I can't speak highly enough of this little pizza place in a laneway off Bourke street.
The wood fired pizzas are to die for and the woodfired gnocchi is rather nice just a little plain. But with a little bit of chilli oil drizzled on it it is amazing.
Best pizzeria! SPQR is set on a laneway in the heart of the CBD in a typical Melbourne fashion.
The menu is quite simple yet authentic. It's a great place for a quick dinner after an event in the city. We ended up here after going to another place first and being treated badly, but it worked out for the best for sure!
We ordered the Pepperoni and the Hey Pesto. Both were delicious, we couldn't fault them.
Will be back for sure!
When you get excited about booking somewhere new and it turns out to be pants but then you leave and you end up at SPQR Pizza instead – it’s a great night!! We had walked past the big windows on our way to our rubbish dinner destination – everyone looked so happy and it was all so warm and welcoming and it was pizza. It only took 30 minutes of crap service and no food for us to scurry back and look a little bit too hopeful when we asked if we could still get a table. Little intimate table for two just for us, under the chalkboard packed with the delicious dough stuff that we love!
Came here on Sunday evening. And apparently we have to book, but luckily we manage to just walked in. Couldnt remember what we got. But we definitely had the seasonal pizza which was the white pizza.
It was ok for that one, not really a big fan of the potatoes on the pizza. But loves the red pizza with meat and rocket on top! :) pretty filling for me hahaha
We had a trio of pizzas on a full-on busy Saturday night here. All 3 didn't disappoint.
The Margherita was a cheesy delight. Loved the mozzarella and parmesan combination. The Zucca was delicious (especially if you're a fan of pumpkin)! It was the first time I've had pumpkin on a pizza and it sure won't be the last time. And finally, the Hey Pesto had lovely creamy eggplant with pesto and cheese. The pizza dough was soft yet chewy and well charred.
The pizzas come with a premium price tag and service was a bit hot and cold. All in all, a pleasant night at SPQR.
God damn that Quattro formaggi pizza is good! Dribble a bit of chilli oil on a slice to add a bit of kick and devour that beauty!
Not a fan of the music but hell, I wasn’t coming for that was I? Hands down you will NOT regret stopping by for a pie
😱Lizzie’s first impression: I was quickly impressed when the pizza came out, despite having a rocky start with the staff not welcoming me...
🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I tried the mushroom pizza and it was hands down one of the most delicious pizzas I’ve had - the base is soft by had a great flavour and salty enough (almost reminding me of garlic naan) the toppings were generous and I even asked for some truffle oil which complemented well with the mushroom. We also tried he pepperoni pizza and that was delicious too - a lot of meat but not too fatty.
🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: I was greeted by a lady at the door to welcome my partner and I so I started walking behind her only to find out that she walked into the kitchen area, leaving me embarrassed when the other male staff looked at me funny as he didn’t know what I was doing walking into the restaurant by myself without being escorted apparently.
🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great place for pizzas if not one of the greatest in the CBD - I just wished the staff were as good as the food.
Delicious pizza, great wine list, great customer service. I've returned here and the food does not disappoint! Always jamming and there's a great vibe. The only (minor) complaint is that the music is very loud, making it hard to have conversatilns. Music choice on point though!
Ordered a takeaway before the footy. I must say it is one of the best wood fired pizza places in Melbourne. The ingredients are quality and the staff are polite and friendly.
SPQR Pizzeria is serving Neapolitan style sourdough pizza that's ready in 60 seconds thanks to a wood oven running at 420 degrees. Get it by the slice with a can of Peroni Red at a quick-service bar or settle into the split-level dining room for antipasti, gnocchi and whole pizzas. The wine list focuses on Italian varietals from throughout the world alongside beer, Aperol spritz, red and white wine on tap. Boasting over 27 different street artists, the walls are a constantly evolving gallery and with DJs most nights this isn't your average pizzeria. "Straight Outta Naples"
Really enjoy eating at SPQR, the woodfire pizza is amazing, very different toppings from your standard you usually get at some pizzerias, will be back one day to try other toppings!
If you know good pizza, you know DOC, Lazer Pig and Takeaway Pizza are pretty up there right now, but I reckon this joint could take top spot.
I ordered Jim's Pie (I could never miss the opportunity to consume n'duja) it came out smokin' hot. Taking that first bite was a head on collision with my taste buds, it was rich, smooth and comforting, with soooo many layers of flavour. Mushrooms were buttery and sweet and the cheese didn't coagulate!
I can't really fault the pizza, so I ate the entire thing, was stuffed but would've eaten more.
Didn't take a pic because I was too busy eating, as per usual. Soz
4.5
I came here today on a recommendation for lunch with friends. Wow I was so impressed, the pizza was magical, a super thin base with a lovely bubbly crust and thin but seriously tasty toppings.
The service was friendly and the pizzas arrived in no time, we ordered the Margherita with no basil, a Pepperoni and the Marinara (not a seafood pizza). I added anchovies and cheese to the Mariana, it was the most extraordinary flavoured tomato based pizza, the fresh garlic was banging, basil and anchovies perfect. Pizza perfection, Im so glad I was introduced to this place.
KD
Absolutely mindblowing when a restaurant's amazing entrees carries on to dinner.
Ordered:
🧀 Caprese (v): burrata mozzarella, heirloom tomato & basil ($15.00)
🍝 Woodfired Gnocchi 'of the day' (v): with pesto and rosemary in entree size ($14.00)
🍕 Tartufo (v): truffle paste, potato, rosemary & mozzarella di bufala ($27.00)
Review:
When you go to a little of the beaten path restaurant and order the 'gourmet' type pizzas - those with barely any toppings - it's important that the place does EVERY element well.
Much to my shock, Tartufo's crust was fluffy, potato well cooked, truffle paste with flavour and rosemary a nice punchy touch. S.P.Q.R smashed it out of the ballpark.
The entrees were unreal as well. Caprese and woodfired gnocchi were memorable and very vegetarian friendly.
We also saw some vegan friendly options, service was also so engaging, and inside atmosphere very nice for an intimate meal. Would highly recommend you take worthy friends and dates here!
One thing that did annoy me was that they passed the card surcharge onto the customer. Although it's only a small percentage (1-2%), I am well aware that restaurants can choose to absorb the card fees. Perhaps because S.P.Q.R have little competition that they choose to pass the card fees onto the customer :(
#cashisking
Great for an easy family meal after/before the theater. Pizzas come out quick and they do gluten free.
Has a funky feel and the service was good.
I would recommend for pizza lovers
Great pizza, friendly service although a little overpriced for what you get and also a very loud atmosphere. Was good overall and may return again.
Senātus PopulusQue Rōmānus!
Seeing the letters SPQR reminds The Dear Luncher of the “History of The World” movies by Mel Brooks. Damn they were funny movies. Go and watch them. When you’re done, you can resume reading this review.
The Roman Empire was a pretty damn good empire as far as empires go, they invented plumbing. Also invented in this part of the world was pizza, and SPQR pay high levels of respect to this particular dish. It’s a bit grungy inside. Spartan, if you will. But what it perhaps might lack in polish it makes up for in quality of food and service. The pizzas were near-on faultless. The key to making decent pizzas is an excellent base and taking the KISS approach: Keep It Simple Stupid. Don’t overload the pizzas with tons of ingredients, just nail the 2-3 that you plan to have on it. That’s what they do at SPQR.
The Buffalino, The Guanciale special and the Pepperoni were all shared on this table, all three were excellent. Having chilli an offer to douse some slices in, also results in a big tick. The only annoying thing about the visit were some very persistent little flies that interrupted the eating process. Beyond that, this is a quality establishment that deserves your attention.
4.5/5.
I always get SPQR pizza delivered because hubby love their truffle and potato pizza 🍕 I always like to try different pizzas and its always pretty good, although sometimes I find the base a bit soggy.
On this occasion we ordered the truffle and potato pizza (of course), the meatball pizza (a bit watery), the marinara (no! No seafood! Not THAT type of marinara). What I loved about the marinara is that what seemed like a very very plain ingredients but the flavours were quite pronounced. I think it was the fresh garlic (so beware! Maybe it isn’t date night material!).
Also got their garlic bread, although I found that quite oily, and also the tiramisu was delish.
Simple, friendly and tasty.personal favourite pizza joint. Would highly recommend, amazingly authentic and spelt as though I was in Italy. Great wine and cocktails menu. Great with dietary restrictions
Date visited: 02/10/2018.
This Pizza restaurant is in my top 2 dining/pizza experience in my life!
Not sure if I will be able to describe what I really think but Im going to try.
SPQR is a little of the beaten track but it is in Liverpool st off Bourke, near the Parliament House end of Melbourne.
Restaurant kind of small maybe hold 30-35 Ppl.
Pizza is exactly like shown in the pictures above no false advertising.
Staff & service is second to none, really friendly (like they actually like their jobs) the staffer Adrian introduced himself by name. Service is fast (10 mins Pizza was on the table).
We ordered & my mum said she should have ordered a garlic bread as she loves her garlic so I called Adrian over & asked even thou our pizza was being cooked & it was not a problem & came out virtually straight away & remembered my mother's name upon producing the garlic bread.
My order was the Margherita pizza - $23.00 - San Marzano base, Mozzarella di Bufala, Basil, Olive Oil & Parmesan.
OMG the Marzano base was sooooo rich & saucy, the Mozzarella di Bufala melted in your mouth & the Parmesan gave you that like bit of a bite (mild sharp). This was food for the kings.
Sea salt & chilli oil are free on the table in bowls so you can sprinkle what amount you like.
This restaurant is almost like 4.5 star dining but it has a layed back feel to it at the same time.
Depending of your drink of choice is (fine wine to beer) you could do a lot of damage in this establishment $$$ wise.
We had the Margherita pizza, 2 beers & the Garlic bread & the total was only $47.00 which I found good.
The staff upon us leaving appreciated our dining with there business.
This is clearly one of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne & if you are a pizza lover & like good service or nice dining this place ticks every box.
I cant wait to take my wife & oldest's daughter to this restaurant next time we are all in Melbourne together.
What make me extra happy was after returning to our hotel rooms my mum who is 65 told me she has never gone to a pizza restaurant in her life, so Im happy that this place was a really positive encounter for her.
THANK YOU STAFF & CHEF'S @SPQR ;)
REALLY hope this review helped some one :)

My family and I have been here twice and we absolutely love the pizza! So delicious, and the staff are very welcoming, friendly and funny/engaging. We also had the bolognese gnocchi! Absolutely amazing!
The only problem we have with it was when we sat down we were offered still or sparkling water. Having been to some cafes/restaurants where sparkling water is free, we agreed to have that. (Mind this is before we have even had the opportunity to look at the drinks menu. If the price was given on the menu we had no knowledge of it prior to ordering it.) At no point were we told we'd be charged for it. I have no problem being charged if we had known it wasn't free, but it seems quite misleading to be offering a free item and a priced item along side each other and not tell the customer sparkling water is $8-9. It just left a bitter taste at the end of our night when we paid and were charged money for something we didn't even know we purchased.
Such a rippa crew here! Can't wait to eat there again... great food amazing staff!! Delicious range of vegi options and they offer dairy and gluten free options too. Total winner!!
We came here on a late Friday night. I must admit we only ate here as all the other restaurants’ kitchens were shut. So glad we did. The pizzas were perfectly cooked and the base - yum! Finally tried my first Nutella pizza even though I inhaled a whole pizza by myself earlier. Luckily there was 4 of us and we got a bit of everything. Highlights: pizza! Lowlights: the set up of the place is a little cramped.
How difficult it is to find a simple Italian Pizza now adays?, and this joint does it well. Unique Melbourne iconic laneway entrance to cost wood fired Italian pizzeria. Simple menu yet has good selection of both pizzas and drinks including my fav red label Peroni. We had pizza margarita was delicious with good quality cheese, fresh basil & that burnt woody taste of wood fire pizza. Has a nice rich flavorful tomato paste. Nice handmade pizza base that fluffy but perfectly burnt outside. Take away menu super cheap as well. Staff were attentive & friendly. Overall quality of ingredients, taste, ambiance & service against price gives an overall rating of 4.6* out of 5.

Yummm, at last a really delicious pizza the prosciutto pizza was a standout and the bolognaise pizza was almost as good. The base was beautifully rolled and I can’t wait to go back for more
Beautiful rustic little restaurant tucked away in a alleyway. The Service was great and the food was to die for!! By far the best pizza we had for a while! My husband ordered the red pizza with italian sausage and pepperoni and I had a white pizza with pork sausage and truffle. OMG it was amazing!! I reckon SPQR should be involved in the italian food festival and show Johnny at Gradi how it's done!! Well done and I look forward to coming back for more!!!
Napoli with a twist. This is classic Neapolitan pizza, the fluffy crust, the soggy middle. But the difference is it’s sourdough. A blend of traditional and contemporary toppings, graffitied walls and a DJ all give SPQR a young feel. Oh, and the pizzas come within about 10 minutes or ordering!
A delicious Italian wood fire pizza joint in a hip warehouse style space. The service was friendly and attentive and there was a wide selection of pizzas and a few other dishes. I tried the pepperoni pizza which was yum. The crust was especially good - a well matured sourdough base that I couldnt stop eating (drenched in chilli oil of course!). Note the pizzas are expensive and a touch smaller than average and they charge a 10% premium on Sundays.
(4/5) SPQR is a cosy but surprisingly large restaurant filled with the wonderful aroma of pizza. The pizza menu on the wall has a great selection of pizzas. We loved both our pizzas - so delicious with great toppings and great cheese. The crust was also incredible. This might be my new favourite pizza spot in the city!
S.P.Q.R pizzeria is a great place to get some some good wood-fired sourdough pizza in the city. They use quality Italian ingredients and have soft fluffy dough which makes for some fine pizza. Good vibes and great pizza, what more could you want. S.P.Q.R Pizzeria – Vino. Vino in a not so traditional wine glass.
Went with friends for a casual dinner. The place was jam packed with people and we were lucky to get a table. We ordered pizzas and drinks. The portions were large and wholesome. For desserts we had tiramisu and nutella pizza. Tiramisu was rich, dark and had the right amount of sweet to it.
The ambience was good and staff is friendly. Only problem is that the place is understaffed and hence you have to wait a lot between each order. If that is fixed than i wouldn't mind making the place my regular hangout spot.
Not a bad option for a cheap and casual dinner in the city. Antipasto platter for two was really nice and quite generous. Pizzas were tasty but not the best I’ve ever had. We ordered the ndjua and the Parma. I definitely preferred the ndjua. Toppings were possibly a little sparse but I liked how the base was thin and chewy though.
This underground pizzeria boasts an impressive wood fired pizza oven, it took no more than a minute to toss out a piping hot margherita to go. We also got pizza to dine in, so many enticing toppings it was a tough choice by we settled on our three.
We got the parma, every place has their version of prosciutto, rocket and mozzarella di bufula. The highlight was the mozzarella, hand torn and layed fresh on the pizza, juicy and creamy as it should be. The pizza base was also fluffy, chewy and held it's own, one of the better ones out there. The tartufo was a combination of potato, truffle paste and melted mozzarella. Again the star was the mozzarella, I do however prefer the combination of truffle with mushrooms than potato, potato does tend to make it a bit heavy. The porko, stracciatella, bacon, onions and asparagus has the whole carbonara vibe to it, creamy, bacony, delcious.
My workmate has vowed to return to grab a couple slices as you can grab premade pizza to go or eat in. They also have communal chilli oil for all you chilli fiends out there.
Great tunes, great vibes, great staff great food. Had a bottle of Pinot Grigio which was super crisp. Enjoyed the wood fired gnocchi of the day which was a pesto sauce potato gnocchi with bocconi, has some garlic bread, a saluimi pizza which the base and sauce were some of the best in Melbourne. All round excellent. Can understand why still so busy at 10pm on a Thursday. Will be back!
YumyumyumyumYUM! I LOVE wood fired pizza! And this place was amazing. Friendly and knowledgeable service. Food is worth coming back for. Ordered the garlic bread and Antipasti platter for 2. Garlic bread was well lathered and soft. The pickled veggies were perfect to cut through the meat and flat bread, especially the pickled chilli which wasn’t as hot as I thought it would be. Flat bread portions were generous (nothing worse than an antipasti platter with poor ratios!) and somehow remained hot all the way to the bottom of the bowl. Would have liked more of a spicier chorizo as it was a little mild for my liking. Cheese was sharp and had great flavour. Ordered a Porcini and Salumi pizza. Loved the base; the crust was fluffy and had an earthy, charcoally flavour. While the base was thin, it held together well. Toppings were DELISH and the sauce was rich and packed with tomato flavour! Very authentic food and great nighttime ambience with low lighting and rustic, classy fitout. Love this place!
Great service and lovely pizzas - simple and not overdone with toppings. They are not crispy-based (if you're particular about that) but very nice, rich flavours. We ordered two, one after the other, and they both came out in good time. The only thing that left me a little dissatisfied was their failure to mention that sparkling water would cost an extra $6 - looking back I probably should have expected it, but it would be nice to be informed before you choose it nonetheless (did not order it from the menu, we were simply asked if we wanted tap water or sparkling upon arrival).
Hands down the best pizza I had ever and I’m not a pizza fan but the funghi one with white based made me a fan. Staff was really nice too. Thanks
I eat here at least twice a month and have had nearly every pizza on the menu.
I absolutely adore the sourdough base. I'm a firm believer in "trash base, trash pizza" and this base does not disappoint. Eating the plain ol' crusts are just as enjoyable as eating the pizza itself. It bubbles up gorgeously in their oven. The toppings are fresh and of a high quality, never overloaded and the toppings to sauce to dough ratio never misses a beat.
And the tiramisu? Do yourself a favour and treat yo'self to this absolute delight.
SPQR, ILY.
Dined here a few times now! Awesome vibe and ambiance. Great people. Funky music. Phenomenal pizza. And tiramisu! Top notch service. You’re missing out in life in general if you haven’t stopped by this little gem. Bless !!
Amazing. Definitely one of my favorite pizza places in Melbourne. Service is great too - really friendly and attentive. A great place to grab a casual bite in the city.
The service was brilliant, the attitude of the staff was super friendly and upbeat. The pizza was amazing and the gnocchi was delicious. Would defiantly go back!
Great place for a work lunch. We ordered 3 pizzas to share amongst the 4 of us. They were quick and delivered hot with delicious melting cheese. We enjoyed the pepperoni, margarita and capricciosa. The staff were very knowledgeable and with plenty of seating in a relaxed restaurant setting we all enjoyed our meals and looking forward to checking out more of the menu and the beers too!
Cosy, casual and great vibes. Awesome little pizza spot in Melbourne, the margherita is my go to, simple and delicious flavours. Wood fired gnocchi is also a must! Either as an entree or main.
Really enjoyed my Parma pizza, both times I’ve come it’s been consistently good. Nice rich sauce and not stingy on the topping! Friendly staff and warm, chilled atmosphere. Moscato was nice but small serving. Gnocchi was also tasty, wish there was an option with meat.
Love, love, love the pizza and antipasto platters here! I’ve been here so many times and have never been disappointed. Highly recommended 👍🏼
- Staff are really enthusiastic and knowledgeable of the menu.
- The base and crust is amazing. Thin and delicious. Seriously delicious.
- I liked the modern cool atmosphere with the DJ.
Highly recommend the Monday special of a Margarita pizza and a glass of wine for $15! I'm also a fan of their nutella dessert pizza.
Some of the other pizzas are a bit overdone toppings wise, but the base is solid and, if you keep to the simpler offerings, well executed.
I love pizza by the slice options (sometimes you just want to snack, or go on a pizza odyssey!), so SPQR is a welcome addition to Melbourne's pizza scene.
The interior here is great, and we were greeted by a smiling face which is always nice. The pizza? Delicious. My wife and I tried the Margherita and Pepperoni slices, at $5 each (not too bad, given the quality). Both had tasty, well cooked bases to support the toppings, which were plentiful, and fresh. This place looks like it would be great at night, with a pizza DJ set near the entrance - so I'll definitely return to try a few more slices while I listen to some tunes.
Super fast service - we were able to get a table without a booking on a Thursday night. When we ordered our pizzas, it was as if the waiter spun around and viola! There was our pizza! Ok maybe it was a 5min wait, but no longer than that! Great place to bring the family. Pizza was yummy - crispy thin base with lots of topping. Well done SPQR!!
Incredible service, friendly helpful staff who went out of their way to make us feel really welcome, organised a high chair promptly and advised on the menu for dietary requirements. Hands down best Gluten free pizza in Melbourne, cannot wait to come again!
Have been here twice now for work lunches and both times have been impressed by quality and variation if the pizzas. Best wood wired pizza in the city?? Probably not but pretty close!
We had the Margherita pizza, gnocchi and Nutella pizza. Let me tell you, this was the best pizza and gnocchi I have ever had. The service was so attentive as well! It was a bit awkward being spoken to constantly, but they were friendly so it was good! Lovely little atmosphere as well.
Fabulous antipasto plate - mix of cheeses, meats, pickles and warm pizza base. $30 for 4 and impressive. Tasty pizzas - nice to see as many 'white' pizzas on offer as 'red'. Slightly soggy in the centre (wrong mozzarella) but the tastes outweigh. Antipasto and 2 pizzas enough for 4 - $80 plus wine (around $40-$45 per bottle).
Warm. welcoming atmosphere, very friendly staff.

Very Nice!
Busy Friday night, full of people, full of atmosphere and people having fun.
Pizzas were right up there with the very best Melbourne has to offer in a very competitive pizza market.
Base was superb and toppings, great!
Service was quick, super friendly and accommodating.
The only criticism I would have was that they only serve Italian reds by the glass, but after all it's an Italian restaurant.
Would definitely return and recommend.
We'd seen this place advertised around the CBD quite a lot so were pleased when we walked past and "found" it. The interior is nice and spacious and there's a cool mural by Makatron on the wall where you can wait for take away pizza along with a record playing DJ station. With a legit pizza oven and Napoli style pizzas with either a red or white base, this place has a great feel and the pizza very authentic.
Fantastic thin crusted pizza with a variety of toppings offered. Great beers on tap with a cool vibe. One of the better pizzas in the CBD. Would go back
We went on Margherita Monday - $15 for a margherita pizza and glass of house wine (or beer). It was really lovely - authentic Italian pizzas, and great service. Thanks so much - would happily go back again.
My mother and I went on Margherita Monday. Great value!!! Margherita pizza and house wine or beer for $15 and it was so filling.
Lots of flavour, felt like I was back in Sorrento again. Lovely house wine and atmosphere was great.
I understand why it was so busy !!!
Seriously good pizza! Have been meaning to check this place out since it has opened. The restaurant has a very cool casual atmosphere which is perfect for the style served. The also have a DJ booth with good tunes going which is a modern touch for the traditional wood fired napoletana style pizza's served here! They offer a small selection of starters, red and cheese base pizzas and a couple of desserts. There is nothing complicated about the menu - I ordered the Gamberi Pizza which had a san marzano tomato base, prawns, n'dija, olives, basil and fior di latte cheese. Combination was to die for! Pizza is larger enough to feed one adult. Perfect size. Base held all the ingredients and dough has a very light texture. I would highly recommend this place for all occasions. Staff were down to earth and efficient, Will be back.
Love love their sour dough! Nice and simple toppings with great flavour! Very fast (thanks to the very hot oven apparently) and friendly service. Will go back again and again!
I'll be back! Great pizza. Good atmosphere and location. Service was good but not "in your face". Loved the tiramisu - probably the best I've had!
Two of the best pizzas we've ever had! One tomato base (Salumu), one cheese base (Tartufo).
Service was friendly, fast and appeared right when needed.
Great background music mixed by the dj on the twin deck.
Perfect for our pre-show dinner.
Good pizza
Go for red pizza selection
White pizza is not so flavoursome

Amazing pizza, service & music. Great concept! Fills a gap in the pizza market in Melbourne's CBD that's for sure. Will definitely be returning that's for sure!

Hop over to SPQR, where you can get woodfired Neapolitan pizza by the slice, great for a quick feed to satisfy your pizza cravings and hunger pangs. A 16 year-old sourdough culture and Caputo flour is combined and left to rise over 48 hours. As at other authentic Neapolitan pizza joints, SPQR’s custom-made oven cooks the pizzas in about 60 seconds to deliver crispy and blistered crusts with a bit of puff.
The service was very friendly and efficient here. The pizzas were better than other places that claim to have the best pizza like Gradi at Crown and Zero95 in that I found the middle of the base less soggy than those I had at other pizza restaurants. The ingredients on top were fresh, and the potato pizza was yum! Definitely would come here again. @dulicieux
I visited SPQR in a group of 6 for a pre theatre feed. We were actually running about 15 minutes late and I gave them a quick call and they were really friendly and accommodating. Our table was waiting for us when we arrived and drinks orders quickly taken and an order for some antipasto and a serve of their daily dip to share put through.
Amazing pizza joint! Staff are super friendly, great atmosphere situated in a cozy spot at the top of the town (easy parking and access via tram/train). There's a huge brick oven that churns out pizza every few minutes - my fav is the Tartufo with a little chilli oil. Will come back lots more!
Had a great time at this hidden away pizza joint... Super friendly staff, had a fantastic wine reccomendation & all the pizza's we tried were awesome + the music was dooooope... they spin wax!!
First things first, I have worked at SPQR as a Dj since it opened, so you may think this review is biased or sounds too good to be true, but the reality is I have not seen a harder working bunch of people dedicated to the cause of putting out genuine Napoli style pizzas and providing a great and welcoming atmosphere than these people. In a crowded market place amongst top notch competition they hold their own with grace and humour. Besides this they do their best to put out good wholesome food and drink and are learning everyday and striving always to do better. Besides this they support local small businesses like mine, the bottle recyclers who provide their glassware, local artists (check the art on the walls) and local and international producers. I love their vibe and their Margeritas are to die for. If you want a dominoes style pizza this is not the place but if you want a real Napoli style pizza, great music, drink and friendly service and a real Melbourne feel, get in!
One of those inconspicuous little spots you'd overlook, but is surprisingly decent. We couldn't get into Rice Paper Scissors (mad queue as always) and this was a handy alternative. Helpful staff, good pizza, comfortable environment. Pizza base was a little too chewy but still good.
I’ve instituted an informal rule for myself where I limit my intolerance breaches to three a week. And those aren’t three days, but rather, three snacks or meals – that handful of chips that are laced with onion or garlic powder, the bowl of ramen that I allow myself to eat once every few months, the cauliflower fritters my mum makes that I can’t resist eating. By this point in the week, however, I’m usually sitting between 10 and 11 intolerance breaches because there are too many things I can’t resist eating. As I said, it’s a fairly informal rule.
Great pizza and great staff!! The calabrese pizza is just the right hotness!! Good selection. Will return. Music and ambiance good for a pre theatre dinner
Funny DJ in the background but generally high quality pizza with an excellent amaro list.
Prices about the same as every other good pizza place.
Cozy enough for a couple's night out.
This is literally the only pizza place I have ever reviewed. I came onto Zomato JUST to review this pizza place so I'll let you just IMAGINE how good it is. You're welcome.
Really enjoyed my night at SPQR! Beautiful authentic woodfired pizzas, great entertaining service and a boozy tiramisu to finish off. Such an inviting and warm space to enjoy a night out with great company. Will absolutely be back for another pizza ASAP.
Took a group of 4 here for dinner and everyone loved it. I'm celiac and it was simply the best GF pizza I've ever had outside making my own. They even have the GF Peroni beer. Creative toppings and a fantastic control over flavor and texture combos.
I'll be back again (and again).
If you're after a Neapolitan style pizza go and check it out. The crust was perfectly cooked and fluffy, and the side salad of Broccoli is something you'd get a cumulus or similar. The DJ playing music is a nice novelty but won't be to everyone's taste
Stumbled across this fantastic new Pizzeria in between Exhibition and Spring streets. It's a Scandinavian style place with an open plan bar (quite country-ish) and has an old school feel with its record decks just as you walk in. Ps apparently they do Open Deck Wednesday's so head on down if you want to "spin".
Woodfired Pizzas are absolutely on point - authentic, fresh ingredients and not over the top. We chose the Margherita but added Mushrooms & the Parma which was predominantly ham, cheese and rocket. Perfect size & would continue to go back. Herb focaccia was a little strong but I'm just nitpicking there.
Staff casual and friendly - waiter kneels down to take your order which is first sign of warmth and pride if you ask me. Love.
I'm Italian, and I tell you that SPQR would be a great Pizzeria in Italy as well!!! Best pizza i've had in Melbourne! It made me miss Italy!!! Soooo good
Great new addition to CBD. Service friendly and speedy making a quick lunch very viable. Space terrific - looks great for dinner too. Pizza base one of the best I have ever eaten. Want to try a few more toppings before I comment on them but so impressed with the base I will return next week .
I am a fan if bianca pizzas and can recommend the formaggi -good mix of cheeses. I found the pork and fennel -a fav if mine too bland. As this place becomes more popular wait times at lunch are becoming problematic -over 25 mins wait for a non sit down snack too long for me which is a pity as a shared pizza a perfect quick lunchtime catch up. Will aim for less busy times.
Nice and fluffy pizza bases with a good chewy bite.
My favourite was the Amatrice with the guanciale pork cheek ham with the tasty San Marzano tomato base and the herby basil.
Would have been nice if the toppings on the white pizzas were a bit richer.
Fast and friendly service too. Our table of 6 were seated by noon, and out at 1pm for Friday lunch.
Pretty quiet when we popped in for lunch.ordered the marinara which had great flavour and a good Base. Staff friendly and overall a good experience.
