A lovely little restaurant with views over the Yarra and Southbank, The Deck is a great spot for an afternoon glass of wine, some delicious brunch or a tasty dinner. As part of the Southgate complex, it's easy to find; and it gets really busy on weekends.
With lovely service, and a friendly atmosphere; we often pop in here for a drink after visiting the art precinct. In Summer it's amazing sitting out on the deck in the sun, watching the people go by below. Whether it's for a romantic dinner, or a catch up with a group of friends, the Deck is a really pleasant venue to visit.
This restaurant has a relaxing cozy ambience and the waiters are friendly. Nice to see complimentary bread which went so well with the olive oil balsamic vinegar dip. Our first course was grilled calamari - it was perfectly cooked and the sauce was peppery and delicious. We had mains of the seafood squid ink linguine and rockling fillet. The linguine was very tasty, full of flavour and generous in serving. Unfortunately for the rockling, it was slightly overcooked and I didn't think the puree went well with the sauce. Overall, the menu featured Australian or Italian style dishes , so I will definitely return for the pasta!
Great little place for a quick pre-show meal, or a leisurely one if you have the time. The eating area is quite open to the Southgate Shopping Centre, so getting a table further inside is best. The food is delicious and the service is quick. Nice place.
Service and Food + View = awesome spot!
Food was beautiful and flavoursome.
Service was excellent, attentive, conversational!
View from outside area was perfect for a romantic date!
Cost- We had 3 starters, 1 main, 2 desserts, 4 drinks total of $190.
Discovered The Deck through the MFWF Express Lunch and we're so glad we did. My house smoked ocean trout was delicious and the special I chose was confit duck leg - sensational. My companions who ordered the minute steak weren't impressed but enjoyed their entres of terrine and pannacotta. I look forward to a return visit. Lovely service makes it a pleasure.
The food coming off the pass here is exceptional, and well worthy of your hard earned, but you'll need plenty of it. The Deck is anything but a cheap night out, but the memories you'll have will stay with you. The Deck comes highly recommended at around $60 for 2 courses + a side or two :)
Nice ambience. Staff great food good quality. Been a few times and is reliable. Had both the pre theatre n al carte menu - no variance on quality.
A pretty swish and trendy bar and cafe. I was welcomed and provided water, which was a good start. Just had a croissant and coffee this time, but noted that the menu didn't have a lot of vegetarian fare. Nice ambience: low level background grooves, though there was a lot of loud people chatter too. The croissant and coffee were both good, and can't fault the service.
First time diner, informative and attentive staff, had the 2 course $40 deal with wine, great value for the quality, salmon entree sensational, blue grenadier yum and good choice of red, will be back
We thoroughly enjoyed a 3 course meal here last night for our anniversary. We were seated outside with quite a spectacular view of the Yarra and city buildings as they lit up at night. The blankets on the chairs were a nice touch and with the heating on, we were perfectly comfortable outside. Each meal of the 3 courses (6 meals in total as we each chose differently) were delightful. Fresh, flavourful and generous in size. The banana, peanut, chocolate mousse was to die for. The cheese soufflé (entree) and barramundi (main) were also highlights. Now onto the service; it was impeccable. 10/10. What a great surprise this place was. We will be sure to return and recommend to anyone looking for fabulous food and a wonderful atmosphere.
I have been to this cafe a few times mostly for business meets and the coffees are pretty good. It was once when I had the opportunity to have lamb shanks which were neatly done. Location of The Deck isnt too bad.
Great pre-theatre menu if you're at the Arts Centre for $40pp and a great view of the riverfront. I recommend the cured salmon entree and the chicken main!
I come here quite often for my coffee fix during work. Consistently good coffee, never been disappointed except once when the milk was too hot but that's fine.
Service is good too. Their baked goods are to die for, absolutely delicious. Croissants are good sized, buttery and melts in your mouth. Very good quality. Need to check out their rest of the menu.
A decent, good restaurant on this side of the river which surprisingly is hard to find. Thanks Deck for your presence. :)
Tried their express lunch a while ago @ $40 for two courses and a glass of wine or proesseco. Perfect for a slightly fancy lunch in a fabulous location. Service was excellent and everything looked beautiful. The food was nice and well prepared and cooked. Nothing incredibly different to make it stand out, but all very enjoyable. The two-course lunch is great value, in my opinion.
I came here for dinner last night with my boyfriend, and it was amazing. We had the 3 course set menu and couldn't find fault in any dish. We both had the cured salmon and pickle salad for entrée and confit duck for main. The duck was falling off the bone. Dessert I had the chocolate mousse... omg. And my boyfriend had the lime cheesecake. Dessert was the only course I remembered to take a photos of. As soon as the food came out we were ready to dig in and photos were completely forgotten about. Added bonus, the view from outside was beautiful and service 10/10.
This place is a hidden gem on Southbank. We went here on a recommendation from a friend and what a great place to eat. The service was 10/10 the food was stunning and the ambiance was fabulous with the views over looking the Melbourne skyline. I had the roast heirloom vegetables for entree which was delicious with great flavors, followed by the pork belly for main. The crackling was crunchy the pork melted in your mouth and my taste buds were waltzing on the table. I finish my meal with the lemon and rurburb dessert which didn't disappointed. I am definitely going back and will be highly recommending this place to business colleagues, friends and family.
Southgate Moveable Feasts are back this winter with a program of Sunday lunches and Monday dinners that take diners on a delicious journey across a variety of global cuisines. Showcasing three delectable courses each from a different Southgate restaurant, Southgate Moveable Feasts epitomises the changing dining trends of today as Melburnians look for new and different casual dining experiences.
Conveniently located right next door to Melbourne's Hamer Hall and Arts Centre, The Deck offers exquisitely prepared European and international inspired cuisine.
The elegant setting which features a French style charcuterie and a full wine display set the tone for a modern yet inviting atmosphere. We absolutely adored both the desserts we sampled at The Deck.
Excellent. From the moment I dealt with Robert by email prior to booking our table of 12 and the function, to the time we left after an excellent meal and evening, this restaurant and Manager offered exceptional service. We did a pre set function menu of 3 courses and the food was wonderful. Not heavy. Very pretty, Very tasty. The food was enjoyed by my friends and we could not fault the service. The wine list was discussed and their recommendations well received. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone....
Great night was had last Saturday. The food was fantastic Pork Belly, Seafood Linguine and Barramundi was had by all. We were all happy with our meals. Good wine list. Sitting outside on the Deck is a must on good nights. We'll be back.
I have to say though, The Deck greatly exceeded my expectations overall. You know they’ve done well when my only serious complaint is that they didn’t have any pear ciders. Highly recommended, unless you’re a vegetarian.
Diner From Brunswick
+4.5
Enjoyable night out with family. After an initial hiccup (no booking recorded), we had a lovely meal with our daughters. We chose a 2/3 course set menu for $40/$50 PP. The food was tasty, balanced and good portions provided. The restaurant generously provided a round of drinks and side salads as recompense after the booking issue. Service was attentive. We will be back.
Out of the Way and Sensational. What a great little restaurant this was.Attended on Melbourne Cup 'long weekend' and hands down one of the best feeds backed by excellent service we had whilst in Victoria. We opted for the two course $40 menu.
Entrees, recommend the salmon and salad entree - simple, fresh flavours and not over the top or too filling. A simple dish but done so well. Exemplifies the concept of good produce, left to do the talking. The other entree was the terrine - it was also good and there was lots of it, but didn't reach the heights of the salmon.
Mains, the pork belly. Wow. Small portion but probably one of, if not the best, piece of pork belly ever to cross my lips and I've had a few in my life. The crunchiest piece of square skin, the size of a cigarette packet laid in top of a juicy, delicious slab of perfectly rendered pork. This is how you do it folks. Go to the Deck for a lesson in how to cook a piece of pork and do it absolute justice. The other winner was the ocean trout. As a general rule, I never order it - sickly, farmed things with slime on the outside and weak, tasteless flesh. But, I thought, it's time to give it another go. Gee, was I rewarded in spades. This was a brilliant piece of fish served with a fairly simple salad but the whole thing was just excellent. Has restored my faith in trout.
I still can't quite comprehend how we got food that good for that price, but there you go. Will make this a regular for lunches when back in Melbourne.
The Deck are to be congratulated on their professional and friendly service . They were kind enough to accept our breakfast booking of 20 after many many rejections by other restaurants in the CBD. The staff were friendly and catered to all our needs without fuss. The breakfast fare and coffees were great. Highly recommended and we will definitely be back! Thank you
I’ve always enjoyed The Deck at Southgate on a balmy
Melbourne night. The Deck part of the
restaurant looks over the river and city skyline and is very pleasant. The food is very delicious and the staff
attentive and friendly. We had the
Charcuterie selection with pork and prune terrine and a chicken liver
parfait. For mains I had the Duck breast
with smoked orange and baby fennel which was really complementary to the dish. As a side we had very yummy heirloom carrots
in tahini. Dessert was crème caramel
with pistachios that were delicious, crunchy and soft all at the same time. I highly recommend a visit to The Deck.
SIMPLY AMAZING!. Just had hubby's work function at The Deck Southgate. The food is simply amazing! Great flavours and fantastic presentation. It's the first Christmas function I've attended with hubby's work where everyone left the restaurant in agreement of how great the place was! Thanks Rob and the team for your exceptional service and great food! Whether you're looking for a function venue or a fancy dinner out, look no further!
Louisa and Robert The Deck. From the minute we entered the restaurant we knew we had made the right decision. The food was exquisite, the service outstanding and the view and the advice about visiting Melbourne was second to none. An excellent restaurant at a reasonable price. Sisters from Perth.
Outstanding service and food!!! We were a group of 10 without a booking and they organized the best table outside with incredible views!
The food is only matched by their service. We love coming here. One of the best in the city.
Delicious!!!. Their menu had a variety of quality dishes and was cooked to perfection and presented gorgeously.
Staff were fantastic, super professional and made our night special.
Totally receomend to anyone looking for a lovely dining experience.
Always surprises to the upside. Without doubt the best restaurant in Southbank. Do not be misled by the layout (from the outside it doesn't seem to seat many guests here) - the food is always extremely well presented, and exceptionally rich in flavour.
Not the sort of place to come to if you want a hearty, home-cooked style meal (you know...comfort food) - but certainly the place to go if you either want to impress someone (even yourself), or just enjoy extremely well prepared food.
It's not exceedingly cheap, but given what these guys plate up, I still consider it value.
The staff are always courteous, knowledgeable and friendly.
I can't and won't pick a single item off the menu to recommend....I've probably dined here 20 to 30 times...so I consume much of what appears on the menu. As a local (and knowing many others in the area) - this is one of the preferred venues around.
Always nice on a warm evening to book a table outside, with a view over the yarra an into the city, and just relax and watch the people walk on by.
I just wish they'd open for breakfasts on the weekend.
Great place pre show dinner. Great service and food! Ideal for a place to eat prior or post a show nearby. Our waiter understood and made sure we got there on time, and we didn't feel rushed - well done!!! We didn't have the express dinner menu option available, which I thought looked good but we opted for duck terrine, spanner crab and seafood marinara - all the food was great. The atmosphere is cosy but not cramped - We really liked this restaurant and we'll be back!
We went here last night for a 'pre show' dinner which they cater for by offering a special of 3 courses and a glass of wine for $50, which was great value. The service was good, all of the waiters who served us were lovely. The food was delicious, the rainbow trout dish maybe a little on the small side, but as a 3 course meal it was ok. Overall it was a very nice dinner, great if you are heading to a show afterwards.
Thumbs Up for this one. What a great night this restaurant gave my small group. Delicious food attentive service a great night cannot recommend highly enough.
Great view, amazing service, amazing food and really reasonable prices for such a great restaurant/bar. Definately recomend this for anyone looking to take guests somewhere to impress. It's rather small, but that's the charm! If you sit outsit on the deck they have plenty of heaters to keep you warm.
Amazing food, tremendous service. Wine knowledge exceptional. Will be back, again and again!
A favourite. For pre-show dinner or post-show supper at Southbank highly recommended. A compact, but varied menu choice with good service and a good setting. Great for a relaxing Sunday lunch as well.
Best service by far in all restaurants I've tried in the cbd. Good food and great staff. Five stars for service, food 4.5.
Excellent service from a very friendly and accommodating staff. It was, by far, the best customer service I've received making the whole dining experience memorable for me and my friends. We'll definitely come back :)
Nice Place, Good Food, Liked It. Went here for lunch and had a lovely meal. The portions are on the small side, but enough to fill you up without you feeling sickly full. Although if ordering from the entree menu, order a side or somthing else as they are small portion sizes. I had the cauliflower, scallop and crispy bacon risotto and it was AMAZING and it was actually a HUGE plate of food. I couldn't finish it. Highly recommend this place, great food, good wine list and attentitive service.
Strange location. Was a bit disappointed with the location- half the restaurant is exposed to the rest of the shopping mall and the other barely looks onto the water. Also found it bizarre there wasn't a toilet so we had to walk through the mall to find one. The bar and kitchen is the same size as the eating area and this makes it very small. however the linguini I had was delicious as well as the chocolate brownie. The staff were also very friendly and attentive.
Satisfying dining experience. My husband and I went to the deck last night after having been to the previous location, where we had a fabulous experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. True, the view was not as good as the previous location but there is a view, just sit out on "the deck" or ask to be seated with view.
The food was great, value for money with very tasty flavour combinations and decent portion sizes. The wait staff were knowledgable, friendly and attentive, going out of their way to chat about flavours and ingredients.
Great restaurant in a part of the city teeming with competition. Will return!
Beautiful dinner!. Had a wonderful experience on Saturday night. Small, intimate dining room, great waitstaff who were more than helpful & knowledgable. The food was amazing, my favourites were the chilli clams & the duck breast. I can't wait to come back & dine on the deck area in summer.
Great for pre-theatre dinner. Lovely food and professional attentive staff. Good value
Beautiful food and service in a great location near the Arts Centre. I can't believe I found a place that satisfies my fussy mother and myself.
Sensational. Great view, great staff, great place!
Holy smokes! This joint is pretty much perfect! They have got the service down pat so well. Just smooth and professional... And the food was so well cooked too. The lamb was some of best lamb dishes I've ever had. Just. Basic . Lamb. Let the quality meat do all the work withhout too much sauce and seasoning. Good portion too. I will be back for sure!
Perfect night !. Well I've got to say that "The Deck" certainly lived up to my expectations, with 5 kids we relish the chance to get out on our own for a beautiful meal "kid free" and we found the food exceptional! The pork belly entree was to die for, cooked to perfection, the trout and duck mains were delicious full of flavour, witlof salad and beetroot salads were a winner, Id come back just for them! For dessert the creme brulee was up there with one of the best we've ever eaten and banana parfait was so good I would have licked the plate , all in all its a lovely spot, quite intimate , but casual enough to not be stuffy, waitstaff were brilliant, no complaints my score.... 8.5/10 will definitley return!
I had a great dining experience at this fine eatery. The food was exceptional, especially rainbow trout and blood orange soufle. It was a cosy, relaxed experience with a pretty view. The night was made very special by our waiter, very sleek, friendly & cool (Ray Ban glasses) Anyway, I'll be back! Thanks Rob (Ben Stiller lookalike) and Louisa, you have great staff! Yum....
How so I start?? I love this restaurant!!! We come here at least twice a year for the past 6 yrs. Attentive service, great location, romantic ambience, honest and quality food and excellent desserts!!!!! Thanks you to all staff at The Deck as is it always a pleasure to dine at your restaurant.
Great surprise. We found this restaurant was the only one which could accept us on a busy Saturday night. It worked out to be a fantastic venue, with a good table facing the Yarra and terrific food. All the photos from fellow Urbanspooners are spot on, the Duck main -Breast, and confit+foie gras roulade- was one of the best I had, and the Blood Orange Soufle was perfection. Service was good and efficient, the soufles came within 15 minutes of ordering.
Great food and good value lunch deal but pity about the service. Unfriendly waiters can really spoil the mood.
Little gem. We had a good meal at this restaurant last night (group of 10). This little gem certainly stands out from the crowd of over-priced and low value eateries along the Southbank strip. Service and attention to detail were great and the main meal and side salads were very tasty. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends and look forward to visiting again.
Consistently excellent!. I took my then-fiancée to the Deck for our anniversary last year and we were both impressed by the quality of both the food and the service.
The oysters came with a sweet chilli granita and lime which worked a treat. I was a bit skeptical about the chilli granita at first but I was positively surprised how well the combo worked. The duck breast and foie gras roulade was one of the best dishes I've ever tasted and the rest was great too (home-made prawn tortellini, fantastic mixed dessert platter). The Armagnac came in a huge heated balloon glass so that I could smell the top notch drop from over a meter away. Bliss!
That was why we decided to have our wedding dinner at the Deck as well and I couldn't have made a better choice. We got the best spot on the balcony, overlooking the Yarra, away from the rest of the restaurant. The wait staff was exceptionally attentive, fast and friendly (if a little young/inexperienced) and the manager (Louisa and Roberto) catered to our every wish. The sweetcorn soup with pumpkin seed oil is to die for, as was the the salmon. The price for everything was reasonable considering the the location and quality of the food and service (just over $80/head for a 3-course menu and lots of wine and top-shelf European spirits like Armagnac and Brunello grappa).
All up I can highly recommend the Deck for a romantic dinner for two as well as a great venue for functions. Will definitely go again!
Lovely. Even though the weather was a bit ordinary, the verandah was still nice with a see through canopy pulled down. The staff were very friendly and reliable and the food was gorgeous. Relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended.
Constantly Impressive. This place never disappoints. It's constantly fantastic. The staff are great the view is fantastic and the food is just great. They do a really good 'pre-show' deal for eating earlier that is worth a try if your concerned about price.
Seemingly stuffy on first impression, the Deck quickly warms into one of the most pleasant dining experiences.
Impeccably attentive service without being obtrusive, the wait staff are friendly and engaging. The food is delicious and confidently inventive.
A new personal favourite is the gnocchi braised rabbit with pistacchio; light and substantial potato parcels with meat that shreds so delicately. Paired with a sparkling Italian from the bar, it's melt in the mouth experience that will stick in your mind for days and your tastebuds craving for longer. Highly recommended.
An amazing family night out, with food that was delicious, fresh, tasty, vibrant and served with a smile! Atmosphere was perfect! Beautiful summer night at such a lovely location! Different types of meals to please all dietary requirements. Enjoyed the evening, the atmosphere and the food! Just perfect! I've also been back another 2 times since. Definitely a night out for anyone. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed :)
We were here for a pre-theatre meal. $45 for 2 courses and $55 for 3, with a glass of wine. My friend and I both chose the Tuna tartarte and the trout. Both dishes were delicious, the trout so smooth and naturally tasty. The Deck is very popular for pre theatre, the service is prompt and courteous. Sourdough bread is complimentary, and so good. Definitely will return.
Great food great service, perfect for a pre show dinner. The ballet girls & I love it.
Nice little spot to escape the hussle of South gate. Food is very much modern dining but the staff are friendly and welcoming. Good range of lunch and dinner options. Also an easy place just to meet someone for a coffee (or drink pending the time of day). Very good value for money considering the quality of the food but you do pay for the quality
We enjoy our time at the Deck. With family, pre-theatre or just the Wife and I the experiance is always pleasurable. The staff are friendly and attentive and the atmosphere is always welcoming.
On our last dining experience we ordered the Rigatoni Ragu, Spanner Crab linguini and shoe string fies. The fries were lovely, crispy on the outside, fluffy inside and lightly salted. The Ragu was full of chunky sausage and flavoursome mince. The only downside was the crab. This time it was a little bit complicated with the flavours. The crab was fighting for attention and not always winning.
But still a great night and highly reccomend.
We had a lovely evening. Great service. Excellent food, we had the lamb shoulder. Absolutely delicious!
Highly recommend!
