Wonderful evening in Paris at this Melbouorne institution. We haven’t been for ages as we have a favourite French brassiere down the road but thought we would try again. We weren’t disappointed. The John Dory and oysters were delicious and salad, spinach and pommes frittes were on point.

Great wine list as always. Overall, a wonderful evening. We will be back again.

LIT! 🔥: customer services was great here. The waiter was so funny and cheerful.
Of 5 mains we tried, the stand out dish was the duck and potatos. Duck was very succulent.
For entrees, the stand out was the foie gras.

NOT SO LIT: the 2 steaks we had were a bit chewy and not as tender as we would have liked.
The beef bournignon was super tender but was very watery.

Overall the experience was still good and the customer service definitely added to it. Thanks for having us! X

love our visit to France Soir, it is like being transported back to Paris. The whole ambience, the squashed in tables, the noise, the waiters. The only thing missing is the smell of someone smoking a Gauloises on the pavement outside
The food is always well cooked and the menu offers some unusual dished for the more adventurous

The atmosphere was amazing felt like I walked into France as soon as I got, which was a great touch. Also food was great, snails and tartare very authentic and tasty and duck confit and steak was cooked well and super tasty, the only let down was the duck parfait it reminded me of spam, it was hard and not easily spreadable and just not a good texture at all. Other then that was a great French restaurant.

Feels like being in Paris. Great old school hospitality, simple food done well. Favorite meal here is a starter of snails, followed by the rib eye and a nice glass of gamay. BYO during the week is handy too

If this restaurant was in Paris and you were lucky enough to eat in it, you would return to Melbourne and rave to all your friends how you discovered a real Parisienne gem.
How lucky we are to have France Soir.
My tip..... order the specials of the day. Can’t go wrong.
And you will drink very well here too.

I came here with a friend for a weekday lunch so we had most the restaurant to ourselves. My friend convinced me to try the escargot which I actually fell in love with. Mind over matter, if you don’t think about it, the buttery garlic concoction is delicious. I ordered the barramundi which was cooked perfectly but was lacking in flavor. The real winner here is the creme brûlée and I dare say it’s the best creme brûlée I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. So creamy, smooth and silky and a perfect layer of torched sugar on top!

The restaurant is perhaps a little too cramped, and the bar stools inconveniently located, but this restaurant certainly delivers a good French bistro offering. I usually like to order from the specials menu, and this time was no different after seeing the 750g T-Bone steak. Have to say the steak was good, and at $53 reasonably priced; their bernaise sauce I thought was spot on; whilst the pommes frittes were standard. The sautéed spinach was nice, well cooked and fresh, even if I would have preferred an additional kick. Whilst the Tasmanian oysters to begin were very good, a must to order. Drinks menu wasn’t great value, but the Bourgogne Rouge I ordered was very smooth. Have to say I didn’t like the look of the desserts; cream out of a canister doesn’t appeal to me, and the crepes weren’t made fresh, choc mousse looked dull. My second favourite French bistro in Melbourne; would come here 1-2 times per year.

Great meal on a busy Saturday night with friends. Service was great and efficient. Nice to see some real French fair such as 'ris de veau' on the menu. Beautiful bread. Great steak tartare and beautiful cote de veau normande. Lots of rich creamy dishes as you would expect on a French table! Tarte Tatin to finish was lovely. Disappointed to be charged $5 for a scoop of ice-cream with it though!

They’re specials are always amazing... eye fillet steak just perfect all the time... the butter lettuce salad... escargot... I can name everything on the menu and it will not disappoint.

The boys will make you feel like home... or simply feel like you are dining in Paris. France soir is a perfect French food at its best... so much Love xoxoxo

I think my expectations for France-soir was very high. The food was really great but not as amazing and I believed it would be. Ive had better set lunches from bistros in France and a lot cheaper without the loud obnoxious customers treating staff poorly. On a positive note the creme brûlée was perfect. Close to what I’ve had in France. I think the restaurant is great but don’t know if I’d bother going back.

Have visited on every trip to Melbourne this cozy french establishment. Wine list the size of a phone book perfect if one should wish to try something new or to impress. There's also a map of France enroute to the restrooms if you want to double check where the wine came from.

Must try the Escargots de Bourgogne à l’ail (Snails in garlic butter) and Entrecôte (scotch fillet w/chips salad). TIP: Save some of the complimentary bread for the garlic butter that comes with the snails. We also ordered the pork of the day, which even though it looked perfectly cooked and pink, was unfortunately a little bit on the dry side. The charcuterie sauce didn't go with it enough to add that extra juiciness it needed. Normally would order the duck which has never disappointed.

Would describe the service as always attentive and vibrant. Expect the wait staff to yell things in French from one end of the restaurant to the next. It's great for ambience!

Some reviews have mentioned that tables are quite close together here hence the reference to cozy above. Never bothered me though.

I think I understand why some customers complain that the wait staff at France-Soir are rude and arrogant. It’s because those customers have no sense of humour. And secondly there is something lost in translation; in other words, they don’t get the French. We, on the other hand, had the most hilarious night with all the wait staff. They were full of sass and attitude and we loved it. One looked at my BYO Prosecco and asked if it was a gift for the kitchen? Another waiter mimed a stab to the heart as he poured the insulting Italian wannabe into our glasses. So funny! I think people just don’t get them, but all the staff made our night a truly memorable one and we love them for it.

Suffice to say that France- Soir lived up to and then exceeded all my expectations. For a start it’s a classically beautiful little restaurant. You feel immediately transported to another world. By 7.00pm the place was bustling and it’s only a Tuesday night! By 8pm we had to squeeze our way out of a packed house.

It’s really hard to choose from the menu as everything seems good but for sentimental reasons I ordered Coquille St Jacques. There was a little French bistro in Kings Cross years ago, where we could get food really late at night, and the scallops were my favourite. They were nothing compared to tonight’s dish which was just sublime. My main was the John Dory, paired with a simple butter lettuce salad, asparagus with truffles and pomme frites. My friends had the sea perch dumplings and the goat cheese croutons respectively. As her plate arrived with rocket instead of endive, it became a running gag all night. Frisée? Frisée? They both had the duck l’orange as a main; a very generous helping of confit leg and some breast.

We still managed dessert. We had to! And one thing we all agreed on at the end of the night was: it was perfection! Could not fault it.

My daughter and I came back for lunch in January. Perfect lunch. Fantastic waiter. Window table and swift service so we could get to The Como in time for our film. Love it.

This place is the best! I went here when I was very young and remembered it being full of live! Again I have come on my birthday and it has the same atmosphere! It’s pumping with energy and all the staff are wonderful! I got the snails, lamb cutlets and the creme brûlée and it was delicious! The food here is worth the price and it feels like you arnt in Melbourne when you dine at France soir! It transports you to Paris and you are able to escape crazy Melbourne for a couple of hours! If you don’t like a noisy energetic atmosphere this place isn’t for you unfortunately. Lucky for me that’s my style and I love it! I’ll definitely be back again!

Well this is one of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne. Tough call considering the amazing food we have! I always get the goats cheese croutons and love the french champagne of course. The oysters are always exceptionally fresh and taste like the ocean. If I know I am going to France-soir on the weekend, I will be excited all week. Delicious! I recommend the duck and the fish dishes! You MUST get the creme brulee also. Hands down the best I have eaten, that crack on the top with the caramelised sugar- yum!!! All divine.

This week was about the 10th time that I have been to France Soir and I have enjoyed it every time. It is always so busy at dinner which means that service is generally not fantastic. They never seem to have enough waiters working, but those that are always do their best. You just have to come expecting that service is not going to be that attentive and not be bothered by it - it can take quite a while to get plates cleared and every interaction with a waiter seems to be very rushed as there are always other tables they need to attend to. Having said all of that, the food is always good. This time I had calamari for entree and duck l'Orange for main and both we're very nice. I normally have the beef eye fillet for main, which also never disappoints. The fact that you can BYO wire (except on a Saturday) for $15 corkage a bottle is a real bonus. I'll keep going back for years to come.

Wow wow wow, I’ve only visited this Melbourne institution once but what an experience. If you like authentic French food, service with an accent, white tablecloths, a wine list that has chapters and delicious flavours then you will love this place. It has all the French classics like escargot, steak tartare, terrine, entrecôte, other steaks, and a mirror full of specials. The menu is huge, there’s something for everyone and everything we had was absolutely delicious. My entrecôte steak was cooked perfectly, incredibly juicy and tender, one of the best meals I’ve had. The terrine, the grilled prawns and the rillette to start (with delicious fresh bread) was a highlight as well. If you haven’t tried this restaurant, book your table now.

Francesoir what can I say but d'excellence!

This is my favourite French Restaurant in Melbourne. I normally frequent at a lunch time with friends, clients or business associates. The food NEVER disappoints.

My normally go to meal is a glass of Chablis, is the Sardines grillées or Tartare de thon rouge (red tuna) and for main is always the whole fish. I finish off with a fresh mint tea and try to avoid the most delicious brown bread ever made. I don't know where they get the bread from or how it is made but it is heavenly.

A big shout out to Frankie who is the best waiter around and always try's to please.

This restaurant is a must try for anybody wanting a good meal. I don't eat a lot of meat but friends tell me the French Onion soup and Steak options are a 10/10.

This is a must try !!

They offered 2 sittings -6 & 8pm and very busy however the tables are a bit too close together. An amazingly extensive drinks list from around the world. For entree we had scallops gratin St. Jacques which were very tasty & the leek tart which was lovely as the pastry was delicate & filling cheesy. The rib eye filler was rather too tough but the bearnaise sauce was very light & buttery but needed a bit more tang from tarragon! The duck leg was well seasoned but a bit dry. Side dish of pommes frites (chips) were ok, spinach was nice & the crepes Suzette quite nice. Ice cream consisted of chocolate caramel & vanilla which was quite refreshing. Service very quick & attentive despite being busy but our attention was not directed to the specials of the night which was quite disappointing.

French, frencher, frenchiest. France Soir is a long standing restaurant with excellent food, that has cemented its place, regardless of their location in South Yarra and competition in Melbourne. Focus on fresh produce in very good and very fresh French style and cuisine. Looked after well known French service every visit is a bit of entertainment too. Be mindful it has not been a secret for a while. Bookings are essential during peak times. If you enjoy the calm, show up late afternoon as France Soir service runs throughout from lunch till late. When you walk into the restaurant, it definitely feels like France. Cute, old school, freezers/fridges of their selection of cheese and cold meat at the back wall and amazing traditional French food. Dimmed atmosphere when you walk in, the staff are friendly, however, not as welcoming as we had find our booked table ourselves. Food however was a damn delight! Took me back to France, it was absolutely beautiful. Snails were fresh and looked well, the duck leg confit was falling off the bone and melting in my mouth. Loved every bit of it, my partners sauce for his steak was to die for, one of my favourite pepper sauce (not too overpowering). The creme brûlée (usually my fav) we had had good flavour but lacked the silky smooth texture, as it was a little dense, like cheese-like texture which I didn't enjoy too much. Overall, I would definitely come back to try other traditional French dishes and it was a pleasant experience.

The French. The grandfathers of gastronomy today and the master’s of all things cookery. Smiths of the finest pastries, the most complex wines, the most pungent cheeses…But eyyyy somethings gotta give right?! Yes indeed this is a Francophile post thousands of km’s away from the homeland, but i’m not too phased as I found my go to fix for all things Gallic. South Yarra’s France-Soir! Great steak! The food here is excellent. My friend had a duck dish and had absolutely no complaints about it. Only downside is the tables are about 10cm apart and we couldn't have a private conversation without our neighbours listening to every word. The staff were also a little on the arrogant side. Priced well for the quality of food served. It is a good place for a small gathering. I highly recommend the steaks here.

Very traditional French style restaurant that lives up to the hype. Intimate space with white linen table clothes and exclusively French staff. I loved the extensive menu and never ending wine list. Before entree a very generous bread basket with warm baguette (both white and wholemeal) and butter was brought out- always a plus in my books. For entree I ordered the scallops with carrot and ginger purée. The scallops were perfectly cooked and the purée was delicious. Then for main I went for the duck confit which came with a salad and a side of frites. We also ordered the peas, carrots and bacon as a side. The duck confit was genuinely one the the best I've ever had. I literally rolled out of the restaurant and was very happy about it.

Dined here with a group of friends on New Year's Eve 2016. It is licensed and the French wines recommended by the waiter were great. Dishes of the night - escargots and the ribeye steak. The salmon, bouef bourguignon and duck dishes were very good. As for desserts, the creme brûlée and soft meringue were delicious. However those who ordered the tarte tatin and crepes Suzette were quite disappointed. Overall we had an enjoyable night and would dine here again.

Look at the walls full of pics of the rich and famous and you know you are in good company here at France-Soir!

The whole experience is amazing, from when you walk in the door and the waiters speak to you in enthusiastic French. This does not feel contrived, the service staff seem genuinely happy even when I come at a later hour. The late opening hours are a big plus, you can come here around 10pm or later for a quiet meal even on the weekend (when it is usually busy around normal dinner time with Theatre goers and South Yarra diners).

I always have the steak frites. Hugely recommend them! Any pick of sauce with the steak is a go-er, they are all high quality. This is where I come for a steak fix in my area.

There is a beautoful red wine list and an extensive selection of cognacs which I have enjoyed on many a fun fuelled night. I love to sit towards the front of the restaurant, try sit there if you can (but not when I am going there, I want that seat near the window!!!). Even if you are seated up the very rear of the restaurant, as I have been on one occasion, there is still lots of atmosphere. The mirrored walls and blue-ish lighting lend to a fun experience.

If you want to practice your French you are welcome to do this here too.

Love it and MERCI to the whole establishment, it's a lot of fun here.

Hadn't reviewed anything for a while so thought I'd dust off the old Zomato account and write about last night's dinner at France-Soir...for a random Wednesday night, to find not a vacant chair in the place, especially when it has been serving Melbournians for over 30 years, it has to be doing something right. Indeed, France-Soir does a lot right; from the charismatic yet highly proficient French waiters, to the warm, jovial and boisterous atmosphere and outstanding, hearty and uncomplicated French food, you'll soon see why France-Soir is a South Yarra institution. Stick with the things you know and love about French food and you can't go wrong. The escargots served piping hot in garlic and butter were soft, full of flavour and outright delicious. The entrecôte with pomme frites was likewise, soft like butter, a high quality cut, similar to scotch fillet, served with pomme frites fresh from the fryer, simple, yet perfect when done well. Finished with the creme caramel, not too sweet or gelatinous, just spot on and downright terrific. They charge $15 for corkage, so you can byo. Overall though was around $250 for four people, so pretty decent value too. France-Soir is a class act, they're not worried about pushing new boundaries or reinventing the wheel, but there's something to be said for classic, unpretentious and simple fare done really well and that's what you'll get here. I can't see any reason why they wouldn't be around for another 30 years.

The bread here is amazing. I also had the calamari which was great too. I think overall the richer food like cheese / steak would be amazing here but unfortunately the tuna tartare I had was relatively tasteless. Very busy but efficient. Would come back

Had Sunday lunch here yesterday and as always the food and service was consistently great. It's a solid, reasonably priced bistro and should be on your must try list. My partner and I always order the same thing which is pepper steak and confit duck leg and though unadventurous not to try anything else we love these dishes for simple good French food. I spent a summer in the Durdogne in the early nineties where I first tasted confit de canard and France Soir takes me back there every time I visit. We paired our food with a wonderful Adelaide Hills Pinot , look out for BK's skin and bones it will knock your socks off its so damn good. The wine should have been decanted so that's why the restaurant loses that half mark from being perfect, but the wine was still delightful and a perfect complement to my duck. The staff are professional and friendly and this iconic French bistro is iconic for all the right reasons.

If you look through my other reviews I have been on the hunt for Melbourne's best steak and ladies and gentlemen we have a winner! From the size of the steak to how it was cooked, absolute perfection! It melted in my mouth with every bite.. I could not ask for anymore. The sides were absolutely delicious, we went as a group so we were able to order a few at a time. The service was excellent also, all the waiters were french and the whole ambience really made you feel like you were in Paris. If you're looking for a perfect steak 🥩 then this is the place for you.

Nostalgically French! Great vibe created by the chatter of a full restaurant. Each meal we ordered seem to get better as the courses went on. Muscles and prawns were a stand out! Snails are definitely worth a try… extremely flavoursome and not what you would think a snail would taste like. Champaign was brilliant, followed by a top bottle of red, on the pricy side though. Dessert had a good array of choice, we got them all and shared 👌🏻

Classic French dining experience - a little bit chaotic but with great vibes. Most of the dishes we tried were great, except for the steak that came slightly undercooked. Crème brûlée was fantastic though ❤️ the drinks list is so huge, it weighs like a dictionary. Overall it was a great experience, the sounds absorbing boards work very well.

Absolutely classic French restaurant that has been an established bistro for many years. The interiors and atmosphere were fabulous & relaxed. The service was spectacular….Playful and sassy, very effrontée! And the food was divine. They also have an extensive wine list to match. Highly recommend ….this joint as its a must visit! Will definitely be back. OUI!

The food speaks for itself! If you’ve missed travelling these last 2 ½ years, be confident in knowing that you don’t have to leave the country to feel like you’re in Paris. Sitting in the window on a typical Melbourne Wet Winter Saturday. Getting lost in conversation with friends you haven’t seen. Some restaurants you can not hear the person you are talking to, not here, you could be forgiven in thinking you’re the only one dining. The soft mutterings of French accents in the background are the attentive staff. Perfectly curating the dining experience. The Demi caneton rôti à l'orange and Demi poulet fermier rôti were amazing. What takes the dish to another level is the mashed potato and sautéed mushrooms. Absolutely worth every mouthful of guilty pleasure. When you think you can not possible have any more…… the profiteroles au chocolat balances everything. Great potion sizes. No rushing you through lunch to turn the tables over. I understand why this is so many peoples go to restaurant. Make sure you book well ahead of time.

Had a great lunch experience here. It was busy and full but The staffs were very welcomed and tried their best to get us table ( we didn't make reservation unfortunately). We started with coffee. I got cappucino ( with an extra Chantilly cream on the side to get my French cappuccino experience perfect ). Don't ask for almond or soy latte. It's French restaurant 😃 . Coffees served with warm buguttee and French butter. We really enjoy it while waiting for our Èntree. We got half dozen white wone oyster for Èntree and it was fresh and tasty. The oyster is open once you ordered it.its gone in second. We ordered Veal Cutlet & beef casserole for main dishes . It's a big portion. Beef casserole was fantastic. It's tender and flavour black soupy. Just a perfect winter dish. My veal cutlet was cooked medium rare in perfect way. Both are cooked with mushrooms. This place is very comfy, hommy and yummy. The staff is very friendly. I love the French environment when they speak in French to some customers. We miss Paris , but can't fly there yet. So that's the reason we came here. And we got what we wanted. Not only a fantastic food. But also a very nice environment and all the people there. Definitely will keep coming back and make a booking beforehand. Merci beacoup Fance-Soir team .
