Review Grill Steak Seafood - Melbourne

Darren Langman
I can’t speak highly enough of this restaurant, our recent dining experience was amazing. The staff are fantastic, we were well looked after and the quality of the meals were excellent 👍🏻 the meals were cooked to perfection. The meat fell off the pork ribs and the rib eye was like cutting through butter absolutely mouth watering. A fantastic dining experience overall and recommend trying this establishment when in the CBD. 👍🏻👍🏻

Owner was kind and food was not bad but it came out super late... waited more than 1hours half ... later we found out that the guy staff didn't place the order.

Went here with the family on a quick google search and all of us enjoyed the food. We ordered steaks, kangaroo and oysters, all of which were cooked properly and in a timely manner. I’m not much of an oysters fan, but for me to be able to enjoy it, it meant that it didn’t have that terribly fishy smell that poorly cooked oysters usually have. The older gentleman was also a good waiter and wasn’t annoying like some waiters are, demonstrating his experience in the field. Highly recommend!

Booked this place as a spare of the moment thing, was quite happy with the meal, a little over priced though to charge $5.50 for a side salad that you would normally recieve with any steak dinner was a little rich for what you got. All in all service was a little pushy with the owner ( we think) hovering and pestering us till we finally gave him our order. But i think the atmosphere is what will bring us back.

Friendly staff. Newly renovated looks great. Could of been quicker service out of the kitchen, steak was well done when medium was requested. Food was lovely for the most part. Some music outdoors for ambience would of made it more special. All In all a lovely meal.

Customer service was great, however our dining experience was not the best. We waited about 50 minutes for 2 prawns and 6 fresh oysters and this was just the entree. The entree didn’t need to take so long as oysters don’t require cooking and the prawns, there were only two of them? The oysters were not bad, however the prawns were over cooked, rubbery and over priced. $19.50 for two overcooked prawns. We didn’t want to complain as we were too hungry after waiting almost an hour. Our mains arrived shortly after we got the ribs and a porterhouse. The steak I ordered was unfortunately cold and the garlic butter I had with it didn’t even taste like it had garlic in it. Server was kind enough to get my steak redone and it did come out warm this time. The ribs weren’t too bad, however, there was a lot more sauce than meat. The chips were really good and unfortunately the only thing that satisfied me. Not the best dining experience. I do hope the restaurant hire more staff and get the quality of their food up to a better standard. Wishing them all the best in the process, there’s definitely potential.

Reasonable pricing, good food. I had the oysters, scallops, and kangaroo, and they were all delicious! Seafood was fresh. We were celebrating a friend's birthday, and the staff went out of their way to provide a serving plate, knife, and lighter for the cake we brought. All in all, a very good experience.

Most amazing service & food here! First time being to Melbourne and can guarantee I will be back just to visit this place again

We booked a table here at the last minute and were treated fantasically by the lovely Kosta. All of the staff were very friendly and service was very efficient. Most importantly the food was absolutely amazing. The Mussels, Garlic Prawns, Scallops and Oysters Kilpatrick were nothing short of delicious but the star of the meal was the Beef Cheeks, they fell apart like butter and tasted incredible. We highly recommend this place and we will be back, as there wasn't a thing on the menu that we wouldn't have ordered.

We had a lovely meal at Grill Steak Seafood tonight. We loved our waiter Kosta, he was very attentive and we got great service. I lobed the veal scallopini which was done with orange and pomegranate and roast potatoes. Husband had the steak with mushroom sauce. The Tiramisu was completely gorgeous and melt in your mouth. Definitely recommend

We had the surf and turf platter and it didn’t disappoint. All elements were cooked to perfection and the wait staff were very friendly and attentive. We chose to sit outside where we listened to live music (Amy Pollock) in the laneway. A perfect evening all around!

Over rated and over priced. We ordered the meat platter for two and the chicken and steak were over cooked and dry. My friend ordered the veal scallopini which was extremely salty. The service was good but that wouldn't entice me to go back.

Got served by Kosta. What a lovely, happy server. Great attention to detail and makes some great suggestions on food and wine choices. Thank you Kosta. What a great time. Good food, good company and most important good service. Come here if you want to have a great overall experience.

Could not be happier with the food or the service from Kosta. The kangaroo was the best cooked that I've ever had and so tasty. If I had to rate it out of 10 it would be a 20.

Great customer service, friendly staff, helpful in making suggestions. Great location and delicious food (the best eye fillet I've ever eaten and gnocchi cooked to perfection). It's for anyone who wants a fine dining experience.

Just had the most yummiest dinner, great service, would recommend a visit !

My daughter and I stumbled across this beautiful little restaurant , the staff were lovely very welcoming and friendly and the meal was amazing. We are country girls and look for nice restaurant to eat at when in Melbourne and this one ddnt let us down ......will be back

Empty table for 4. We were turned away because there was only 2 of us. Rude waiter just shook his head at us. So we’re dining opposite and 5 mins later they sit 2 people at a different table for 4. We come to this lane to eat often and this restaurant is usually begging us to dine as we walk past to our favourite place up the street. I know what our response will be next time...

Best meal by far so far in Melbourne. Great service, ambiance and the beef cheeks were to die for. Just right for Melbourne's weather.

We have enjoyed Christmas Lunches & Dinners as well as New Years Eve dinners! Beautiful food fantastic atmosphere and sensational staff Special thanks to Kostas who took such care of us

Burger was dry couldn't find the caramelized onions and the chips will cold and soft

Firstly the location is just fantastic. The live music on the lane watching the world past by way lovely. The scallops were perfect and the hot/cold seafood platter was good. Great chips and calamari. Good salmon and fresh oysters. A lovely seafood platter with a really fabulous aioli.

I would give this a higher rating, but the host wrangling people into the restaurant had been a complete tool to me on a previous night when I didn’t want to eat there. When I decided I wanted to eat at this place and realized it was the same place I almost went somewhere else. But, in the end, the food was good and satisfying. My wife had a delicious linguine carbonara and I took down the lamb shanks, which were very moist and fell off the bone.

Hardware lane is Melbournes bustling lane and theres heaps of vendors trying to get you into their restaurant. We got sucked in here but enjoyed the atmosphere and pasta!

The service was exceptional and friendly. Lovely atmosphere in this laneway restaurant!!! 💖

Good food & great service. We were a big group and we very much enjoyed the mushroom sauce & the steak. Will come back to try their other dishes!

Amazing lunch menu with absolutely delicious food. To top with that friendly staff and great ambience on Hardware Lane. Tough to beat this place.
I gried grilled Barramundi, which to my absolute delight came with Mussels & Pipi-Clams as well and was very delicious. I also loved their Bruchetta, had great flavours though wish the salad (rockets) were a bit more fresh.

Wonderful vibe with friendly staff at this restaurant in Hardware Lane. Has indoor and outdoor seating but outside is better even in winter as there are heaters above to keep you warm.

We ordered just some wine with bites - the crumbed olives, trio of dips and garlic prawns were absolutely delicious!

Great place to enjoy a meal and soak up the atmosphere!

It was my second visit after a great experience the first time however I was a bit disappointed this time round. I ordered a scotch fillet medium rare with mushroom sauce. The steak was quite tough and difficult to chew. The chips are delicious though! Very light and crisp and great with the creamy mushroom sauce. The creme brûlée was a bit grainy and strong in egg.
Vivi Susanti
Had a linguine and it was okay. Enjoyed the place more than the food honestly.. along the lane has great music played. People would enjoy seating outside just to enjoy the vibe!
Josh D
Outstanding. I have no idea why other reviews are low. Service was great, food was fabulous, service was excellent and overall experience was terrific.

Didn't take enough pics of the food.

Wonderful restaurant along Hardware Lane. We sat outside enjoying the cool breeze with heaters above us, the temperature was perfect as we chatted with wine and bites.

I had the grilled barramundi while my colleagues ordered the roast pork belly and pasta, all tasted great; I really enjoyed my fish.

Friendly helpful staff drew us to eat at Grill Steak Seafood, variety of food on the menu and cocktails, went with beef salad and apple martini 🍸

Just needed something easy and tasty for a dinner by myself. Friendly service accompanied with a perfectly grilled kangaroo with some potatoes, veggies and sauce. And not to forget a glass of good Australian red wine. Highly recommendable

This is probably the worst restaurant I have ever been. Including all the places I have travelled across the world. I just stepped out of this restaurant and if there was a minus rating I would have definitely given it. I was there with my wife,we ordered Lemon Lime bitters and one mocktail called Miami with our grub. We waited for 25 mins for our drinks and when we reminded one of the server he tells us, there was a table which ordered 14 drinks and it was the reason your drinks were holding up. I would like to ask ,how can other tables around us can get it and we couldn’t get our drinks. Sometimes ,it is good to accept your mistakes and stop giving excuses. I am quite certain our server forgot to punch our order in the system. Definitely wouldn’t recommend anyone to go there. This all happen when we were just looking at the menu and a gentleman walked up to us and talked us to the restaurant. My suggestion to the restaurant if you want to attract patrons then better pull up your socks.
Madam Cranky Pants
Beef cheeks were devine. Deep fried olives and trio of dips decent service staff were very accomodating which you would expect with all the competition around.

I’m quite surprised with the rating of this restaurant on Zomato cos I had a really lovely experience here. Me and my friends were wandering around Hardware Lane and decided to give this restaurant a shot since we already tried Max. The staffs were very friendly and funny joking with you around. The food was amazing and price-wise. We ordered pork ribs, calamari rings, mussels and fresh bread. The pork ribs was so tender, you can even chew the tendons. Calamari rings and mussels were decent. I love the fresh bread, so crunchy and buttery. Ask for olive oil and dip their fresh bread in, heaven!!!
62.5$ for 2 people. Affordable for a decent Italian restaurant on Hardware Ln. Definitely coming back again :)

I was a bit skeptical before going there due to the awful reviews that this place collected but despite a few shortcomings, I had a positive experience. First off, the owner of the place offered us a 15% discount to entice us to go there and that made a big difference as the prices are not exactly low (though not bad compared to some other restaurants on Hardware Lane). He gave us what arguably is the best outdoor table in the house (right in front of the live band). The staff were fantastic; efficient, friendly and helpful. It's a big place with a lot of tables both indoors and outdoors but the staff are on the ball! We ordered the mixed meat platter, the seared crocodile which was a special entree and the kangaroo. Our favourite was hands down the kangaroo. I had kangaroo numerous times before but this was probably my favourite. It was tender, cooked to perfection and full of flavours. The seared crocodile was nice if you like crocodile but I felt it lacked flavours although the sauce it came with was on the sweet side and exquisite. Now the mixed platter. I liked the chorizo and the ribs. The ribs were falling off the bone and marinated well. The chicken, although not rubbery, was dry and tasteless. The steak was okay; not bad but not great. I would say it was cooked more medium than medium rare and now that I think of it, they asked us which sauce we wanted but we never got the mushroom sauce we requested. The lamb chops which you can't see in the picture were just disgusting. They tasted like they were undercooked, chewy and there was a lot of fat on them. In fact, I was left with not a lot of meat after I removed the fat. Saying that, I would say the mixed platter is value for money ($99 if I remember correctly) and the kangaroo is also worth it at $31. Of course, the discount sweetened the deal even more.

It's really a shame that restaurant like this is still striving in a city famous for its culinary culture. Waited 30+mins for a pork rib and seafood paella which were the worst I have ever had. For the quality of the food their price is ridiculous. I suspect this entire street is a tourist scam. They are not even showing their name anywhere but on the bill. Also the name of this establishment itself flashes red light, no self-respect restaurant would just call themselves what they make, it’s not a take out place. Avert this side of Hardware Lane if you can.

I’ve been here twice now, staff were friendly and very helpful those days, the foods were average I was a bit disappoint, overpriced for the quality of food, but fortunately I got the good seating while quite busy time.

We had an early 6pm dinner here. Great service and food especially the calamari, seafood spaghetti, sticky date pudding and bread & butter pudding with ice cream! Nice chai and sweet port too!
Dumba
Busy place that has an extensive menu. The servings are a decent size and the pasta is well cooked. The spruikers can be a bit aggressive, but the waiting staff are friendly and polite.

Had a great time here last night! Exceptional service with amazing tasting food! One of the best mussels and garlic prawns I’ve ever had. Would definitely recommend this exclusive restaurant and a massive BONUS with certified halal food. Can’t wait to be in Melbourne at this restaurant again. Waiter gave us a complimentary drink for the next visit!

Be careful! The guys at the door will throw some deals to get you in, but not worth it. Went there with my 7 other friends, the guy at the door promised about the taste and quality of food. Other dishes were ok but risotto was tasteless and chicken parma was hard and burnt as if it was fried a few times. Worst Italian food I had in my life!!
TheFitFoodie
My partner and I had our Valentines Dinner here and booked online with complimentary sparkling to kick the night off which was lovely. The restaurant was busy which was to be expected but staff were still very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was great, we sat right on he cobble stones amongst all the action and loved it. Sadly this is where it ended for us. The food simply was not to standard. From the bread to the mashed potato to the meat and seafood it all was bland, over cooked, lumpy or just not quite right. My partner did love the steak on the meat and seafood platter we had though. My mussels were cold, the calamari was average and the fish was disgusting. My favourite part of the meal was the bread - not a good sign.
We would not return based on this experience.
Arbeeton
The poached egg in my Caesar salad was cold, firm and soggy. The chicken pieces were massive chunks and tasted awful where they had been burnt by the grill.

Visited Hardware Street with a girlfriend friend for lunch and found competition between the restaurants to be rife. We were offered numerous 'on the house' options and thought that Grill Steak Seafood was offering us the best, with drinks and garlic bread on the house.... However, come to order and our alcoholic beverages could only be the house options and we were could only order the large main meals not entrees etc. I understand they neesed to make their money, but think we should have been told when the offer was made, as we only felt like smaller options to eat.

Great setting and atmosphere and friendly, attentive staff.

Got bribed in with my girlfriends for a 15% off the meal and alcohol. Didn’t let us order alcohol because we look “too young” ( we are 26 years old) clearly stated we didn’t have our IDs on us before entering. Food was overpriced and didn’t give us an outdoor seat like they promised before entry. Didn’t finish our food and they “forgot” the 15% off. Wasted a quality Saturday dinner with my girlfriends.

Been twice now, once as a group and as a couple - both times, service was on the ball from the get-go and knew how to strike the right balance of attentive, helpful and personable but not pestering. Seems rare nowadays.

Food has been a consistently good experience across the board, but is a little above what I would expect in price. Medium to large serves of salad, properly done chips and the red meat is exactly the high standard you should expect from a place with 2/3rds of its name dedicated to it.

The look and feel of the place is the standard Hardware Lane eatery - which agrees with me perfectly. Would recommend for people or groups where you have a wide range of food preference so you can all order something very different and be sure it is up to a good standard across the board.

Had dinner there with my friend last night , food overall is all right , nothing spectacular, but it didn’t disappoint us simultaneously . I have to admit the service is good , staff are very efficient & friendly .This place is perfect for summer outdoor dining .

I went here for my birthday
The staff is friendly and very helpful
The food was decent but I had a great experience with the amazing seating and the great staff :)
A good place for any celebration

Overpriced for the mediocre standard of the food. $25.50 for 5, half "seared" scallops? The pork belly crackling was soft and not crisp as it should be. Overall un-impressed and to add insult to injury, on the final bill they levy a 2.5% surcharge for paying by Visa, notwithstanding the menu stated a 1.8% surcharge. Under the current law 2.5% would seem to be illegal?

A friend booked this restaurant for Christmas lunch on Sunday for a group of 25 people including children. We have the section on the right of the restaurant, almost like a separate room to ourselves which is great for privacy. On our table, we ordered the sharing platter, linguine marinara, pork ribs, mocktail and lemon lime bitter and finished with coffee. The sharing platter is quite good, recommended for 4 people to share. Linguine marina was quite generous in serving and tasty. Pork ribs however are not the best, the meat was a little tough and could use more sauce. Staff are quite attentive and friendly.

In hard way lane there is much intense competition between all the Resteraunts. We chose this one first as they were upfront with their offers. And they gave us space to look at the menu without overwhelming pressure. A great atmosphere, the street bussing with activity. We had three waiters take care of us. Yass was our host who was delightful and attentive to our needs. We received a complimentary glass of wine and homemade dips which were delicious. We had the hot/cold seafood platter. Overall we enjoyed our meal. The fish was cooked to our liking. The platter had natural and kilpatric oysters. The kilpatric was a little over done with the bacon. We enjoyed our meal overall. The prawns were delicious. I could have eaten more than one. Thank you for a pleasant evening
Would not recommend! Service was from 4 different waiters, had to wait a long time. I ordered the avo with feta on toast and the feta was almost non existent. I added Bacon for $4 and got 3 pieces of shortcut that were cooked on the grill and were lifeless.

Pasta was average at best, chicken was so dry. Portion was pretty generous although still overpriced for the quality of food that you get. Service was okay. You do get the lively Hardware Street (Lygon Street?) ambience dining here.

Worse food in melbourbe its an absolute joke they are still in business. Disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Worse food in melbourbe its an absolute joke they are still in business. Disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As others have mentioned we were almost pushed into here by the salesman outside offering special deals, however we actually received ours which is nice, a free starter. Food was fresh and fairly quick for the time of day we dined. Would go back again.

In continuing my city adventures I decided to go back to Hardware Lane to try another place and since I was in the mood for steak, I chose Grill Steak Seafood. I ordered the Porterhouse Steak with a side of beer battered fries and mushroom sauce. What I like about Hardware Lane is that if you walk up and down the length of it you're sure to hear some good deals and specials during breakfast and lunch hours. They don't just take your patronage for granted, they work for it to win you over.

I had the steak medium because medium means it's well cooked but still nice and juicy and tender, which is what this steak was. A bit peppery on top and with the mushroom sauce it was flatly divine. Good tasting chips to go with it so all in all a very nice meal. I've noticed in Melbourne now that there is a lot of militant veganism appearing in the form of graffiti, chalk messages and what not on the streets. My thinking is that if God hadn't intended man to eat meat he wouldn't have made cows with so much meat on them, so slow moving and so delicious. Let's fact it, in 'the wild' a cow wouldn't last five minutes.

Hell experience

Fairly speaking, the food is just OK. But the food is soooo overpriced

The service is awful and the boss is extremely rude. We saw the table beside us has 50% off and we asked if we can get a further discount. The boss call us greedy twice and take back the discount we already received yell at the cashier full price

It's ok you don't want give us discount but your behavior is so not gentleman
Kelley Morgan
Great food, great drinks, and great service. Thank you Kosta for your hospitality, we were so impressed by the menu and quality of the food. We will definitely be back, I highly recommend this restaurant for the outstanding service.
Rui Taro
Extremely pushy staff. I was with friends, and the guy who was greeting people came up to us and was EXTREMELY pushy and haggling us from the get mentioning a "discount" at "50%" or whatever fake amount he wanted to mention. After being pushed into the restaurant by the guy with no chance to leave due to the haggling and pushiness. After we finally ordered, we had to wait more than 30 mins for the food even after going to the counter and asking for it twice. The food that finally came was bland and not worth it. When the bill came, it was a complete and utter scam. We were charged $100 + for 3 dishes (an appetizer, and 2 pastas), despite having this amazing "50% discount" which was obviously a scam.

Take my advice, if the guy who works here tries to haggle you just walk off as fast as you can.

Food: From reading some of the other reviews, I think I made a lucky choice when visiting Grill Steak Seafood. I had the lamb shanks and they were beautiful. Two huge pieces of lamb, which just fell off the bone in a flavoursome rich sauce.

Atmosphere/service: Both were fine, the restaurant decor was pleasant, it seems a little newer than some other nearby restaurants. Service was efficient.

Would I recommend it: My lamb shanks were beautiful and actually very good value for the size, so from my personal experience, yes. However, having seen some of the other meals which were brought out, all meals are not that generous, and look a little overpriced.
Stephanie Shen
Very fresh and tender steak (aged 30 days) with creamy mushroom sauce. And it's my first time to try hot Irish coffee, which is cool. Servers were kindly welcoming. Won't feel cold even if sat outside.
Danielle Eats
Over priced and bland. Dragged in by the man outside who claimed this was the most authentic Italian in Melbourne and asked if we were drinking that night. I said no so he offered me and my dining companion 15% off our bill. Ok we'll try it out.

Food was average and totally hyped up. Kangaroo was absolutely dry and chewy despite it being cooked medium rare. I don't think they let the to rest for 10 mins before slicing it up. What a waste of a beautiful cut of meat. Servings were small and did not reflect the high price tag. Pasta was drenched in olive oil and that was pretty much the only thing I could taste. The mussels had a 'funky' taste to them. Either undercooked or fresh-frozen. You can find fresher seafood at Vic markets.

Other tables we noticed weren't too happy as well. They were a little more outspoken and received free mini glasses of Port. Way better Italian worth your $$ in Carlton. Won't be returning.
Amanda.finnegan84
Amazing service, offered 2 complementary drinks and entree as we sat down,
Both meals cooked to our liking, 2 complementary glasses of Port as we finished our meal!
Perfect service, will be coming back here again for sure!

I had breakfast here today with my parents and some long time friends, because my pick of Manchester Press was unfortunately closed. However, trying to keep an open mind to these things my parents chose Grill Steak Seafood when the manager offered them free coffee to dine there. Between the five of us, we ordered three serves of corn fritters, one vegetarian breakfast, and I chose the pork belly eggs.

In short, average at best. Starting with the corn fritters, disastrous. These doughy creations resembled corn-flavoured dish cloths, and were just as bland. However the bacon they were topped with was well received. The vegetarian breakfast was reported to be okay, however the hash brown in the middle seemed an odd addition. My pork belly eggs were tasty, but far from wonderful. The pork was crispy and well cooked, but may have been cooked earlier and reheated because the outside was noticeably dry. The staff were able to provide one or use with some toast and jam, and the coffee was okay.

This said, the waiter and management took our feedback well and there was no argument about making the fritters complimentary.
Good Food Good Mood
This seems to have really bad reviews but I've eaten here both inside and outside, for lunch and dinner and always found it very enjoyable. I've only come here with interstate visitors as the laneway is a good dining choice for tourists atmosphere wise and as there has generally been about ten of us the staff have always given us a free round of drinks and delicious complimentary garlic bread and dips which is a lovely gesture. I've always gone for the Parma and it's never disappointed me. Good ambiance and I can't complain about the food either although I could probably never dislike a place that gave me free wine
Caitlin Maree
Was not very impressed by this restaurant. Came here to have a nice meal out with my mum and the food was very average and a little bit over priced for what it was. The glasses and cutlery was warm and so was the water brought out to our table. The service was friendly though.
Aik
Hardware Societyis recommended by many friends. As the restaurant was full, so we try to get another restaurant, and end up here.
Apparently, the service is so slow! I need to wait until 15 minutes, and have to asked the waiter to speed up our order as we have a flight to catch. 5 minutes later our order came. The food itself is good.
Emily Coffey
We loved this venue! We knew we wanted to have seafood of some sort down one of the laneways in the city & this one was a great choice! They didn't have any tables outside immediately available but they took us upstairs & said that a table would be ready shortly. By the time we sat down they came & grabbed us saying our table was ready. We got stuffed around a bit because we walked outside & our table wasn't actually ready so we had to go back inside. We hadn't even sat down when they advised that our table was indeed ready this time. We did notice that one of the staff got in trouble for the mix up. But from then on the service was impeccable! The meals were amazing! We had seafood risotto, seafood pasta & mussels between the three of us. Each meal was delicious! Staff we very friendly & attentive. & the meal was topped off with a free shot glass of port for each of us at the end! Great atmosphere! Excellent prices! Would definitely eat here again.
A Black Sheep
Came here for a work dinner. The staffs were friendly and this is the only positive comment I have. We ordered a starter platter to share, the only thing that was appealing was the calamari. The rest just looked as they were thrown to the platter. And I ordered a seafood paella for main. The rice was coloured well, but really mushy and bland. The mussels and prawns on the rice didn't have any seasoning or flovour. This was the worst paella I had ever had. The price was quite steep given the quality of food. I will not come back and would recommend you to spend your money elsewhere.
Zero Cool😎😎😎
Me and my wife went for dinner here, ordered pumpkin soup and bruschetta for starters. Both were average, the bread was dry and soup lacked the pumpkin flavour. For mains we ordered penne chicken and mushroom pasta and chicken Parma. The pasta was good, can't complain but the Parma sauce was bland and chicken over cooked. We"ve tried almost all restaurants nearby and I must say they all are pretty average and over hyped just because they are on hardware lane. Service by the manager/ owner was great and cocktail was good too, so an extra point for that!
Luc Wolthers
Grill steak seafood, that's about it. I had something grilled, my partner some seafood.

Perhaps if we just had the steak...

The location on hardware was nice enough, but it simply doesn't justify the price.
Rosemary Kingston
This restaurant (if you could call it that) is a total CON. The touts on the street entice people in with the promise of free first drinks for each customer, then cunningly add it to the bill. The food was very second rate, not delivered in a timely fashion; very expensive and not served very professionally. They need to pick up their game and not promise what they don't deliver. Our first and LAST time there.
Sayani Banerjee
Very good food. We loved the carbonara and meatballs.the portions were very good and filling.. the service was really good and so was the ambience.

Details: I am so sorry to say.... but I went for dinner here last night and was not happy at all. This is just one of those ridiculously over priced hard ware lane restaurants! My salmon salad had literally 3 pieces of salmon in it... maybe 4 😑 and my coffee was pretty average! I could have got a massive feed with a $26 meal instead from a cute little Asian place or sometning 😇

Decor: inside it is very pretty! Outside... I know people are pushy for you to come into their restaurant but I don't mind it.... gives you that European vibe.

Service: Very average! ... sorry 😇 I didn't like the pushy Ness for us to get desert and the wait to order my coffee@
ChiPs
I really hate giving a bad review but I have to agree with a few others here - it's really not a great place. We were looking at another place and got dragged into this one by the guy outside the restaurant. He literally pestered us and offered us a round of free drinks and remaining drinks at happy hour prices if we sat down. Once it came to settling the bill, the staff argued about the drinks prices saying they shouldn't have been free because we only ordered snack food and not main meals. This was despite the guy out front saying no worries when we said we don't want to get food. And then we had to pay the remaining drinks at full price despite them being advertised at "happy hour" prices. I just couldn't be bothered arguing at that point anymore. Further to that, when we did order drinks and entrees, they took forever to arrive and we had to remind them twice. Having said that, most of the other staff were friendly and they did try to be helpful, but it only takes a few bad ones to ruin the experience. Honestly, I don't plan on going back to this place again.
Lucy Gao
My friends and I were 'bribed' in for brunch, the food was okay but we weren't served some of the ingredients on the menu when the food came out. This happened to other tables too, so make sure you get everything that you order. I feel that this may have been done intentionally since some people may not remember the menu fully. So be careful. Anyway, we were offered free coffee for dining there but I wouldn't go back there again.

Quite possibly the worst brunch place I have ever been to, do not waste your money!! After being convinced with the offer of free coffees with our meal and with all other decent cafes in the area having a 30 min wait time, we decided that this place didn't look too shabby and thought we would give it a shot. The free coffees arrived but they were literally half filled with foam. I ordered the muesli with yogurt, strawberries and choice of milk....it came with no strawberries or milk. My friends ordered the vege breakfast....both came without the avocado smash. We had to ask them to bring our missing items, and even then the food was average at best. Would not come back.

Honestly do not care what the other review say. This places service was spatular, they made amazing recommendations and were there when we needed them by the second. Would recommend to anyone.

Another restaurant along Hardware lane that is reminiscent of all the restaurants in Lygon street, people trying to coax you in, and many of them producing similar food. This fits that bill to a tee. We had breakfast, the food was good, but nothing that made you crave to go back and the service was also good, they even helped balance out our wobbly table. I personally think if a place has great food, you don't need someone out front asking if you want to come in, but I understand that's how some businesses like to operate.

I had a catch up with two former colleagues over a lunch in this restaurant. One of them chose the venue, he ordered a Chicken Mirabella @ $19.50 and seem to be happy with it. I ordered a Risotto Mushroom (see photo) @ $17.90. It tasted good, nothing great. My other friend checked with the waiter her Gnocchi with Tomato @ $18.90 could be served in time for her to get back to work. The waiter kept reassuring her, so she confirmed her order. The dishes did arrived after about 10 minutes, but my friend was given a Mushroom Risotto instead of her Gnocchi. She asked the waiter if it would take long to get the right dish, otherwise she planed to accept the wrong serving. She was again assured it could be done soon. The gnocchi came after 5 mins... I have never seen a proper restaurant serving a dish with 8 pieces of gnocchi and 5 cherry tomatoes thrown together in a small pool of tomato sauce. That's it. A $18.90 dish, which looks more like a dish your kids make at home for afternoon snacks. I was so shocked that I forgot to take a photo.
The restaurant looks great but hardly got any service. We had a table on the footpath with a pool of water under our feet after the overnight rain. It was hard to wave down a waiter because everyone just sticks to their own task. The guy at the bar/counter was very reluctant to get our bill at the cashier, he just let us wait until he realised no one else would serve us at the counter.
Such experience explains why other restaurants in Hardware Lane were all packed during lunchtime peak hour, but not Grill Steak Seafood.
Honestly, if you are hungry and desperate, go for it. But if you want great food and good value, I don't think you will be too happy with this restaurant.

No words can even describe how I am feeling.

We were lured in by staff as we were in search of lunch on our last day in Melbourne. My first impression was that this place didn't look too shabby. I had expectations that food was going to be great as not only did they look quite busy but also because it was a restaurant on Hardware Lane (I was told food here on this lane was amazing). The waiters were lovely at first - very welcoming and warm. I guess it was just a way to get us to dine here as the friendliness didn't last very long after we ordered. It took around 40 minutes for our food to arrive and I watched people who had waited longer, just got up and left. Though we still remained patient and was looking forward to our food.

I ordered the chicken mushroom pasta, my partner had the pork belly and we had the bruchetta as our entree. The bruchetta was average, nothing special. The pasta was bland, cold and disappointing. Moving on to the pork belly.. I didnt think we could go wrong with choosing the pork belly but let me just say this, it took both of our strength to cut through the pork belly. It was chewy, dry and was hardly edible.

In the end, we just paid the bill and left disappointed, with barely touching our food. Grill Steak Seafood makes Hardware Lane look bad -there are many other great options nearby. I definitely would not recommend.

In search of lunch in the CBD today I stumbled across Grill Steak Seafood. I ordered their Chicken Mirabella (crumbed chicken breast, mushroom sauce, served with chips and mixed salad) - just for a variation on the usual Chicken Parma and at $19.50 I felt the meal was good value. The chicken with mushroom sauce was flavoursome and the thick chips were great, it was served steaming hot and within 15 minutes of ordering. Staff service provision however was good but not great, as I was leaving I made a point of thanking them & not one of the three guys even acknowledged me. The male staff also spoke very loudly to each other, a little unnecessary with the restaurant far from crowded & the background pop music at a reasonable level.

The Juror's Verdict: Food 4/5, Service Provision 3/5, Will I return: Maybe.

Phill Jury (food critic & writer)

We ate here last Saturday and the food was horrible. The steak was a weird texture - like spam. It was most likely processed meat. The prawns had the intestinal tracts still in them - so the poo wasn't removed. Just tasteless and horrible. I wish we'd looked at the low review on Zomato before eating here.

I come down to hardware lane quite a bit and tried this place for the first time last night. To start we ordered the dips. A little small but they were on the house along with complimentary drinks so we were happy. Mains arrived within 20 minutes of ordering.
The linguine marinara was very pleasing and had a beautiful balance of flavors and was a good size. The truffle mushroom gnocchi was tasty but rather small - probably best if you were wanting something light. We finished with coffee which was 10/10 😊.
Overall the service was good, food was pleasing and the atmosphere, as always on hardware, was amazing.
I don't know if I'll be back, however. While we appreciated the complimentary entre and drinks, the menu, while extensive, was just a little bland. I enjoyed the night but, for me, the only things I liked on the menu were Italian and there's an Italian place just up from there that does it even better.

This is a very long-awaited review.

I dined here with my partner on New Year's Eve and we were thoroughly impressed with our meals. In fact we were so happy with our experience that we still talk about the deliciousness of the meals 5 months on.

I ordered the Gnocchi Tomatoes and my partner ordered the 30 day Aged Eye Fillet cooked rare. Grill Steak Seafood seriously made one of the most delicious gnocchi dishes I have ever had, and my partner, (who is more picky when it comes to food than I am), loved every single mouthful of his steak. We have been planning on returning since we left the place.

We may make Grill Steak Seafood our go-to restaurant for future anniversary celebrations, it is seriously that special to the two of us. I cannot wait to try all that their menu has to offer. Great job guys.

Got dragged in by the almost aggressive greeter as pretty new visitors to Melbourne. Food sounds amazing and there's a really big range on the menu. It looks amazing too but has NO flavour. Chicken parma was bland while mushroom risotto was mostly garlic. Pineapple juice was out of a long life carton I'm sure. Service is not bad apart from the excuses for bland food - 'so you can choose how much salt you add at the table'
The food was overpriced
The wait was long
The wait staff rude, non attentive , arrogant
We were lured in by wait staff out the front ....what a mistake we ordered trio of dips and soup for the entree firstly it took 45 minutes to be delivered, secondly the bread was stale and dry. We were told there was no soup then the soup appeared. We had to fight to get waitstaff attention for a drink. Our mains took another hour to be served my ribs were dry and chewy and my partners steak although not bad wasn't good either not to mention the hard undercooked chips and curdled aioli that I had to spit out. When asked how our meals were I advised the waitress not good she bought the manager over who instead of hearing me out began to argue with me. I complained about the wait time and that we had waited almost two hours for our main to which he advised it was because we ordered an entree, well all the other patrons orders entrees too. I advised him of the fatty/dry/ chewy ribs and undercooked chips to which he spoke over me and advised that he had been over 5 times and we never said anything (this was false) the waitress advised they had never had a complaint to which I highly doubt it. The manager was arrogant and defensive instead of hearing me out he preferred to argue. He decided to dock our bill however when he gave us the bill he continued to argue. In the end we paid 92 for soup, porterhouse, 1x wine glass, 2 Pepsi and a mojito what a rip off I do not recommend this place to anyone. Don't not be deceived by the spacious restaurant you will have a better meal at McDonald's

It was a balmy Friday night and the wifey accompanied by an uncle wanted to take advantage of the great weather so decided to sit outside. It was our second time here. We were drawn here by the lively atmosphere, live music and good quality food and service, reminded us of Europe. As locals we know this as a hotspot for tourists and normally by that regard we would normally stay well clear of such venues as most touristy places aren't well known for their quality of food nor service, however to our delight after having been there not long ago actually hosting 2 French travelers we were rather impressed so we came back. Greeted warmly by one of the managers we were ushered to a table outside in front of all the lively action. Struck a deal which saw us with a complimentary bottle of red. Winning. Wifey had the linguine marinara, good flavors, well balanced, whilst myself and uncle had the scotch fillet cooked medium rare with red wine jus and the awesome head waiter Olivier threw in some mushroom sauce on the side for us to try and dabble our chips in. Second time having this steak and I can honestly say one of the better steaks I've had in a long time. Nice char grilled flavor and well seasoned, didn't even really need the sauce. Having been to another steak house recently and ordered the same cut it was awefull in comparison to this by miles. Now for desert, we had a passion fruit Pana cotta, Creme brûlée and sticky date pudding, all of which were delicious, however what topped it off was the service from Olivier our friendly French waiter. Very quick, sharp and attentive service topped off with a French accent. He even gave us a free glass of port each and we shared some very basic French dialogue and shared some travel itineraries in France. Then we got to meet the actual owner Vons, who was a great guy, very relaxed, approachable and seemed down to earth. We all had a bit of a chat to him and turns out he use to own the Vons restaurant a few doors down. He reminded us of the rock Dwayne Johnson, which he said he has been called that before. My uncle being a masseuse by trade started talking shop to him and exchanged business cards and at the end of the night he even came out to greet us goodbye along with Olivier. Al in all a top night of great quality food, awesome service and great company. Life is good. Will definitely be back.
Wolf Of Collins St.
they deserve to have average 2.
First of all two rude waiters. so now talk about food, my chicken wrapped in parma ham was really good. The pasta a disaster, Medium to rear steak was served absolutely well done and Garlic prawns was mmmeh. Prices are high for the rude service and not good quality.
So again they deserve to have avg. 2.5

Sat down here for lunch as everywhere nearby was busy. Made me a bit nervous so checked the reviews on zomato and considered leaving but my elderly mother was with us and not that mobile. The good news is lunch was very pleasant if a little over priced. I had the caprese salad simple and tasty. My mum the ravioli, a little al dente for her but I thought it good. Our rellies had the kangaroo - pronounced good as was the beetroot pumpkin salad with prawns. They gave us a free drink which made the meal good value.

Ok but not great sums it up. Half of the scotch fillet cooked medium instead of medium rare. The mushroom sauce was an oily grey when it should be a creamy brown. You can't order a side of mixed vegetables but need to pick which veggie you would like. However the atmosphere was nice.

Although I can do without it, I don't really mind the touting for business the "gentlemen" do in Hardware Lane- however, tonight I went to eat out with my young son and was twice told I was making a bad decision while walking away from the rude man at this restaurant. He then called me an idiot. I ignored him and we had a delicious dinner at Max, on the same block. However, my young son was upset at hearing me called an idiot and, as I teach him to stand up to himself, I went back to the restaurant to tell this man I didn't appreciate his behaviour. When I calmly spoke with him, he first denied saying it, then told me he was speaking to his staff. As I walked away he shouted after me that I was in fact an idiot. Actually GSS, I am not the idiot as I won't spend money at an institution whose staff treat people badly. The food may well be great but my dollars are too hard earned to waste in a restaurant that allows staff to behave in this appalling manner.

Bad eggs, mediocre coffee, disappointing. Touted in with the offer of a free coffee, but when the coffee came - no crema, weak and lacking flavour. Overcooked poached eggs 😡

The staff is very deceptive and pushy. We basically got forced to sit down, however, we decided to give it a shot. After we were set, the staff were rude and service was slow.

During our order, we ordered a steak, which on the menu it was $25 and I pointed to it as well. The waiter ask, what kind of steak do you want, aged or not and how do you want the steak done. He told me to get the aged as it was better and I agreed and her recommend the mushroom sauce. When I paid, the aged steak was actually $40 and charged me $3 for the sauce. The waiter did not disclosed any of this. I ended up paying double then I expected.

The steak was over cooked the the sauce was watered down.

My partner and I did not enjoy the experience and the food was terrible. We do not recommend this place.

Went here on a whim and had the marinara linguine. It started off a bit bland but by the end I was kind of liking it and wanting more. The staff are a bit of a mix, some were dismissive, some over enthusiastic.

This was a horrible experience... Ordered my food which took a very long time to arrive - came without my drink too... The spaghetti and meatballs was ordinary to say the least - tasted like they had opened Heinz spaghetti and warmed it up... Meatballs were warm at best and were pretty flavorless. Drink still didn't arrive. Decided the meal wasn't worth trying any longer and asked for the cheque. Twice. Waited 10 minutes just to try to pay for the meal that wasn't worth it while the hype guys at the front had a lengthy conversation about nothing and ignored the need to give the wait staff a kick. After a while I decided to just take matters in to my own hands and went inside to more rude staff.
Horrible food.
Horrible service.
Don't waste your time or money...

If you’ve ever been down Hardware Lane in the evening, you’ll know of this strip of restaurants and their eager waiters trying to coax you into dining at their establishment. We had a booking for 12 at Grill Steak Seafood so we already knew where we wanted to go, but just did not know which restaurant it was.

Because there are canopies shadowing over the outdoors dining area, we couldn’t really see the building signage. When we did find the right restaurant, we were greeted by a friendly gentleman who showed us to our table.

We had initially wanted to order the set menus as seen on their website however, upon asking about the menu we were told that it was only available for groups of 20 or more. It should really be stated somewhere that there was a minimum of 20 before you could get that menu because it is pretty misleading, especially because we had already decided upon the set menu being easier for our large group before coming in.

Check out the review of Grill Steak Seafood in the blog post below.

A real disappointment on my last day in Melbourne. Not a reflection of the many fantastic restaurants around the area. Food was uninspiring and not value for money. I ordered the fish of the day which was snapper with scallops and asparagus. Scallops were rubbery and over cooked. Asparagus was burned. Service was slow. Definitely would not come back again.

Good service but bad food! I ordered linguine marinara and the pasta is tasteless without any flavour, which consists of olive oil with a few seafood meat without any garlic!! The mussel is not fresh and it stinks! The worst spent $30!!! :(

Ate here with a group of 6 on a visit to Melbourne for a family birthday. Were persuaded to dine here by the older gentleman out the front. Had a lovely antipasto plate with fresh bread and a great bruschetta, complimentary round of drinks and fried olives (which sound odd but were actually really tasty!) Everyone was happy with their meals, decent serves too. Special mention goes to the marinara which was very flavoursome, and the scallops wrapped in pancetta -- so good! Service was very friendly and attentive. A good night all round!

Gives Hardware Lane a bad name. This is one of the many restaurants that line Hardware Lane, with hawkers out the front inviting guests in. Most are pretty good but not all. A colleague chose this venue as it had a few gluten-free options, amidst a broad cafe menu with lots of promising sounding choices. I admit l struggled to decide and eventually settled on the pumpkin, beetroot and feta salad, with added chicken. The result was a large plate with lots of baby spinach leaves, three pieces of grilled chicken with a tang of cooking gas and not a lot of feta, pumpkin or beetroot for $25. The salad was well seasoned l must say. As it was a work day, we settled on water rather than wine, but we were hassled by at least four wait staff to order drinks. At the end of all that, the restaurant has a 2.5% surcharge for standard credit cards (Visa, Mastercard). Not good enough - l won't be going back and recommend that you don't either.

We decided to go here because it was the only restaurant in the whole lane that didn't have a tout pounce on us and we could look at the menu. That was until the Polynesian or Maori working there called to us there was a table. When I asked him if they would offer us a free glass of wine (because all the other restaurants had) he looked at me like I was rude and said "well we don't do that after 5pm but we will this time if you order a main AND BECAUSE YOU ASKED! That was a bit of a raised eyebrow for us both given all the other restaurants were enrlticing us. I'm sure if he was in our position he would have done the same thing.

Anyway after sitting down the service was fantastic. My spaghetti meatballs was a good serve but lacked flavor and I wasn't asked if I wanted more parmesan as it had already been put on it. Too bad if you didn't want it. My girlfriend's calamari with salad looked ok but she never commented. In all we had a good time catching up but I will suggest we try another one as we have in the past next time we are in Hardware Lane.

What a great night my friends and I had! We only came in on Sunday for deserts and the waiter was so funny. He convinced us that the sticky date puddings were amazing, and they were! Will definitely be returning soon to try out their dinner and have a laugh with the staff!

Great service, awesome food. At our table we had pork belly, lamb shanks, chicken and kangaroo. All we more than satisfactory :)

The ambiance was brilliant - we had Gareth Wiecko entertaining us and it set the mood perfectly.

We were looked after by Harry and Ivo. The gentlemen were professional, courteous and had a great sense of humour! We felt at home.

Would very highly recommend it :)

The ambience of this place was simply amazing with a lane full of incredibly good looking waiters and not to mention delicious food! I had mouth watering eye fillet steak and my partner had juicy pork belly. Would definitely reccomend everyone to come here!

My friends and I were down at Hardware Lane on a Friday night, looking for something to eat. We decided to go at Grill Steak seafood. I must say first, our meals arrived promptly and secondly the food was divine and really good . We had the dips with the bread, the garlic prawns the chicken parma and the barramundi, everything was great. The service was really good and our main waiter was attentive to anything we wanted. We also ordered our dessert and we chose the creme brûlée and our main waiter recommended to also get the sticky date pudding. Thank you to our main waiter with the glasses really good service.

By far the worst restaurant I have ever been to. Got ushered in by some Italian salesman. Ordered a vodka lime soda as I knew the wine would be terrible. They couldn't even get the vodka right.. It was so bad I didn't go past the first sip. The soft drinks and soda were flat. We ordered bruschetta which came out as soggy bread and tomato that may aswell have been swiped across as a wet dirt floor. I ordered lamb cutlets and I was too scared to eat it, the meat smelled off and was cooked poorly. Terrible service and disgusting food. You would get much better value for money and nicer food eating at McDonalds. This restaurant should be shut down !!
Gastrology
Grill Steak Seafood sits across 3 venues in Hardware Lane. However, the massive presence is not an indication of the quality of food on offer. We were very unimpressed by the highly inconsistent cooking of the steaks and quality of the beef. . The sauces were anaemic and devoid of flavour and the chips were straight from a packet. The dessert was pleasant but nothing that you couldn't get at an average pub. With so many excellent other options in Melbourne, we recommend you give this one a miss.

Was wooed into this place by the smooth talking host who offered a free premium spirit with our meal (of our choice). After being asked what we'd like to order after like 2 minutes, the waiter told us the complimentary drink was a shiraz or beer... we politely advised him of the offer to which he reciprocated with a counter offer, which we accepted.

We received what was supposed to be a vodka, lemon, lime and soda... appears they forgot the vodka.

The meal was okay, although I wouldnt rave about a dry chicken involtini for $32.

To top off the meal, we were never offered any water (despite the cups being on the table) and then they sneakily tried to charge us for the "complimentary drink".

Wouldn't be back!
Matt_from_Preston
Don't let the negative comments put you off. Some people are just that way, no matter what. Family of four had an excellent meal here, sat outside under heaters, wait staff excellent, good value, great little location and an overall great experience, would recommend to other visitors to Melbourne.

The service was appaulling. We sat inside and were totally overlooked all night and the restaurant was quiet, hate to experience the service on a busy night. The waiter was so rude when we very nicely pointed out that they had not yet taken our order. I ordered the pork belly and the skin was like a soft piece of rubber, Master Chef would be horrified at the lack of any crispy skin. A very disappointing experience.
Sol_n_chai
My partner and I ate here a few weeks ago. I ordered the seafood risotto and my partner had the pork belly dish. Both were absolutely wonderful. It was just the service that slipped a little if I had to fault anything. However, they were very busy and the waiter did keep topping up my water glass.

Made my night . Great food, amazing service throughout the night .
Would highly recommend to friends and family for dinners, functions meetings or just a coffee
