Review Trunk - Melbourne

They have an awesome location with outdoor seating which attracts many for food & drinks. Yet I failed to understand why they did not have sufficient number of waiting staff. It took a while and a bit of waving to grab attention of a staff. There are plenty of options for lunch, dinner and drinks. I went with my 6 other colleagues and after the lunch we all agreed that the food was just okay and deserved a three star rating out of five. The Chicken burger that I ordered had small pieces of chicken which kept on falling out of the burger. That's a little strange for a burger. Taste was okay and wasn't extraordinary. Fries seemed cold as if they were waiting to be served for a while. In all, wasn't the experience I was expecting.

It was actually a night out at pepe's.. Anyway! It was great, fantastic vibes and the food was solid. See pictures.. The 4 stars and not 5 is due to the broccolini which was to be honest... Incredibly underwhelming. Massive props to the lady who served our table. I regret not tipping her! She was fantastic (thanks for recommending the ice cream for one...)

Drink prices and range is fine. Outdoor dining is hit and miss in terms of where the heaters are on a cold day. Drinks take a while to come out. The biggest issue is that the smoking area isn't properly separated from the actual dining area, so the smoke permeates the entire garden with the faintest breeze.

Great vibe for lunch, the place looks like a greenhouse. The chicken burger was good but nothing special and relatively small. Other portions of my friends were not that big either. It cost $13 which is reasonable. Great coffee! Would recommend for a casual lunch!

Great little diner in a restored 1850s synagogue and a huge beer garden. The American diner style menu is great with a large selection of burgers, nachos, sandwiches as well as sandwiches. Beer selection is perfectly matched to the menu also. Whilst not the best in town at anything it does, Trunk is satisfying and myself and my mates will be back for sure!

I enjoy going to Trunk whenever I'm in Melbourne. The place has a nice feel and the staff are friendly. Last time I ordered the breakfast burger and felt regret as amazing looking pancakes were served to the table next to me. So, I didn't make the same mistake this time! These were so beautiful, fluffy pancakes and the whipped Mascarpone was amazing.

Good place for late lunch/early dinner but as per other reviews nothing special. I had the Mac and cheese burger which was nice but a little greasy. My friend had the ribs which were again nothing special.

I was visiting Melbourne on a holiday and absolutely loved eating at Trunk Diner. The food is delicious, the staff are lovely and the diner is absolutely beautiful! Highly recommended.

Find your own seating at Trunk and rock up to the bar to order!<br/><br/>Ordered:<br/>🌼 Chicken Quesadilla: shredded chicken, cheddar, roasted red peppers, charred corn, tomato, coriander, spring onion, jalapeno salsa & guacamole ($13.50)<br/><br/>Review:<br/>The quesadilla was flat and toasted - with the fillings taking up the small space in between. It was nice (you can't go wrong with chicken and cheese) but nothing amazing.<br/><br/>Chips were average and large enough to be a side piece for 4 people. They were quite floppy, so unless someone in your group NEEDED IT, I'd advise to go without.<br/><br/>Since the Trunk is a bar friendly area, the tables you jump on may be a little sticky. With little to no roaming table service, you can't be precious here.

Been coming here in the mornings for breakfast regularly. Never disappointed. I had the most delicious eggs benny this morning. Perfectly cooked eggs, generous serving, tasty & beautifully plated. Absolutely love coming here for brekkie - consistently good. Despite it being quite busy, looking over at one of the chefs cooking everything up made me smile coz it looked like he was literally dancing in the kitchen & loving it!👹‍🍳đŸ•ș

We had an event at Trunk and it was a huge success thanks to the amazing staff and delicious food. Everyone was super impressed with the attention to detail and especially that they catered for allergies / food intolerances. Will definitely be back!

Nice outdoor area in the middle of the cbd that’s perfect for mild nights. Tends to get a lot of suits straight after work.

An awesome place for an American style menu, Trunk Diner is a fun place to visit, especially with a group. With a warm and inviting indoor area with loads of natural light and also a spacious courtyard for when the weather is pleasant; this diner has a cosy and cool vibe.<br/><br/>The menu centres around American diner style food; delivering up burgers, hot dogs and loaded fries. We had some amazing hot dogs with a delicious array of fun toppings. The buns were really fresh, and they were both really tasty. The loaded fries were rich and decadent and definitely not something you should eat every day!!<br/><br/>Finishing up with some homemade caramel slice, it was nice to finish on a sweet note. The coffee was really good and definitely hit the spot. Service was cheerful and efficient, even though it was a busy lunch period. An attractive venue at the northern end of town, Trunk Diner is a fab spot for a catch up with friends over some drinks and tasty treats.
Doc
Awesome place for lunch had the Rod Swainson which was a really nice hotdog very quick and friendly service they serve beer and cocktails #drunklife. Also if you like hot give the stupid wings a go !!!!
Linda
Consistent, flavoursome and good price point. I ordered a pepperoni pizza here last night and there was plenty of toppings, nice crisp base and rich tomato sauce. Always good here and food is cooked quick
AH
I had a really enjoyable breakfast here, the baked eggs were really yummy. The coffee was also good, and I liked the courtyard atmosphere. The only critique would be that my mum’s smoked salmon breakfast with the hash brown was cold and she found the hash brown to be a bit oily.

Breakfast here on a Sunday morning, seated quickly, water and menus brought over and coffee order taken. Coffee was very good and came out in quick time. Order taken and food arrived shortly after. Very well presented, well cooked and very nice. Ambience is night, a little loud inside, but overall very good. This is one to remember as we will return here in the future, definitely give it a try.
Karina J
Cool and buzzing atmosphere. There was a wedding in one section of the venue. The coffee was well balanced and smooth. The only downside was that the barista who took my order was quite cold.
Peter Vu
Great burger joint, has excellent burgers, great fries and shakes, great vibe and friendly staff. Have been here many times and will continue to come back.
Sarah
I’ve been here many times, so i though I should write a review. I really enjoy coming here, especially in summer. It has a great vibe, the food is really good as are the drinks! I really like their burgers and fries.
Matt O'Brien
Second time going to this great cafe. Our coffee and food were both delicious. Our service and food delivery were both prompt. I will be going back a third time.
Alexi Lynch
Nice enough joint. Classic Melbourne dude food does the job v nice. White rabbit beer on tap and great broad selection of beer and spirits. Vibe only ok the staff let the team down unfortunately. Worth it but move on and try other places too

They say first impressions matter. Well, damn right they do. <br/>Took us 50 minutes to grab our drinks, with 3 periodical reminders. Food was lacklustre and one burger patty was clearly burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. <br/>Staff were attending to tables that came after us, and one table left after twenty minutes cause no one was attending to them. <br/>Wow trunk. It takes more than a pretty venue to retain customers - you know that don’t you?
Sunny Days Melbourne
What a pleasant American diner. We were welcomed warmly onto the premises and the service remained attentive throughout our time there. <br/>Everything on the menu was reasonably priced. We were keen to try a variety of items today. <br/>The grilled corn with quesa was corn-tastic. That fine cheese scattered over the perfectly grilled corn was a surprisingly great combination. <br/>Fried chicken is my second addiction (after bubble tea) and Trunk's version hit all the right notes....well seasoned and well fried. <br/>The nachos and buffalo wings were as expected - yummy all round. <br/>The setting was great for families. <br/>The diner gets its name from its position under the coral tree....so it looks like I'll be setting my roots down at Trunk diner from now on!<br/>
Our Foodie Finds
Such a beautiful location with both exterior and interior decor & design to match. Light filled and chilled is the best way we can describe the ambience at Trunk Diner; with ofcourse a big dash of American diner vibes. Some great coffees here with the milk perfectly steamed to temperature had us going for seconds. We'll be sure to stop by and grab another however that's where it stops.<br/><br/>A little lack luster for American / Latin influenced food as it was missing the excitement that food of this style has. Perhaps it was the setting it was served in that called for delicious contemporary bar food? The fries $7.0 (large) were delicious, fresh, crunchy with a soft centre which, for our meal, was the best thing we ate. The Ron Swanson $12.5 was OK but lacked "ooomph", the Cuban $13.0 was just ridiculously spicy for some reason. Last time I checked, chipotle is not spicy and so much so, that we pulled out the pulled pork and ate a few bites then left the rest.<br/><br/>Had it not been for the daily shake $8.0 which on the day happened to be a Reeses Pieces smoothie, it would've been a disaster. The place isn't too bad however I wouldn't mind trying other options on the menu during the next visit.<br/><br/>Staff: friendly warm and attentive to our needs, never too far away should anyone require anything. It's always a concern whenever staff are just chatting away to themselves, leaving patrons left wanting assistance however this was not the case at Trunk Diner. Prompt and service focused.<br/><br/>Parking: There's ample parking down the side side streets on Lt. Lonsdale or on Exhibition at 1P. Secure parking options are also available a small walk away if required.<br/><br/>I think what will bump this place up for us is a good tasting of what else they have on the menu and hopefully it isn't lacking "oomph" and/or over spiced when it wasn't supposed to be. Till next time, this is Our Foodie Find.

To be honest, I didn’t have high expectations since I thought Trunk was more of a restaurant than a brunch cafe. The pancakes turned out to be really soft and there was a good balance of flavour. I didn’t really enjoy my latte though. The service was quick considering the place was quite busy.
Wedders
American style diner. Had breakfast here. Group had burrito, pancakes, eggs benedict. All were delicious. Lunch was not so good on my return visit.

Good food, not too expensive. Conveniently open early Sunday mornings and is a nice place to sit around and chill at with someone. However gets pretty busy so you might have to wait, especially if your group is big. The serving sizes are pretty adequate to fill you up and I would recommend their eggs bennedict, whose hollandaise has a nice mustard touch.
Nikki
After being disappointed by another nearby burger joint my boyfriend and I were stoked to discover this little place not far down the road. However we weren’t so stoked when we discovered the ridiculous 10% surcharge on Sundays. We’re from Perth so we are used to paying sky high prices but a surcharge for a Sunday?! Never seen that before. No wonder the joint was empty. Didn’t eat here based on principle.
@twogoodtoresist
Can't decide between a hotdog and a burger? You need to try @trunktown's new Burger Dog 🍔🌭<br/>Super light and perfect for a quick snack, those pickles for sure make this a winner!
Melbourne To Mouth
Trunk is a great spot in the CBD with one of the best beer gardens in Melbourne. Best combo for a weekend afternoon? A pint of Furphy on tap and their crazy hot wings that will have you gasping for air even if you have the highest of high tolerances for hot food - they’re amazing! Their burgers and dogs are great too, a fave being the Ron Swanson (big Parks & Rec fan and these guys pay excellent tribute to the great man’s name).<br/>Highly recommend Trunk Diner if you’re in for a relaxing afternoon with a great outdoor atmosphere!
Cocktails&Chocolate
Trunk Diner is one of my favourite ‘go-to’ drinking/eatery holes in Melbourne for a drink after work or a tasty lunch. Having been there more times than I can count, there can be discrepancies in the food - e.g. the chicken quesadilla might be missing some ingredients from the last time you had it - but overall food is generally quite delicious (the Cuban sandwich is my favourite) and surprisingly filling despite some of the serves looking quite small. Great range of wine and beers and the coffees are great also. If you go during busy times (lunch seems to be the busiest for food) the staff can be run off their feet but are always quite polite.

Having cuban and tuna o’melt + 3 mini corn dogs on Sunday lunch with my cousin. <br/><br/>(+) The tuna o’melt is amazing! The combination of tuna cheese and mayo😍, and the cuban; pulled pork is tender, so lovely however its a bit spicy :) the corn dog is nice as well~ my cousin and i spent around $36ish all together including 10% surcharge on Sunday. We found out the portion quite big, and really filling, so i ate 1 of the tuna o’melt where my cousin ate 1 of the cuban + 1 corn dog each and have it take away😂 <br/><br/>(-) 1.5/5 the service just mehhhh~ one of the staff throw the freakin’ serviette , like drop it on the table instead of place it well, a bit pissed! They also need more staff because it took awhile to get their attention -.- omg. <br/>

Crumbed pepperjack cheese to die for! Love their nachos and mac&cheese croquettes not to mention the burgers and corn cob! Reccomendation for jug cocktails is the ginger ale and vodka!

I'm currently in Melbourne, and decided to give Trunk Diner a visit. Had the Trunk burger, which was very nice, and filling. My sister had the chicken burger, again, delightful.<br/><br/>I did try the "stupid hot chicken wings" in which I was warned by the waitress. She wasn't kidding, I would have eaten fire to cool my mouth down, dear Lord, I was burning.<br/><br/>Ambiance: Very relaxed, quite pleasant.<br/><br/>Food: Very tasty, and plentiful.<br/><br/>Price: Worth every cent, very easy on the pocket, value for money for a quality serving.<br/><br/>Do yourself a favour, if you happen to be in Melbourne give this place a go, you will not regret it.

Unfortunately I felt compelled to download the Zomato app to write a honest review. There is no sauce served on the burgers at this venue, who would make such a decision, it was lacking flavour and creativity... give trunk a miss if you like imagination and flair.

We came into Trunk Diner for a pre theatre drink and snacks. I love the more relaxed Diner feel and we chose to eat inside as it was a little cool outside for a change. Planning to go out after the show we opted to share a vegetarian nachos and I grabbed a pint of Mt Kosciuszko Pale Ale and KD a Rose by the glass. Service was prompt and the nacho were quite generously topped and a very old school dish done well, a perfect quantity to share. I do love me that cheese, guacamole, sour cream & salsa combo.<br/><br/>Only gripe is 10% Surcharge for a Sunday’s and public holidays. This was well sign posted but it still Sh!tz me!!!<br/><br/>I’ve been here before and the burgers are also very good. Recommended

Got a burger, a Golden Gaytime spiked milkshake, and a coffee. The coffee was a little bitter and needed some sugar but everything else was great.<br/><br/>Towards the top end of my budget but 100% worth it. I was seated in their glass greenhouse-style area when it wasn't too busy. The staff were very attentive. I loved how they had beehives on the rooftop, and lots of small 'zones' where customers could choose to sit inside, outside, or in a blend like myself. It's the sort of place you can bring friends or family for a catch-up at any time of day and soak in the wonderful setting.

I initially had booked the restaurant, but 2 days before we were due they called & apologised saying we could only use the diner as they had a wedding on that day! You only find out 2 days in advance? So we sat out in the cafe part & the food was quite good, but the service was rather poor. The wait staff just stood around chatting a fair bit & didn’t really make any effort. Quite expensive too.
Mistermister
The Diner seared section is a bit run down but the service and food was great! Very reasonably priced meals and you don’t have to book. OlJalepeno burger and buffalo wings were delicious! It may looked packed out front and next door but the diner section has plenty of tables rest for walk ins - even on a Friday night after work.

Trunk is probably one of my go to places on a warm/nice day when I am meeting someone for lunch or coffee around work. I enjoy eating at the diner with the variety of food options that are fun and delicious. The coffee is fantastic (highly recommend it) and I love getting take away as the cup comes with the pink lid. There muffins are delicious (probably my all-time favourite), I love that they have an option to purchase smaller muffins as I find the large ones too big for me.

The garden set-up and decor caught our eyes as we searched for a lovely place to eat lunch. We sat down and the friendly staff took our orders. From that point everything went downhill. We waited three quarters of an hour for our over-cooked food, and despite three people informing staff about a severe allergy to egg, the kitchen did not take enough care, and the child quickly developed an allergic reaction. Unfortunatly this has ruined the rest of our day. Wouldn't reccomend this diner..

Trunk diner is has a nice casual atmosphere. Great place to stop for a coffee and a chat. I also had the corn fritters for brunch. It was delicious.
Flying Forward
Points for: beautiful courtyard, American classics <br/>Dine Time: weekday lunch<br/><br/>Trunk has a beautiful courtyard wrapping around the building with lots of tables and plenty of shade. It's a really nice atmosphere, especially on a balmy night when the fairy lights are up.<br/><br/>They have quite a variety of American classics on the menu, but since I'm on a health binge, I opt for the salads. A lot of the ingredients I like anyway - roast pumpkin, charred broccoli, hummus (which was a tad on the salty side) with poached chicken and a nice lemon dressing.<br/><br/>This place would be pretty good on a cheat night with beers and a cheese kransky.
Foodie AC
Cookie in skillet dessert. All you need to know really. Delicious. <br/><br/>Actually the rest of the food was great too- wings, hot dog, burger. Great versions of diner classics. Only criticism is that we prefer a regular frankfurt, but that's being picky. <br/><br/>Very friendly and attentive service. <br/><br/>And that cookie dessert...
Melbourne Culinary
We ended up visiting Trunk Diner on a cold Winter night after watching a movie in the Melbourne CBD. The American diner style food that they served was exactly what we were looking for and the large dining area was perfect for our large group of people.
Good Food Good Mood
I have been to Trunk the restaurant on many an occasion, the other night i tried Trunk diner, the more casual option of the two. The food was suitably more basic with the menu mostly comprised of a variety of burgers. The Zomato menu lists several salads but their updated version in venue had only one available so poached chicken it was. It was tasty enough as far as salads go and really quite cheap at $15.50. Atmosphere wise a Friday night is heaving with the after work crowd so it's very loud. It's much nicer sitting outside (particularly in summer) but that wasn't really an option on this rainy evening. There's no table service but the staff are friendly and accommodating and they allowed me to alter my dish to remove the loathsome pickled onions. Good pick for drinks but not my favourite for food due to limited options. Desserts sound amazing though
Cynthia Giang
Hmm. With the relatively decent reviews Trunk Diner has, I guess I set the expectations and bar too high. An American style diner with interiors, but photos looked more flash than when I came. Average service and food was nothing memorable.
Chantelle Hiley
I have high expectations for a melbourne breakfast so unfortunately this wasn't great. My pumpkin quesadilla tasted ok but the problem was that our drinks and food took so long to arrive.
Carmel
A delightful place for a light meal before a show. We ate here with the kids and they were happy with their meals and I was happy with the option of fresh veggies in stead of the usual fries. <br/><br/>We ate the quesadillas and as a light meal they were perfect, but if we were having a main meal I think they might not have been quite enough.<br/><br/>Lovely staff, casual atmosphere and family friendly. Service was timely and I never felt pressured or worried about curtain raise for our show!
Clive Green
Food was good manager was extremely aggressive and arrogant will definitely not be back which is a pity as we really enjoyed the burgers and have recommended the place to a lot of people
WineLover
Trunk Diner is one of those places thats perfectly alright but has nothing terribly exciting about it. I had the Chicken Quesedilla, which they kindly made a gluten free version for me, which was relativley bland but cheap enough that I feel I can't really complain. Service was friendly if slow and the decor is open and airy. Good spot to enjoy drinks on a sunny day but I wouldn't bother much with the food.
Mikayla Green
While the burger is good but would be better with any kind of sauce the service is average at best and the managers attitude is appalling! None of the group I went with will go back after encountering the rude and arrogant manager. After ordering a thickshake I received a milkshake. It's rare that I order dessert due to trying to watch calories so when I do I hope it's worth the calories. So I politely let them know of the mistake. A while later the manger slammed the drink on the table and said he was charging us more for the extra ice cream. Though honestly there was. Though there was no difference in the shake to be honest. At the end he tried to charge an extra $6 for the shake making it $12. When the issue was approached he got aggressive and if he had halved the extra we would have paid it and come back again. Now we will never eat there and make sure not to recommend it based on his behaviour. He ruined an otherwise enjoyable night out.

Nice cozy restaurant in a great location. Food was tasty however not worth it for the price. As in burgers dont come with anything and are small so a side is needed. However its cooked to perfection. Overall a good place in a good location
MELB JOURNAL
Trunk is one of those institutions that have been around for a long time and you know what to expect every time you go. The venue has a couple of different dining options. They have their diner which offer American style food and their restaurant located in the larger building which offer a larger menu. Most recently I had their Puttanesca pizza which was topped generously and the ingredients were fresh. The base however was sloppy and couldn't hold the ingredients. Trunk has a relaxed environment perfect for after work drinks or catching up with friends.
Mark Laughton
I stumbled across this place whilst roaming through the CBD and was impressed. The food was simple but it was one of the best hot dogs I've had in a long time. The courtyard area is a really nice place to eat especially in the summer and the staff were also very friendly.
Tessa Eats
My second time to Trunk Diner.<br/>Good American diner menu, very relaxed vibe. <br/>Ordered Animal Style Fries and The Ron Swanson Hotdog. <br/>Both dishes were very tasty with good flavours.<br/>May return, but would probably rather seek out somewhere new to try.
Vic Fenech
Been here  few times over the past 12 months and have always found it one of the best places to visit for a good breakfast in the  Melbourne CDB......  BUT..... Not sure what has taken place since my last visit but it was a very average experience  this morning. <br/><br/>Staff seemed pleased to inform us of a 10% surcharge  for Sundays as a greeting, followed by cold porridge,  a downsize from the pervious  eggs/bacon and hash browns and a katty staff member who thought splitting the bill was like asking for a limb replacement...  YOU HAVE LOST US TRUNK... Bring back the old manager/chef or owners, who ever you have replaced..<br/><br/>For the record, i don't mind paying the extra 10% but please don't think you are doing us a favour by visiting your establishment...  There are many places in Melbourne who can outshine what you had on offer today.
FOOD TRIP
Trunk Restaurant and Bar is a great place to catch up with friends after work, maybe grab a drink or a bite to eat. The place itself is massive. It has an expansive outdoor garden area, super popular for just relaxing with some after work drinks. As you head into the restaurant itself, it has a cosy atmosphere where you can enjoy some sit down meals. Food is on the pricier end while the quality is average at best. Would recommend as a bar, but not so much as a restaurant.
World Eats Food
An American styled diner, with a great courtyard. Perfect for drinks and summer time chill sessions. Burger was boring and quite small, and the milkshakes was average. I tried the golden gaytime milkshake and it was not special. Service was slow so I probably most likely won't be coming back.
Sarah
Perfect coffee and delicious pastries! Coffee didn't even need sugar (and I always have sugar). Dark chocolate and pistachio biscotti was to die for and I wished I had time to go back and get some more. My husband also enjoyed his chocolate, banana and caramel muffin.
Brungiel
The burgers here are quite good, especially the plain wagyu one which is a delicious patty cooked to perfection. However, the room can be really loud and echoey and some of the staff had pretty poor attitudes (some others were great!!) Last note: when your restaurant has a crap system that doesn't split bills easily, you either: a) don't offer split bills or b) you do and deal with the pain. What you don't do is let customers split bills (based on cost of items alone) and then complain about having to add up prices of several items and make the customer do so... I eat lunch out to get away from my maths classes!
Anonymous Hungry Hippo
Omg the absolute burger in Melbourne. I want to throw up just thinking about it. The atmosphere is nice though so it's nice to go for a drink.
Takeshi Kaga
Very tasty burger! <br/><br/>Pros:<br/>+Delicious juicy patty, good char on the outside <br/>+Soft, unobstructive bun<br/>+Overall very nice and simple flavour (no sauce, no cheese, just the flavour of the patty) <br/><br/>Cons:<br/>-Not enough pickles, it would have been more enjoyable to have some pickle in every bite
Mildred
Delicious food, way better than any Diner. The quality really comes through too with brunch. However serving sizes do vary dramatically for items of similar price.
Melbourneats
Lovely exterior at night time.<br/>Food wasn't too bad, would give it a 2nd try. <br/>Staff were attentive and lovely.<br/>Take your lover here and friends here.
Simmyeats.Melb
I would of been more generous on the rating if it wasn't for the dreadful buffalo wings with the hot sauce, oh my goodness what a terrible dish.  The hot sauce tasted like a vinegar and was not pleasant at all, actually inedible.  The burgers on the other hand were absolutely delicious, fries were good too.  Venue is nice, lovely outdoor area and the service was good too.
Scomanda
We had a hankering for a burger and decided to drop in whilst in the city with the kids. We ordered two burgers from the kids menu, the Waygu beef burger and the pulled pork quesadillas and side of the taco bout it fries. My son who loves burgers but struggled eating his burger - he said it tasted funny. As for myself, my burger was also not enjoyable. It tasted burnt but the meat had no flavour. It was just a chunk of meat. On the flip side, my husband enjoyed his pulled pork quesadillas. <br/><br/>The service was good and the concept good. Unfortunately, it was let down by the food standard.
Vee
Lovely spot to day drink and just chill out! The Animal Style Fried were excellent. I don't usually like Shoestrings but these were crunchy and smothered in the sauce and bacon. The Hot Sauce Wings were pretty average and the Burger was alright, pretty sad even. Housemade Iced Tea was perfect for a sunny day. Their cocktail selection is great as well. If it does get too sunny or rain, go inside!
Split The Bill
Been here on a semi regular basis for the past 3 years. They make a nice wagu burger (I like mine well done) with a side of the chilli fries.<br/>Went on Friday for a Xmas catch up with work however the indoor diner was closed for a private function. We had to sit outside which was not great for a cold and windy Melbourne day!!<br/>Overall the food is great and fresh but if you can sit in the diner it makes it a much more pleasant experience.
Deborah Perkins
Food was ok. We sat right beside the kitchen which appeared to be very dirty. Pots and pans on floor along with rubbish. Grease on walls...yuk, turned right off my mediocre Cuban Sandwich. Courtyard is nice for drinks. Diner is noisy with steel chairs and average service.
Anna Yong
Nice Sunday afternoon weather - perfect spot for lunch as Trunk had a fabulous outdoor area. Staff were great & attentive but the food - underwhelming. We had the cheese burger & salad.. Defo be back for drinks, the atmosphere was great, food meh
Tomas
Good for a coffee and some lunch (or any meal really). Their staff are friendly and approachable, the building looks cool and is a little quirky with their cheeky signs. The breakfast options are very solid and cover all the usual Melbourne brunch staples nicely.<br/><br/>This place is full of suits on warm nights in the evenings having after work drinks. Better to go for brunch when it's nice and relaxed.
Yes Girl
The peach ice tea is the most confusing thing, don't order it. It was like a very watered down peach juice with sorbet on top...? Not quite right
VanPancake
Interesting concepts, could be better - almost there. Not bad though......... the peach ice tea and the lemon lime and bitters probably don't go there
Meg
Love the ambience. But it would be very hot during the summer. I had the wagyu burger with blue cheese, it was mediocre. But the sausage taste quite good.
Abbey V
This is a great place to go and unwind, especially with the summer months approaching. Despite arriving after the lunch rush, service was a tad poor. Ordered the chicken club sandwich with fries and my friend ordering the wagyu beef burger, it was worth the wait - fresh, hot and filling. Would be keen to try their breakfast menu for a brunch date in the future!
Jesskaar
A good place to eat and drink, without having to fight for a table. There's plenty of room! <br/><br/>"The Business" hotdog is a sure fire winner (perhaps it was cause I had been drinking) and the burgers are pretty decent. <br/>
Food For The Soul
One of the Best burgers in Melbourne, always comes medium rare and quality meat. Negative starting to cater for the new gen... Veggie and green stuff, thin chips!!!! Other plus great beer choice and a weekly burger special. Changes every week... Surprises (gotta Love It).
Arijit Das
It's hard to do a review on an establishment such as Trunk (both the bar and the restaurant). However I will give it my best. To start with - the food is awesome. First of all - try the pizzas. You won't regret it. Secondly - the burgers are some of the best. Still hungry? Make way for the quesadillas. Keep sipping on the vino. The list reads really well; albeit a tad pricey. Wines are about $10 a pop. Some higher. A great place to spend the evening with family/mates/colleagues/anyone you care to share a night out with. Also make sure you try their salads for lunch (out of this world!).
EpiCurious
This is great spot for brunch or a relaxed dinner after work. Especially great in the sun. The space is a little crammed, but service prompt and very friendly.
Alana C
Been here quite a few times and have always been impressed.<br/>During the day they can accommodate for any age group and, with a booking, they'll accommodate any number of people.<br/>The setting is absolutely beautiful in all parts of the restaurant and creates awesome vibes.<br/>The food comes in god sized portions and is packed with flavor! My faves are the quesidilla's and nachos. Only thing I wouldn't recommend is the burgers - they come deconstructed, are a little too small and a little too simple.<br/>Otherwise great place to hang out with mates and enjoy some good food and banter 👍
Tardar Sauce
--August 2017--<br/>We ordered well before 2 other groups arrived however they seemed to receive their meals before the 2 of us! I had to ask the waiter what was happening with out meals. The club sandwich was alright. My friend thought the fries had too much salt but I didn't mind them. If you sit on the talker outside tables, be weary of the lights as birds tend to sit on them and a guy behind out table said a bird defecated on him. đŸ’© <br/><br/><br/>---July 2016---<br/>Chicken quesadillas were alright. What I would expect from a diner - not amazing, but not bad either. The services in here can be a little tricky - having to try and wave down a waiter, but to be fair, they do get very busy at lunchtimes. Not a place I would come with a large group for a meal as all the seated areas appear to be for 4 or less. Still worth checking out though! The outdoor area is a work favourite in the summertime.

Huge wait for simply hot dogs to be prepared. Sorry, I thought countercultural hipster restaurants were perfect but on this occasion, they were not. Not coming back.

Ate two delicious breakfasts here on a weekday and weekend. Had the Mexican eggs & bacon tortilla with a side of gourmet sausage which was hearty and perfect for a cold morning. Next visit i was in need of a vegie fix so i had the Wiz-Kale-Leafa which is an assortment of leafy greens with eggs and i added a side hash brown. That breakfast was a tasty healthy start to the day and the hash browns here are thick, crispy and honestly the best i've ever had. Service was good and they were busy.

So disappointed! I have had friends rave about this place.....clearly they just go for the alcohol perhaps! Naturally, I was excited to try Trunk since I always hear about it as a cool after work hang out. My experience there left me feeling so disappointed and really annoyed. There was bird poop everywhere - table, chairs, bottles of sauce etc. My meal was a wagyu burger and the patty was supposed to be medium rare (which is my perfect way to eat meat)....it was completely raw meat inside. I couldn't even eat it and felt sick for the rest of the evening. We waited quite a while for the food to come out despite it being fairly quiet, so by the time I bit into the burger, we didn't have time to ask them to re-make the burger. We told the waiter that the meat in the patty was raw in the middle and he tried to actually argue with us that that's how it's meant to be cooked according to the menu's "medium rare" tag. This was the worst part for me. Customer service goes a long way and he really ought to have taken our complaint on board. We were very calm and polite in addressing our issue. This was not ok. At the end of the day they should have taken the complaint on the chin and at least acknowledged what we were saying. Huge thumbs down for me and we won't be returning.

I've been here 4 times over the past 12 months. Every time I hope for it to be better, but every time it's progressively worse. The ambience is nice but the food is poor. They've changed the menu for the worse, it's on the dearer side, yet a chicken burger is a small fillet, on a greasy soggy bun, no chips and simply on a small plastic tray (like McDonald's). Disappointing!

Been here a couple of times. Perfect diner feel. Great for drinks and food is decent too. Have tried their salads, burgers, coffee, egg bacon Mexican wrap, sandwich - all were decent but nothing extra ordinary. Overall a decent place which caters to decent breakfast, lunch and a good evening after work.

Not overly impressed. Food just had no love. Our table had a hot dog, breakfast burger, beef burger, quesadillas and fries. No one raved about their meal and one person felt sick a couple of hours later. Might not have been the food but who knows? Wait staff seemed unimpressed to be there too.

Good service, nice people, poor food, greasy Mac n cheese, "mild" Bloody Mary consisted mainly of Tabasco sauce and caused third degree burns 😒

Nice ambience but my veggie burger was dry, for some reason deconstructed (lettuce, onion, and pickles on the side), small, and the pattie fell apart on the first bite. Had to eat it with a knife and fork.<br/><br/>Maybe the other food is better but the serving size for all dishes could improve. Similar size issue with friends' meals.

Place was amazing with all the trees around and a grape tree above partially covered, small birdies flying around chirping with the beautiful weather adding to is totally worth sitting and enjoying your food here. Food was good the burger was okayish-good , Fries with cheese was good, salads were okay too. Th3 staff were very friendly and Service was also great.

I am pretty disappointed with this place. I was really looking forward to having an amazing burger and a creamy milkshake but my expectations were not met. I had the Wagyu Burger. The burger was so small, about the same size as a McDonald's cheeseburger and the presentation wasn't appealing at all, as you had to add the fillings and sauces yourself. The strawberry milkshake tasted like Nesquik, it wasn't thick and creamy and it wasn't cold.  I also ordered large chips, definitely too small to be considered large. On a positive note, the patty was thick and tasted reasonably ok, some staff were friendly, the area is open and spacious and the atmosphere is laid back.

Came here for lunch on a Thursday afternoon and the food came out quickly and was spot on. The menu isn't too expensive either. Ordered the uncut salad, fries and the meatless Seattle and would definitely get them again. Staff were super friendly too. Will be coming back again and also want to make it for a night out as their cocktails look really good too!

Fantastic venue for a function. The staff are lovely, the vibe is lively and fun. Gorgeous courtyard with a 100yr old tree in the middle. Very Melbourne, steeped in interesting history (used to be a synagogue, a school, a kindergarten & many other restaurants before becoming Trunk Diner) <br/>The pizzas and pastas are authentic Italian style, great wine selection and creative cocktail mix. <br/>Take your work friends here for lunch or family for a weekend dinner.

I tried out this place last Sunday. It has a lovely outdoor sitting area giving it a laid back vibe.<br/>I had the chicken burger. The burger was tasty, though I would have liked it if the size was slightly bigger! <br/><br/>Overall a nice experience and would definitely be heading here for after work drinks. <br/><br/><br/>

Great burger although I would have liked it to be a bit larger. An extensive selection of additions to the burger but can make the burger a bit expensive. For example cheese and bacon adds $4.50 to the price. The shoestring fries were delicious.

Trunk American Diner offers hearty breakfast in a bright and friendly environment. I wish I had stomach space for the milkshakes or breakfast cocktails because they sound phenomenal to me. The food we tasted was good and filling but not as outstanding or creative as other meals we tried in Melbourne. The coffee was a disappointment.

Cool diner with a nice atmosphere. The burgers are quite good and the "stupidly hot wings" are really really hot. Probably the hottest wings I've tried so far.

Lovely leafy location within the concrete jungle of the CBD. Wagyu beef burger was small but very tasty. Also tried the Richard Simmons salad and veggie burger. Good fries. Service was a little gruff but they were busy on this Sunday sunny afternoon. Would be a great place return for after-work drinks in the outside area.

My partner and I had a quick dinner here on a Thursday. Good atmosphere, we had to wait a little bit for our food but when it arrived it was actually the freshest hottest burger I've had - actually straight off the grill! I had chicken, he had wagyu and we shared the chilli fries. Would go back if we were in the area looking for a tasty meal. Ill try it for breaky next time!

I came here couple of months back because i had to open my big mouth for to try their spicy chicken wings its says on the menu that sauce they use is 900 hundred times more spicer than the usual, boy that was spicy i start drining tomato sauce after having a one bite and wherever i touch on my body its start burning too so i would recommend to go slow when you come across this kind of challange

Trunk Diner was one of several dining spots that I had been dying to visit, after hearing some reviews on its game changer milkshakes. It has a nice, casual interior, which made us (My friend and myself) felt comfortable dining at the restaurant. . It was not the first time I visited the restaurant. Back in winter, I along with my sister had made a visit during dinner hour only to left with disappointment. We were unsuccessful to grab a table due to a private event.
Mariposa
NY style diner with external dining space bringing to Melbourne simple and hearty street food. The design is spacious, simple and casual to match the style of the food. Staff were friendly and efficient.<br/>As the most popular and iconic NY dude food, we chose to sample the wagyu beef burger. Thick patty charred to medium rare with the cheese as extra - melted on top- embraced in a brioche bun. The burger appears relatively small, however, it's very rich and filling. The beef patty is very soft and juicy- high drip alert! The veggies were served next to the burger: cos lettuce, slice of tomato & a ribbon of divine pickled zucchini!. After further analysis of the burger, I concluded that due to the level of its juiciness, separating the veggies from the burger is logical to avoid sogginess and maintain our dignity with controlling messiness! Very thoughtful! Over all the burger was tasty with perfect textures and juiciness, for a more high impact flavor there are a variety of sauces to add (I loved it the way it came though!!).. We sampled the golden and crunchy fries with aioli sauce- loved the level of saltiness and addictive crunchiness!! Will definitely be back - especially for the desserts! ; )
