Review Axil Coffee Roasters - Melbourne

Eric G
Great decent sized brunch / lunch cafe. Coffee was good and the staff were really friendly. Very busy on a Sunday so recommend getting in early. The Eggs Benedict was delicious.

Highly recommended this thick prawn toast! I didn’t expect it’s so amazing. Creative healthy recipe and great taste. Perfect with long black and don’t miss the greens.

Axil Coffee Roasters Hawthorn is my favourite of all the ones I have visited. Great service and beautiful food. The coffee is beautiful and the menu is extensive. Highly recommended.

A decent cafe in Hawthorn. I came here on the weekend with a friend and we ordered the fritters and baked eggs. Be mindful that there is a weekend surcharge. My friend really enjoyed her coffee and baked eggs. The corn fritters were good, however, I found them underwhelming compared to other reviews I’ve read.

Friendly and helpful staff. Great design and high quality service. The food and drinks are good. Nice place to hang out for breakfast/ lunch with friends and family

Had a late lunch at Axil-ordered the fritters and a coffee. Both were amazing! The crispy sweet potato on the side was very yummy. Nice flavours in the fritters and the coffee as always was great!

AXIL COFFEE ROASTERS – The Roastery What a lovely coffee encounter Today, just before heading out to Sydney, I went to visit Miss Mook at Axil Coffee Roasters in Hawthorns. I received a warm welcome 🤗 and a great coffee suggestions: a filter coffee, a magic, and a single origin espresso. Of course I also ordered an Aussie breakfast; 🍳 eggs on toast with a sliced avocado 🥑 [you can have it crushed too]. The Colombian 🇨🇴 filter coffee was beautiful, with a lot of depth, a lively, yet well balanced acidity, and a red wine acidity and bitterness. I liked the dark fruit notes and the tamarind flavor, very unique and pleasant. The magic 🪄 came with the seasonal house 🏡 blend: the milk was brilliantly textured, super sweet and smooth all the way, and it was poured very nicely 🦢. That is what I expect from a specialty place ❤️. The coffees from Brazil 🇧🇷, Costa Rica 🇨🇷, and Guatemala 🇬🇹 cut nicely through the milk 🥛. Well done 👍🏼. The breakfast was delicious too: I especially liked the warm eggs 🥚 on the crunchy and buttery 🧈 toast. The contrast to the cooler avocado 🥑 was a great match and the fresh lemon 🍋 rounded this breakfast up perfectly. To finish my breakfast I enjoyed a single origin espresso from Guatemala 🇬🇹: El Buho [Maria Vides], washed Caturra with notes of caramel, nectarine, peach 🍑, and citrus 🍊. How much better can you start into your day. Thank you Miss Mook for the great hospitality and lovely chat. You made my day ☀️. And thank you to Anthony, Jack, and Matt for the additional espresso cupping in your training room 😉.

Great to see Axil still surviving and thriving. Food was great, atmosphere was great, staff were great. The turmeric crepe with pork belly was yummo. Of course, the coffee was excellent.

I grabbed a take away triple shot latte from here.

The service was friendly, and my coffee was made so quickly.

I really liked the fact that I was given the option of a lid for my coffee.

My latte was perfect, super strong ... whoa hahaha and exactly what I was after. Pricewise my coffee was cheaper than some single shot lattes that I've had.

Perfect! 5/5.

Previous review January 2016

Reasonable food here, and the coffee is alright too. It's a big restaurant in a warehouse style with friendly staff. The food didn't blow me away, my bacon and eggs were ok, but I'd probably look for a less commercial place to eat next time.
Srslyfoods
This is a very popular breakfast location in a trendy area. Despite being busy the service is timely. Prices are reasonable. The menu is extensive. The food is great, they make their own coffee which is so good!

6.5/10 for me. It was a good brunch though I think this place is a little overhyped so my expectations were a little too high.
Coffee here is no doubt good! My friends ordered chai lattes which they can vouch for that it is good here!
Food: I ordered the grilled asparagus and haloumi salad. Nicely grilled asparagus and generous amount of haloumi, nicely charred too. However the salad portion itself is small and the dish overall was a little under seasoned with not much going on, so I found it bland.
My friends ordered the salmon fritters which I have to say looked and tasted amazing. The fritters was crispy and not oily, with a good amount of pumpkin hummus so the dish wasn’t too dry.
Good cafe as a coffee roaster because all the drinks here are amazing. Food wise I would say it’s just okay?¿ nothing special though so I would recommend just coming here for drinks, especially coffee
Whatsgood Melbourne
Loved their zucchini, corn & haloumi fritters w/ poached egg, avocado, crispy sweet potato, spinach & spicy relish 😋🤤

This place is truly amazing. My friend and I had a bad experience at hawthorn common next door and we thought we would try axil. It did not disappoint. The service was warm and welcoming and the food Delicious! Will definitely be back.

Great coffee and food! We had the pork belly and corn fritters. The highlight was definitely the banana hotcake which was super fluffy and thick, with chooclate icecream to complement

As always.. We walked out with no dials appointments..
Great service and great food..

This place never disappointed me

Perfect Saturday hand out 👍

Excellent Soy latte + good food = enjoyable meal
A surprisingly good place. woke up in the late Sunday morning and felt badly for brunch. didn't want to go anywhere far so randomly picked up this place. clean and nice interior was the first impression. we actually didn't feel impressed by the menu, dishes look a bit of boring from the menu. so we have ordered potato croquettes and Zucchini, corn fritters. Both of dishes are packed with flavors. unforgettably, the potato croquettes are soooooo yummmm, can't stop eating it from my partner's plate. it is just that good. We even think they should sell it on the street as a street food.

will definitely recommend to friends and going back together.
Joey Zhang
Too noisy, food is actually average level, not suprising me. Staff is too busy to smile. A little bit costy for what they provided, I know it is a popular cafe, honestly it is not worth trying.

Get the baked eggs. A quality dish that is full of flavour. Good atmosphere and vibe. Friendly staff who knowledgeable and a nice coffee. Would recommend

This place has a great atmosphere, lovely service and truly delicious food! This combination of baked eggs with a dukkah crunch was just phenomenal!!

Food : Interesting menu with unique ingredients , you will not find the usual boring options here . Both savoury and sweet options are a hit ! The red velvet pancakes are delicious and beautifully presented. Must have the croquettes whatever the specials are.
Atmosphere is rustic and friendly , helpful warm staff.

I absolutely love this place. In a ripper of a spot of Hawthorn, you can't go wrong. I love their variety on the menu and I was torn on what to get when I went here. It's just a great place for a catchup with either a large or small group. It is perfect for anyone. It's pretty trusty for me and the service is pretty quick once you've ordered.
LifestyleByLily
We had a group catch up at Axil Coffee Roasters, what a great spot for a group! The menu is great, there are lots of options to suit every kind of brekkie lover and caters for dietary requirements also. We had to wait for about 10 minutes for a table at Axil Coffee Roasters but we were happy to do so as we browsed the menu during this time. Seated in the corner by the door, we were well positioned to see so many beautiful dishes coming out of the kitchen and it made it really hard to choose a dish but we did it. As we were at Axil Coffee Roasters, of course we each ordered a coffee too.
Kurt Emery
Food not up to Melbourne cafe standards. Steak sandwich $21 - was not fresh, egg was cold, bread was rock hard and the meat tough and dry.

The second dish of spicy beans was average, nothing stand out and again had rock hard toast.
IsFoodIsGood
My trusty local.
Decent meals for decent prices.
A big space done well and a hefty variety on menu and portions.
Always come here when I know I’m going to get a good meal quickly and good for value.
Top breakfast/lunch place.
Jenny R
Great coffee and friendly staff. Fast service and an appetising menu. The space is very airy with lots of natural light, high ceilings and wooden benches and tables.
Joey
Great coffee, good food and lovely staff. The cafe is very spacious, perfect place for your weekend brunch with friends ! Would definitely go back again!

📍Location: 322 Burwood Rd, Hawthorn
🖼Ambience: Overall was a bit overcrowded hence a little noisy. They decorated the wall with artificial plant fitted on the wall and warm lighting which was good when combined with natural sunlight.
👩🏻‍🍳👨🏻‍🍳Staffs: Friendly Staffs
🥘 Food: We ordered 2 Chai Lattes and a Quince glazed bacon Steak with fried eggs, bruleed brie cheese, candied walnuts & pear chutney on Woodfrog toast.
The Chai Lattes was good and was flavoursome as expected.
The Steak was rightly cooked to perfection, it was grilled on the outside and juicy in the inside. The presentation was amazing with the fried egg on top.
I loved the combination of steak with the pear chutney as it gives the right punch of sweetness to the dish.
I felt that the cheese was a little less for the whole steak with right crunchy walnuts to it.
Will try more dishes @Axil Coffee Roasters, Hawthorn.
✅Overall: Must go!
DT
Lovely food and super friendly service. The dukkah spiced eggs were amazing and beautiful bread.

The quality of ingredients is superior too. Really enjoyed it.

They probably have one of the best coffees in Melbourne

Came here on Easter Saturday so there was the 15% surcharge :(

The coffee was smaller in size than I’d expected. I liked the taste of the coffee but I don’t think the milk they use blended well with the espresso, so I kept on having this weird after taste :/

My boyfriend got the Big Breakfast Burger: the burger tasted nice - you can’t ever go wrong with bread, chorizo, and bacon tbh! The only downside is that there wasn’t any sauce other than the tomato relish, so it did taste very salty and the flavours didn’t balance out very well. 7/10 I’d say?

I got the Quince Glazed Bacon Steak: I have to say this dish was beautiful. Bacon, in nature, is salty. But since it was glazed, it balanced out in sweet and salt perfectly! The pear chutney and the toast was also very tasty! When you eat all the bacon, egg, chutney, and toast all at once, the flavours taste amazing in your mouth! Loved this dish! 8.5/10!

Overall a great experience, except for the price since there was a surcharge 😅

A very nice find in Hawthorne. Wasn't aware these guys have about 6 outlets across Melbourne, but was pleasantly surprised by the busy atmosphere, food and quick service. I would seek them out again. Highly recommend the breaky burger and Zucchini fritter with poached egg.
Scott Rennie
I've eaten here a couple of times since moving to Hawthorn and have to say was disappointed on both occasions. Dishes were over-priced and poor quality compared to what you can get locally. Service was pretty poor on both occasions, they don't have enough serving staff on for the number of tables. There's much better in the surrounding streets, they need to do better to attract people back when there are so many good places around.
Vanessa
With a modern and clean interior, this cafe has a big space inside with many seating options divided into three narrow aisles. The ceiling is super high and there’s greenery spread throughout the place to help freshen and liven the atmosphere. There’s also outdoor seating which is pet-friend too.

The coffee was tasty while the tea was pretty standard. The smashed avocado was delicious and very well-balanced in flavour. The portion I felt, was right but the price was a little on the high end considering it didn’t include the poached egg (extra $3).

Prompt service. A tad difficult to get a waiter’s attention. Friendly staff. Lovely environment. Great smashed avocado and delicious coffee.
Niveditha Vathsangam (Niv)
Some of the best coffee I have had in Melbourne. Great food options as well but it is the coffee that keeps me coming back. Really looking forward to the cafe opening up at Melbourne Central.

Buzzing as I suspect it usually is, with great coffee and an attentive crew. The food was great, my beetroot croquets with crepe fresh and eggs were yummy. I would have marked higher, but charging me for the smoked salmon I declined is wrong.

7/10
The visit to the mother house didn't disappoint, and Axil Coffee Roasters delivers good coffee, great food and a genuinely-friendly fast service in very modern and stylish settings. I liked their coffee, but I really enjoyed the croquette dish I had. It was well balanced, a good-sized portion and with a great mix of textures and flavors and eggs perfectly poached. Menu was a bit disappointing regards variety and lack of specials, but beyond that, I really enjoyed my visit.

This place has some real strong flavoured dishes which I love because not a lot of brunch places have. The spicy benetic sauce is amazing, probably because I love spicy mayo and this is similar.
Gaetano
Great place, fantastic food, fantastic coffee, great service. Around lunch it's always full, always happy to come here and always rewarded with consistency

The best cafe I've ever visited in Melbourne..
Many options for brunches, gnocchi was very delicious, zucchini fritters wad good, French toast was the best..
Everything I've tried there never disappointed me..
Always have good chats with my friends there.
Staffs are friendly, foods come quick..
Love this place😍😍

Disappointing experience. Coffee was excellent, however the meal was a let down. We ordered The smashed avo for $19 which tasted just like basic bland avo on toast, and the fritters which was cold by the time they got to us. Popular, busy place but our experience was more than underwhelming.
Melbourne Food Monkeys
Overall, a lovely brunch place. All the food is above average, but there isn’t anything outstanding. Would recommend the beetroot croquette and waffles, although the menu often changes.
Service and ambience are great.
Galakto
I went there for a table for one. Unfortunately they had no idea how or where to seat me. I have been here before with my family, and thought they were a bit aloof at that time. Waitresses didn’t know what tables were available and didn’t really care about me as a customer. ... I just walked out. Can’t recommend them to anyone.
Laine Lee
Great coffees for coffee lovers. They serve good filter ones. Food was good too.
Clean, chic and comfortable cafe. Staffs are friendly and polite.

Beautiful plating, salmon is very fresh, fish skin cooked very crispy. But a little bit fishy, love the cucumber. Gentle service, atmosphere is good.

Axil Coffee beans are always fresh and roasted light to medium.
They have choice of coffee beans for different type of coffee makers.
All staff have knowledge of coffee and very helpful to choose coffee of the day.
They likely to have fresh citrus fruits or flowerness flavours.
I usually try to choose caramel or nutty flavour if available in strong latte.

When I came first time which was last year, the main barista explained us really well about the culture of coffee. (Thank you Anthony)

I took my family recently and had lunch again. All dishes were presented well and tasted good.
Jayne Jackson
A tasty menu and good place to catch up.

The cafe is spacious and can accommodate a lot of people. I arrived just after 7.30 am for a breakfast meeting and found the place to be far from empty.

The service was prompt and attentive, the menu had lots of delicious things to tempt me but ultimately my guest and I went for the Smashed avocado w/Meredith feta, mint, parsley and Murray River sale and lemon on pumpkin grain toast .. and poached egg. A light and tasty start to the day.

The coffee was good but didn't have the smooth taste that I'd expect from a place that specializes in coffee.

Food: 3.5* .. tasty food prepared with care and quality and lots of other tasty looking things on the menu
Coffee: 2.5* OK but could have been much better especially for a place that prides itself on good coffee.
Service: 3* Friendly and attentive
Ambiance 3.5* A good place to catch up without feeling squished.

First time trying Axil Coffee Roasters. Love the interior design, with the green and gold, minimalistic design, very modern. We tried the smashed ago with added poached egg, the slow cooked beef brisket with rosemary salted potato fries along with hot chocolate and the special San Cayetano El Salvador coffee. The beef brisket burger was much more exciting than the smashed ago, especially with the rosemary thick cut potato chips. Excellent portion size, we were very full when we left.☺

Came here to try the red velvet pancakes but unfortunately the menu has changed, lucky there was another sweet treat to try - the cherry ripe waffle. The flavours were delicious however a little part of me wouldn’t mind another waffle underneath, I do feel they are a little stingy with the quantity. Coffee was pretty good and service was wonderful, worth the 20minute wait to be seated? Mmmm probably not for me.

Ordered
------------------------
Drinks:
1. Single Origin Long Black - It wasn't the highlight of the meal but it was passable.
2. Iced Coffee - First time ordering this in Melbourne and it was delightful (ice cream was great)

Food:
1. Baked Egg with Pumpkin Bread - The bread was delicious. The flavors of the baked egg dish itself tasted great and the eggs weren't overcooked.
2. Smoked Salmon on Sesame Bagel with Salsa Verde Eggs - Deconstructed bagel. The salmon and bagel themselves tasted great with everything and on its own. The salsa verde eggs were a bit mild for our taste. I would recommend stacking each bite with every element of the dish so you get a balanced flavor.

Food is always amazing, coffee is incredible and the staff are always so friendly! The atmosphere is also amazing - even when it's super busy on weekends it still feels really laid back and spacious. I come here pretty frequently and love it every time.
Ferry Gondo
Delightfully fulfilling lunch here. Had the modern version of Salmon and Cream Cheese Bagel. A deconstructed Salmon Bagel so to speak. Lavish and delicate cured salmon over a bed of fluffy scrambled eggs. The bagel had a distinct sesame punch and super crunchy. The mountain or fresh pickled veggies on top provide a fresh relief. The cream cheese added extra flavor profile to it.

Top it off with velvety hot choc. Pleasure.
I know Father’s Day is a busy day but if you don’t take bookings at least give an accurate idea of wait time. Don’t care how good the food and coffee is, it’s ruined by the triple wait time
Cold Brew Please
Don’t come here on a Monday. I think they have a weekend hangover. The cold drip saved this review from one star..... although honestly - they could have served it on a small plate given that you have a glass with ice and the cold drip in a little bottle. I tried the scrambled verde eggs with smoked salmon and it disappointed universally. Half a bagel which is just a bread roll nothing like the consistency of a hard boiled NY bagel and the salsa verde was mixed through the scrambled eggs that were very dry and quite tasteless. The whole thing lacked love as do the staff. It was like pulling teeth to order and nor did anyone even venture back to offer me a second coffee. Also smoked salmon is so nineties - any establishment worth a second look offers a house cured salmon. I won’t be back.

Pleasant atmosphere, not too long a wait...however the mosquito on my eggs indicated they dont wash the salad leaves. It was replaced immediately, but nothing else said.
Food was good, but not great.
Hell's Kitchen
Great experience and delicious food! This place never fails to make a good brunch experience
The waiters were very friendly and the wait time was around 5-10 mins on a busy saturday morning
Leila
Excellent coffee. Excellent food. What’s left to say?

I tried the eggs on toast (scrambled, obviously) and the pancakes. The eggs were lush, like silk, and the sourdough bread proved to be the perfect buttery vessel carrying the dish forward. The pancakes were also good, the various flavors surprisingly melded well together.

The place itself was very spacious and light. All in all, a great cafe’ for a spot of brunch on a Sunday afternoon.
A Choong
Every dish we ordered was yum.
Fritters were light and packed with flavour from the relish. The sweet potato crisp topping were amazing.
Chestnut waffle with seasonal mushrooms and truffle mascarpone was sensational. The sweet dishes were equally impressive. Well done waffles and pancakes with beautiful house made sorbet and ice cream. The wait staffs were efficient and enthusiastic. Coffee was beautiful.
Joanne Liu
Great food and service. The place was packed when I arrived here, but the experience was totally worth it; I loved every minute of it. The waiters were so courteous to us and recommended the best dishes to us. My lunch was super enjoyable- this was so long ago that I've forgotten what I ordered :(. This brunch place is a MUST if you are in melbourne because the food, although a little pricey, is 100% worth it.
Dani Boudville
Always busy with great coffee. Some of the food can be hit and miss but steak sandwiches are nearly always an excellent choice. Expect to wait for takeaway during busy periods.
Renee @thehappyorganicgirlau
I only had limited time, but popped into Axil Coffee Roasters in order to try a coffee. After all, a roaster surely makes good coffee? I didn’t need to wait long to be served and staff were incredibly friendly. Coffee was good, I also ordered a tea which was different but enjoyable. Next stop, trying the food here - which sounds delicious!

Axil Coffeee Roasters located in Hawthorn is one of my favourite cafe. However, it can be hard to find parking near the cafe.
Staff are friendly and attentive, and inside was spacious and cosy.
Love their Zucchini, corn & haloumi fritters and Red velvet pancakes!! There are some more food which attract me.
Their coffee also was good. Highly recommend.

Great place for a brunch with friends. Love their coffee and other beverages. Food is on the expensive side but cannot complain about the taste and a wonderful experience you get. Definitely worth it!

Originally planned to go to muharam cafe today and there was a huge line outside on the coldest wettest Melbourne day this year so far. What is wrong with those people?? Anyway, we turned around and web be to axil coffee roasters and we're so glad we did. Quickly seated, quickly served and that was with it being fairly busy. As I've already had the red velvet hotcakes here, I went savoury this time with the crumpets, ham hock, eggs, kale and hollandaise sauce. It was delicious. All the food here is nicely presented. Can definitely recommend this place as as a dependable option.
Mary D
I went there because it’s very famous so I thought I should try!!
Ordered espresso, it’s good coffee but it wasn’t my taste.( cause for me , a bit strong sour taste).
Maybe I should try latte next time!!
Khyati Raval
Nice cafe for breakfast! Staff are friendly and ambience is nice. Love their white peony tea. Food is nice and portions size good. I would go there again and again. Menu has many choices for vegetarians. Coffee nice however nothing exciting considering the fact that they are coffee roasters

I would visit again for sure
ManFromMelbourne
Excellent service, however the food is hit and miss. I'm not fussy about coffee at all so no comment there.

The steak sandwich is quite nice, and the side of onion rings are so crispy!

Second visit I ordered the turmeric and chilli scrambled eggs with spiced lentils, pickled eggplant, minted yoghurt & flat bread.

This dish was as bland as they come. Not enough minted yogurt. The flatbread was not fresh and was probably out of a packet. You could tell it was defrosted.

Food is not cheap here; I'm unsure if the consistency is worth the risk of returning.

Axil has several locations throughout the city, but we stumbled upon the location in Hawthorn. The cafe space is pretty huge, and it feels very bright and open. We were there right in the middle of the week during lunch time and it was busy. Nonetheless, we were quickly greeted and before we knew, a waitress taking our drink order. We got a long black and chai tea latte; the chai could have used a bit more spice, but the coffee was excellent.

Following drinks, we got our meal (to share) - the baked eggs, topped with spicy peperonata, dukkah, feta, chorizo (added), & pumpkin toast. This dish was both vibrant and very flavorful! My ONLY piece of feedback would be on the sauce itself, as it could have been just a bit thicker. Otherwise, it was absolutely delicious. The texture and nuttiness of that dukkah, with the creaminess of that feta, the dish was well balanced. I must say the star of the dish was the side of pumpkin toast. It was SO incredible and was a nice vessel for the eggs & accompaniments.

I would definitely recommend a stop! We would love to come back and try the infamous red velvet pancakes - a suggestion of many folks we've run into throughout our time here in Melbourne.

First time I’ve been to Axil and I was hangry af and holy moly, the zucchini and corn fritters with bacon, spinach, avocado, poached egg, relish and sweet potato crisps on top were AMAZING. I couldn’t eat it all but it was so delicious. The coffee was also amazing. Definitely coming back!

Sat outside waiting for a waiter/waitress , no one had come out so I proceeded to a young female waitress after waiting outside for over 10min. I asked if we could get some menus outside , instead of getting menus she went to clean a table and waited another 5min so we decided to leave . Management at the cafe isn’t great , this isn’t the first time this has happened . Will not be going back there again.

Looveee the ambiance of this place. What a beautiful place with friendly staff. It’s located just a short walk from Glenferrie Station so it’s easy to reach. We ordered the 2 most favourites dished, which are the red velvet pancake and the zucchini. I must say now I know why everybody loves this dishes. It tastes heavenly🤩🤩 I’m about to give it a 5 stars for the zucchini, however my boyf thinks the red velvet pancake is too sour for him. So 4 stars it is

One of my go to cafes. Been here a few times and always leave satisfied. The most recent time I got the crispy pork and beef brisket. They were both fabulous! I had the the beef brisket and I loved it. The service was prompt and welcoming. I love the cafe design and layout. It's definitely a place to try. Il be back!

The red velvet pancakes is what brought me here and they are also the reason why I will constantly come back. Great service , great atmosphere great food ❤️👍🏽

Been here a few times now & always had delicious meals with friendly service; and delicious coffee of course! Highly recommend if you’re ever near Hawthorn station/Glenferrie Road

I went there on sunday morning. The food was super good!I ordered chai latte & coffe (of course) as an entree, & thrn french toast, egg benedict waffle and red velvet pancake. However the pancake was a bit dissapointing for me. The place was a bit hectic and crowded, but we get the table easily. The ambience was nice for family and friends to hang around. Overall it was a satisfying food experience for me. #BHAsFoodDiary

Axil Hawthorn is a gorgeous venue, with an open plan and simple decor complete with plenty of greenery. Axil seats a large amount of people, and offer big tables to cater for larger groups. The outside seating can be deceiving, as it is quite understated.

The menu is full of all the classics, as well as plenty of original dishes, including 3-4 vegan options and plenty of vegetarian options. I find the menu quite reasonably priced compared to similar eateries around Hawthorn. The food is always tasty, well presented and fast. The team at Axil are obviously very well trained; they are always attentive, polite and helpful, which is much appreciated. Axil are coffee specialists and have a roastery on location. Perfect, well made coffee. Thanks guys!

Came here on a Monday morning and was quickly greeted and seated at a table. Service is great, friendly staff and food arrived promptly.

Do:
- Try the zucchini fritters
- try their coffee

Don’t: expect “white” lightning for Instagram pictures - lighting is quite yellow-ish (unless sitting in front of the window)

Overall a good experience and would return
The red velvet pancakes are simply to die for there’s a great mix of flavours in there that work so well. I hope this item stays on the menu as a staple, the coffee is also one of the better ones in town
Wedders
Coffee is good, food is good but be careful when ordering the steak sandwich for it is not a steak sandwich, it is basically steak, egg and salad on top of a grilled cheese sandwich and must be eaten with a knife and fork. The service is friendly but Australian service staff do not seem to understand the concept of waiting until everybody at the table has finished eating before they clear the used plates. Our server literally took my wife’s plate whilst she was using her napkin....and this was after my plate was cleared minutes earlier. It’s really poor service and extremely rude. Let everyone at the table finish their meals before you cleat the table.

Love this place! The vibe was chill and the interior was dope. The food was even better, really filling and delicious, their iced mocha was one of the better ones I’ve had. 10/10 would recommend

Although this cafe has a nice interior, it’s rather dark inside and the atmosphere somewhat impersonal. The coffee was delicious (although unfortunately not served in large cups), but the food was a disappointment. I had the fritters which lacked flavor and crispiness. The french toast looked better in the menu than on the plate being soaked in an unconvincing chocolate sauce.

I’ve always been impressed with Axil’s coffee and food selection. They regularly update their menu with specials on weekends. Ever since they fixed their air condition - it’s finally visit-able when temperature soars above....25 degrees (previously I had a rule of not visiting Axil when it’s 25+... anyone who’s been there would know what I mean)!!

TLDR - great food, great dessert, great coffee, ok service, worth visiting
Rose
Visited on a weekday. Service was very good, nice environment, great coffee and the food was excellent and hard to choose a dish as the menu was impressive. We had the savoury waffles (amazing!) and the corn fritters (also delicious). Took some pastries away with us and they were also very yummy! Will definitely return.
Laura K
So it was lovely, honestly a nice breakfast and coffee was smooth and delightful. I ordered a cappuccino and I guess that means latte now because it was pretty much a latte haha. Still smooth and delicious.

5 of us swung by Axil on Saturday and we were lucky to be seated quickly (around 10am). It did get busier while we were there but try your luck! The food was served pretty quickly too. We tried their single origin coffee special but it was dissapointing. I expect the quality of their coffee to be really high but we ordered 2 of the exact same latte (same milk) and it was so different in colour and in taste (picture featured). One was much stronger tasting than the other. The taste wasn't bad (pretty subtle, tasted hints of chocolate) but it was the fact that they were so different - shouldn't it be the same consistency? I ordered their corn fritters which was delicious. The haloumi really makes a difference and adds so much more flavour. I also enjoyed the generous serving of avocado and the poached egg made the dish less dry. I was really impressed, super full and satisfied. I'd highly recommend it. My friends who tried the crumpets weren't too impressed by their dish though. Again, very generous but it lacked in flavour. You start to find yourself getting sick of it. The chives flavour wasn't strong and the scrambled eggs were nice but the salmon was quite fishy tasting (not like your usual fresh subtle tastes, more like the not fresh fish can taste). Overall I had a great experience and really enjoyed what I personally ordered. I did rate Axil less because of the coffee inconsistency and the crumpet dish.

LIT!: we started off with savoury and then went to their sweet dishes. What was amazing was the tomato purée dip as it went so well with the toast, eggs, mushrooms and sausage. Don't forget to order coffee!

NOT SO LIT: the waffle dish was a little too sweet for my liking

Can't believe I haven't reviewed this place when I actually come by for a coffee almost everyday. Good coffee and good food. Choices are limited but they don't disappoint. Definitely a must visit if you're in Hawthorn and looking for a Cafe.
The down side is this one waitress that looks like she really doesn't wanna be there, no smiles or greetings... Quite rude when you're paying too. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Good ambiance, waitresses that pout like their on a runway and speak with the same disdain. I decided to keep it simple and ordered Red Velvet Pancakes, to my surprise the pancakes had no sugar in them....... at all rendering them inedible. I suggested to the waitress that their was something wrong with them to be told that no one else has complained and then she just walked away. To say I was a little surprised would be an understatement. As we left and had to pay for my inedible sugarless pancakes my friend was overcharged and told she had misread the price on the menu. After paying, she then checked the menu and was subsequently refunded after presenting it to a second staff member. Such potential but so let down.

Good coffee here and decent food, had the had the house made crumpets and salmon. The crumpets were pretty thick but tasted good and there was nothing special about the salmon pieces or the scrambled eggs that came with it.

Fairly big place with nice ambience. Went on a Sunday at 12:30pm, and was surprised that we didn't have to wait long for our table at all. We got served instantly, staff was friendly and helpful as well.
Got the braised lamb salad, mixed grilled breakfast, and their specials for the day (beetroot pancake with salmon and poached egg)
It was good overall; liked the beetroot pancake especially, the pancake was moist, and the egg were well poached. Coffee was good too! Definitely will be back again to try their famous fritters!
Situated just a 5 min walk from Glenferrie station, Axil coffee Roasters looks like any other standard brunch restaurant in Melbourne.

Within, the decor feels very familar: wooden tables and open spaced. But what makes this restaurant different, is it's ability to create a sense of outdoor coziness from within. Hundreds of pot plants are placed around the restaurants, creating both intimacy for it's diner and an earthy nature feel.

These senses of freedom and comfortness also flow into the beautifully plated dishes and creative drinks.

We started off with a chai latte, that was perfectly poured. A subtle spicyness blending with the sweet smoothness of milk tea. Something which has dramatically changed my view on the beverage, and may even become a staple in my future brunch adventures (retirement time for the go to flat white).

Our first dish was the Roasted rare beef with the potatoe waffle. Normally I would forbid the combination of a staple carb with the sweetness of a waffle, but for some strange reason the flavours melded perfectly. The beef was well executed, finely roasted and juices flowing on taste. Poached eggs were cooked perfectly blending holistically with the creamy hollandaise. Crispy parnips were added to allow for a crutchy texture in each bite.

The mixed grilled breakfast was our second dish, similarly well executed and portioned. The krasky sausage did seem to fall more on the average side, it would of been interesting to have a spicy variation to give the dish a real kick. Bacon was excellent (when is it never?) with each bite savouring the fatty bursts swimming in their in house worcestershire sauce. The fried eggs were a tad overcooked, but not enough to distract me from how well the rest of the dish's components were executed.

My final verdict: This is a go to staple bruncher, which has consistenty high service and a intimate dining area. The food is of high quality and you can be assured that no dissapointment can come from dining here. Will defintely be returning on another weekend.
Let’s begin with service: staff are so rude. Even at 2:30pm, we weren’t attended to a solid 15 minutes after we were seated. They would literally drop our plates of food onto the table without acknowledging our presence.

Coffee and food were good. But not good enough to make up for the unfriendly service.

Great coffee as I visited their Flinders lane branch often. My first attempt to eat there. Over-prices foo. I had the quinea flafel.with salmon it didn't come with bread that was 6$ for 2 slices of toast. The flafels were oily on the outside and lacked seasoning. Nothing on the plate matched such an odd combination.
Very noisy inside. Don't bother with food just have the coffee.. disappointed customer

Went here for coffee and breaky last week. Coffee was great, atmosphere was nice although very busy there was great service. I ordered the corn fritters and they were delicious. My friend got the baked eggs and loved them too :)

i'm sorry to say but really not a big fan of the steak sandwich and the coffee. Services and presentation of the food are fabulous though. Truffle chips come with the sandwich is my fav amongst all. Worth a try.

Points for: excellent coffee & wide menu
Dine Time: weekend brunch

It can get a little hectic over weekend brunch, but not impossible to get a table.
While you graze over the menu, grab a coffee - I usually get a strong latte, and it's well balanced and robust.

The baked eggs sat perfectly in a deep, rich tomato sauce, which a little bit of a background heat. The fetta offered a cheesy/earthy contrast, and the pumpkin grain toast was lightly buttered and toasted. Everything I expected in a delicious, modern shakshuka!

I loved this place before I even stepped in. Its absolutely beautifully styled. The industrial styling with greenery a winner! Staff super attentive and we were seated immediately. I loved the vibe of this place it was playful. Knowing this place specialised in coffee no surprises that the coffee was on point. Great menu it was quirky and a bit of everything. Dishes were absolute perfection every spoon full

Welcoming atmosphere friendly staff but slow service. Roughly 10 minutes to take our order. It was busy with cool vibes. Coffee was good and my Zucchini corn fritters were healthy and delicious. Great menu . I Will be back.

Pretty busy happening spot. Coffee is a good quality but could be warmer to personal preference. The bites to eat are pretty tasty to enjoy with a drink.

On a bright Saturday morning, my partner and I decided to drop of Axil to have brunch. Upon arrival, a staff member came to greet us and put us in a waiting list. She ushered us to wait at the "waiting area" in front of the coffee counters - the waiting area was a good touch, there are a few stools around for us to sit and you can grab a coffee first before you are seated.

After waiting for about 15 mins, we were seated. For coffees, we had the chai latte and latte- the latte at Axil has never failed us, it is always so smooth and has been roasted optimally (it's easy to over roast coffee beans). The chai latte was creamy and frothy the way I like it :)

So I ordered the baked eggs and my partner ordered the zucchini corn fritters as recommended by the staff.

BAKED EGGS
- the baked eggs had a slightly runny tomato sauce without being overly salty (I find that's the case for many cafes)

ZUCCHINI & CORN FRITTERS
- crispy, flavoursome, healthy and delicious. The crusty texture of the fritters together with optimal sauces smashed avo made the dish amazing

COFFEE
- rich, smooth and leaves an after woody note

Rating: 4.5/5
