Review Ruyi Modern Chinese - Melbourne

Smita Raghavan Shetty
RuYi oozes character. We were served by Mercy and Sedrick and they were fabulous in the attention they gave us, the narrative and culture connections they presented. This was an absolutely beautiful experience. The food was great. Minimalist decor. I liked the earthy stone serving platters that added to the presentation and beauty of the dishes.. it’s quaint presence goes along with the subtle tastes it offers. However, it deserves more attention. We were here for the second time and will come again

This place is insane. The food is next level good. We got the 5 course tasting menu and the food was so good that we were almost about to ask if we could get the 9 instead. But once we got to our last item we were so full. We even came back the next day to get takeaway chicken wings. The atmosphere is so calm and all the workers there are so nice. It has an authentic feel to it and would defiantly come here again next time i visit Melbourne. I would give this place 6/5 stars if I could.

Delicious! We had a set menu (mothers day special) and everything was thoughtfully set out. Very full by the end and very pleased. Oh and the staff were so lovely!

The sauce for Kingfish ceviche was too sweet, I order it all the times at different restaurants, this is absolutely the worst one. Wonton was ok, they poured too much vinegar in the plate. Jasmine cocktail tastes like Gin mixed with 2022 Melbourne tap water, very impressive. We also ordered Old Fashion tastes like vermouth without Bourbon … By the way, don’t ask customers how about the food when they are ready for paying the bill, it too late to ask, of course we would say “good”, if everything is good you don’t even need to ask, we can’t wait to let you know how much we enjoyed the food. Overall very disappointing!!

We work in hospitality and a friend of mine said we have to try RuYi for its high standards in hospitality. Finally made it last week and everything seemed very top notch even to our picky industry eyes. Their wine list is great and reasonably priced with a lot of carefully selected boutique wines. The 5 spice old fashioned blows our mind away. Food is amazing and goes along well with the beverages and nicely presented. You can see that the service team is very professional, young and energetic. They have a good knowledge about the menu and looked after us all along the way in great detail. A very well run venue. We can see the hard work behind the scenes from what was presented to us

Brilliant restaurant for dietary restrictions. My partner needs to avoid wheat, onion and garlic. We opted for the 5 course set menu "chef's choice". Each course was delicious! It was so lovely to eat somewhere and feel comfortable knowing they understood our food restrictions. Desert was also delicious. Wonderful and attentive service. Picture of bao (not GF) that I ate, partner was served GF alternative.

Randomly walked in and wasn't disappointed. Tasty food, Attentive staff and Nice atmosphere. The tofu was very tasty.

Great service and food. Staff were very friendly. Food portions were very good. I recommend the 5 course banquet.

Came here for dinner on Monday night. Great place with great wine. Love the eggplant fries, woton, and tangy wagyu, they were cooked to perfection. The wagyu melt in your month, which was highly recommended to try. It would be better if dishes could be served faster.

A lovely dining experience overall. I booked through RuYi official website and received an instant confirmation. I requested a good seating area for 6 people as it was our first time there and they had reserved a very cozy seating area for us. The food was fantastic. Loved the ambiance and stunning interior decor. Background music was a very enjoyable experience. Good choice of music overall. The service was quick and efficient. While I waited for my friends to arrive (yes, I was an early bird) I noticed the staff being attentive and keeping an eye on all diners. I found that attentiveness very refreshing. They also had an impressive collection of wines and a well-stocked bar. Overall, a very intimate and an ambient place to catch up with friends and family over lovely authentic Chinese dishes and drinks.

Love this restaurant. The kitchen and wait staff were so professional and nice. Service was attentive and a nice atmosphere. I've been here many times and am never disappointed. There's the lunch menu with lots of options. I tried wagyu beef, Xiao Long Bao and flaming prawn last night and it was delicious! Very generous amount of food size, which I appreciated. Super restaurant!

We were here on a short holiday and stumbled across RuYi restaurant and were blown away by the wonderful friendly service. Sharing the family history, then helping us to decide on our meals. Amazing food! Tofu like I have never had before superb! Thank you highly recommend.

What I love most about RuYi is being able to place your trust in the staff so you can concentrate on having a great time with friends. They actually look after you all the time. Recently, I had lunch with a work colleague again. We were in a rush, we asked our waitress to choose some lower-fat, gluten-friendly options for us. The lunch set is express, healthy, value. Overall, friendly staff and reasonable price.

Good service, nice people and delicious food! Especially, fried chicken wings, eggplant fries, Shao Long Bao and wagyu beef. Every fan of Chinese cuisine should go there and have a try.

The food was delicious except the soup (very bitter flavor and not nice for some reason). The Caramelized ribs are to die for and although there was a long wait for the food it was worth waiting for in the end. The service is way to slow. They should also end the rule they have of no serving a main until all of the entrees on the table are finished. My friends had 2 and 3 entrees instead of a main and I ordered a main and had to wait for well over an hour until they had finished theirs. Hence I was the only one eating on my own....very unsatisfactory indeed! Don't go if your starving hungry on entry.

Had a date night here with hubby and couldn't have been more satisfied with the food, drinks, service and overall environment of the restaurant. It was a busy Friday night, there were some special cocktails and they were delish. We ordered wagyu beef, chicken wings, hand- made tofu, barramundi fillet and the Wonton in chill sauce. All of them tasted so good. Our waitress was super lovely as well. Very prompt, polite and friendly. The restaurant is very relaxing, decor is pleasant and accompanied by cool music.

Absolutely beautiful food/staff/experience. 100% recommend

A great dinner here, good atmosphere, prompt and gutsy service finished up with great food and wine. The service here was the stand-out. Food was delicious. We tried some dishes by the staff suggestions, we had hand-made tofu, chicken wings, eggplants, flaming prawn, pecking duck bao bao, all dishes are delicious.

I was a solo traveller looking for a good quality meal. RuYi was recommended by a friend. It is a very elegant and comfortable restaurant. the staff were friendly. I had the flaming prawn myself, it was amazing. 2nd favorite was the Peking duck bao. There are some sauce I have never tried before, it is such a special place in Melbourne. By the way, the location is very central and close to the Parliament House.

Seriously the best dining experience I have had for a long time. Thanks guys.

Usually go to RuYi for dinner. Yesterday, my colleagues recommended me to try new lunch menu there, which was the best lunch experience I have ever had. Great environment with delicious lunch set, plus the serving speed was fast. Can't be more perfect!

One of the best modern Chinese restaurant which I've tried. Food there was value and very delicious. Especially Bao Bao, Numbing beaf, steamed baramundiIt. It also had comfy ambiance and great service.

Table for four was cozy but the excellent table service kept our table cleared. Staff were friendly and attentive. Good selection of Cocktails and wines. we tried several entrees but our favourite was the hand-made Tofu. Did not have to wait long for anything and were even asked when they should start the main meals after our huge entree. Most impressed. I will definitely come back again.

To celebrate our anniversary I chose RuYi in Liverpool St - everything was fantastic. The Waygu, Wonton were extremely tasty, the wine matched perfectly with the dish. The most delicious food and great location - close to CBD district. Great service - will definitely be going back

First time at Ruyi was very very good for me and my girlfriend! Starting with the good location. Its at the top end of CBD, close to our Collin street office, only few minutes walking distance.

On arrival, we didn't know what to choose among so many options on the menu, so we were suggested by our table host to go with the 5 course "as you wish" set menu, which would serve us their best original dishes arrenged by the chef.. Ok! Sincerely, I think this was the best decision. All of them so unique in flavour. The handmade artisian tofu, the peking duck Bao Bao, Wonton Dumplings (I adore spice food). No words were to describe the caramelized chicken wings that we ordered a second serve before the main arrived.

For the main, we had the Kong Bao Chicken. The mild spiciness highlighted the flavour to perfect. Everything was very well balanced.

Tip: ask them about the Argentina Malbec. In my opion, a perfect match!

Keep doing this good service guys!

I'm not that kind of person who likes to try different places all the time because a bad experience tends to spoil my night, for that reason usually me and my friends always go to the same places, but last week we decided to try something new, Ruyi came up in our reserch and after all the positive reviews, why not?

With so many options on the menu, we wanted to try everythig, with the help from our lovely table host, we decided for the 5 course option. I just asked, if possible, the dishes not come too spice for me and also my friend is vegan. She arranged everything for us. When the food came out, it proofed was a right decion to leave everything to the chef. Every single dish was a surprice and all of them look like a piece of art, beautiful plated with delicious flavour. I think everybody should try their Bao Bao at least once in life. Really! I was amazed by all the dishes!

I also really appreciated the warm service, the very accommodating place and the drinks I had, the fresh lychee spritzer and the the very unusual and flavoured Ginger Ginger.

What a night! Me and my friends couldn't be more satisfied! We'll be back soon!

As being my favourite Restaurant, I try to go to Ruyi at least once a month. I've been to China twice and I have never tryed a Shao Long Bao so tasty and freshy as in there.

The place, the food, the wine selection, the service, I like all. The staffs always helpful and attentive. A perfect place to go to relax, chat with friends and family.

I have been t here in diferent occasions, with my friends, collegues, family... they all became Ruyi lover, and have their favourisism. My Mom always dying for the WA Steamed Barramundi. She's a fan of the special sauce. Couple of my friends love their ceviche. To be honest, you can pick anything from the menu, because nothing will go wrong.

I have recently suggested them to have half bottle wines on their list. Hopefully to see that soon.

Ruyi is nearby of my work place and I go very often for dinner with my partner after work, as we like the elegant set up, dim light and, of course, the delicous food.

Last week was the first time we have tried lunch there . Without any surprise it was as good as dinner. In the day time the space becomes airy and bright. We had a sesonal lunch set. All my favourites dishes in there: Bao Bao, caramelized chicken wings and Caramelized Pork Ribs. A glass of Barossa Valley Shiraz was the perfect match to our food. We couldn't believe it only cost $35 for all of this.

We realized that lunch service is faster than dinner. Think they have put offices people's time limition in mind, but the warmth and the thoughtfulness as good as dinner time.

Ruyi now became my favourite place for lunch and dinner. Hey, guys! Don't be surprised if you always see me there!

RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL manager/owner (Asian lady in charge). A waiter made an honest mistake, which led a customer to make an honest mistake, and all this woman cared about was placing blame and humiliating the both of them (at a table of 15 ppl)… just so she could save on a plate of chicken. I do not condone this behaviour in a workplace, and recommend that you avoid Ruyi if you feel the same way.
My review is not the first complaint about the manager’s horrible behaviour (scroll on Google and Zomato to see more).

The waiter made an honest mistake where he placed a chicken dish in between the 2 of us and didn't make it clear who it was for. We were both expecting a chicken dish and my colleague mistook it for hers and ate it first while I waited for mine. After raising this, the manager scolded the waiter in front of everyone asking if he did indeed put the dish in between us instead of in front of the person. My colleague tried to defend the waiter saying it was probably because we were still eating our entrees. The manager then jumped at this opportunity and said to my colleague in these exact words “OH, SO YOU FORGOT WHAT YOU ORDERED AND ATE YOUR FRIEND’S CHICKEN?”. Oh. My. God. Who speaks to customers this way?! She then goes on to point out “clearly this one is the Crispy Chicken and this is the Chicken Wings” and that it was our fault. I had to tell her first-time customers cannot be expected to immediately know what the dishes look like, especially with names like that, and when the waiter isn’t clear about who the dish is for.

In the end, she was unapologetic. She obviously thinks she has the right to speak to customers and staff this way (when no harm was meant by anyone), and I am not surprised to see other 1 star reviews from people observing how badly she treats the waiters.
Go at your own risk, and be prepared for blaming and shaming should a human mistake be made by anyone! Also, the dishes are hit and miss, not worth the price, and the lamps are stupidly low where waiters and customers are constantly bumping their heads.

My family and I had dinner at Ruyi on Saturday/Chinese New Year. It was our first time at the restaurant and we all loved it! We ordered a special New Year set menu (there were 2 to choose from) The food was absolutely delicious, it was very fresh and modern. The sauces/broths/dressings were much lighter and fresher than the usual chinese food. We were impressed with every dish we had ( 7 courses ). We also tried a few of their cocktails and loved all of them as well. Everyone of the members of staff were lovely and very attentive.
We'll be going back and I highly recommend it to everyone.

I like the environment and the special style that combined Chinese and western together. The Wunton is realllllly nice haha hahahaha. Also good for drink

Fantastic, impeccable food with a modern twist on traditional Chinese food. Service was great and staff were very friendly. Restaurant itself has nice, quiet and comfortable ambience and is a great place for friends, colleagues or family to dine and chat. I would definitely recommend!

The restaurant was a tad quiet but don't be fool, the ambience is relaxing, the decor very nice and the food delicious. Only ordered a handful of the small plates and was very satisfied. Clean and delicious Chinese food!

Some friends and I went to Ruyi for dinner and I have to say it hit a 5/5 in all aspects.

The ambiance was fantastic. Dim lights and modern furniture gave a feeling of relaxation and comfort.
The staff were just perfect, too. They thoroughly knew the menu inside out and had a perfect way of explaining everything. They were very attentive, formal when they had to, and casual when the situation suited it. Just right.

The food was incredible! We had a bit of everything, starting with their homemade tofu. I didn't know I could like tofu so much hah!
The chicken wings were perfectly seasoned, and the homemade wonton melted in your mouth, with just the right amount of seasoning.
The stars of the night, though, were the Bao Bao (a bao bun with some of the most tender pecking duck I've ever had), and the Caramelised pork spare ribs, with meat so tender that you could pull it straight off a clean bone with barely any effort.

We wrapped it all up with the Creme Brûlée Shanghai Style. Perfectly sweet, with a delicious caramel layer on top and the only texture a Creme Brûlée should be.

As if this wasn't enough, the music also had a special place. Music is often underrated, but the impact it has subconsciously in the atmosphere is huge. Expect D'Angelo and the likes; relaxed but complex. 10/10 to whoever picked the tunes!

Overall a fantastic evening. Thanks to the beautiful team at Ruyi for such a great night!

I ate here on Tuesday this week. Have been a long time fan of Ruyi and this visit did not disappoint. The best modern chinese in the city - fresh and full of flavour with suprising but welcome twists! Beautiful wines to match and exceptional services. Will be back soon!!

We had fabulous service and excellent food and the decor was hip asian modern.
Located in Liverpool st opposite a few very busy funky restaurants- I wanted that vibe across the street that’s when I got my restaurant envy.

Came here for pre-Christmas celebrations and seeing how the folks will take to the modern Chinese dining experience. RuYi wasn't too particular busy for a Saturday night, Liverpool Street usually sees a hive of activity especially in quality modern Asian dining options. The set menu at $79 per head is rather steep compared to other notable eateries of its kind, I'll touch onto that later. The interior is modern and they spared no expense on the ceramic cups, plates and bowls.

To start off I got a lemongrass and chilli margarita. Very delicious, zippy, sweet and a touch of heat with the salt rim to round it all off.

First dish to arrive was the fried tofu with Sichuan mayo, no spice here. The tofu was very light with a touch of sweetness, pleasant on the tastebuds. It was garnished with shredded nori and spring onions.

The flaming king prawns were a showstopper, resting on a bed of salt we were instructed to let the flames lick the prawns for around 30 seconds. You get a nice salt crusting on the exterior as well as peppers and onions resting on the flesh. Prawn brains, very tasty and I was waiting for someone to offer me theirs but alas I got none.

Next up was their bao bao, essentially peking duck in a bao. Although some people enjoyed it I thought it was just okay, not the fluffiest nor lightest bao out there and the duck was scant, too lean and wasn't succulent. The melody of flavours were predictable.

Their numbing beef I aliken it to the Vietnamese shaking beef, despite the name there was no numbing element (I'm guessing Sichuan numbing). The beef was really tender, paired with some chilli and lime it had explosive flavour, so much so we had to request for our rice earlier as it became quite salty.

Continuing was their fried chicken wings in a honey wasabi sauce. Addictive but yet again an assault on the senses and needs to be balanced with some steamed rice. The chicken was juicy and I loved all the little fried bits (shallots I think) which took on the sauce.

The steamed barramundi fillets were okay, I've had similar prepared at Chinese restaurants countless times and I found this not as delicate. The flavours were familiar but at the same time didn't strike the same cords and I felt it could have used more soy sauce. The enoki mushrooms and asparagus were sparse and did feel out of place with the quantity given.

Up next were the caramelised pork spare ribs, tender ribs which fell off the bone. It was quite salty so you had to pair it with the raw bean sprouts on the side or with rice. I did struggle to finish this, not because I was too full but because I was fatigued from the flavours.

Lastly was a trio of desserts to share. The creme brulee is a safe favourite, creamy custard with a sweet candy which snapped under my spoon. The apple crumble wasn't too bad, I enjoyed the crumble along with the small pieces of apple, our shared version did not have ice cream which would have been nice to bind everything together. The ricotta balls made on the day didn't particularly tickle me and I found them to be a bit doughy in flavour. Uninspiring dessert tasting platter.

So overall I felt that the 8-course set menu was a bit unstructured. It started off well but when we reached the numbing beef, that's where it got derailed. A few of the dishes were overly salty and required rice to counterbalance the intense flavours, they were in this instance served as a starter dish to be fully reliant on its own. I understand this is a modern restaurant but they could take in the concept of sharing (family style). A new dish only came out after one of the dishes were finished, what I'd like to see is multiple dishes arrive at the same time so the diner can mix and match the dishes with rice. Thirdly, the lack of vegetables. The meal was pretty much protein and rice, a balance needs to be struck.

The set menu at $79 per person was dear, especially compared to other modern Asian eateries in Melbourne and their offerings. There were no real premium ingredients used (unless you count the king prawn or the Black Angus eye fillet) and one could only imagine the feast they'd have at another restaurant, classic Chinese or modern Asian.

Despite the negatives you might fare better with an a la carte menu, that way you can customise the menu to your liking. We enjoyed a lot of our starters and the pot stickers looked irresistible. Staff were spot on with their service.

Service was very good, food was great! The dessert was underwhelming. We ordered the apple crumble - needs more ice cream or less crumble. The balance wasn't there. The ambience was cosy and i loved the interior. Highly recommend the caramelised pork main & chicken wings :) ... you're welcome!

Found this gem down a wee laneway in Melbourne when searching for a good Asian restaurant with our 5 year old. The waiting staff were SO attentive giving our child Apple juice that wasn't even on the menu, allowing us to move to a better table when one came free and generally just attending to our needs really well. The food exceeded our expectations. We went for all tapas and could not find fault... Highly recommend it.

My daughter and I noticed this lovely restaurant while waiting to be seated at a popular restaurant in the same area. Though it was in darkness, shortly before opening, we were warmly greeted and shown to a table. The service was attentive and helpful when we mentioned we were going to the ballet. Delightful glass of rose and a selection of small plates of delicious food. Do try the Numbing Beef!
AaronN
The beef dish here was a highlight, really amazing, duck baos were ok, everything else was pretty average. Nice and really attentive staff though.

The food here is superb. Each dish was absolutely delicious and unlike anything we had eaten before.
The service was warm, although there was a mistake made with our mains, which left us waiting an hour+.
They offered a generous compensation for the mishap and were very apologetic. Would return in a heart beat.

Ruyi has a pleasant semi-Scandi decor and a wide variety of fresh and exciting modern Chinese menu options. When presented with the menus we were also provided with a brief history of the family behind Ruyi which added a nice personal touch. We stuck to ordering from the extensive list of entree options and each dish came out quickly, was well presented and packed full of flavour! Highlights were the handmade wontons in chilli sauce - the sauce was so amazing that we kept it to dip into later. The tingling prawns were popping with flavour (according to my friends who had this) and the fried tofu with szechuan mayo was definitely more than just your average tofu dish! The cocktail list was also fresh and exciting. The lemongrass and chilli margarita was the highlight of the cocktails - well presented with a glowing red chilli perched on the rim, and the ginger ginger cocktail was also very refreshing. Excellent place to dine!

It is a beautiful interior and very friendly service, however just lacked a bit of execution from both the kitchen and front of house.
Wines were delicious, but our cocktails had very little booze to speak of and were far too sweet. Agree with a previous review that there was no balance to the meals. We had a set menu, the tofu for 1st round was divine! After this though, 4 of the courses were sticky sweet style finger-food meats, with a 5th being dumplings sitting in a bowl of heavy vinegar and sweetness. Cried out for something to break it, so we ordered some additional chicken karage which was heavenly. The final fish dish served in broth was delicious and a welcome relief, but still very sweet, more than savoury. The only real issue we had was one of our diners has a coriander allergy and they still served two dishes to her with coriander. She only found out after biting into the dish, really not good enough. You could see bits of coriander had been picked off the chicken wings, so the kitchen has mixed it in but realised after and not taken her allergy seriously in choosing to still serve it up. Finally, they also said they weren't doing coffee that day which was disappointing. We ended up spending $100 a head, for that price, more attention to detail is required.
MELB JOURNAL
Really loved this place. The staff are very friendly and attentive. They were able to talk us through the menu and make recommendations. I have been here twice, one enjoying the express lunch and another with friends over dinner. The express lunch is great if you are in the area, offering a substantial and delicious lunch. It’s chefs choice so you don’t have to waste any time thinking - you can sit down and enjoy! For dinner we enjoyed a number of cocktails. We ordered a number of small entrees (around 6 to 8)and a couple of mains to share with sides. To be honest, not all our food came out but it worked out in a favour as we over ordered. The restaurant has a lovely vibe on weekends, so we didn’t bring it to our waiters attention. Highly recommend this place for a reasonable price point and delicious food.

Food was delicious with a myriad of flavours. The peking duck baos and numbing beef were my fav. Service was prompt and friendly, although cocktails and wines took a while to be delivered.

Will be back again :)

Really good modern Chinese (best value of the current crop of modern Asian restaurants). I had a selection of five dishes which ranged from awesome (mind numbing eye fillet beef - tender, spicy and delicious flavour) and fried tofu to very good (pork wontons in chilli oil), sticky eggplant fries and crispy chicken with honey sauce to good (spicy green beans). Highly recommended.

Love Ruyi, come back here quite often!
The bao bao and Peking duck rolls are amazing as well as the homemade wontons 😍 eggplant chips are also to die for!

The food in Ruyi waz okay but not too fantastic either. We did the banquet version, there were pretty good portions there. However, majority of this dishes were either too sweet or salty - there's no balance in flavour in the food they serve.
Jimlinemik
We had dinner at RuYi last night with group of friends, all of us were impressed by the tasty food, gracious service and warm atmosphere.
The cocktails are so delicious, my favourite are chilli margarita and five spice old fashion. we ordered 8 course set menu, each dish cooked with delicacy, full of flavour and nice plating, the hand made tofu, duck Bao and numbing beef are stand outs, especially the Bao, definitely the best in town.

Our first bottle of wine was Riesling. on the list was bannockburn, but due to the vintage change, they don't have it at the moment, our host was fantastic, explained with patience and offered us Ashton Hill riesling which was an absolute bargain for the quality. I like the venue can deal with any situation with professionalism. We were so happy with the bottle, so we trusted and asked our host to pick up the second bottle for us, this time we had Barossa Vally shiraz to go with our beef dish, perfect!

I cant speak any high about RuYi, we will be back for sure! We also will recommend this hidden gem to all of our friends.

Overpriced and extremely disorganised. I will not be returning to this restaurant.

I made a booking for my family of 5. The furniture and ambience was beautiful so we had high expectations.

We ordered the tingling prawns and eggplant chips for entree and the kong bao chicken, steamed barramundi, black angus beef, fried rice, mixed veg and fried broccoli main.

Service was terrible. We had to get the waiter's attention to order despite them always hovering to fill our water glasses! Once we ordered, we waited an hour for the entrees. The portions were tiny and we were starving. The prawns were literally a mouth full each and we were charged an additional $4 for an extra prawn. We got about 2 eggplant chips per person. After another hour passed, our broccoli came out on its own. The photo below is the small portion we paid $9 for. The rest of the food came out sporadically with an approximate wait time of 20 minutes in between dishes. The kong bo chicken had only a few chunks of chicken and a lot of lettuce, the beef was so spicy even though we asked for it to be mild, we couldn't eat it and sent it back. We complained and received a free rice pudding dessert (if that's any consolation).

I also noticed the same song had been playing over and over again for the full 3 hours we were there. It drove me crazy. The only good thing about this place was the Coombe Farm Pinot Noir.

Not worth it, bad experience and stingy portions. Avoid if you don't want to be embarrassed for choosing this place like I was!
Phoebe Huang
The food was ok however the service is the worst! Especially the owner of the restaurant! We've been waiting over 1 hour for our main course and friend of mine complained. The owner has really bad attitude! She said if we don't want to wait we can cancel our order. Very unprofessional! Will never come back!

BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU RATED THIS PLACE AT 1.0
we received calls from their reservation number since we gave this place 1.0 rating. Apparently they don't accept negative review and they will harass you by calling you at midnight.
Jpolinkos
What a let down!
I was expecting something a bit better, given some of the positive reviews, but left feeling extremely disappointed with the overall experience.
The pork and chive dumplings were so bland in taste. The braised 3 hour duck was borderline tough and the skin after braising for this amount of time was not rendered at all and still full of chewy fat. The Peking duck cones were OK but that's about all.
Staff were very pleasant, but the service was slow, even with only a few tables in service at the time.
We had to ask for menus and wine to be topped up.
Apart from the place being quite nice and staff smiley and friendly it had nothing much more to offer.
The food although well presented, was THE major let down.
Mistermister
Takes bookings! Service was ok but not great. Took a long time to the waitress to take orders. The food was yummy and of a food heat. The wine is kept on the side so they pour it for you. I would have preferred it to be on the table as it is really slow service. Our rice came out very late so food was salty without the rice to balance it out.

How hard can a dumpling be?

As the website suggested .... it's a Modern Chinese.

The right location, Liverpool St, the trendiest, hipped, fusion Asian food centrum of the CBD.
Super cool chic set up, light & airy (although we had the power down for half an hour, the fire/smoke alarm and fire brigade before we started our dinner), nonetheless it's cool. Fitted with Scandinavian inspired furniture, lighting, ceramic designed crockery and rich simple design, like it.
Comes with uniformed, groomed, good looking (according to my fellow ladies diner) French accent waiter and the coolest of everything in this approx. 50 seats restaurant ....
Thank God for the great company, food wise (dumpling), a disappointing night. Although A+ presentation but a bit ordinary at the rate that they are charging ... $12 for 6 steamed vegetarian dumplings, $14 for 6 pan fried Greenvale pork chives dumpling, $12 crispy chicken wasabi honey sauce, $12 for 2 Peking duck cones and so on - see photos.

Plenty of good wines on their list.

Maybe we should order their a la carte Menu next time ..... good dumplings shouldn't be that hard nor expensive to be enjoyed. I've now been to RuYi few times and on different occasions. The food and services has been sensational. The most recent occasion was a large group booking for 30th birthday dinner, 8 course set menu was ordered for the group. Not only was each course fresh, presented beautifully and packed full of flavor, the volume of food provided is also very impressive. While no none would describe RuYi as a budget restaurant, it is definitely excellent value, and i would recommend a visit.

It is a nice place compared with other Chinese restaurants. But, in honest, food is average, not delicious. Presentation is fine, which satisfied me a little bit. I think its been over rated a little bit.

Modern Chinese simply means Chinese Fine Dining in my opinion. The flavours are almost too familiar yet the dishes are visually foreign especially when you are expecting something Chinese food.

For the appetisers, we had the fried tofu, soft shell crab, egg plant fries and the xiao long bao. The fried tofu was delicious. Great firm texture with a light and crispy skin, served with a sweet soy sauce and Szechuan mayo. Light start and was definitely tasty. The soft shell crab was most importantly fried with a very light batter. Served with a citrus sauce, it definitely lighten the dish as needed. Xiao long bao tasted good and definitely more refined (in terms of the thinner skin) than those served in chinatown. The egg plant fries is a must have for egg plant lovers. Slightly spicy and caramelised, it was definitely a unique take on the traditional Szechuan egg plant dish.

For the mains, we had the Steamed Barramundi and Angus Firecrackers with fried mixed vegetable on the side. The fish tasted pretty much like a steamed whole fish in soy sauce in traditional chinese restaurants, only that it was fillet and served in a bowl. This point of differentiation is very much the presentation. Nailed the fish and sauce, presentation sets it apart. Angus Firecrackers are telling another story, the beef was extremely tender, stir fried in capsicum and pickled chilli and a whole lot of chilli seeds. Was very delicious and the seeds almost look intimidatingly spicy but trust me it is not. I guess bitting into the seeds is the firecracker element on the dish i believe. The mixed vegetable, with a * on it, was beyond disappointment. I could have make that with leftover veg in my fridge. Please, it tasted mediocre and the * don't belong there.

For desserts, we had the specials, ricotta dumplings served with a pistachio ice cream. Almost like fried ricotta tang yuen. Wasn't too sweet and very light in my opinion. We also had the banana fritters which was very crispy and the better was light as well. Again, not too sweet and was a good wrap up for tonight's dinner.

Ruyi used to be my favourite asian fusion restaurant in Melbourne CBD. I went again last week the service was still outstanding, the waiters and waitresses are trained at a very high standard very professional. However the food was disappointing compare to what I had last year in 2016. I ordered the wonton which was soaked in really strong black vinegar, it was so overwhelmingly sour when you put in your mouth that you want to cough. I wish the vinegar could be on the side or something so give customers a choice. Also the wagyu beef and numbing beef we had was not quite as great as last time, the wagyu was thicker cut lack of flavour and so hard to chew, which defeated the purpose of wagyu which meant to melt in your mouth!
Foodinfocusz
Modern Chinese cuisine presented in a modern, almost Scandinavian look, fit out. Highlights from the dishes we chose were the ‘Fried Tofu with Szechuan Mayo’ and the ricotta ‘doughnut’ dessert. As always friendly, professional service is all part of the relaxed dining experience.

This is probably the only restaurant in Melbourne that I will not be going back to ever again. Food was mediocre, definitely not worth the price. Though the staff were polite the wait was unacceptable. We had to wait for our table even when it was vacant and place settings were already done. Then waited ages to even get the menus. Then waited again to get someone to take our order even after asking multiple times. Then of course we waited a long time for the food. The first 4 courses came pretty quick after the first was served but the 5th course took ages. I had lost my appetite and my patience. I will never go back and will never recommend this place.

Flaming King Prawn and Black Angus Fire Cracker.
These dishes came recomended and didnt disappoint. Prawns were coked perfectly and presented on a flamming bed of salt. The angus just fell apart, rich deep flavour which was enhanced with the caramelised sause that coated the dish.
We did have to wait a while to order because there wasnt enough menus for our table and had to wait untill other tables were done. Dispite that, extremely courteous and professional team.

Friday night dinner catching up with the girls! My fave was the soft shell crab with salt and pepper. Also enjoyed the numbing beef and ruYi chicken wings. Had high expectations of the duck in master broth but that was just ok. The flaming prawns were pretty good too. For a cocktail and 4 small share plates and 1 main share plate it was about $43 per person.

Great spot for Valentine's Day 😊 we got the 5 meal banquet. It was so good and very filling. The chef picked what we got, but it was all really good and each dish complemented each other well. Only thing that wasn't good was that it took agesss to get our menus. But after that the service was really good
Rai_niefoodieme
My favorite restaurant in Melbourne and beyond. The whole experience from start to finish was spectacular! Service, presentation, flavor of each dishes. Extremely loved the chicken wings and numbing beef. All my friends agreed with me so.

I loved the fact that they had a nice selection of wines as well. It worth every each pennies which was all I could say!
Definitely will share with more friends and come back very soon!

I went with a group of 5 for the set menu for Chinese New Year and the food was great. It was 6 courses and the numbing beef, ruyi chicken wings and ruyi wagyu beef with mushrooms were standouts. Our waiter was very helpful and when we told them we had to be out by a certain time, they put a rush on the kitchen to get our meals out on time. Would definitely recommend.

It is a great time to enjoy Chinese food with my friends. I'm really fond of the environment of this restaurant, including design, light, service and atmosphere! The food here is pretty good coz of the taste ,dedicated dishes and good quality. The taste is a little bit sweet. So it is really a good restaurant for those who love sweet taste!
Abnerzhaozhe
There are a lot of chinese traditional food. Among them bao bao is the most suprising food, which is a kind of chinese sandwich with peijing duck inside. what's more, the staffs in this restaurant are friendly and patiently.
F1y2y3fy
the atmosphere is very attractive and the waiter is handsome haha. I really love the food some sweet some hot some sour. I love the candle on the table.
Andy Xu
Fantastic! The location is kind of difficult to find but the Chinese food is soooo delicious, even the most tasteful I have ever tried in Melb.
Chengcheng Feng
A restaurant blend Chinese cuisine with modern cook skills. The materials are really fresh and tasty. Besides, winters in this place is pretty professional and will never make you have any uncomfortable feel. My favorite dish is BAOBAO, which perfectly combined Chinese style to cheese, making the taste amazing.
Meng Chen
A unique modern Chinese restaurant, foods there are even better than traditional ones. Love 'Bao Bao' best! Great atmosphere and service. Staffs are friendly. Overall, a very good choice in Melbourne.
Ordered Foodora for their food which unfortunately was missing item in the delivery. Contacted the store and they asked me to contact Foodora for refund. Contacted Foodora and requested for a redeliver instead since it was a group dinner and the food is just not enough. A few minutes later Foodora called back saying the restaurant refused the order. Restaurant made a mistake and refused to take responsibility. Needless to say I won't be stepping anywhere near this restaurant anymore in the future.

I went there for dinner with my friends, the environment was comfy and relax, felt like at home, the food were totally excellent, the service was friendly and professional, I hight recommended this restaurant, definitely will back again.

Was were a little sceptical to check out this place but let me just say... I'm so glad we did. The food was amazing. The were three hungry boys dining so we ordered a lot of the menu and I can't honestly say there wasn't one fish we didn't enjoy. The standout was the braised duck and the beef in the main. The portion sizes are really generous and the service was really good. I have to say you don't normally get good desserts in a Chinese restaurant but the desserts here were really presented well and tasted beautiful.
Congl2
The food here is surprising. We have homemade tofu. I really like the texture. So creamy. And then the flame prawn is also my favorite, delicious and spectacular. The flame is really lovely. Hahahaha. We also have the eggplant and the chicken wings. People love spicy shouldn't miss the wings. But my most most most favorite is the pudding. I sincerely think it's the best pudding I ever have had in Melbourne. Really authentic!!!!!! It's a good dinning experience!
Shirley
This place is very good compare to many of the fusion/modern Chinese food restaurant. Surprisingly, unlike other fusion restaurants, the food here still has the original Chinese taste. Plus, it has a modern furnishing setting that is nice and cosy.
Tara
Absolutely delicious! We ordered a take away dinner, staff were very warm and friendly. All our dishes were amazing, so many fresh flavours! The numbing beef & chicken wings a highlight for us! Would definitely recommend.
Victor1991
My girlfriend and I went to there a few days ago.We had a wonderful dining experience. My favourite dishes were chicken wings and toufu.Especially the chicken wings which was the best I have ever had.
Darian
Worst service I have ever experienced!!
First they wouldn't allow us to use our zomato deal, when seated in front of a hence night and asked to move to a quieter spot we were put on bar stools in the corner... Despite other tables being available and booking 6 weeks in advanced
Cocktails were disgusting
40 min wait for our mains and 25 min wait for desserts
Despite the food being good the service was pathetic
Flora
I went to this restrauant with my boyfriend last night.I have to say this dining experience was fantastic. My favourite dishes were dufu, eggplants and chicken wings which were pretty appeal to my taste. In addition, my boyfriend adored the RuYi cocktail and couldn't stop praising it. In a word, we enjoyed eating in this place and we will definitely come here again!
MaTo3735
It's a bit overrated. Taste wise, there are other places with so much better food. Chicken wing came out raw so we had to send it back. Steamed barramundi is too sweet according to my taste. Flamin king prawn is actually 'meatless'. I think the highlight is Szechuan eggplant fried. Price wise way to expensive. Won't be coming back.
LoveToEat
Went to Ruyi for my birthday dinner, food were delicious and will be back again someday. Ordered numbing beef, flaming king prawn, fried chicken wings, braised duck, cumin pork ribs, fried rice. Personally, numbing beef was my favourite! The meat was so tender and flavoursome, I could eat a big bowl of it! Their customer service was excellent too. A bit pricey but I think it's worth it.

Few of my friends recommended this place to me. Finally i came with my girl friend for dinner last friday. The place was packed, the music was fatanstic, even though, the service was still on top notch. The waiter who served us was very informative and attentive, he always there when we need him which was truly amazing. We loved the eggplant fries, numbing beef, chilli wonton, steamed fish fillet... The must try is the chicken wing, the best in the town. Will be back soon.

Best chinese i have ever had. i have been warned before i came to australia, there is no really good chinese restaurant in Melbourne, most of them are old fashioned, some new ones are way to spicy. I didn't have high expectation before the dinner yesterday, even though they have great reviews. After dinner, I was blew away by the quality of the food and the high standards of the service. The restaurant is beautiful, looked elegent in the dim lights, we have got very warm greeting by the waiters. We have ordered one cocktail each and 6 home plates to share beteeen 2 of us under the waiter's recomerdation. Every single plate is wonderful, can taste the freshness from the ingredients. The sauce is unique, never had in any other asia restaurant. We decided to try some dessert which we don't usually do in asia restaurants. The ricota dumpling was so delicious. Every thing spot on, this will become our regular dinner place for sure.
Ilana Bueno De Mesquita
I really enjoyed my experience here. The waiter was knowledgeable on the menu and extensive wine list and was able to make some great suggestions. We shared a range of dishes and was very satisfied with the quality and service.

Terrible. Took so long for food to come! We arrived with plenty of time had to leave for the theatre and didn't get to eat. Hopeless service.

Thanks to my friend, he highly recommended me to try Ruyi.
I was amazed by the interior design and the most delicious Chinese food I have ever had in Melbourne!
I ordered fried tofu with Szechuan Mayo, pork and crab sharp long bao, Ruyi fried chicken wings, tingling prawn and Ruyi Szechuan eggplant fries. They were all fantastic, especially the tofu and eggplant fries! The sauces were amazing!
Last but not least...dessert!!!! I tried the latest version of sago pudding! Yum yum! 😋😋
I will surely come back Ruyi!

Today I had a wonderful dinner with my friend in this restaurant . We loved the food so much ... We were ordered the tofu : fried tofu with Szechuan sauce , the tofu so soft , looks like a baby's skin, bcz of its homemade . RuYi szechuan eggplant is cute dish , it looks like chips but there are many tastes to cover the eggplant , this is not a simple dish. My favorite dish is Tingling prawn, the sauce was amazing and the prawn was fresh. We ordered shao long bao as well, it's traditional south of China's food and I love it so much .... After all dished , we have some dessert : sago pudding , it was lovely , they made the pudding looks like a fish.

In my opinion : 5 dishes are enough for 2 people .

This is a good place to have a delicious food and funny with ur friends and family . The service is very kind and very friendly ....

Don't waste your time coming here: the food is regular, some dishes were served cold and I could feel a tension in the air, the restaurant manager acted like a dictator although her staff was nice. I guess you can find more interesting Chinese places around.
Clare
I enjoyed everything about this restaurant. The fit out is beautiful. The food was delicious. Everything we ordered was full of flavour and thoughtfully presented. The service was great - restrained and understated, yet friendly and attentive. I am looking forward to going back again soon.

Came here in recommendation

Must say the place is quite cool and staff are very friendly

Good very tasty and enjoyable

Must say the fried chicken wings were very spicy and probably the best ever chicken wings I put in my mouth will be back

Minimalistic, modern fitout opposite Rice Paper Scissors in the CBD. Modern take on Chinese, in essence distilling the large share dishes into diner friendly tapas portions. Went for the Chinese New Year dinner which was merry and festive. The Chinese banquet menu was well designed, managing to distill the classical Chinese flavours into a cohesive meal. Also have had the dumplings there before, the xiao long bao were plump, juicy and just the right level of unctuousness.
DocJonFoodie
Loved the food and service. The food was well prepared and full of flavour. Service was excellent. Everything we had (8 course set menu) was delicious. Was definitely full by the end of the meal, and even needed to take some home as we couldn't finish everything. Definitely a great night out and I would highly recommend this place for fantastic modern chinese food.
BlueJay
Lacking the patience one evening to wait for a table at Rice Paper Scissors thought we'd try the near empty (weeknight) RuYi across the lane and was pleasantly surprised. Have since been back twice (to considerably bigger crowds!). The service was good when quiet, but on a particularly busy Saturday was a little slower..however still very friendly and the tardiness was obviously busy-ness not laziness which helps you feel for them. Highlights for me are definitely the Fried Tofu - absolutely fabulous as were the eggplant chips (no, I'm not vegetarian, but these both have great texture, flavour and interest). Peking Duck cone very very good, chicken wings solid as were the prawns. Chilli wontons.. well I'm a sucker for HuTong so in my book probably not quite there, but I think that's just a personal preference. Quality was still good. This place is simple and non-pretentious - you can book; and you don't feel like you're being a burden if you want to take your time. This place is definitely going on the rotation and wouldn't hesitate to bring others.

Ruyi is a modern Chinese restaurant located at Liverpool Laneway in Melbourne’s Chinatown. The name Ruyi is derived from a spiritual object that was a family heirloom looted by the Red Guards during the time of the Cultural Revolution. It is owner Sheng’s aspiration to bring his own form of Ruyi to others through the pure enjoyment of beautiful food. And the exquisitely presented mouthwatering cuisine at Ruyi delivers. Out of respect for traditional Chinese culture, the restaurant is decorated in sumptuous crimson and jade tones. Sheng works with several local artisans and is very adamant about using gorgeous handpicked earthenware versus stoneware to compliment his carefully composed dishes. The Peking Duck Cone was cooked to perfection garnished with a sweet plum sauce. The signature Ruyi Szechwan eggplant fries are prepared in a way that prevents the vegetable from absorbing huge amounts of oil resulting in crunchy succulent fries. And the Salt and pepper soft shell crab in gluten-free batter with citrus sauce was tasty down to the last crumb.

I went here with friends, we ordered 6 home plates, 2 sides and dessert. RuYi chicken wings + Szechuan eggplant fries + Numbing beef the black angus eye fillet + market crab and pork soup bursting dumpling + oyster blade beef wagyu beef + fried rice with salmon caviar and shrimp = very satisfying! The foods are amazing, even though their slogan is "taste of everyday casual eating in China", this restaurant is good at representing the Chinnese taste of the food in contemporary way and its taste spectacular! As well as the design of the foods' appearances and the design of the restaurant designed very contemporary modern. Overall the restaurant's vibe is warm and elegantly homey, made us feel comfortable and convenient. Their bathroom very clean and really freshen. Yet, their services and the staffs are friendly and helpful to their customers. The prices are fair and satisfying. I'd love to come back here agoain for lunch/dinner with friends or family 💫

I'm always a little sceptical of upmarket Chinese places because I've often found them to be more style than substance, but I was impressed by RuYi. We shared a couple of dishes - the barramundi, the tofu with szechuan mayo, the chinese broccoli and (for my friends) the pork ribs. The barramundi and tofu were outstanding; full of flavour but not in an overwhelming way. The chinese broccoli was fairly standard but it is a side dish so that is fairly understandable.

Service was very good though at times more attentive than what I'm used to or would prefer.

All in all, an excellent dining experience and I'd definitely go back.
Angel Putritama
Found this place by accident when we walk around city. We gave it a try and never been wrong! We order 6 home dishes. And all of them were very good! Not your typical Chinese! The atmosphere was very warm, super friendly staff makes our overall experience memorable! My favourite dishes are the eggplants and the chicken wings!!!! Oh! And the xiao long bao is very fresh!!
Two Sheds
Really liked it. The decor is chic and modern. The staff are lovely. We thought the food was outstanding. Wine list was fine too. Did a brisk trade on the Friday night we were there. Not cheap but the quality was really there. I'm keen to return.

The food at RuYi appears simple, but the flavours have remarkable depth - Fried tofu with a Szechuan mayo and the szechwan eggplant fries are two dishes that have me marking a calendar date for my next visit.
RuYi provided a high level of service, a delicious and inventive menu, an understanding and acceptance of dietary requirements and a warm, chic, modern environment. A fantastic edition to Liverpool Street and my new 'go to' for Chinese up the top end. Love love love love love.
Weloveourlamb
Had a fantastic experience- very attentive staff that catered for our group which included several different dietary requirements. Lots of variety in the classic dishes which had a modern twist. Eggplant sticks were a highlight!

Recently hit up RuYi with friends and it was so divine. The service was incredible and THAT FOOD..wow. It made an eggplant fan out of me which is extremely hard to do. Please do yourself a favor and head on over - you will not be disappointed :)

I recently had the pleasure of dining with friends at Ruyi! The food and service was fantastic and the great wine selections really complimented the unique flavours on offer. Not knowing quite what to expect I was delighted by the diversity of the menu and rather impressed by the attention to detail which for such a small venue was well beyond expectation. I can highly recommend the tofu! It was great to also enjoy a great variety of gluten free options which can be often tricky with Chinese food. above all the stunning minimalist decor and soft lighting made the experience all the more enjoyable. A hidden gem not to be missed!
Cody
Thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Ruyi 2 weeks back. We had a large group, and everyone was well catered for. Quite a few vegetarians and celiacs on our table, but there were many dishes to share around. The highlight for us were the fried tofu squares. I wouldn't normally order tofu on it's own but this dish was delicious, packed with flavour and texture.

The restaurant venue was modern and very pretty with wonderful service. Would definitely return.
Larissa Salesforce
Good service, nice space, beautiful stoneware dishes and presentation however the food completely misses the mark. Its bland and everything has a weird sweet taste to it. We had a 5 course meal and of it, two dishes were OK. The other 3 were disappointing.
Trinh Ly
Stumbled across this restaurant after an unsuccessful attempt to get a table at a nearby restaurant. I think the food here was a bit of a modern fusion on Chinese cuisine. The decor was lovely and stylish. Food was enjoyable but nothing special.
TJ
Really enjoyed our experience here. Food was delicious, my first experience with 'modern' Chinese and i wasn't disappointed. We went for the banquet and after finding out it was a birthday dinner the very friendly waitress brought out a Ruyi Cocktail on the house!
Chris
Visited Ruyi based on Broadsheet's recommendation. My experience contrasted with most of the ones I've read about.

Due to the New Year festivities we were steered towards the 8 course set menu. Was not unhappy about this--it's an excuse, I guess, to try a reasonable portion of the restaurant's menu. Yeah, it's a bit more expensive than a lot of what's on offer re: Chinese food, but it's hardly insane if the food is good. And therein lies the rub ...

The food, to be frank, isn't good. Seven of the eight courses were varying degrees of 'okay'. Most of them were bland. Not in a some sort of understated, 'we're all about subtle flavours in here' kind of way, but plain old *bland*. I don't think they were shooting for understated, given one the sauce for one dish was gloopy in that 'Revenge of the Corn Starch' kind of way. With one exception of the penultimate savoury course, none of them were bad--they were just uninteresting. Tinkering with classics seemed to mean 'well, we replaced the pork with crab'. Tinkering with the classics *should* mean that the new version of whatever the dish is--san choy bao, XLB--tastes superior to the old one. Or, at least, nice enough or interesting enough to be regarded as worthy in its own right.

The killer for me was the lobster. Now, an $85 set menu may be 'expensive' by the standards of a lot of the places on or along Little Bourke Street ... but it's not expensive if you're getting lobster. Lobster's expensive, right? Unsurprisingly, we were talking a cheap frozen tail here. Personally, I think lobster's one of those things where if you don't have the food budget to do it properly, you don't do it at all. It's not like crab where there are numerous cheaper options that can rather pleasant (e.g. spanner crab, blue swimmer)--lobster, by its nature, is a luxurious thing. A frozen tail's a bad place to start. What made it worse was that it was served, pretty much, as a half tail. Bits of meat disguised in a dumpling? You *might* get away with that. But an overcooked, not-even-loosened-from-the-shell, not-even-portioned-so-it-can-be-easily-consumed-with-chopsticks frozen tail? Horrid. An utterly wretched, inedible, irredeemable dish. To be fair to Ruyi's staff, they accepted the complaint and offered a replacement (the same dish). When we declined they quietly deducted $10 from the bill.

The cold noodle salad was, perhaps, the pick of the dishes we had. The fried tofu had a nice enough crust, I guess, although two portions per person was perhaps overly generous given the nature of the dish. The barramundi tasted a bit like a tea towel, but that's the average barramundi experience for you, I guess.

Avoid.

Tonight my friends and I had dinner at Ruyi, a new contemporary Chinese restaurant on Liverpool St in the CBD. The venue is chic and minimalist in design, with beautiful crockery and modern vibes.

Owners Qian Qian and Sheng go that extra mile to look after you and their food is divine. Designed for sharing with lots of sweet flavours and vegetarian dishes. The fried tofu dish with Szechuan Mayo was delicious as were the pan friend pork & chive dumplings. My favourite were the sweet eggplant Szechuan fries.

Highly recommended for intimate dinners and small groups. And gluten free available :)
Wolf Of Collins St.
I don't like asian food and I had to go with my work colleagues so I can't judge the food; but service was fantast, and the average food rating by my colleagues who are professional asian eater was 3 out of 5, & I've add half a point for service. Hope it helps.
Victor Chau
Liked the eggplant fries and the ribs. Only got to try the Ruyi and Ginger cocktails but both were nice although I am a gin fan. Would return here to try their $49 5 course set menu.

Friendly staff too!
Andy C
Good if you're looking to accommodate a big group on a Friday night without a booking as the place won't be packed! Service is pushy and annoying almost. Asking how the food is every 3 minutes
Helloliu
We ordered a pork dish as main, it served with salad leaves.

Unfortunately my friend found a live green colored salad worm on her plate half way of finishing the dish. and it killed our appetites straight away.

We called the wait staff, and then the manager came to talk to us. She claimed this little incident can happen at home. We did not disagree with her. However, we received no apologizes from the manager at all for this little incident that ruined our dinner. Not even a simple phrase "Sorry".

We called the manager again a few minutes later ask about how we will be charged for this particular dish. The manager claim we have already ate half of the dish, the worm showed up half way so we should be charged at half price for pork dish. We were in totally shock. By request the manager unwillingly waive the cost of this dish.

The circumstances may be unavoidable for a busy restaurant but as the customer, we were very upset by how the management deal with this issue.

This restaurant was recommended by friends, but I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone else. Food is average. Terrible management.
Genevieve Clare Dickson
Great food, great decor and most importantly for me, an excellent range of gluten free, which can be hard to come by for Chinese cuisine! Eggplant fries were a favourite

Absolutely enjoyed their generous serving and high quality Asian cooking.. Had their lunch special and was just delighted that I came. Impeccable service and great ambience too.

Was there on Oakes Day so I am not sure if it was quiet as a result but the $29 lunch special is excellent value and should have attracted more diners. The Cumin pork ribs were tender and juicy - the cumin was powerful but not unpleasant. The duck braised in master stock was to die for. Our waiter recommended the fried tofu with Szechuan mayo for a vegetarian and the vegetarian dumpling and they certainly were a hit. As we were leaving the skies opened in a tropical down pour. The staff were excellent - loaned us umbrellas and suggested that we bring the car to the front door. Very courteous staff through out our lunch. Well worth a visit. Come on Melbourne this place needs your support.

perfect venue for an enjoyable dinner adventure, suitable for couple/friends who'd like to have a sound conversation without disrupt by noises all around. The interior display and decoration are well designed with a naturally modern outlook. The food is definitely awesome and worth the money, highly recommend the specially homemade tofu, and the cumin pork rib, though it looks like fried it doesn't taste oily at all, very healthy and tasty!seasonably selected ingredients, natural sauce, few artificial seasoning all contributing to the impeccably wonderful food.

Had dinner with another friend tonight and both of us enjoyed our experience. In my opinion, RuYi is a definitely a stand-out among all Chinese restaurants in Melbourne. Their food is fresh and delicious. The atmosphere here is enjoyable, good for you to go with a couple of friends having chats while enjoying traditional Chinese food cooking in a modern way! Their dishes are quite creative, and I'm sure that the chef has put a lot of heart and soul when preparing them. My favourite dish is the fried tofu, of course others also very tasty, but the tofu has got to be one of the best tofu I've tried in recent years. The service is also in high standard, the staff is very friendly, and would always come to your table and make sure if everything is ok. I've heard from other people saying prices at RuYi are too high, but I reckon it's worth every penny. Definitely not a bad idea to dine here time to time.

Had a corporate dinner here for clients. The food was fantastic, the wine well matched and the service was friendly. The atmosphere was perfect. Highly recommended.

One of best Chinese Restaurant in Town! We had ( Meat Bao Bao) which was amazing ! And Flaming king prawn which was very special! We just love all the dishes what we order! We had a great night! Thank you Ruyi :) Highly recommended!!

RuYi is a seriously awesome restaurant. We've visited 5+ times and everytime impresses us and the friends we take with us. Sheng and Qian Qian are always wonderful hosts. The imaginative tastes on the food and cocktails make the dining experience memorable and one that we tell people about everytime we discuss food!

Had lunch here today after seeing on Dimmi's it has a $29 pp express set lunch until next Monday. Normally it's $35 but the one we had today also included a glass of wine each which was alright in terms of value. We went in at 2pm and were one of the only two tables there - it was past peak lunch hour so it was good being able to enjoy the quietness of the place to ourselves. Felt like sitting inside a high-end brunch place instead of Chinese restaurant. We weren't told what was included in the set menu, even though I did see it on the Dimmi's website (couldn't remember). They didn't even ask if we had any dietary requirements. Normally people would ask that if they're serving a set menu, right? Anyway, that's not important to us because neither of us are fussy eaters. Soon the food started coming out. The crispy chicken with their unique honey wasabi sauce was nicely fried and the sauce was indeed quite special. The second dish consisted of a vegetarian gua bao each, and it had a mixture of ingredients such as turnip, mushroom, coriander and spring onions etc. After finishing the first two miniature entrees we were hoping to have a bigger sized main because we were still very hungry. We were a bit awestruck when our braised duck main dish came because all I got was two duck legs while hubby got one small slice of duck meat smaller than the size of our palm. He was a bit angry because he knew he would definitely leave the place hungry. I tried to persuade him by telling him that this is what to expect with "fine dining". I also knew that I wasn't going to be full. The duck was good too but it just wasn't anything overly amazing. Many other Chinese restaurants can also achieve this level at half the price and twice the portion. I do think this place is worth trying out once, but don't go expecting to leave the place with a full tummy and do expect to pay a premium price for similar food you could get at cheaper places elsewhere, you're essentially paying for the ambience, service and presentation of food just like you do at most high-end restaurants.

I am from adelaide, only in Melbourne for 3days to visit my cousin. Ruyi ruined my whole food journey in Melbourne. It is so over rated and over priced, big money for some low quality food.
The batter of tingling prawn was soggy, and when you press it, the oil actually came out, that mean the batter recipe is not right, batter should always be crunchy and free of visible oil. The sizes of those prawns varies, not unified at all, it is not acceptable consider the price and has only 5serve for the table.
The fried rice was serve lukewarm, instead of hot which it should be, and the chef put flying fish roe in the rice, because the roe is so tiny the residual heat from the rice totally cooked through the roe. So instead of popping and vibrant it taste powdery, and you know what else is powdery? Uncooked rice!!!!!!!!!! What a combination, undercooked rice and cooked fish roe.
The manager is very pushy to sale expensive dishes, he kept talking and totally ignore the fact that 2/5 us are vegetarian, and had as very late lunch. He kept saying the oyster blade beef is the most expensive cuts, while anyone who do shopping would know oyster blade is a secondary cheap cut, and it has a visible sinew in the middle and should be slow cooked in order to break the sinew down. However the chef there decide to fry it, so really ruined a beautiful slow cook cut and the tendon turned out chewy instead of soft and melting in you mouth.
Oh and the price, 5 of us spent more than 300, when 2 of us only ordered 2 vegetarian dish, they came out hungry and we come out half full. And guess what, my parents and I only spent less than 90 opposite the strewn in rice paper scissors, and we had lovely flavored satisfying food and we came out full.
And I read the review on trip adviser, so many reviews who gave RUYI 5 stars are actually one off reviewers. The ratings are much lower from those who has more than 10 reviews. So can't help think if RUYI paid for those one off reviewers to give 5 stars. Sad and pathetic.

Probably my worst eating nightmare came true. I just hate restaurants who think they know what they are doing and charge you heaps for it. I am happy to pay if the experience matches. Gosh, the food was plain, the presentation had little thought, nice idea to put caviar in the rice but way too early so they were all cooked (good luck feeling them pop in your mouth as other reviews suggested)… The manager introduced...introduced...and INTRODUCED for minutes about its food, and seriously, it is tooo much, starting to make me feel really uncomfortable. In the end, paid over 300 for a dinner for 5 and we left still hungry. Start to think whether those reviewers got paid for leaving such unrealistically positive reviews..

The service of the venue was stellar, the waiter serving us was very friendly and described us each dish in great detail making the experience so much better. Me and my friend ordered the 8 course meal which was what some would call on the expensive side but the food, service and overall atmosphere was worth it. One of the few locations I would see fit to take a lady for a date, and the venue remains on my 'must visit again' list, being probably the top venue so far. Worth every penny!

A great night in RUYI.
I booked RUYI last Monday for us, surprisely they were quite busy on Monday evening, but the whole atmosphere still calm and elegant. The food is amazing, service is friendly and graceful. They really knows when we need them.
Strongly recommend the new beef dish, fresh ingredients with that zingy sauce, one of the best beef dish I have ever had. We share a bottle of healthcote Syrah, the evening was perfect, will be back soon.
Cedric
Love the service, love the food, love the space. Everything spot on, considering it was such a busy night, food and service still can maintain in high standard, well done!
Food was average, some of the dishes were cold including the flaming prawns, the pork buns were good though. Not sure about the light chili green beans that we couldn't find any sign of chili in the limp and cold beans. We asked the waiter about the lack of chili who noted that the style of clientele they attract don't like chili. Service was average having to wait a while to order. unfortunately don't think we will back.

On Liverpool Street, easily located just off Bourke St, sits Ruyi - a nice restaurant with a really cool interior. We saw this restaurant pop up on one of Broadsheet’s lists and their menu looked amazing, so we decided to pay them a visit tonight. Translating literally to ‘as you wish’, the name Ruyi derives from a Chinese heirloom symbolising power and good fortune.

Had dinner with my friends. We like the food and staffs here. Particularly the woton! The staffs are nice and helpful. We will definitely visit back!

What a fantastic spot in the CBD! Consistently great food. Love the dumplings! Great service everytime we've visited! Looking forward to going back soon.

Amazing food, friendly staff and a fantastic atmosphere. We tried a little bit of everything, but the highlight was the prawns and eggplant. Would definitely recommend this place to all of my friends!

Food was absolutely delicious. The wings sang Choy bow were a definite highlight! I would definitely come again! Fairly prices and an easy location next to parliament.

Great restaurant which discovered by randomly walking around lonsdale street. Staff are really nice and the service is excellent! Food is also really delicious with the combination of Chinese and western dishes. Me and my family have a lovely dinner there.

Nice small place to have a quiet meal with friends. Friendly staff and the meals are a delicious delicacy. The mix of flavors give your taste buds a ride. My favourite was the fried tofu where the outside was crispy and inside was tender.
Leslie Xian
It is a very interesting Chinese restaurants with nice western brunch type decoration. The food was great although not very Chinese in general. And exceptional service by the waiters and manager. Great experience overall
Brian
Delicious modern chinese cuisine, with traditional sauces with a unique tint complimenting chicken, tofu and seafood dishes. Great service and atmosphere. Perfect for any occasion especially a romantic one if you're a candle and dim lighting person! Definitely will return!

The overall experience was amazing with great service and charming decoration. I love the tables made by wood. Staffs were friendly. Environment was cozy. We didn't wait to long for the first dish to come out.

The food was delicious!! I love the fired tofu, which was soft and light. Fried noodles made me remind of my hometown.

This is a place I definitely will come again!!!

If u want a special Chinese restaurant u don't want to miss Ruyi!

This is the second time I've come to Ruyi and it is still as authentic and classic as usual. One of the greatest things I love here were their extremely friendly and caring waiting staffs and the relaxing and cozy atmosphere. Most importantly, the highlight of today is definitely that they were playing Jay Chau's music in the background!!!

Today we had the duck soup to start with, spicy wonton, chicken wings and tofu to share, and lastly fried noodle. The soup is perfect as an appetiser, tasty enough but not too filling. I was craving for proper wonton soup for a long time and this spicy wonton dish just fulfilled my dream. The chicken wings were cooked in a combination of Mexican and modern Chinese manner. It was smoked first and then fried in Chinese sauce. The special homemade tofu was my old time favourite. It is nothing like the normal tofu I've had in other Chinese restaurants, this one is a lot more more silky and flavoured with the mayo and teriyaki sauce. This is definitely a must try in Ruyi, highly recommended, you'll get no other like this anywhere else.

Overall, this is definitely the best modern Chinese restaurant in town. Must come and try once and surely you'll come here twice like I did!!
Very very good services and very very nice food at Ruyi!! I really like the way they cook spicy chicken wings and the tofu. They are just being so good!!!
I have been to Ruyi twice, I will definitely come back again. ;)

good service and unbelievable food and wine. Really enjoy the wagyu steak. very nice staff and warm environment. so happy to have dinner with friend here.

They offer very good service and fantastic food and wine quality. like everything especially the wagyu steak, best of ever. will definitely be back.

Interesting Chinese restaurants nicely decorated with cozy warm colours. Dishes are traditional Chinese fusion with modern again cuisines. Interesting combination of flavours. Recommended the tasting menu.
Jolee Pink
I appreciated the opulent, traditional red jade tones of the decor and the hand selected gorgeous stoneware specifically chosen to compliment the perfectly balanced dishes. The tasty Peking duck cone was served with a sweet plum sauce. The signature succulent Szechwan eggplant fries were prepared in a way that prevented the vegetable from absorbing huge amounts of oil. And the salt and pepper soft shell crab in gluten-free batter with citrus sauce was delectable down to the last crumb.

A little restaurant, tucked away in the top end of the city. Right next to the Parliament House, and a few streets away from the famous Pellegrini's.

It has a lovely welcoming interior. And the staff are lovely when you walk in, they welcome you, pull out the chair and all that amazing stuff.

We sat down, Fig Jam and I, and were given the menu. Straight away I spotted a few things I would love to have. The Wagyu Beef, the Flaming King Prawns and the Soft Shell Crab.

It was a tough decision, but we finally decided on the Wagyu, Chicken Wings, Soft Shell Crab, the Flaming King Prawns and Rice to add on the side.

Quickly, but not to fast the food came out.
The food was yum.
Every flavour matched perfectly, the sauce and the food.

The service was very good. Friendly and polite. They topped up drinks every now and then, and he knew the menu very well; he explained every dish in detail.

At the end, we were very full. A delicious meal. And worth every cent.

This is one restaurant we were looking forward to dine. But the hype and excitement died soon after we arrived... Here's why.

They took a long while to take our orders, kept pushing to try their wine as well, which wasn't a great range as they claimed.

Food service was okay, although they decided not to give their suggestions on the food after we snubbed their mediocre wine list.

The main problems are their servings, beware their so called large portions are really just appetizer size. You could literally count the pieces of beef.

Their Peking Duck is a total joke. No crispy skin, no sauce. Simon's Peking Duck is way way better by 50 ducks points. They have this small piece of pull pork bun, that cost $9 for such a small piece...

Their fish, is market priced which is fine but it wasn't fresh at all. I could tell it was kept frozen from the taste. Which only explained why it arrived so bloody late, when we were almost done with dinner. Not recommended.

The lead waiter tried very hard to play it down by saying it's usually takes very long. But they should have told us, give guest an idea that your previous fish will arrive desserts times. They have absolute no sense in that.

Last but not least, their food is too sweet. If I wanted to eat this much of sugar I would have just had candies for dinner. The feedback given was meh... We were told it's a personal preference...

Don't waste your time, even more so don't risk entertaining someone here before you try. Liverpool Street has another great restaurant, a Vietnamese fushion across and that beats this eatery ten folds.

By the lack lustre service, over sweetened food and over priced food considering the size, I would not recommend this place.

Their portion of food is suitable for ants, and don't expect any fast service if you did not pick one of their lousy wines.

Ruyi, it's concept and it's philosophy is only a sale pitch that couldn't live up to its name and hype.

I've been to better kebab shops...
Ppl0530
Service is delightful but food is over priced. If you prefer a quiet dining environment with class, then this place is worth a visit.
I do like its idea of modern Chinese cuisine.
Tony
This is the restaurant must spent a lot of money on social media for marketing, look at their recent 5.0 ratings, all the photo was in a similar professional style. They had really modern design, but when come to food, it's average Chinese food and really not worth for money. For those people looking for decent Chinese restaurant, go for somewhere else and I won't come back again.
Lynn Konnie
Tried the banquet in a group sitting.
The staff were lovely & attentive (except for providing the bill).
Vegetarian options are not their specialty.. The main dish in the banquet was a mountain of Kung pow chicken bites on a lining of warm lettuce, whereas the veg plate was less than a sides worth of steamed broccoli & tofu.

A fantastic place to dine in. Had a really great expereince. They have an excellent service and awesome food. I love the mixed vegetables where the sauce is not too strong. The wagyu beef is super tasty using M7/M9 the highest grade of meat. The fried tofu have a crispy skin and super soft tofu inside. They have this unique fried eggplant. Resemble frenchfries but its eggplant. Its healthy and tasty. All the food are tasty. And they change their menu every season.

Such a great experience tonight at Ruyi! Amazing food especially the dumplings YUM! Such great service and atmosphere and will be visiting again soon!
Gabby
This place is definitely a place to come visit no matter which side of the city your on, it's worth the travel. Very difficult to choose a favourite but of I had to it would be the amazing fried tofu YUM! Definitely be coming back to this amazing place with spectacular food and service!

Such a beautiful evening at Ruyi. Aside from the impeccable service and friendly nature of the staff, the food is absolutely one of a kind. Although impossible to pick a favourite, highlights of the evening included their famous 'eggplant fries', these are out of this world, packed with amazing flavour. A definite must see in Melbourne.
Experience to RuYi was average.. I love the idea of bringing Chinese cuisine to next level like Spanish tapas (not yumcha LOL). interior design of restaurant was great.. Cosy and modern.. However manager tried to place us to a table which is next to cutlery and service station when restaurant was not full at all. I didn't feel comfortable with this arrangement and I requested to change, end up got a better seats and happy. Food was good. Not surprisingly exceed expectation... I will recommend this restaurant if want to have quiet and cosy environment for a nice chat as its pretty good atmosphere, not noisy and with interesting cocktail with Chinese twist.
Lastly one of the staff was so nice... He made me wanted to revisit.. Good staff. Hope the manager can do the same to his customer... Generally staff are work better than the manager @ruyimelbourne #ruyimelbourne @melbournespoon #melbournespoon

It was really good experience, the staff really nice and I do think the bat tender really hot, lol.
The food was really good, due to I am vegetarian so I can only eat veges but I am glad I order the fried tofu, the inside was really soft and the outside skin was really crunchy, we asked why was that, and the staff mentioned this was handmade tofu, expire date really short so everything made was fresh. We order baobao it was made of Peking duck, I can't have it but according to my friend she said it was super good, she like the sauce inside. Lol
Sorry we eat first.....

nice Chinese restaurant! the food is qualified and the price is really valuable..Love the atmosphere of the restaurant..The staff is lovely and friendly.

Very nice food.Really like the dumpling and the sauce here are very special compare to other restaurants. The atmosphere here are also good, really love the design and the lights. Staff are all friendly. Would definitely recommend and rate this restaurant.

This is a really great restaurant. I went with my friend and we had dumplings, tofo and chicken wings which all have great tastes. The service is good and the decoration is really lovely. I really enjoyed eating here that I reckon it is a good place for friends to have a chat and dinner.

IT is very nice place. The food here is fantastic. It's a good place for you to relax and enjoy everything. Highly recommended. The food is very fresh and high quality. I will come to this one again. Best Chinese restaurant in Melbourne to me. By the way services here is also good !

When I went into Ruyi, the first impression is a sense of belonging that brings me back to my hometown, which is located in China. The restaurant decorates with wooden furnitures, such as chairs, tables and other delicate ornaments. Some small lush plants are hung on the wall, making the whole restaurant more vibrant. The manager is a polite and kind person who introduces the menu patiently. First dish is crispy chicken with honey wasabi sauce. It is pretty exquisite and the taste is special which gives you strong shake. Because the first feeling is salt and then turns into sweet followed by a little bit bitter. Next dish is steamed vegetarian dumplings. I was fascinated by its green appearance, the chef tells me because it was made of vegetable and flour in order to make this dish more healthy. Last dish is baobao, which is a contemporary style of mixture of Beijing duck and Chinese hamburger . As a result, the taste which is creamy is distinct from the transitional one, but I love this creative feeling!
In conclusion, this is a new but delicious restaurant. I will come here next time~

If u want to try the most Chinese style food in the most modern way, ruyi is a great choice that u can enjoy in Melbourne CBD. The materials are extremely fresh and cooked in an matching ways, maintaining the Chinese based appearance. The dumplings is the most traditional food in China but it is cooked in new style with different kinds of Chinese vegetable inside. And the Peking duck baobao is totally fresh. It is a creation on the traditional duck which is crispy. And by the way, the decoration of the restaurant is really comfortable and natural. You can enjoy ur meal like in your home but it is not at home, is anther relaxing place for u!

A fantastic modern take on Chinese dishes.. I went with a friend who like me is vegetarian and were recommended some very good dishes including the Sichuan eggplant dish. The menu may at first seem quite limited but this is because such focus is given on each dish to make it as good as it can be. The service was very friendly and the setting very fresh. Also, for what is a more up-market Chinese restaurant the prices were very reasonable. Definitely worth a visit!

Had a big family birthday there and the staff were incredible at setting the whole thing up. The five course banquet was AMAZING. The duck buns in particular were absolutely top notch. Decor was lovely and staff were incredibly nice. Would absolutely recommend.

Fabulous experience
It was recommended to us as a great place for Chinese food, but it is so much more, it is an experience. Food is delicious especially the Mexican style chicken wings. The service is very nice, the handsome waiter patiently introduce the menu and food. And atmosphere was great, it is a romantic place to go with girlfriend. In addition, Cocktail is amazing and enjoy myself. I'm 'looking forward a new brilliant experience in the next visit

The food at Ruyi appears simple, but the flavors have remarkable depth. Ruyi is known best for its range of Chinese western style dishes, and the reputation is well deserved. The fried eggplants is well cooked n yet special. A host of other goodies, including chicken wings, roasted duck Bao, showing that every dishes r well thought to satisfy costomers. The shop is both clean and tidy—despite having limited space—and all the staff members there greeted my companions and me with smiles. I would thoroughly recommend Ruyi to anyone. I know I'll certainly be returning soon.

The idea of mixing the Chinese traditional food with other countries' type of food lead to a new outstanding taste I have never have before. Other than the food, it's a very quite place for a cup of tea or a glass of nice wine and chat with friends. One thing I have to add is that the waiters are extremely patient and heart warming, hart to find that in other Chinese' restaurant this day. Overall, it's a place i will love to come by again in my spare time in the near future.

Find this restaurant through tripadvisor and have a really good time here. We have tried tofu prawn and chicken wing. Strongly recommend tofu!

strongly recommend Tofu and cocktail here! Nice atmosphere and service. Have a really good time. will drag more friends to be here.
The food is brilliant, it is very innovating for the chief to combine traditional Chinese food with other country, the chicken wings are the mix of Mexican pepper and Chinese chicken. The pig in the blanket also uses mayonnaise sauces mixed with Chinese rice cake to compliment each other
The environment is a little distracting with the piper hing out.

Ruyi is one of the greatest modern restaurant ever , it could have become the best by increasing service experience. The environment is wonderful however need bit more lighting, well there are people who also enjoy this lighting :)

My friend recommended me RUIYI and I really had trouble finding it at first as it is located on a small land and had the smallest name board I ever seen. However, my food journey in RUIYI was really satisfying. The organic fried tofu with mayo is so tasty, crispy outside and soft, a bit of creamy texture inside. Also, the French fried wicked wings taste just perfect, with hint of salt and spicy and you can't have enough. Definitely worth trying !
Jessie
An amazing place with wonderful interior design. What suprise me first was the friendly staff in this place. Different from other general Chinese restaurant, you can see the owner paid a lot of idea in the interior design, its simple, modern and clean but with lots of Chinese elements in it. The food are served with nice tableware and taste very fresh, fried tofu with szechuan mayo and the duck tofu soup is what you must have! It is not like typical Chinese food, it is Chinese food with creative and modern features. I especially love the menu design that owner put the family photo on the back, you can feel the whole story of this place!

Tonight at Ruyi gave me a lot of surprises. Firstly, the interior design for this restaurant is marvelous. As a designer, I quite appreciate the decorations in here. Then it has nice serve there as well. The waiters are so friendly. We had Peking duck today which is my favourite. It is crispy and real juicy. The source is tasty. The only thing I think Ruyi should improve is the waiters' voice is too small. Sometimes I can't really get them.
Jenna Leong
RuYi is a great restaurant with modern decor that complements the unique and modern twist it takes on Chinese food.

The Peking duck cones were really tasty and plated beautifully and I especially loved fried green beans with crunchy garlic.

The staff were really friendly and welcoming and I enjoyed the experience.

Glad I found it ! I was so impressed by the attention to details that the restaurant had. The food is so delicate and delicious at the same time. The price is good as well. Love the fried tofu with mayo! I like the creamy texture that the tofu had and I was told it's organic tofu. The duck and tofu soup taste fresh and the favor is rich ~ I promised you won't be disappointed by this restaurant. Give it a wow

Great food and services, I really enjoyed both the looking and taste of the food. It also a very good place to talk to friends and workmates, try to bring ppl here and u will never be regret

The food is very delicious, especially the tofu and the shrimp. The tofu tastes crispy and is very soft inside, and is different from the tofu that you could buy in the Asian shop. The atmosphere is quite good, the waiters are very friendly and helpful. Although the price is not cheap, I will come again with my friend, and introduce it to my friend.

Don't bother if you're chinese.. Fairly average chinese food in a swedish coffee shop setting. Don't bother if you're used to eating good quality chinese food, which I expected for the price. Either cut the price down or put the quality up.

It's a great restaurant! The service is wonderful and the environment is good as well. Love the Tingling Prawn, there is a rich flavour, lovely combination of lemongrass, coriander and prawn.

Great Dinner. We have got such a pleasure night here. Great environment, very comfortable decoration and table sets are just fantastic with their food. Great environment and a different take to Chinese cuisine. The decor at the restaurant was relaxing and neat. Perfect for a date night or girls night out. The background music wasnt exactly my jam but was soothing for a relaxing dining environment. Service was excellent and attentive. Every dish was introduced. The 'Gui bao' had fusion element with a different sauce and surprised our taste buds. The shanghai dumpling was also juicy. Better to eat it while it's hot. My friend and I talked for too long and ate it cold : p definitely recommend this place.

Decisive Cravings
by Decisive Cravings I’ve never been a fan of Chinese food (actually technically that’s not true, one of my old friends is half-Chinese and his Mum always makes amazing dishes), my only Chinese restaurant experiences had been bowls of gluggy, MSG-filled, deep fried food. Before Ruyi . This place has completely changed my perspective. After hearing about the Hecker Guthrie fit-out and checking out their website I was keen to push my Chinese food judgement aside and give Ruyi a chance.
Jeffs.emma
The style of Ruyi is modern contemporary . The restaurant is very well manicured, and I felt like a royal throughout the whole experience – 5 star service! The space feels lights, with good use of timber, cool hanging lights over the table and a mixture of seating styles which give the room some texture. Large class windows look out onto the old cobble stone lane way which I absolutely love!
Jerryr673
Ruyi. A restaurant with excellent atmosphere. Staffs are well trained and food is not like traditional Chinese food, they are accommodate to modern preference. Definitely worthy to try.

P.S. amazing wine list

Loved the ingredients and taste!. This is our second time back at RuYi... We love the high quality ingredients that they use here, which is very different experience from many of the cheaper/oily eats in Chinatown. The crispy chicken with honey and wasabi sauce was a highlight. Love the fusion and creative menu. Will definitely come back again.

Peter of Kew. Just had a beautiful home plates style dinner. Especially liked the cumin pork and the morish eggplant chips. Great friendly and prompt service. This place deserves it's top 100 in Australia restaurant rating. The best take on modern Chinese bar none.

A place truly worth. It Is restaurant with true modern twist of old Chinese food. Eating there gave me and my friend a whole new view of Chinese food. But what impress us the most is the claiming and pleasant atmosphere . It is very detailed and down to the earth at the same time . Plus great wine list Certainly a good place for friends and business gathering.

Will return. Visited RuYi over the new year for lunch after reading about it.
Firstly, It was great to discover it open with many eating places closed without notice on their websites or doors!
Totally enjoyed the whole experience at RuYi. We indulged in an array of small plates - flavours were fresh & the combinations well paired. The service was efficient & friendly.

Immaculately design down to the smallest detail its a lovely, calm space. The perfect setting for Chinese food that defies the cliche. Everything is fresh and extraordinary. The dumplings are Wonton were some of the best I've had. And the hosts were warm and attentive. A splendid find that will see many happy returns.

Wonderful night out!. Had another amazing dinner at Ruyi. The food is fresh and flavoursome and the service is wonderful. It's affordable and the modern twist on Chinese food is very refreshing. Will definitely recommend to friends and family!

Great atmosphere and personal service. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We had a banquet which was chosen by chef's recommendations and the cuisine was fresh with well balanced. Service was excellent and this will be one to revisit and recommend.

Excellent Food, Excellent Service and Excellent Atmosphere. From the moment you enter it is cosy, welcoming and stylish. Service was great and staff are well versed in the food and wines. The food is definitely spectacular! Essentially it is a modern take on Chinese food. Will definitely come again!

Slow service and small portions. Only two visible staff members, slow service and small food portions for the price you are paying. Asked for pork ribs and they were cold and was looking forward to the fried rice which came out and was rice with fish row and some egg. Not impressed and would not return
Erin
Peking Duck Bao Bao. A steamed bun folded around slices of Peking duck, some herbs and a creamy sauce. One of my favourite restaurant dishes ever!
Grace Salemi Farchione
Amazing. We went to Ruyi last night, & from wS so impressed. We knew our night was going to be great from the minute they came to the door and opened it for us. They were so friendly. We decided to order a few little tapas plates & one main. We also ordered a few cocktails which was sensational. My fav cocktail was called the Ruyi! Now onto the food. Every single dish was amazing. The flavors, freshness & overall taste was brilliant. My favorite dish so far was the chilli dumplings. Everyone needs to go to Ruyi! You will not be disappinted!

Lovely fresh tastes and welcoming service. Refreshing calm about the space. Wonderful food. A must do. Highly recommended

Excellent dinner, had a last minute booking on a Monday night and couldn't have felt more accommodated. Shaun was a delight, not to mention his team. Do not go past the home made chilli wontons with THAT sauce... And the soft chilli crab is amazing!! Loved it.
Georgia
Great food and service!. The food was delicious and service was very attentive and accommodating! The prices are very reasonable. The gluten free offering is very impressive. I would definitely recommend Ruyi.
Kimmy Jo
My friends and I were recommended ruyi by our hotel. As a person diagnosed with coeliac disease I am glad we went there (we don't normally have many Chinese options). Ruyi catered to my needs and there were many options that I could have. The soft shell crab was excellent and I would recommend!!! They use gluten free batter so it was a real treat. We thought the prices were very reasonable considering you get top shelf service, atmosphere and very tasty meals. Great place for sharing meals. Will come back when I'm in Melbourne next.
Kristine Perdio
Out of the ordinary. Great tasting food, amazing fusion of flavours and excellent customer service! All the staff are very attentive and made the experience worthwhile! Great restaurant ambience, loved the whole decorum and overall look of the restaurant. We will definitely come back to this place again!
Laura Myer
Delicious food, trendy and modern setting, and lovely staff - such a treat! I will definitely be returning! Thank you to the ruyi crew - Laura M

Very good food from start to finish. There is a good flow with entree to main and just a good amount of dessert to finish. Must try modern chinese eatery. Reasonable price with the portion.

A little gem. Had a great time tonight at Ruyi in a very modern and stylish setting. We really enjoyed all the dishes though the peking duck cones were my fave as a perfect dish (x2!). The citrus pork and wagyu beef were a couple of other highlights in a well-balanced menu with a nice side dish of greens (always!). Also had the banana fritter with coconut ice cream, that's my little invention. Will definitely return soon!
Nicky
The service was excellent. The food was even better...And can't miss out on flaming cocktails!
Luojie_gx
Best Chinese restaurant there is in Melbourne!. I don't like to leave review for any businesses but the experience I had at Ruyi last night makes me feel I had to..... From the beautiful decor to the pure and fresh food and the attentive service. Everything is out of this world. It is a place for experience. I recommend this restaurant to all my friends and colleagues and will def. be back for more.
Eldoan
The best!. A menu full of delicious food. Perfect attention to detail! Don't skip dessert - the banana fritter with black sesame ice cream is amazing!
Facebook User
The most beautiful chinese restaurant in town!. The food is so unique, service is one of the best in Melbourne, warm and the pay attention to the details. Love it so much!
Can't wait to come back.
Come_in_burned
Wonderful modern chinese. Clean and delicious.. Fantastic food, including the vegetarian fare! I especially liked the sesame seed ice-cream, the eggplant and the Bannockburn wine selection! The service and general set-up were also very good.
Hilary McLeod
Service was outstanding and the food was an absolutely delicious modern take on some Chinese classics
HelloAFo
Delightful! From the fit out to the service to the food RuYi was great! Would recommend to anyone for a filling and delicious evening meal.
Wmargin
Great joint! Bloody spectacular!. Went there about a month ago and again with friends on Saturday and place was packed and vibe was pumping! Overall the whole package was all spot on! The food is modern, the service is what I call beautiful Chinese, and the vibe is both cool and warm... you must try it out to understand what i mean. This place should be busy as Chin Chin, but I guess they only new and waiting for people to find out. Coming back more for sure...
Ireneki
Yummy food and awesome service. I highly recommend the place, the food was yummy and they also do have an amazing wine and cocktail menue! i love the scandinavian interior design and the good sense for music! they know how to create an atmosphere for a lovely dinner! my favourite dish "oyster beef steak"!
Jenny
Tasty food, friendly service!! Definitely worth a visit!

Amazing food, perfect service. Nice and friendly atmosphere for a perfect dinner out with friends!

Wow I'm not sure what trumps here, the delightful wait staff, the gorgeous restaurant design or the absolutely scrumptious food! Ruyi is unique in its service of modern seasonal Chinese with excellent ingredients and a unique menu which makes Ruyi is an absolute delight to visit. I wholeheartedly recommend Ruyi and will be visiting again as soon as possible!
Erin B
Amazing food and spectacular service.. Didn't know what to order so the waitress suggested the best share plates to get and they were amazing! New cocktail menu which are all refreshing, had the lychee martini and it was yum! Best modern Chinese I've had in Melbourne! Hidden away in Liverpool street but a must visit!! Banana fritters are to die for too! Do yourself a favour and visit this place!
Sophie Letta
Beautiful experience, wonderful food and friendly staff. Ruyi Dumpling and Wine Bar was the perfect place to spend with my friends to celebrate a birthday. The food was absolutely wonderful, the service impeccable but not overly formal and it was a perfect night. I will be back!
Anna
Beautiful food, modern decore & amazing staff. Enjoyed a lovely night with friends in ruyi's chilled environment. All the food is amazing- in particular the soft shell crab! Definitely a restaurant to try out & return to!
Sally C
Must do. Absolutely beautiful food & very friendly staff. Highly recommend!
IM3142
Amazing little spot with incredible food & service. Loved our Ruyi experience! Great small dishes and delicious cocktails highlight this chic spot. From delicious handmade dumplings to novel Peking duck, amazing tofu and other "Chinese tapas" dishes we had a great time - thanks for the love Ruyi.
Ross
Great cocktails and service to match. Loved the dumplings and the Peking duck was awesome in both its flavour and presentation. Love it.
Ross Horsey
We came for the food(which was great) but they also have amazing cocktails! Men don't normally like tofu, but this place has the most amazing tofu we've ever tried. Every guy at our table loved it. Highly recommended!
Amelia Kingston
Seriously incredible service, nothing was too much to ask! The food was fantastic, delicate dumplings, oh and the light chilli green beans are to die for!
The cocktails were a surprise, my personal favourite was the Ginger Ginger but I was also impressed with the rolling flavour of the No.16.
We will definitely be back.

I first read about Ruyi in Vogue living and have been wanting to try it ever since. Finally I made it and was definitely more than impressed! This place made it into Vogue for it's incredible pared-back interior, which is well deserved. They have thought of every detail from gorgeous table settings with unique pottery pieces, mood lighting and Scandinavian design aesthetic. It also has a great atmosphere with music you can talk over and amazing service - two of us had dietary requirements and our lovely waitress worked everything out for us with no problems. And then there was the delicious food - it was light and fresh and not light any other Chinese food you've tasted before! My fave was the Whole Snapper and the Chilli Chicken Chips. Oh and don't forget the flaming cocktails and wine. Really an amazing dining experience made better by the welcoming staff.
Tom Richman
Had a fantastic meal, service was brilliant and the wine list was great as well. The Two Flavour Snapper was wonderfully presented and tasted delicious. Make sure you try the chili chicken chips as well. They catered incredibly well for specific dietary requirements, well thought out modern menu that didn't focus on one particular region and the staff were more than happy to answer all of our questions about the awesome earth ware crockery. Cocktails are top notch as well. Could not recommend more highly. Everything from atmosphere, service, food and drinks was spot on.
Grace Stewart
Delishes light, fresh and honest flavoured modern Chinese food! A beautiful small space decorated with delightful earthy ceramic table ware and Scandinavian inspired furnishings. I shared a number of dishes with 3 friends all of which were very flavoursome. The highlights were the chilli chicken chips, the pork and crab dumplings and the oyster beef. Will certainly be visiting again soon!
Ryan
Such a great little atmosphere! Had an awesome time, the food was amazing and the staff were very accommodating to our very particular requests!
Russell Chia
Excellent food and service. And a comfortable interior setting too. A must try.
Camillelescai
Fantastic food. Order the soft shell crab!
Stephanie Korolija
Best dumplings in Australia.. Ruyi has become one of my favorite restaurants in Melbourne, its stunning interior and its quality of food makes me come back over and over again. If you are like me a person that often enjoy eating out, and wants your food to be exceptional, then this is the place to try. I love their dumplings, but tonight I also tried their winter menu which had eggplant (share) and duck that had been cooked for 3 hours ( shared). It was, as always- spot on.
Somebodyfabulous
Dreadful. Terrible! WAY overpriced and slow service. I will never return here.

We waited over an hour for our food while tables next to us received their food.

Paid $15 for six vegetarian dumplings that were no better than any decent dumpling venue in Chinatown, where you get 15 for $12.

Do not bother going here; you can get the same food for a lot less elsewhere.

In reference to the reply below: It was not a group of six. It was a group of two. I think you have me confused with other diners - I haven't provided the date of dining, and it wasn't on 9 July, which appears to be the date you are referring to.
Yumi Lee
Yummy. Went here for dinner last night.
chilli wonton and flaming prawn are must try. the food is amazing. good service, delicious food. definitely come back!
Khover18
RuYi. This restaurant is total crap trying to pass off very basic underwhelming Chinese food. Dumplings were OK but smothered in the vinegar sauce, where there should have been just a dipping sauce, the deep fried fish was a nightmare old fashined battered fried fish in a sickly sweet 1960's sauce. Obviously for the diners who know no different. Will never go .
Meika83
Amazing food, incredible service. Definitely will return!
Josh
This is the second time we came to ruyi after we spent our valentines there. The staff are so friendly and they go out of their way to make your dinner a little extra special, and are happy to cater to your requests. The food is very very good, delicious options if you are vegetarian or pescaterian. We love it! Recommend to anyone after a nice, not to expensive night out.
Guy Jukes
Amazing food, great service the duck pancakes were to die for and the signature cocktail Ruyi is very refreshing

Great dinner. Lovely food and beautiful service- I'm already planning a trip back to this cute restaurant!!
Wholenezz
Worth the visit!. Went for dinner last night. Had the eggplant strips, duck & tofu soup, flame grill prawn, and the chili oil dumpling. My favorites were the eggplant strips and duck tofu soup. Staffs were really polite and friendly. Nice decor, very clean place, and great ambience. Great experience overall.
Jay
I had high expectations of Ruyi given my partner had eaten there before, and he loved it. Usually with high expectations you end up disappointed. Not in this case. The ambience was nice, staff attentive and friendly... And the food, simply amazing. I couldn't recommend this restaurant enough!
Lucy
Tasty meal with gluten free options!. I walked in this restaurant not know if they had any gluten free options but the owner was very helpful in providing me with lots of options. I ordered the chicken lettuce cup and eggplant strips and both were delicious. The food was well presented and tasty without being oily like a lot of other chinese dishes. The service was excellent and the staff there were very friendly and accommodating. I'm looking forward to going back and trying some of their other dishes.
Dcee
Finally, made my way here after reading on broadsheet many months ago, and still remember it, particularly the high design fit out, clean, sleek, modern, an eye candy, which also translates onto its food offering, clean, balance, not aggressively seasoned and vry different offering compared to a typical chinese establishment. This could be a new benchmark setting in the chinese dining scene? A gamechanger perhaps?
Nick Clarke
The food was really good. The wagyu beef was cooked to perfection and the truffle paste flavoursome. The banana fritter with black seasame ice cream was an old favourite with a twist and absolutely delicious. Great tasting wine. Really affordable. Speedy service. Friendly staff!
EbonyB
WINTER SOUPS WORTH A VISIT!!. Went to check out the new autumn/winter menu. Was excited to see soup now on the menu. We ordered one of each of the soups and the duck and tofu was a stand out! The serving size is perfect for a starter. Chilli chicken chips another great addition. As always staff were wonderful and the service first class.
Charlie The Eater
The service is most excellent! I love the food especially flaming prawns. I would definitely recommend this place!!
Emma_scott87
Some of the best steamed dumplings I've ever tasted!. These were some of the best steamed vego dumplings ive ever had!! The whole place is totally different to your usual chinese restaurant. REALLY COOL and SUPER DELICIOUS!
Brooke Clarke
Affordable Highly Quality Dining!. Was pleasantly surprised at the affordability with most expensive meal being around $28. The quality for the price is outstanding. Meals arrived quickly and everything was presented well. The ‘Big’ (main) meals were perfect for sharing amongst a few people and there was plenty of food. The citrus pork was a favourite amongst the group. Such a high standard of food and service at such an affordable price!! Would highly recommend.
Lee.cullen
HEAPS OF GLUTEN FREE AND VEGO OPTIONS. Ordered a heap of tapas to share. more than enough food arrived. service was friendly and fast. I was surprised at the number of veg & GF options available. the mayo on the fried tofu was amazing. very well priced A+
Tyler
Fine wining and dining. Was.... Fine wining and dining.
Was taken here by some work colleagues for lunch. The place has a modern, light air feel. Nothing like your usual chinese restaurant. The lunch menu was well priced and offered great selections. The wine list contained a great variety. Food arrived quickly and i was really impressed. Hoping to return for dinner soon!

It's the little things. I d.... It's the little things.
I dined here for the first time recently. As a left gander I have grown accustomed to moving my cutlery from the right side to the left. However minutes after doing this the waiter switched the cutlery back. I was amazed at how observant the staff were. The staff kept up the excellent service throughout the night , and the good really is something to rave about. The salt and pepper crab was cooked to perfection, the chilli chicken chips and meat lover bao bao also came highly recommended. The first impression is what really made my night, I will must certainly be returning!! Thanks ruyi!!
Andrew.scitech
Outstanding Staff and service. We were greeted at the door by staff and quickly shown to our table. Our waiter was very polite and friendly and gave great recommendations. The food came out quickly once ordered, and was too a very high standard. Did not find myself trying to get the waiters attention at all, as he checked on the table. Upon leaving we were escorted to the door. We all felt very welcome and well looked after dining at Ruyi. Will most definitely be returning.
SarahBella
New winter menu -yum! Fr.... New winter menu -yum!

Frequent diner at Ruyi. Recently released a new winter menu and this time they have really out done themselves. Not only have new additions been added but the overall costs have been lowered. Still the same great food but now even more affordable! New items to take note of include the eggplant strips and the Seafood and eggwhite soup.
Ashlee
AMAZING Looks amazing, serv.... AMAZING
Looks amazing, service is amazing, food is amazing. Sticky rice pudding is AMAZING.

Best Chinese I Have Had In Melbourne!. Great food - fresh and delicate and beautifully presented. Staff are kind, attentive and know their menu inside out. Decor and atmosphere along with the great food makes for a truly lovely dining experience. Highly recommend the chili dumplings and citron eggplant! I will be back.
Je8clarke
Went here with friends. Ordered a heap of smalls to share. The eggplant strips were amazing. I would also highly recommend the fried tofu! The food came out super quick after we ordered. There was plenty of food to share and all of it was delicious! Im a vegetarian but my friends all really enjoyed the pork and chive dumplings. Absolutely fantastic service!! We will be coming back here again and will recommend to others!

The first time I went to Ruyi I thought it was the best find in Melb for a while. Delicious fresh Chinese food with handmade dumplings. I came back 3 months later and feel like I'm at a different restaurant. The dumplings taste like they are from a packet, dry and old. The wagyu beef was underwhelming! ! The service was v slow which we didn't mind the first time as the food was sensational but this time just irritating. Also a few things we picked off the menu weren't available.. why??
Sadly I won't be returning:(
Marianne
My favourite Melbourne restaurant. Every time I eat at Ruyi it is the same. Great food, great service and great decor. My favourites remain the wagyu beef and the wonton. I cannot wait for the new menu. Love you guys.
Helena
Good restaurant. Come to Ruyi with my family. The foid is so different from all the other chinese restaurants light.clean.fresh...my mom said this is the best chinese food she ever had in her life. Will back soon
Colin.shane
Over priced, small serves, long waits, a number of dishes on the menu were not available, ontop of this the dishes lacked flavor! The wine list was not very extensive for a wine bar.
Disappointing!
Haily
Lovely food. Asian cuisine that tastes natural. I generally suffer from a sensitive stomach but this was very nice. A different take on modern Asian cuisine that should be tried!
Vanessa Fletcher
Our experience at Ruyi was truly special. We came here for a celebratory birthday dinner and the staff were exceptional. Food was of an incredibly high standard and we felt it was flawless. The owner Sheng was present, as was his wife and sister a very personable experience . We will be coming back for the wonton in chilli and the salt and pepper crab !
Tara Clancy
As you wish ..... It’s the fourth time I’ve been here since Ruyi opened, which I think speaks for itself. As a group of three we shared 3 lots of dumplings/wontons and it was more than enough, so they have great sized meals. The service is very attentive and they love to give you the story behind the theory of Ruyi (which means ‘as you wish’); a nice, personal touch.
Helena El-Najjar
A really unique Chinese restaurant, very different to the normal greasy food and red dragon décor. Clean and fresh food in a modern and comfy atmosphere. I'll be back!
Somanyanimals
I've eaten at Ruyi twice now and both times the food was delicious. My favourite "entree" style dishes are the duck pancakes and some sort of seafood/prawn cake (I can't remember what it was exactly). My favourite main so far is the citrus pork, which I think is Ruyi's interpretation on the Chinese classic sweet and sour pork. I'd definitely recommend giving Ruyi a try.
Hazel Kenyon
Expensive, small serving, long wait between dishes, tasteless! Hard to find a place this expensive and does such bad food!! Disappointed
Soph
Fresh and different. Coming from country vic, I’m used to chinese food thats out of a box and restaurants full of bamboo and waving cats. So it was a nice change to eat a Chinese place that’s new and vibrant, with fresh food and great wine. The citrus pork was amazing and cooked to perfection, and the “famous” chili wontons recommended by the host definitely lived up to their reputation. I’m not sure how I’ll go back to my local Chinese joint after experiencing this!
Sarah
No-one does Chinese like Ruyi. Fresh produce, contemporary design, tasty dishes, and a beautiful selection of wines!
Bonybonybony70
We went to Ruyi Saturday with my husband just because we were walking through the city and we noticed this discret restaurant in a hidden lane.. well such a good surprise! its amazing chinese food, really modern and different, the staff is attentive and nice. it was a wonderful dinner. We'll comeback for sure.
Marni.kate
Great food, great experience. If you're looking for a great night, and not just somewhere to eat, then I would definitely recommend Ruyi. The atmosphere was lovely, the service was informative and engaging, and most importantly, the food was delightful.
Amber Evans
Very impressed. Had the seafood spring rolls and wagyu beef and both were amazing. Very nice staff.
Isidora
Great place. The food was simple and fresh, and the service was warm and inviting. 10/10
Francesca Hickman
I had the lunch special which was only $18. Good food for a reasonable price.
Anj
It didn’t have your standard chinese menu, but what it did have was nice. Favourite dish of the night was the duck stir fry – highly recommend.
Glitterbug_240
Delicious Find!!. We found this place tucked away in a laneway while wandering the streets of the city and decided to go in because it looked like a really cool place... and we were pleasantly surprised by what we found inside. Chinese food with a difference! We had the pan-fried pork dumplings for entrée. The dough was al dente and the filling was tasty. And for main we had the berry prawns. The prawns were cooked well and the sauce was delicious.
Hm-5141
Great night out!. Good atmosphere, contemporary look, delicious food and friendly staff. Overall, a great night out with friends.
Carla De Ionno
Really impressed!. We dine out often and were really impressed by the food, staff and decor! A great new restaurant with delicious food! Found it on broadsheet and so glad we did!!
Jo
Fantastic menu. Staff are incredibly helpful and friendly!
Chris
Went for dinner last night - very nice decor, attentive staff, pity about the food. The "signature" dumplings, enthusiastically recommended by the waiter (how I hate that term) were good, but the chicken with mango and celery was weird and bland and the duck salad underwhelming. The nicest dish was the citrus pork (aka sweet and sour) Everything seemed under seasoned - fresh and seasonal doesn't have to be boring. For a place calling itself a wine bar there's not much variety in the wines by the glass and they aren't cheap. Won't bother going back...
Sophie
Visited Ruyi with a couple of girlfriends for dinner and loved it! The dumplings and the wontons were amazing, can't wait to go back. Had a great night!
Raunchpaunch
Gorgeous!. The food is well thought through and executed with finesse. It's Chinese with a retro moderne refinement to it. Service is attentive and the wine selections great! Will most certainly keep returning!
Greta Heywood
Already a Favorite. I was introduced to RuYi by a work colleague a fortnight ago. Tucked away in a quaint little lane way, I am glad that I was - I may not have ever found it otherwise. Last night I shared RuYi with someone else. It is the sort of place you cannot help but want to share.
On both occasions I have had the wontons with chilli - these are a favorite. I've tried a variety of things on the menu however, and am yet to be disappointed. You can certainly tell that the freshest and best produce have been used.
It's not just about the food at RuYi however. The decor is modern and crisp, and the staff are delightful. It is clear that delicious fresh food and good quality customer service are a passion of the team at RuYi. See you again soon!
BetterbeWTC
Did someone say pretentious.... Overall the food was great... The manager/waiter(?) described the vegetarian dumplings like " a garden in your mouth" ... However he didn't mention that it came with a stone! I expect an apology for that. Not "let me check with the kitchen" ??? Seriously.
Has potential if management is prepared to listen and be responsive to customers.
Sunlou91
Amazing!!!. Upon arrival i was told about the concept of Ruyi "Chinese".As a chinese person iam very picky about Chinese food.I have found Chinese food in melbourne is often very greasy. We were introduce to Sheng Feng and His wife (owners).who has so much passion for this restaurant. With each dishes that were served up. Sheng explain where the products is source.hence why is was so fresh. My favourite dish was the wonton is chilli oil!!and lets not forget the Decor, bright and clean..
I would highly recommended this restaurant!!!
thanks for the wonderful night!!
Simon White
Little Gem. OMG. If you live in Melbourne, try here. If your visiting, try here. In fact come to Ruyi then see the rest of Melbourne.

Yes the service needs a polish and yes the space between meals might not be as fast paced as other places in town but thats what makes it different - Your not rushed. The food is fresh and flavoursome.

Just give it a go.
Foodies
Ruyi - over promised, under delivered. Extremely slow for food to arrive and the vegetarian options were over priced.
Nothappyjan
Over promised, under delivered. Arrived at 12.30pm for group lunch and left at 1.50pm to get back to work having only received a glass of water. Owner raved about the food all being made to order but lunch in the city that takes over 90 mins for any food to arrive???
Smith
Was one of my favourite restaurant, however after today, the worse service, I have changed my mind totally.

If I was the manager, I would:
1) offer the standard seat instead of the bar chair and then let the customers know there may be the possibility to move
2) offer the standard seat when there are still many seats available if noticing there are still some dishes coming up for the customers

The food is always wonderful, however the manager obviously has no feel for the customers but very arrogant.

Next Asian Restaurant to go...sure to impress. If you go out a bit like us, if you are a bit of a foodie like us, you will understand that this asian restaurant will be the new place to be in town; it is got everything it takes to be the one, great food, ambience , service and the real authentic beautiful taste of good food. The dumplings and the wontons are homemade and they are so delicious and delicate , with a sweet and sour combination of flavors , the main courses cook to perfection , light and flavoursome and you could tell that every dish was cook fresh to order . i normally ask myself what does it takes to a restaurant to be successful and busy...what is it that what makes the difference between the busy place and the other ......the main thing is certainly the food and the way Ruyi does it is great you won't be never disappointed with freshness and caring food cooked with passion, also the ambience does a lot and of course here in CBD contest you will be transported to a modern concept of a asian restaurant nice a warm with a modern twist, the service is very attentive and the waiting staff always ready to give an explanation o a suggestion to try a new dish , the wine list is well constructed to match asian food with a lot of labels from Europe and a few boutique wine from Australia . We would like to keep the secret about this gem in town since we discovered last week but in a couple of months time will be very well known!!!!
Sarah Melnyk
How long do you have?. Went here for a farewell lunch for a work colleague... Actually I'm still here..over an hour has passed and they have only now put our order through. We were made to move tables, pay $70 for a wine that's 15 in the shops, listen to a 16 minute introduction about their menue. The best tasting dumplings in the world won't make up for the awkward service, uncomfortable management and over priced menue. If only the service was as nice as the decore.
Biddy
The service here is terrible. It took them 50 minutes to take orders for a group at lunch time because they took ages to explain the menu in detail, even though we said we were in a hurry. Refused to do a la carte. Awkward and rude. Wine way overpriced. We still haven't got our food an hour in and have to get back to the office.
Veda
From strength to strength. I've dined here a couple of times now & every time it gets better. I really believe that this little restaurant has a big future ahead of it & am excitingly awaiting their new menu...
Jason Kwan
I had very high expectations coming to RUYI and honestly they met them completely. Walking in we are overwhelmed by the simple and clean layout. It feels like you have walked into an interior design magazine, almost a spiritual retreat from the city. The good was delicious but I must say I was already a fan even before my meal arrived. Overall RUYI is by far the best example of modern Chinese restaurant in Melbourne. Service was great, decor was stunning and original. Food was simple but felt exciting and new at the same time. Worth every penny! ( if we used pennies ;-)
Juan Ariga
After peeking in the window admiring the fit out and wares, I had optimism and high hopes. I was very disappointed. They need to relax their service, It was very nervous, unconfident and I felt like I couldn't relax as beautiful as the place looks. The dumplings are overpriced for what they deliver. I couldn't help but think I've had much much better taste and texture at yum cha mornings in little Bourke, for literally a third of the price. The duck and vegetable stir fry was fragrant and original and the highlight and gained them back some points. Music was uptight and the vibe was not there. I felt uncomfortable above all and we left as soon as we finished our food to go to a more relaxed bar and shake it off after paying the bill
Dianeyounglee
Great food and exceptional service. I was so impressed with Ruyi's extraordinary food and exceptionally professional services. Of course its interior design was really stunning.

I had a set lunch menu and it was delicious. I was with my two little children and they really enjoyed every dishes in that menu. Dumplings were succulent and extraordinary (unlike that lardful of ordinary dumplings you can see everywhere around China town). Beef with wasabi sauce was one of our favorites. We ordered the banana fritter as a dessert and it was sensational.

Beauty of Ruyi is to serve the new style of Chinese dishes catering for both old and young Chinese food lovers. Good for both family dinner and work functions. Wish you all the best and hope you become one of the best eateries in Melbourne.
Jade Lee Campbell
Not just dumplings!!. When you think Chinese you normally think 70’s interior, bad lighting, fish tanks, Lazy Susans & chairs that you once had in high school, but when you walk into Ruyi you are confronted with soft colours, clean lines, wood and smiling staff.

Already I was happy to be here.
We were shown to my table with my partner and right away you know you are on to a good thing when you have a wine list in front of you, we were offered water as we sat.
I love to know what I am eating before I choose my wine so our lovely waiter went off and grab us some menus.
As the waiter explained how the menu is designed for sharing; she asked if anyone on the table had allergies.
Now I am a foodtard (have allergies) so having a venue that understands that this is a common thing is refreshing.

The menu look so good it was very hard to choose what to eat... Dumplings, soft shell crab, scallops, whole snapper, wagyu - so much to choose from.

We started with dumplings; crab & pork dumplings, vegetarian dumplings & the wonton dumplings in chilli sauce.
They were perfect. A thin skin which you could see the filling through.
The dumplings are made fresh to order. You can see the chef making them behind the bar.

They have a well balanced wine list which has European wines, Australian & New Zealand. There is plenty by the glass is you want as well.

Next we had soft shell crab, peking duck cone & scallops and again amazing the flavors were well balanced, good texture booked beautiful.

For mains we had the whole snapper two ways which is a piece of art amazing it’s a MUST have!! But don’t forget the truffled +9 wagyu oyster blade served with mushrooms & asparagus. Mmm my mouth is watering thing about it..

But it didn’t stop there even though I could not fit in dessert I just could say no to banana fritters, my partner had the chocolate spring rolls with coconut ice cream. Lets just say he didn’t give me any!!

I am looking forward t my next visit they informed me that they have an express menu too

A fresh take on Chinese cuisine. Went here after we read a timeout review. Great to see a new fresh take on chinese food amongst all of the dumpling houses and more traditional (and somewhat greasy) chinese restaurants in Chinatown. Despite what other reviewers say, we experienced great customer service with Sheng taking us in detail through the whole menu. The freshness and same day produce really shows, not only upon consumption, but also hours later when you are not struggling with that heavy feeling in your stomach. It's good to see the 'status quo' finally being challenged in regards to Chinese cuisine in Melbourne. Will definitely be heading back with friends. Recommendations:

The chili sauce dumplings and the soft shell crabs.

Lovely lunch. I had lunch this week at Ruyi after stumbling on the place and liking the look of the decor, so through it was worth a try. Had the $35 lunch special, with five dishes. The highlight was the beef with wasabi. Everything was beautifully presented, each dish was distinctive, and the quality high.

My next trip will probably be for the tapas-style wine bar after work, to share a couple of glasses of wine and enjoy some dumplings or the like.

And sometime later, dinner.

Anyway, strongly recommended: elegant, modern Swedish decor, tasty food, quality service.

Rod Maddock

I'm sad for them. So close, yet so far. It looks great with its fresh Danish influenced fitout. The menu looks great and much of the food is very good... But, awkward inexperienced service makes it an uncomfortable experience. The pricing borders on arrogant, representing poor value. I hope they can save it

Nice fitout does not a restaurant make. staff need to be less nervous, gesture without touching the food, and know their food ingredients better. Underwhelming food where better dumplings and mains can be had at cheaper prices at many establishments across town. Also, no Chinese tea selection and no chopsticks??? Looks like outmoded 70s mindset hoping to trick some white guys.

The wine list here is only topped by the amazing service, with a personal touch by the owners who are clearly passionate about their beautiful restaurant. The food is redefined in its flavours and a true delight. We will definitely be back!

Very satisfying dining experience. RUYI was the type of place that seemed to have considered every detail. everything down to the cups and light fittings felt like a work of art. I had a dish of colorful Chinese vegetables, simple but immensely flavorful. The manager came and had a chat with our table to make sure we were all enjoying ourselves, he told us a little about his background and his philosophy for the restaurant, it was a nice touch. all in all it was a very satisfying dining experience.

Try it now!!!. A refreshing take on Chinese cuisine. Love it!! Absolutely beautiful venue with great wine list and friendly staff. Definitely worth trying. A great addition to the Melbourne dining scene!

I felt exciting at the first time when I saw it on the paper with extensive chef's profile. Went there and in love with the atmosphere BUT service needs to improved, food was very very ordinary and can be found in every corners in china town. I am absolutely disappointed.... by the end of the meal. Good luck

#ilovedumplings. Yummy dumplings and great starters. Lovely light ambience to the place, gorgeous ceramic plates and glasses. Service was polite and efficient.
If I had to critique anything, I think the wine and ciders were too pricey.

AMAZING, delightful and unique food, modern and clean decor and flawless service! Melbourne should be proud.

Our third time here in just over a week. Each time we have found out more and more about this enlightening showcase of Chinese food that I have really never experienced outside of Asia.

The wine is amazing, the decor and design elements are award worthy and the warmth of the staff and the owners (friendly owners are becoming a rarity in Melbourne) make the whole experience truly exceptional.

If you want ground breaking fine cuisine in a relaxed yet intelligent environment then you need to come down here ASAP!!!

Fabulous food, delightful French waiter, food was really great & loved the feel of the place with gorgeous earthen ware & stylish interiors. Great addition to CBD. Move over Ginger Boy.

Great set up, decor and warm ambience. All our dishes came out at the same time so we sent back our main.

Steamed wontons in chilli sauce and fried pork and chive dumplings were delicious. Disappointed with the wasabi beef which was so chewy and bland. Service needs more work on. Waited to order another drink, dessert and our bill

Nice service and ambience but the food was definitely overpriced and not even that fantastic. You can walk towards Chinatown to a place that does dumplings a lot better and for more than half the price.

Great dumplings very very rude & incompetent service
Jem
Very nice decor. Food was beautiful- star dishes were the pork and chive dumplings and the duck stir fry. I wouldn't bother with the wasabi beef again though. Staff tried hard and were lovely and service was efficient but they seemed inexperience; understandable with a new restaurant. For a "wine bar" the selections of wine by the glass was very limited, and wines were definitely overpriced. I would go back for the food, as it was delicate and flavoursome and definitely worth the visit.

The service is appalling. The food is ok.
The staff are lovely this however doesn't make up for the comical disaster of the night. The owner offered our table free deserts but then announced he couldn't take the order. Shortly after another waiter communicated it was one desert to share across a table of 5???
The menu wasn't explained and is very hard to navigate.
The entree's and mains were confused hence landing at the table 20 mins apart (one by one) not kidding!
I will never recommend this place. They cleared the table after 1.5 hours and still have saved the complimentary desert separately one after the other!!!

Beautiful, light and airy interior with tasteful crockery to match.
Attentive staff and the food arrived 10 minutes within ordering (this was at 6:30pm).
Unfortunately the food wasn't of a standard befitting the price bracket.
If price is of no concern to you, then this place is perfect

On entry was greeted with loverly smiley faces and asked where we wanted to sit, they then offered us the window seat saying it was the best seat in the house, wow i thought this is nice,
only to be served by a gentle man who forgot our order could not pour the wine and when we were looking lost and staring at the staff eagerly waiting for our meal after and 45 minutes i asked where it was, waiter 2 made an enquiry and came back 8 minutes later saying that the it was not ordered and asked are we sure we ordered (stupid question?!) we ended up eating a few entrees and guess what to make it even worse then waiting for the meals which were scabby neuveu small as freaking hell, so if you like waiting for ages only getting half of your meal and like a portion smaller then your toe nails you've hit the jack pot oh and when the head waiter tries to apologise and offer you his card guess what even funnier no cards in his fancy little card container, no glass of wine on the house for waiting or no nothing, if you like dumplings go somewhere else, or just eat over the road, sorry guys poor form, and scabby neuveu

food fair
service poor
prices really poor

think that sums it up, oh maybe i should be so hard was first friday night open and maybe the meals will get bigger and taste better and maybe what you order might even come hell maybe anything is possible

tastylad

Completely a let down, saw this restaurant on Broadsheet and decided to give it a try. The whole experience was just bad, first of all the wait staff confused us with the menu and we had difficulties understand how the lunch menu works. The food were surprisingly plain and old-fashioned. I mean look at the price! $32 for a dish of small cheap prawns deep-fried and glazed with strawberry sauce????

It's certainly not different from other Chinese restaurants except with a better decors and atmosphere. I'm serious the food here are clearly overpriced compare to the efforts and techniques that you put into it. I hope you don't mind me being honest : (

Wishes do come true. There is nothing like this - from the beautiful decor to the creative and modern Chinese cuisine to the wonderful wait staff and gorgeous owners - this is an experience like no other. I love the wonton with chilli sauce, the pork dumplings, the wasabi beef, the peking duck cones, the scallops with mango. This is a place where i can come over and over and my wish will come true every time.
Steak Me Out
When we sat down we were shown menus. They were simple and elegant in design, and filled with contemporary spins on Asian classics. After being handed the menus and deciding on what to order it took almost 30 minutes to get an order to the waiter. I ordered the pork and crab XLB (Xiao long bao), the wontons in chilli oil, the deep fried soft shell crab, scallops with golden rice and the wagyu beef with truffle paste.

Perhaps it was our choices or maybe it was first week jitters but Ruyi underwhelmed us. For the price we paid I would have liked a bit more punch in my chilli sauce and prawn in my lettuce cup. Overall the dumplings were the highlight and I would like to try the simpler steamed prawn or pan-fried pork and chive dumplings if I return – as long as there are chop sticks to eat them with!
De-brief Me
Last week, my husband took me out for lunch to Ruyi in the city – an Asian restaurant with a modern fit out. Ruyi translates literally as ‘as you wish’ and on that sunny day in Melbourne, it was exactly what I had wished for.. The service was exceptional, the ambience so warm and inviting, the food beautifully presented, and although a bit pricey, we would definitely consider revisiting Ruyi to try their other dishes.
50 First Dates Melbourne
Ruyi is not dark and loud like Longrain, it’s more of a sophisticated Chinese restaurant. Not white linen tables cloths kind of sophisticated, more like a beautiful fit out with care taken on almost every part of the design, right down to the ceramic bowls. Ruyi is your modern dumpling restaurant and you will taste the difference in their xiao long bao (I like to call them dumpling water bombs). Everything about this place is smooth and they do it all without trying to be cool. So if you find yourself out in the cold of Longrain just walk 10 meters down Liverpool Street and you’ll find a perfect Plan B. But be quick as this place will soon be everyone’s Plan A.

Menu: P & I decided to check out Ruyi for lunch on a Friday as I had heard a lot of good things about the place. Ruyi which translates to – “as you wish” is a spiritual object or talisman which symbolises good fortune – and is owned by Sheng Fang in collaboration with this wife Qian Qian Luo-Fang. Ruyi serves modern Chinese cuisine but looking in from the outside, as well as once you are well inside – you wouldn’t think this is your typical Chinese restaurant. There is no sight of the typical bright red and yellow colours, coupled with strong, thick wooden furniture. Instead you are greeted with the cooling green and light wooden tones. The fit out was carried out by Paul Hecker of Hecker Guthrie with most fittings and stylings sourced from around the world. The lights are wooden ash colored handmade lights from France, with the wooden chairs and stools imported from Milan. All the plates, bowls, water glasses and pitchers are made exclusively for Ruyi from local ceramic artist Andrei
Spoonfuls Of Wanderlust
This is a photoview post (contains mostly photos only). The good? Gorgeous space that is light, modern and understated but comfortable. Ruyi also boasts an impressive and ambituous ethos. Everything was cooked well. The bad? It may have just come down to what we ordered, but some dishes were a little expensive, and while everything tasted fine, we couldn't really find any standouts or starring points to warrant the price. My dining partner and I both agreed that if dishes are to be "re-invented", then the overall quality and flavour should be equal to, or improve on, the existing dishes. Would we go back? Maybe. There's nothing to really fault, so a good place for a business lunch perhaps, or if you're looking for something a little more comfortable than the typical Chinese restaurant.

Ruyi – Melbourne’s newest dumpling restaurant. Upon stepping in the restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised by the nice air-conditioned restaurant and aesthetically pleasing interior. The interior is designed by Melbourne firm Hecker Guthrie (David’s, Claremont Tonic, Sensory Lab, Bistro Guillaume etc) – I love how they incorporated simple earthen colours, terracotta pot lighting, simple potted plants, and earthenwares for a very complete simple and organic feel. We started off the evening with a drink each.

Those used to paying $8 for a plate of 15 dumplings should stop reading now. Ruyi is about quality, not quantity, which is apparent as soon as you step inside. The restaurant looks more Scandinavian furniture store than Chinese restaurant with its Hecker Gutherie-designed interior: white tiles, muted green finishes, blond wood chairs imported from Italy, handmade lights from France and custom ceramic crockery made by a local artist. When we visited for lunch mid-week there was no one else around to appreciate the décor. Given the empty tables it was surprising food took so long to arrive. The genuine and chatty husband-wife owners pushed service scores back
FoodieAboutTown
It’s probably not a great sign when everywhere else in Melbourne CBD is rammed and we walk up to the windows of Ruyi and there is one lonely pair in the restaurant. It definitely doesn’t look Chinese, no waving cats or gold decorations – it actually looks more Swedish and very modern. The menu is extensive with a fabulous choice of dumplings, small dishes and bites all to be shared. The manager spends a bit too long telling us about the ethos behind the restaurant and the seasonality of the food etc and when done we are ready to order and enjoy. The pan fried pork and chive dumplings look beautiful, sadly the dough is still raw so not so good but the filling was lovely. The seafood spring rolls, turn up on mass, there were up posed to be three per serve so two serves is perfect for the six of us. Never had calamari spring rolls before, they were nice enough. The Peking duck cone, is a lovely Peking duck pancake but my duck was overlooked and chewy, even worse my friend found a huge pie

Upon first glance, you might be forgiven that you've stepped into the wrong restaurant. Dumplings and scandinavian aesthetic don't usually go together, but at Ruyi, the name translating literally to 'as you wish', the two make pretty good company together.

Given all the seemingly positive social media hype surrounding Ruyi, we were disappointed with our meal. The owner’s attitude went a long way in diminishing our experience but the mediocre food at not-so-cheap prices didn’t help Ruyi’s cause either. It’s a beautiful restaurant (probably one of the prettiest I’ve been in for a while) but what’s the point when the food and service isn’t up to scratch?
MEL: HOT OR NOT
At first glance Ruyi looks and sounds like a Japanese restaurant. Its laneway windows display blond wood furniture, handmade ash and concrete light fittings (from France), white tiling and small gold details. The Japanese-style aesthetic continues with the custom handmade crockery by Melbourne ceramic artist Andrei Davidoff. But this cool, serene laneway restaurant is actually a modern Chinese restaurant. It serves mostly Cantonese favourites, with some Sichuan and Shanghai dishes thrown into the mix. We visited on a weekday lunch when it was fairly empty. A shame because their set lunch menu of $18 is great value and you’ll definitely come out full. Not to mention soothed by the quiet and subtle interior and the friendly service. The two of us shared one $18 set menu and one $35 set menu, which included some overlapping dishes. First up was the soup of the day fragrant duck and tofu broth, with tangles of eggwhite swirled throughout. It was warming and hearty without being heavy and
