Review Shakahari Too - Melbourne

Liza Wei
Delicious food, beautiful murals and the service was flawless. Fantastic range of vegan and gluten free options. We're neither vegan or GF, but still loved the food. Highly recommended!

Dear Shakahari Too, Today wasn’t the best day. It was the greatest day. My mouth was wet with the watering from thy food. I did not die of my nut allergy as you cared for me so deeply. I felt held. I will be returning. Yours, Harrison Storm

This was our first stop on our trip to Melbourne and it did not disappoint! We had the udon, which was delicious. As vegetarians, it is so nice to be able to select from the entire menu, and know that people are putting thought into their meatless options. Also, the people working there were so kind—they gave us lots of ideas of what to do in Melbourne and the surrounding areas. It was clear that they put a lot of time and thought into their food and service. Thank you!

Had such an amazing night at Shakahari Too! The service was PHENOMENAL! As soon as we walked through the door, we were greeted with such kindness and warmth. And this is before the food came out, which was spectacular! We basically ordered the whole menu and there are no regrets. Not a single one. Can't recommend enough. Would 10000% visit again.

AMAZING food!! All vegan, delicious, nutritious, incredible service, so so happy. We went as a group of 5 and shared everything, they catered to a treenut allergy and we left sooo happy and full. Thank you also to the beautiful man who served us, top notch service! We will be BACK

Oh my golly jeepers! My friends and I literally had THE greatest evening. We shared almost every dish on the menu, and loved them all! Delicious food, exceptional service and a beautiful night had by all. We cannot wait to go back!

I must admit the satay it’s super tasty! The place is really cute and intimate. I would definitely come back to try more dishes on their menu. Overall I had a good experience.. 👍👍👍

Absolutely amazing food and great service. I've been here a couple of times and every dish was on point. This restaurant is fantastic, even for someone who isn't vegetarian. The flavors were perfectly balanced, interesting, and beautifully plated. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

I had visitors from New Zealand and Sydney and my guests requested to have vegetarian and one of them is Vegan. I did a search online and found Shakahari Too.

Upon speaking with one of the staff, we found out owners are of Malaysian background and hence why the menu is a mix of Asian/Western fusion.

🔆LOCATION🔆

Conveniently located on Clarendon Street in South Melbourne between York and Coventry Street.

As you walk in the restaurant is a little understated, but there is a homely feel. There is an upstairs area which is good for private functions. There is also another section at the back as well.

🔆SERVICE🔆

Extremely friendly and down to early staff. Introduced each menu item as they were delivered to our table. Offered great tips in food items.

🔆MENU/PRICE🔆

Between 4 people we ordered the following to share:

Entrée: Walnut Yuri Noodles, $16.00
(Korean clear noodles – 100% sweet potato noodles, tossed in a sesame ginger oil, olive leaf paste, fresh herbs and seasame seeds. Topping: julienned cucumber, cabbage, ginger, coriander, beancurd crisps and caramelized walnuts)

Mushroom Hempseed Ravioli, $16.50
(Poached freshly made ravioli filled with mixture of mushrooms, hemp seeds and Thai basil. Stock: mild soy milk and vegetable stock flavoured with lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves)

Main:
Quinoa Croquettes, $21.50
(Crunchy croquettes consist of yam, potato, quinoa, dried turnip, roast macadamia nut and diced vegetables. Side: Kimchi and steamed greens. Sauce: mild chilli onion wasabi)

Legendary Satay, $21.50
(Fried skewers of beancurd, seitan, onion and capsicum. Side: pickled purple cabbage and pink radish, blanched greens. Sauce: mild satay peanut)

Calsparra Paella Rice, $22.50
(Calsparra Spanish rice cooked in turmeric vegetable stock and pistachio. Stew: grilled eggplant, red capsicum, zucchini, tomato, quince paste and seeded mustard. Side: rocket greens with quince vinaigrette).

Dessert:

Black Sesame Pudding, $15.50
(Black sesame flour, organic soy milk and grated candied ginger – sauce: pumpkin and coconut sugar)

Lime Coconut Cheesecake, $15.50
(Coconut kaffir lime cheesecake set with agar-agar powder in a base of dates, walnuts and chia seeds)

Raw Chocolate Berry Mousse, $15.50
(Mixed berries, dates, banana, Belgian cacao and organic coconut oil)

Organic Coconut Ice Cream, $8.00

🔆VERDICT🔆

Vegetarian and Vegan visitors were extremely impressed by the menu. I took was quite delighted to try something different.

Overall, we enjoyed everything we ordered. Everything was delicious and full of flavour, my only issue was that the servings was on the smaller side including the mains. The satay and croquettes was my favourite. The noodles (entree) was super yummy and I think we could have ordered a second serve of it !

Although it looks like we ordered alot for four people - 2 entree and 3 main's it really wasnt enough and hence why we kinda went all out on dessert.

I loved the black sesame pudding - it tasted more like solid jelly and it went really well with the organic coconut ice cream which was light and refreshing.

The Raw Chocolate Berry Mousse was a bit too heavy and sweet for my liking but again if you have it with the Organic Coconut Ice Cream, its actually quite nice.

The Lime Coconut Cheesecake, didnt taste like cheesecake, I think that was my least favourite dessert.

This was our second visit and we enjoyed it again. Paella, satay, spaghetti, avocado magic and cheesecake. We shared this (3 of us) and it was plenty of food. With me being vegan and my friends being GF both our requirements can be met. At times the service is overly attentive so we felt the need to say that we were still eating etc. It is on the pricey side for portion size with the dessert especially overpriced ($15.50 for a tiny slice) so I wouldn’t order dessert again. Paella wasn’t what I expected (quite soggy). Other than that, food and service is good.

Wholesome and delicious vegan food in a spacious and beautiful venue. Everything is made fresh-to-order, yet the service is quick and professional. My personal favourite is the satay. Lots of colourful vegetables served with seitan and tofu that's absolutely drenched in a flavour-packed sauce. YUM. I'm craving their food right now...

The one and only complaint I have is that the serving sizes are a bit small compared to the price you pay.
Facebook User
Wow! The flavours are spectacular. LOVED the satay. By far the best. I can't stop thinking about it. Also make sure you get the Tofu Caramel for dessert.
I was indifferent to the paella (not at all like what a paella should be) but will be back to try everything else. And to eat that satay again.
The New Fave
are so many delicious real vegetables to choose from. Our order for the night consisted of mushroom hempseed ravioli in broth, papaya salad,. satay skewers and laksa. . Whilst all the dishes were tasty, and clearly consisted of fresh ingredients,. all the dishes were lacking any form of spice (even a mild spice would have

As a carnivore and newcomer to vegetarian cuisine, this place has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants. I can't believe that I've become a regular at a veggie restaurant!
Mins
Such a lovely place with delicious food and friendly staff!! The only thing is that it’s a bit pricey, but we will definitely be coming back to try the other options.
Adi
Went there for my friends anniversary and the other couple happened to be vegetarian. Hence this place was chosen. I can definitely say that one of the best vegan places in Melbourne. The food has flavour and a great balance. We decided to share so we got a chance to try it all. The desserts were the best and will definitely recommend anyone who wants to get their hands on good vegan food
Hungrylittleshrew
Although I have been a vegan for 4 years, I was quite concerned about the obscureness of this menu. However, Shakahari Too did not disappoint!

I was with a large group and therefore got to try the entire menu between us, which was a treat! I could not fault anything, and the staff were so friendly!

Such a quaint, yet delicious restaurant for both meat-eaters and vegans to enjoy together.
Jennyabouttown
Love their vegan lasagna! It is a dish I get every time I go. It is my ‘go to’ dish.

Their laksa is amazing too.

A great place for those non meat eaters. Service friendly and great.

Small menu but still a good selection of options.
Xtina
By no means am I a vegan or vegetarian, but this restaurant did not make me miss meat! Food was super tasty and rich, but not too rich, so we didn’t leave hungry. I’d come back to try more or even head to their Carlton outlet to try what they have on offer!
Quince And Cheese
I haven't been to Shakahari yet, but it should be great if Shakahari Too is anything to go by. It's a really cute, quaint little spot with incredibly friendly staff and inviting decor. The food is almost all vegan, making ordering a breeze. I also appreciate that they emphasize healthy, whole-food ingredients as opposed to all the Melbourne vegan spots that celebrate vegan junk food. It has its time and place, but I prefer the more wholesome options. I highly recommend the veg croquettes - they taste like comfort food but are well balanced in terms of nutrients and ingredients. I also got the tofu and cucumber ribbon salad topped with an interesting combination of chestnut, goji berry and matcha vinaigrette. It was a bit light (would have appreciated some mixed greens or something to bulk it up, but the flavours melded well and I really appreciated the innovation of the dish.
Ellen M
Food was definitely much too overpriced for what you get on the plate. We ordered a starter (matcha matcha tofu) and two mains to share. The portions are decent however the food was far too average to justify the price. We got charged an extra $5.50 for one tiny slice of tofu, which I think is totally unreasonable. I’m all for supporting vegan restaurants however they need to reconsider their prices and adjust their menu.
Angel Khong
Definitely one of my favourite (vegetarian) restaurants. Had avocado magic/croquettes chinamoon and saffron polenta/satay shakahari - every element in each meal was flavourful, fresh, and simply delicately delicious! Friendly staff, lovely cozy venue. Highly recommend.
Hungry Ronin
Simply brilliant. Has the best tempeh I've had outside of Indonesia. The papaya salad makes an amazing starter with perfect balance of sweet, sour and spicy. The tom yum dumpling was on the lighter note and was cowardly forgettable in taste, however the green laksa and cheesecake was a crescendo that ended the meal on a high note. Superb service from start to finish is not unnoticed. A class act in vegetarian dining.
H
Definitely glad I listened to the reviews and tried the avocado magic. It was my favourite dish. The tofu caramel is like a vegan creme caramel and had a lovely light, subtly ginger sauce.
Abhinav Khandelwal
We get to this restaurant by luck. A very good vegetarian restaurant which serves Asian fusion cuisine. We had choose from their luch menu which has some light luch menu.
Curry was tasteful with authentic Thai style. Salad cut with style and were tossed in nice sauce.
All in all they have very well managed to make vegetarian food delicious in Melbourne.
An Antelope
The green laksa was a delicious bowl full of delightful surprises. The matcha tofu unfortunately tasted quite bland. The staff here make you feel very welcome, and I had a lovely night here with friends. Most of the dishes that were ordered were complimented.
There is a cakeage of $2 per person, which is to be understood as the kitchen cut the cake and a candle can be provided for those (like me) who come under-organised.
Merry Rourou
The food is nicer and different from other places, they have their own style and I really appreciate that! It was a full experience for non vegans (they discovered tempeh wooo!) nice and quiet place !
Tay Tee
Great service, generous meal servings, healthy and delicious! A menu with a variety of options but not overwhelming. We ordered the laksa, the lasagna, the spaghetti and croquettes, in which no one was disappointed! It was absolutely filling, wish I had room to try the desserts!

Had a business lunch here this week.
So tasty, fresh and impressive.
Attentive but unassuming service
Outstanding!! In particular the Satay was great as was the Shakahari salad.
Veggin' Around
Lovely little Asian Fusion restaurant on Clarendon st. Place was practically empty when we came, so I can't tell you what it's like when busy but the waiters were very attentive. We came here in search of good vegan food and that's what we found. Warning to patrons who aren't big on spice, be aware that most things had either a little or large kick to them! I loved it but my partner was a bit on the fence. All-in-all the place was nice and I liked its down to earth atmosphere, not too stuffy!
Sib
Food was good, most of it was a bit spicy so be aware. Avocado entree is definitely a go-to dish. Overall good experience and no issues whatsoever
Adele W
I have been here twice, once with friends and once with family. On both occasions the party was full of omnivores, however everyone found something on the menu they enjoyed! The menu is quite adventurous, with lots of interesting asian flavours.

One of the best vegetarian restaurant in town!!! Their Avo fritters are to die for!!Must go place. Loved the capsicum sauce too. Would definitely go again.
Eat To Live
What a beautiful meal. I can't really explain how nice it was! You must try this place if you are vegan or vegetarian. The avocado entree was amazing. Will definitely go back. Friendly service, clean restaurant and great meals 😍

After some fantastic eating at Shakahari, I was extra keen to check out their newest location in Clarendon Street of South Melbourne. Shakahari Too is somewhat hidden away with a venue that is surprisingly tranquil and peaceful once you step inside. We ended up feeling relaxed and we were treated to a meal befitting of the quality of its sister store. As such, it’s one worth checking out especially for vegetarians of which the menu is fully.
RubenTheGoodGuy
Been here a couple of times and overall had a really pleasant experience. The food is healthy, vegan friendly and tasty, and there are lots of different options. The coconut ice-cream is really good here, haven't had better.
Loz Arthur
Fantastic food!! For a purely vegan menu, Shakahari Too does extremely well! Ordered the red vs white with quinoa, chickpeas and veggie stew. Really good flavours! Also tried the laksa and was definitely the winner of the night! Only thing that it lost out on was the atmosphere. Could do with abit of a decor makeover. Staff were great so overall a great experience.
Kim
Amazing food! Everything is so delicious...and pretty too! My friend and I shared the satay skewers, croquettes, caramel tofu and vegan cheesecake. Service is great, didn't wait long at all and the people are lovely. Will definitely return. Only small downside is I found the desserts a little pricey.
Bothead
Had the Flat bread Around and the Mushroom Walnut Agnolotti and a Lassi. Very nice, great mix of flavours. Very nice food with warm, friendly service.
VegoLover
Been to the Carlton restaurant a few times and have always enjoyed eating there.
Finally tried the sister restaurant and was really disappointed.
Ordered lasagne which looked appetizing but it was really dry with too much mashed peas and mushrooms and not enough sauce. The dish was not flavorsome and the side potato wedges and carrots were burnt and dried out.
My friends had the satay signature dish and laksa which they enjoyed.
Melbourniancritic (The Melbourne Experience)
Serving a deliciously innovative vegetarian menu designed to be balanced, nutritious & appealing to even the most stubborn of meat eaters. Full review on: melbourniancritic.com.au/shakahari-too-vegetarian-restaurant-south-melbourne

The food. Oh God the food! In our second bite of the Shakahari Too experience my vegetarian and I took to the tables with anticipation, as our Shakahari experiences to date have been wonderous.

Entree this evening was the mushroom and walnut agnolotti with a tamarind soy glaze and chilli oil. Words will not work to convey the taste, come and try it yourself. Now.

Then, there was the Laksa. Let me be clear. I... dislike... Laksa. A lot. Quite a lot. Now though? I would happily come back and demolish this dish a couple of times a week. I even liked the tempeh in it. I hate tempeh. But here it was just another level of flavour in a subtle and elegant combination of awesomeness with just the right chilli afterburn.

The other entree was the Matcha Matcha, with delicious pickled veg and a subtle matcha sauce. Our second main was the Red meets White quinoa and chickpea dish. Quite dry and chewy beside the Laksa God at our table, but still appetising.

Enough said. Book early, book often.
Nice tasty food, no mock meat (thank God). The place has a suburban, local feel. Depending on your individual financial circumstances, not really a place you'd duck into on an ordinary night after a long day at work.

Service and atmosphere: Nice! Been here at a quite Sunday night. Staffs are quite attentive!

Food: Entree- matcha matcha tofu, I have to say it is somewhat flavorless. I would expect a strong taste of green tea.

Main: Green green Laska and Lasagna, both are quite nice and filling! Especially for the lasagna, full of flavor!
Will come back to try their valued lunch set!

Following the brilliant reviews below for Shakahari Too, I wanted to experience the marvel.

To be completely fair, this is one of very few designated vegetarian restaurant I have visited. If this is the best in Melbourne, then - to put in professional terms - we are ***.

Green Papaya entrée - albeit tasty, the one and only flavour to come out of it is sweet. Candy-level sweet.

Tofu Sensibility entreé - not entirely sure what this was, more than anything it reminded me of a tasteless Flan. A fat little piglet as I am I could not bring myself to consume this one.

Green Laksa main - was actually nice, but much like all of the food tried this evening, flavour-wise not taken all the way to fulfil its potential.

Croquettes Quinoa main - you'd probably do better with Fry's variety.

It wasn't bad. It just wasn't good. And for what it was, it was fairly expensive.

Service was very lovely, and only due to that, I feel bad writing this review.
Comfort vegetarian food meets a little bit fancy....this is more a special occasion place as the prices are high for vegetarian food. That said the food that I had was delicious....mushroom soup served at molten lava temperature was delicious once palatable. Veggie lasagne hearty and very tasty.... dumplings waaaaay too expensive for what they were and I'm not sure what the flavorless broth was doing on the plate so I would give them a miss. Others have reported the avocado chips are to die for:) happy plant eating ppl👍
Simon
Best vegetarian food I have ever tasted. I constantly find myself craving their croquettes! Excellent service with very welcoming staff. Great experience
Julycheee
True it's probably some of the best vegetarian food around (without trying to pull off "fake meat" and all that). It's also nice that each dish is labelled vegan/non-dairy/gluen-free for those with certain dietary requirements. The food features a lot of Asian flavour influences - think spicy, ginger, lemongrass, coconut... Being a picky eater I found some of these too much. But the dishes were interesting and filling, albeit a tad expensive.
Julian
Best Vegetarian restaurant in Melbourne.

This restaurant is the sister to Shakahari in Carlton. It's not open as frequently but it's less busy and equally as tasty. There's an amazing menu of always delicious vegetarian items. The service is excellent and you always feel taken care of. Not once have I had a less than exceptional experience here in my life. If you're vegetarian or vegan or just partial to this type of cuisine it's simply a must. Try the 'Satay Shakahari' their signature dish. Totally mind blowing.

If vegetarian tasted this good more often, I would become one! We started with the Avocado Magic entree and it was such a surprising blend of avocado, capsicum, eggplant complemented by a coriander/sesame puree. The Green Laksa had an amazing mix of textures and was made complete by a creamy, coconut broth. I tried my friend's Satay Shakahari and it was scrumptious. Attentive and pleasant service and a great place for a casual dinner.
Moni | Thoughts Of A Moni
The restaurant we chose was Shakahari Too. I was actually pretty keen to try this place, given that I had only ever been to the original Shakahari in Carlton, which has become a vegetarian stalwart in Melbourne.
We all had varying degrees of hunger, so we decided to order individually rather than share. Some of us ordered entrees, some entrees and mains, and some had their eye on dessert too! Surprisingly, I opted for just the main, but with so much food on the table, it meant that I got to hear the opinions on lots of items! Some of my friends had also just discovered that I was a food blogger, so they were very obliging, letting me take photos of everything before they started eating!
Moni | Thoughts Of A Moni
The Carlton branch of Shakahari is a bit of a stalwart of vegetarian restaurants in Melbourne, so I was keen to try this new branch. The menu is quite similar to the original, with a few additions. The decor is lovely, the staff are friendly, and as expected, the food was delicious. It is a little bit pricey, but the taste makes up for it. I had a laksa (because a true vego laksa is hard to find) and it was amazing, lots of flavour and very warming! I'll definitely be back!
Pickycat
Amazing variety of flavours. Don't miss meat at all when cooking is this good. Avocado magic is a must. Dumplings were delicious too. Staff are very friendly. Can't wait to go back again soon.
Amrita
Great friendly service, but we found the portions very small for the price. Good flavours, some dishes better than others. Overall the food is fresh and tasty, but not anything too remarkable.
Believeinyourself
This restaurant offers a small range of yummy vegan options. Whilst some dishes are a standout, others were a bit of a miss. They do have great healthy food items, asian inspired, from tofu, curries, salads. The potato quinoa patties were overloaded with potato, the silken tofu was very one flavoured, but others ike the tempeh tofu sticks (we substituted the seitan to make it GF) were delicious with the peanut sauce, and the tofu brulee was a sweet treat. Overall, good efforts all around to the staff and chef.
Mommyinmelbourne
Amazing vegetarian food, in fact clearly the best vegetarian restaurant I have been to in Melbourne. The food is great in taste and quality however the pricing is tad expensive and the ambience is mediocre. But a must try, very innovative menu, charming staff and extremely delicious food.
Amulya Merit
Awesome Food!. This place is just as good as their twin in Carlton

One word : delicious! !!. Unlike any other vegetarian cuisine I have ever tried.
The flavours and combinations made for a delightful evening. Highly impressed and would recommend it in half a heart beat ;)
Mon's Adventure
There’s no mock meats here, so don’t expect that, but expect some flavoursome and creative vegetarian food. I’ll be trying more vegetarian places this month, but feel free to provide suggestions for next month’s event and theme!

The menu was unique, with each dish more intriguing than the next. For entree - the Tofu Sensibility. On a warm ceramic plate, each round tofu sat comfortably with a yolk of chili lemongrass vinagrette and sprinkle of pickled seaweed. Lying underneath each, was a succulent portion of oyster mushroom. Each tofu alternated between hot and cold, adding to the senses. Next, came the Straits Biriani. A colourful and spice sensation consisting of fragrant lemongrass and brown Basmati rice, warm and smoky baked vegetables, cashew and raisin chutney and a flake of pappadum. I loved the brown Basmati and the authenticity of the dish. Our second main dish to share was the Lasagne Now. Layers of spina

In my experience, there appears to be two types of vegetarian food – the faux ‘meats’ (or meat imitations), or genuinely tasty vegetables that are well prepared and beautifully flavored. I’m a bigger fan of the latter, which is what we found here. I can’t say it can compare to the deliciousness of Vegie Bar, but if you want to try something different, somewhere a bit more quiet and with shorter queues (or the option of booking, for that matter!), I would recommend this place...for anyone – not just vegetarians. Pretty darned good.
Madam Boots
Very wow healthy good for you food. I really enjoyed myself here. The staff were nice, the food was pretty good. The pricing very reasonable.
The stand out dish was the eggplant/ avocado fritters, really has to be seen to be believed. It's so flavoursome and crispy.

The mains were somewhat hit and miss, mostly hits, but still a few misses...
The quinoa patties were crunchy and flavoursome, but nothing special.... too much potato.
The tofu platter, with mixtures of different textures and satay sauce was divine.

Yeah, I will have to come back to try some of the other dishes on offer. Very unique and original.

Fabulous food!. This place has absolutely delicious food! We were visiting Melbourne from interstate and decided to give this place a go after seeing the menu online. We were not disappointed! The food was amazing! I am vegetarian and my partner is vegan and we both found dishes we were really happy with. I had Avocado Magic, Mushroom Agnolotti, and Tofu Caramel. They were all great, but I particularly enjoyed the Avocado Magic.
Mr. Brunch
Thumbs up. Had dinner last night with my partner who's a vegetarian. Being a carnivor, it would be hard to please me without meat. however this place did. the food and service was fantastic. each dish was superb. must try the avacado magic and Tokyo something entrees. we will be back.

Best Restaurant in Melbourne!. Best cuisine and service in Melbourne. I can't say enough good things about this Restaurant.
The food is to die for and the manager and wait staff are all such lovely people.
If all restaurants were like this nobody would go near meat again! We love that they stand for something and practice it.
We can't wait for our next meal at Shakahari Too.
Monkey Man
Great vegetarian food. Been here a few times and can't fault it!
Food is excellent!
Service great!
Value brilliant!

Note that we find an entree and main is maybe too much for each person as food is plentiful, as dishes are so tasty it's probably better to share anyway!

The menu is great for anyone that has dietary requirements, lots of gf or dairy free options.

Will be back and would highly recommend!
Lungs
Awesome meals! Huge and filling :)

Delicious.

Place could be a little warmer, patrons all kept their jackets on, but it's a small gripe considering the beautiful food :)
Laura
Enjoyed by a non-vegan. Fantastic service and even better food. Would recommend the Avocado Magic & Satay Shakahari.
Netty
Absolutely delicious meal. Fresh flavours and very creative meals. Wonderful to eat without onions and garlic for those of us who can't digest them. Friendly service as well. Highly recommend . So yummy.

Great place. I had a dinner with my husband yesterday evening. Food was great. Specially sauces, spices combinations. When I go to a restaurant, if I like the food "yeah it was nice..Which restaurant should I try next"..But when I was eating there I was " woow..When are we coming back again?" I am looking forward to go there again.
Siobhanmbailey
Amazing choice!. Having had dinner here we are so impressed with the food, so amazing to have so much vegan and veg choice with tasty fresh food and lovely ingredients.
The staff were really lovely and friendly and the atmosphere is casual yet pleasant.
We really enjoyed the polenta and the avocado tempura starters, delicious Italian secret and the tofu caramel was also a great choice.

Would definitely recommend to veggies and non veggies alike to come here an have an amazing, fulfilling and healthy meal :)

Yum. Not usually into hipster, vegan, raw etc... But this place makes it easy to stomach. In fact the only hipsters were the staff. Food was incredibly satisfying, portion sizes slightly too large, but who can really complain about that. Service was great, meals came out quickly.
Windmillersd
Disappointed. My daughter is vegetarian so I thought this was the perfect place to take her after exams. I brought a bottle of wine but was told by the owner that unless it was a special bottle I could not use it. He continued to say that selling wine was necessary for them to make money. Although I understand this, nowhere on the website does it indicate that you can't BYO and the meals are not cheap so I am sure they can still make a good living regardless. The owner then asked me a number of times if I wanted a drink. I did not buy a glass of wine so he didn't achieve anything except some resentment. The meals were good but the menu very limited. The decor is nice but the evening left me slightly uncomfortable and I would hesitate to go back.

My husband and I have recently become vegetarians! We have searched high and low for a great restaurant to suit our needs and we have found it!!! Shakahari Vegetarian is the best!!! #1!!! I never review on Urban Spoon, but this place is worth reviewing!
Shitake
Excellent vegetarian. Had the avocado magic and tofu for entrees, and then the quinoa croquettes and laksa for mains. The avocado and quinoa croquettes were standouts.

Dishes were uncomplicated, fresh and flavoursome. Decent value. Would return and recommend to vegetarians and carnivores alike.
J
I'm not a vegan by any means, but I think this place is good. Had the chestnut dumplings and the pasta dish, which were so so tasty. I can't specify a particular cuisine, because it ranged from dumplings to lasagne, but there's lots of variety.
Renee Mead
I love Shakahari, the food is always delicious. Every dish I've had is loaded with fresh, distinct flavours and I've tried nearly all of them!
Dahlstrom AnnaKarin
I loved this place! The dishes are unique and exciting and very tasty, the service was graceful. The highlight after a beautiful meal was the dessert! Pistachio ice cream and black rice and sago pudding with spices and banana!!! Yum!!!

First timer did well. Went to dinner on 25th may 2013 with my son and his girlfriend, who are vegan her mum and friend came as well as my husband we are all not vegetarian or vegan .it was upto me to find a restaurant so went and googled vegan friendly restaurant , saw the reviews for Shakahari Too in Sth Melbourne thought this sounds good, well they were right what wonderful flavours my son and his girlfriend just loved everything about this restaurant . The service was outstanding all the food was beautifully presented . The Birani was very very nice what flavour . So the 4 non veggies said a big thumbs up! And the 2 vegans are bringing there friends here. I say try it you will be pleasantly surprised , thank you for such a loverly meal.
VeggieGirl
AMAZING!. Such great food!! Went for lunch yesterday, was my third visit there and have never been disappointed, the food is mouth watering combinations, nice atmosphere and delicious organic wine!
Nathan
Awesome vego! Get the laksa it will rock your socks!
Mouthful
Worth going vego for. Until recently, I thought vegetarian food was good food with something missing. If you still think like that and need convincing otherwise, check this place out.

The flavours are inventive and the food leaves you satisfied.

It's what I guess you'd call a Thai fusion place (run by the people who own the Isthmus of Kra) - they have this lasagna which rocks my socks off.

And the pandan cheesecake. The pandan cheesecake!! It leaves me lost for words.
Karina
Lovely food, but the ambiance needs a little work. We went there for Valentine's Day and were a bit surprised that the lights were on full strength and there was no music-it felt more cafeteria style than a restaurant. We did find a small enclave on the second floor that offered a little more feeling to it, so head upstairs.
The food was excellent, fresh, inventive, and not cheap. The service was good, maybe a little slow, but friendly.
With a few tweaks to the place it could be really high class and really give the food the environment it deserves.

This was easily the most beautiful food I have ever eaten. Light, flavoursome, creative mix of ingredients and healthy!

You don't miss the meat!. It was a risk taking five non vegetarians to a vegetarian restuarant but with fond memories of the Carlton restaurant from a decade ago still haunting my tastebuds I couldn't resist when we had to be in South Melbourne for dinner. It was a hit! Everyone loved what they ordered and I think more than one will be wanting to return (wondering how to convince others that meat isn't necessary for a wonderful meal). I only wish we had time to order dessert before our show started....the orange chocolate dessert sounded amazing. Service was lovely as well and we were made very welcome and we were accommodated without trouble with late arrivals and a must leave time to get to our next stop. Brilliant all round really.

If you think healthy, organic, fresh ingredients with a genius chef putting together eclectic tastes then you might be able to imagine the wonders of this new site which following the wonderful mother ships in Faraday St Carlton and the equally super Isthmus of Kra in Park St South Melbourne there is a winning trifecta and not by chance.
Treat yourself

Marvellous. It's about time tasty, healthy, gourmet cuisine made it's way over to South Melbourne.

I've eaten at the new Shakahari three times now. The food is excellent, cocktails delicious (and only $12!), staff friendly, warm and attentive.

If you have ever wanted to try fine vegetarian cuisine make your way here for signature dishes like Avocado Magic and many more. Yum!

SHAKAHARI TOO!. Shakahari has built a big reputation for offering a purely vegetarian menu that everyone will enjoy. Not just vegetarians, but all who like healthy modern food. And that over the last 40 (yes, forty!) years from its base in cosmopolitan Carlton. So I was more than happy to try this 2012 version of Shakahari here on the other side of the Yarra.
The beverage (not just wine) list was a good beginning. There were twenty moderately priced wines, all available by the glass as well as by the bottle, all boasting organic qualifications. But it was the bigger range of teas from T2, and the non-alcoholic drinks that took my eye. My choice was a “Jade Tonic” of wheatgrass, lime and apple juice. Immediately I could taste those strong clean, clear flavours for which Shakahari is known. This was an “apple drink” like none I have tasted before.
The number of entre dishes was another surprise: seven in all. It looked as though you could make a meal by choosing one or more of those alone. Just one would do for lunch, I guessed. I chose “Tofu Sensibility”, an imaginative dish of silken tofu pieces, oyster mushrooms and spinach that had been dressed with a chilli lemongrass vinaigrette. Grilled in a terracotta plate this dish was as visually exciting as it was to taste, with six small lids to lift to discover the Thai tastes of its organic tofu.
“Straits Biriani” was a main dish that showed just how unique this menu is and how very wide its appeal would be. Biriani is a much-loved North Indian rice dish, usually featuring chicken or beef. Here the chef has used Cajun-styled baked vegetables with brown Basmati rice and allows you to mix a raisin and cashew chutney with it to suit your own taste. A dish like this, the menu signalled (as it did for all its items), passed the vegan, non-diary, and gluten-free tests.
I was torn between the “Steamed chocolate orange pudding”, “Tofu caramel” or the “Fruit crumble” for dessert but ended up choosing a slice of “Pandan coconut cheesecake”. Shakahari’s vegetarians, in my experience, really kick up their heels when it comes to desserts.
I expected a heady mix of artwork, good interior design, and informal comfort at the new restaurant and was not disappointed. Its spectacular street-art murals, the hand-crafted re-cycled wooden tables, and the high-quality presentation of the food made for a memorable introduction to “Shakahari [too]”. I’ll be back for more.

All of the materials are good quality and I was told most of them are organic too. Moreover all of the staffs are very friendly and handy in doing the services. One of the highlight that time was he waiter asked whether we are going to have the dishes shared or not and we gave her a “yes”. They set everything properly and promptly for sharing style dining, even the laksa came separately in two bowls with pretty presentation for both of them. I don’t know whether or not another restaurant do the same thing but it was my first experience of being treated that way.
Every hipster and their fixie opts for a vegetarian diet these days, so I thought I’d share my favourite vegetarian restaurants in Melbourne.

Not always a popular suggestion to hit a vegetarian restaurant but if you ever had any doubts Shakahari Too should help clear them! This is such a gorgeous place and after an amazing meal we left without any question of missing meat!! The menu is a mouth watering list of fantastic dishes like Tofu Sensibility! Hidden under their little clay hats is organic silken tofu with oyster mushrooms, spinach and mild chilli lemongrass vinaigrette – IT IS SENSATIONAL!! Avocado Magic!! Avocado, red peppers rolled in eggplant and tempura fried with a light coriander and sesame dressing!! YUM!!! Croquettes Quinoa are amazing with mashed yam, potato, macadamia, turnip and black quinoa – amazing!!! Green Green Lakso – Japanese udon noodles, spinach, mushrooms, beansprouts, tofu and tempeh with fragrant herbs and basil green curry coconut stock. Sensational!! Such a great place and such great food…… who needs meat!!

I wasn’t that enthusiastic about the main dishes that we had here… but I have to admit that the desserts at Shakahari were great.
