This is one of those Melbourne's "hidden" treasures. Nice environment, great customer service, and food: just delicious. I had a smoked salmon fried rice and it was really good, not over or under seasoned. Try it with sweet chilli sauce...

How about some Taiwanese Tapas? If i’m not mistaken, Huang Jin, means gold.. and parts were surely gold! A colleague introduced me to Mr. Huang Jin because of their taiwanese fried chicken (TFC). They’d always order a 2nd dish whenever they go. And it did not disappoint! We went on a Wednesday night around 6pm, at about 7pm it was full house! So be in quick or perhaps make a reservation.. It is a cosy restaurant just off an alley way of Katherine Place…
Real find for us, in an area not renown for Asian eats. Had vego Singapore noodles and dumplings. Tasty, with a light touch in the preparation. Will come again to try more. Recommended!

Decent quality food at affordable prices. Fried chicken, dumplings, satay skewers and gua bao were all really yummy. The xiaolongbao was average.
The restaurant is very small so there’s not much room between tables. The seats were interesting (not very comfortable though).
Mr Huang Jin in Melbourne CBD. It is a boutique dumpling house serving the xiaolongbao and other steam and fried dumplings. I don’t think it is authentic Shanghainese style but a bit fusion and more juicy. Xiaolongbao is a bit small and expensive but overall it is tasty and like the duck fried rice as well.
Small place that is almost always packed. Their chilli dimsum is unmatched and difficult to not obssess over. Small menu with a bit of the mainstream items. All very delicious. The rice noodles were done nicely as well with just the right amount of crunch to it. However this placd is known for it's dimsums
The chicken roll was a bit empty and dry and kept falling apart but the roll cover was tasty.
So grateful to find this hidden gem near Southern Cross Station. Lovely juicy xiao long bao, tasty pan fried dumplings, stir fried vegetarian noodle and Taiwanese fried chicken. Have to mention the special cold noodle dish that was recommended by one of the staffs. It's a great summer dish to share. It has a peanut and sesame dressing on it, so delicious. Will visit again.
Hands down best dumplings I have had in Melbourne! It’s a place where you can actually sit down and enjoy your meal, rather than the ‘get ‘em in, get ‘me out’ experience that you typically have in dumpling restaurants. Also the acoustics in this restaurant are excellent - when taking my parents, grandparents or other family members out for dinner it’s always great to be able to hear them! Prawn wontons, laksa filled dumplings and TFC particular favourites!

Used to work in the same building so it’s always one of my lunch options. Came back recently, it still tasted the same - one of the quality lunch dining places hidden in Flinders lane even though the place is a bit tight. I would give 5 stars and come frequently if they would offer a lunch budget price.
Beautiful service starting with an invitation to come out of the cold while perusing the menu outside. Then there were the dumplings! So delicate and delicious. I followed these with the dragon dessert. Yummy! Super fast service and I was made to feel comfortable as a single diner while reading my book. The restaurant I went to was on Katherine Lane just off of Flinders St.
I loooove XLB. Xiao long bao are those freaking tasty soup dumplings. Delicious pockets of goodness. Soooo my hotel in Melbourne CBD was evacuated for fire for four hours and I became really sick of standing around outside in the cold. I meandered off and found Mr Huang Jin. I think I have been here before, many years ago. I have vague recollections.

The dumplings/wonton was served with a unique sauce and I personally I found that it was a perfect pairing especially with the lettuce.

This place is one where you walk in and fell in live such great decor and super friendly staff. Food is always fresh and cook perfectly. Dumpling is tender and juicy
This restaurant was a lovely surprise that we happened upon because we were going to a comedy show in the area. All the dumplings that we chose were delicious - pork laksa xiao long bao, steamed pork and prawn in a deliciously fragrant chilli oil, pan fried seafood, and pan fried chicken with lemongrass sauce. The Taiwanese Fried Chicken was also delicious and came with some sort of crispy leaf which we couldn’t identify but was the perfect complement to the chicken and kewpie mayo. A bit more expensive than your standard dumplings at about $18 for 8 pieces but well worth it.
This place was delicious!!! I had the pork laksa dumpling and I’ve never had anything quite like it! The duck spring roll was also delicious! The prices are however quite high, for 8 very small dumplings $18? They were so good though. Also thought it was strange they were doing a 1.5% surcharge for paying by card - I thought this was illegal now? However service was friendly and I would return!
All ways good to eat at a place that speciality is one thing , and they do dumplings so well. I have eaten here a number of times and all the dumplings are superb , all hand made on site , fresh and clean. I must visit , great new hip eating location.

Mr Huang Jin is noticeably more expensive than any other dumpling restaurant I’ve ever been to, but I think it’s worth it! Not only is it clean and the service good, but the food is also excellent.
The dumplings are stuffed generously, the xiao long bao are decent (but could have more soup I think) and they give you slivers of young ginger to mix your dumpling sauce with (winning!) It’s a small touch, but a much appreciated one.
The duck fried rice was glistening when it came out, tasting of the smoky wok it had been tossed in moments before. Perhaps the best fried rice I’ve ever tasted, I’ll definitely be returning for more of that. The chicken roti roll was also outstanding - crisp, buttery, thin, layers of bread wrapped around shredded cucumber and satay chicken, it was far superior to the one I happily devoured at Chef Lagenda the night before.
All in all, I left feeling pretty chuffed. Having to work on the Monday before the cup holiday suddenly didn’t seem to bad after having had lunch!
The laksa xiao long bao was what drew me here. But the chilli wontons were the ones that made me stay.
The laksa xlb is definitely a cool concept. Flavoursome but not enough soup.
The chilli wontons! I love the sauce, spicy, sweet and sour all combine together pairs extremely well with the prawn filling.

The food here is delicious and authentic at reasonable prices. The authentic was such that some of dishes brought back memories of me being 8 years and living in Asia. The tapas style dishes are especially suited to a single diner, where one can reasonably order 2 or 3 dishes with a side of rice. This may be a better option than ordering a whole dish of fried rice or noodles if budget allows. The dumplings are a must try. Some of them are extremely authentic while others are modern and creative. A minor annoyance was the table surfaces, they all seemed rather sticky. Secondly, as with many Asian restaurants it is heavy on the MSG and you may feel the effect afterwards.
I was not expecting the food to be so delicious! The dumplings were juicy and well balanced. I enjoyed the prawn fried rice with the deep fried squid. Service was excellent. Wait staff were friendly and efficient. You are entitled to free tapas after accumulating 15 points on the rewardle card.
This place is my Favourite i love coming here and recommend it to everyone! The food is brilliant as is the amazing service! Thanks team you are the best!
Quaint, minimalist designed space with good Taiwanese dumplings, but constrained in every direction ......
They used to be in a bigger place at the Rialto .... so they've moved to a smaller venue.
It feels like an "immaculate" minimalist designed space, which is fantastic, however the angle divider beams running of the wall is the main culprit to make this small venue very non-practical and dangerous. So tightly "designed" and set up to make it extremely hard for patrons to move about, enjoy the ambiance and staff to access in serving, and you must watch your head.
However, they are serving some good and not common dumplings plus other dishes, sadly very constrained and struggling in serving these Taiwanese beauties to a near packed house of some 24/26 seats. Hence, it's very difficult to reserve a table for a "group" bigger than four.

The west end of the city is relatively starved of restaurants. However huang jing is a great dumpling restaurant not only for this part of town but just generally across the cbd. The pan fried dumplings were fantastic, as well as the xiao long bao. It's on the pricey side however ($15 for 8 dumplings) which quells my rating a little.
Always good! Staff are always friendly too! Mainly get takeaway but eating in is quite pleasant too. Great quick and easy midweek meal. Definitely recommend.
DO: The XLB, chilli won ton, TFC and brown fried rice.
DON'T: Forget to try their many versions of XLB. Fav was the laksa XLB. Delish.
TIP: Place is tiny so book ahead or go at non peak times to avoid disappointment.
Fantastic little hidden gem! If I lived in Melbourne I'd be here every week. Fabulous food, service and venue, and great value. Don't use the Zomato booking function as we were told the restaurant couldn't take the booking. Rang them and got in straightaway. Highly recommended.
Excellent food and services! The food there is very delicate and good. And for my taste, the chief really made Taiwanese food and dumplings even better. He kept the good part of Taiwanese transitional dishes and improved the part that it's normally a bit more oily and less pretty. We ordered two shiao lon bao, one the traditional and one chilly with family secret sauce. Loved them! The pan fried dumpling we so good! A bit different than what I tasted in Taiwan, but for me, it was an improvement of the dish. We ordered the seafood one, and it was amazing. The chicken rap and friend pork( forgot the names) we ordered were good, but prefer the dumplings and shiao lon bao. The wine (pino noir) that we were told to be the most popular in the restaurant was just okay for the price. The service was excellent. We always had water and wine filled up and the waitress was very friendly. The price was very fair! Overall, it was a very good experience, would recommend it and go back again!
Very yummy food, love the fact that they have brown rice fred rice, and it tasted exceptional. The pork rib was fingers licking good. The viniger has a hint of plumb taste and was a great compliment for the xiao long bao. The other half was very excited they have beer lao. :p
Tried this place for lunch and really liked it. Its cosy, the staff is very friendly and the food is fresh. light and tasty. There was nothing greasy and even deep fried items came out really light. The prawn dumplings and grilled butterfish were my favourites. Overall very impressive! Cant wait to come back for dinner. Thank you

I would suggest one of the best restaurants for serving dumplings. Not to mention other great dishes. Service is attentive but not overbearing. A touch on the pricey side but well worth a go. Pan fried chicken is great as is chilli xlb. The wontons are also a house specialty!

Really nice cozy gems for Taiwaniess small eats. Xiao Long Bao and spicy wonton, grilled Chicken skewers and beef buns are all taste quite nice. Service is adequate. Decoration is quite modern!

Summary Review: Probably has one of the best dumplings I’ve ever had. There is a quite unique taste to all their traditional Taiwanese dishes, & often find ourselves saying “ohhhhh yum! What is that nice flavour ?” I highly recommend their Xiao long Bao dumplings and their Wontons in Chilli sauce. In the menu you will see “Mr. Huang Jin special pork” or “family secret sauce” on the description which is probably the quality ingredient or element that will make you go “mmmmm yum” at every bite. I also recommend the butterfish dish! It’s soo good! Overall the food is top notch & service is quite good too. The place is quite small so if you don’t have a booking, there is going to be a bit of a waits but it’s all worth it! It’s also a bit pricey than the other Taiwanese restaurant but you definitely get your money’s worth in taste and flavour.

Exceptional dumplings... All the previous reviews of the soup dumplings are spot on. Wonderful authenticity of a true broth. A little surprise that I wasn't expecting was the duck spring rolls - honestly the best I've had. I'm not going to post photos of dumplings cause let's admit it they all look like dumplings nothing fancy but the pork bun on presentation looked amazing and loved up to expectation however you will need to appreciate the flavours as its a start contract to the Chinese version we are all used to with red sauce and minced pork in a fluffy bun. Love a little stamp touch on the surface! Mr Huang I will be back... And finally great atmosphere and good ambiance music in the background.

Wontons in chilli sauce! So delicious!! A noodle dish with seafood was pretty average. Sad they don't take bookings for lunch but they do for dinner.
It’s a little street at the corner of town that I don’t usually find myself in but if you do ever venture down Katherine Place you’ll find a little hub of foodie activity with beautiful cakes, dumplings, Japanese and curry on offer – Who knew!! I am sure lots of people do know as they were all reasonably busy on warm summer Wednesday evening and we were lucky enough to drop in on Mr Huang Jin Dumplings and have some of the best dumplings I have had in ages.
With chefs from Din Tai Fung, the legendary Taipei-based global chain, it is not surprising that Mr Huang Jin has rapidly gained a cult following. Casual sophistication is the name of the game. Located at Katherine Place in the ‘New York’ end of Flinders Lane, Mr Huang Jin seats 40 guests inside their new interior that has been modeled around the simplicity but strong heritage of the bamboo-steaming basket.
Excellent food and should have a queue to get in - Much better quality than most dumpling places and more variety on the menu.

Another tapas place with a different type of cuisine. I didn't know much about the Taiwanese tapas but what a surprise!
I had been told this restaurant was doing some seriously good dumplings, but being in a tapas mood recently, this is what we went mostly for.
We tried the fried chicken, the satay skewers, the roti roll and the taiwanese pork buns. These ones were to die for! We ended up trying the beef version but it wasn't as good as the pork one.
The staff recommended some dumplings too so we tried their xiao long baos and wontons - both pretty good.
The place is small so we felt lucky to have a table on a Friday night. Good food, but not cheap, just like any tapas place in town.
I highly recommend this place , the food is exemplary . Their steamed prawn and pork wontons are seriously delicious . They hand make the dumplings and wontons in store , the proof is in the taste . This is quality food , so don't expect China Bar prices , but it won't send you bankrupt like The flower Drum . Fairly priced for what you get .
Nice but a tad expensive for what it is. Especially when you can see so much pre made and reheated. Tasted nice enough but $45 a head for a few dumplings and main was on the steep side without any wow factor and being at the rear end of the cbd too.
Part of me is amazed the the likes of Broadsheet and Urbanlist rate it so highly, but then again these publications are all show and no real food substance most of the time anyway so I will add this to the list of 'misses the mark'.

Mr. Huan Jin, your food was good, and that's a good thing, but that wasn't what I was hoping for.
This eatery has a weird feel about it, it wasnt busy when we dined here and having the bar/ and service area open to the dining room give a strange feel. Also the tables where incredibly sticky, the plates and glassware were stuck to them and it took some effort to lift them each time (apparently due to the varnish on them).
On the upside service was good and quite professional, friendly manager who made good menu recommendations, the food was very good though we just had dumplings and didn't try anything else. These guys need to sand the varnish off those sticky tables, it gives a bad first impression.
Mr Huang Jin is kind of a modern fusion take on a dumpling restaurant, with a casual sophisticated ambiance. The starter soup that came free was too bland but still a nice touch. We enjoyed our xiao long bao, and dumplings both steamed and pan fried. Everything certainly had more finesse than your average dumplings, but I'm not sure that they were necessarily tastier. The Taiwanese fried chicken was really yum. But the highlight was the Monkey's Treasure dessert! Deep fried banana dipped in toffee... this was the average banana fritter elevated several miles to another level. So delicious and highly recommended! The price tag per head (~$40 for food) was exorbitant for dumplings, even if it was "sophisticated dumplings", so I am unlikely to come back even though the food was nice.
Love the new location in Katherine Place, if you are fans of dumplings you will be in for a treat as their are many different yummy varieties on offer as well a great offering of Chinese style tapas. Really enjoy eating this way by picking through lots of small dishes.

Love this hip and fusion place. The curry laksa Xiao Lung Bao impressed me the most. It's interesting. I will also recommend to try their pork spare ribs as well. I believe they ca expand a little bit on their menu

The place is small, one might feel a bit cramped but I find it cute and intimate.

The dumplings selection is good. The Xiao Long Baos are the best in town. They are delicate and flavoursome and served in the right temperature. The size of the dumplings are just right. Dumplings are meant to be petit, like the way it's been done here. The seating arrangements can be improved as the new premises is a lot smaller than the previous location so it can feel quite cramped during lunch hour. If you are wanting to have cheap dumplings like the dumpling houses in every other suburbs then this is not the place for you. For the quality you are getting, it is worth the money.

I’d gladly bring friends to Mr Huang Jin for their xiao long bao. Perhaps I would choose a day with more temperate weather because of those glass panels.

Absolutely delicious in every way. I was surprised to read the last few negative comments on here when we had a fantastic Wednesday night dinner here. The waiting staff were super attentive (maybe too attentive?) and we couldn't fault a dish. Yes, they are higher priced than China town dumplings but you get what you pay for. Amazing Xiao long bao that had a delicate pastry and so much flavour (try the wasabi). We will be back for sure.

Best meal I have had in Melbourne
Crossed off item from my list!. I had long wanted to try the xiao long bao dumplings with soup inside, but we have no Taiwanese places at home. So I put this place on my list for Melbourne and it did not disappoint.
I first tried the classic flavour with pork and basic broth. They were okay but I had really wanted the ones with laksa and the waiter convinced me to try and basic ones first. I almost left after my duck rolls and classic xiao long bao - but decided to get another round of the laksa ones - boy am I glad I did. They were a little piece of dumpling heaven!
The duck rolls were good too, amazing sauce!
First things first if you want the best dumplings in Melbourne go to Hutong. This is a good alternative though if you want something different. Only problem is that the dumplings are very small and had to eat about 20 just to be satisfied. The chilli xao long bao are great... But small. Good service and a good experience.... 7 out of 10
Top place. My boyfriend brought me here for my birthday dinner and I am glad he did. Many of my friends had been to this place recently and told me a lot of good things about it.
It is a modern atmosphere (that matches the Rialto towers) and the food is very traditional. I mean, for what I know about Taiwanese cuisine. I was surprised the waiting staff was French. They were friendly and efficient, they could guide us through the wide selection of dishes they offer. Their Xiao Long Baos are great, so are their tapas! Their pork belly (fluffy) bun was my favourite.
The only thing I could be a bit fussy about is the size of the portions. But I guess this is the tapas culture.
In the end, I would say great Taiwanese food with such a proper French service is a perfect match!

Yummy. We've been to this restaurant for dinner. It was not very busy (about 10 tables) but the atmosphere was very warm and staff welcoming. I have to say everything here is made to make you feel comfortable: the warm lights (contrasting the high ceilings), the pickles you are offered after you are sit at your table, the attention you get from the staff... We've been advised some chef's specials and weren't disappointed. We had some eye fillet in a pepper sauce that was sublime. We obviously also had some Xiao Long Baos, quite famous at this place, and we now know why: the skin was super thin, the broth inside full of flavours, just like the stuff.
Food was pricey. But I am more than happy to pay that money for that food quality. You pay for what you get!
Wines were not that expensive and we picked a Sauvignon Blanc which matched the food beautifully.

Great experience!. The place has super high ceilings and modern atmosphere. Since we only knew about the dumplings (best Xiao Long Bao I've tried), the staff recommend some dishes from their tapas section, and after having tried the Taiwanese Fried chicken and the spicy squid, I just wanted more. What an explosion of flavours! The sauces combinations are pretty clever, looks like the chef really knows what he's doing. In the end, meal wasn't cheap, but taking into account the charming service and the great food, I have to say you pay for what you get!
My favourite lunch place - for when I am loaded. This place makes the most amazing xiao long bao. The laksa xiao long bao are excellent. I also like the prawn shumai. Their spring onion pancake used to be a favourite as well but they have recently changed it to have egg on top and the sauce is different. It is not so nice now. I wish they would change it back. It is expensive so you wouldn't want to go everyday but it is such good quality. The service is also excellent. They are very attentive and remember their regulars and recommend good dishes. I really like the staff there. Everyone is very friendly. A really classy place.
Dumplingicious!!!. By far the best dumplings I've ever had and this place has become a once-a-week must! The ginger dumplings are divine, the chilli dumplings incredible and the pork & prawns wontons in chilli sauce are what dreams are made of. Then comes the spicy squid that makes me weak at the knees. And finally, this place has driven me to a point I didn't think was possible - banging on about broccoli. That's right - even the Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce is drool-worthy. And for those who complain about the price, it aint that expensive and you get what you pay for.

but they were all VERY EXPENSIVE... I don't think I can afford the xiao long baos on a regular basis considering the are $19 per basket when other restaurants are only set at around $10? sometiems $8.50?
It's yummy... but I just don't think it's $19 worth of yumminess... The xiao long bao at Long Dragon on King's way is yum too... only $9...
I might come back, MIGHT, on special occasions only...
People who can afford expensive meals will surely be able to enjoy this~
Great Lunch Spot. A lunch for two a couple of weeks ago. Several serves of different dumplings and all very fresh, flavorsome and good value. A couple of other 'non dumpling' dishes tried including a spicy chicken and a plate of fresh Chinese vegetables. All very good. The atrium location provides lots of terrific light and openness which can often be missing in Chinese restaurants. Only open Mon - Fri but we will certainly be back for a dinner sitting.
We did not make reservation but the staff let us in before next reservation arrival. Food taste good. We had TFC (Taiwanese Fried Chicken), Prawn Dumplings (蝦餃) and Kung Po chicken.
A recommendation from a friend so decided to come by. Cosy place and advice to make booking during peak period. Enjoy the dumplings and tried the fried duck rice. Great taste. Will return to try others on the menu.
Went for the Xiao Long Bao and they definitely didn't disappoint! Also had the Emerald pork dumplings and pan fried beef dumplings which were really tasty, but was so busy eating and getting into it we forget to take a photo to add with the Xiao Long Bao!
It is a little small so you may feel a bit cramped especially if you have more than 3 or 4 people, but the smaller space suits the atmosphere pretty much perfectly.
Everyone at my workplace raves about these dumplings, and they don't disappoint... So full of flavour! Be warned it is bustling on a weekday lunch time.
Hidden off the street, a great spot for authentic and tasty Taiwanese dishes. Perfect Xioa Long Bao!

Visit before heading to the airport for my flight back to Sydney. Informed the staff beforehand that we are kind of in a rush and the dishes were sent out real quick. The Taiwanese friend chicken is super delicious and so does the hot and sour soup. Will definitely go again for our next visit in Melbourne for other dishes on the menu.
Some of the best dumplings we have ever tasted, quality ingredients. Taiwanese fried chicken and chicken chop to die for, fried rice was flavourful and not oily. Can't fault any of the flavours, service was friendly and prompt as this place is consistently busy, especially at lunch. Will definitely be back!
