Their seating arrangement is split into smaller sections so it's not very ideal for a large group. The renkon chips and the karaage are highly recommended. Food - 7 Service - 8 Vibe - 6 Price - $$

Gyoza Douraku serves tapas style Japanese food. There is a large variety to choose from and most are between $6.80 and $8.00. It gives you an opportunity to try a lot of different dishes. We ordered the Yukke, Tuna Tataki, Ebi Kakiage, Soft Shell Crab Mini Burgers and Gyoza. All were very nice and we enjoyed the dishes we selected. In addition to the delicious dishes they serve cocktails. We had the Peach Sangria and the Strawberry Kiss. Both $15.90 as are all the cocktails by the glass. 1litre cocktail jugs are $24.90. They also have a large range of whisky, shochu, sake and teas. The only suggestion I would have is to have a little less ice in the drinks. The staff were friendly and helpful and service was good. Would recommend this restaurant for its range of dishes and drinks.

It’s a 4.2 for us. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal and hospitality here. This is an Izakaya style bar. It serves a range of fresh dumplings and small bar dishes. It’s a very good fun style of eating. Casual and very enjoyable. All the dishes are a good price and there’s an impressive range. 6-8 dishes will do it for you unless you’re seriously ravenous. We received a lovely greeting at the door. There was a good crowd in on a Monday. Spring is here and the city is beginning to wake after the long winter. The manager Hong recommended our dishes and a fantastic selection they were too. The special traditional pan fried pork and garlic gyoza are beautifully made gyoza. They were really lovely. The soft shell crab mini burger is a mighty dish too, one of the most popular we were advised and it was easy to see why. The salmon sashimi is a great dish. It’s really good quality salmon which is nicely cut and presented. Curiously, the salmon tataki was the least impressive dish for me. The Kinoko Hoiru/Yaki, foil baked mixed mushrooms, is a great selfish. These are lovely delicate mushrooms that are very nicely cooked and presented. Similarly, the crab cream croquette is an enticing dish that’s beautiful and creamy as promised. The wagyu steak dish is a cracker. I was critical a couple of weeks ago of a Japanese restaurant further up Bourke Street because of tough wagyu. The wagyu here was the complete opposite. It was superbly cooked lovely steak and in a very nice sauce. A terrific dish. Our last savory dish was Yakitori. This is a beauty too. It’s very tender moist chicken with a lovely BBQ flavour. After a good break we finished with very nice soft serve ice cream, green tea and roasted tea. This was a lovely clean fresh way to finish the night. We loved our night here. The only slight downer were the seriously noisy people in the neighboring booth. Such is life. The food and atmosphere was great. Our thanks for the invitation to dine here especially Hong the manager for taking such great care of us.

Really outstanding food, and fantastic value! My wife and I always visit here at least once every time we visit Melbourne! The quality of food and huge variety is certain to satisfy any taste, but it's the value that wins it for me. The size of portion and price beats so many others in Melbourne. It want busy when we ordered so service of all meals took around 5 minutes! Great if you have a short lunch break I guess. Visited today and will certainly be back again!

During my regular flights to Melbourne, I'm already thinking of this place at 39,000 feet. I land, and there is an almost desperate pilgrimage to my regular fix of Japanese excellence. If I was sum up my experience of Gyoza Douraku, it would be comparing it to Daiso (I love Daiso by the way). Everything (most things) are the same price ($6.80 per plate), therefore some things are great value, sound value and lesser value, so choose wisely! We were invited to try six plates, a drink and a dessert to share. We chose correctly! We enjoyed the gyoza in both forms, both pan fried and in a soup. The baked scallops were my personal favourite. The yukke (julienne raw beef with raw quail egg) is a take on steak tartare and was delicious (but not for everyone's taste). We also enjoyed the foiled baked japanese mushrooms in ponzu butter. The green tea and strawberry layered parfait was fun and a nice way to end the meal. Cocktails were extremely fun and delightful. It's a great japanese bar, cosy interior, well decorated and decked out, and had a great vibe. It seems to attract passers by which means it's doing the right things to bring people through the door. Service was friendly and responsive. Eager to please, and quick on the ball. I also liked that they put the expected wait times on dishes, so you know what you're getting yourself into. Overall, a fun take on Japanese tapas style dishes, at a decent price, in a fun hip spot. Tip: the spicy miso broth with the gyoza packed some heat, but it was delicious regardless.

Overall the food was delicious. But the crab burger was burnt and dry. We ordered gyoza, but after finished we found out we didn't get the sauce . The serving orders was weird, we got roasted rice ball in the end. Seat was crowded as well, my chair had been hustled several times.

I enjoyed the Japanese experience of taking our shoes off and the table set up...but having just come back from Japan, the food was disappointing in comparison. The service was very slow and most of our table had eaten at least two plates before I got my first plate. Overall, I felt it was a cheap, Australian, fast food version with not much authenticity. Love the food here - every dish is traditional and delicious and well priced with a exceptional range of gyoza dumplings on offer including daily specials. The wine list is fairly sparse, but the wines they do have are palate-pleasing, especially The Stump Jump Riesling.The private rooms are especially great if you can get one, but they do book out with larger groups. The biggest issue here is space - you're often sitting shoulder to shoulder. But that's pretty much how it is in Japan too. Credit cards accepted with surcharge and book ahead if you can. Go once, go often, go gyoza.

Amazing food, the okonomiyaki was delicious and every bit as nice as the okonomiyaki we had in Japan . We also loved the gyoza's. All the food is cooked fresh and isn't bought out all at once. I lived in Kobe-Osaka for 6 years, and I'm not easy to please when it comes to Japanese food. Loved the udon, age-dashi-dofu, and of course, the gyoza. Portions are small so you can try several dishes. Cost is very reasonable: my bill came to $55, including 2 delicious sake martinis. Will definitely be returning.

Firstly, when we first came, the staff was really nice. In fact, all of them are really nice, I'd say this place probably has the best service out of other gyoza gyoza branches, not that the others are not friendly but this branch is exceptionally friendly. The ambience is nice, there's different sections to sit, some places allow you to sit on the floor and have a cut out section for your feet, like traditional japanese restaurants. Another plus point is the promos, the asahi (330ml) is $9 but for $10, you get both the asahi and a pan fried gyoza (which you can choose the flavour yourself, so if you're vegan or not, choose up to what you like). But this promo is only for tuesday. Monday and Wednesday had other promo. The mixed vegetable and chives gyoza was good, a tad bit too salty but it was still good. The beer came later, and I had to ask for it. Same goes for the oriental twist cocktail. The cocktail was nice, not too sweet but a lil too weak, barely tasted the alcohol but it's actually good. When you write review you also can receive free parfait. Overall, I like this place.

First time here with a friend because the restaurant looks homey and so nice. The food is tapas size and turns out to be better than expected. We got soba, gyoza and okonomiyaki to pair with a jug of beer; but forgot to take the other pictures cause we dig in straight away. Ordered a few dishes and drinks using zomato gold c: we sat upstairs which was cosy, staff were really friendly but food on the other hand were on the average side 🙂 the gyozas were quite dry and bland, but chicken karaage and chicken wings were yummy! Everything else was okay. But otherwise it was a good experience ☺️

We ve come here many times, good as always, friendly staff and comfy environment. You can sit behand the glaze window, watch the beautiful scene of melbourne city. This time we come with my mom and my sister, they loved it as well, especially gyoza and mini soft shell burger. These are our must have, tasty and they are using fresh ingredients. Salmon sashimi is fresh and thick cut,.yukke is also fresh and fresh oyster with yuzu dressing is different and refreshing. During weeked and fridays, we recommend booking before you come. It does get.busy. Try they japanese rice wine if you can, they have the tasting size, so you can try many different dishes within one meal. Highly recommend, experience the japanese culture here, you will not regret trying. Most dishes are 6.8, price is resonable, even you come on yourself you can also have many differentdishes without costing much. Will come back again.

Absolutely fabulous. This place is amazing in so many ways. The staff are very friendly and the service is great. They have so many small meals that start at $6.80. This place is fantastic for those wanting to share meals and have a bite of everything. They have their very own Sake bar, which looks great and what I love even better is the layout of the restaurant. You can either, sit in a pod type thing or take your shoes off and go into a den type of spot. I loved their pan fried pork and garlic gyoza's with the make your own special sauce consisting of soy sauce, sesame seeds, minced garlic and chilli sauce. their Salmon Sashimi was so fresh and to die for, one of my highlights of the night. My favourite for the night was their popcorn chicken and the lime mayo. Their Wafu steak was pretty nice as well. I challenged myself to try and eat through their edamame beans and they were also fabulous. Couldn't really fault anything. Will definitely be going back. Thanks Gyoza Douraku

REAL RATING 3.5 STARS We popped in during lunch time on a week day. It's located in a great spot at the upper end of Bourke street just up from the tram stop. The interior is cute, dimly lit and intimate with small tables at the front and booths and a more private area down the back. There are loads of options on the menu and pretty much every dish is $6.8. The dishes are tapas style, so relatively small but just perfect for sharing and you can order a huge variety of different dishes and try all different things. We ordered sashimi, a couple of salads, steamed gyoza, lamb ribs, beef tataki, mini lobster burgers, cheesey scallops and tempura veggies. Everything other than the ribs was pretty good. Unfortunately the ribs were very fatty and didn't really have any actual meat. Favourite were the gyoza, flavoursome and fresh; and the tempura which was lite and tasty. The service was relaxed and friendly but slow, especially considering how empty they were when we visited and unfortunately we were restricted time wise during our lunch break. We ended up going and getting our own bottles of water twice and remind them about the drinks we'd ordered which never came. Overall GD is a solid option for tapas style Japanese food in the city and the prices are definitely a plus. A good option to pop in for a refuel while in your in the city.

I had the beef steak, tuna tataki and the cold soba. The best part about the place is we can have a variety of different dishes instead of one and not be full with that one. It is also a very cute date place. Would recommend the cold soba. The other two were ok ish. But the overall atmosphere is good for hangouts and dates with friendly staff.

Really great range of sake and umeshu here. Very reasonably priced too! The dishes are mostly $6.80 and sakes around $15 for 150ml. There’s also a bottomless drinks with a bunch of wines, a couple of cocktails, a beer and a sake to choose from. Fun place to go with friends.

Japanese tapas restaurant in a heart of Melbourne CBD. There are lots of options in their menu with affordable prices. Keep in mind portion wise is like an appetiser because it is tapas. Customer service is top notch as it was easy to get staff attention and they served you politely. 🥩 Beef tataki salad - taste was decent. Beef was chewy and I wasn’t a big fan of their salad dressing. 🐟 Tuna tataki - didn’t enjoy their dressing as well because it overpowered the whole dishes but tuna itself was alright. 🥟 pan fried prawn gyoza and pork gyoza- gyoza skin was delicate and thin which was a plus point. 👅 Gyu tan - not enough flavours. 🍢 Chicken yakitori - lack of seasoning. 🍚 Fried rice - decent fried rice. 🍗 Chicken karaage with mustard mayo - like the mustard mayo sauce. 🍦Mix green tea and houjicha softserve - my favourite in the house. This soft shell crab salad is good and the Japanese style egg omelette is worth trying. Although the place is a little bit tiny you may expect wait to be sited in rush hour, however the services is very friendly and accommodating. They have happy hrs for unlimited drinks and some sessions,maybe will give it a try next time. Overall a place that is worth to give it a try.

Ordered: 🍟 Lotus chips: deep fried lotus chips ($6.80) 🥗 Beef tataki salad: thinly sliced seared beef topped with grated radish, spring onion & sesame sauce ($8.00) 🍣 Tilapia sashimi with ponzu sauce: 4 pcs ($6.80) 🥦 Cauliflower karaage: Japanese style bite size deep fried cauliflower ($6.80) 🥟 Pan-fried gyoza with wagyu beef & red onion: 5pcs ($6.80) 🍳 Black truffle oil tamago yaki: japanese egg omlette with black truffle oil ($6.80) 🥟 Cheesy Gyoza: ($8.00) 🍗 Cheesy Chicken Kaarage ($8.00) Review: As the curse with having a lot to choose from, there were standout dishes and not-so-greats. Top 3 would recommend: cauliflower karaage, lotus chips & beef tataki salad. The cauliflower was unreal. It gives you the pseudo-fried guilty goodness but without the actual carbs. Your crunchy craving gets fulfilled, and you don't pack on with the cheap protein. It feels a lot lighter than chicken karaage as well! Lotus chips is always a good snack between the meals. It's also light, but salted incredibly well. Beef Tataki salad was a little chewy, but the nutty sesame sauce was amazing! Gyoza Douraku gets darker and more private as you go inside, so if you lose track of time and stumble out at 4am in the morning - don't be too shocked ☺. My extra recommendation is if you were to have the Cheesy dishes (i.e. Cheesy Gyoza/Cheese Chicken Kaarage) to have the dish first ASAP. A slightly lukewarm cheese dish leaves the cheese in a clumpy way that is not fun to consume at all. Thanks to MilkBarDigital for the experience!

We came here for a short dinner after work. Ordered a few entrees, gyoza and soup. Entrees: tuna tataki was great, cooked nicely and served with seaweed, wasabi and well balanced sauce. Japanese salad was nice too. We had 3 gyozas, pork with garlic, prawn pork, and a cheese gyoza with kimchi/pork. All were nice. Cheese gyoza was definitely the star. Like the miso soup too. Not pricey for nice Japanese food!

Had such a delicious meal here the other night ☺️ We ordered so many Japanese dishes we were so full by the end of it! We dined in one of those dining tables where we had to remove our shoes; it made it such an authentic Japanese dining experience which I really enjoyed. The dishes we had were : - Fried Kaki ( these were so crispy and delicious and the oyster was yum ), grilled corn, crispy soft shell crab salad (I really liked the spicy wasabi dressing), lotus chips ( these are so addictive and these ones were super crunchy!😍), duck and eggplant gyoza (really nice flavour combo but would’ve been better if the bottom was crispier because even though they were pan fried it didn’t really have that texture), chicken karrage, and tuna tataki 🙌🏼🙌🏼 - I Love that Most dishes range from $6.80 -$8 - so its the perfect place to go with friends as you can order heaps of different dishes to try 🥰 -

Great food and ambience. Came with two under 5 children and we sat at the traditional Japanese room. Very comfy and spacious for the kids. Highlights were the chicken karrage & lotus root chips . Very crunchy and not oily. The coatings were not too thick. The Takoyaki, tamagoyaki, udon and gyoza were also very nice. Service was also great and efficient. Time taken from order to table was less than 15 mins. Very recommended.

I am really like this style of izakaya Japanese restaurant and I think gyoza gyoza restaurant is still be my favourite restaurant . Me and my friend we planned to have our dinner there and we really love the foods. We ordered fried rice,chicken karage , deep fried octopus and their signature gyoza (pork and garlic) and I think if you want to come you definitely should order their grill KARUBI. The food are fantastic and the price are cheap as well because all the food started from $ 6.80 to $8 . The service is great. The waitress she is so friendly and full of smile. Her name is kanako. What a great dining experience . For sure I will come back again.

Dined for early dinner before seeing comedy festival shows. Been to gyoza gyoza chain before & this is the same. Majority of japanese tapas dishes are $6.80 each & more premium dishes are $8 each. We ordered the pan fried garlic & pork gyoza, chicken ribs, lamb ribs, chicken yakitori, okra tempura & ebi (prawn) tempura. All the dishes were tasty. Service friendly but at times a little slow & inattentive. In the entertainment book so we got a good discount off total bill.

Gyoza Douraku is as close to a Japanese Izakaya as I’ve experienced outside of Nippon, the food is of very good quality and portion sizes quite generous for the modest tariff. They also have a good range of Japanese beer & sake but very few Japanese whiskies which was the only disappointing part for me, otherwise it would have a 5 rating. Overall, GD comes highly recommended for those gaijin looking for an authentic, affordable Nippon experience without the long plane trip...

I’ve been wanting to visit this place for forever. I’ve always walked past it on the way to the 96 tram stop which is basically outside the door. So I was excited when I recieved an invitation to check out their menu. Yay!!. Gyoza Douraku is a classic Japanese izakaya-style eatery. The menu is built around the idea of tapas to enjoy with their massive drinks list. The majority of the tapas are priced at $6.80, which makes it easy to try a heap of different dishes affordably.

The restaurant's ambience is quite appealing. The lighting is good though the restaurant could do with more seating inside, although there was ample seating outside. The staff were very friendly and hospitable. However on a busy day like Friday the service can be slow. The food was very tasty and reasonably portioned. My partner and I ordered the 2 dish set menu which gave us miso soup, wafu salad, rice, soba noodles, sweet and sour pork, agedashi tofu, ika salad with crispy fried calamari and karaage chicken.The highlight dish was the chicken which had perfectly crispy batter. Overall the Japanese flavours were all as what should be expected. I will definitely recommend this restaurant and will be coming back to try the other dishes. As the name of the establishment suggests gyoza is the signature dish so I might be trying that next time. Also forgot to mention the restaurant was giving a complimentary Japanese parfait dessert in return for a customer review which was absolutely delicious!

Always love the idea of Japanese Tapas.. this Japanese joint was located along Bourke street.. had an amazing dinner of Japanese tapas.. we have been here a few times now and it hasn’t disappointed so far.. decent prices and good selection of tapas.. probably not the best Japanese food but for the price and ambience it was definitely worth it.. one thing that was the matcha beer wasn’t what we expected, suggest that stick with normal beer :)

What a delicious dining experience we enjoyed in the heart of the city. Gyoza Douraku offers a great setting, lots of natural light and even an outdoor area. Close to the tram stop with everything close by, they served some seriously good food. The menu is massive with something for everyone. I loved the crispy school prawns with wasabi mayo and the takoyaki was seriously some of the best I’ve ever had! I also believe this is the best Japanese food I’ve had since moving to Melbourne!

The worst service ever. We got into the restaurant during lunch time and waited at least 30 mins and no one even cared to come and take our order. When we asked one of the waiters if we can order, he showed an angry face as if we owe him money and said “just wait” this is after at least 20 mins after we sat down. My gf then walked to the front desk and tried to talk to the waitress to ask if we can order. My gf takes to her and she didn’t even bother to look up and did not respond at all. This is straight up rude! We have been to many gyoza places this is by far the worst. If you want to be treated liked garbage just come to this place and you won’t be disappointed!

Service was attentive. However, the food was very average. We had a wide range of food: gyozas, sashimi, soba, udon, yakitori and chicken kaarage. Nothing really stood out. We decided to try this place based on a recommendation of a colleague was gave a good account of the food here. We found authentic Japanese tapas with a huge selection of tapas and drinks ranging from Japanese to local favourites. The food is pretty authentic taste wise and the staff is very attentive. The overall ambience is pretty cosy although a little tight closely reflecting a tapas bar in Japan. We did not have to wait long for our food to arrive. Our favourites were the okonomiyaki and signature Chef’s Special gyoza. It was overall a pleasant experience and we will definitely be back to try other items on the menu.

Gyoza Douraku is one of a plethora of similar restaurants in this part of town but stands out with its warm, inviting interior and attentive and prompt service. Japanese food is served tapas-style with almost all dishes at $6.80. A huge menu covers most options and a wide range of drinks are also on offer. We tried the Yakitori chicken skewers, pan fried pork and garlic dumplings, pan fried prawn dumplings, crab claws, cauliflower karaage and popcorn chicken. All of the dishes were fresh and very tasty. We would gladly return to try more of the options available.

A really nice place to visit! I just wandering around in the city after having my main meal and looking for a place to stop by and have kind of snack before getting back home in the Christmas’s eve day. Finally, I have found this cozy and friendly Japanese restaurant & bar with gyoza plate. After reviewing the menu in the front of the restaurant, I have found out that the their menu just started from 6.8$ and the price is quite reasonable, so I went straight in lol You can sit in the bar ( in the front, or on the side if you are here all alone like me), and there also have the table for many peeps if you come together with your friend or colleagues. In my opinion, this place is more suitable with friends and colleague than the family. A good place for chit chatting and grabbing some drinks and snack. I try the gyoza one with the special recipe from chef and the gyoza sauce can combine with the fresh chopped garlic, sesame, the chili with oil paste, and Japanese sour sauce one (up to your choice). Overall is great, and I think I will visit here again with my friends.

Light is not very bright, feels really relaxed. It’s a good place for friends dinning out. It is not first one I come, provided me a very good dinning experience at a such beautiful night before Christmas. Staff is very friendly provided a really professional and helpful services. Dish’s tastes as usual, delicious and beautiful. The take Wasabi is the best one I have eat in Melbourne. Oyster with Yuzu dressings is bloody special! That’s my favorite, every time I come there I will order this, can’t believe I can eat such good oyster with yuzu dressing in Melbourne. There are many drinks you can choose, this time we order tropical hot tea, it’s so warm. In a word, it is the best Japanese cafe I have been. Gyoza Douraku is a nice little place that serves Japanese food tapas style. It is competitively priced and the dark wooden interior is quite conducive for get togethers. We accepted Gyoza Douraku's kind invitation to sample some of their wares. There was a surprisingly busy lunchtime crowd mid week when we entered the premises. Staff were run off their feet and there was a sense of chaos. Among some of the dishes we ordered: 1. Lotus chips - these were chewy 2. Soft shell crab mini burger - the buns were super dry but the burgers looked pretty as a pair 3.Pork and garlic gyoza - these were tasty and delectable 4. Wasabi chicken salad - by far, my favourite dish of the day. Loved the wasabi sauce and the chicken was cooked perfectly. 5. Wafu steak - it was done medium rare (looked perfect!) but was chewy 6. Okonomiyaki - this was beautifully prepared and we were very happy with this dish 7. Kinoko tofu - the accompanying sauce was fantastic and lifted the tofu to another level. So our overall experience was a bit like a roller coaster. We love the concept of Japanese tapas and with some tweaking, Gyoza Douraku has great potential to be awesome.

We came into Gyoza Douraku the other night – a Japanese tapas restaurant where majority of the menu is only $6.80! The menu is very extensive so you can definitely find a lot of menu items that are well and truly a bang for your buck! We ordered the following Gyoza in soup , fried and boiled – we ordered the eggplant and duck, garlic and pork and also cabbage and pork dumplings, each had their distinct flavour and we melt the fried ones were our favourite. The miso soup in the gyoza broth was also quite enjoyable but too much of it went inside the gyoza itself and it expanded the dumpling and made it fall apart Salmon tartare- this was creamy and very fresh we loved the yuzu mayo which added the tartness this dish needed The beef tartare with quail egg yolk- we loved this dish , I found the beef a tad too sweet however the creamy yolk balanced it out Foiled mixed mushrooms – yum! Wagyu steak – cooked on a hot stone and surprisingly still tender and medium rare after leaving it on for awhile Cucumber in sesame sauce- makes eating vegetables very enjoyable Matcha and roasted tea mixed swirl – we loved the roasted tea matcha ice cream the most. All in all a very delicious place that is great for picky eaters and those whole love variety and sharing food, Very great value for money ! Thanks so much for having us

If I was sum up my experience of Gyoza Douraku, it would be comparing it to Daiso (I love Daiso by the way). Everything (most things) are the same price ($6.80 per plate), therefore some things are great value, sound value and lesser value, so choose wisely! We were invited to try six plates, a drink and a dessert to share. We chose correctly! We enjoyed the gyoza in both forms, both pan fried and in a soup. The baked scallops were my personal favourite. The yukke (julienne raw beef with raw quail egg) is a take on steak tartare and was delicious (but not for everyone's taste). We also enjoyed the foiled baked japanese mushrooms in ponzu butter. The green tea and strawberry layered parfait was fun and a nice way to end the meal. Cocktails were extremely fun and delightful. It's a great japanese bar, cosy interior, well decorated and decked out, and had a great vibe. It seems to attract passers by which means it's doing the right things to bring people through the door. Service was friendly and responsive. Eager to please, and quick on the ball. I also liked that they put the expected wait times on dishes, so you know what you're getting yourself into. Overall, a fun take on Japanese tapas style dishes, at a decent price, in a fun hip spot. Tip: the spicy miso broth with the gyoza packed some heat, but it was delicious regardless.

TL:DR - A casual Japanese izakaya pub with refreshing Japanese beer on tap and snacking, tapas-style plates on offer. The atmosphere of the izakaya feels very comfortable. It's a place you sit around and chat with friends, have some drinks and accompanying snacks. At $6.80 per plate, there's a huge range, but choose dishes which are hard to mess up, or is worth the value. * Matcha Beer - matcha powder whisked into Asahi draught. Only for serious matcha lovers. It's a confusing drink, as you'd relate beer with thirst quenching gulps, and matcha with soothing sips. There's still a bit of effervescence and head on the beer, and the matcha gives it a light earthy bitterness. It's a very novelty drink. * Yukke - Decent serving of raw beef and well seasoned with sesame oil, a bit of soy and chilli. Nice texture of the beef and the quail egg made it a little more luxurious. Great dish. * Tuna Tataki - nicely seared on the edges and still raw in the middle. The seaweed salad has good texture and dressing, but if you have it together with the tuna, the seaweed can be overpowering. Not bad if you have it separately though. * Yakitori with truffle salt - Weirdly, the yakitori was barely room temperature. Also barely any char marks on the chicken. Very light flavouring of truffle, and the chicken was a little dry. * Gyoza Soup - Spicy miso soup had good flavour and was quite spicy actually, almost choked while sucking up the soft gyoza skin. * Lamb Ribs - Extemely dry and tough meat. It's like they roasted the ribs to oblivion and finished it off in a light crispy batter and deep fried. * Wafu steak - Very tough and chewy piece of steak grilled medium and served on wafu sauce. By the time you cut up the steak, it's dressed itself in loads of the wafu sauce, which can be overpowering with soy & garlic flavours. * Grilled corn - Hard to mess up, the grilled corn arrived last and was hot and fresh. Juicy sweet pops of corn on each bite aided by a light, sticky teriyaki kind of glaze. * Chocolate, cookies & cream parfait - I didn't get the "chocolate, cookies & cream" flavour of the parfait. It was loaded with lightly salted puffed rice, biscuits and houjicha/matcha soft serve. Maybe a bit of chocolate mousse as well but it was hard to tell. That being said, as a parfait for dessert, it was a decent finish to dinner. Service improvements opportunities: - Good to see the izakaya busy, but when I arrived for my 7:30pm booking, there was no table available and was asked to wait. I suggested the window bench which I didn't mind because it felt like my own private booth. It's a basic 101 though: if there's a booking, have the table ready. - There were 4 staff on the floor but it took quite a while for someone to come around and take our order. - Again, I know it was a busy period, but the food really did take a long time to come out. Even the drinks took a while to be poured and served. Thanks to Gyoza Douraku for the invitation!

Good Food Good Mood

I was invited to Gyoza Douraku last night and the place was absolutely packed. Definitely a good sign, particularly on a Monday however we were only allowed six dishes plus a shared dessert which definitely isn’t enough for two people. I think you would need at the very least eight dishes of this tapas style food which still keeps it somewhat within the bounds of reasonable pricing. We enjoyed our cocktails although we couldn’t really taste much alcohol. We started with salmon sashimi, okonomiyaki and yakitori. The skewers were small but flavoursome. The pancake was relatively doughy but still enjoyable to eat. The wafu steak was our next dish which was quite a good choice as was the yummy miso eggplant. The gyoza though was disappointing, particularly since the restaurant is named for gyoza you would kind of expect that to be the star of the show but the filling didn’t have much prawn and it was all a bit lacklustre. Overall tasty enough, the small portion size means you can try lots of different things off the extensive menu (just not with a 6 dish limit). The dessert didn’t do it for me purely because I’m not a matcha fan and that’s kind of the only option available albeit in various different forms but no doubt green tea lovers will love it

3.5 A cute Japanese eatery in the heart of the city. They serve Japanese style “tapas” so you get smaller portions of the classics. The chicken yakitori and the wafu steak were my favourites, with the tasty sauces adding to the appeal of the dishes. The Japanese pancake was also another highlight, light and fluffy. The prawn gyoza were nice, but the prawn was a little light on and were really like vegetarian gyoza. Still a nice flavour. A good way to dine if you want to try a lot of different dishes.

It’s a 4.2 for us. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal and hospitality here. This is an Izakaya style bar. It serves a range of fresh dumplings and small bar dishes. It’s a very good fun style of eating. Casual and very enjoyable. All the dishes are a good price and there’s an impressive range. 6-8 dishes will do it for you unless you’re seriously ravenous. We received a lovely greeting at the door. There was a good crowd in on a Monday. Spring is here and the city is beginning to wake after the long winter. The manager Hong recommended our dishes and a fantastic selection they were too. The special traditional pan fried pork and garlic gyoza are beautifully made gyoza. They were really lovely. The soft shell crab mini burger is a mighty dish too, one of the most popular we were advised and it was easy to see why. The salmon sashimi is a great dish. It’s really good quality salmon which is nicely cut and presented. Curiously, the salmon tataki was the least impressive dish for me. The Kinoko Hoiru/Yaki, foil baked mixed mushrooms, is a great selfish. These are lovely delicate mushrooms that are very nicely cooked and presented. Similarly, the crab cream croquette is an enticing dish that’s beautiful and creamy as promised. The wagyu steak dish is a cracker. I was critical a couple of weeks ago of a Japanese restaurant further up Bourke Street because of tough wagyu. The wagyu here was the complete opposite. It was superbly cooked lovely steak and in a very nice sauce. A terrific dish. Our last savory dish was Yakitori. This is a beauty too. It’s very tender moist chicken with a lovely BBQ flavour. After a good break we finished with very nice soft serve ice cream, green tea and roasted tea. This was a lovely clean fresh way to finish the night. We loved our night here. The only slight downer were the seriously noisy people in the neighboring booth. Such is life. The food and atmosphere was great. Our thanks for the invitation to dine here especially Hong the manager for taking such great care of us.

Split The Bill

Gyoza Douraku is located right in the heart of the city. A classic Japanese style bar serving an amazing variety of dishes and they've kept it simple as all the dishes are the same price! We ordered a lot (maybe too many!) of dishes to share, but our favourites were the oyster with ponzu sauce and the deep fried octopus. All the dishes were bursting with flavour and their signature gyoza’s are also a must! Would definitely recommend to anyone who’s looking for the perfect place for after-work drinks as they also had is huge variety of beers, sakes and shochu. The owners were very generous and we will certainly be back. Thanks for the invite.

Have stopped by here for lunch twice now and both times I left happy and full. Ordered two lunch meals and chose salmon sashimi, tomago yaki, teriyaki chicken and sweet chili karaage as well as some gyoza. Everything was really delicious and fair in its serving. All the food came out together and with the addition of miso, soba and salad from the set menu both myself and partner were well fed and very happy. For me the salmon was a stand out as it was soft and fresh, just melting when you ate it. My partner loved the karaage with sweet chili sauce and sprinkled with crushed peanuts. The food is not only tasty but really affordable and will definitely be back again soon.

This is a perfect place for single dining out!! Most of the dishes are prepared in small dishes and an accordingly cheaper price. The food shown in the photo are Iced Hojicha with soft mixed serve, tuna tataki, and gyoza spicy miso soup. The honjicha soft serve reminds me of those I ate in Japan. Good experience. Not too crowded either.

It took me a while to review this place only because of the vast dishes we sampled that afternoon. Booked a table for 3 on 12/6 and were seated at a horigotatsu (hope I’m not mistaken with the term) booth enough to fit 6 people max (we didn’t request for it). At first we felt bad for occupying so much space but as the dishes we ordered arrived, we were glad to be given that amount of table space. We “started” with: 2x gyutan no shio yaki (ox tongue): plain, but not too bad w the dipping salt on the side. If you don’t eat it quick enough, it gets over cooked from the hotplate that it’s served on. 2x stir fry spicy pork belly: marinade/sauce was nice and I enjoyed it, although the pork belly was bordering on dry, but maybe because of the hot plate it was served on. 1x salmon belly: seasoned well and melt in your mouth deliciousness. 3x gyozas: we sampled a 3 serve of variety. Not too bad. 2x tuna tataki: this was a divided opinion. I didn’t enjoy it because of the dressing which seemed to be overpowered by junipers (a reminiscence of gin). However my other two lunch partners in crime loved it. 2x oysters with ponzu sauce: heaven! Creamy fresh oysters accompanied by a well balanced dressing 2x grill karubi: these beef ribs were really good! 1x deep fried octopus tentacles: these were great too! Although my other two lunch mates said it was good but nothing out of the ordinary, comparing it to some other places that serves it. 1x sesame kyutri: this simple cucumber salad with sesame dressing was just what I needed to balance my meal, yet I was laughed at by my carnivorous partners in lunch. However, they dug into too. Along with all these, we also ordered fried rice (per person and must have, in my opinion to go with all these tapas dishes) and it went so well together. Having big bellies and not full yet, we finished with: Okonomiyaki: awesome! Tako wasabi: nice. Be prepared for the wasabi kick though. Yukke: shame the raw beef was really fresh, although overpowered by the sweet dressing. Less would’ve been just perfect. Our only ever so small let down, was that they were out of tapped beers that day (hence not being able to try their matcha beer and jap stout beer). Ordered Asahi by the bottle, only to be told that it wasn’t available too. All in all, we will come back for another visit as there are so much more to sample from the menu. Service was polite, although it can get a little awkward at times having to stick your head out of the booth (if you get seated in the horigotatsu booth) to get the staff’s attention.

Love this entire chain and love it even more that its on entertainment book but this location was a bit of a let down. had lunch wrih a gf at 1pm and she was worried we wouldn't have time to eat aa it gets quite busy. lucky we got a seat instantly however true enough it took 35-40mins for us to eat all our meals. We both got the lunch specials with choice of 2 dishes, salad sides, miso and rice or soba. I got the rice, miso and salad within 5min. this was delicious. fresh with mayo and balsamic. Then the tough part it took 20min later before I got my tofu which was flavoursome and generous. I got 3 pieces. then the Teriyaki chicken came out about 10min after that. This was moist and generous also but hard to appreciate when my lunch hour was up and had to hurry and eat iy to return to work. service itself was friendly.

I was in the city and was extremely hungry, I have been absolutely froffing some yakitori and this place seemed to have it (not a lot of places in Melbourne do). I ordered gyoza, croquettes (couple kinds), okonomiyaki, yakitori, takoyaki and edamame. I honestly thought the food was great and really felt like a street food place in Japan. Super lovely staff - really drunk guy verbally assulted my friend and I at an outdoor table and the staff handled it really sweetly - manager came over and apologized (even though totally not her fault) and gave us all of our food again (drunk guy upended the table while we were sat there!), and were just super nice about the whole exchange. I’ve been to 3 other goyza goyza stores, the original on little Bourke, Westfield Doncaster and the new one in Emporium. Goyza goyza are well known for their cheap and large variety of Japanese tapas. I was very disappointed today, compared to my experiences at other stores the food standards ain’t as high (probably due to low turnovers). -I had a bad oyster of 3 and the other 2 ain’t fresh compared to what you get at other stores -Steak was tasteless and over cooked -My salad was tasteless (the meat wasn’t even marinated or seasoned like other stores) -the greens in my salad were so dehydrated and aged I dont know how they can use it for my salad (it was floppy and reddish/ brown) Definitely wont be coming back to store again, you will get better quality if you walk for few minutes and head to the one on little bourke.

So i think my partner and i found the best Japanese Tapas style food in Australia! This place was amazing!!! Even though its a small place the food is awesome! We went there on friday night and i think we had everything or their menu because we just didnt know what to order! (2019) Most items $6.8, so depending on how hungry you are order two, or three, or more, but definitely get 1L of beer to go with it Matcha beer, $18 1L, pretty tasty. -- (2018) Extensive menu of Japanese small bites, and large drinks menu with lots of beverages available on jugs. Can easily be well fed and plenty of drinks for $30-40pp. Recommend the raw tuna slices. Service can be a bit and miss so have to be patient with that.

Came here at 4pm for a late lunch/early dinner as a group of 3. The restaurant was quite empty and we were seated immediately. We ordered around 13 dishes between the 3 of us, which wasn’t quite enough as we were all still hungry after! Should keep in mind that portions are very very small! All the food was decent - not amazing, but not bad either. The ones we enjoyed most were the soft shell crab mini burger, wagyu beef gyoza in spicy miso soup, chicken ribs, and the tuna tataki. During our visit, the staff weren’t very attentive, and we had to get our water and our soy sauce plate ourselves from the counter. Food came quite slowly - many dishes would arrive all at once, but then there would be a long break in between before the next dishes arrived. A cheap place for some japas izakaya-style. They also have an extensive sake menu, which would be great for group parties!

Walk along bourke street and attracted by this cute japanese decoration small shop. Wanna treat myself with some little tapas and a sweet sake for my Saturday night. The shop manager is so friendly. He advised me a lovely peach flavour sake since I have no idea on it. And it was so good. The food are all $6.8 per dish. I have stayed Australia for 1 year. I miss Japanese food a lot. This time I came this shop and had a dinner. I enjoyed delicious Japanese dishes and Sake. Especially I like stir spicy pork belly and Tori no karaage mustered miso and deep fried octopus tentacle. Definitely I’ll back here.

Came here with 2 friends tonight and had a really great meal. Lovely and polite staffs. Nice deco and environment. So many choices on food. Really a lot. Even dumplings they can do in steam, pan-fried and in soup. We tried the pan-fried chicken dumpling. Good bite size and juicy. You can creat your own gyoza sauce. It's a sweet and fun idea. They also provide private room for big party. I will definitely come back again to try other food. This is a good place for few friends to share some tapas and drinks.

The food was overall quite tasty although a little slow on coming out. I had Tuna Tataki, Salmon Tartare, Lotus Chips, pork and beef gyoza. Out of them the salmon was a standout and I would trying that recommend that. The gyoza were good quality and tasty. The restaurant had a good friendly atmosphere to it. Staff aeemed distance but that could also be to do with it seemed quite busy. There wasnt much seating so if there is more than 2 of you I would definately book.

Mustard

Not the best of spots to have lunch outside, the ground is slanted and you can get "all sorts of life" walking by you while you eat. We opted for their lunch special which included your choice of Japas and a variety of other side dishes to make the meal complete. I leaned towards a couple of safe options, the pan-fried miso eggplant and duck gyoza was lightly fried on the bottom and went well with my customised dipping sauce. As for the filling it was difficult to recognise any of the ingredients and just tasted like pork mince. Easily wolfed down as they are quite petite. I also got some salmon sashimi (they ran out of fried salmon belly) which came in thick cuts and tasted fresh. The portioning on some of the other dishes my colleagues got were significantly larger than my Japas. The side dishes were all good but I won't dabble into them. Keen to try their other affiliated restaurants Gyoza Gyoza.

Awesome list of drinks (sake, shochu etc.) and great selection foods. Gyozas are really tasty and the variety of food is very good. Highly recommended.

Wonderful place for a drink and tapas with friends or loved ones. Loved the small dishes all at a flat rate. The menu is quite extensive and we loved everything we tried (beef tataki salad, salmon tataki salad, and karage chicken with mustard miso). Service is fast and staff very friendly. Prices are reasonable and aligned to food quality and quality. I have short listed this place as one of my favorites now and I'm definitely coming back.

Had this restaurant on our list to try for a long time. I usually don't write negative reviews, but the terrible food I had here has pushed me to warn others about this place. We ordered 7 dishes, totalling more than $50. Many buzz words on the menu like "truffle" and "miso" made everything look so appealing. The beef tataki was probably the most saddest beef tataki I've ever had. 4 slivers of beef, barely larger than the size of my pinkie finger. It was nothing like the picture shown, and this place had the audacity to charge almost $7 for it. The karaage chicken was predominantly batter and dry, one of the worst I've had. It hurt the inside of my mouth to chew it because the batter was so hard. The tomago was clearly not fresh, very soggy so it would've been sitting in the fridge for several hours. For a place that prides itself on expensive Japanese tapas, you'd think they'd put in a bit more effort. The service is good, however the waiter noted down a dish that was completely wrong and charged us for it. It was a vegetable dish that wasn't even on a page we ordered other food from so I'm not even sure how that was possible. The only thing I'd come back for is the hojicha ice cream. That was quite well done. If you're looking for dinner, I'd give this place a complete miss.

Really bad experience ruining my day of waiting instead of eating here. The staff made me wait for 15min then rudely put me beside a small bar table for dinner, even if I have BOOKed FOR A TABLE a day before on Zomato!! Don't even know what the heck does the booking system mean to them, and I just refuse to come here anymore.

Some really tasty tapas style dishes at very reasonable prices. Love the Japanese booths for groups upstairs. The lunch deal is great value with Miso soup, an appetizer, a salad, rice and 1 main dish for $11.90 our 2 main dishes for $15.90. Friendly service and decent food came out quickly today, unlike last time where we had very chaotic and slow service,, with some in our group not getting their food and rice arriving after we've already concluded the meal. The vegetarians in our group could taste meat in their dishes. If going in a group next time, I would pre-order to avoid the long wait.
