We went to The General Assembly from Mildura for NYE on a whim. We had the best time! Being vegetarians we didn’t expect much of a food option but the young lady serving food realised we were vegetarian and specially brought us the plates that were vegetarian first. A fantastic night! Great service. Thank you!
A great place for a couple of drinks and a relaxing afternoon/evening with live acoustic music - cold beer, great wine & fun staff - we had a great time and will definitely be back with friends!
The service was fantastic. Plus when the beer we wanted was not pulling properly, the head beer manager came and helped us to get things going again. Everyone was polite. Especially the cute guy at the door. LOL.
The staff are the best. We shared 5 entrees and all were delish. The desserts were also shared. Great place to eat after visiting the DFOs. Great band on a Saturday night.
Terrific place to drop in and have endless beers and amazing food in South Wharf.
Love it, good beer, good tunes and great views..... food was sooo good too. Cheers guys
What a fabulous atmosphere great service highly recommend
It was absolutely fabulous. The salmon was fantastic. The service was great A.ways a great place to eat there
Good food, great venue, loved the live music

There are quite a few places to choose from around the General Assembly and we chose this place because there was some industrial works across the water that was way too noisy to sit outside.
We chose as assembly platter which was a great filling snack for two. Cauliflower, cured meats, cheese, hummus, bread and more. Delicious. All washed down with a glass of wine. Nice way to have a business meeting.
Staff were great and offered food service.
Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Dietaries catered for.

Only came here for drinks after a days shopping at the DFO south wharf. Ordered the lemon lime bitters and a friend ordered a beer. Atmosphere was great and enjoyable.
The place looked like a shed outside but the interior is very nicely decorated and looked really nice. There's a bar area and also tables for food .
Met a friend for dinner here, and found it to be the perfect place for a catch up. Being a lovely day we opted to sit outside and enjoy watching the sunset and feeling the breeze, and found it to be a nice atmosphere.
We started off with a plate of the eggplant chips, which were seasoned well and a great appetiser. For mains I ordered the mushroom burger with crispy bacon, while my friend had their porterhouse steak. The food was great, and made with delectable fresh ingredients. The steak was cooked well and the accompaniment of sides complemented it perfectly. The burger was brimming with flavour and so packed with ingredients I initially had a hard time biting into it (even after squishing it down). The fries were crunchy and well seasoned.
We also ordered the croquettes as a side and they were delicious; oh-so crunchy on the outside and oh-so soft on the inside.
For dessert we decided on the 3-way cooked mango, which turned out to be a great refreshing way to finish off the meal. The 3 different textures and flavours of mango were fun to experience.
Staff were relatively attentive throughout the night, though we found our dessert took an extremely long time to come out (pretty sure it had been forgotten). For drinks my friend made her way through a couple of different wines, which she said were surprisingly good. I stuck to mocktails on the other hand due to an early start the next day, and found them refreshing, fruity and a great accompaniment to all the food we had.
The GA was an awesome place to hang out on a Sunday arvo.. they had a live band going and with the great sunny weather outside a couple of beers kept us happy..
This place had a good selection of drinks and the venue was huge.. A good place to visit for a quick beve..
Good vibes, live music. A chilled placed to enjoy good food and drinks. The lamb racks and twiced cooked pork belly had some great flavours. Though portions are small, definitely recommend for the quality.
The great thing about TGA is, they are that big that have tables all the time available. Great selection of small dishes and bears. My favourite is charred greens and pork belly.
Stopped by last weekend for an early drink and a bit to eat and was very impressed! Service was friendly and efficient and the food was great too. We shared the Croquettes and the steak sandwich which were both excellent.
There was an acoustic band playing that was very good and not too loud. It was a lovely evening!
A lovely place with a view of the Yarra River, just at the doorstep of the Melbourne Convention Center and the South Wharf DFO. We had the Seafood Platter (For sharing) and Hummus Dip with crisp bread. The platter was excellent. Could taste the freshness of the huge prawns. Oysters were fresh though a bit on the small side. Hummus dip was also delicious. When we were there, it was a bit busy and the wait staff was a bit hassled so don’t expect too much on service. There was an extremely long wait for the food - it was a weekend, so though food is good...do not go there hungry especially if it’s a busy weekend with lovely weather as a lot of diners are enjoying the view. Price wise...for portions served, I do find it a bit on the expensive side but good thing, food was good!
We were lucky enough to attend the house warming of the general assembly and what a fabulous night it was. The venue itself is right by the riverside which offers the most spectacular view if your sitting outside, inside it is very spacious with a bar right in the middle. Throughout the night there was a delicious antipasto spread and mouth watering canapes. We really enjoyed the sausage rolls ( vegetarian and chicken) as well as the popcorn chicken . Although it was a busy night, staff were professional and friendly, the vibes were great especially during the later part of the night when most of us has had a few
Thanks so much for having us
It's a casual place with good food. I especially like their side dishes like the eggplant chips, mushrooms and cauliflower. Saturday night had live music (a guy singing with guitar) that adds to the atmosphere without being too loud. Only wish the salad dressing on the iceberg wedge was not that strong/sour.
On Saturday 20 – Sunday 21 January, The General Assembly will be celebrating the exquisite produce that comes from the Yarra Valley region by bringing it to our own backyard with their Yarra Valley by the Yarra weekend.
We dropped in for lunch and opted to eat at the bar rather than restaurant so no table service. I had two small plates, Calimari with fennel, orange, rocket and eggplant fries with blue cheese & honey. My partner had a steak served with fries and wedge of iceberg. Both our meals were delicious and I definitely recommend the eggplant chips they were delicious. Not overpriced. Would definitely go back! Plenty of drink options too & can look over the water.
The Dear Luncher does Xmas parties like a boss. The mob at The General Assembly do them reasonably well too. Not a bad location on the edge of the Yarra, and even though Matilda Bay have a heavy influence over the tap beers, there's some actually some decent beers available too (read: not Matildas).
The Dear Luncher gorged on two courses at this venue and enjoyed the main much more than the entree. The entree was a pork belly dish, it came with an apple puree that tasted a bit like baby food. The pork bits were underwhelming. Pork giblets. But this is where the disappointment ended The main, a beef brisket, was outstanding. Crispy on the exterior but pull apart soft everywhere else.
This isn't a bad venue for functions at all, ladies and gents. South Wharf might indeed be a bit of a dead zone but General Assembly does all-right. Wouldn't come back voluntarily to be sure, but if you're having to go here, expect a decent return on your goddamn investment Lunchers.
Not bad, good flavours and fair price, good cold beers on tap and friendly service.the calamari entree was good, the steak frites also good, the white mousse, strawberry and macaron dessert was really fresh and had good flavours.
Really enjoyed the food and ambience of this venue. Fantastic place to have a casual catch up with friends. Room for improvement with their music choice 😎

I have been here a few times for drinks and nibbles after work. Good place to chill out by the water. I have tried their beer paddles pretty decent collection of beers. Food is good but definitely not enough for the price they charge. Great customer service and certainly one of the best spots to sit by the water.
Can't really make any complaints...stopped here for coffee and cake with my sister as we've been wanting to try out these places along south wharf promenade for a while.
Coffee was good, not the best but again, nothing to complain about. The dessert was yum - a simple blend of ingredients yet it was plated nicely and tasted great.
Will be back to try out the mains:)
Next on the cocktail bar hop was The General Assembly. This has been the setting for many a work drink in the past because it has great views of the water and sizeable areas for larger groups to mingle. Tonight however, we were just after a cocktail to put us right as we progressed towards our train home.
The General Assembly has a 2 x cocktails for $20 drink special on Fridays from 5-8pm which was a great deal. We ordered the Express Martini and The Aviator cocktail (Gin, vermouth, lavender & lemon). Both were served in a scaled down version of the old fashioned Marie Antoinette champagne glass. These glasses were so small that I doubt Ms Antoinette's anatomy would have come close to fitting in the glass itself. That said the cocktails tasted absolutely delicious and for us were the standouts of the four venues we indulged in this evening. The espresso martini was lovely and silky while the Aviator left a lovely soft aromatic lavender flavour in your mouth. Both were served really cold as they should be.
We ordered hot chips here which came out super hot and well seasoned but with a minimal dash of aioli that wasn't sufficient for the quantity of chips they came with. Enjoyed our cocktail time in The General Assembly. Quality over quantity.
I've been here a couple of times midweek for the lunchtime menu and I have to say I didn't find the portions filling. I do eat more than your average person but if you are looking for a hearty generous meal I wouldn't suggest you venture here. A hugely cool vibe inside and just as good atmosphere outside given the lovely water views. One of the nicer looking 'pubs' around town and the food is good just not enough of it in my opinion
Curiosity often points me towards pathways that I may otherwise not trek on, being the unadventurous character that I am. A row of thirsty and hungry diners basked in the last rays of the summer sunlight, all sun-kissed albeit hiding behind sunnies and large brimmed hats. I now understand why people like to stroll along the South Wharf precinct on a warm summer evening - orange sunset glow, gentle breeze and the sound of seagulls squawking is reminiscence of walking along the beach, minus sand particles in between the toes.
Tired from shopping in DFO, we made a pit stop at the General Assembly. Quite a nice bar with a stunning view of Melbourne's harbour. We decided to stay indoors due to a sunny outside. We ordered a salmon, chicken and some eggplant fries. Watch out for the 'deepfriedness' of the fries; however it was extremely delicious. The chicken was good and well cooked. Salmon was heavenly albeit portion size could be improved. Overall, a great experience and one I would recommend to anyone in the neighbourhood or wanting to relax after a big day's shopping.
We went to The General Assembly for lunch yesterday.
Myself and my partner ordered mains, whilst my Mum and her partner ordered three small meals to share. I got the Lamb Rack, which was cooked really well. I really enjoyed it but felt the sauce on it was slightly too sweet and portion was a little on the small side.
My partner had the Black Angus Bavette Steak. It was a fairly large cut of steak and the chef did a great job cooking it, as it was lovely and pink inside. He said it was one of the better steaks he has had in recent times.
The smaller meals, which were the Panzanella Salad, Wood Roasted Calamari & the Twice Cooked Pork Belly were all quite very nice. Good meals if you wanted something a little lighter.
Would definitely come and have a meal again. The location is just beautiful, especially on a nice day.
Great spot near the water with city views without the city noise and crowds.
We arrived on a Wednesday evening around 7.30. It took a while to get any service. There is the option to order at the bar and grab a table or for table service (indoors and outdoors).
Drinks menu has several beers and wines by the glass and bottle. I don't remember seeing any cocktails.
Food options include salads, appetizers, large mains to share or have on your own, sides and desserts
We ordered from the "small" selection which included lamb belly, box camembert with honey and bolt bread soldiers, and calamari to share.
Food arrived quite quickly and from then on service was quite fantastic with attentive waitresses asking us if we wanted anything else and whether our food was ok.
The lamb belly is unique in that it is battered crumbed lamb (Panko) with pulled lamb inside. It comes with a sweet jelly like sauce which I didn't like.
The box camembert is basically a disc of camembert in a box with honey on top and with rock hard bread that tastes like burnt scone.
The calamari was quite bland and didn't go well with the sweet hummus like sauce.
Points for inventiveness of the dishes and service.
Negative for a sweet sauce with each dish. What about some spice or some savouriness.
This is a pub which is certainly got the Matilda Bay beers on tap, but don't be fooled.. This selection is on beer DeLuxe levels of competency. Come here for a pint during happy hour and enjoy the cool atmophere with tv sports on the wall and a plate of chicken wings with ranch dressing and some fries.
Note that chicken wings are different now and whole menu has changed? It's taken a more gastrobpub turn which seems to suit its many beers later but was out of my price point.

I lunched today at 11:30 am at the General Assembly and ordered their Crumbed Lamb Ribs (with thick mint jelly/sauce) at $16, followed by their Strawberries & Cream (with white chocolate chard, meringue & strawberry sorbet) at $13. The 3 crumbed Lamb Ribs were enjoyable but a tad dry & needed a small quantity of the mint jelly to accompany each mouthful. The dessert however was my palates "wow factor" for the day, with an absolutely beautiful mixture of strong and milder flavours. Provision of service was excellent and each of the dishes were served within 15 minutes of ordering although the restaurant was very quiet.
The Juror's Verdict: Food 3.5-4/5, Service Provision 5/5, Will I return: Yes, overall a pleasant 2 course meal at reasonable prices.

The General Assembly is a pub that serves American food. I have heard ok reviews from Pigging out around the world and others on zomato. Here I was invited by Dimmi so I did not have to pay for anything. The place is a huge one showcasing beer. They specialise in Matilda bay beers and old cans of beer. In fact they have a huge history of beers. The service was quite slow even though the place was busy. The guy that served me was attentive.
Average but value for money pub food located conveniently at South Wharf. $15 lunch deal ( beef burger, fish and chips, schnitzel to choose from) is available from 12-3pm weekday. Lovely view and friendly service. Polenta chip was little bland, a touch of rosemary or herbs will be great.
I had a great steak here on Friday night with some friends. I tried the Hanger Steak - a first for me. There was a bit more to chew, but the flavour was amazing. I will always choose flavour over tenderness; grass fed over grain fed. The idea that tenderness should be the main criteria for steak quality is baffling to me. This one was by no means tough, or poor quality. Rather, a special cut that provides a mouthful of flavour, with a little more chew.
Service was a little bit lucklustre, but not terrible. Very casual vibe. Great position by the river, with warm heaters outside on a cooler night.
My dining companions were not so taken by their steaks as I, having made more traditional choices - Porterhouse and Scotch Fillet. Prices are getting up there at $40 for basically just a steak, so you expect something pretty good. Although in this area, you can spend so much more.
Nice spot overlooking the water, I came here for a work function and it was busy with the Friday night crowd. Good atmosphere, outdoor seating to watch the world go by. Friendly staff and good selection of drinks. We had a variety of finger food, I found the polenta fries and arancini a bit bland and also thought it was a bit odd to serve ham and cheese crossaints as a evening cocktail food. Otherwise it's a decent spot for drinks. Probably wouldn't go back for a meal.

We visited for beer and beef and it was great!

And it’s totally awesome. Being the great cook she is, she now finds great joy in getting a quick shot of what she’s made in the evening, or taking snaps of our silly dog and ever unruly garden and sharing them with her 10 followers. Her captions are super cute too. . I love that now when we go out together, we’re both busy taking pictures when our meal arrives, like when I took her with me to the General Assembly in the South Wharf precinct.
Recently my good friend Nick and I had the pleasure of visiting The General Assembly for lunch. This place is conveniently located at the heart of South Wharf, with a short walking distance from Southern Cross Station. It’s a very large venue that sits up to 600 people and is perfect for special occasions and events and the plus side is they have a great view of the river and the city.
Not sure why Gasolina doesn't have it's own site, but is grouped. Had 3 sliders that was way too much for me and a lovely cool long drink which I can't remember the name of! Yes I only had one. Great bumping into a friend nearby which resulted in lunch. I love the metal sculptures.
The General Assembly South Wharf is one of those places that even we’ll admit we were sceptical about when we first heard about it by way of an invite to sample its offering. Once you do a bit of research though, you soon realise that there’s enough here to put your preconceptions to one side and at least considering what General Assembly has to offer.
We came here for after work drinks one night and it was great. We didn't get to try any food so this is a review that's based on just the drinks and the atmosphere.
If you want a bar that's happening, but not too happening ... This is it. You can still hear conversations without it being empty. And it has a good outlook of the river and provides easy viewing for sports that might be on.
It’s Saturday night and you’re looking for somewhere to go for a classy affair. You’re not after the showy 12-course degustation with pint-size portions, but rather a hearty steak and beautifully matched craft beer, or even an Australian wine. It needs to be classy though. You’re taking your special lady out and the atmosphere needs to be that perfect balance of stylish and modern, yet casual, so you don’t look like you’re trying too hard. The General Assembly in South Wharf, has you covered.

It was nice spent my sunny day with my friends here. the staff are good and friendly. The food was ok and the view is beautiful. I love to be back again. This place is recommended:)
Food too good for south wharf! Best steaks on the yarra, have been a few times now and every time my steak is cooked to perfection. My wife has had barramundi cooked on a piece of wood, which smelt great, we have never seen a dish like that before.
Unexpectedly stumbled upon this brewery-type pub, and what started as a quick drink relaxed into a long mid afternoon dunch (lunch-dinner). $15 pub favourites served fresh and quick with a smile. Only 2 criticisms...the singer-guitarist was a tad too loud for a mixed afternoon crowd (turn it up after 8pm buddy!) and wines by the glass were a tad too exxy. Otherwise fabulous.
Went there last night for my birthday after the Ballet and we had a great experience. We made a booking and they were very kind in keeping the kitchen open for us as we rushed over from the ballet at 9:25 and kitchen was closing at 9:30. Beautiful food, lovely service. Will come back one day when we are in the area.
Friendly service. We ventured out to South Wharf area for lunch & to check out a different area of Melbourne.
The General Assembly has a pub grub menu (all $15) and also another menu with more expensive dishes. I went for a duck dish and it was superb, the duck was cooked perfectly! I also shared the scallop entree and it was also delicious.
We had lovely service and felt welcome to sit and chat after lunch had finished. A waiter gave ys some free fries which were welcome after a few drinks. Thanks :)
Excellent food, cracking tunes. Was drawn in here by the excellent music - this continued all afternoon so I was happy with my choice of venue! The food was pretty much flawless I have to say which was a surprise as South Wharf can be a disappointment. I had truffled ricotta with pea salad and we shared cauliflower croquettes which were outstanding. My partner had the wagyu burger and was given a lettuce wrap in lieu of the bun. He loved it. Staff were friendly and efficient and the food came quickly. Had a really nice drop (or two) of organic sparkling, all in all a great Saturday afternoon and I'll certainly be back.
Cheeky Friday afternoon vino in the sun. Not busy for a Friday afternoon, which l loved! Sadly this is the exception to the rule.
Friday afternoon in Melbourne cbd is usually the time corporate drones take over the bars, before they head back to the suburbs. So it's always tough to find a quiet spot. On this day it was perfect.
1> Service was extremely attentive and on the ball (love it already).
2> Excellent drinks menu, fitted out well and venue by the river (which l also love).
3> The trifecta, the food was well presented and flavoursome...
My new local, that's not so local but l need the exercise.
Super service, good foor. Sitting outside on the water's edge is very pleasant in Melbourne and this end of the promenade is getting nicely atmospheric. We had GREAT service here and the special of the day was tasty too. Prices very reasonable.
Handsome bar, tasty food. Had dinner here with a friend a few weeks ago. First thing you see when you walk in is the massive bar, they've got this awesome setup where their unpasteurized Carlton is held in copper tanks above the bar and are connected to the taps directly by even more copper. There's the entire range of Matilda Bay beers on draught also. The food was cooked beautifully and we were helped out by happy staff. What I found was a downside was the lack of a cocktail menu in place, we were told it was in the making and luckily the bartender was willing and able to make us whatever. A bit of a hassle none the less!
In short, great place to have some nice food or even just to enjoy a drink or two. Pro tip: Ask for the reserve wine list!
We went here on a Friday night and had the best Pimms jug and the food was just as good! We had the grilled eggplant and truffle Mac n cheese along with a few other things to share and they were so tasty! Service and atmosphere was great - will definitely be back soon!
Loved this place!. Food was really good, better than we were expecting. Really good relaxed fun atmosphere in there. The staff were fantastic! Made us feel very welcome, they were knowledgable, attentive and happy! Such good service. We will definitely go back.
Polenta Chips - Smoked Salt ($8). Yum!
Saviours of South Wharf. While the new fitout is nice, it doesn't have the interior design gimmicks of Munich Brauhaus or Bangpop, but sweet baby jesus the food is gooood, and beer selection is also goooood.
Had two different kinds of bruschetta, the broad bean and hens egg and artichoke, as well as prawn bun (AMAZING) and scallop with curry foam. For dessert we had cheesecake (deliciously solid, no nasty lightweight gelatin scrimping here) and an amazing deconstructed breakfast dessert which had granola and granny smith sorbet.
This place is the best thing on South Wharf. Keep up the good work! Deserves well over the 70 per cent rating it's currently at. This is an 85% + place!
It’s a huge restaurant/bar capable of catering for up to 600 people with plenty of sitting and standing room available – both inside and outside – with water & cityscape views. The central feature of the fit out by their architects, Six Degrees , is their amazing bar which features 49 taps containing 12 different craft beers from the Matilda Bay Brewing Company , Peroni , & unpasteurised Carlton Draught straight from their duo copper tanks. They also offer a selection of minimal intervention wines for wine buffs. The menu has been designed by Head Chef Darren Meraldi (previously Matteo’s , Circa , Nobu , Brighton Middle Baths & Ladro ) who has taken care to create food that matches well with their beverages...
Food is okay. Not bad but nothing special. Quite typical for a western food restaurant. Ordered the medium rare steak but it came out well done. The salmon dish, the burger dish, and the pork skewer were good and I quite enjoyed it.
I’ve been to this bar/pub few times and each time I enjoyed the time. Amazing service make you go there as a regular customer. Also, beautiful and tasty dishes are fabulous. You could have a beautiful sun set view at outdoor as well. Only negative point was service charge on Saturday, Sunday which I haven’t expected it.
Thanks 😊
Really nice place to dine for dinner! Friendly staff, live music and delicious food. Would recommend the Mac and Cheese Croquettes and, the sour watermelon cocktail for those with a sweet tooth.
Very nice location on the riverside, spacious inside. Young staff offered friendly helpful service for a lunchtime trio. Enjoyable fish and chips, and pannacotta was delicious. S we were driving we didn't try the extensive drinks choice.
Awesome food. If you are in the area please try GA out. 👍👍
(We just waited for over 30mins for our food to be served, perhaps because we didn't tip?? 🤣🤣)
Chill breeze, perfectly seasoned chips and of course, mean cocktails. That's how I would summarise my many experiences at The General Assembly. This place has exceptional selections of beverages and nibbles, stunning venues and hospitable staffs. It is the perfect destination for friends and family gatherings or even simply a repose after a shopping mission around Melbourne CBD and DFO.
Really appreciated the meal, lots of tasting plates for our family of 5. The chicken wings, loaded fries & croquettes were the most popular with the fam. Relaxing vibe, good service & well priced. Spot on for a Monday lunch with so many other places closed in the area.
