Food is sensational & the service is warm & inviting. The flavours were both rich & subtle, blending perfectly to create a taste sensation. Highly recommend finding this gem & warming yourself on these cold winter nights. Thank you to the team for a fantastic experience & the best Indian food my son & I have had.

Paneer jalfrezi (medium spice) with plain roti.

Used Zomato Gold here seamlessly. Waiting staff are very attentive and quick to alter things, ask if cutlery is suitable, confirm orders and ensure that drinks and food are all good.

The cottage cheese (paneer) was excellently soft, not too crumbly. The plain roti was crisp to perfection, and the curry sauce was deoxidise. Personally I did think that it was a bit too sweet and creamy that it overpowered any flavour/contrast that could have been offered by the capsicum and/or onions.

We booked our table for my husband’s birthday and it turned a pretty good experience for sure. The service is great and they reserved our table with a some bday props which I found bit cute :) we had Veg platter and punjabi butter kofta which was too sweet for our taste but the flavours of the dish were so good 👍🏼 to the chef!! Not to mention the complementary dessert they gave on the house as bday special 🎉 Strongly recommend the place for service and the smiles of the staff. Special mention for the manager who made sure to attend each n every table personally n had a good friendly vibe going on all around the place :) 😄

A crazy last minute decision which became the best Indian food I've ever had.

Ordered:
🍱 Non-Veg Mix Platter (full): 4 chicken, 4 lamb, 2 fish ($32.50)
🥘 Butter Chicken: made with fragrant spices and accented with the nutty flavour of cashew ($18.50)
🥘 Kadahi prawn masala: prawns cooked on a hot pan (tawa) and then tossed into a spicy masala mix and garlic ($25.90)
🥘 Dal Makhani (v): made with black lentils, red kidney beans (rajma), butter and cream ($15.90)
🍞 Butter Naan ($4.90)
🍞 Garlic Naan ($5.90)

Review:
For entree the Non-Veg Mix Platter was an icon. With an assorted delicious variety, we experienced a lot in such a small amount of time. When everyone is able to join in and share food, it creates an awesome dining experience.

The mains were mostly a hit with us as well. Butter chicken was delicious and creamy, while the kadahi prawn masala had veggies too - breaking up the monotony of the meal. I couldn't get in to the Dal Makhani because there wasn't enough variety for me, but my friends definitely enjoyed it.

Special shout out to the naans! We loved the warm and crunchy naans (of both butter and garlic variety) that we ended up ordering more servings. The serving sizes were so big too!

the food was really tasty, i enjoyed the chicken vindaloo with the naan. the flavours were very rich and because we took mild it wasnt too spicy. we also ordered the chicken briyani and i must say they were extremely generous with their chicken. However i do have 2 criticisms, one being that the rice was a little bit too soggy and wet for my liking and the other was that the mango lassi was much too thick. if i were to go back i might skip the mango lassi entirely or have one to share between two people. overall pretty good and very nice ambience! we came at around 6pm so it was very quiet but it was still a very pleasant atmosphere overall!

Not that we were excited to go to an Indian restaurant, many of our Indian friends have vouched for Tejas's biryani after hearing (and reading) our complains of how Melbourne does not have many good Biryani serving restaurants.

A big, dimly lit (thus very bad pics) restaurant in the basement of a very famous lane in Melbourne CBD, seemed quite promising, especially after going through their menu.

Ordered a Chicken Biryani, Chettinad Chicken and Butter Naan as we already had our glasses of wine at River land.

Pleasantly, Chicken Biryani was really good. Wouldn't.say excellent but definitely worth having. Not too.greasy, perfectly cooked Chicken and mildly spiced but high on heat.

Chettinad Chicken was a bit sweet, yet, not overbearingly sweet to ruin the flavors of the curry. Chicken.was so tender and juicy that it added to the dish. Naan was so soft and crunchy that it could be easily voted as one of the best.

Would have ideally liked to rate it at 3.5 out of 5 but after recent disappointments this was definitely one of our nicest meals.

Host and Attendants are very friendly and accommodating. Plenty of dishes to choose from, and Vegans and Vegetarians have plenty of choices. Tejas can definitely make a guest on the glutenfree diet quite happy.

It has been a long time we enjoyed a nice Biryani in an Indian restaurant, and after recent debacles, our hopes aren't too high mostly because most of the Indian restaurants that we have tried haven't impressed us much. Partially because we have grown eating authentic Indian food back in India, and partially because most of the Indian restaurants are mediocre under the garb of fusion or good food.

Thank God Tejas was way better than the most.

P.S. The Zomato Gold Membership Privilege proceeded quite smoothly.

A quaint little place in the heart of the city. Cozy, cool, calm, oldish-cum-modernish and soothing that is the impression u get when u enter this sweet little abode of Indian food. Does not come up much in the search engines but then it is worth it.

We were not that hungry and were here because our child wanted to eat dal and rice and so we ordered for a dal tadka and plain rice. Rice and dal both were awesome. The service was good. The staff were very courteous. Customer focused restaurant and people. Quality top class and hygine even better. They even gave a small Avengers themed plate for our kid to have food in. Such a wonderful gesture.

Everything was in place. The decor was simple yet very good. You feel at relaxed and at home being here. Such a good atmosphere. What else do you need. Melbourne really has a hidden jewel which serves amazing Indian food. Would highly recommend this to everyone visiting Melbourne and craving for Indian food.

Outstanding ambience, outstanding food and the host and staff were simply outstanding!

We were a group of fun loving youngsters, wanting to have a good time and this restaurant with the spread they offered was honestly amazing...

Would suggest the guava mocktail and the Punjabi Kofta (ask for hint of spicy side).

The host knows his stuff ! Able to guide really professionally on the look, feel and smell of any requirement...

This was one place where the food wasn’t boring and the ambience gave us an opportunity to enjoy the evening...

We’ve been trying to find a good Indian place in the CBD and Tejas checks most of the boxes. Warm and polite service, delicious food, with variable pricing.

We had the samosa chaat and onion bhaji entrees. Loved the onion bhaji which was crispy perfection served with a delicious tangy tamarind sauce. The samosa chaat was also delicious, but the portion was very small, we paid $10.90 to get served a single samosa.

Mains were phenomenal, we had the chilli chicken with gravy & chicken chettinadu and both were authentic and fragrant. Definitely not one of those restaurants that makes everything from the same curry base. The flavours were top-notch with a delicate blend of spice that made each curry unique. We had our curry with plain naan and Tejas has some of the best naan bread we’ve eaten - they’re light and fluffy and served incredibly fresh.

We shared a gulab jamun for dessert and my feelings are mixed on this. On the one hand, it tasted amazing, but on the other hand, the portion size was so small it seemed stingy. We paid $11.90 for 2 small balls of gulab jamun, at that price, I would have thought there would be 3.

While the pricing seemed fair across the mains, I felt many of the desserts and drinks were not priced accordingly. For example, they had salted or mango lassi for $10 per glass. I would hesitate to order desserts and many of the entrees again given the poor value, but would definitely return for their mains.

I had this place bookmarked for a few months now and really looking forward to trying the food. I had high expectations before coming here and have to say I wasn't in the slightest disappointed. The service was really good. Our server Anup was a very friendly and attentive bloke. It was just him and another girl serving. Anup constantly made sure our water glasses were topped up. We ordered Chilli Chicken, Tandoori Prawns, Mixed Full Platter, Butter Chicken, Butter Roti and one of the desserts I neglected to remember the name. WOW! The Tandoori Prawns were amazing! Bloody brilliant. I was blown away by the flavours. I will come back again just for the prawns alone. The Chilli Chicken was also really well cooked and presented. Reasonable portion sizes for reasonable prices. Can't complain about that. Sorry Anup, I can't tell you any negatives about our lunch. My girlfriend and I loved the restaurant and will surely be back again.

Highly recommended!

We decided to eat here as we were looking for someone close to a bar we were going to later.  We are so glad we gave it a try!  This was the best Indian we have had since living in Melbourne.  The photos don't do the place justice, but it's a nice, big and very clean place located downstairs.  The food was the real highlight though, super yummy and great serving sizes.  We had the Palek Paneer (we all agreed this was the best dish), butter chicken and the goat curry.  For sides we got rice and the butter naan, which was great.  Overall the prices were great, the staff were lovely and friendly and we will definitely be coming back next time we are in the city.

By chance, a Tejas voucher popped up on my wife's facebook page and we decided to check it out. There are a number of good indian restaurants in Melbourne but also a lot of bad ones. We were on the fence on this one...boy were we pleasantly surprised!

The restaurant ambience was beautiful and the service was excellent. We had a paneer tikka to start of the night and it was cooked to perfection. We then shared a kadai chicken, veg curry, jeera rice and a garlic naan. The portions were generous, quality was stunning and I simply couldn't fault any aspect of any dish. Finally the night was concluded with gulab jamun, my favourite. Once again the texture and sweetness of the dish was just right. My only negative comment here is the pricing for the drinks...a $10 lassi seemed rather dear unless we could have a big jug of the mango delight!

Overall I would highly recommend Tejas for good quality Indian food...watch out for the drinks and have one only if you absolutely must!

When you get the basics right, you rarely fail. So is the case with Tejas! Go here for interesting menu, delicious food, good service and a nice feel!
There is a good variety of Mocktails, with an Indian twist. We had mango twist and it was good.
For me the dish of the day was Veg kofta! I would go there again just for this, as the curry was just finger-licking good ! Kadhai Chicken and naans were also decent.
The price is at a higher end, but if they can maintain this quality going forward, then I feel its worth paying!

The Dear Luncher
+4
It has been two days since The Dear Luncher ate at Tejas and all attendees are still in the throes of a food coma.

The entrees were decent: lamb seekh kabab and onion bhaji. A good way to start of proceeding with a Mountain Goat beer to accompany.

The curries were rich, fragrant and generous. Classic white person ordering when it came to the curries: Rogan Josh and Butter Chicken. Alongside that a veggo dumpling type curry that was superb. The butter chicken curry sauce/gravy was divine. The kind that you keep eating even after the chicken is gone, smothering left over rice with the sauce to ensure none of it goes to waste.

The only let down was the service. Not bad service just a little sluggish. Having to calculate the order with an old fashioned calculator after we walked up there to pay was a little painful. The Dear Luncher's entourage only walked up there because a request for the bill at the table didn't result in the bill arriving for a good while.

That aside though, this is a serviceable Indian eatery that is pleasant within and will leave your insides well and truly satisfied.

Really lovely restaurant. The tandoori mushrooms are absolutely delightful— they’re just super juicy and the sauce was perfection, especially when paired with a bit of the yogurt. They offer complimentary papadum as well, which I found to be a tad salty, but it balanced out with the yogurt (which was refillable).

The palak paneer was flavorsome, though I personally thought it was a bit too garlicky and when it was paired with the naan, it had the flavor of garlic bread. It was delicious regardless. As for the butter chicken, it was a bit too sweet for me, but otherwise the chicken was tender and juicy.

Been here several times.
First two times for dinner, third time for lunch.
The dinner menu is quite a bit better than the lunch menu.
Would rate dinner 4.5, and lunch 3/5.

The curries for dinner (I've tried the chicken tikka masala, chicken korma and lamb rogan josh) are really fresh and have punchy flavours while being well balanced. Their lunch curries aren't great though, they're more a quick cheap lunch meal, so I might give that a pass next time.

The thing I love about Tejas is their garlic naan. It is heavenly. I would be happy even if that was the only thing I could eat for dinner. It's just so good. The naan has the right texture and tastes like it's straight out of the tandoor oven, and the garlic on top is perfect.

Their saffron rice is good too, very fluffy and fragrant.

In terms of portion sizes, they're pretty big and always leaves me satisfied.

The service is also great, they remembered us from the first time we went and service is always friendly and super attentive. We even got a complimentary onion bhaji entree the first time we came (the sauce for this was delicious).

The ambience is lovely, very spacious, and quiet with some pleasant background music.

Great dining experience with delicious food and great service! We went here to celebrate my graduation (we booked online few nights before) and Anub went out of his way to make sure we were finely wined and dined. I personally loved the Lamb Roganjosh, but my friends loved the Butter Chicken and Tandoori Chicken.

We got the Butter Naan, Garlic Naan, Cheese Naan, Safron Rice, Lemon Rice, Amritsari Fish, Tandoori Prawn, Lamb Roganjosh, Butter Chicken, Tandoori Chicken and Raita. All comes highly recommended!! We got free samosas too (which were enough to fill us!).

It’s located on the heritage street on McKillop and it was such a great find! Anub was kind enough to let my dad order a Hot Chai which wasn’t even in the menu and my dad loved it! Would recommend Tejas to maybe put that in the menu. Great for cold nights.

Definitely coming back when we get back to Melbourne.

Ambience - 5/5
Food - 5/5 (we asked for medium-spiced dishes)
Service - 6/5 !!

Truly excellent Indian restaurant. Atmosphere is great, the place is clean and newly renovated. We were served by one of the owners who was seriously so sweet, passionate and attentive. He gave us a complimentary samosa chaat to start with : which was awesome. The dish was spicy, sweet and the perfect appetiser.
We ordered the veggie starter platter, which was filled with crispy fried bites: such as fresh paneer covered in tikka spices, tandoori button mushrooms and pakora : served with a lovely tamarind sauce. Everything was so tasty and fresh.
We also ordered the aloo gobhi: my new fave curry - cauliflower and potato and peas and spices, plus some fluffy rice spiced with cumin seeds to go with it. SO GOOD. So fragrant and flavoursome.
The owner wanted to give us the full experience, and also offered us a complimentary dessert: sweet syrupy doughnuts, and they were the perfect ending to such a delicious meal.

We will definitely be back - our new fave Indian spot in Melbourne. :)

On a recommendation from a friend who I consider to be a bit of a 'foodie' we went to Tejas for dinner last night.  Located in the infamous McKillop Street, on entering the restaurant the ambiance and decor are gorgeous - modern and spacious but the booths lend it a very intimate feel. We were greeted by one of the owners, who was super friendly.  We had no booking which wasn't a problem as it was quite early, however, later in the night it did fill up more. The menu was very extensive with heaps of vegetarian options.  The drinks menu was also really good and quite affordable. The wait staff were excellent and well-informed.  The food was so fresh, authentic and delicious and we couldn't fault the presentation or portion sizes.  We will definitely be returning to Tejas next time we're in town!

This is a relatively new restaurant. The decor is modern but not stark. I ordered the spinach and chicken, with a side of garlic naan. The portion was large enough that I only ate half, but I wanted to eat it all. The chicken was tender and the overall dish was spicy without being overwhelming. I also recommend the garlic naan - the garlic had no bitterness. Overall, some of the tastiest Indian food that I have ever had. The service was great and the prices were reasonable.

I always enjoy Indian food, but being a vegetarian, the options in the Indian restaurant are always similar. But today we ordered a veggie curry(something with nine kinds of veggie), it was something I’ve never tried before- so so yummy! We also had Thali and some other curry, they were all nice! The CBD’s relatively new Indian restaurant, Téjas (meaning, amongst other things, sharpness, brightness and brilliance) is living up to its name with an enticing mix of flavours and spices to transport diners to the streets and homes of India.

Owners Sewinderpal Singh Dhaliwal and Srinivasan Thotta’s passion for food and wine mixed with their hospitality backgrounds which have seen them work in intense kitchen environments, translates to Téjas being a well-oiled machine.

An Indian food haven with a Melbourne twist, the restaurant has a welcoming ambience that is versatile enough to take you from quick dining during the CBD lunch hour rush to a decadent feast in the evening which is best enjoyed with their extensive drinks list.

Hard to fault this place. We came here because it popped up with 30% off on EatClub. Blessed with a modern setting, it is elegantly decorated and feels spacious. Staff are friendly and helpful. We ordered the lamb seekh kebab, the chicken chennai and naan (both buttered and plain) and buttered roti. The lamb seekh kebab was tender and crumbly and the meat was delicious. It was very spicy which we liked. It was my second time having chicken chennai and I thought it was full of flavours. The chicken was not overcooked and the curry was not oily. Really enjoyed the buttered naan and the buttered roti too. They gave us a generous portion of complimentary papadums though if I'm being picky, it would have been nice to get some kind of condiment to go with them. I would say the prices are mid-range and on par with other Indian restaurants but of course, with the discount from EatClub, it's amazing value for money. They had a long list of interesting cocktails which I would be keen to try next time. Menu options were good and they had a few different versions of gulab jamun which I'm definitely getting next time! It took a little while for the food to come out but I actually liked that because I'd like to think that my food was prepared fresh and with care.

Went in tonight hoping for a nice quiet dinner. This place exceeded our expectations. The place itself had a few tables being served but we were made to feel very welcome and the manager and staff were extremely accommodating and making sure we were okay throughout the entire night. The food was amazing and we left feeling very full and satisfied. Can’t wait to come back!

Delicious, authentic and hearty Indian food. I had the Paneer Tikka and Chana Pindi and both were near perfect dishes. The Paneer Tikka was such a nice and uncomplicated dish but packed with so much flavour. It really was a perfect starter. Chana Pindi was really delicious and filling. The cocktails are also worth trying if you can (I loved the Genie In The Glass!)
The restaurant is modern, ambient and spacey. The service is quick and friendly and the owner is super polite and chatty. The menu is really expansive so it caters to all kinds of tastes and preferences. I‘m keen to head back here and keep trying different things off their menu!

My experience here was amazing! 10/10. The food is so delicious. Indian cuisine is my favourite and I have travelled the world trying as many Indian restaurants as I can. This is an absolutely elite restaurant. The Vegetarian Mix platter of starters were so full of flavours and diversity. For the main I had a Punjabi Butter Kofta with rice and naan and it was absolutely to die for. From the outside it seems small and neat but a little underwhelming, but once you walk down the stairs into the restaurant it's a large, beautifully decorated, pristine, clean and modern looking establishment. Such an impressive interior design. The waitress was perfect and professional. The owner was so welcoming and came and made friends with us. The owner went above and beyond and treated us to a complimentary drink and deserts which I'm still salivating about. I will be returning and bringing a lot more friends from now on. FANTASTIC!

Melbourne needed a niche for Indian fine dining. Choices were a handful...very less for the demand. We bumped into the heritage building, thick woodwork, rich silverware, piano and beautiful interiors.
The service is definitely great since it's new. The staff came around spoke to us, took feedback and offered great food and drinks.
The cocktails are very innovative with the taste of India. The raw mango, masala cola, spicy guava.... tastes very good.
The food - the starters are very tasty. The homegrown taste of India holds very nice. I recommend the samosa chat here...my best so far in this country.
We also ordered garlic naan and Kadai Paneer. The food was tangy, fresh, hot and thoroughly enjoyable.
I highly recommend this place for the authentic taste of India.

Tremendous foods and 120% perfect service Foods were amazing especially butter chicken with rotis Chili chicken (dry) were so great. It's spicy as having a runny nose with slight of pain on my tongue but still so great. Large portion with reasonable price. Also very kind service looking after me and my boyfriend all time, made us extra happy while we were enjoying the foods Place smells good .. music playing background is good. Dessert is good too. Everything was harmonious I will also recommend to other friends from overseas or locals

The best Indian restaurant in CBD, with authentic Indian taste and wide range of dishes to choose from. I would highly recommend the mocktails and cocktails as they are very different from any other place you might have tried before. The ambiance is modern and the food is delicious with good portion sizes. The super friendly staff will make you feel comfortable and their hospitality will make sure your dining experience is memorable. They have a wide range of wines to choose from as well. If you want to try an authentic Indian restaurant, this place would surely not disappoint.

A hidden gem! This place is well placed between Bourke and McKillop street. The restaurant was started by two brothers with a view to provide rich, authentic Indian fare! We were the first ever customers to this restaurant and proud to be so. The ambience reminds you of a high end Indian restaurant and the quality and taste of food is top notch. Do visit this place and try the cheese naan and kofta curry!

If you want to have a good Indian food in Melbourne, this would be the number 1 place for that. Me and my friends liked the food a lot. We had garlic naan, Mix Vegetarian Platter (Full), Masaladar Aloo Gobhi, Chana Pindi. All tasted excellent! Kudos to the restaurant!
