Review Papa Gino's Pizza Restaurant - Melbourne

Harry Lu
They are famous for their pizzas! Good service scope, many customers, traditional taste of Italy. Although my Al Funghi fettuccine looked and taste like a pizza, I still liked it very much. Pleasurable place for lunches and dinners. The bread are awesome as well.

Came here for a late dinner, the pasta was a bit disappointed and seemed like something I could easily make at home. The pizza was a bit better, however wasn’t the traditional style that I usually eat in an Italian restaurant. However the price was really good at <$60 for 2 people.

Papa Gino’s serves up an affordable and hearty traditional Italian/Australia pizza. This is definitely one of the more low key eateries on Lygon, but from an unassuming store front, you’ll find friendly service and a lovely meal. If you prefer your dining experience to be just that, away from the social media hype, Papa Gino’s is definitely a good choice for a Italian lunch or dinner.

Food was so good!! We ordered Gnocchi al funghi and Fettuccini carbonara as main. Garlic focaccia as entree. Only feedback I would give is that focaccia was served only when we were halfway through pasta. Still, highly recommended. Will be back

Huge portions of great food for the most decent prices in all of Lygon - all complimented by super friendly staff and a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. 100% recommending it to all of my friends!
Jeff
Great restaurant delicious food and friendly staff the food is delicious and reasonably priced will bring more friends next time

YUMMY AS F*CK !!! very good pizza and very friendly staff - ordered a mexican pizza at an italian restaurant and the only people to make fun of me were my fellow dinner guests

The restaurant has nice decor and friendly staff!! Cosy. Portion sizes were decent. Enough to have some leftover to take away. The prices aren't too bad. Good food! Spaghetti bolognese was great. Riso e fagioli was pretty delicious. Especially the bread that came with it. The staff member that waited on us was already aware of dietary requirements and reassured that it would be taken care of. That really added to the good experience :)

I ordered a large Mexican Pizza good size the look strange slivers of green capsicum and hot salami which tasted like road kill. Flavour none hat to add salt olive oil,and even then the flavours wee absorbed by the pizza. I was very disappointed with getting such a pizza left half behind. If Papa Gino was present that evening you have s restaurant for 40 years doesn’t mean you have the best pizza in Melbourne I hate Pizza Hut but it has more flavour then yours. I’m usually not so aggressive with commenting on any restaurant but that was the biggest let down. Thank god we ended up at Brunetti and fixed the night up. Try your own pizza sometimes. In the other side the wine very nice a bit warm from the syorage behind the pizza oven hot it chilled and enjoyed the drop. Service very efficient and quick.

The best food in Melbourne every time!! , Pepper sauce to die for with amazing friendly staff. Highly recommended.

We went to the restaurant as a walk in. It was packed and they managed to get us a table within 5 minutes. The food and service was fantastic, but, I ordered veggies with my meal and got salad. A very small thing in the scheme of things, but if you order something you should get it. By the time the waiter got anywhere near our table again to mention it to him we had nearly finished, so, salad it was.

My fav restaurant ever!!! Best chicken snitznel ever!!! Fast service food always hot and perfect! Garlic focaccia is to die for!! No matter how busy I will always wait for a table and refuse to eat anywhere else along lygon street

Im sorry but i cannot believe the reviews on the restaurant. I have give 2 stars for the wine and service and thats all. The pizza is absolutely crap. The ingredients and dough had no taste at all. Very disappointing..
Kylie Ann Goodwin
Best and afforbanke place to eat when in Melbourne. Always amazing service and they are great with kids.. Orders taken and meals are out in no time!!! Love the place!!

We love Papa Ginos it's a favourite that we visit often. Love the no.21 pizza... Ortolana is so good! Highly recommend Papa Ginis

Best pizza ( specially the marinara one ). Would highly recommend to try it, thumbs up!

I’d rather eat an ambilical cord, at least then I’d get some nutrition. Awful disgusting pizza, “Papa Gino” should be ashamed of his ramshackle torture den.

-999999 / 10

Another typical bad Lygon street Italian place. I don't get how these places are always full and manage to stay open. Had pizza and Bolognese ravioli, pizza had practically no cheese on it, so all the topping dried out and was undercooked in other parts. Dough was terrible and dry, that cheap shredded ham. Bolognese sauce was bland, as were the ravioli. Bah, nothing good to say here unfortunately.

I went their a couple of times and I enjoy their food so much! They have the best pasta and lasagne! My sister also loves to eat their pizza and loves to go there almost every holiday dinner!!
Eat Good Melbourne
Papa Gino’s is your classic Italian restaurant serving up all the usual suspects when it comes to pizzas, pastas and mains. We ordered the marinara pizza, mushroom pizza, veal scallopine and tortellini carbonara. The pizza had a thin crust and was generous with the toppings. The pasta wasn’t overly oily and tortellini was well cooked. Staff were great and attentive as well.

A great lygon st institution. Had a capricciosa and the Vongole. Very nice! If you are in Lygon St definitely try this place at least once.
It is quite noisy so a good place to have a quick eat.

I ordered their Ubereats and add extra shrimps & zucchini ... and they really gave me A LOT! Tasty & large portion! I’ll dine in there next time.

We have been goin here whenever we are in the neighborhood and feel like pizzas. Their pizzas are good , service is fast and staff are friendly . The best part is the pizza making kitchen is at the front for customer to see. Also they show us how they chef throwing the pizza dough to the air , it was like show , very cool and pretty entertaining to both for adult and the kids

They have been around for ages and they serve amazing pizza and pasta. It does get busy on the weekends, might want to get in early.

Love the authentic flavours of pizza and the salami pizza was really yums
Sancha Noranho
Loved that the servings were generous. Had a meat lovers pizza and it was soo good!

😱Lizzie’s first impression: I used to come here all the time especially during my uni days - i can't believe it's still here.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: The presentation is obviously not as fancy as other italian restaurants, but the food is cheap enough and tastes great. My favorite is the pizzas and the carbonara. In terms of pizzas - it has all the typical flavours you would expect at an Italian restaurant.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: The presentation comes in a silver tin, and the table cloths are typical cloths for a local restaurant in Italy - i love it actually.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: A great place for cheap and affordable italian food that is yummy and has all sorts of flavours and dishes.

My mates and I frequent this restaurant monthly. We’ve been doing so for years. The food here is always really good. Old school pizza. Not wood fire. The owners are fantastic. We normally order oysters, natural and kilpatrick, pizza and pasta. No pics cause the food didn’t last too long with the boys famished. Papa Gino’s you ripper.
Parul Aggarwal
Food here is amazing. I don't eat a lot of Italian outside but this took my breath away

If you’re looking for an authentic Italian pizza, couldn’t recommended Papa Gino’s highly enough! Lovely family run business located in the heart of Carlton. Ordered the Campania pizza - tomato, cheese, onion and PROSCIUTTO and I can happily say it was certainly a hit with the taste buds 😋 kinda like playing centre forward during Manchester United’s era of dominance.... Giggys on one wing, Becks on the other... you just know what you’re gonna get 😏 and the Campania pizza was certainly that, always delivering the goods in the right areas 😍 have been coming here for years and will certainly continue to do so!

Single best Italian restaurant I have EVER visited. At peak times, you might have to wait 20 mins to get seated. But I can assure you, it's worth the wait.

Their pizzas are absolute value-for-money. Large ones are enough to take down two hungry folks. 11/10 would recommend.
Sean Jackson
My family was there last night, it was a great time. Nice ambience. It was super-busy but we got a table quickly. The food was awesome. We ordered chips, Margherita, Carbonara, Puttanesca and a Lasagne. The waiting staff were polite and friendly. This was the 2nd time that we've been to Papa Gino's and it was another fine experience. We'll be back again, for sure! Cheers...

Authentic Italian pizza and pasta!
The place is very cozy, and the interior is very Italian. The serving was also big enough for 2 to 3 people. I love the taste of their lasagna and al funghi. Papa Gino's pizza was also good. I like the inclusion of anchovies as it gave the pizza a different flavour. They also serve free bread slices, though the bread was soggy. They should have toasted the bread instead. Overall, I love this restau, and definitely I will come back!
Casey Croucamp
Awesome food that makes you feel at home. Great atmosphere and service. Drool inducing cheesy garlic focaccia, therapeutic tortellini ah funghi and a taste buds tantalising Mexicana pizza
Ji Song
Had a late night margarita pizza with extra hot salami. It was probably bad for me.. but the pizzz was soo good. The cheese was extremely generous and made for melting mouthfuls. The staff were very friendly too.
Christopher Chan
Nice service but the steak was bland and poorly seasoned, it was sort of tasteless. The pizza was okay and the atmosphere was decent. I'd reconsider going twice.
Abdul Soulisa
This restaurant used to be one of my favourite pizza restaurant in Lygon area. However, this time it was not. We ordered Marinara Pizza (seafood and anchovies) with extra pineapples. Pizza is not delicious as it was. The service was also not friendly as we had before. Perhaps will not come again. To be fair, the price is a little bit cheaper compared to others in this area.

Papa Gino’s is a no-frill Italian restaurant in a sea of Italian restaurants on Lygon Street, and we decided to drop in for a quick lunch on a weekday.
Frank
Best traditional old school style Pizza on Lygon. Pasta's are okay, nice but not amazing. Wait staff are friendly. Always busy and can get noisy, ideal if you're taking the family.
That_Foodie_Friend
After some research, we found Papa Gino's as a place that served simple Italian food. We were blown away. Our pasta was perfectly Al dente, and the veal was tender and perfectly seasoned. We were seated quickly and the staff were enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The only negative was a lack of seasoning on one of the pastas. A great experience that was good to the wallet!
FBriacliff
We went for a group office lunch and the place need more waiter cause we waited 15 minutes to get water. The pastas are served in large proportion but the waiters put done my order wrong, give me cream sauce pasta instead of Napoleon sauce. And the cream sauce was very thick, but it could be just me, cause I just prefer the red sauce,
LiamzlEats
While I commend Papa Gino’s for having relatively attentive staff, nothing about the presentation nor the flavour of the dishes at Papa Gino’s stands out. Reasonably affordable pricing but nothing to rave about.
Hannah
It was a very nice pizza shop! I really enjoyed the foods. The pizzas were so fresh and crispy. Every ingredients; including prawn, veggies, ham; were so fresh and well-cooked. The pizzas come with very big size and good texture. I just wanted to eat more even though I was already full. I ordered an Italian red wine and it was sweet and nice too. I highly recommend this place! I will come back here for sure!

Quattro Gustri ($22 large)
⭐️ 4/5 ⭐️
🍴Quite authentic Italian pizza that comes with a generous topping of ingredients and a thin crust at an affordable price. Great for sharing or for those who like varied options, the #quattrogustri comes with 4 different flavours on one pizza - making it the best of all worlds. There is Vegetarian (mushroom capsicum & olives), Aussie (ham bacon & egg), Mushroom (tomato mozzarella & mushroom) and Margherita (mozzarella, cheese & basil).
📍@papaginos, 221 Lygon street, Carlton, Victoria, Melbourne
#cafehoppingkidsmelbourne #cafehoppinglygon

Excellent establishment! Vibrant and delicious not to mention entertaining! Watching the chefs work the pizza dough, authentic pizza experience. I have had many Carbonaras in my time (if it is on any restaurant menu I will order it) but tonight’s carbonara was the best I have had! The staff we absolutely delightful! Can’t wait to come back to Melbourne to eat here again. ❤️
Lara
Cute little restaurant in Lygon Street which was very busy (a great sign). Ordering and table service was prompt and friendly. I ordered the Scaloppine ai Funghi with vegetables, which had masses of mushrooms and was delicious. Dinner partner ordered a pizza which was also delish. A nice bottle of wine topped it off.
Grant Gibbs
Nice food. 2 large pizzas and 4 beers fed 4 large fellas and some. Good flavours and bases made for a pleasant night out. Beers were icy cold which was awesome on a warm night. Service was prompt and friendly, would definitely go back again.

Food Rating: 😀4/5
Atmosphere Rating: 4/5
Service Rating: 👏4/5

Came here because our usual Carlton spot was closed for the holidays, but Papa Gino's is now one of my favourite Pizza places to go! The service is great and quick, and the atmosphere is quite dark but cozy.
Ordered the super special pizza, along with Marinara spaghetti and cream Ai Funghi with penne. The pasta's were great and creamy, without being too salty and the pizza was giant and so filling. The portion servings are quite generous and is a great family-friendly place along Lygon street.
Crabapples For Lunch
Generous portion of pasta and seafood in the marinara. Prawns were overcooked and the pasta was slightly over al dente but that was likely due to the food being delivered rather than eaten at premises. Pizza was well baked as well.

Pretty good standard of food but nothing in particular that makes it exceptional.
Descartesmuse
A pleasant classic Lygon street Italian restaurant. Food is prepared well and tastes great. The decor is again is a classic Lygon street approach.
Eat_today_diet_tomorrow
Have heard so much about this place so we gave it a go. This restaurant is one of the busiest restaurants on Lygon. It is spacious. You better book the table or avoid the peak time. The staff was nice and friendly. They also provided quick service. We had pizza (half/half) , fresh calamari (fried) both were delicious!
Thelordlam
Been coming to Papa Ginos for many years now and the quality of their food has kept its standard. Although the price has been slowly creeping up each year it's understandable as that seems to be the case for most places.
Michaela Mvb
I was so excited to order the mushroom pasta with cream sauce as i'd read a review raving about the sauce. Sadly my serving was quite dry and lacking in sauce. The entree size though was very generous. Perhaps you get more sauce when dining in rather than having the meal delivered. The tropical pizza was super fresh and delicious. The surprise of bonus bread and butter was lovely. And, the mousse was great with the topping of whipped cream. Will definitely eat in next time.

Amazing food always. My boyfriend and I love this place and the staff are incredible. Always so busy and pumping. Thank you Gino. You’re the best

Super special pizza at Papa Gino's, Lygon St Melbourne - tomato, mozzarella cheese, ham, hot salami, mushrooms, green capsicum, olives, anchovies, prawns & smoked mussels.
Love the spicy salami, the small prawns were flavourless but overall tasted ok.

Can't have a foodie adventure to Melbourne without hitting up Lygon St for some Italian! This time we decided on going to Papa Gino's, the queue was surprisingly okay for a Friday night with only a solid 20 minute wait. I loaded up on 12 extra strength lactease and loosened my belt for the food I was about to consume!

I got the entree amatriciana with gnocchi as my main, my compromise between not order straight up cream sauces and giving me an insufferable amount of gas, bloating etc due to my lactose intolerance for the rest of the night. Super fluffy and light gnocchi made this a great dish, not to mention the great balance of the creamy tomato sauce with tons and tons of bacon!

The doctors got the creamy mushroom sauce with tortellini, I had a piece of tortellini and had to forcibly stop myself from having more. I would drink that sauce, if only it wouldn't have spelled my doom for the next 24 hours.

We got the margarita to share, which to me was a bit of a disappointment since it was a tomato sauce base, dried basil and tons of mozzarella number. The base was thicker than I expected since I like that super puffy, thin Napoli style as my ultimate style but I do like a thicker base!

I can't remember our reasoning but we wanted a meaty/spicy pizza so we got this Mexican pizza, hot salami, chilli, capsicum, olives, tomato, ham and mozzarella! It was pretty good, very classic Aussie style pizza I think. Not at all spicy but not a bad thing I think!

Not a bad place! Not to my taste, as I prefer a Napoli style of pizza but not bad either. Very generous portions!

Been going here for a long time. Their chicken Parma is to die for. Pizza and pasta are great too. Crowded during weekends and staff are super friendly. Not that expensive either.

The staff is really friendly. And the food is nice as well. Me and my friends ordered a vegetarian pizza and a chicken Spinach potato dumplings. They were both good. Good place to have a chat with your friends on weekends.

One of the best pasta places in Melbourne for a decent price too compared to more expensive Italian restaurants that I have tried. The pasta is cooked to perfection, food comes out fast and it's delicious! The mushroom and cream pasta is the best that I've tried in Melbourne, it has just enough flavour and cream (not overly creamy/rich making it difficult to finish which is usually the case with cream based pastas elsewhere). Only issue is the consistency is different sometimes. Sometimes it is very cheesy other times it isn't, and sometimes I get button mushrooms and sometimes I get portebello ones. Also, I find that their oil based pasta such as the aglio olio is far far too oily and needs more flavour.

Food was very delicious, staff were friendly, the restaurant was nice and cosy and had a lot of people, so there's not much I can complain about. The penne saltati was absolutely fantastic, as was the pizza Margherita.
Vanessa
It’s busy and loud. But you can find all your favourite traditional Italian food right here, served in big portions (p.s. the large-sized pizza is huge!) Decent service and food price is affordable 🍽
Qianyi Lillian Li
I've heard this place for ages and finally checked!
My friend and I came for lunch on weekday. No queue at 12:30.
We started with some coffee and bread. And then ordered the mushroom pizza(medium 6 slices) and also the Vongole spaghetti. The toppings on both dishes were pretty decent with high quality.
The pizza dough here is thin and crispy, I personally quite like it but my friend not.
Highly recommend for the Vongole pasta, so satisfied with the size.
Overall would be somehow 3.7.
JOELLE
Pizza and pasta on Lygon. (3.5⭐)

Ambience: Pretty spacious, seatings inside and outside. It was pretty late so there were just few tables. It was nice and warm inside and smells like a pizzeria, not strong though.

Service: The staffs were nice and friendly, food came out pretty fast too.

Food: Vegetarian pizza was pretty good, it was bit on the breadier side but quite thin and crispy. The toppings were good amount (mushrooms, capsicum and olives) and it wasnt too oily, though can be more generous on the tomato sauce and cheese.

Carbonara was pretty good too, and was big portion. It was good amount of ham and sauce, pasta was cooked nicely. It tasted just right.

Had a moscato wine on glass which was good price but it's not a freshly opened bottle so it tasted bit sourish, but didn't expect much for a pizzeria really.

Price: decent prices for the portion and taste

YUM: fettuccine carbonara
NAH: none

photos: fettuccine carbonara, vegetarian pizza

( follow for more!✨)

xx,joelle.
Obsessedwithfood
Really disappointed. Ordered carbonara and a spicy pasta (forgot the name already because it was hard for me to pronounce) both pastas were very dry, hardly any sauce and lacked flavour. Carbonara tasted like egg (needed more cream) they use cheap cuts of bacon for their pasta. Pizza had hardly any cheese and was very hard to eat because everything would just fall apart for this reason. The base was very inconsistent, some
Parts of the pizza base was thick and some
Very thin. I wouldn’t eat here again.

A cozy italian place with nice service. Seems like this place is always buzzing + the place is smelling delicious! 😋 the price is reasonable. ordered the Entrée Gnocchi Pollo e Spinachi and it was delicious in my opinion. The serving is quite big for me = a full belly 🤤
Evelynwongyh
The best traditional Italian pizzas and pastas you can find along Lygon Street in Melbourne. :) Feeds many, reasonably priced and worth the fill. For more interesting combinations, check out the variety of other restaurants along the same street. :D
Maeloke97
I ordered minestrone soup and it was pretty good. I was rather full so I wasn’t able to enjoy fully. But overall the food was good and the atmosphere was great.
Utiii
For me its the best gnocchi marinara in melbourne spaghetti marinara and vongole was also on point the mushroom pizza is delicious and the dessert was just simple yet divine ✨

Heard great things about this place and had quite a walk to be a bit underwhelmed. Pizza and pasta was the traditional flavours so can't really complain.

Papa Ginos this is one of the best Restaurants for the simple reason it's not expensive and if you like old fashioned PIZZAS this is the place to go, absolutely the freshest ingredients you could find anywhere and most of all PIZZAS and PASTA COOKED TO PERFECTION even a beer only costs $5 50 this place turns over 100 people a night if not more and very friendly and helpful staff i go every week and it's the same every time fantastic love it GARRY R RATE 5/5

The best such a great pizza base crispy and delicious we only had small mama mia Bella we came from Queensland for the word of mouth that we had to go to Papa Gino's

Got a meatlovers, vegetarian and margherita pizza. All were awesome, though I think the meatlovers was particularly good. Loved the cosy atmosphere as well.

The food is delicious and the service is amazing. The waitors are very friendly and polite. I came here on a cold night and immediately loved the warm, earthy color of the place.
Nikki
Great family friendly place on Lygon Street. Had the Chicken Al Funghi with chips and salad and ate every bite of a large portion it was scrumptious! Everyone had positive things to say about their pizzas and pastas snd we have been about ten times or more and never disappointed. Affordable prices too. Great job Papa Gino !
David Baldini
They have definitely friendly staff and manner is a typical italian joinery along Lygon street, the food is not bad, is definitely not awesome. It`s a quick pasta bar.
Andrew T
One of many Italian restaurants along Lygon Street, Papa Ginos has been a long term business in that precinct. I met with a group of friends there, and we had an enjoyable meal together. The interior is cavernous, with a number of dining spaces separated by brick archways. The walls are of either panelled timber or dark brick, with a few strategically placed items of wall art. The décor is minimalist and tasteful. The menu comprised the standard Italian fare you would expect, including pasta, and pizza. I selected a vegetarian pizza, which was very tasty, and my friends indicated that they various pasta dishes were also enjoyable. The service was friendly, attentive and relaxed. A good place to dine.
Melbourne Foodies
One of our favourite pizza places in Melbourne. The pizzas are authentic Italian and absolutely delicious every time that’s why we keep going back
Darren Wilton
Service was great. The food was good and reasonable value for money. This was our first time here after walking past it for many years. Weekend there is always a decent wait for a table. So we were in town on a Monday night for a change. A good place a worthy of a visit but I would have been unhappy if I'd have waited for a table
FoodBaby
I can't even begin to describe the experience had today. I will definitely not be returning and recommend the council investigate this restaurant.
We ordered five meals, three of which had a long black hair. Not one, not two, but THREE meals.
We ordered x3 chicken schnitzel with mushroom sauce and x2 chicken with Napoli. My meal came out and I had had one bite before finding a longggg black hair. I called the waiter over who took my meal, then comes back after two minutes and says it's the mushroom fur skin. They were canned mushrooms. I explained this to the waitress. She just walked off unsure what to do. I sit there unhappy with my meal, then notice my friend with a hair also in her meal. They eventually accepted the meals were not "mushroom skin fur" . The waiter tried to tell us they had fallen from the sky to which I replied "is someone picking out their hairs and throwing them at us?! What a ridiculous explanation!" They tried to explain it's the mushrooms. Then, the third dish with NAPOLI and NO MUSHROOM had a long hair as well. I was so put off and couldn't eat anymore. We had to pay the bill in full which again is disgusting on the restaurants part. Never coming back.

Great Delicious spaghetti. I had the Spaghetti marinara & it was delicious enjoyed every bit of it they don't mess around here too bring it out to you soon after you've ordered.
Sharon Moo
Came here with my friends for dinner after seeing the 3.8 review on Zomato. Disappointed about it as the waiters saw us raising up our hands for help few times they just ignore us and goes away to serve other tables. Really bad service.
Dustin
Came here for dinner with friends last weekend. They served us a complementary cheese bread before the meal which was normal tasting. I ordered their carbonara which looked delicious from afar. However, upon tasting it. It seriously lacked cream and their fettuccine was hard and dry. They even tried adding some kind of leaf at the side of their dish for presentation which wasn’t necessary as I doubt it was edible. Pasta was totally not worth it. Place was packed but I wouldn’t recommend anyone coming here.
Vick Eats
Definitely a great spot for dinner or lunch. Came here on a Tuesday night before it got busy. Staff were competent and friendly, if anything they need a few more staff because it became so busy. Great dinner, quick and tasty. Some items are overly priced but none the less delicious. Unfortunately my spoon for dessert was dirty, only bad critique for the night which was quickly replaced. Would definitely recommend coming here, for those with coeliac disease it may be hard as they don't list any gluten free items other then their pizza that can have a gluten free base.
Zidane
The style of the pizza appears like a gourmet one but geared a little more towards the american style with more generous portions of toppings. The ingredients come in nice chunks and they seem to be good quality. Six decent sized slices for a medium and eight on a large.

They are quite friendly with the service and also this place seemed to be a fraction less pricey then similiar places nearby.

The male toilet cubicle in this restaurant is so small and the door opens towards the toilet so you really got to squash yourself against the wall, trying not to brush the edge of the toilet, to get out and in.
Good Food
We where a group of 12 went on a weekday for dinner, Mediocre but big serving for a pasta. Waitress was mean while taking order, ambience is ok. Food was served quickly..
Joshua Waddell
I love papa t's. I have been coming here and had every pizza on the menu the pasta is great too especially the home made ravioli. You get what you pay for and its not exactly cheap but also not going to break the bank. I love this joint.
Fat_Steve
Ordered 2 medium pizzas for $32 total which was a bit much.
Service was brilliant in the friendliness of staff, and layout plus vibes of the store being spot on.
Tropical pizza was very well done, pineapple was succulent and overall happy.
Chicken pizza with barbecue sauce tasted somewhat cheap and didn't work as well with the rest of the pizza, so there's room for improvement there.
Overall a very pleasant experience here will definitely be coming back to try more on the menu.
Foodlover
Always a great place for pizza! The base is thin and the toppings are the perfect ratio! Would recommend coming early because peak times are around 7pm onwards. The scallopini is nice. Seats are slightly crowded and loud ambience at times
Rebekah Jade Culhane
Very tasty pizzas and reasonably sized and priced. However, being cooked in an electric oven it just does not have the same taste as a woodfired pizza. It sits in between a local pizza store pizza and a woodfired pizza.
As they don't take bookings we had an earlier dinner at 6pm on a Sunday with 8 people and a baby. We had absolutely no issues getting a table at 6pm but if we had arrived 30 minutes later we would have had to wait.
Although I have a preference for woodfired pizza this was still a very delicious pizza and reasonably priced for the area.
Good Food = Happy Mood
Authentic Italian food at its best , pizza is simply excellent and made to perfection and the pasta are just like homemade full of flavour and can't find anything close to this I absolutely love the place and will be back for sure
Tash
Theres nothing I love more than watching the art of crafting pizza dough and man, you can watch your entire pizza being created here before your very eyes. This place straight up just felt like home, that warm fuzzy feeling hits you when you walk through those doors and the lovely staff welcome you.

The pizza, amazing. So fresh, fast, simple and just delicious. Simple food done exceptionally well at its finest.
Chantelle Hiley
Yes the heat lamps were running and the service was efficient. The entree size is big enough to eat as a main which means this is really good value for money. Wine is under $5 a glass -
Cheers!
Andrew Bartram
Great pizza and friendly accommodating staff.

Generous servings and friendly vibe and atmosphere. Always a pleasure.

Great food good value no frills

Lovely service! My go to place in Carlton! It has everything you could ask for plus the service is good! It's easy for a casual meal, weather it be with the family or friends!
An iconic pizzeria on lygon street. We were here on a Wednesday at lunch time. It was busy with people lining up. While we waited we scanned the menu, picked what we wanted and ordered straight away. We ordered the tropical, american style and a bowl of fries. We loved our pizza and will definitely come back here, its a firm favorite of ours on Lygon Street.

Great pizza. Fresh ingredients used have been here quite a few times for lunch and dinner. Can get quite packed out and it isn't the biggest place but highly recommended

Ordered:
🌇Papa's Pasta Platter (min 2 people): $38.00
Fettucine Vongole
Penne Amatriciana
Tortellini Ai Funghi

Food:
🌆For three entrée sized portions, it was quite filling since we had a complimentary bread basket prior. My favourite was the tortellini ai funghi, partially because I love mushroom and after all the promo on Instagram, I was pretty hyped for it.
I'm considering going back and getting my own solo dish ahaha. This isn't something I'm willing to share!

Update: I came back for my own meal and it was as good as I wanted it to be.

Service:
We arrived to Papa Gino's at 7 on a saturday night to find it super packed - where we waited in line for 20 minutes. Then we came in and waited another 20 minutes, which was softened by the cushioning of the bread basket. Overall, we received pretty good service (attentive to water, to our need to ordering) for how slammed it was.

Considering how close it is to uni and how cheap it is, I'm not surprised that they refuse to take bookings but prefer to take a "first come first serve" approach. Get in early to avoid the queue!!

I have been eating pizza here since I was a child (so many years now) they still have the best quality ingredients and always great service!!
It's simple and perfect just like Nonna makes, purely wonderful Italian food, can wait for a table but this is because it's so good!!
Thank you again Papa Ginos

Fantastic Pizza! Only been there once, but definitely coming again! It took a while for the food to come, but it was a busy night. Totally recommend coming here.

Had dinner here with family and it was a bit of a let down..apart from the waiter who took our orders (attentive and friendly) the staff were not welcoming at all, quite abrupt and not professional. It was an uneasy and empty atmosphere. The food was also disappointing..it was ok but not great..the pasta was overcooked and lacking flavour and others meals were the same. Such a shame..wont be back in a hurry :(

Oh my goodness. Come here for delicious thin crust pizza! We ordered the small chicken pizza and the main vongole spaghetti and both were soooo delicious! Very generous toppings both on the pizza and in the console dish. Try it for yourself and see! By the end of the meal, we were waddling out of there. Will definitely be back to try the other items.

Papa Gino's provides that perfect Italian comfort food. Great, hearty meals at affordable prices.
You can't go wrong with their pasta or pizza 🍕 🍝

I remember coming here as a young kid, peering through the window at the chef rolling the dough and being invited to come inside and help with the pizza-making process! Brings back wonderful nostalgic memories.

Visited on a busy Friday night, fettucine Amatriciana.
Waited about 5-10 minutes to be seated and we expected a decent pasta from an "authentic" Italian restaurant in Lygon Street.
Was severely dissapointed by the quality of products, bacon was just multiple pieces stuck together forming chunks, pasta sauce tasted no better than supermarket quality.

Not worth the $17 dollars a plate. Service was decent though.

Awful.

We ordered the meat pizza, it was literally a thin piece of bread with a thin layer of cheese that was burnt all around the outside and then topped with what must have been Coles freezer bought toppings.

When we mentioned this the staff said we were wrong and we're very aggressive. We were offered no compensation of any kind.

Would never go back or recommend. Not even if you just want a cheap pizza (because it isn't even cheap)

Love going to Papa Gino's for the gnocchi with cream sauce, chilli and tuna or the delicious calzone. The crepe suzette is also fantastic. The fact they are often busy speaks for itself! Enjoy the lovely food at a lovely price!
