Review Rare Steakhouse Downtown - Melbourne

Layer on the sauce and roll out the beef, has very nice trimmings for a hearty night’s meal. The soft lighting and modern decor in this classy Aussie restaurant gives a fabulous casual feel. Great pork rib and steaks, cooked well for well down steak.

Posting on behalf of my partner as he is the meat eater. His 200 gram steak was very good, and he is very picky on steaks. As a vego, would be good to have more healthy vegetarian options but i get that it is a steak restaurant. Only bread option was garlic bread available would have wanted just plain bread and butter option. The sauce and sides seemed pretty high in price - $5 per small sauce tub to add to $50 steak. The Greek salad was delicious! The service was okay, waited a while for menu I had to ask for one. Ambiance was good, beautiful restaurant. Odd choice of music last night 😂🎶 techno, deep house vibes while eating a fancy steak anyone? 😅

I ate the 300 gram grass fed scotch fillet with chips and blue cheese sauce and the trio of sorbet for dessert. The steak was cooked perfectly and very tender, the chips also cooked perfectly and very hot, the blue cheese sauce was very strong so I didn't use much. The trio of sorbet was very refreshing and great finish to the meal. The staff were friendly and efficient the service prompt and courteous. The food along with a Corona beer came to a total of $77.50, if you like a good steak give this place a try.

Lets start with food, The quality of food is great. Everything were fresh. We ordered entrees for two ($40), which was good and tasty. Was a little bit expensive. Our steak was perfectly cooked. However It needed more salt and paper. It was also a little bit sweet, which was weird for me and my partner. The atmosphere was also okay. Staff were friendly, polite and welcoming. Its a 4.5 restaurant, however there is no 4.5 so I give 4. Its not 5stars because I expect more when u pay $$$.

One of the best steaks I've ever had. Ordered the tomahawk steak - it was cooked very well (was med-rare) and I loved the char on the steak. The pepper and creamy garlic sauces were delicious. We indulged and also had the tasting platter to start - calamari was very soft and fried well, mushroom tasted nice and the sausage was flavourful. Would definitely come back on another special occasion.

Such attentive service. Never have I had such an amazing sticky date pudding which arrived with hot butterscotch sauce and a pudding that was so indulgent and decadent. The steaks were quite tender and came with a choice of potato mash or chips.

Best service ever! I was served a medium steak even if I ordered rare, and they did everything to correct the situation. They were very apologetic and gave me the right steak. On top of that, they gave us complimentary dessert, which was so delicious! It was flourless chocolate cake, and it was the best one I've tasted. Service staff is very gracious and attentive. Would return just for the service. Steak is also good! And the blue cheese sauce is amazing. Mashed potato could use more seasoning however

We were a party of 10. The staff were super friendly and very helpful, from front of house, to wait staff. The food was delicious, as usual; high quality, and served as requested. We had a lovely night and would very much recommend Rare Steakhouse Downtime if you are looking for a venue.

Nice menu with a wide variety of meat, including grass fed, non gmo choices. Excellent meat, friendly and efficient staff, good wine selection

We visited this venue last night and here is what I thought....

Cons: Red Wine Jus was bland and lacked flavor

Pros: Meat cooked to perfection, mash was smooth, wine was delicious!!!, staff were friendly, atmosphere was inviting, olives were delicious and of a great portion, but the BEST PART was our Bloody Mary oysters. Oh, My, God - they were amazing!!!!
Chris
Good steak and decent wine list. Has been a long standing go to. Reasonable value; good personable service. Decor could do with an update upstairs.

Best restaurant in Melbourne! … ordered a lamb cutlet for Entrée and two medium and medium rare porterhouse steaks … the delivery was exceptional and the staff was professionally performed! … this was one of the best experiences my partner and I had in years!

I went there for the steak and a work meeting... it delivered flawless, quality produce grilled perfectly... sides an excellent match. Decent wine list, unobtrusive but attentive service. Nuff said.

I ordered steak that medium...
But, I got well done one....

Except that thing ok.
Service. Clean . Good interior...
Bit, annoyed the water and waitress come to too many time to asked that everything ok....
That too much..

Food is a bit average. My ribs are too burnt and it’s not soft enough that it slides off from the bone. But one thing to appreciate is that they do have very nice sauce.

What an amazing place! Best steak place I have been too, fantastic food great service. The waitress that took. Are of our table was so lovely and cheerful. We had a birthday girl and the kitchen helped put together candles & a happy birthday message. So great full for that night. Thank you definitely will be back .

In terms of the quality of the steaks: It is very disappointing comparing to Rare Steakhouse Uptown. I ordered a medium rare T-bone steak but half of the steak turned out very rare(see attached photo). One of my friends also ordered the same thing and had the same issue. His stomach was upset after a while.

In terms of the service of the waitstaff: I really appreciated the ones who looked after us attentively and passed the feedback to management after knowing there was a quality issue.

In terms of how the management team deals with the feedback: They advise it is normal that T-bone steaks tend to be more rare the closer you get to the bone. But in fact, almost HALF of the steak was too rare. The part closer to the bone of the T-bone steak I had in Uptown was perfectly cooked. With that being said, we wonder if Rare Steakhouse Downtown has different standard of medium rare comparing to their sister restaurant. Also, after we have let the management team know my friend felt sick after consuming the steak, they questioned us on how much we knew about food poisoning. This is not a method of making a customer feel more assured and is downplaying any responsibility from the matter.

Came to Rare Steakhouse Downtown for Valentine’s Day and had a great experience!
We had the Valentine’s set course for the night including shared entree, main and dessert.
The food came out quickly, and everything was delicious.
To top everything off, the service was also 10/10 with very friendly and approachable staff.

We were craving some steak so we decided to go get some steak at Rare Steakhouse Downtown. The restaurant had a very chilled atmosphere but still sophisticated with the dimly lit lights.

We made a last minute booking for 8:30pm and the place was still pretty packed. We started off with garlic bread. I love garlic bread but this garlic bread wasn’t the best. I hardly could taste the garlic!

We ordered the scotch fillet grain fed Black Angus and the eye fillet. The steak comes with chips, mash or a salad. I chose to have mine with chips.

We waited quite a while for our dishes. The moment I cut through my meat, my heart sank!!! The steak was medium and I asked for medium rare. It was really chewy, it wasn’t one but tender and I was extremely disappointed at this stage. My partner’s steak was cooked borderline medium rare. It’s quite sad that they cook steak all day but can’t perfect two medium rare steaks! I really enjoyed there mushroom sauce! It was nice and creamy and went very well the the steak. Always a match made in heaven. I also tried their creamy garlic sauce and it wasn’t as good however my partner enjoyed the creamy garlic sauce more than the mushroom sauce. The chips were average.

For the price, I was hoping it would be a lot better. The steak of overcooked, service was quite slow and I left feeling quite unsatisfy to be honest.

Charges top prices, but worse than my local pub!

A big group of us visited last night expecting high quality steaks but were hugely disappointed - the service was good, the chips were good, the mushroom sauce was good … but the steaks themselves were poorly cooked and poor quality.

Sorry to say this but my local pub does a way better job on a porterhouse steak than them at half of their price.

Steaks took more than an hour to be served.
My porterhouse steak was came out lukewarm and chewy - definitely not a grain-fed grade.
My partner and friends ordered T-bone steak medium-rare, but half of the steak (near the bone) was in fact so rare it was unpleasant to eat. One of us advised the waitress of the inconsistency, but chef told us it is NORMAL that the area near the bone to be rare… however, our experience of T-bone steak at their sister restaurant Rare Steakhouse Uptown and places who cooked it right did not have this issue – so why can’t they cook it the way we ordered?

After hearing the waitress comments, my partner was too nice to complain, so - even though half the T-bone steak was rare and chewy - he insisted in finishing it as we had paid $46!

This is by far the worst dining experience my partner & I have encountered during recent years – low quality, poorly cooked overpriced steaks….we will not visit Rare Steakhouse Downtown again.

It really have to say that this experience is not so well.

The oysters are really fishy, and I’m really considering whether are over date...

The eye fillet is average but the medium scotch fillet is definite over cooked.

Overall won’t recommend to you

Been here a few times now, steaks are always cooked to perfection & service is always on point, would definitely recommend this place to friends & family.

What a fabulous place! Surrounded by old blue stone bricks, polished wooden floor boards and cast iron finishes. The decor is immaculate in this place. If you love your meat like I do, you won’t be disappointed with the food, service or drinks here. Loved every minute we spent celebrating dads birthday. The lady was incredibly attentive and when mentioned it was Dad's special day they came out with a little plaque for him as well - attention to details and going the extra mile is what makes a family dinner transition to an amazing experience. I can think of a few people who I have to bring here. See you guys again soon!

+ Great service, delicious food, well poured drinks
- Ambiance (music) could be played to a bit more advantage of the space.

Soooo nice. luv this place!the steak tastes tender and juicy, the espresso martini is lovely... nice single table enjoying the moment by myself!

Really enjoyed my experience at the Rare Steakhouse Downtown, the food was superb and the staff were amazing.
Ordered the grilled lamb cutlets which melted in my mouth. It tasted like heaven! As well as the eye fillet steak and the warm flourless chocolate cake. Our server Taylor, was absolutely amazing! She was very attentive and the best service I’ve come across. She was not only very knowledgeable on the dishes such as recommendations on the cuts of meat and what sides would pair well. She also suggested to share the cake between my partner and I as the cake is quite dense. We really appreciated her warning and her service.
Definitely will be coming back again not only due to the food, but for the amazing service!!
Really Bad Service! Full of racists among the waiters / waitresses. They just kept hastening me to finish the meal in order to have me given the table as quick as possible. Totally the most horrible experience in Australia.

Fantastic steak place with a great selection of meats, such as Rump, T-Bone, Eye fillet, Porterhouse and Scotch Fillet in an angus cut, pasture fed, Wagyu marble, dry-aged or grain fed with sizes ranging between 200-500grams of meat. A lot of more expensive places in Melbourne who do not serve a steak quite like this place. Highly recommend the medium-rare eye fillet. My father had the T-Bone with the thick chips and he loved it.

Staff attentiveness is 5/5 and they really know all about their steaks so if the menu confuses you they will make you feel at ease. Highly recommend a red wine to go with the steak, or a scotch on the rocks. Amazing place, great décor and staff. Definitely coming back!

This is possibly my first 5 star rating for a place in Melbourne!
I’m just speechless about this place.... I would like to add, that I do not add Beef... But the lamb, chicken and Pork dishes are possibly the best I’ve had, all my life. My next adventure here will be the Kangaroo!

Let’s begin with the place..... The restaurant from outside has a stone exterior and a slightly dark feel to it, as you enter, the interiors have a darkish tone too... And the first thing you see, are their wine selection. I don’t think the venue impressed me on the first go, but then.... as you look at the Menu and the wine list.... the transformation begins!

The selection of meat, the cooking, the presentation, the wine and other drinks, the sides and above all the service is perfect!

My friends chose their stakes Medium and rare.... I went for the lamb cutlets that were medium and another friend went for a pork ribs.... The other meats looked inviting, but my plate in particular was the talk of the table. 4 beautifully placed lamb cutlets, on a bed of buttery potato mash, surrounded by the luscious red sauce..... Seasoning.... All this gorgeously beautiful food, covered in thin slivers of golden sweet potato chips.

The first bite, I cut a piece of meat, dipped it in the sauce and took some mash with sweet potato chips in one nice bite!!!!! Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... as my taste buds enjoyed the complex flavours, I sipped on my Merlot ( Recommend by the house) and the flavour union was completed!!!!

I’d highly recommend booking in advance and please ask the staff for a perfect pairing of your beverage!

Very reliable steak restaurant full of corporates from The Rialto. Every time I have been my steak has been perfect. Service can be slow in Friday’s.

Went here for my 25th bday dinner with the family, booked via zomato. Great staff so friendly and attentive, great steaks, drinks and desserts!

I got the grain fed yearling 300gr it was amazing!! Love the sauce and the sides. I left satisfied! The place is decorated nicely and oozes comfort which I appreciate. Their menu variety is amazing. There’s a lot of great options, and i could guarantee that they’re all amazing. Got the sticky date pudding and creme brûlée for dessert! AMAZING! Love everything!

Will recommend this place to my family and friends!

It turned out to be quite a social week for me, hence had the chance to try another new restaurant that is just one block away from work.

What a great value set lunch it was! At $40, you get an entree, main and drink (wine, beer, soft drink or coffee). For entree, I had the salt and pepper calamari that was cooked just right and paired beautifully with the sweet chilli sauce. I would have tried the chicken wings if not for this being a work lunch (didn’t want to deal with sticky fingers). For main, the medium porterhouse steak with pepper sauce and baked potato (or fries) was just what I needed. Delicious.

Service was quick and staff was friendly and attentive.

Will be back.
Came here due to it's proximity to the forum prior to a show and to enjoy the variety of steak on offer. Food came out surprisingly quickly considering it was a busy Saturday night. I enjoyed my dish and my partner loved his steak, chips and mushroom gravy. He ate it very slowly to savor every morsel of it. The highlight would have to be the service. Staff were so friendly and attentive and they made it a really pleasant experience. Will recommend to others.

Booked a dinner for 5 for my birthday. Had inadvertently told everyone about a set menu which was for functions of 12 or more. Ari was wonderful and still made it happen. Our attendant Ashley was delightful and made the night that extra bit fantastic! The food was exemplary! A+ all the way!!

My partner and I were here for Valentine’s Day and we got the Valentine’s Day set for two. For starters we had an excellent selection of Fresh and Kilpatrick oysters, Calamari, and Chicken Wings. We both got the Tenderloin for our mains, mine with fries and his with a baked potato. Mine was the perfect medium rare like I asked. I dont remember what the dessert was, it was something chocolate, and that was nice too! I think they close at 10, but we left a little over 10:30, and they still had smiles on their faces! Service was also attentive with the waitress regularly asking us how the meals went. We both left full and satisfied!

Went on Tuesday night and was full house. Excellent selection of beef. Not the highest grades but it's great value. Service is attative and friendly.

Favourite place to eat steak in melbourne! Always enjoy our meal 👍 when my partner and I feel like great steak we know we can count on Rare to give us the best steak
Hungry Little Dinosaur
I I always say that Rare is better than all the other steakhouses and usually it is the case but gradually it becomes more and more lacklustre. It seems cold and unwelcoming, drinks list gets smaller and the sauce gets more watered down each time. Still good but could be better like what it used to be
Feast Meets West
Friendly staff and for the most part, great service. The waiter that brought us our food was different from the lady who took our order so a couple of things were switched on our plates but wasn’t the end of the world. The calamari entree was quick to come out but had this sandy, grainy texture as you chew. Wasn’t pleasant. Not sure what was in the seasoning but it lacked flavour. Steak mains were cooked to our liking. We both like it rare. My boyfriend’s creamy garlic sauce was amazing. I had the mushroom sauce which was nice. The smoked corn salad was bland though and lacked the corn flavour since the cabbage overpowered it with its bitterness. However they redeemed themselves with amazing desserts. I had the flourless chocolate cake and he had the sticky date pudding. Both desserts were moist and full of flavour, balanced well with the vanilla ice cream to cut through the sweetness. Would still go back for their steak menu.

Great lunch👍 but I’m at the wrong end of town... Came for lunch on my own in my casuals... I look so out of the place...

Port house steak - I asked for medium rare but I think it’s between medium rare to medium.

Calamari - love the house made sweet chilli sauce, even I hate chilli in general but this sauce made the calamari taste so good 😍😍

Garden salad - extremely fresh and crunchy

The day my friends and I went in was not busy. Priced reasonably, It was absolutely stunning and delicious! The steaks were served to me and my friends exactly in our expectation of how we would like the meat to be cooked (considering we encountered numerous steak house failures) I know this might be a small aspect to judge but I was really impressed by the salad which was as a side to come with the steak (not the extra salad we ordered) it was fresh and lettuces were so scrunchy!) the only downside if I had to nitpick, I wished the waiter/waitress had recommended wines to best company our steak.

The hardest thing to do when having three different steakhouse venues in close proximity to each other is consistency . I’ll admit in the past this downtown venue missed the mark however last nights visit proved otherwise this time around!
We ordered a few different oysters which I liked the butter lemon. We all ordered the scotch fillet angus steak cooked medium and the same as the Uptown venue the flavours of the charcoal was delicious !
The steaks come with an option of chips , salads or mash. I also ordered the blue cheese sauce which I dipped my chips in 😁
Service was decent and quick.
Dine And Dash
This steak place was unbelievable. Went there for my birthday and I wasn't disappointed. I booked online which was easy although it's hard to decide which location to go to - Uptown, Midtown or Downtown as the menus vary slightly which was is a bit annoying. We went Downtown for ease of parking! The decor was very nice and classy and the service was fantastic - very helpful, friendly waiters. The food was out of this world such tender ribs and succulent steak but you'd expect that. The jus on the steak was amazing, so delicious. The corn and jalapeño croquettes were delicious as was the twice cooked chicken wings and ribs for entrées. They put a candle in my dessert of warm flourless chocolate cake which was beautiful with Mars Bar sauce. The sticky date pudding also divine. Couldn't fault any of the food albeit expensive but it's high class. Love to go back and check out the other 2 locations. Highly recommend.

The food was excellent. What I have a huge problem is that when it was time to settle the bill, the waitress was VERY pushy for a tip. C'mon man. I would of given a tip anyway but when you are that pushy it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Completely unnecessary.

No. Of Visit: 2
Overall Verdict: high-end steak house with amazing environment, but qualities of food & service don't fully hold in respect of the price.

Oyster ★★★★★ perfect
Chips ★★★★★ perfect
Salad ★★★★☆ highly recommended
Dessert ★★☆☆☆ crazy sweet

Steak ★★★☆☆
The 700g to-share rib eye steak looks small and barely the weight it claimed to be. Quality of the meat is alright and rest well. However it's very under-seasoned (Almost no salt & pepper is added!!)

Service ★★☆☆☆
Has long, long way to go: Both times the staffs barely knew their menu. We were asked to repeat ourselves many times for almost every dishes. Both times staffs had to return to our table to confirm a few things after taking the order to the kitchen. Strangely for a steakhouse, staffs never asked "how would u like your steak done"? (Isn't that key question?)
Both times, there were something missing from our order and we had to chase up.
Service approach is close to overbearing - first visit we were asked "is everything alright" at least 6 times within 2 hours and second visit is like 4-5 times.
Potatoes both mashed and chips were great. Mash was buttery and smooth, chips were crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. I got the black pepper sauce and it was slightly tangy which I thought was a surprisingly good twist. Now, I got the scotch fillet 300 grams and it was cooked and rested well. However, the meat was quite under seasoned but quickly solved by cracking some fresh black pepper and salt on my own. The meat was tender on certain sides but wasnt particularly juicy, fatty or flavourful. For $45, I couldnt quite justify my meal. In general, the meal was really quite average, most likely wouldnt return!

I have an ironic story about this place given its name. I ordered a medium rare fillet here, and after an hour wait, it came out and was massively overcooked and not at temperature. We were with a group of ten, and I get that happens, I can deal with that.

Two other problems though. The steak actually tasted very oddly bad, with a liverish taste, like it was a bad aging; to the point of being inedible even to the members of the party who like a more cooked steak.

When I told the manager about these issues, she offered to replace it, but I didn't have the time to wait. She offered a dessert, which I declined since I'm not much of a dessert guy. That's alright, but then they left the steak on the bill and required me to pay for it. That's not alright. Won't be going back.

This is by far the BEST STEAKHOUSE in Melbourne and if you're a big steak lover or even if you're not you have to try this sensational place out.
As you walk in, you are greeted with such big smiles from the staff and once in the place looks absolutely amazing, such a classy looking restaurant with such dimmed lighting which sets such a romantic place to take your love, work dinner or even a birthday. the service here really surprised me as when i went on a rainy day and was wet when i came in they offered me a towel to dry myself.

Now to the food, the steaks are cooked by a char grilled and is cooked to perfection, the steak is tender and juicy. with the sauces for the steak, the mushroom sauce is to die for however if you don't like mushroom sauce then i would recommend the creamy garlic or the danish blue cheese which is also incredible. with the steak you can get a side or chips, creamy mash or a garden salad. the steakcut chips are very crispy with perfect amount of salt. although if you decide to go with the creamy mash this is also a great choice as the mash is smooth, no lumps or anything like that which you can find at other steakhouses.

this place has never failed to give me a good meal and have been going back multiple times as the steaks are too hard to resist.
Janice Bautista
Steak was perfectly grilled - still pink, tender and juicy. I got the lunch special for only $30 - which I think is very good value. The garlic prawns did not taste of garlic though. The croquettes and the coleslaw were both very good. Service was superb!
Hungry Ham
Our experience was ruined by a rude waitress but otherwise the food was good. The beef tartare was really nice, it was slightly on the salty side for my liking but was balanced out by the toasted bread. We ordered two types of scotch fillet and when the waitress brought them to our table, she just dropped them down without saying which was which. So I asked her "which one is this?" pointing to the plate in front of me. And she replied with "they're steaks". I was so taken aback by her rudeness. So I asked her which steak is which? She then responded with "that's the porterhouse and thats the scotch" before she snapped "I'll go check" and walked off. I haven't encountered such rude service in such a long time. The steaks were well cooked and tender. We ordered a side of mushrooms as well which were nice but nothing spectacular. We paid with the liven app which took 25% off the bill, but nonetheless, I expected better service so I would be reluctant to return despite the food being good.

Beautiful steak! I had the 200g grain fed eye fillet with red wine jus, with mash and the steak just melted in my mouth. Lovely warm atmosphere, will definitely come back for the steak!

Maybe I have overly high expectations but I would think that a venue presenting itself as a steakhouse would offfer a dry-aged steak.

Moving on.

Had lunch here today and whilst my eye fillet was cooked exactly as ordered it was not the most tender or flavoursome eye I have had (yes I know it is a lean cut).
I normally wouldnt put up a review on one steak alone but my companions porterhouse was not overly impressive either. It was cooked as ordered also but as with my eye fillet it was lacking in flavour.

Venue and staff were great, chips and greek salad delicious.
Quality of the meat today was underwhelming.
Maybe we ate on a bad day?.

Edit: my garlic butter on the side was half frozen and either it was really really bad butter or it was margarine, my gut is telling me it was not entirely butter, either way it was unnaceptable.
Highlights: The Pork Ribs and side order of crispy fried onions.
Downfall : The sauces to accompany the steaks
Wishes : Wish the ambience of the room matched the food
Had a lovely meal here, the food was to a high enough standard. For entree we shared the ribs, some of the best I've had, full of flavour and the meat fell off the bones. For mains we both chose steak ( both very nice cuts), the waitress was very knowledgeable and helped me select a steak that would be best served blue. The sides were OK, the chips nice and crispy, the sauces (mushroom and creamy garlic) were a let down. The fried crispy onions however were heroes! amazing! The restaurant itself was lacking in character and ambience. Was disappointed on arrival, but thankfully the food made up for it. Might be back again but not in a hurry.

Nestled amongst Jazz Bars in Goldie Place is where you'll find Rare Steakhouse Downtown. Only a short walk from Melbourne's iconic Hardware Lane, there's plenty of atmosphere and that nostalgic Melbourne laneway city feel. Set in a refurbished warehouse of yesteryear, the wooden furnishings and rustic exposed red brick provided a lovely warm feel - very welcoming on a cool Melbourne Winter's night.

If you're a steak lover, definitely make your way down to your nearest rare. I've been to the rare steakhouse on king street a few times and they are yet to disappoint. Food here has been consistently good and the service is good also. In my opinion though, the ribs here were quite a let down after eating at squires loft restaurants and hurricanes in Sydney. Stick to a rare steak here and you won't be disappointed !

I made a Zomato account for the sole purpose of leaving feedback, to this particular Steak house. I dined here back in the start of 2016. I ordered the Porterhouse 300g(Jack's Creek Wagyu Mable score (value: $62) while my friends ordered the regular porterhouse 300g($36). When we received the food, i noticed that my steak was half the size, in comparison, to my friends steak. I queried the waiter, who , informed me that steak tends to shrink and this is the correct sizing. Within 5 minutes or less, I finished my food while my friends had only ate 1/4 of theirs. I went back to the waiter and mentioned that I had finished my food and they mentioned that its too late to check with the chef. I was so annoyed and hungry, I went and got Maccas.

This weekend we chose Rare as our dinner venue for a bucks with 19 people. The process of booking was a breeze given I kept chopping and changing numbers in the weeks leading up. There is a minimum spend on the private level however Rare was kind enough to offer it to us with no spend obligation. The $55 menu was well received and ideal during a long night out on the town. The drinks are extra and are priced well, for 19 of us, all constantly with a drink in hand we spent approx $300 over 2-2.5hrs
As far as group dining experiences go I would not hesitate in booking this venue again. Opt for the more expensive menu if you are a big steak fans!

Another added perk was the private bar and toilet on our level.
This part of King Street is not the greatest place to dine of an evening. However for a good steak it hits the spot. No frills. Steak, chips and bottle of red. Steak was done to order and quality of meat good. Service was efficient and no fuss. Keep in mind.
Vince
Find it so hard to find a good mushroom steak these days even though these guys have a few restaurants king street is my favourite and I feel they got it right. Recommend Mushroom Fetta for entree.
Scott Clark
Steak was fantastic and cooked to perfection. Very nice selection of wine with the house cab absolute scrumptious. Only draw backs that kept it from a 5 is it is a bit cramped and quite noisy. To be honest, I didn't care he meat was that tasty.
The Dear Luncher
Rare provides a sensational culinary experience every time. The Dear Luncher, aka The Secretary of Steak has visited on numerous occasions. If there’s a better lunch option on the west-side of the CBD, well, The Dear Luncher would like to know about it. Service, exemplary. Steaks, first rate. Sides, always glorious. The Dear Luncher considers Rare Downtown to be his favourite steakhouse in central Melbourne and that is indeed a feat.
Danii Dee
Not a bad thing to say about any dining experience I've had here.
The staff are always accommodating and friendly. The steak is always cooked to perfection and the wine is always well recommended.
The front of house staff make the perfect accompaniment to a wonderful dinner

It was packed when we arrived. The porterhouse wagyu is the best. The staffs are really nice, which is a plus. They sang a birthday song for us, a lil bit flat tho (kidding...

Went here last night! Got the eye fillets 200/300g with chips, mash, onion rings, roasted veg and feta mushrooms!
Lovely food but the roasted veg defo not the best!
Staff really good!
Sticky date for dessert which was nice too!

It is my first time to have dinner here with my mum. We ordered salt and pepper calamari and gnocchi as entree. Both dishes are not too bad, between average to above average. Then we ordered eye fillet and lamb rack as main course. The steak comes with salad. Then terrible thing happened when eating salad. There is a piece of DIRTY PAPERBOARD in the salad!!! It is so disgusting and makes us totally no appetite. Although the waitress was very nice and apologised sincerely, and the steak dish wasn't been charged, but I really cannot enjoy the meal after it happened. We then paid the bill and left the restaurant. Wont come back again for sure!

Love this place. Service was alright, always have new staff. But good steaks; you want steak, just come here!! Highly recommended for steak.

Took my boyfriend to Rare Downtown as a birthday treat as he loves steak. It was on the recommendation of a friend. When I booked, I also requested that they bring a cupcake for my partner with a candle after the mains and they rang the day before to confirm that they could do that. I thought this was great service. We arrived at 830pm for our booking, were seated and provided with water and bread immediately. They don't do BYO so we ordered a shiraz bottle and were told that they'd decanter the bottle for us due to sediment at the bottom of this particular bottle. We ordered aranchini as a starter, the wagyu scotch fillet, the wagyu porterhouse and some beans to share with our main. I thought the steaks would have been a bit thicker given the $70 each price but they were delicious nevertheless. We shared one mushroom sauce between the two of us and both agreed that the mashed potato was amazing. Creme brulee for desert was lovely. Overall a good experience but they forgot the birthday cupcake, the service was about a 7 out of 10 and the restaurant was quite noisy. Wouldn't say they have the best steaks in town nor is it value for money but worth a try. Total bill was $237.

We enjoyed an absolutely wonderful dinner here. Both of our meals were faultless. The ambience and service was excellent, as was the lovely waitress that took care of us. To top off a fabulous night, we were offered our dessert as complimentary.

For a steakhouse they did cook the steak well although my partner had a more expensive cut of meat & said she much preferred mine as hers was rather chewy. The mash potato although nice & creamy could of done with seasoning however both the garlic sauce & the blue cheese sauce were delicious. Cannot fault the staff in here either. A good meal

I went to this restaurant with my partner on Saturday, it had a nice atmosphere, helpful staff and the steak was delicious. My partner got the scotch fillet - grain fed black angus - medium rare and I got the scotch fillet - wagyu marble - medium rare, this was $28 more than his - we just wanted to see the difference. My steak was much more juicy, flavoursome and melt in your mouth. I would definitely say getting a more expensive steak is worth it, especially is you're going to a steakhouse. Also, side note; ask the waiter or waitress to take the cheese out of the fridge at the start of the meal, when our cheese arrived it was still hard and very cold. The warmer the cheese, the more flavour it has.

Walked past this place quite a few times and finally my workmates and i went and tried it out. For the price and what you got it was pretty good, i had the porterhouse steak with a garlic sauce, chips and the oysters. Everyones steak was cooked well, but mine was on the rare side (i dont mind rare at times) when i asked for medium rare. Nonetheless i would still go again :)

We love Rare Steakhouse! Which is rare that we would like it, because neither of us are big steak fans, probably only have steak every couple of years! The staff are beyond friendly, very professional and accommodating and the service is exceptional. The food is amazing! Best steak we have ever had, perfectly cooked just the way we had requested it. The mushroom sauce is light but so flavoursome and delicious, never had any mushroom sauce like it! We even asked for more to dip our chips in- it was that good!

TIP: Do order the Salt & Pepper Calamari and Garlic Prawns- they are simple but perfect and full of flavour! Don't forget to order mushroom sauce on your steak- it is heavenly.

Nothing completely wrong here but the service feels like the staff have the night off from hospitality school. Very clinical and no genuine warmth as they just go thorough checklist motions. Some personality would go a long way.

Want a great quality steak with amazing service? Rare downtown has such a great atmosphere that you will love eating here again and again. Loved the different size and type of cuts available as well the different entrees. Highly recommend the sausages!

Had a great meal with a friend, outstanding food and service. Lovely porterhouse steak, which was perfectly cooked. The dessert was phenomenal. Highly recommend it.

Just went there for a dinner first time last night, quit disappointed. We ordered some entrees (calamari, garlic prawn, onion soup, seafood risottos, oysters) which were ok nothing special, then we ordered 5 steaks as our main, it came out only 1 steak was cooked medium rare as requested, 3 of them was dry but still eatable,my friends just ate it. Mine one was the worst, I asked for medium rare Angus Pure Natural Beef, when it was served it was totally dry on its surface, I cut it in the middle, it does look red inside so I ate a bit of it. It was very dry and chewy. Nothing taste like a medium rare porterhouse. So I just leave it on the plate, the waitress came to check on us, she asked me about the steak. I told her the steak was very dry and chewy. Then she said she need to talk to the chef, after two minutes a guy( who tried to sit 5 of us with a table only got 4 chairs==") came to ask me again what happened with the steak, I told him again it was very dry and chewy. He said "it cooked 100% perfectly, do you want me to get you some more sauce?". I said no, it's ok, then he left. What's the point to waste more sauce on a dry chewy steak which I'm not gonna eat anyway. I cut couples small pieces of my steak to let my friends taste it, they all said their one was dry but not as worse as mine one. We just paid our bill and left. Worst steak I ever had in a restaurant.

Amazing food! The steak was perfectly cooked and the service excellent. 5/5 rating well deserved - beautiful decor and restaurant design too
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Really good food and great atmosphere! Got salt and pepper calamari and wild mushroom arancini balls for entre, eye fillet with mash for main and sorbet for dessert. Great service and really attentive wait staff.
Simone
Pork ribs and oysters for entree. Pork ribs were so tender and had a subtle smokey flavour. Some sort of sauce would of been nice to make it less dry. Steaks were cooked perfectly and quality cuts were used. Fantastic service. Definitely give it a try

I had the swordfish for dinner at it was really over salted and the potatoes were undercooked/hard in the middle. Probably the worst meal I have had put in Melbourne for years.
Paul
Firstly, let me start by saying that I had absolutely no issue whatsoever with the service which was friendly, attentive and unobtrusive.

However, in respect to the food there were numerous issues. Unfortunately, the ribs were anorexic (& overpriced), and the bbq sauce was bitter and completely inedible. The star of this purportedly "signature dish" was the mash potato - which was fortunately quite nice.

The whiskey sour was easily the worst I've had anywhere and I could not detect any whiskey in it at all - it tasted like nothing more than a weak lemon drink.

The sticky date pudding was quite unimpressive -much like the entire meal - and given this experience it is a place I will never return.

I loved the uptown one so thought it'd be the same here. Same name but the foods tasted different. Ordered scotch fillet steak which was rare (requested medium rare) so that was a little bit disappointing. the mashed potatoes was good and tasty. Went out of the way this time and got dessert for once. Chose the pannacotta as it was different to what you'd normally see on a panncotta. Was nice and soft, and loved the strawberry flavour with the bit of lemoness. Overall, if I was to go to rare steakhouse again, I'd probably only go back to the uptown stake house.

Good service and nice eating atmosphere, panacotta was too sweet with som much berry jam on top. Eye fillet was quite tender and baked potato, no doubt, absolutely my favorite. Most importantly, it is a lunch with my friends and family, so that is what makes it enjoyable.

Lovely restaurant, perfect for midweek date night or catching up with friends on a Friday evening. Their oyster platter is a perfect starter with 8 oysters served in 4 different flavours. Steak is served with either chip, mashed or roast with sour cream and chives. Not the best steak restaurant but enjoyable and tasty nonetheless.

Had the eye fillet of Grain Fed Black Angus and Angus pure natural beef. The texture is great, good place for dating. The surrounding atmosphere is nice as well.

My friend and I ordered the 2-course set dinner menu. It was horrible. The grilled mushroom entree is overly salty. And, the porterhouse steak was a bit cold and tasteless. The mushroom sauce that came with the steak didn't help much with the taste.

As bad as the food was, I wouldn't have written this review if we didn't get a stomachache after having the meal. Such a terrible experience. Would never go back.

Everything was just absolutely beautiful! Perfect oysters and a fantastic range as well. The entree gnocchi was amazing and the steak were beautiful, juicy and perfectly cooked. You have to try your steak with the red wine jus, best I've ever had!

I had the beef ribs, it was flavoursome but the meat was not tender and didn't know fall off the bone. It was also a little burnt at the end. Very smooth mash though.

Rare was having a special for September giving away 2 glasses of branded Riedel if you order their Wagyu steaks. I've never tried the Wagyu steaks because they were pretty expensive but I'm so glad I did. They melted in your mouth and you don't need any sauce with that. Can't go back to "normal" steaks now ... Only having the Wagyu from now on. I've been spoilt!!
RealGirlSaysRealThings
Had the porterhouse with side of mash and mushroom sauce. The steak was grilled to medium just as I requested. Cant complain about the food, quite reasonable pricing and serving size..however the waitresses could show a bit of attitude, especially when they think they were busy and asking some water or extra napkins made us looked like stuck up royalties..just because of that not sure I will come back since I just learned to make a great steak myself 😉 xox

A warm greeting on a cold night.
We did main and dessert, indulging in some tender steaks. Great tip from the waitress about the portion sizes of the sides, very generous when having a steak and mash.
Big wine list, lots of interesting choices and special occasion bottles.
$240 for three of us and we were very full!

Overpriced steak restaurant we arrived for our booking waited 20min to order a drink my cocktail was so strong couldn't drink it. Ordered the share ribs with a side of chips and coleslaw. Coleslaw was salty, ribs okay nothing to brag about. We realised once we ordered it was cheaper getting seperate rib meal as it included the sides no one thought to tell us that for 150 you can find better food else where in Melbourne and much better valued

I love this place so much! Steak was cooked to perfection, very tender and juicy! Dessert was da bomb, flourless chocolate cake. I am definitely coming back for the cake!!

Wonderful. My partner had b.... Wonderful.
My partner had booked a table for us, upon arriving the head waitress I assume greeted us super friendly, we sat upstairs.
Our waiter for the night was great, really friendly and attentive all night.
We had the calamari (super quick ) and two eye fillets with a salad to share and they were amazing, best steaks in melbourne by far and cooked to perfection. Definitely recommend and come again !! Thanks Rare steakhouse downtown for a wonderful evening!

Birthday lunch letdown. Lunch 1/5. Not an enjoyable experience. Ordered medium rare but steak overcooked. Maître d then tried to explain it was medium rare so my fault and I should have ordered rare? How’s that? I think I know what is medium rare! Second one was rare bordering on blue. That went back as well. Can understand that occasionally in a steak restaurant the meat is not cooked to order but please understand most customer s will know what their steak should look like.

Yummy. This is a excellent place to go to and you will definitely leave satisfied. One of the best cooked steaks I have ever had.

Melbourne Trip. We had dinner at this steakhouse the first time we went to Melbourne and was really good. Booked this restaurant again during our second trip to Melbourne and we weren't disappointed . Steaks were excellent. Would recommend to friends and will go back again.

“My husband and I remember this restaurant for it’s good quality and consistent steaks. This occasion was initiated through Dimmi’s booking special of 50% off main meals for dining which met certain criteria..."

The steak was well seasoned and probably didn’t need the sauce. This was probably because of the Steakmate Baste they use The sauce did go nicely with the potato though; it needed a bit more flavour. The grass-fed Mayura wagyu was flavoursome. I was seated next to the window and the contrast between the yellow lighting from inside and the white street lamp from outside made it hard to tell exactly how the meat was cooked. I guessed by the texture and relative darkness of the beef that it was more like rare. The kitchen was happy to put it on the heat a bit longer. It was much better when I got it back (along with a new potato and re-seasoning). The wagyu was certainly more flavoursome than regular beef, but it wasn’t quite as amazing as I thought it

Eye Fillet (200grams) With Baked Potato, 36AUD Mushroom Sauce, 4.50AUD Rare Steakhouse is a white-tablecloth restaurant serving 15 various different cuts of quality grain fed beef. We made reservations at about 7.30pm and by the time we arrived, I was ascertained it would be difficult to get seats for those who didn't book a table. Steak goes a long way with wine and we all had a glass of the red Sommerville Cabernet Sauvignon to pair our grilled pastured beef. A pity I only drank a sip because you know me and alcohol don't symphonize. Jan had the Eye Fillet, a thicker cut than the others. He's quite adventurous to ask for medium rare considering that it'd be best to ask for a medium or medium well since its hard for Eye Fillet to cook through. Indeed it was a little too rare for his liking, the mushroom sauce was his saving grace to pull through with the whole meat down his throat. The baked potato was amongst the softest we have ever tasted, it was truly amazing! Ciabatta Before o

All in all, aside from the disappointing entree, I enjoyed all the other meals we tried at Rare Steakhouse. Rare Steakhouse also sell pork ribs which I am yet to try. Given my love of ribs I will have to go back. This place seems to be a slightly cheaper option that Meat & Wine Co. and their steak was on par. I was annoyed at the service in the beginning but I think this was a once-off so am willing to look past this. Given this restaurant is so close to my work, I know I will be back soon especially for those crispy onion rings however I will avoid the Coles sausage next time!!

As date night, D took me to Rare on a Monday because he managed to get hold of their 50% off whole menu special from Dimmi. Located on the corner of Flinders Lane and King Street, it is the more adult part of the city. Rare has a great atmosphere with the low lighting and slight business feel to it. I could imagine a number of business lunches and dates taking place in this venue. For starters I ordered the Coffin Bay oysters tasting plate. This done 4 ways: Kilpatrick, natural, vinaigrette and mornay. The oysters were creamy and the mornay further enhanced that. The Kilpatrick had good worchester sauce and bacon ratio. The vinaigrette was a nice compliment to the mornay flavour, it got my palette ready for the next entree. The other starter was the 500g pork ribs. Ribs are always a favourite of D's but sadly this one didn't make the cut. The ribs were not as saucy as we had hoped (I was expecting something a very big rack meaty ribs, dripping in sauce). The meat was well cooked, it w

Had the early bird menu and was disappointed beyond belief. The service was perfunctory at best and the food was ordinary. I couldn't believe it when the mash potatoes tasted like the instant powder sort and the steaks were rather tasteless. People might say that this is to be expected when you're having the 'early diners' option but I think a truly professional establishment would never resort to poor quality as a way of reducing menu price!
