Review Ombra Salumi Bar - Melbourne

Judy L
Lovely staff and restaurant. We booked for a dinner at 7pm and the table was all ready for us. The interior is dimly lit so the vibes were very nice. We ordered the gnochetti (must try) and the prosciutto, pear pizza which was very filling. They also gave us a cute Mother’s Day gift which was very nice of them.

Great little restaurant two sections down stairs and upstairs a little more formal upstairs tasty food slightly focused on sharing plates, you can order individual meals. Worth the visit.

A beautiful restaurant with fantastic food and excellent service that doesn’t disappoint. Third time visiting Ombra and I’ve made it a priority to stop by when I come to this lovely city. The antipasti, pizza and pasta selection here is to die for - it’s all so good! The gnochetti with speck is amazing, and although they didn’t have the squid ink risoni this time, I’d suggest everyone to try it if it’s available because it is 10/10

Really fantastic early dinner. Service was exceptional and everything was delicious. We will be back for sure

I think first impressions are always important, we were recommended this place by a friend, we checked in our QR codes but had to show 3 different people our vaccinations within 1 minute.. fair enough. May I suggest to just check it 1 time at the front door like other guests? Service wise I think they could be a little more hospitable, we booked a table of 4 & were shown to a bar table with 2 settings.. A bit awkward & unorganised, considering they could have set our table up within the 1 minute we checked in with 3 different people. Very quick to clear our table as I was still eating a few things.. Food wise, we ordered the specials as most items on the menu were items we can get in other places. The bread & paté with caramelised onions were amazing, pizza & pasta not so special.. pasta was a bit undercooked & Pizza a bit soggy. Considering it's value of price, it was a bit disappointing, not sure what the hype was about this place. Overall venue was nice, however wished same was reflected in the staffs. Food could be improved for its value.

One of the best Italian joints in Melbourne! The Prosciutto pizza is to die for. And the ribs - oh my goodness. Capped off with a couple of world class desserts - the cheesecake & salted caramel buns were amazing 🤩

On the dessert alone ... If you like your #tiramisu and #profiteroles ... Coffee is not bad even with weekend surcharge ... Guy Grossi desserts are classically good, not overly sweet, and just right ... One of the best spot on Sunday arvo in the City.

We went on a Sunday afternoon with a small group of five. Had the degustation which was generous and tasty. Service was friendly, cocktails and wine were nice and the food was good. Highlight for us was the bread and oil ha!

We visited for the first time before a theatre show after randomly finding them online. The vibe is really laid back but they take their food, wine and customer service seriously. There were plenty of friendly and attentive staff on shift who all appeared to get along really well and danced and sang along to the 80's music cranking as did majority of the patrons! The rustic-style food is excellent with ingredients freshly prepared within view of the high bar-style tables. The cured meats and cheeses are sliced in view right next to the bar so you know it's going to be fresh and delicious. Huge ovens crank out delicious, light but crispy-based pizzas which are a great size to share (or not!). I'd expect the quality of foods would be consistent across all Grossi group establishments, but the lower end price point of Ombra makes it the perfect place to go if you're looking for a relaxed place to go before a show or a quick bite to eat after a day in town. Will definitely be back 👌🏻

Went for a drink and snack after a show. Lovely wine, food, great service. Complimentary tasting plate between 4:30 & 6:30 and great music added to a very nice afternoon. Will definitely return.

Fabulous food. Great drinks and GF bread to die for. I'd go back for the gf bread alone. The salami platter was also something I'd have again and again.

Some friends and I had the Mamma’s Menu last night for my best friend’s Hens Dinner upstairs. The food was absolutely incredible – we loved the calamari in particular as well as the salami tasting platter. Nothing was too much trouble – we asked to make sure that we had some of the delicious salted caramel profiteroles for dessert and the staff went over and above to make sure that our Bride to Be didn’t eat anything she was allergic to. We were impressed by the overall service and quality of the food – we’ll definitely be back soon!

We stumbled across this wonderful place on our way to the comedy festival. What a gem. Incredibly warm and friendly service. We felt really looked after. Excellent food and . Great value. We will be back!! Our new regular :)

Awesome place, great service, beautiful food, stepped in for a 'nibble' and left three hours later - full and satisfied. Will definitely visit again.

The service was just so wonderful last night and the food delicious. We had a big group and the staff were so accommodating. Thanks so much

Nothing special Slow service Set menu overrated

Chiara, Paolo and Gianmaria could not have been more welcoming or attentive; it adds so much to any restaurant experience when the staff are so genuine; hospitality is so often anything but, but not here. Delicious food and the Ciro was absolutely excellent.

I booked Ombra for a function, I explained that we just wanted to come in for wine and a few cheese boards and was told that would be fine. Then on the night I was told we would have to order from the set menu at $45 a head. I explained that was the first I was hearing of it (despite phoning several times to update numbers during the week) a second person came up and rudely tried to insist again. Even though I responded politely, and it was the venues fault for failing to inform me the waitstaff were incredibly rude and gave such poor service for the rest of the night. Really disappointed.

Awesome food and service. I can't pronounce or spell the stuff I ate but it was all extremely tasty!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND - gnocchi and prosciutto pizza

Gnocchi was extremely silky-smooth and delicate, and also bursting with flavours! 💯 Prosciutto pizza was super good and we also enjoyed other dishes. Will definitely be back soon!

Had a lovely time dining here. Perfect atmosphere for a date or dinner with friends, not too quite but not at all noisy. Service was attentive. Really enjoyed the food.

Amazing food and lovely ambience. Guy Grossi is always friendly and appreciative when you choose to dine at Ombra. My favourite pizza and pasta!
Jim Fuoco
This place was decent ... Good and friendly service but food just ok. Oysters tasted unfresh, most other food was good but not amazing. This place definitely goes in the 'good' Italian restaurant category, though lower end of it.

I usually love this place and have been back many times, however was disappointed with the service this visit. I booked 3 weeks in advance for a table for 6 people (xmas lunch with clients) and could see 3 other large tables set up for bookings upstairs too - a busy friday lunch time in Dec, but only one waitress to serve the entire upstairs level. The service was really slow, the waitress kept apologising for the wait and I felt sorry for her because she really was just doing her best. There really needs to be more floor staff rostered on. I’ll think twice before returning for a lunch with clients now.

This.Places.Bangs.

Highly recommend you start with a mix of Salumi & cheese (off menu).

And share as many Cicchetti as your stomach will allow....the croquettes are a must have.

The pizza was crispy and light, the richness and quality of the meats really gave it that extra something. The gnocchetti was such a surprise to the tastebuds.

Excellent suggestion of wine by the staff and the ambiance is just perfect. Either a catch up with friends or a serious date.

AND surprisingly cheap too.

On my list of regular returns.
We loved 😍
All dishes here were amazing! The duck liver parfait was delicious and was a very generous serving size. The waitress was lovely and kept topping up our crackers and bread. The meat and cheese selections were delicious. We also ordered the ragu pasta which I would highly recommend.

We disliked 😖
We wanted a sweet wine bottle to share but they only had one bottle of moscato. I was completely surprised when the bill came and the bottle was $95!

Overall the meal was a little pricey and we had ordered less food than the recommended.
FoodieFlayva
Average at best.

If you want a good Salumi board, I would advise taking a trip to DOC Deli, Carlton, and buying your own.
Spend $36 at Ombra for average Salumi, or spend $36 at DOC for some of the best cuts of Salumi freshly sliced before your eyes.
I am sure the decision is quite obvious.

The Pizza was the only shining light for this place.

Cool and cozy Italian restaurant! I had a very relaxing 😌 time here, the sharing plates were interesting and delicious! Recommend the Cauliflower and Mussels 😋
Hans Moleman
Cosy little Italian eatery and bar. Décor gives the feeling of authenticity. We shared a Salumi selection platter with warm bread. Separately we had the Rigatoni with Ox Tail Ragu, and the Gnocchetti Tirolese. Could not fault any of the food. Well prepared, simple and quite delicious. Service was attentive and will return

All the meals that we’ve ordered were so tasty. The service was great as well. The guy who were serving us was very attentive and gave us some recommendations what to order. I must say the portion was a little bit too small. Wished the a little bit bigger :). Anyway, we were really happy with our dinner on that night. Highly recommended

While I do love this place, the food was yummy. Pizza in my opinion needed more toppings, but still yum! The service was a let down compared to previous dining experience. While they were very kind, things were missed that we ordered so we just cancelled them and drinks took awhile to come. However, because of the ambience and the food still being pretty damn tasty I’d still recommend people visit 💗
Ray
Ordered the 4 course sharing menu. For the price was disappointed. There are better sharing/feed me menus available for lower prices. Some items were ok some weren’t too great. More choice with the selection might allow me to pick things I may like. There was no dish that wowed me, but I liked the pepperoni pizza, wouldn’t pay $75 each for that though.
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: I love the ambience of this place - both upstairs and downstairs. The staff are lovely and attentive.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I especially loved the fried zucchini flowers and the porkbelly. The pork belly is delicious and crispy. I loved the pizzas - the salami pizza has a good punch of chilli while the prosciutto pizza is fresh and has lots of greens. All have good bases and fresh toppings.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: the squash and peas with mozzarella was abit bland and didn’t add much value to my tastebuds. The gnocchtini was a little soft for my liking and also didn’t have too much flavour unfortunately.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: I love the vibes of this place and I cant wait to come back and be seated downstairs to dine and wine there!

Ombra Salumi Bar is based on the ideals of preservation and enjoyment. Inspired by the ‘Salumerie’ of Italy Ombra will focus on delivering highest quality cured meats. This preservation refers to the produce as well as the preservation of lifestyle and culture. This makes the most of nature’s abundance by using techniques that for centuries have prolonged nature’s bounty through processes like drying, smoking, salting, fermenting, pickling and candying.
Whalesfoodadventure
Got the carrots, pumpkin pizza and margherita pizza. Service was abit slow however the food made up for it. Great flavours in all dishes! Pizza dough was also really delicious

It was a nice Sunday afternoon, warm and bright, so two of decided to site outside. We ordered 30g of prosciutto, a cheese to start, with Vitello tonnato. Both are very delicious. We also ordered a sausage, potato pizza, which was good too. Only problem is the wait for the pizza was very long.
Christina Mathiasz
Quite happy with the food and service here. Started of with charcuterie boards, which had a good selection or meats bad cheeses. Only negative was that after our cheeseboards, it took a long time (almost 1 hour) for the rest of our food to come out. Pizzas were delicious and crispy. The baby gnocchi dish was something I hadn't experienced before and surprisingly enjoyed. Great atmosphere - would go back.

A great place for a date night or a nice cost dinner. Amazing service and friendly staff that help you with ordering. The lighting and the decor is very cute as well. The range of cheese and meat selection is amazing. The asparagus was heavenly with the butter sauce.

Visited Ombra on a weekday night. Easy to get a table. All meat is free range! Yay! And they seemed surprised we even asked. We shared a salumi platter which was great. Wines go by the Ombra (100ml), glass (150ml), caraffe (500ml) or bottle. Caraffe isn't cheaper than an Ombra and sometimes even more expensive which is strange. They let you try the wine before they pour a whole glass and if you don't like it they'll come with another wine. Great! I ended up loving the sangiovese grom Heathcote. We shared the brocolli and the eggplant small dishes. Both were nice, not superspecial though. Then we had the oxtail which was superyum, but very small quantity considering the price. We also shared a chestnut creme brulee which was nice light and creamy at the same time.
I joked that the reason that this place is called ‘Ombra’ (‘shadow’ in Italian) is because they can’t afford lights. In the end we did like the dark atmosphere and the food and service were fantastic. The cacio e pepe pizza, as simple as it was, ended up being my fave. Would return.

What an incredible Italian place. Such a happy and intimate atmosphere. Delicious food and friendly service. The salted caramel profiteroles were outstanding- definitely a must have!
Can’t wait to go back!
Whats On The Grill?
Great little Italian wine bar/restaurant. Concise food menu but enough to keep you interested and a more extensive wine menu. Great intimate atmosphere with classic rock tunes going & fantastic staff.
Hungry Little Dinosaur
Fairly lacklustre service which was disappointing. Pizza was okay. Food was okay. But those salted caramel profiteroles were the highlight. Just amazing.

Service was hit and miss, but who cares when the food and wine were outstanding! Italian food as it should be, just like Nonna's. And the wine list, well that's another story, fantastic! Will definitely be back for more.

If you like your Italian restaurants noisy, crowded and slightly eccentric on the service front this is the place for you.

We had the salami and cheese platers to share - the hits being the wild boar with garlic and chilli and the cheddar from a Tasmania made from free range cows!

That was followed by pizza (margarita, marinara, hot and spicy) and oxtail. All excellent.

We also had affogatto, frangipani tart and the profiteroles. Once again excellent.

There is a wide range of Italian wines to choose from.

The dishes turned up at haphazard intervals.

We will be back.

My mother and I came here for their Mother's Day sharing menu on Mother's Day. For $75 dollars a head, I was really impressed as we got plenty of food.
My first impression of the place was now narrow it is- at first I was taken aback but then I realised how cosy and homely the size made this place.
One thing I have to say is the service could have been improved. All the waiters were lovely, however we spent 25 minutes there without a drink after ordering a bourbon and coke. At $15 a pop you expect them to at least remember someone ordering it and bring it out.
The first plate of cured meats, olives and homemade bread was lovely. Even my mother who hasn't been the biggest fan of cured meats in the past really enjoyed it. The proscuitto has a beautiful mild flavour and the olives were beautiful and fresh. 8.5/10.
Then came eggplant parmigiana, sliced veal and lamb ribs in Italian flat bread. Everything was delicious. My mother unfortunately bit into her lamb rib and discovered it to be almost nothing but fat with an unpleasant flavour while I got a beautiful rib so this was a shame. 7/10.
The pizza was quite delicious. I loved the combination of pumpkin and leek and the crust was perfection. Not too sure if Gorgonzola cheese is something I can get used to on a pizza though. 7/10
The roast pork with radicchio, potatoes and iceberg lettuce was great. The pork had been cooked to perfection absolutely falling off the bone in a beautiful rich sauce with aromatic spices. At first I didn't like the radicchio but it's bitterness served to cut through that rich sauce nicely. Loved the addition of the lettuce, it was dressed deliciously and loved the refreshing crunch and taste it offered. The potatoes I could take or leave. 8.5/10
Dessert was really divine. The frangipane tart was delicious and the salted caramel profiteroles I found, while having a strong taste of salt, to be incredible with great pastry. The vanilla ice cream was also delicious and rich in vanilla flavour I could have eaten a whole lot more of that! 9/10
Overall the food was delicious as to be expected and for a reasonable price of 75/a head you can't complain. Would recommend!
had never heard of this place, but was very pleasantly surprised, nice Italian sandwiches/wraps (lunch only I think), also nice selection of sliced meats and had their special of the day - lasagna, which was rich and flavorful. Definitely will be back and recommend it.

Second time here, first time 6 months ago. Quality remains the same. Pizza was really good, light, firm dough, not oily and good flavour on toppings. We had the potato pizza and it tasted great. Also had a pasta which was tasty. Last time we did the original feed me option which was huge amounts of food and has changed on the menu now. Quick service and mid Melbourne prices.

Can be hard to find a good place to eat in the CBD. They can often be hit or miss, and service questionable. We have a few favourites, so when we try a new one it is fantastic when it is as good as Ombra. Lovely service, great food and fantastic pizzas! Vibe is also really nice. Will be back for sure.

Loved Ombra Salumi Bar. Cute little venue with a great vibe and delicious menu. Between 2 we shared the olive ascolane, the gin cured kingfish with orange, the porchetta with slaw, and the iceberg and oregano salad. Perfect amount of food. I was especially impressed with the porchetta. Probably the best I’ve had- it was really flavoursome and not fatty at all.
MELB JOURNAL
Cheap, humble, Italian food, in the heart of Melbourne CBD - near the theatre. What more could you ask for? This tight little Salumi Bar replicates those of Italy. Small but packed full of flavour. The Chef’s choice menu for $55 is so filling and gives you a bit of everything to enjoy. Paired with an aperol spritz and you can close your eyes and pretend your on vacation!
Queen Of Food
Delicious, authentic, homely Italian food. A great place to go for dinner with friends! Everything was well seasoned, well balanced and perfect for sharing. The service was also wonderful and friendly! Look forward to returning!

This was the second time I had visited Ombra. The setting of the resturant itself is amazing and rustic.
We ordered drinks that took 20 minutes to bring up & they also stuffed up one of the drink orders. No drama except I had managed to finish my entree before my cocktail arrived.
The eggplant fritte were AMAZING - i could have eaten 10 serves!!
The pizzas arrived and looked amazing. Unfortunately, any pizzas with a tomato base (Margherita, Procuitto) were soggy as! The crusts were great, but to pick up your pizza to eat - you lost all your topping 🙁
I would go back though as I have tried non tomato based pizzas and loved them!
A great stop before a theatre show.

I've been to Ombra several times and have always enjoyed both the food and the friendly waiters. I had a disappointing experience there tonight when my friend and I went up to the cashier to pay our bill. I took my half full bottle of Coke with me which I'd PURCHASED with my meal, put it on the counter so I could get my wallet out. The arrogant cashier snidely said, "Oh, so you brought your own bottle of Coke with you. How NOVEL." assuming I'd brought in a Coke that I'd purchased elsewhere. I didn't get an apology when I explained that I had bought it with my meal and I was simply taking it with me, just a snooty dismissal. AS IF I would be cheap enough to bring a bottle of Coke with purchased from somewhere else when my meal came to $75 including a tip!!!

Further, when my friend and I asked to split the bill of $147 in half and asked how much for each of us, instead of calculating it for us, he rudely said "You work it out, I'm not going to make it that easy for you". Wow, Ombra, where did you get this nasty piece of work from? And is that how you should treat customers who have just spent $147? I definitely won't be dining there again, so I hope your rudeness was worth it :) I can get better customer service from my local pizza joint at a fraction of the cost and without the bad taste in my mouth.
Melbourne Epicure
Really liked this place. It is tiny but really lively. Service was super casual and friendly. Food is very well executed and tasty. With modern and classic Italian dishes on the menu. Pizzas were delicious too. Really recommended.
Natasha
Lovely ambience, attentive staff, great authentic food. Had a selection of the cheese, and salumi boards and several antipasto on the side to share, highly recommend. Absolutely worth the high Zomato rating

Delicious food, amazing flavours. Recommend the meatballs, delicious marinara sauce. Nice atmosphere, with great music. Very helpful staff , pretty good service. Great variety of wine.

I've been eagerly waiting for Ombra to return from their Christmas-New years break and counting the days. A lot of other restaurants are also closed for the break, which makes it tricky to find good places to lunch when you have returned to work!
It was my first time trying Ombra based on a friend's recommendation of their potato pizza. I've heard that it can be busy so I made a booking for lunchtime on Friday. It was unnecessary this time as there were a few small groups when we arrived but still plenty of space. Ombra has two levels, downstairs seemed dim to me so I was glad to be seated upstairs with light streaming in from their gigantic window. On warmer days, they open it up - perfect for people watching!
Ambience: 4/5

We each chose a dish to share, my prosciutto loving friend chose (you guessed it!) prosciutto and fig pizza, we also ordered sausage pizza and meatballs on the side.
The meatballs arrived in a mini pot with slices of crusty bread on side. Fortunately there was 6 meatballs so that could be evenly split between our group of 3. Happily for me, my friend gave me one of his meatballs so I ate 3 (yay! Glad for his team's big morning teas hah!). We very much enjoyed the sauce of the meatballs, I only wish there was more sauce to dip the bread in!
We enjoyed the pizzas too, the flavours of the prosciutto and fig complemented the other well! The sweetness of the fig balanced the slightly salty prosciutto to my surprise. Of course I liked the sausage pizza best, it seemed like a great flavour combination! I would have loved extra sausages on top though!
Food: 4/5

Atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, we were greeted with a smile by each waiter that we passed. Our water was regularly topped up and they seemed happy for us to take out time with lunch.
Service: 4/5

Overall, an enjoyable lunch and well worth the wait! I will be returning to Ombra soon!

Came here for dinner last night after a recommendation from a friend.
Pros were the pizza & the salumi
Cons were the somewhat pushy service and the fact they forgot our pizza order / lost the docket
Overall I wouldn’t recommend eating here unless you want a quick delicious woodfire pizza or some cured meats. I also wouldn’t sit upstairs if it’s a hot day as heat really rises here!
Il Ghiottone
What more can I say other than 'mama mia?' We started off with some Aperol Spritz's which were made perfectly. We got the 'Mamas Menu' which consisted of 5 courses. Everything was fantastic, but the highlights were the potato pizza and ox tongue terrine. We could have easily been sitting in Verona or Torino. Fantastic place.
Food And People
We wanted something quick and light so we shared a Pizza and Arancino. The wine recommendation was spot on, service friendly and genuine Italian and even better...while the place had atmosphere and music playing.. it was not too loud to prevent a conversation. I would certainly come back!
Deep Dhanoa
Grossi just nails it again and again.
This is a regular lunch time haunt for me but this time I came for dinner. Great service, amazing food and wine.
Perfect for a quick bite or catch up with GF’s
Maddie Chatley
Friendly staff, quite a loud environment.
We had the bruschetta that was really tasty but expensive for only one piece
Margarita pizza was very fresh and tasty, really nice thin base
All in all nice food and cocktails but quite not worth the high price
Whenfoodiesmeet
Now this is pizza on another level!! Bresaola, artichoke, fior di latte and rocket on a lovely thin crispy base, not your conventional pizza but definitely a scrumptous surprise. The candied beets, goats curd, cos and crouton salad was also a delicious and freshing accompaniment. Sophisticated Italian that won't shed weight on your Italian? Ombra Salumi Bar is the place to be!
Tardar Sauce
Love the wines, the food and the service. We are starting to become Friday regulars at Ombra it's that good! Thanks for a great wine bar guys :)
Michael Dunne
Wasn't too impressed by this place. Very pricy for the food you get. Was expecting a little more to be honest. Wine selection is good and food was decent quality but lacked the flavour you'd expect for prices you're paying.
Grace Tan
Yum yum yum!
Excellent service, with good recommendations.
Wine went really well with the dishes
Must try: The meatballs! 👍 and the lamb ribs 👍
Ronnie Ramjet
I just don't know where to start. So much went wrong with this meal that we left halfway. The cured fish had turned (to the point where we recoiled as it was placed on the table); salumi was poor quality and stale; and, most irritatingly, 4 dishes from our order were forgotten (ironically, we asked the waitress at the time of ordering whether she was really, truly sure that she'd remembered each item we'd ordered as part of our hefty meal and she assured us that she was a pro). The manager here was sweet. But he clearly knew that some major stuff ups had occurred. It's still not good enough for what turned out to be an absurdly expensive meal for sub-par food preparation and service.
KnowingMelbourne
I really like this place. A great feel in a nice part of town. If you're lucky (which you probably will be) you'll get service with an accent as well, which you know I love 👍🏻
They have a range of Italian "tapas", let's call them, all are delicious. The pizzas are also good. I hear they do a great set menu for functions as well, with the slow cooked lamb the highlight.
DRuz
Well! Hello baby! An arm of the Grossi team this small Salumi Bar is some seriously good eats.

Theo and the team looked after us a treat, they do amazing true Italian food. I've only been lucky enough to visit Italy once but this place is on a par with what we ate there. Fantastic food and wine selection and the staff are super friendly and attentive. Apologies for the poor photos, I felt like a tool snapping photos in a beautiful small space where you should enjoy the atmosphere and vibe. I've already made an additional two bookings for Ombra in the next month, it's that good.
Vanessa Espírito Santo
I'm gonna be really honest and direct: The place offers great atmosphere, staff is amazingly friendly, nice and helpful but the food was a little below expectation for a restaurant rated above 4 on Zomato. We ordered the 3 cheeses plate and, although they were all marvelous, they lacked in quantity. I mean, you could be more generous when you charge your clients that much for 3 little pieces of cheese. Literally 😞 Then came my pizza. It tasted good but it really wasn't the best pizza I've had. It was expensive and not authentic. The night was only saved by the wine and the dessert. Wine was awesome (Bird on a wire) and the dessert was perfect, delicious! I'd love to share the name but just can't remember and the menu displayed here is not updated anymore. With so many other restaurants around, I don't think I'll come back.
Natasha Rigoni
A wonderful dining experience. My friends and I shared the 'mama' menu and we were in food comas by the end. Food was delicious and served quickly. Will definitely be back!
Bib
The food was delicious and the mama feed me was a generous amount of food. Service was good but we often were trying to get their attention to order drinks
Anguli Mala
Had work drinks & dinner here when someone suggested this place being "The place to go!!". Service was okay but not what you expect when you are spending $100 per head. Drinks were not so bad (beer, wine & whisky) but food was a let down. We all had Mamma's set menu and most dishes - except the slow cooked goat - were below par in stimulating those taste buds that you expect from a highly rated restaurant. If your idea of dining is some salami platter with unpronounceable names, then definitely go here. Some of you might think this guy doesn't appreciate subtle taste and you may be right, but 4 out of 8 people who dined with us felt disappointed. I guess there are enough pretentious people whose idea of a nice dinner is spending lots of money and getting little value out of it. We are all different and I'm glad we are so; if not the world would be so monotonously uninteresting.

Gorgeous food, gorgeous wine, and gorgeous servers. I asked for a wine recommendation with my pizza marinara, and was recommended a glass of a very special red that had been opened. I'm not normally a red wine kind of girl but it seems I've been drinking the wrong reds. I unfortunately did not catch the name of the wine (again -- when I came nearly two years back the first time I was in Australia, I had a similarly wonderful white that is no longer on the menu and whose name I cannot recall) but it was beautiful.

The pizza marinara was full of flavour -- it's amazing how something so simple can be so delicious. It did get fairly acidic after a few slices, though.

And don't even get me started on the pannacotta. There are no words for that. If I could only have that for dessert for the rest of my life I think I'd be happy. (I adore lemon desserts as a general rule and would miss them, but that pannacotta...!)

Would I come back? Hell yes. I came back after two years, it was that good the first time I ate here!
Plummy Loves Yummy
Nice little place.

Pizza base was a bit soggy.

Expensive for small amount of cheese compared to their cheese and wine competitors.

Wine was beautiful.

Great place to share a pizza and some meat balls. Very Italian with a great vibe. Would recommend for a intimate dinner experience or late afternoon lunch. Worth checking out for sure. We even ran into Guy Grossi whilst dinning.

Cocktail was so-so but Mamma's Menu was yum! Nothing over the top just simple things done well. Set menu changes but ours consisted of charcuterie, croquettes, margherita pizza, braised beef with rocket salad and roasted carrot then salted caramel profiteroles and berry tart. Not that we needed more food, but very pleased we added chicken liver parfait! Delicious, homely meals with lovely service. Keen to check out other Grossi establishments :)

Little brother restaurant of Grossi Florentino, Ombra Salumi Bar boasts an impressive food and wine menu, with smaller tapas style dishes. Although hearty and rich, didn’t seem as heavy as a whole bowl of pasta or a whole deep dish pizza. Ombra Salumi bar really hit the mark with their delicious array of tasty comfort food.

The dim lighting and soft music makes for a great date location. The high bar tables and stools do make seating arrangements less than ideal for a romantic setting though.

I sampled the following dishes:
• Meatballs with Scamorza and Sugo

• Eggplant Fritte with Smoked Aioli

• Buffalo Mozzarella, Tomato Emulsion, and Taralli with bread

• Sausages, Olives, Fennel and Fior di Latte Pizza

All dishes were packed with delicious flavour. So much so, that I couldn't pick a clear favourite dish. The only possible criticism I have is that I found the fennel to be overpowering on the pizza.

I'd love to return to try more of their dishes!

Came here with a group and were seated upstairs. Really friendly and helpful Italian waitress looked after us. We had the $45 menu and there was a very decent amount of food. My favourites were the crumped eggplants, the white pizza and the slow cooked lamb was divine. Will definitely come back and try the a la carte menu!

Came for a weekday lunch. Luckily it hadn't filled up yet when we arrived but it soon did. We had the octopus and prosciutto pizza. The octopus would have been a big one as the two pieces of tentacles served were big! It was lucky that there were two of us otherwise we would have had to share. The sauce was delicious, the octopus was a bit overcooked which left it a little bland and slightly chewy. Therefore, I personally think the octopus was a little overpriced. The pizza was one of the best I've had. The crust and base were 'all' crispy 'every single piece'. It was such a simple pizza yet it was filled with flavour. The seasoning was perfect and I did not feel overstuffed afterwards. The service was friendly and not overbearing. Overall, the price is within range for the area. The environment has a dark but comfortable undertone. It's a small space but definitely worth visiting. Will return!

Pizza and drinks with the girls....the classier kind!
Late post as it's been a while since I've last been back but on the occassions we have been, the night was always enjoyable.

SERVICE: 5/5
Could not fault the service here. Greeted as soon as you enter and shown to your table. No delays in bringing out menus, taking orders, and glasses never left empty.
Guy Grossi has not only greeted us as patrons (which is nice enough already) but he has sat down with us to have a chat and a banter...felt like we were being hosted in his home.

FOOD: 4/5
Expect your pizzas to be the authentic thin base kind, with simple fresh toppings. Just the right amount of seasoning that only enhances the natural flavours of the produce used. Perfect menu for sharing with a group.

DECOR & AMBIENCE: 4/5
Lots of dark tones promote an air of sophistication while still remaining comfortable and non-pretentious. Easy to spend hours here with friends. Definitely book to avoid disappointment.

KID FRIENDLY: No. Reserve this one for a night out with friends or a date night.

Details: The potato and olive oil pizza was incredible. I thought the base was so fluffy with fantastic texture. Also the croquettes were to die for. Went well with a glass of pinot 💟 however, for the price you are paying, do not get the calamari.... it was tiny and honestly for something that pricey I was expecting better quality and a bigger portion, same with the meat balls (nothing spectacular!).

Service: Nothing special... friendly staff of course and attentive when we needed with food coming out in reasonable time but wouldn't rave on.

Decor: So funky! I thought the venue had some exotic feel to it as if you're in another country. Good vibes!

A place where the pizzas are more Italian than Australian (or Hawaiian...). There are no Capriciosas, Supremes or thick crusts overloaded with toppings. The offerings here are all thin crust, with simple ingredient combinations that are delicious. We enjoyed the Diavola (cheese, salami and chilli) and the sausages, olives, fennel and cheese conbination most. The ricotta lemon semifreddo (like an ice cream cake) was so refreshing and well balanced. Super friendly service by our lovely waitress in a romantic setting with quiet ambiance overlooking Bourke Street.

Thank you to Jack and his crew for a lovely early dinner - warm, relaxed yet professional service, excellent food and a lovely ambience. Delicious eggplant fritti, crab pasta and baccala. It’s not just the food - it’s the warm welcome and good service that matters.

Music, music, music, turn it down! Friday late afternoon came in for some wine, sharing food and catch up with friends. The music downstairs killed the ambience of the place. Play some nice jazz, Bocelli or Frank, not Queen or The Beatles blasting in your ears. We eventually moved upstairs to eat as we literally could not hear each other. Cmon Guy, get you young staff sorted out. By the way, food was good.

Love love loved everything that came out of the kitchen! Banquet was great value and staff were friendly even though it was a manic Saturday night. Will definitely return next time we're in Melbourne

What a terrible disappointment Ombra turned out to be for me. The place had a great ambience when you walk in; timber and dark leather booths dimly lit by hipster light fitting, it looked like a place you can settle in with a few bottles of wine with friends.

The front house of staff was friendly but gave me the impression they were a bit disorganised or perhaps inexperienced. We were asked by 3 different staff member if they can help us within the space of 90 secs. This is a narrow entrance and it was like they were lining up to ask us the same thing.

Once we sat down however the friendly service disappeared and we ended up with a seriously grumpy looking waitress. This is someone who was not born with a resting bitch face mind you. She just looked like and sounded like she hates her job, hates where she worked and was probably constipated.

Our party of 4 was there to have a good time. So we made a couple of jokes amongst ourselves (quietly) about the service and proceeded to order a whole heap of different shared plates.

Being a salumi bar, you think, right, they must have outstanding salumi right? It's like when you go to the steak house, you expect outstanding steak, likewise for dumpling houses, crab shacks, you get the drift.
So when the 'grande salumi platter' came out, we were rather shocked. The prosciutto was good, but the other 3 ... well, let's just say if I was doing a blind tasting I don't think I would have picked it to be better than your woolies branded or Coles deli salami. Disappointed? Absolutely.

Then pretty much everything else that came out was ordinary, or bad and over priced. We had zucchini flowers - don't bother, black pudding frittata - awful, chicken liver parfait sandwiches - ok, s&p squid - ok, prawns - ok but terribly over priced, croquette - ok, pizzas - seriously? It has been years since I had chain store pizza, but Ombra pizza brought me right back to college days. All up for 4 of us spend over $500. The last time $500 brought me less joy was ... well, never really.

1.5 is for ambience. Go in for a glass of wine and if you must, order the croquettes. Then leave.

Had the banquet menu ($45 for 5 courses). So much food, so delicious, so satisfied (so full)! Pizzas here are amazing, the crust is thin but somehow kind of soft and fluffy. The portobello mushroom arancini balls were packed with flavour. Also, their coffee sorbet(?) is one of a kind, tastes like real latte. Ombra will be a new favourite for me.

I love coming here. My favourites are the lunch time pockets, the eggplant frites, the pizzas and the profiteroles....... The staff are the friendliest in all of Melbourne :)
Mi55Bee
Great italian food, we ordered the eggplant frites, lamb racks and 2 pizzas. Reasonably priced food for the quality, service was good and love their large variety of wine!

I really enjoyed eating here, having a nice balance between a casual yet classy dining experience. It had a very relaxed and laid back feel about it. We weren't made to rush and eat before our next courses came, but instead just sit and enjoy our food, company and atmosphere. We started with cured meats and cheese board, that were extremely enjoyable. The fried bocconchini balls were a big hit also and the quail was tasty!! We preferred to order a variety of small dishes but next time we will try the pizza! Ricotta and lemon semifreddo was delicious, there was just so much we couldn't finish it!! Would definitely be back to try the rest of their menu!

Went on Thursday with a big group of people and we did the $45pp set menu - we had a fantastic time and the amount of food you got was amazing it was really good value for money. We had dietary requirements in the group and they were easily catered for on the night. The lamb shoulder was my favourite dish but we enjoyed all of them - the pork sausage with fennel, the croquettes and the pizzas. The deserts were really good too my favourite being the crumble. Would definitely come back and it was a group favourite.

So impressed - the Mamma's set to share is such good value for really nice food. We opened with a platter of Italian cured meats and sourdough, followed by sausages and fennel. By the third course (paper thin and ultra tasty pizzas) we were satisfied, and the tender pork took it to the next level. Dessert was my fav part - omg those profiteroles and espresso ice-cream. We'll be back. The large table by the window upstairs is imho are the best seats in the house.

Shared the Mammas share plate for a substantial lunch. Sensational. Food and service great. Guy Grossi approached our table and welcomed us and son Carlo also frequented the floor and kept an eye on proceedings, including a large dressed pig delivered to the kitchen. Commendations to the staff with course timings and advice. It's as Melbourne as it gets.

I went to Ombra for the first time on Saturday. The venue itself is really nice and the staff were very attentive and helpful. We got the Mama's menu and loved every bit of it. It would've been good to have some olive oil with the bread however. We also had some awesome cocktails and wine. We're planning on returning already. Not sure why people reviewing have issues with portion size, maybe they don't understand the concept. It's not a buffet. Spend $45 on the Mama's menu and you'll be rolling out of there.

I agree with the post below
Underwhelming. Expensive. Small portions for everything else beside pizza.

Staff took away our plates before we finished. They weren't cheap plates too

Very disappointed. We are big fans of Grossi and have been to his Restaurent (Florentino) few times, but this was our first experience in Ombra.

For entree we ordered eggplant fritte; which came out as fried eggplant slices with a tasteless aioli sauce, pretty ordinary. For main we ordered two pizzas; salami and sausages. There were hardly any salami slices on the pizza, very scanty sauce and cheese, and basically that was it. The sausage over the other pizza was very chewy and very poor quality. Finally for desert the salted caramel profiteroles ...which were really salty and there was no sweetness in the cream... we felt kind of sick at the end of the meal.

Positive about the dining experience were: very friendly and helpful staff (which are the main reason I'm not rating this place as 1), pizza base and the coffee. You could easily eat meals with the same quality or even better anywhere else with half of this price...

Great selection of wines and Italian style tapas. Pizzas are good value and toppings are well balanced. Good service too. Prices generally appropriate.

I really enjoy Ombra's casual yet classy premise, making it an enjoyable place to catch up over some good quality Italian dishes and wine. I love their pezzos that are available during lunch - very reasonably priced and quality pizza pockets with four options of filling. My favourite is the calamari pezzo - it wasn't too creamy with the white sauce and the grilled zucchini was a great touch. Although the calamari itself wasn't crispy, it was tasty and texture was tender. A very close second favourite would be the traditional meatball pezzo. These pizza pockets have a good ratio of meat filling, sauce, and dough! The edges were a bit dry at times, but nothing a bit of olive oil couldn't salvage. Apart from their pezzos the eggplant chips at Ombra are a standout among all other enjoyable dishes. I love the effortless vibe of Ombra Salumi Bar. This place would be perfect for a date as well!
Tim
Very underwhelming.
Meatball sauce was good, the bread even better.
Pork slider the standout! Def get a serve of those bad boys.
That's where it ended. Meatball itself was a little bland.
Margherita pizza and a prosciutto pizza were comparable to a Mccains frozen pizza.
If your going to price up pizzas the same as +39, Doc, etc have them taste equally as good.
Venue is cool otherwise, maybe go for a drink and some nibbles.

Just loved it. Again. Staff were attentive and knowledgeable. Food was great. The salumi was varied and delicious. We have been coming here for a few years now and it has never let us down. Much better than some of the more hyped places nearby but without the attitude.
Such a great experience. Popped by on a Friday with no booking- we offered to sit outside and within seconds heaters etc had been turned on.
The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable about the food.
Wine and food get a big tick of approval.

I've been here a couple of times for lunch. $10 meatball pezzos - absolute bargain! Delicious meatballs in tomato sauce and cheese yum! I've also
Tried the calamari pezzo - very tender pieces of calamari and the white sauce is great. Definitely coming back to try the dinner menu. Extremely friendly staff and nice cosy fit out.

A lovely evening out for my wife's birthday - attentive staff with a eye for detail, delicious traditional food (Nonna's Menu) and relaxing ambience. Thoroughly enjoyed our night out - thanks Jeanette :)

Great wine selection & their pate , antipasto platter goes very well. Staff attentive. Price not that expensive considering the fact that they have to pay the staff & use quality ingredients. Inside ambiance someone resembles of rustic casual dinning however it could have been better d only negativity. Overall rating 4.3*

nice location and i like to be seated second floor where you can look out a busy city centre. I ordered terrine, meatballs, marinara pizza and some croquettes. I couldn't recall any impressive dishes except the terrine. And the marinara pizza was the simplest pizza i have ever had - as our waitress advised. Pizza itself was delightfully fluffy with crunchy base. I wish the tomato would scream louder coz it really wasn't much else there.

性价比来说,有点低,并不是十分适合我的口味,那个简单的番茄披萨也并没有说印象深刻。

Fantastic date night here at the Ombra Salumi bar. We actually tried to get into grossi without a booking, but the staff were kind enough to walk us around and arrange for us a spot at Ombra.

Atmosphere was brilliant, the waiter who served us was knowledgable and very friendly. I felt obliged to give a healthy tip at the end.

Food was great, with a wide variety. one of the salumis was a bit tough for my liking, and the crepe dessert didnt quite hit the spot after the amazing salted caramel profiteroles and 'the bombe'.

Although the bacon croquette, a 'special', was divine, it came out relatively warm and didnt have that nice steaminess you would expect from a cheese ball explosion.

Overall would definitely return.

Excellent top notch Salumi Bar by the renowned chef hatted Grossi family. Located next to my fav Italian restaurant Grossi Florentino, Ombra offers extensive wine list, casual dining ambience and delicious high quality antipasto, cheeses, pizzas, small meat/fish dishes for sharing. Highly recommend their $45/$65 feed me menu if you can't decide what to order. Generous serving and beautiful presentation. My fav was the black pudding w duck egg and side beet dish.
Bubba Gump
Attentive and predominantly friendly sevice. Good selection of Salami, salumi, cheese and wine although a little bit stingy with quantities. Felt cheated by the scallops main as it was only 3 scallops with a bit of black pudding for $24. They were very tasty but more of an entre.

Amazing. Eat here, such great food and service!
The croquette was the best I've ever eaten the burrata was so tasty and the wine was exceptional. Can't recommend it enough and I will definitely be back :)

We popped into Ombra for a glass of wine and coffee and really enjoyed both the character and atmosphere of the place. The Italian (I am assuming!) waiters were friendly and the service good. The menu looked appealing so we will have to revisit to give it a try!

I've visited Ombra a few times now and find it to be a perfect balance of quality and value - especially if you visit during aperitivo hour!

It's not unusual for me to drop in after work, mid-week with a friend, order 500ml of the house red (which is very reasonable btw), enjoy a plate or two of aperitivo and then move onto some cheese & cured meats.

The space downstairs is very intimate, the music is fitting & at a good level conducive to discussion, whilst the staff are attentive and friendly.

All together, Ombra is a winner though I admit it can be expensive if you don't take advantage of the better value options.

This place is absolute delightful establishment. I have been here on multiple occasions and it never disappoints. The wine selection is great and their food is exceptionally good quality. We had the terrine, meatballs, lamb ribs and pizza. Nothing stands out for me here because everything was so good. Simplicity paired with fresh top shelf produce is what makes this place.

Great little find. We ordered the proscuitto pizza - very tasty with a nice crispy base. We liked the meatballs too. Service was attentive and didn't have to wait long for the food to be served.

Great Italian Flavours. Enjoyed a work lunch with ten of us at Ombra. We had the long table upstairs, which was a little sqeezed-in for comfort, but that was only because the place was chockers with others enjoying the food. Wait staff were spot on, passionate about what they were serving up and kept the food coming. We had the Nonna's sharing menu, which starred a mixed plate of cured meats and slow cooked lamb. Can't go wrong.

•A great place to grab a quick feed or a drink. Plenty of choices on the drinks menu and great vibes
•We just got a quick drink and a small snack before our proper dinner later, friendly staff and good service
•Chicken liver pate - very very tasty! Interesting zucchini placed on top of the dish, probably more for visual aesthetics!
•Forgot what beer it was but served fresh, crisp and clean!

All the food was delicious! The pizza especially was a stand out, the bases were thin, crispy and tasty. Service was also very attentive upstairs and everything came out really quickly
