đ±Lizzieâs first impression: great interior that feels like an institution, great selection of wine and even better steak.
đ©Lizzie enjoyed: Iâm glad it opened up again during these situations so I was able to do a sneaky steak night. The steak that I chose was delicious â Iâm not usually the best steak fan but the steak I had here were super juicy and tender. It also had a smoky taste to it.
đ
Lizzie did not enjoy: Their potato fries werenât my favourite in the world -werenât super crispy but were still fluffy on the inside.
đ„Lizzie rates overall: A great place for a steak night and perfect with a glass of red to finish off with.
Rolled up at 6.30pm on a Monday thinking it would be quiet, the place was busy but managed to get a table. Service was on point, very friendly and attentive. Steaks were perfectly cooked, as I like well done, most places try and butterfly them but not in Rare. The sides were tasty, especially the fried onions. So all in all a good meal and very nice atmosphere.
I ordered from deliveroo and I've eaten quite few of them from different places but I gotta say this place did well in cooking my steak. I ordered a medium steak and they delivered it well and delicious i love it so much don't even the sauces. I'll order again :)
Very impressed, good food, wine and great service. Attention to detail was great, taking note of my wifeâs birthday without prompting !! we enjoyed a share platter for two and bottle of Shiraz !
Good value weekday dinner. 2 courses (including a 200g steak) plus a glass of wine or beer for $40. The roasted mushrooms were delicious and steak was cooked well. Will be back during for the special.
The consistency of Rare does not falter between branches. The $40 2-course lunch menu is fantastic and offers up an entrée, main and beverage. The Dear Luncher sampled the chicken wings first up. The blue cheese dipping sauce for this dish was simply superb and ended up being finished off with just a fork. It was that delectable.
Â
The rump steak for the main, also outstanding and this is the sort of place where if you ask for medium â you actually get medium.
Â
Rare delivers yet again. Worthwhile knowing you will not be let down no matter which of their three CBD establishments you visit.
Good steak for sure. The wine we ordered wasnât perfect though. The way they presented the mashed potato is a highlight to the steak. Service wasnât very active. We enjoyed the meal anyway.
Craving some steak within the CBD it seems Rare has made a little bit of a nesting for itself with 3 separate locations. This location looked familiar, a bit of research tells me this was formally Squires Loft and I wouldn't be suprised if it was from the same restaurant group.
The place itself still maintained a warm dark ambience all enclosed with lovely brick walls. We skipped over entree as we wanted dessert, we did get pretty peckish waiting for those steaks however and were begging for some bread and butter.
I was fixated on the 350g rib eye, it came out attached and there was plenty of meat on the bone. Nice char marks on the piece of meat and was beautifully medium rare as requested. No chewy bits, just some juicy firm steak. Steak can be a bit of a risk at times (I always seem so unlucky) so I was glad I finally got something solid. The steaks are completed with a side, the baked potato with sour cream was nice and creamy and the steak chips were pretty amazing and crisp.
I also polished off a classic sticky date pudding. I was pretty full at this point and the sugar from the cake, butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream just made it sweeter with each bite. Too much for me but I know others who'd welcome it.
Great food and good atmosphere. Really quick confirmation and service over the Easter holiday. Would definitely recommend this steak place. Customer service was good.
We came here in a group to do the $40 2 course dinner with a drink deal. Have to say that this was excellent value for money. The steak was cooked perfectly, the calamari was tasty and the Shiraz went well with the meal! Would 100% return here. Much better food than meat and wine co in my opinion :)
Heard of this place on the news after the Vegan protest event happened and thought if they hated it, it must be good.
Was very happy with the meal. Had the Jack's Creek Wagyu, Pan Seared Scallops, Roasted Mushrooms and Crispy Onions with a side of Garlic Creamy Sauce and Mushroom Sauce
The Steak was cooked to medium rare as I asked and had bits of great marbling and parts with lean meat through the steak. Seasoning was on point and I could personally eat it without indulging on the sauces.
Pan Seared Scallops were a miss as they turned out overcooked and a bit rubbery.
Roasted Mushrooms was nice, especially for people who like Feta.
The Fried Crispy Onions are like what you get at Ribs&Burgers.
Overall it was a pleasant experience. I'll definately keep this place in mind when I feel like Steak.

Been to 5 different restaurants for steak in the past 2 weeks, the steak I had at rare steak house was the best!!
$30 lunch menu definitely worth the value!! But itâs so disappointing they removed oysters as a side option đ
The garlic prawns are not what I was expecting, my expectations were too high ( I forgot itâs $30 menu).
Perfect place when youâre craving a steak with some good ambience! The eye fillet was exceptionally tender and the crispy onions are a must. Weâll definitely be back in the future!
I loved this place. I love the ambience of the restaurant and it has 2 levels. I tried the steak tartare, and I had a porterhouse with garlic butter. The steak was just melting in your mouth with every bite and cooked to perfection with that beautiful charcoal grill taste like it should. Perfect place for a steak and would love to come back!
Visited previously when it was Squires Loft and must say it wasnât as good đ The staff did say they were short staffed and we returned 20 minutes later, directed to bar for a drink but nobody served us! Went to our table & ordered drinks & food. Starters came out very closely followed by mains so we had to eat both together! Saying that the garlic bread was amazing! My steak was very nice but perhaps a tiny over cooked. Ribs would have appreciated a little more sauce but were very tender đ Perhaps a full complement of staff would have enhanced our experience đ Staff were friendly and chatty đ
Went there with a mate last night. Staff were friendly and food was served on time. I ordered the beef ribs which was nice and served with salad (mini salad ) really . Chips Was nice and I liked the sticky date. Bill for my friend and I was total of 150 which I reckon is a bit overpriced but we enjoyed the meal.
Service: 3.5
I understand they were busy but the dishes took too long to be served. Our mains itself took 45 minutes.
Food:
Coffin Bay Oysters (Tasting Plate)
There was 4 different flavours and 8 oysters in total. I can't remember the flavours but there were pretty good. Downside, the oysters weren't fresh.
Steaks-Porterhouse and Scotch fillet
All nicely done and you can choose your own sides, ranging from chips, mash potatoes (presented in the shape of a potato but looked rather unappetising) and simple garden salad.
Fish of the day- Snapper $32
Now this is a dish that I believe is overpriced. The amount of fish given were minimal (see pic) and I was still hungry when I finished. This is coming from a person with a small appetite. The accompanying veggies were alright, nothing
special.
Warm Sticky Date Pudding
This was my first time trying a date pudding so I can't make any comparisons. The presentation was pretty but I found the desert way too sweet and hence the lack of use of the extra caramel sauce provided on the side. We were only given one date per dish, wish there was more.
Well presented steak dish tasted delightful wide range of wine as expected, The service was on point! Overall I didn't get enough serving of Mash only downside.
Nice ambience with friendly staff.. delicious food and the best desserts.. tried chicken maryland with spinach and tomato risotto and chicken breast with mushroom sauce plus chips on side.. The best part of the visit is their delicious sticky date pudding and flourless chocolate cake.. will go back just for the desserts more than anything đ
I ordered eye fillet and scotch fillet. The eye fillet was really fantastic, it was tasty tender and juicy. The scotch wasnt really that great, it was really hard and its taste wasnt that great. However, the reason on why I gave a high rating was because of the service is really fantastic. The waitress is always checking on the food prepared in each table and when you are disasstified with the meat they offer you to cook it again or give you another meat. I refused his offer and he gave me another offer which was free drink or desert. 5/5 for service and 4/5 for food. By the way if you are looking for a great sides the fries would be the best.
Lovely steaks hereïŒwith great sides and prompt service. My gf got the scotch fillet and I got the rib eyeïŒand we both really enjored both. Would definitly return.
nice hidden steakhouse in the city. great place for couples and meat lover. when ordering, go for the signatures dishes stated on the menu. pork ribs are sooooo nice with chips
Love little gems down little alleys ways.
Being a vegetarian can sometimes pose a problem when friends want to go to a steak house. However instead of the token veggie stack there was a beautiful thyme gnocchi dish that was amazing. I also tasted the sauces that my friends had with their steaks and they were out of this world! Thick and packed full of flavour. Can not rate the steak myself however friends said it was great.
We never had to pick up the bottle of wine or water as staff were very attentive, will recommend.
We went to Rare Midtown to celebrate our 3rd Anniversary and found the restaurant online. We live locally so decided to walk a cpl of blocks to try it out. We ordered entrees of Scallops and another of Pork Belly, the scallops were to die for, 10/10 the pork belly was good but slightly overcooked with minimal crackling we rated that at 6/10 having tried it at numerous places around town.
For the mains I ordered medium Eye Fillet with chips and a mushroom sauce, my gf ordered medium porterhouse with chips and a side salad, both were excellent and very soft and delicious 8/10 for the mains.
The only issue we had was that as a special romantic dinner we were a little disappointed to find that upstairs we were seated with a very noisy table of 14 guys, with another table for 20 set and ready to go, thankfully we had left before they arrived.
For those wanting a special evening with their partners I would recomend you ask for a table downstairs, as upstairs seems to be where the 'groups' are sent.
All in all, the food was fantastic, but for us the large loud tables took away from the evening, and for a spend of $160 for 2 we expected a little better in that regard.
7/10 from us, we live in the CBD and dine out 4/5 times a week.
Attentive waiter (manager?) who seemed a little overzealous if anything about the quality of service a friend and I received last night.
His overbearing stare combined with wanting actual feedback to questions most waiters would have brushed off left me with an impression that he actually did care about the quality of service provided.
Going so far as to pause and wait for an answer to "How is your meal" to each of us before moving onto the next table added a degree of humor to the otherwise darkened and somewhat rustic decor and lighting.
The food itself was well priced, we each had the $40 menu set which was well priced and did save quite a lot if you're interested in saving a penny.
Only comment I had was either my knife was a little dull or the cut of porterhouse I had was a little tougher than my friend's Rump.
Delicious meals, great service. I don't think I have had scallops so good and well presented. For the high quality food you get, the prices are pretty good.
I also really enjoy the ambiance of the upstairs area.
Definitely right up there amongst my favorite restaurants.
I ate here recently with my parents and it exceeded my expectations! The service was fantastic, and every course was just delightful. Mum had fish of the day - loved it, Dad had a 300gm steak - loved it, I had a chicken salad - also loved it.
Highly recommended.
Been a bunch of times to all the different Rare's and they are all delicious. Started with the Pork Ribs which were excellent, fall off the bone flavoursome and a stack of meat on them... could definitely had a brushing of baste over the top just before they were served. Had the Rib Eye with the freshest chips you'll get with red wine jus and creamy garlic sauce for the chips. Cooked perfectly and tasted great. Had a d'Affinois cheese platter which was excellent in size and enough to share for 2 people. The restaurant was definitely understaffed which is not good but they did OK considering.
I have my 1st year Anniversary there. Nice restaurants, friendly staff. The food is okay, I can give a mark of 7 out of 10. Hope the beef can be more tender!
Best steak I've had in a long time. The eye fillet was cooked perfectly, the green peppercorn sauce was delightfully creamy and the complimentary bread I could eat for the rest of my days. Loved it, will be back when I'm in Melbourne next and craving a great steak.
The steak and oysters are really nice, although waiting time is a bit too long. After ordering, we waited almost 1 hour to have the first dish served.
Came here to try their $28 set lunch, heard their steak is pretty good. If you are a Liven member you get 40%off the bill Mon-Wed exclude set special menu. Their steak w mushroom sauce and side onion ring was fine and well cooked, but found their garlic prawn little overlooked. Great service, lovely ambience.. But I still prefer Meat Wine and Co set lunch and steak is also better. Or alternatively go to Rare uptown at King st.
Very nice steak house, price worthy, especially when I use a App called Liven and it help me get 40% discount which helps me save $50. Good servicing, mid-high class steak house. Definitely will come back again
it was ok.. been to their kings st outlet a few times and absolutely loved it so was expecting the same.. service was ok i guess but the steak itself was tiny (tasty though). My wife had a chicken main and she reckoned it was very salty .. Dont think we'll be going back anytime soon...
I usually go for eye fillet but tried the lunch special ($28) that's available on certain weekdays. Chose a Rump steak, garden salad as a side and Oyster Kilapatrick as the second side. Good quality meat that was cooked for perfection. Loved it!
Great food, friendly staff with good service!
If you want great steak at a very reasonable price, then this is the best place in town. The blue cheese sauce is delicious! The service is not great, but the steaks are almost flawless. Of course there are better steak houses in town, but your likely to pay triple the price.
Restaurant was nice and steak was cooked well. I had the Porterhouse Angus grain fed 200g with mash. It was superb ! My partner had chips which were cooked to perfection. Haven't come across a great steak up until now.
Service was good. First little lady that served us didn't seem like she wanted to be there but sometimes hospitality can do that. Aircon was blasting which was a little annoying but I really enjoyed the food nonetheless. Left with a full happy belly.
Admittedly I have not been to many steakhouses since moving to Melbourne and I struggle to cook a proper streak at home on the flat piece of tin Australians call a BBQ/grill. So Rare was an absolute pleasant surprise. The meat was simple, well seasoned, direct and to the point. I had no idea that Aussie's like so many different sauces with their dead cows. I particularly like the green peppercorn sauce so much that I have tried to duplicate it at home subsequently. Again, can't overstate how happy I was with my meal!!!
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND Took my dad and mum here for my dads bday. Entrees we had where the arancini balls and pan fried scallops they where fantastic. Mains where to eye filets one 300 medium rare one 400 medium and the lamb back strap medium. EVERYTHING was cooked to perfection !!! will definitely be coming back thank you
Large place with downstairs and upstairs dining. Wasn't too busy on a friday night. My friends and I ordered the 300g angus steak which was nice. However my friend's piece came out as medium rare and mine came out as medium- we both ordered medium. Anyway. I wouldn't say its nicer than Station Hotel steak though. Not as tender. The chips were cooked spendidly. The coleslaw was sadly worse than KFC coleslaw. Overall a good experience, probably won't come back when I can get a better steak closer to home.
Steak was delicious. Medium rare cooked to perfection. Loved the sauces. Also had the fried onions which was amazing! Would definitely go back.
Experience was okay, not great though. Came in a group of 6 for my boyfriends birthday. Drinks were ordered first, with my $11 wine being poured very stingy with at least 1.5cm less in the glass than the other two diners who had wine received. Four small sips and it was gone! The waitress saw me comparing it to my friends glasses and didn't offer to top up the glass, but instead had the nerve to ask me for another glass to purchase - uhhh no thanks.
200g eye fillet was delicious and cooked medium rare to perfection. My boyfriend ordered the larger eye fillet which was raw in the middle despite ordering it medium.
Other diners had the ribs which looked amazing!
Portions were very small, so after dinner we ordered dessert - sticky date pudding and flourless chocolate cake. Both were yummy, albeit sickeningly sweet.
Overall, dinner was nice but for the price I wouldn't go back.
R and I met at Hoyts for movie tonight and decided that a steak fix was in order. Have to look in a small alley to find this place. You wouldn't know this was here unless you're looking for it.Â
Although my medium well eye fillet was outstandingly good quality steak but a little undercooked, I absolutely enjoyed it with the blue cheese sauce. Pork ribs with mashed potato served with a danish cheese sauce was so tender and flavourful. The mashed potatoes were perfectly whipped and creamy. Price is reasonable based on the quality and portion size. Great wine collection.
The staff were very accommodating and did an outstanding job as they were friendly and courteous.
Would be very nice if we go there with more people. Ribs are nice. Love it. A good choice that large group go there for party. Will come back.
Greeted on arrival by a knowledgable wait staff, good wine, great steak perfectly cooked no complaints a great night, I will be back!
The ribs were a let down though. Though it was tender, it lacked flavour. It was really bland :(
It was Saturday night, Collingwood had just won the grand final rematch and we all had a little something to celebrate so we headed out with Mish and Ania to Squires Loft Steakhouse for dinner. The two level venue is tucked away in an alley, so unless you
Fantastic experience - great food - fantastic service - we will be back!. We ordered the porterhouse steak and ribs with sides of fried onions and chips. The steak was done to perfection and the ribs fall off the bone: sauce is delicious! Loved the upgrade of crockery and knives. Service was charming and attentive. Altogether a great evening! We will be back!
Best ever steak. The steak I ordered at Squires was, without a doubt, the best I've had in years. The surface was caramelised to perfection, while the interior was red, juicy and utterly delicious. Served with a generous side of oh-so-comforting thick chips, I couldn't have asked for more.
Best pork ribs in Melbourne. Friendly staff, and good atmosphere, had a bit of a long wait for the ribs, however when they arrived we all agreed, they were so worth the wait. Cooked perfectly, well done 10/10
Pork. Ribs. Get these. No Disappoint. Mmm. Pork.
Pretty happy with the service and food, nice steak well cooked,
Reliable steak house. Maybe squires loft is not as premium as top steak houses like vlados or rockpool, but it provides very reliable steaks with friendly prices, very good for business lunches
Have eaten here many times and will continue to every time I visit Melbourne. Great food, great restaurant, great for any occasion. Can't recommend enough.
Perfect! Very friendly and attentive staff, all courses 10/10. Will definitely be back!
Great place for steak, steak was cooked perfect and good choice of sauces, love the baked mushroom and feta as well.
Yes. What it lacks in decor it makes up for in greatness of steak and service. A quality place. No frills proper food done to perfection. Great for ribs as well as steak and the wine list is a solid one. Not cheap but worth it.
First time but DEFINITELY NOT the last! The steaks were cooked to perfection and the sides were amazingly tasty. The staff were attentive and the atmosphere was great. Can't wait to go back :)
Went to Rare Steakhouse on a Wednesday night to catch-up with a friend.
In Melbourne style, down an alley way off one of the little streets.
Service was great and food fantastic, though for a steakhouse minimal options and cuts though premium not a full list. Won't see marble nines here.
I ordered the most expensive steak at $100 being the Wagyu scotch fillet, which was one of the best steaks I have had. Another at the table got an eye fillet that was just as good and easier on the wallet.
The atmosphere and service was great resulting us being the last to leave.
@themajorintake on Instagram for more.
Tomahawk steak with pork BBQ ribs, a must when visiting this joint. Tasty, moist and will leave you wanting more. Cool, mid-lit cellar vibe place with friendly service and a quality wine list.
First Tomahawk experience happened last night in Melbourne at Rare Steakhouse Midtown. A rare occasion where we have enough beef eaters to finish it.
Served with Mushroom Sauce, Creamy Garlic Sauce, Steak fries and Crispy Fried Onions. Delish. Especially the charred bits on the bone, with bits of fats, so flavourful.
The Grilled chicken was abit tough but still great tasting.
Finally had some desserts too, something I haven't had much all week. The flourless chocolate cake and Sticky Date Pudding pretty much tasted the same texture wise, just one with a stronger taste of cocoa.
Service was excellent, our server was full of smiles and energetic, certainly added to the wonderful evening.
Great steakhouse in Melbourne, I rate it highly for the venue, excellent customer service and quality steaks. My brother and I treated ourselves to the 1.3kg tomahawk, and we left the restaurant belly full and very happy. Iâd say though you could share this amongst 3 people. The sauces are creamy, the chips have a great combination of soft on inside and crunchy on outside.
The guy serving us was lovely x thank you for making sure we were enjoying our meal.
Quality steaks! Very well cooked! The scallops were AMAZING!!!
Well deserved 5 stars! :)
We also ordered all of the sauces from the creamy garlic, to mushroom, but I think the best one was blue cheese sauce! Oh my god.! â€ïžâ€ïž
I love this beautiful steakhouse. Beside the nice and great customer service and fantastic atmosphere, they have one the best and yummy steak in Melbourne. Highly recommended this place, specially Angus ribs.
It's been a while since we have ventured to Melbourne given the situation. We had the opportunity to go to rare steakhouse after not having been in a while. Anyway, do yourself a favour and get on it, the food is beautiful and the service is great...
