Loved the Beef in Mongolian sauce, the crispy beef and the Honey chicken. This one dish was something like chicken and nuts in hot chilli sauce or something it was really really good but not for the faint hearted Haha. Just tad bit too much salt in this one.
Veggie Dumplings were great and get the pan fried buns because they are soft and yum with the underside crispy having sesame seed goodness.
Rice were Meh but didn't matter with all the other dishes being so good. Service was exceptionally fast and the coconut icecream is really good. Wanted the green tea icecream but they were all out.
Randomly stumbled upon this place and so glad I did!

Generous portion, huge huge container of fried rice. Probably sufficient to feed two individuals. Decent portion of ingredients & wasn’t overwhelmed with rice only.
I love their touch screens for ordering! it's also a common place of choice for our team lunches too. The chilli dumplings are really nice - the sauce is just so yummy - it really makes or breaks a dish!
The xiao long bao is nice as well, but the skin seemed to have gotten thicker than usual now.

The place to go for dumplings! My friend and I came here for lunch and shared the Shao Long Bao, panfried dumplings, and pork shumai. So delicious. The dumplings go perfectly with a mixture of vinegar, soy sauce and chilli sauce. There were so much dumplings, and we couldn't quite finish them. The restaurant looks small when you enter, but we were taken downstairs which had a large seating area. It was quite busy, so you have to get there early to get a seat. Service is very efficient and prices are reasonable.

Great dumplings and BYO drinks place ! Our favourite dish is the chilli wontons! The sauce it comes with is the perfect combination between sweet and spicy.
Been here twice now. Love the novelty of ordering off touch screens but have to say the photos really don’t do the food justice. The portions sizes were a lot larger than expected so careful not to over order. Most dishes I would say are designed to share. We had the sweet and sour fish and a soup. Both were huge portions. Very tasty sweet and sour fish. Would come back with a group for sure.

When I am craving for dumplings, I go China Red! One of my another favourite Chinese restaurants in the town. Have been to this place numerous times and every time ai visit I would always order the Spicy Won Ton and Stir fried string beans with spicy minced pork. I know it limits my options to explore other dishes but absolutely love these! This goes really well with their special fried rice.
Their service is really quick and the fastest so far I have come across. The food arrives in no time. The food is ordered on a screen attached next to your table, so when you order first dish and scrolling for your next dish, the first one is already in preparation hence reducing the wait time!
The dumplings are really amazing here. There are lot of other things on the menu but I find it really hard to overcome my love for dumplings when I am here, hence end up ordering them! If you love dumplings, this is the place for you. This place is also a BYO so you can bring your own wine to enjoy with the meal!
Love love love the fish fillet in spicy oil! Fried squid is another favourite. Service is quick and convenient to order from you table via the screen. A must visit.
China Red is part of the Hutong Group, well known for popular establishments like Crux & Co, Hutong, Manton Kitchen, and others.
* Their xiao long bao is a bit of a showcase and it shows, because getting a table during peak times can be challenging.
Ordering from the touchscreen pad is straight forward and simple, and the wait for my xiao long bao wasn’t too long either.
The skin is not as delicate as other places, but each dumpling holds plenty of delicious porky broth.
* Fried rice with kimchi and xo sauce – great flavours with a mildly smoky spiciness from the XO sauce, and a sour zing from bits of chopped kimchi.
* Spicy wonton – good flavour, not as much vinegar in the sauce as I was expecting. For me, it wasn’t spicy so it’s good for those who can’t take the heat.
Efficient service and affordable prices, China Red is a decent place for your dumpling fix!

China Red got our attention for having crocodile meat on their menu....Then were we supposed to stop ourselves ? No ways! We have tried Crocodile meat earlier and loved it....Explains why? 😝😝 Another interesting fact about this place is that the orders are placed by guests on the Tablets

Portions are big and food delicious , though the Crocodile Stir Fry was clearly the winning dish. Not at all rubbery or chewy...And perfectly spiced.
Loved the fish floating in an extremely spicy yet yummy oil.

Always great to dine here, my go to dishes are the dumplings and the Shanghai fried noodles. My friend and I are regulars when we need to satisfy our dumpling cravings.
Haven't been here in a while, food and service was better. The restaurant doesn't look very big when you walk in but it's definitely spacious with comfortable booth downstairs.
Service was prompt and staff was polite although they seem to remove our plates as soon it was cleaned of food; giving us the sense not to hang around too long. We were here for a catch up over wine; the drinks options is great but didn't feel like the best atmosphere for the occasion.
Our food came out quickly, freshly made, and well seasoned. The price is not budget friendly but serving size is good. Lots of options for entree, main, desserts, and catering for vegetarians.
What the hell, have not had one bad meal here! Service is impeccable also lunch specials are great value. Can’t go wrong with the combo fried noodles, xlb, salt n pepper squid or the chilli fish. The flavour in the Mongolian beef sizzling plate was a bit weird for our liking, each to their own!
I visited on 01.09.18. I ordered prawn toast, fried gyoza and a lemon, lime and bitters. When I ordered fried dumplings I thought it meant pan fried not deep fried. Oh well I enjoyed them all the same.
The service was prompt but my table didn't have access to the self ordering ipads on the wall.
Will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu.
Update: visited again on 16.03.19 and steamed pork dumplings and sesame prawn again. Always fast and delicious!

Our family visit to the city invariably includes China Red as a pit stop. Kids love the touch screen ordering system and the services makes McDonald look like a snail. The menu is quite extensive and includes the traditional variety of dumplings, soups, noodles, rice and soup dishes
Our order comprised of:
1. Prawn fried dumplings which were mouthwatering and a tad greasy making it more sinful to enjoy
2 Wontons in chilli oil which tasted amazingly delicate
3. Special fried rice which was very special as the kids devoured it like a famine was about to arrive
4. Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce which was yummy and relatively crisp
Our alcohol order of Jack Daniel's and Coke lacked the mark by a wide berth so mixed drinks is not the forte here.
When I rate establishments, I do so balancing price, service and quality of food in mind.
I rate this as a goto place for consistent cheap and cheerful Chinese fair.

I very much enjoyed my meal here. My favourite was the wontons in spicy sauce (the sauce is more sweet than spicy). Also had xiao long baos and pork buns, both of which were delicious. Everything tasted like they were freshly made. The baos were fluffy. The "skin" on the xiao long bao is a bit thicker than some other places but I did not mind that. At least the soup inside is not going anywhere! There's a screen that you order from. Some may find that impersonal but I think it's efficient and the food comes out fairly quickly. I will be coming back!
Found this gem by chance. Really good quality food, very efficient service and a variety of choice. Portions were big but most importantly the food was tasty, and delicious. Reasonably priced too!

I have shortlisted this place on my CBD favorites. Yum! This place really surprised me. Service is good, fast, and I totally loved the ordering touch-screen system - very fun. Tables were clean and staff was nice and did not stack dirty dishes on my nose like most restaurants in the area. All our food was yummy and other people's meals looked really appealing. Dumplings at this place are among Melbourne's best (try the wontons in spicy sauce...omg). Price tags were very reasonable. Venue is good to catch up with friends and enjoy a meal and drinks without going bankrupt. I'm not rating 5 stars only because the place was incredibly noisy (probably because it was very busy), so if you can't put up with the noise I suggest you ask/wait for a table upstairs. Anyway, China Red caught me... I can't wait to come back and try more things from the menu!

A fun experience. Order by tablet and have dishes and drinks landing on your table before you’ve completely finished ordering. Really tasty food in a friendly upbeat environment. Definitely recommend. The spicy wontons and honey chicken are two personal favourites. Reasonably well priced.
My friends and I often come to China Red for a quick feed after work, and it always hits the spot. The fried rice is delicious and flavoursome, always with plenty of egg. The dumplings are great - particularly the wontons in chilli sauce (we always order at least 2 serves of these) and I also really like the vegetable dumplings - they are more flavoursome than a lot of other places. Service is quick and ordering from the tablet is a fun novelty. The service is nothing special, but not bad. China Red is not as cheap as a long of other 'cheap and cheerful' dumpling joints in the city, however the quality of the food is better so I'm happy to pay a bit more to go there. It would be great if you could book a table online rather than having to call.
First things first, order the Spicy Wontons, they are always the first thing I order here and probably my favourite spicy wontons in Melbourne. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were the most popular item on the menu at China Red. Xiao-Long-Bao is always decent as well, good size and juicy, not the best but it’s up there. One of my Chinatown staples.

We have been here a number of times, and honestly can't say a bad thing about China Red... The touch screen ordering is great and the delivery of food and drinks is quick... The fact you can keep a eye on your bill with the touch screen is also great... You should try this place and a must is the spicy dumpling and fried custard buns... Not to mention value for money... I timed how long it took for the beer to come after we used the touch screen ordering system - 10 seconds. Amazing. Pan fried dumplings were probably a little over cooked but the XLB dumplings were amazing. Those little pockets of soupy goodness were tops; some of the best!! Get there for some cheap and cheerful!

Good Chinese restaurant in the city. There’s a decent amount of vegetarian dishes on the menu. The vegetarian dumplings were tasty even though the skin was thick (sorry I forgot to take a photo of the dumplings). The vegetarian fried rice was oily but still nice. The Chinese broccoli with garlic was loaded with cloves of garlic! Service was fast, especially when it comes to taking the bill. The restaurant has two floors but only one unisex toilet.
Fantastic value for tasty and authentic Shanghai-ness food. We spent around $90 for four people and had leftovers.
Service is ridiculously quick (particularly when you ask for the bill).

Amazing food. I lobe the special friend rice it’s so fresh and authentic. The vegetarian dumplings are so amazing too, dipped in soy sauce and yum. I had a mango drink with coconut cream omg was so amazing. Book in advance as they get busy but you won’t be disappointed with the food here
The different types of dumplings here are delicious! We went nuts and ordered spicy won ton, pan fried pork dumplings, shao long bao and fried pork and chive dumplings. The quality of dumplings here is better than average dumplings in Chinatown, in my humble opinion.
The spicy won ton is beautiful, the skin has a silky texture and you can taste the freshness of the prawn inside. Service is very efficient and friendly. It’s best to rock up earlier (e.g. 6pm) on a busy Friday night to get a table.
Really lovely and delicious. Could do with some more bathrooms... but service is great and fast and the food is tasty. Dumplings are great too. We were really pleased with the meal.
Went here for a quick pre-show dinner. The iPad ordering made this extremely easy. Food arrived quick and hot. We had the pork xiao long bao, the spicy wontons, the dolphin prawn dumplings and the stir fried chinese broccoli with oyster sauce.
The pork xiao long bao were pretty standard. The spicy wontons were my favourite, but they're better at Mr Huang Jin. The chinese broccoli was pretty expensive for what it is, but it was cooked perfectly. The dolphin prawn dumplings I mainly ordered for instagram. They were a bit dry. I wouldn't order them again.

We went there for lunch and ordered a variety of dim sum/dumplings. But we always come back for their Spicy wontons. Great flavours and just the right amount of spice!
Also their special fried rice was full of flavour.

China red is a restaurant inside a complex in Chinatown. They are usually crowded and there can be waiting at times. We tried their pork dumplings (must try) and couldn't resist repeating the order. They dumplings just melts in your mouth, too soft to even chew and has the ultimate flavours. It's like a festival in your mouth. This is our must visit restaurant in Chinatown. Divin Paul

Been here for lunch and dinner a multitude of times; their initial grand opening reeled in many customers and their touch screen ordering system were built just for the restaurant, and before the iPad- how technology savvy!
The interior gives off a real Chinese vibe, and at the front of the store you can see the chefs folding the dumpling skins. Their special fried rice 楊州炒飯, seafood and beancurd soup 海鲜豆腐湯, egg custard bun 迷你奶黃包 and pork xiao long bao 南翔小籠包 are some of my few highlights. Price is extremely reasonable, and the servings are not overly large or too small. I enjoy dining here, and do recommend.
A decent Chinese restaurant. Loved their plum drink, it was so damn delicious. Spicy fish and the Singapore prawns were quite tasty too, average dumplings though. A unique experience for me ordering from the tablet and seeing the staff only when food arrives or cleanup is required. Don't mind coming back.

Food is cooked fresh with lots of flavour, and the staff are very friendly. We tried a large variety of dumplings and enjoyed them all. You can also order from a touch screen on your table which is pretty cool!
I like the spring onion pancakes, pork mince with string beans, the spicy dumplings, vegetarian dumplings and XO sauce rice noodles and probably everything else on the menu if I had the stomach to try it all. Chinese street food by electronic screen tapping is also a plus!
I have not been here since they started implimenting orders by touchpad. On a whim we ended up here and waited a good 15 minutes on a busy friday night. Once ushered downstairs we instantly got ordering.
Shortly after the order (seems to be a common theme, fast service) the food started to flow to our table. The XLB here were great and scorching! I've been accustomed to more moderate tempatures. The chilli wontons were also fantastic and firey but not great value for 8pcs, most dumpling places throw in 15pcs. The fried dumplings were not the best variations I've had, felt like the fillings were lackluster.
The salt and pepper squid is predictably enjoyable as was the kimchi fried rice. That was my fill of greasy foods after a good night out.

Prompt service, and was please with the flavours of all selected dishes. Prices are reasonable the only down Side is the level of noise. Definatly wouldnt go for a quiet meal. Expect to be in competition in volume with the table next to you.

China red is a great place for dumplings, its one of our 'go-to' when dinning on Chinatown. There is always a queue here but while you wait you can watch chefs make the dumplings through the window. We love ordering on the touch screen its so quick & easy to use & you can even press a bottom to request your bill.
This place does the best shang hai dumplings in Melbourne! The touch screen menu makes ordering a breeze. The only thing I don't like about this place is the dessert menu. A mango dessert tasted off once so we tried something else next time and it looked quite different to the picture. The desserts always tend to take longer to serve whilst the chinese dishes are always served promptly. The spicy crispy prawn is pretty amazing too!
China Red is an absolute go to when it comes to fast and good quality Chinese food with no fuss. We sat down at our table at about 8pm and had finished our meals (entrees and mains) by 8:25 - talk about service! All food is served fast and fresh... and is delicious.
China Red's Spicy Wonton Dumplings are superb - certainly have a good hit! Today we had the Deep Fried Diced Chicken with Chilli & Curry Leaf, which was flavoursome, sweet (not too spicy!) and hit the spot.
What makes China Red so much easier is it's self-serve screen and ordering - you order via the screen and before you blink an eye, the food is upon you!

Easy booking process with Zomato, and fast service at the restaurant made for a super relaxed experience. It is located within Midtown in Chinatown so can be a bit difficult to find (as with all good restaurants). Personally, I find the nanxiang steamed buns here to be the BEST I've had in Melbourne - the pastry doesn't stick to the plate so you can actually bite into it and drink the soup without losing any of that goodness. The spinach coloured dumplings were also fabulous, as were everything else we had! Would definitely recommend booking ahead here instead of lining up outside other restaurants in Chinatown in winter - saves so much hassle and so yum!

This afternoon I popped in for late lunch. They have a lunch menu which is available until 4.30!
The decór is lovely and gives a real traditional feel.
Orders are placed via touchscreen monitors, very convenient.
great little place I found when all of China town was closing early one Saturday evening around 9pm a few weeks before Christmas (quite absurd). Found the dumplings to be quite nice and fresh, the touch screen ordering is handy but the price for things considering you don't get much help from the food attendants is a bit higher than desirable. The quality makes up for the price though and they have a great range of drinks too. Have been there 2 times now and will come again soon :)

I love coming to this place because of how easy it is to order food on the TV screen. The garlic and chilli soft shell Crabs are to die for I also love the wonton dumpling
While looks may be deceiving, China Red is a spacious restaurant (there is an area downstairs too). The staff are a little stand off-ish, but the xiao long baos and other dumplings are quite delicious. They come with some finely sliced ginger, and add a harmonious balance to the dumplings. iPad service makes it really efficient to order.
I have come here so many times I have lost count. We like to get mapo tofu and the chilli oil dumplings are arguably my favourite, they beat all the others around this area. I even prefer the dumplings to those of the sister restaurant Hu-tong.

We all agreed that the best of all dishes we ordered was the cumin beef. I have tried similar dish in another restaurant which has overpowering cumin but this here is just great, well done! My second favourite dish was the crispy pork as I live the crumbs with shallot. But if you're not a fan of salt, this is not a place for you coz they put A LOT of salt in the dishes. And it's decent price, 4 dish for $102 can feed at least 5 people :)
Came here for a quick dinner before attending Frozen the musical. Staff were friendly. Ordering your meal and getting the bill is all done from the ipad. Super easy to use. Pork San choy bau was very very delicious. Dumplings were good, and prawns tasted fresh. Only negative is that there seemed to be less meals listed on the ipad menu than on the hard menu. I would love to come here again and try other items on the menu
You order from a screen at your table which is good although some navigation of menu can be a challenge due to scrolling about. Food arrived very quickly and tasted good. Only disappointing dish was the Chicken satay , which appeared more like a chicken curry than a typical satay dish. Prices were good and decor/mood was fine. Booth seemed clean and maintained. Cost was around $130 for our group of six.
First time trying out this place, but I did a takeaway instead of dining in. While waiting, I realised that this restaurant offer touch screen ordering which I thought was pretty cool. Usually you only see this in Japanese restaurants, and it’s the first time I see being offered in a Chinese restaurant.
Restaurant offer vegetarian dumplings and a variety of vegetarian dishes. You can also request to have certain dishes to omit the meat. For example, I ordered the green beans minus the meat, and it came out really delicious too! Prices are reasonable too. Will come back to try their other dishes.
