of the worst seats in the venue.

Overall - disappointed.

Delish. There's a certain hipster try-hard element to Burma Lane which can and will be offputting to some (e.g., the dinner soundtrack was a curious mix of Joy Division, Radiohead, Talking Heads and Fleetwood Mac), but taken purely on food and the experience of it, Burma Lane was great. In particular, the pickled tea salad is remarkable - a mix of interesting textures and flavours I've not previously experience. So delicious. Other meals were also flavoursome yet subtle and, pleasingly, the serving sizes were quite large, so you get value for money. Service was pleasant if not a tad robotic. I would highly recommend dining here
Emmy_be
Amazing service - friendly, happy and true hospitality. Now to the food - amazing, flavours are fantastic and you get to make it has spicy as you enjoy. Great variety and if your not sure ask your friendly waiter, only too happy to help your selection!
Restaurant has an amazing feel, great atmosphere and decor is interesting.
Cocktails are fanatsic. Wine list is great.

Definitely worth a visit.

Disappointed doesn't cut it!. - Nice location
- Friendly staff
- Nice decor. Very tasteful representation of Burma and pleasing not to see the gaudy mimicry of by-gone decor some South East Asian restaurants drown patrons in.
- Extremely limited menu considering that many Burmese curries use a similar base
- Waiting staff need to get the names right of the Burmese condaments they present - Burmese food is not yet all that common, but its not as 'exotic' and 'last frontier-ish' as some like to think it is
- I must say it was a delicious potato / lamb cake, but perhaps they could have done a more realistic Burmese version of this by using fish (all over the Shan States). Lamb is about as popular in Burma as black pudding is in Northcote!
- the tea leaf salad was over priced for what it was - minus the sprinkling of cabbage and tomoato, its only about $3 in the packet (Yes, Yuzana packaged tea leaves are pretty easy to recognise!). The least you could have done was give us the other 60% of the packet you didn't serve us!
- my biggest issue was with the so-called chicken curry. It was so NOT like anything I've eaten in my 15 yrs of regular travel all over the country! I couldn't even taste the fish-sauce or the Burmese Masala (the equivalent of eating a meat pie at the footy without sauce). It was more like something from a Westfield foodcourt bain-marie - sorry to all those hard working students!
- one last thing though, the number of awesome vegetable dishes from across the country NOT on the menu is embarrassing. It was like a nightmare I once had, when I visited Aunty Maria and there was no lasagna in the fridge!
Seriously, sort it out!
I wont whinge about the over-priced bill because my friend's company was worth it!

Badass,. Loved it. Had a lot of wine. Come here.

Great flavours. This place is almost hidden along little Collins amongst all the office buildings. Modern decor with a very Melbourne vibe to it. A big mural of Aung San Suu Kyi as you enter. Very friendly and attentive service with some good help in deciding a dish. Went for the soft shell crab entree - had a nice crunch to it! Followed by the ling and chicken curries - great flavours. The dessert was a bit of a miss - coconut/pandan jelly, just go for the coconut ice cream it was nice. Overall nice intro to Burmese cuisine and a definite one to try in the CBD.
Chillilou
Underwhelmed. Maybe i just don't like Burmese food either .... it was all quite nice, and the little pots off condiments for erxtra flavour were great, but the 'spicy' dishes needed a big kick of chilli before i would say they were spicy... and it all seems it needs a bit of zing to liven up the food and freshen it up .. whatever the burmese equivalent of garam masala is, or a big squeeze of lime over everything. The service is very efficient and friendly, presentation was great, lovely bowls and plates and plenty of advice/ recommendations about what to eat f required. Favourite dish was the pork belly special with harissa. That harissa was fab !

This place absolutely blew my mind!! Highly recommended. Trust me I'm a good judge after growing up on khaut swe, mohingha and pickled tea leaves. Burmese food is on the map! Pls open one in Perth!!!!!

Came tonight for a team christmas dinner and the best word to describe the evening was BRILLIANT! Company excluded, the venue was gorgeous, service from the staff and restaurant manager amazing, cocktails (mojitos!) and wine clean refreshing and delicious and the food was interesting, flavourful and inhaled by everyone at the table! We let the restaurant manager choose our menu for us (taking into account dietary requirements) and all food was outstanding, but my personal favourites were the potato cake small dish, the khuat swe noodle dish and the melt in your mouth beef cheek curry! Cant wait to come back in 2014!

Hmm, maybe I just don't like Burmese food?. As a huge fan of Red Spice Rd, I was really excited to try Burma Lane. But after 3 visits, I'm still disappointed. Terribly understaffed (although staff are lovely, they seem very stressed), and the food - while decent - is extremely expensive for what it is. Or I possible don't enjoy Burmese food.

Maybe give them a bit more time to find their feet; I'm not giving up just yet.
Becca
Enjoyed the experience thoroughly! Highly recommend trying this place.
The food was fantastic and very flavourful. My favourites were the potato cake and the betal leaf chicken dishes from the small bites and I enjoyed the pork ribs from the bigger bites section.
The desserts were sensational yet not too rich, the jasmine rice flavoured icecream was different but definitely one I'd have again and again.
I tried two of the cocktails which were summery and fresh, and went down a treat!
The service overall was great. The staff were attentive and enthusiastic about the food!
The atmosphere was fun and relaxed and I would happily enjoy eating at Burma Lane again.
Vivivivio
Great service + decent vegan. Great little place. Excellent service and much more relaxed than red spice road. Mentioned I was vegan and the waiter did up one of the delicious tea leaf salads especially and did threw it in for free (!); had this in addition to the vegan main (tofu noodles) and coconut ice cream. Definitely worth a try!
Kerri
The food took me back to my travels through Myanma (Burma). Great food, friendly & knowledgable staff. Every dish was full of flavour and the decor is tasteful and comfortable.
Tony
Had the best of Burma and I have to say it was Awesome! Really creative dishes that will have you trying more and more. Service was a little average but food makes up for it
Richard
Burmese?. I don't know much (anything) about Burmese food. I am not even sure this place is claiming to be a Burmese restaurant. It doesn't matter too much, this place is doing most things right.

I happened to eat here two days in a row recently so got to try most things on the lunch menu - it's a share food kind of place. Meals are categorised as "Small" and "Bigger". Most of what we tried was good. Special mention to the Pickled Tea Leaves Salad and the Pork Belly dish. Beef cheek curry, beef salad, potato cake, betel leaves....all good. I would give the soft shell crab (too much batter) and pork ribs (a bit bland) a miss.

Prices are reasonable and plenty of wines to choose from. The fit out is the same as for Mahjong Black that was in the space before. Room is a bit cold and service a bit slow but at this time of year people have plenty of time and I am guessing restaurants are getting a lot of unexpected walk ins.

Definately worth a try.
Hayley Anna
I want the golden egg curry and the pickled tea leaves salad for breakfast, lunch and dinner! So delicious!
Cinnamoroll
Tried it for lunch after reading much reviews. Didnt like it. Had the beef salad & it was extremely salty & unpleasant to eat on its own. The Pandan coconut jelly looks pretty but bland compared to jelly you can get from Chinatown. Over priced for what it's worth. Not going back again!
Raging Rose
The best thing about #BurmaLane was my company and the bottle of Pasha Mama Chardonnay we shared. Bland was the taste du jour here, despite spice-scintillating promises featured on the well written menu and by our flame haired waitress. Will not be back sadly.
Jason H
After reading some favourable reviews of this restaurant, My girlfriend and I excited to check it out.

The staff were friendly and enthusiastic and the decor was well executed. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended. We started with the betel leaf, chicken chop and pork belly, which were all quite good, followed by the chicken salad, which was about the standard you could pick up from any local Thai restaurant.

We went for the goat curry and celebration fish (special), which both lacked flavour and sophistication. It really seemed liked the chef had opted for bland in fear of challenging the conservative palate, which is dissapointing for a restaurant which promises an authentic experience.

If you like your curry nice and safe and don't mind paying top shelf prices for very basic fare, then you will surely enjoy the experience
Galloping Gourmet
Followed the hype & are lunch here today with a friend. We were both underwhelmed, it was very bland food not well cooked. The soft shell crab was cooked in oil too cool & the lamb shoulder curry made ultimate sin of being boring. I agree with another reviewer....if you want asian food in the CBD go to Chin Chin or Longrain
MRigg
Delicious food! Best pork belly ever. Fair price and not as busy as Red Spice Road. Totally recommend it! Definitely coming back for the Sago and Coconut pudim.
Hayley Wolfert
Had lunch here with a large group, we were seated separately (up stairs) and because of this it seems the wait staff completely forgot about us. We had a group of about 12, and had a banquet for $35 each. The portion sizes brought out for each course were REALLY small, I think we all left hungry. As for the food, the chicken betel leaf was really nice, we had the chicken noodle dish and tea leaf salad. They were ok, not overly flavoursome. We then had the beef curry. Quite nice however it just lacked something in the flavour. Overall it was OK, wasn't overly impressed. Prefer red spice road - especially for their banquet portion sizes and flavour!
Fiona Alexandra White
Went here for a Team Lunch, it was the WORST experience ever! Payed $30 for the lunch special, meals were TINY and left starving after and had to buy maccas! Don't go if your hungry! Longgrain beats this place any day!
Ashleigh Darq
Delicious and not too heavy. Beautiful Summery menu. The 2 salads we tried were both a stand out. We had tip top service from start till finish in every respect, knowledgeable, friendly, attentive and of course the meals were just impeccable in both taste and presentation!

The pork ribs melted in my mouth and all the wines we sampled as a part of the banquet were absolutely amazing.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - especially if you're after a meal that's not going to make you feel bloated - just a healthy full! Amazing. oh, and LOVE LOVE LOVE the artwork. Pinot noir was my fave wine fyi. See you again Burma Lane xx

Wonderfully different to anything I have experienced. Fantastic mix of flavours and great selection of vegetarian options. At $6 to $9 the small bites are a great option to try out the variety and other sized dishes are great value for money, especially if you value flavour. I will definitely be back

Treasure on Little Collins. Great food, great service, get the bloody banquet! Tucked away on Little Collins St, Burma Lane is an addition to my Melbourne favourites, been here twice now, and no disappointment so far. Staff are charming and attentive, no big wait for meals. I'm a beer lover, but the Swami Delight mocktail is just sensational!

As mentioned above, let the chefs fix up a banquet for you and sit back!

Such simple dishes such as Shan Noodles are bursting full of flavour, with your own choice of condiments, you can pick and choose flavours to your liking.

Semolina cake, Sago & coconut pudding are two brilliant desserts you must try.

For those complaining about portion sizes verse prices, there is a Hungry Jacks around the corner, on Russel St, I hear you can upsize your fries there!

Either Reduce Prices or Increase Portion Sizes. Mohinga "Bigger Bite" is $25 for approx. 8 cubes of overcooked rockling. The saving grace of this dish was the flavoursome turmeric, lemongrass and tomato which acted as a great sauce for the noodles.

Found the Beef Cheek to be very tender and mango and eggplant slices were a nice touch. However, the sauce in this dish could have been thicker and didn't pack the punch as expected. I hate to say it, but I think it was a little bland. Compared to the price of the Mohinga Rockling, $28 was a little more reasonable however, portion isn't too generous.

Stand out dish was the Pickled Tea Leaf Salad at $14. The crunchy broad beans are a delight and so tasty combined with the other ingredients. Again, such a shame that its such a small serving! At $14 for a salad I would have expected twice the amount we received.

A handful of steamed white rice is $3 per person.

Don't bother with the Land of Milk and Honey mocktail. Was very watery and not as creamy or thick as one would expect from a coconut milk based drink. Didn't have much flavour - perhaps papaya and honey are too subtle to come through all the ice!

Service was good, waiter was attentive and orders were taken promptly. Dishes were served approx. 15 minutes after serving.

Unfortunately, I don't think I will be back. Total bill was $78 for 2 people (2x bigger bites, 1x salad and 1x mocktail) and I left hungry. A bit of a shame, as I am a big fan of Red Spice Road in McKillop Street.

Service: 8/10
Food: 6.5/10

Food was reasonable, but definately over priced

At the price of at least 24 dollars a main, the portions were unreasonably small. Yes I understand this is a modern Asian, but for the price I don't think it is unreasonable to expect more

Great food. The potato cakes are soooo good! All the food we had was really good. Excellent service and a great atmosphere. Will def go back, highly recommended

Up There!. From the moment we walked in the staff were super attentive, and made us feel welcome and relaxed. It's a spilt-level modern layout inside, with enough room to comfortably hold a lot of people. The cocktail list isn't extensive, but there are some great flavours on there - the mango stood out for me in the "Sugar and Spice". Deciding to taste a whole range of dishes, we started with the potato cakes - a must have! the soft shell crab - another must have! Curry puff rice noodles - a rich coconut flavour. Pickled tea leaf salad - the best flavour, and texture I've had in a salad for a long time. Beef Cheek - very rich, and melt in your mouth meat, and finally the lamb ribs - also melt in your mouth. Everything was excellent, and I can't wait to go back and try all the other dishes. All up we paid $150, which I didn't think was too bad considering we tried so many dishes, and left very full! Well done Burma Lane!

The food was expensive and served in pretty small portions but absolutely delicious - the pork belly 'little bite' is definitely recommended! The service could be improved but hats off to the waitress with red/coral coloured hair (don't know her name sorry!) - she was lovely, attentative, knowledgable and accommodating for the gluten-free and peanut-free requirements of our table!

Dinner last night 16th Nov. Food was good, the salad dish had chilli overload that dominated all flavours. Needs refining. Disappointed that out of 5 desserts on the menu only one was available.
Great atmosphere and friendly service. Most likely teething problems as its the first week open.

Disappointing. Rocked up at 6.15pm on Saturday 16th November in the hopes of supporting this new restaurant (opens at 6). After conferring amongst 3 staff members for a table of one (just myself), was told nothing was available until 8.30pm. Given I had no booking, there were a total of 5 customers inside at this early dinner hour. I would have ordered and eaten probably within 20mins, surely you could have let me know that you had a free table for 30mins? I'm the guy who also kindly informed you guys that your website incorrectly states that you are located between Exhibition and Spring St, when it's actually Exhibition and Russell St.

As you walk into Burma Lane, the high ceilings and prominent artwork of Aung San Suu Kyi give the atmosphere a positive vibe and feeling of freedom. Columns of picture frames are hung against the wall with images and artifacts representing Burmese culture. I went to Burma Lane with my family as a post Christmas dinner. Our choice of restaurant was significant because it was where my Dad was from. Although my dad is no longer with us, it was really special to taste the delicious flavours from his culture that reminded us of his cooking. The Mohingha was a fave. The waiters were friendly and attentive which made dinner at Burma Lane a great experience. Burma Lane – The three condiments. Before we ordered, we were introduced to three condiments to accompany our meals. There was a Burmese style sweet and sour sauce, a chilli relish and Balachan, which was like a dried shrimp mix. Burma Lane – Swami delight. My brother ordered a mocktail called ‘Swami delight’ whic

It’s a nice place to enjoy a cocktail or some mocktails with your food and I always enjoy a good drink with experimental and Asian-inspired mixes. RSR impressed me with a mocktail once, so I eagerly tried and enjoyed a THAI DAI ($9, right) which had lychee juice, pomegranate, kaffir lime. It even had a pomegranate in it, which was impressive. The lychee gave it a good degree of sweetness and the minty taste was not overpowering as it is in some drinks, allowing the pomegranate to shine.
Typical Food Blog
Whilst we enjoyed Burma Lane and the staff was wonderful and facilitated our many late guests (oops), we found the food a bit hit and miss. I’d recommend the pork belly and lamb cakes but the rest weren’t too exciting.
Confessions Of A Little Piggy
Just imagine a huge melting pot of culture, ingredients and flavours from Thailand (Fish Sauce), India (Spices) and China (Sichuan). And there you have it - Burmese cuisine. The space located on Little Collins Street oozes chic with its high ceilings, and great walls adorned with hanging art and artefacts. The most prominent being the artwork of Aung San Suu Kyi titled ‘Freedom To Lead’ which lights up the room. Going hand in hand with this painting is the ongoing theme of the Burmese birdcages, which symbolises freedom. Swami delight A concoction of apple, cardamom syrup, agave and indian yoghurt. Burma Lane has newly opened in the venue that once used to be Mahjong Black – on Little Collins street – and serving up traditional Southeast Asian flavours from Burma. This new venue comes from the people who brought us Red Spice Road – Adam Trengove and Shaun Moorhouse. The interior hasn’t changed too much from when it used to be Mahjong Black but there are accents of Burma all around the venue. The signature style of Red Spice Road with large paintings of women continues upstairs here at Burma Lane with four colourful portraits of women on the back wall. There are birdcage light fittings as well but the centrepiece is the iconic “Freedom to Lead” image of Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi by Sherpard Fairey– which is on the right hand side wall as you walk into the venue and go up the stairs. There is seating downstairs as well upstairs in this split level venue which consists of wooden table and chairs, finished with terracotta coloured plates that sit on top of the menu
Spoonfuls Of Wanderlust
Would we go back? The flavours were nice, but they didn't knock my socks off. The decor was cosy and intimate, but as we were seated upstairs, the service was a bit scarce. Plus, it also felt a little 'same-same-but-different'. Maybe with time, Burma Lane will unveil its own charming personality... but for now, Red Spice Road is the clear winner when compared to its little sister.

As for the pork, it was perfectly cooked and the meat just collapsed into heavenly mouthfuls of tenderness. The crackle layer was flavoured, as was the accompanying harissa.

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of dining with the lovely ladies of Gastronomical Ramblings & Confessions of a Little Piggy at Burma Lane, which is the latest restaurant brought to us by the same people behind Red Spice Road. It was a hot summers day, so we all decided to try the mocktails from Burma Lane’s drink menu. I went for the pretty Thai Dai which consists of Lychee Juice, Pomegranate Juice & Kaffir Lime. It was the perfect refreshing drink and was much needed after my whole drama of locking my car keys in the boot whilst retrieving my camera before meeting up for dinner. The drink was strong in lychee flavour, with very subtle notes of pomegranate. I couldn’t really taste the kaffir lime. Really love this mocktail. That night, we decided to order a variety small dishes and a salad. The first d

Crunchy and crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy and flavoursome with a beautiful piquancy from the yoghurt. This as super tasty but pretty hefty on the stomach!
Eat And Be Merry Crew
Burma Lane was a wonderful introduction to Burmese food. For the seven of us, we ordered a selection of entrees to share. With a couple of chilli-wimps and Kiddo with us, we were steered towards the less spicy-hot type dishes. Having said that, the less spicy dishes did not mean any less aromatic. This was the Potato and Shredded Lamb Cakes ($16). The lamb was tenderly cooked and served as a base for a pie of potato on top. It was smothered in minty yoghurt. This was very moreish. Being a tofu fanatic, I could not resist ordering the Shan Tofu with smashed tomatoes with herbs and peanuts ($14). This was perhaps the blander of the entrees but the tofu was fried spot on. The last of the selection of entrees included the Pork Skewers with chilli and lemongrass ($13). There's three to a plate (someone snaffled one of them before I could take the photo). These were so unexpectedly tender for a skewer. Whilst it did have chilli, it was not overpowering, even Kiddo managed a skewer. The star of the show in my mind was the Roasted Pork Belly with spiced caramel sauce and herbal salad ($29). OMG, is all I can say. It had the crispy skin of a great piece of roast pork with the tender slow cooked meat underneath. The herby salad cut through the richness and there was a sweet caramelness which really added depth. It was to die for. This was the Whitebait Fritters with chrysanthemum leaf, tomato relish and mint ($18). This was so crunchy and light for who doesn't love a crispy something-something? Th
