Hello everyone,
Looking for the best, consistently amazing coffee in Melbourne CBD. Then there is only 1 place. DUKES!! lol
My latest strong skinny latte was perfect, a good amount of milk froth, a great tasting coffee flavour, not too scalding hot so I could drink the coffee straight away and the option of no lid. If you want to have an amazing coffee, then look no further. This place rocks.

Dukes still do one of the best coffees in the CBD. I called in for a strong skinny latte and it was great.
The flavour was nice, there was some good milk froth, and the service excellent. And the coffee appears to be constantly tested and measured to make sure that your coffee is going to be good every time.
Ah consistency ... this is my kind of place, and definitely worth a visit if you want a good coffee just off Swanson Street.

Exemplary Melbourne coffee - delicate but well-balanced with a hint of bitterness. Excellent service as well :) Big enough to stay for awhile but very packed.
Dukes is an institution in the Melbourne cafe scene for very good reason. This tiny spot often has people lined out the door; all eager for the excellent coffee available here. The limited seating means it's always full and bustling, whilst even more people queue up for takeaways.
We were lucky to grab a seat at the bar, which is always a bonus. The atmosphere here is electric, and the decor is modern and comfortable. Staff are run off their feet, but all the baristas are lovely and friendly and welcoming.
Our coffee was of fantastic quality, and we paired it with a white chocolate and raspberry blondie. The display cabinet overflows with pastries and cakes such as croissants, slices and cookies. Dukes is more of a quick stop kind of place, but you will never be disappointed with the quality of coffee here.
The coffee here is really hyped but I think it's just okay. That said, the raisin scroll is well worth a visit. It's soft, buttery and not too sweet. I also love the fitout of this cafe although it's small, so don't expect to stay for long.
Love the smooth coffee in what is a retro coffee house. Super quick, friendly but attentive staff in a small but we'll utilised space with a cool vibe
Dukes never disappoints if you're wanting to grab a coffee or hot chocolate. Their drinks are always on top and the quality never falters.
They use quality coffee beans/chocolate, the vibe is great and the staff are friendly. Wouldn't recommend buying the pastries as they can be a bit bland are a bit expensive.
But overall, amazing, would definitely keep coming here.
Quite a popular cafe, it's always packed every time I walk past.
Standard 2 shots per small cup, which is a good strength for me.
The milk was steamed well, giving the coffee a nice velvety texture.
The flavour was nutty and milk chocolatey.
Very nice interior and lighting though, has a very cool ambiance.
Can't go wrong with coffee in Melbourne I guess. The long black is extremely rich and slightly creamy texture. The quantity is smaller than I'm used to so should have ordered a large. There is a no photography sign at the door. Which is interesting. There was a queue when I went in and it was pretty packed inside. Fed square is a short walk away so wasn't too bad to sit there with my coffee on a sunny day
A small cafe hidden in the middle of the city, very cute place, the coffee were really nice, service were decent, also have some yummy pastries.
There's a reason this place is considered to be pretty much the top of the game when it comes to Melbourne coffee.
I've never had a dud here, and will hit them up any time I have the misfortunate of having to brave the CBD.
I also love the 'no selfie' rules. Keep those insta-narcs at bay.
Amazing coffee in a specialty coffee shop in Melbourne. Their cold brew was awesome. They sell snacks and we had some sweet treats. Great service too.
Outstanding coffee, great service. Very busy store and not a lot of seats, so you might be squeezed up against some new people - but the coffee is worth it. Almond croissant was massive and delicious, and great value.
Really good coffee in downtown Melbourne. Definitely coming back next time I’m here. Really friendly staff member who served us. Even though it’s super busy on a mid afternoon the service is quick. Not a lot of seating inside but still got a seat by the time our coffee was made. If you want a sweet treat, the carrot cake will hit the spot!
This place can do no wrong. Absolutely amazing service, greeted with such intention, polite and generous feel. Always on top of the details of service.
AND then stunning coffee. From the range, texture tempreture and silky smooth taste. If you want to experience real coffee in Melbourne head to dukes they have you covered.
This place is always packed. Came in the afternoon and there was a long line. Small shop good with around 10 seats, suitable for takeaway. I was lucky to find a seat. Latte was nice, froth was smooth and coffee taste was strong.
One of the best coffees we have had till date, the Coffee aroma attracts many ongoing pedestrians.
Early mornings queues on the walkway gives you idea of the coffee quality.
Discovered this place by accident and I have to say this has been my go to spot of coffee in the city! The atmosphere is very relaxing and takes you out of the city stress. The coffee taste excellent and the customer service is very good too. However it can get quite busy in peak hours, but the wait is worth it!
This is one of my favourite coffees in Melbourne! The beans are awesome, and so happy that I can buy them to take home too. Only con is that it gets super busy and crowded, but I can see why given how good the brew is!
a friend of mine walked me here, they sure have the Best iced latte in this city of coffee 🥰🥰 hahaha.. compared to that big name with their ice latte in a bottle, which is not good 😢
Yes! Yes! Yes! I love this place. Efficient service and great coffee which is strong and makes me keep coming back for more. Don’t let the lines put you off. It’s worth it.
I love having flat white with almond milk at Dukes. The staffs are friendly, they explain to me which beans to try. They used their own beans.
Such a cute little coffee shop tucked away along Flinders Lane. It’s a dark and narrow little space, but it’s very cosy and the staff are all so friendly.
The coffee is spectacular! The lattes are really smooth and strong, not overly milk-y. I also tried the cold brew which was very intense and strong! So good on a hot day.
The croissants are really good too. Only $3.80 and they’re pretty big in size. Very light and airy which I enjoyed.
I like the coffee. one of the best coffee in Melbourne. it's situated in cbd area. worth a try although you'll find another good coffee in town.
This place exudes nothing but positive vibes.
Service is swift and friendly, coffee is one of the better ones I’ve had in the city.
Would a hundred percent return cause who says no to good coffee?!
Finally made it here! Quality coffee, good services! I had soy flat white, they used that Japanese soy milk hahaha. I really like it 👌🏻(but I reckon they increased the price a bit?hmmmm idk
Really good coffee shop in flinders lane. As soon as you walk in, you will know is a good coffee shop. Not trying to be hyperbolic but you will get what I mean if you go there yourself. Service is amazing as well.
Will I be back? Surely Yes!

This small little cafe on Flinders Lane is now my favourite cafe in Melbourne.
It's quite a small space (much more of a 'coffee to go' cafe), but it'll be my take-away spot in the city.
Ordered the iced filter coffee in December and the notes were so fruity and sweet, yet had bitter notes and it had such a deep flavour profile!
Love the decaf and caffeinated coffee from here - it is rich, chocolatey and superb. The place is really cosy and narrow with limited seating. The lighting is moody and dimmed. The sweet treats are hard to resist for an afternoon pick me up. Great place for a true Melbourne coffee experience.
Cozy ambience with warm atmosphere that invokes subtle classiness. I had a great decaf coffee with a chocolate and banana cake which as ok as it was relatively melted to my personal taste.
Finally managed to try this coffee on a weekday! Long queues but the baristas were efficient, so the line moved quickly. Coffees were strong, acidic with notes of chocolate.
After having a late night previously we decided it was time for second coffee. We headed towards Dukes coffee. The line looked a little long but we decided to give it a go anyway. We placed our order and grabbed a seat that had just become available. It was mid-morning yet the place was packed. We received our coffees really quickly and the service was great! I have saved this place for the next time I'm in Melbourne.
Loved my dose of caffeine from Dukes today! Amazing coffee- strong yet smooth, great service and affordable too! Totally worth the wait in the queue. Also, the almond croissant here is super yumm! It’s moist and crunchy yet not so flaky! This is now one of my fav place in CBD!
Best cappuccino I had while in Australia and I was happy I was able to buy good coffee to bring back home. The coffee had a nice flavor and was delicious!
Cute little coffee place. Can get very busy in the morning. Coffee is Top notch. Come here if you have the time to queue up else give it a miss.
This place is absolutely busy seeing a steady flow of foot traffic in and out. The treats on display looked great but we just came for a post lunch coffee. My latte was real smooth and creamy, very enjoyable. Keeping this in the back of my mind next time I'm in the area.
A very busy cafe, came here about 8am in the morning and there was a queue ahead.. Small and cozy however given the number of people in the store it was a bit cramped..
Coffees were good, had a croissant and it was average.. Suggest not to worry about the patisserie here..
One of my favourite coffee shop in the city. Not only serving a great and delicate coffee, but also some variants of cakes to go with your cup of coffee. Nice place and good vibes to sit and chill. Do try their Cherry & Lemon cake, that is a perfect combination of sourness and sweetness in a cake. Carrot cake and croissants were pretty good, pretzel is not recommended.
Get ready to queue up if you come around coffee rush hour between 9-10 am weekdays. Usually it slows down in the late morning and afternoon, and for me that’s the best time to visit. I usually order a latte and to me it tasted nice and balanced, the milk temperature is perfect too!
Absolutely one of the best coffees in Melbourne. Really long queue even before the cafe close. I also ordered a lemon cake which is also good.
A bit noisy but still a good place to go.
The coffee is always good here. The service is always friendly and orders are filled quickly even when there's a queue out the door. One of my top choices for coffee and the pastries are pretty good too. A must try!
Last few days in the CBD region and one of the few tasks on my bucket list would be to visit popular coffee hubs. After all, I would get my caffeine fix which lead to better work outcomes? How can this not be a win-win situation. I did note that a cup of coffee in the CBD costs at least 50 cents more compared to coffee spots in the suburbs. A small price to pay for convenience and also to help out with the CBD's crazy rental fees I suppose.
Well the 4 star rating is only for the coffee and the ambience for the place. It’s a busy coffee shop with beautiful coffee and amazing snacks to try. A must visit if you are a coffee lover.
Had a mocha with extra chocolate along with chocolate alfajore. A smug place in the cold for coffee lovers. The aroma of coffee spreads around the corner as you turn along Swanson's street onto Flinder's lane. Even if you are having second thoughts, the fragrance is mesmerising enough for you to be pulled into the shop! Once you are there, the friendly and considerate staff will make sure you don't regret the decision.
Great coffee! Tried this place for the first time last week and I was not disappointed. Cute decor and even though it was busy I got my coffee quite quickly
I joined the mid morning crowds at Dukes this morning which is a narrow coffee destination close by the Melbourne library on Flinders Lane. I was able to secure a table and ate in my resting a latte and a tasty sounding strawberry & pistachio danish to fill the gap after an liquid breakfast hours before. Queuing was quick and coffee delivery also fast. Most importantly the coffee was very good even at regular strength. I had high expectations from Dukes and they definitely delivered. While I enjoyed the flavours of the danish it was unfortunately a little dry so I would choose something else from their range of cakes and nibbles in the future.
☕️ yum
This was marketed to us as one of the best coffee shops in Melbourne and I can see why.
The staff were friendly and the service was very quick.
The coffee itself was very good, definitely within my top 10 cups of coffee that I have had in Melbourne, however a little on the pricier side at $5 for a small cappuccino with soy milk.
The atmosphere within the coffee shop was lovely and relaxed, it’s not very big, but the decor is pretty and you feel very welcomed. I don’t think I would choose this place to have a catch up with a friend, just due to the size, however it’s great for a high quality takeaway coffee or a quick coffee and snack whilst out exploring Melbourne.
I ordered a cappucino and whoa it was good :) so smooth and delicious! I wasnt sure what to order and the staff was so friendly and helped me to decide. Really cosy little place :)
Coffee is so good
Disabled parking nearby
Very busy which shows how good it must be
My son swears by this place
Cakes are great too
Great location
Love this place. Always a great vibe to stop by. Cute interior, delicious coffee, friendly staff. You even get a discount for bringing your Keepcup! The only downside is lines at times that go all the way outside the shop.
Waiting for about five mins to get a coffee. Had it a little bit too late as it’s cold already, good though. Yup I got a flat white takeaway.
We’ll be reminded that you can’t sit at all, even tables are available.

Dukes is selling one of the best coffee at Melbourne. Also take away their cold brew and it just taste so authentic and so different from another store.
Every morning. When you crave a good quality coffee. Dukes Coffee is the place to go. Consistent and attention to detail, executing the top best coffee in Australia.
One of the award winning cafe in Melbourne.
I am Big on my coffee so boy was I glad when I found dukes by surprise. You can’t miss it with the queues out their door in the early mornings. The place is packed but for a very good reason - their coffee - It is fab! Loving the blend, the taste, the strength. It certainly is one of the best in Melbourne. Slightly pricier than other places but not pricy compared to other great coffee establishments, duke knows how to do their coffee.
I also had their almond croissant which was also a highlight.
Overall love their coffee and the vibe of the place. It definitely is a place for all coffee lovers.
Coffee, tea, black, white. Do something, do it right. That's dukes. That's why it's so well regarded. It doesn't mess around outside of doing what it does. And that's top shelf coffee. The only downside is like many artisan coffee roasters is it closes early and on weekends.
Lovely little cafe in Flinders Lane! Service was great and staff were ftiendly! I don't know how to appreciate coffee but it tasted like normal coffee I get near where I work.
One of the best coffee shops in Melbourne ! Had the Lemongrass and Ginger tea and the Kono Filter. The tea was subtle and smooth, and the Kono was one of the best filters I have ever had. Great staff and great atmosphere !
Good environment, feels very metro.
My rating scores are out of a total of 50, 10 for environment, 8 for service, 7 for taste, 8 for quality, 8 for serving size.
Environment 10, very nice and cosy, I can not fault them here at all, very modern.
Service 8, they are nice, but maybe a little bit to chatty to each other.
Taste 7, very good roast, not burnt and double cupped for take away.
Quality 8, good quality, cups are good, beans are a good roast.
Serving size 8, small cup, but was only $4, so standard
Total 41.
One of my fav place during my 1wk visit in Melb. Balanced coffee flavor. Great croissant. Cozy place with minimalist wooden interior (maybe akin to many Japanese cafe decor). Quick staff that spell your name right hahah...
Good coffee. Never too bitter and has a nice creamy texture. Always consistent. Good place for the daily coffee grind. Can get very crowded so be prepared to wait a little for your coffee.
Long black in my personal opinion was too acidic.
The ambiance of you were to drink coffee in house is warm and cosy! Service was fast and efficient as well!
soy flat white. 10/10. premium quality coffee. there's a long queue but worth the wait in my opinion especially if you're a lover of good coffee.
As always coffee is really really really good. There is a reason why they are always busy and Dukes coffee is available at so many coffee spots.
Amazing coffee! Together with Brother Baba Budan, they make up a formidable pair to defend Melbourne's coffee status. Went in 10 mins before it closed, yet the buzz was still there. Must visit!
Had a Kenyan batch brew this morning and had to have another this arvo! These guys are as professional as it gets. Hats off to you. The company must treat their staff very well, the same faces have been smiling across that bar for years.
Friendly service, good atmosphere and the coffee is worth the walk if you are in the city. Very smooth and on the mark every time. If you like a good coffee do yourself a favour and try it.
Very good coffee and the service staff are very friendly and attentive, Venue is small but does the job, the fig cake was ok. Will be back for more coffee
Love love love this place. Hidden treasure in the city. Beautiful coffee and selection of sweet treats to accompany. Ambience is peaceful and calm amongst the busy streets in Melbourne

When I enter Dukes I feel as though I have left Melbourne; the decor transporting me to NY or Seattle (or at least how I would imagine them to be). This place gets very busy in the mornings, with a line extending out the door. This is for good reason, as the coffee is quite good. Despite the weighing of ingredients and so on, I have been met with a couple of coffees that I found to be quite harsh. It was bearable, but unexpected. Nonetheless I would recommend Dukes.
Decent cup of coffee with nice lingering finish. However a little too acidic for my taste personally, although some may find it alright. Maybe will come back to try some white coffee varieties.
The best brew I've ever had in Mel! Crowded in this little space but seems everyone finally found their own moments here by smelling and tasting theirs favourite cups!
Consistently outstanding coffee. Been here a few times and never been disappointed. Always exceeds expectations, my favourite coffee in the cbd.
One of the BEST specialty coffee groups in the game by far!
These guys hit the ball out of the park time and time again with quality coffee & service with a high end European decor and ambience that delivers the perfect coffee experience every time.
Many many others can't much it with the team from Dukes!!!
And do yourself a favour and check out there new site up in Sydney - South by Dukes.
Another home run!
This is a must place to visit what a slick operation. Loved the way they say thank you to the customers who are waiting for their order. The best coffee I have ever had. Go there today 😊
Sometimes, the coffee flavour changes at this cafe but when I had my latte, it was perfect in every way. If I were to choose a place for coffee in the city, this would definitely be on the top of my list.
Love it, a regular stop for me on my way into work.
I love the fit out and it's great to take a minute sitting at the high bench seats.
Coffee has always been consistent and quite fast considering how busy this place is!
Outstanding cafe latte, both with milk or with soy!
Great variety of small bites and pastries are available to accompany coffee.
I particularly love all the croissants here, they have possibly the best pain au chocolat in CBD!
Great coffee, great staff.
Zomato needs at least 140 characters per review apparently so I'm going to waste your time by writing this sentence
Stumbled upon this honest cafe on my way hustling on a weekday, the simplicity is so inviting that I stopped to have a latte. Beautiful and clean space, good coffee with some fine pastries, no gimmicks. Love it. This is what Melbourne is all about!
Coffee is good. I tried their Cappuccino and it feels familiar. Kinda tasted like one of the famous cafe in CBD called m********r p***s. But still its good. I like it.
My favourite place to get a coffee in CBD. Always decent coffee, I never get disappointed. Pastries and biccies on display also look very yummy, I’m often tempted to buy. Had the peanut butter cookie before, so good 🤤
The coffee from Dukes is most excellent and one that brings the corporate crowds in the mornings. There’s a 50c discount for using your own cup which is nifty. The staff are sufficiently perky for that hour of the day and there’s some good coffee aromas coming from the cafe. The food was a bit more on the meh side of things for me, so I’d probably stick to the java for next time.
Consistently good and fairly priced, i normally get the iced filter. Expect queues in the early morning. Most of the pastries and sweets are very nice, but skip the croissants. Great pretzels and the peanut butter and chocolate chip cookie are ace.
I'm extremely lucky that Dukes is just a 10 minutes walk from my sister's apartment. After a freezing and restless midnight flight and wintery Melbourne weather, I was looking forward to a good cup of coffee. So happy to see this sign!. I had an espresso and a magic. It was my first time ordering a magic in Melbourne and I have to say that I wasn't impressed- it wasn't balanced. My ex-colleague makes it heaps better.
I love a great coffee. Coffee is fruity (the first sip) and I love how perfect it is everytime I go there. One of my fav coffee place, however when you bring a baby the access is not that easy, since the place is narrow and long. I somehow manage to go and pick up a great coffee every now and then.
I occasionally meet up with a friend who is a bit of a coffee snob. I only come to dukes because he doesn't complain about the coffee. That is as close as your going to get as the ultimate compliment you will get from him.
Great spot and warranted queues for the elixir of life. Chilled vibes inside and a lovely spot to linger and sip your cuppa.
The feller who usually calls out names for orders is jovial and brightens the day... sometimes people need a little extra kindness and Duke's doesn't go unnoticed or unappreciated. The person taking orders/payment is always friendly and makes eye contact. Good job, you guysers.
super bright floral coffee taste as always, for me Duke coffee roaster is one of the best coffee shop in Melbourne. Beside that, I had the best almond croissant so far in here. More than that, this place has an open coffee bar so it is great for coffee lover to actually observing how your cup of love being made. Barista crew is interesting, they don't have uniform or wearing any specific style of clothes as other coffee shop trying to do to show up the vibe. They make me feel like it is a home of different people grouped by the love for coffee. SIMPLE and GREAT.
I headed to Duke’s Coffee Roasters for my morning pick-me-up, as I’ve read good reviews as well as seen how crowded it is inside most of the time. It was sometime before 11am, the queue moved fast and steadily which was soon rebuilt when more customers came and lined up. I ordered a small latte with one sugar to take away.
Had the pistachio and raspberry cake with a latte. It was delicious and coffee was good. However, I didn't find that the staff was really nice (not saying hi back, after ordering, I got a "next please" without a thank).
Cute cafe within the CBD's little crisscrossing streets and laneways. I've gotten a window seat table on both occasions I've been here (which is lucky I'm told!), it's usually busy but most people are queuing for takeaway. Hot chocolate is great here, not too sweet, and so are the treats! Would highly recommend the carrot cake.
The ultimate coffee connoisseur bar, hard to match
What do they have going .... the CBD Flinders Lane location, the classic building with simple & rich interior, the coffee "extraction" set up, the equipment's, the meticulous attention to detail, the care and attention of their hipster looking staff.
The only thing they don't have is super-licious, addictive patisseries baked on the premise.
Absolutely hard to match, please let me know another place in the CBD.
My go to place for coffee whenever I'm in the city, love love love Dukes!! Convenient location. Also can't go past that amazing cake cabinet!
Loving the coffee beans down at Dukes this morning!
Just a small queue out the door, but we were quickly ordering our coffees and sitting at the bench.
This place has an uncomplicated, unpretentious vibe about it which I really like.
Coffee was nice and smooth and they have Almond Milk which makes me a happy chick.
Loads of choice of how you'd like your coffee with filter or espresso and some Artisan Tea from Chamellia and a great range of donuts, biscuits & various cakes and pastries.
Great place to stop into if you're in the city and need a quick coffee.
Great Melbourne coffee house. Particularly good place to grab a quality filter coffee if that's your thing - they always have a wide variety and always perfectly brewed.
Went here a bit over its opening hours yet the staff still welcomed me and told me to enjoy as much time as I wanted. The espresso blend is one of my favs in melbourne!
用心做咖啡用心经营的店是无敌的
What my friend said was 'they are communicating with coffee beans'.
「BEST FILTER COFFEE IN TOWN!」(i felt like i had to put in capital so people can read)
I started tasting filter coffee from the end of 2015. And base on my experience, Dukes offers the best filter coffee overall in Melbourne. Very distinctive and easily consumed. Although the reading board is bit out of distance from where our orders taken, young girl at the register was friendly and patient enough to explain each one of them to us. Thank you, girl!
Delicious coffee!! Not too weak and not too strong. Milk temp just right 👌 might just become a regular! A lucky find on my hunt for great coffee!!
Solid coffee. Very consistant and very good house roast!
Its on the pricier side for coffee but bring your own KeepCup and you get 50c off.
The line is always long but thats a side effect of amazing coffee. They get through the line really efficiently.
If you want a pastry dont hesitate.
Had an espresso at this fancy coffee roastery. The espresso was luscious, balanced and the staffs were friendly. Will be going back to try their milk-based. Recommended
Man, these guys have it sorted when it comes to smashing out large quantities of coffees quickly. This place generally has a line (why wouldn't it? Great coffee and location) and you'd expect to wait way longer than expected-but before you know it, your coffee order is up!! Such good coffee too!!!! Small venue, so best to get takeaway than to risk not finding a seat.
Dukes is a place that I come back to every time I visit Melbourne. The service is swift and atmosphere is bustling yet pleasant.
The dishes are also delicious especially their crumpets!! Really enjoyed that dish the most!

My favorite coffee place, very consistent interms of quality (yes, they failed me one or two times but I let it go). Great staff, fast service, although wait time can get a bit daunting before 9am, then from 10am till 2pm, but no worries, it is worth the wait. They have some stupendous looking machines, like scale and automatic milk tube (I don't know what they called, pls don't judge).
Highly recommend getting the large one, only for $4.5, much better value in comparison to the regular $4. The coffee often gets better after I drink half of the cup, seriously, this has happened most noticeably with latte and cappa. Try it out yourself. Cheers.

Dukes has awesome coffee. Sometimes a big line out the front but certainly worth the wait. Staff are also really friendly!
Best coffee in Melbourne, simple as that! The service and knowledge of the staff is great, atmosphere is nice if you have time to sit in. They also sell coffee beans and paraphernalia.
We went here for a morning coffee on Australia Day. Had the cappuccino which was quite weak for me in terms of coffee flavour. There were so many sweet treats on the counter including the famous Butterbing. Had the almond crunch which was nice and chewy and perfectly salty sweet which I love.
Dropped into this cool space this morning for a quick coffee. Service was great cakes used are Cobb Lane - Delicious and the coffee on point. Keep up the good work Dukes!
I love this place, every time I come in my coffee does not take more than 5 min.
Its always nice and delicious.
They were closed for renovations a few weeks ago and I missed them so much.
Was in at Dukes this morning after a recommendation from a friend ordered an espresso and a butterbing coffee was fantastic and the staff extremely friendly. Was the perfect way to kick start my Friday.
Stopped in for my afternoon coffee. Ordered double shot flat white. Wanted a bottle of water for takeaway however only sparkling on offer - which wouldn't be a problem but glass bottles are a pain to carry around. Nice coffee but noticing a trend of luke warm coffees in Melbourne- have not had a hot one since. Will have to order extra hot from now on
Not just your typical coffee shop in the Melbourne CBD with high foot-traffic - consistently great coffee, friendly service (no matter how busy they are) and tempting selection of pastries. Can't go past Dukes if you're looking for a quality cup.
awesome coffee ... order a salted caramel doughnut or almond croissant to go with the coffee ... service was efficient and friendly ... the baristas are so professional
It's very small and very busy. Often the queue extends out the door. But the coffee is arguably the best in Melbourne. There is also a selection of pastries which we usually find hard to resist.
Good coffee. Very nice nibbles to tempt. Friendly staff but maybe a bit hard of hearing? Got a simple order of long black with cold milk on the side wrong - twice!
love it, the best coffee in Melbourne! good pastry as well, and lovely baristas. the best spot for coffee to go or just sit dow for few minutes between meetings
Probably one of the best spots for coffee in the city. In fact they specialist in coffee, have a few pastries and not much else but their coffee is good. They self roast and just focus on fusing passion and science into your cup!
Dukes is my favourite place to get a coffee when in the CBD & I can't resist their peanut butter & chocolate chip cookies. There are some other amazing looking cakes and pastries also available but the cookies for me win every time!!!
Found this place last week by "accident" and Im really grateful. I had a really fantastic coffee after looooong time! Definitely the best espresso in Melbourne.
I avoid even trying take away these days (see below) but still enjoy coming here for a lunch break coffee. Staff are almost always very friendly, the interior is stylish yet subtle, they're clearly serious about their coffee, and try haven't jumped on the stupid new bandwagon of charging more for strong (the sooner that rip off ends, the better... I blacklist any cafe that tries it). Gets very busy here but turnover is quick. Recommended.
Sep 2015 (2 stars): Coffee strength has dropped majorly here over the past 2 months or so and ordering a strong latte will get you a regular strength one. Or less. Shame, they used to be good.
There are only a few spots in the place so if you are looking to sit back and enjoy a coffee, get in early or wait for a spot for a bit. I had a bit of time to kill and I walked for a take away but spotted a seat at the bar and ended up seating. Ordered my long black and sat down. Observing the weighing of the coffee shots and the pre-making process was quite nice as it was a bit of a show.
Coffee arrived without an explanation of what I was drinking; a little unprofessional if you ask me especially for an espresso drinker.
The coffee was quite tasty and well-bodied with nice aroma and a little (Colombian - I can only assume) aftertaste. I didn't like the cups it was served in - maybe because I am creature of habit and I love the tulips. Overall ok, nothing special to make you wanna come back. A few milk coffees around me looked nice too with basic latte art.
Used to come here every day for coffee when I was at uni around the corner and years later still coming back, best coffee and breakfast on Chapel St.
Stumbled upon this place during a search for caffeine. It didn't disappoint. It's a very clean and organised vibe inside, even when it's busy. The coffee was superb. No complaints.
Dukes has never disappointed. Excellent coffee walk-up, and the queue out the door tells the story. Friendly staff, and serious about their beans.
Best coffee in Melbourne, by far. Love frequenting cafes that use Dukes coffee, too. Have been spoilt by Dukes now and they've set a very high standard! :)
Walked past this place countless, countless times and finally dropped by for a coffee recently. And it was a good coffee, friendly staff but they were out of croissants :(
Best coffee I have found in Melbourne, beautiful interior and always friendly service (bar once). My next visitor to Melbourne who wants to sample our coffee will be taken here!
Love love their coffee! And sweet treats.... Gets crowded thought in peak hours but baristas are fast and coffees are consistent in quality. Been many times and haven't been disappointed
A Melbourne City Coffee Crawl usually includes Dukes Coffee Roasters on Flinders Lane. A great location near Degraves Street and Centre Place, it captures tourists busy exploring Melbourne’s laneways as well as locals who want coffee. There is almost always an eight-person line before 9am every day and this is testament to its coffee.
When I visited Dukes, I got the Finca La Fany El Salvador - Inverted Aeropress. Before I ordered, I had a good browse at their range of origins and blends for sale and after reading the stories behind each one, decided to order the Finca La Fany. This coffee was complex; it had a plum acidity and syrupy dark chocolate finish.
Some people say Melbourne is renowned for serving the best coffee in Australia so I had high hopes and put a lot of pressure on myself when deciding on a coffee shop. Mid way through shopping on Collins Street on day two I was exhausted but on a mission to get good coffee. We strayed into Flinders Lane (same street as Chin Chin) which is parallel to Collins Street and found Dukes with a line out the door at 3pm. This is usually when most cafes in Brisbane are closing so I was very impressed. It was a small shop but there was still enough room for us to sit down and drink our coffee in store.
Love dukes coffee! Never lets you down.
Awesome espresso from Dukes at Ross House this morning! Great punch to kick start the day. Was a single origin from Rwanda I think. Love Dukes beans!
Famous for its reputation as the nation’s coffee capital, Melbourne is the city to come to for a quality brew. Melbourners are obsessed with coffee. So much so that coffee snobs are likely to turn up their noses at the slightest temperature shift or sub standard coffee art. It’s no wonder that chains like Starbucks couldn’t survive the ferocity of the Melbourne market.
Was attracted by the simplicity of their logo when passing by. The coffee smell followed afterwards. With the crowded atmosphere, we went in.
Luckily, there were couple of empty seats deeper inside the cafe. The coffee to be honest wasn't the best, not strong enough but it was good. They had vast selection of different pastries, cookies and cakes which looked divine!!
Coffee is good, not great - come here mostly for the convenient location (on my way to the train station) and they always get the temp of my flat white just right (can't stand warm coffee but also scalding hot coffee is not very nice). I can think of places in the CBD area that are just as good, if not better, but like I said, the convenient location is a big win in my books and the coffee generally gets the job done. I've never actually had a sit-down meal or coffee here before though - it's always very crowded whenever I'm in (early mornings, lunchtime) and there doesn't actually seem to be much space to sit down from what I've seen.
Morning delight. Gotta say a huge thank you to Bree who makes my morning commute so pleasant. Even with a line out of the door most mornings I'm always greeted with a great big smiley hello. It's the little details she remembers about myself that make my morning coffee a personal experience. What a charmer !
Long lines. Great coffee. This space was worth every penny in design costs. It is wonderful!
No food. Coffee and cakes galore!
My black coffee is always pretty delicious!
Consistently awesome coffee. I always love coming to see you guys when i visit Melbourne! The coffee is always at a consistently high standard and the service is always with a smile!
A asked me today where my favourite coffee places were. It really got me thinking. Hmm, I can think of a couple of places, but where are my top places? I guess at times this would depend on what type of atmosphere you are looking for when drinking your coffee, as well. Are you alone (and I know A hates going to places alone)? Are you after a quiet place to study? Did you want to stay longer, shorter, a hip place, a clean place, a cosy place... Dukes is a small place, and can be described as a coffee bar. There are not many seatings available and lines form out the door during peak times. If you are alone - and I don't mind at all - you may get lucky enough to find a stool quickly enough. I ordered a long macchiato and enjoyed its smoothness with a touch of foam on top. I would come again for a caffeine dash, it's an ideal place to get a takeaway. Coffee with a smile. Great coffee and very energetic team, I always leave feeling a little happier...
Brilliant coffee. Enough said.
I do love the coffee here! Skinny flat white pretty please. I wish the place is bigger so you can actually sit and people watch while enjoying your delicious coffee.
Incredible. One of the best coffees I've had. I had a flat white and it had a beautiful bold flavour without any bitterness. It was creamy and just the right temperature to allow for maximum flavour to come through.
Aprilgoforgood food. Really amazing REALLY!!!!!!!!!!!! highly recommend. ;D especially for the sweet bacon--HEAVEN!!!

One of the best coffee. Had a takeaway latte, definitely one of the best coffee in town. Nice modern design & perfect lighting. Good job guys!
Walking around Melbourne in search for coffee, I decided to pop into this shop after seeing a group come out with coffee in hand.
The cafe is long and narrow with some tables/seating inside and a delicious display of cakes/pastries when ordering. But I was here for coffee and this did not disappoint as my large latte ($4.50) was really smooth and this satisfied my morning search.
Heart shaped box. In my first encounter I hurriedly entered Dukes to run away from the the torrential rain. I was mesmerised by the womb like comfort and warmth of this place. Everything and everyone here is incredibly good looking. The gentlemen serving the coffee, the tiny baked goodies neatly ordered in the glass counter, and even the patrons. I paid $4 for a long black that was somehow weak with a faint hint of paper in the taste. It felt more like a short black with another spoonful of tap water in it. I then sat in one of the high chairs, and the cute boy next to me started up a conversation. I don't like the coffee but I keep going back because it's a happy place. Maybe it's just the illusion of the wooden interior and the dim lights.
Certainly one of the best coffee places in town. Good job guys!
Great Coffee. One of the best coffee places in the CBD - great interior, friendly staff and some really good coffee.
Serious about coffee!. I love this café! The thing that first compelled me to walk in was the unique interior. The shop is just so so beautiful. The coffee is just perfect! You can tell these people are serious about their coffee and it shows in the quality of what they serve. To accompany the perfect brew, try one of their tasty pastries. I had the fig and pistachio tart and the white choc covered shortbread with caramel and both were so indulgent!
If you're a serious coffee lover, go to Dukes!
Fave Local. One of my favourite places to go in Prahran. Always busy, great coffee, service, food
Coffee and friendly. We have been there three times this week and each time we have had good coffee made well by a "barista". Good vibe, smallish, busy and may have to wait for a chair/s, but worth the wait. On 2nd visit asked for my coffee to be a bit stronger, and it was perfect. The little somethings to order on the side are nice also.
We will be going back again :)
Good, but not transcendent. After reading the rapt reviews of Duke's Coffee Roasters, I had to try it. I'm a coffee aficionado and I'm staying around the corner from there, so it was a natural. Duke's flat white didn't transport me to some higher coffee dimension, though. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bagging this place. The flat white was mellow, with a full, rich, rounded flavour. (It's also the smallest flat white I've had in Melbourne, maybe 6 ounces of liquid.) I just prefer robust coffee that smacks me in the jaw with crema intensity. Duke's is smooth. So is the decor in the place -- low lighting, mod fittings, chill music on the sound system. The kit-out is opposite to the activity level in Duke's, which was massively busy when I stopped in at 8:30 a.m. on a midweek day. The four baristos behind the counter and the maitre d' up front were going flat-out like engine pistons at 160 kph -- looked like a great team.
P.S. -- nice selection of pastries at Duke's, too. I'll remember them more fondly than the tiny coffee.
Subtle, perfect. Settled in for a coffee before work on a Thursday morning...Staff were friendly and attentive and let me look at their gorgeous ceramic jugs and chat about the various apparatus while waiting for my coffee to arrive.
The fit out is understated and the energy inside seems subtle until you step back out onto Flinders Lane and launch back into the world. It's then that I realised how gently cocooned inside I was.
Coffee was made to my liking, and wasn't smack in the face with strength. I felt the caffeine gently roll through me in the process of drinking.
Loved it and will be back.
Coffee anyone?. Their coffee never fail me! But rather expensive compared to other coffee shops $4.... Perhaps pricing equates to skill and consistency.... Still, $4 well-spent
Perfect coffee every time. These highly knowledgeable baristas never get the coffee wrong, it is simply amazing - a perfect balance of milk and coffee, chocolatey smooth and at the right temperature. Service is friendly and welcoming. Atmosphere is relaxed and a great getaway from the busy office. Love to come here to read and sip on my coffee. Even had a great conversation with one of the staff about the book I was reading!
Amazing coffee and super friendly staff. Love it!
The coffee here is fantastic - one of the best in Melbourne.
Great coffee presented w baristas w the highest of knowledge. Wide range of pastries to sweetened your tooth too.
Wish u guys open on weekends too soon!
Great place. After trying 5 or so cafes in the city Dukes was the last one i got to.
Got to sit in the window and ordered a flat white from the very attentive young girl.
Was a lovely end to the day. Oh yeah and the coffee was delightful.
Coffee perfection done right. We are so spoilt in Melbourne with the quality of cafes opening up in every nook and cranny.
I usually have an open mind when walking into any cafe without the height of expectations followed by possible disappointment, but Dukes is by far the most consistent in coffee extraction. This is the only place that I have my espresso and double ristrettos (the latter last week forced me to open an urbanspoon account).
One of the top modern cafes with beautiful fit outs in Melbourne. A MUST!!!
Perfect cafe style atmosphere, friendly staff, superb coffee to die for and not to mention the high quality food which is presented beautifully. Had a great experience here and would recommend it to anyone!
Lovely attentive service, nice atmosphere, and lovely shop fit out with tiled floors and light wood.
Sophisticated. This is a very inviting inner city cafe that has a great look. The blonde timber is a feature as are the impressive coffee machines that dominate the bench top. The space is small but accommodates those in need of a caffeine fix very well. Some small tables and stools at the bench work well. The lighting also provides a good vibe.
No secret that the coffee here is the major focus and their menu is extensive. The cappuccino I had was rock solid.
Glad I took the time out to get along.
AMAZING coffee!! My husband and I are on holidays and were hoping to find a good coffee as we are both retry picky. We stumbled across this beautiful place and it didn't disappoint! Will def be coming here everyday while we are here :)
Beautiful coffee, worth the short walk from Flinders St Station
I went there this morning for the first time, it was amazing. Great coffee, the cafe look really good, friendly staff. I'll be back for sure whenever I am in the city.
Lovely coffee and vibe, the tables by the window are tiny though - anyone over 6ft beware!
Great Coffee. Awesome coffee!!
This is where I get my daily dose of coffe while studying at the city lib!
Spectacular. Don't bother with anyone else.

Hooray, You're Here!. ...Good job - gonna add more chairs?? :D
(Update)
Still rely and trust my cuppa would be done well here. Magic is pretty good.
Excellent coffee, being someone who roasts coffee, I'm a appreciator of a good cup.
Gr8 staff as well.
I love this place. Extremely friendly staff combined with a cozy, comfortable setting, they churn out amazing coffees each time, every time. Their whites are consistently smooth with mild caramelly tones. They also serve an array of pastries – which regrettably I have yet to sample.

Dukes roast their own coffee, buying from individual farms or small cooperatives. Their roastery is based in Collingwood, with beans available in either espresso or filter roasts.
Dukes Coffee Roasters have now set up shop in the city, exclusively doing drink orders with pastries available. They have limited seating so orders are predominantly catered for take away drinks. Magic ($4) I can always rely on Dukes to deliver the goods, coffee-wise and it's located right in the middle of the CBD so now it's even easier. Drinks: 9/10 Service: 8/10 Value: 8/10 Will I return? Yes, great coffee as expected. Dukes Coffee Roasters 247 Flinders Lane Melbourne VIC 3000 (03) 9123 4567 Mon to Fri 6:30am - 4:30pm Great news for city workers and dwellers!! Huxtaburger II has recently opened in the heart of the CBD offering the same menu as their Collingwood outpost with more sleek and spacious seating for 14 people. In the first week of opening, waiting for the peak hour lunch rush to subside, I hopped over for a quick beef burger fix and opted for the original Huxtaburger - filled with a beef pattie, mustard, mayo, tomato sauce, tomato, cheese, lettuce, pickles in between a
Take a tour of a coffee shop with a local roaster at the top level of Melbourne, Dukes has amazing coffee. It is one of the coffee shops that are always crowded with customers. But the service is quite fast. Highly recommend
Easily one of the best coffees in the city. Great pastries as well. Used to get really crowded, particularly with tourists but not so much in the current environment. Also very friendly and efficient staff.
Can’t believe I’ve been walking past this place for years and never tried it. It was busy with the pre-9am office crowd but with lots of workers and a couple of machines the wait wasn’t too long.
The taste of my soy magic (Bonsoy) was exactly what I wanted. The extraction was perfect and milk texture and temperature great. I’ve been looking for this taste since Cup of Truth around the corner closed down.
It might be my new regular on the walk from the train station to the office.
Fresh CBD cafe with good coffee, nice decor, and an abundance of tasty treats. The carrot cake is divine and perfect to share between two 🥕
I like their coffee whenever I visit Melbourne, I come here to enjoy having their house blended coffee.
I recommend their long black, you can taste their bean flavor more.
Dukes at Ross House has been providing Melbourne with the finest coffee since 2013. Their focus is the craft of carefully roasting the best organic coffees in the world. I had the pleasure to taste two different, organic coffees: a magic made of their house blend with a sweeeeeeet pistachio cake, followed by a refreshing cold brew on ice.
Luckily, they had El Salvador Santa Elena – Natural (Organic) on today fort my cold brew. Finca Santa Elena is located in Palo de Campana, Santa Ana and is regarded as one of best organic farms in the country. In fact, Fernando Lima’s coffees have placed in each of the last 18 COE awards, dating back to the origin of the competition in El Salvador.
The staff was very friendly, and I liked the minimalistic, yet high quality interior design. There were many different textures to touch and the leather on top of the bench was super comfortable to sit on. I especially liked the handwritten logo on the front façade and the wooden menu board in the back of the café.
Strong coffee taste but is was beautiful. Great service and lovely stuff. If coffee not to hot would be perfect.
