We came here without reservation, after a few minutes of waiting at the entrance I walked in to see if there were staff to assist. We were eventually seated at the bar counter, pro being you can converse with the staff and a con being not as comfortable and quite loud. In the same breath, the staff were brilliant in describing the food but at times it was difficult to hear what they just explained.
As we were here for food as well as drinks we went for their drinks matched dinner which took the effort out of ordering dishes ourselves and provided some value on the bottom line. I went for their boilermaker drinks matching purely because I was intrigued by mixing whisky and beer together. I can't say I can fully appreciate the pairings but it was interesting alternating drinks with food, starting from light and refreshing to hefty and full bodied (the stout was really choccy).
We start off with a charcuterie platter consisting of a lean wagyu bresaola drowned in red wine, pork neck (same preparation) and some wild boar salami. The bresaola didn't tickle me that much as I prefer more fat content on my cured meats. The platter came with the accompaniments of bread, pickles and jam.
In between courses we were given some tuna tartare which after a few bites thought it was over-seasoned, salty and too much wasabi/horseradish.
Mains were simple, basic technique and execution. Our grass fed porterhouse steak was cooked well and served up with sauteed mushrooms and cafe de Paris butter. Pink and fatty, a decent steak. The crispy skin pork belly was soft and the skin snappy. All of this was accompanied with mashed potatoes in gravy and some chive butter as well as root vegetable remoulade which I didn't think much of, rather bland.
Lastly was the cheese platter which consisted of delice des cremiers, bay of fires cheddar and a Roquefort blue. The soft cheese was a definite winner and silky in texture, the blue was very potent and paired well with the apple slices (more needed).
For drinks, cured meats and cheese this place has you covered with their impressive selection and knowledgeable staff to assist you. In relation to the main food, although it isn't all bad it's not a spot I'd go back as a dining destination. Seeing as it is affiliated with Mjolner and Eau de Vie (which we've been to) we expected more creativity in this department.

We have recently found out they do cheap oysters every Wednesday and it's made Humpday 110% more amazing! The oysters are great, they have vinegarette, add a glass of red to that combo and this place is my favourite on Wednesdays!
Fantastic venue with a bustling atmosphere that’s exciting yet intimate. Amazing selection of drinks are available in particular for those wanting to sample a whisky (or two!)
Checked in for a nightcap with friends and shared the poutine which was delicious, the fries were soft and crunchy drizzled with a generous amount of curds, gravy and bonus bacon. Would definitely come back for dinner, and the venue offers a 3 course meal with matched drinks for only$75pp which I’ve heard is well worth the value.

Boilermaker is known for having IPA/beer after a whisky shot but the cocktail that I had had a mix of whisky and IPA and let me tell you I wasn’t okay with the idea at first. As soon as I tried it - I almost couldn’t put my drink down - it was delicious and tasted fruity and everything I wanted in a drink.
🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: it is always packed so definitely go at a non peak time. It’s also very loud in there when it’s full house so bring along your loudest outer voice.

Nice relaxed bar that stocks heaps and i mean heaps of spirits and beers. Will be spoilt for choices. Unfortunately, they ran out of Hendricks when we were last there. Settled down with Domestica and Laphroiag. The double IPA is awesomeeee!!!

Exceptional service. Went here for some drinks with work fiends and from the moment I made my reservations, they were polite, professional and even apologised to me when I was informed that some dietary requirements couldn't be met, which I respected.
Ups: vast variety of wines, craft beers, scotched and wisky flavours, a vibrant atmosphere and rather affordable prices
Downs: only one I can think of, was not enough dinner options
Overall, I highly recommend this establishment to anyone going for something specially in the area of drinks or wanting to dip your adventurous pallet into something new.

My bf loves beer so I decided to give this a try. Friendly and professional service. It’s very spacious inside. You can have your own booth or huge table if you go with a big group or sit in a more intimate area for two or sit at the bar. We had the craft beer paddle. It was confusing from the start because no one explains what in the paddle and we kinda assumed that we can choose what we want from tap selection but it turned out they already have their own list of beer for the paddle.
I’ve had a good time here. I love the dark ale and the draught. This place is a bit on the expensive side and I felt a bit awkward and overwhelming with the interior design.

We all somehow ordered lamb shanks, and while ok, to be honest left me thinking the reputation must have been built on the whisky range and the whisky/beer pairing offerings. Spent $263, tried a few nice beers.

Friendly staff who were happy to help with deciding what to order. Even the staff members who were not directly serving us would smile/welcome us. There’s a good selection of cocktails that are split up into sections that can help with choosing what to order (eg fruity, herbaceous, boozy etc)
We had the “boilermaker sour” and “results may vary” and both were great. Cutely garnished as well if you want nice photos. We sat outside and and there was someone who always cleared empty glasses which is nice to see as lots of places tend to let them pile up and you don’t get to sit at a clean table.

I chose this place as a surprise dinner partner for my partners' birthday on Saturday night-he had been talking about wanting to go for a long time. WOW! What an experience. The staff who took my booking were very prompt, accommodating and lovely. They also took part in my surprise-thanks so much! I chose to have the food and matched drinks offer as it was much easier to navigate with 11 people. What a great choice! Not only was the food incredible (what is with the brussel sprouts?! We couldn't stop talking about them-amazing!), but the opportunity for the ladies (and some men!) to have cocktails and the men boilermakers (beer and whiskey) was such a great idea. Well priced, delicious food, great location, great selection of whiskeys, very cool interior. We will be back! Thanks for the great experience guys!
Brilliant staff with a friendly and unpretentious vibe. Homemade lemonade that beats literally any other lemonade out there. Chic, cosy, intimate booths to chat over a few too many whiskey sours - or whatever takes your fancy. The menu is full of choices!

The atmosphere is really nice especially if you for late drink and conversation! A bit dark tho~ not a big fan of whisky (+/- $19 the cheapest) i had the one with yuzu mixture! Taste bittersweet yet nice.

I was brought here before heading to watch a musical. A grand bar and an atmosphere that brings you to an era bygone. The interiors are that of wizened mahogany, leather chairs and dim lighting.. a special place in Melbourne to grab a drink.

What a gem of a find (hidden behind a secretive-ish door). Great ambience inside with an amazing array of beer/whiskeys displayed behind the bar ( I was actually quite mesmerised!). I'd heard about this place from a few friends and stumbled upon it one day by chance when I was in the city and had to drop in. It was a Saturday night and the place was already buzzing but we were served quickly after a short wait at the bar, which I didn't mind as it gave us a good chance to read the menu thoroughly and make a decision before ordering.
We ended up only having a beer here and sat down for about an hour as we had to meet with friends elsewhere however I was impressed with that in itself that I am keen to return soon to sample more of the menu (and graze on a cheese platter too!).
Although I love this spot already, I'd suggest stopping in for 1 or 2, as staying for the whole night would rack up a hefty bill ($$).

Verdict: Blew my mind (but was on the expensive side, $13 for a glass sized between a pot/schooner)
Visited with a friend last night. Even though the place was busy I was quickly greeted by friendly staff, and seated at a lovely table. They have real oil lamps, folks!The drinks list was HUGE, I genuinely had a challenge choosing just a handful! I ended up with a wonderful cocktail that was an experience as well as delicious (I can't remember its name but it had a sprig of rosemary in it, and set on fire! I loved it).
I ordered a burger, and my friend ordered a Lamb Shank. I thought that the burger was nice and light, with lean meat and a wonderful cheese perfectly combined. I felt comfortably full afterwards, which is always a bonus. My friend's lamb shank was well-cooked, but my friend felt that the amount of tomato was a bit 'much' without an added side of chips to balance out the flavours. Luckily we ordered chips! All in all we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and I'll definitely be back to make my way through more of those excellent cocktails.
Excellent just wow, love the ambience and the feel of this beer and whiskey bar. We had ‘The boat to Islay’, the waiter gave a good rundown of the 5 shot drink which was much appreciated as a whisky novice. The tasting was amazing and the platter comforting after the drink. Service is best. I love it!
This place rates a special mention as a shrine to everything whiskey. A fine, and endless selection, of whiskeys, craft beers and ports, to name a few. The bar staff are quite experienced in their field and can recommend where to start, even for he novice like myself. I enjoyed a few glasses and sampled some fine peated whiskey from Islay.
The in house deli has a fine selection of cured meats and cheeses. Pair this with a wine, beer, or spirit of your choice for a great night.
Don’t be fooled- this is a place for scotch, beer and meat. Yes, they do cocktails, but that’s not their main purpose. Go with the lads for a classier night. Great decor, great feel. The meat platter was unreal!

A wonderful place to slowly enjoy and appreciate a well rounded glass of whisky. Ambience makes you want to keep ordering and stay on. Only problem is to make a decision on which whisky to drink, I would suggest sticking to what you know or ask the friendly experts on the other side of the bar to help you decide. A visit here requires mandatory public transport return trip home or a stay over somewhere, because you'll have more than one. Food was great too. We tried the cheese platter and goes well with the drinks.
An oldtime speakeasy with a warm and friendly vibe. Their whisky collection will have you green with envy and drunk in no time.
We grabbed the a starwars themed boilermaker with a local Skyward whisky and a porter, plus a Glenfiddich 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch. The boilermaker comes with nibbles that compliment the beverages and are perfectly paired!

This place is an absolute gem. The outside is very mysterious and when you enter past through the wooden doors, you enter a rustic cosy whiskey attic.
We ordered a charcuterie which was presented by a bartender introducing the flavours on the board. Very impressed.
Beers on tap were very local and crafty, you won't find any commercial ones here. But especially to mention the variety of whiskies they had was amazing.

This place is pretty much ALWAYS packed and they play an iconic country rodeo style of rock music which is also pretty loud, so prepare for noise whenever you come here.
The drinks on the menus (cocktails + boilermakers) are interesting and almost always delicious, and there's a massive selection of rotating craft beers and ciders on tap if you want something a bit more down to earth.
I've never had the pleasure of eating any of BMH's cooked food because I always get here too late and the kitchen is closed, but I'll definitely make an effort at some point.
I also love the decor here, dim and warm lighting, loads of interesting looking books and knickknacks like old oil lanterns and deep sea diving helmets, and lots of dark heavy wood furnishings everywhere.
Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun and definitely not-quiet night out.
We came here upon a recommendation from a friend plus Thor drank a boilermaker in the first Thor movie. For those unfamiliar with the drink, a boilermaker is a beer cocktail where whiskey is paired with a beer.
The first thing we loved about this bar was the furniture and decorations. The walls were decorated with classic, rustic charms, our table was lit by a mini oil lantern and antiques littered the shelves.
We ordered a sandwich and chicken ribs, both of which were delicious. For drinks, we had a boilermaker and a colada nights cocktail. The whisky and beer pairing was perfect, both complimented each other, I chose to alternate sips between the whisky and beer. The colada nights cocktail while delicious was difficult to drink, most probably because the straw was too tiny.
Overall the place was great and we highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a bar after work or date night.

Boilermaker or "Beer & A Shot of Whiskey" is a concept that was very unique to me. Sure I have heard of the cheese and wine pairing but beer and whiskey was something else. Also, it almost sound like a recipe for hangover but fear not as the craft of pairing a craft beer with fine whiskey here is something to be appreciated rather than to get you wasted.
Whilst this is an amazing bar for great cured meat and cheese with an array of craft beer to choose from, do try their boilermaker. The taste is complex given the complexity of flavours & aromas in both craft beers and whiskey. Regardless, it is definitely something you would be amaze at given how well they actually go together.
This is a very cool bar! Focusing on whisky and special beers on tap this is the place to go if you want something different 🥃🍺 the atmosphere just makes you feel relaxed and transported to another city

This place is awesome. I have been here over a dozen times now and I have always had a great time. The staff are attentive and knowledgeable and the place is armed with an excellent array of beers and hard liquor. Cocktails were a hit with our group and is usually a place I always bring out of town friends when introducing them to Melbourne. thank you for the hospitality.
I love going to the boilermaker, such a great place, the low lighting and chilled atmosphere makes it so comfortable. My friend and I went there last week, we ordered the large ploughman's platter which came with; 3 cheese, 4 meats, pate, terrine, pickles and olives - I definitely recommend getting the larger platter because you want to try as much of the goodies as possible! There was also a live brass band, and they were amazing. It was very loud though... maybe too loud for the size of the place, saying that we were right in front of the stage. Overall, I can't wait to go back, this place is great and there cheeses are amazing!

Beer and whiskey are freakn amazing! Definitely a must go. Only downside is the music is way too loud, actually deafening, hurts my ears and could not hear a single word friends are saying, we would have stayed for more beer if it was a bit quieter.
Had the Boilermaker Sour, Old Fashioned, and the Stonemason. The Boilermaker Sour was an amazing interpretation of a whisky sour! The passion fruit added a nice zesty flavor to it. The old fashioned was classic; as expected. The Stonemason was smoked pretty well! Lovely ambience and quaint little cocktail bar with an unassuming exterior. Prices were typical for cocktails

Cost place to head to and enjoy a cocktail or 8. The options of drinks there are huge and the staff are really accommodating and friendly, and can generally get you a table in no time.
Ambience is great here if you're looking for a place to take a date. Wouldn't have minded some bar snacks, but the charcuterie options they had looked great though.

We ordered the Monday night special of a Beer Float with Matched Cheese. The pairings were selected perfectly with the creamier cheese balancing against the heavier beers and the lighter beers working brilliant against the stronger flavoured cheese.
We also had delicious Jalapeño Poppers that were stuffed with the best combination of spicy morcilla (blood sausage) and cream cheese which highlighted the sweetness of the jalapeño and crunchiness of the batter perfectly!
We also had a side spicy Hungarian Csabai to go with the cheese board.
Everything was absolutely delicious!

Now this is an example of a typical Melbourne bar, dark, sophisticated and unique. The service was phenomenal for nearly 12am and the cocktails were spot on. Had a few booths that would be ideal for groups and plenty of room! Loved this venue!
What a beauty. The ambience was wonderful and my cocktail came cutely wrapped. Concrete, dim lighting, exposed brick, all my favourite design elements were incorporated at this watering hole where the drinks menu is something like 70 pages long! They have a great range of charcuterie and snacks. I recommend the jalapeño poppers! The selection of boiler makers and whiskeys is impressive (hence the name...) and some of the cocktails are real crackers.
Sometimes the music is a tad on the loud side, but they always have great playlists and the mood lighting is flattering, especially when you're trying to hide massive bags under yours eyes because you've been staying up late eating charcuterie...

I really enjoy grabbing a drink from Boilermaker House, it has a nice chill vibe and staff that know their pours, a range which is as extensive as it is satisfying. Our last little visit was for a friend’s birthday and we holed ourselves up in one of their booths for most of an evening. There’s a few nesting spots around the place and the “floating” table near the front is particularly cool to note (and handy if you have long legs). Boilermaker House is conveniently located on Lonsdale Street and made for a good compromise for people arriving from different directions of the city.

First time patron last night and I was blown away. The entrance with the large door opens to a 'basement-bar' like room where the incredible wall of whiskey's is the main attraction. The atmosphere was fantastic and I can't wait to try a lot more of what they have to offer.

Boilermaker House is the second Melbourne venue to be opened by Speakeasy Group, which is behind one of Melbourne's best Speakeasy cocktail bars, Eau de Vie. Opening over a year ago, Boilermaker House has chosen to take a more laid back and rustic feel, which extends to both the decor and the atmosphere with low lighting and bare walls.
Great space, good staff and a very extensive drinks list. It was great to have cocktails that were a little different, as mostly based on whiskey which I wouldn't necessarily gravitate towards in another cocktail bar. A good mix between tables you can sit at with a group, as well as more a informal bar tables/standing area. Great for both food and drinks, drinks with friends, or just a night cap, a very diverse place.
Very cool place with heaps of cheeses and cold cut meats. They also have a wide range of beers. We've ordered a 3 cheese platter and a 5 meats platter to share, the selection depends on what they have at the moment. As a Frenchie, quality was good and it was such a pleasure to get a bit of gold :) the bar has a great vibe

之前每次路过都以为是间小店，后来推开那扇像墙壁一样的『门』进去后才发现里面很大很漂亮，很有印第安的风格。主营啤酒和威士忌，酒单左边是啤酒，右边是威士忌，中间是啤酒混合威士忌。试了两种啤酒两种威士忌都很棒！（忘了名字，只记得tap最左边的那个啤酒最好喝）帮朋友点杯调酒也很好喝，bartender态度很好而且看起来都嬉皮士很牛逼的样子哈哈。『酒吧』感很浓，开到凌晨3点也算是很晚了，适合约会、小聚、装逼等等。

Very hip and in place to go for this part of town - it was busy which have it great atmosphere without being too loud. Whilst my partner loves to have a fine whiskey I'm not a fan at all and can say have never ordered a glass. On the recommend of the very knowledgable barman he suggested I try the Glendronach and that I did and it was wonderful - so pleased I tried!!
We got recommended this place by our waitress at EDV. I must say it was a winner. The place has a barn looking vibe to it, i like the use of timber everywhere. Come here to try the craft beers by the growler and 1200 odd whiskys by the glass! Don't miss the buttered popcorn and cheese for nibbles!
The Boilermaker is a classic cocktail that’s gaining in popularity, and Boilermaker House (the ultra-cool bar on Swanston and Lonsdale Street) knows how to showcase it to the max. The whisky-and-beer combination makes total sense once you’ve tried it — and then that’s all you’ll want to drink from now on. We were invited to partake in their brand-new Boilermaker: a combination of Newstead Brewing Company’s Rivet Red Ale, paired with Glenlivet Nadurra Oloroso Cask.
Friend recommended this place and so glad he did. Mulled cider and beer choice exceptional. If you are into whiskeys this is the place. Service is good and very helpful.
Celebrated a birthday here recently, opting for the 3 course set dinner with pairing beer and whisky. Loved it!!! Sharing plates for all three courses accompanied with a nip of whisky and a handle of beer. Photos are dark as that's what the lighting is inside. Cosy and warm, ideal setting for a cold Melbourne night. Birthday boy had a whisky flight to start off, great way to sample untried whisky's n beers. Me a glass of Mumm. Great food, great drinks, great service! We'll be back.
Great bar/restaurant with a speakeasy/prohibition era vibe. More of a craft beer and whiskey bar, it still has a reasonable cocktail list. There are several seating options to cater for different paces - booths, high tables and a quieter seated dining area at the end.
Unparalleled selection of whiskey and staff that know how to explain it. Plenty of cheese and charcuterie on offer as well. The perfect place to wind down after a hard day at work.
Went here for after work drinks on Friday. Really loved the atmosphere here and the service was great. I ordered Great Odin's Raven (excuse me for not having any photos, my phone ran out of battery) and it was a "surprise". My friend had gin and he liked it as well. Will definitely come back for more drinks!!

Had $1 oysters only on Wednesday nights followed with a Tom Collins and a bowl of whiskey salted chips. The place itself is very beautiful and the atmosphere was very inviting. I encourage anyone who loves whiskey to give this place a visit. They have a wall of whiskeys ranging from A-Z and the bartenders made the experience as interesting and theatrical as possible. They were not hesitant to talk to you to see what types of food and drinks suited your mood. I will definitely be coming back again!

What a fantastic place! My boyfriend and I were looking for a quick drink after dinner and came across this place without any foreknowledge.
After we entered through that gorgeous solid wooden door we were amazed by the cosy rustic atmosphere, which had nice warm natural colours with a sprinkling of books, and we were greeted by some good tunes that included Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
The display of cured meats and cheese definitely boded well as we entered further.
Obviously we had come across a place perfectly suited for my tastes, considering so many places in the city are either too crowded or play terrible music.
As a budding Whiskey fan I was overwhelmed by just looking at all the beautiful bottles lining the shelves. Unable to decide I hit up a bartender and asked for some recommendations, and let me just say right now that the staff were lovely, he gave us a menu and chatted with us about what kind of flavours we were after and his recommendation was spot on.
A drink turned into a couple as we found a comfortable booth and ordered some soft cheese and olives, which were delicious.
Definitely going to be frequenting this place when I'm in the city in the future. Absolutely loved it.

Wow! Wow and wow! What a surprise! Dropped in here for dinner and I was pleasantly surprised by the delicious food, great service and wine.
Apparently most of the menu is designed for sharing. So my friend and I grabbed the Duck main, the burger, and the polenta chips (with blue cheese sauce) to share. The duck was so delicious with well paired garnish/sides. The duck was slightly chewy... But the flavours made up for it. The burger was amazing! With all the burger joints popping up, you'd think it would be hard to compete... But the cheese and meat made this burger so more-ish. The polenta chips were cooked to perfection... The blue cheese sauce was a must though. I wouldn't be keen on this again without the sauce... Lucky it was so good (and made on site apparently).
They have an amazing list of whisky and beer here... It's what they are famous for. Unconventionally my friend and I got wine instead. I was therefore very surprised when I looooved the Sauvignon Blanc. It wasn't at all acidic and very smooth. I'd be happy to come back even just for the wine (beware the wine list is very short).
The service was great. Our waitress spent a while with us talking about the menu and answering any questions we had. We were here on a Tuesday night though... So I can't talk to a busy night.
I'll be looking for any excuse to come here again. Definitely coming back and recommending to friends.

I would say it is one of the hidden spots in Melbourne, I always walked past this place but never noticed this amazing bar. With a not so grand outlook, the interiors re rustic and to die for. The service was brilliant, the waitress who served us patiently explained their specials and the boilermakers.
The boilermakers were to die for, omg! What a concept. Definitely worth the money. We tried the Devils smokehouse and two other drinks from their specials- they were all brilliant.
Their beer collection is massive, will definitely go back to try them out.
