I've been here many times since discovering this hidden gem! The staff are friendly & the food is delicious! The location is really central but also really chilled and relaxing ! Highly recommend!
Whenever we come to Melbourne to visit, we always make a beeline to Hot Poppy. Jodie and her hardworking team give great service and make great chow. Always have the Full English which comes with extra touches like pork chipolatas with pan fried onion, plus a sticky dipping sauce, proper mushrooms, taters, awesome sourdough, eggs any way you like, top draw bacon and tomatoes. Got chocolate served with marshies and whilst I don’t drink Java, my partner says the coffee is good. Next time I must try the Cuban sandwich, but somehow always get pulled back to Hot Poppy’s breakfasts! Wish Hot Poppy was in Adelaide..
Great coffee and fantastic breakfast. Lots of great choices of cheeses with their morning breakfast menu.
We try lots of breakfast place’s and always come back to you. Thanks you 👌🏼
Great dirty chai, AMAZING FOOD , sweets to die for !!! SENSATIONAL SERVICE highly reasonable price is totally make this my regular brunch venue or lunch or early Dinner was just sooo good
We've been coming to this place since we came across last year by chance!! A good place to have a quick bite when you're in North Melbourne!!
I cannot go without visiting Hot Poppy every time I visit Melbourne
Great atmosphere great food great coffee and great people
Personal service with a smile
Friendly staff, great food and a lovely pot of chai tea
Whenever we have the chance to be in North Melbs for Breakfast we never fail to go past Hot Poppy. The coffee is great, the eggs are always spot on as well as the buttered toast!
Just had my second brunch at Hot Poppy and it gets my first ever 10/10. I think I'm in love... Fluffy buttermilk pancakes, bourbony maple syrup, slivers of dried apricot, apricot candy, pistachios and vanilla ice cream with a side of maple bacon. The combination and contrast of crunchy and creamy, salty and sweet was absolutely perfect.
I have been going to Hot Poppy for over 10 years and it never fails to deliver. Great coffee and food with their breakfasts superb.
Have been here several times now and have had awesome meals & service each time. Highly recommend it
Lovely coffee and great food. Quick service and a warm atmosphere.
Chilled and relaxing, with great coffee, what more could I ask for. I look forward to coming here every week.
Great food , awesome staff and a welcoming atmosphere. Get down there now if not sooner !
Really loved this place. Came with a friend and it’s a beautiful environment to be in. Staff were very friendly and made sure we were looked after. Would highly recommend toastier!
Great little cafe service was wonderful and we were greeted with a warm welcome and food was delicious, it’s a little too small inside but this makes it cosy. Will be back 😊
Love love love The Hot Poppy!!
Always great service and yummy food.
Full English is very filling and tasty.
Corn and Zucchini fritters are delicious
Coffee outstanding
If you haven’t been, go asap you won’t be disappointed
Ordered the granola and porridge. Both very pleasing, fresh and delicious!
Loved the pear in the granola! Without that pear, the granola would’ve been bland.
Staff were lovely and attentive.
Take your lover, friends and family here for great brunch dishes.
With a recommendation from a friend we came here for brunch and found the food pretty good although the wait was long.
Luckily it wasn't too busy on a Saturday morning so we got a table easily inside but as mention it took a while for it to come out.
My husband and I shared the pulled pork Benedict and I tried their mushroom dish with crumbed egg (which I enjoyed). I did find the mushroom dish a bit too salty. My son enjoyed his scrambled eggs with fresh bread which was quite nice. We also ordered a side of haloumi to try.
Staff were friendly and it was worth a try.
We were overwhelmed with the choices on the menu, but both opted for toasties. With the addition of fries, these were really filling meals (and I was unable to finish, oops). Fries were good. The Mauby Cubano was so delicious - cheesy, a good balance of meat and lots of contrasting crunch and acidity. The 12-hr lamb toastie was too dry and too bland though because of high ratio of lamb. I wished there was some melted cheese, or the slaw wasn't so bland and dry... something to help with all the meat. Overall, enjoyed our meal and would be happy to return!
Awesome brunch place with delicious food and friendly staff. The Swiss mushroom was quite spectacular. The setting is also great. Good for groups with ample outdoor seating. Had a great time with family here.
Sensational Sunday breakfast. I was nearly defeated by the sheer size of the vege breakfast. It was delicious to boot and the coffee was bracing to say the least. Service was great. On a street filled with food options, this one is highly recommended
The Gluten-Free Foodie

Delicious mixed mushroom salad. Nice interior of the cafe, bustling with workers and noise. Tables and settings were nice but agree with some other reviewers that the 'casual' nature of the staff verged on unprofessional/showing too much personality.
I had a really yummy omellete made especially for me here, and the coffee is lovely. Quite a big layout, so not as intimate as you'd like, but still nice.
Delicious brekkie. Quick service. Good coffee. A little on the expensive side food wise. Ordered the veggie brekkie and the maple bacon and didn't get much change from $50.
Best coffee on Errol St. Relaxed service. Delicious food at reasonable prices. The soups are GREAT!! This place is becoming a favourite of mine.
Picked a winner here. Great smooth coffee accompanied a pretty much perfect poached egg dish. Sour dough with a light smear of pesto piled with heirloom and baby tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, and a couple of poached eggs garnished with mint that add that little bit extra flavour punch to the mouthful. Seriously delicious.
Great casual atmosphere and ambience backed with a genuinely affable bro makes for all boxes ticked.
Terrific brunch spot. I had the brisket breakfast burger.
The brisket was divine. Would highly recommend
Service is also very good.
Coffee is great but could be a little hotter
Dropped by for a casual Sunday brunch #brunchforlife. My usual soy latte was on point! And I've never seen someone down a latte as quick as my partner in crime, so you know that was great!! We ordered the Eggs Benny, the brunch classic, and the French Toast. The Eggs Benny was perfect, with a gooey yolk and that Hollandaise generously doused over the crumpets! The French Toast, a hedonists dream, was sugary, nuttellary and topped with fairy floss - so basically a sugary delight. I would recommend a visit (Also their toastie range looked tantilising!)
Located at the far end of Errol Street, near Victoria Street, this café features a very distressed wooden façade of columns and arches, and large glass panes, and a rickety wooden door, harking back to an earlier era. The food is very good, the servings generous and well presented. I popped in one morning and had the Veggie Bonanza breakfast, which was tasty and filling, and the coffee was not bad either. The interior is also a time capsule with period timber furniture, wooden cabinets, old ceiling fans, etc, a bit like a 1930s grocery store. The service was welcoming and attentive, the ambience quaint, and the meal was very nice.
Casual little spot to hang out with friends & catch up for coffee over a bowl of fries. This cute little place has nice staff & if your in to patting pooch's, many people take their furry friends for a walk down Errol St and sit down at hot poppy for a refresher ( this is your chance to make friends with said doggo )
Not a bad little joint friends.
Great eclectic menu, awesome coffee and delicious food. The maple bacon and avocado with grilled tomato and goats cheese is wonderful. Lovely wait staff too.
Great breakfast! The fritters are delicious but quite rich and the eggs Benedict is always a good choice. The juice menu has some nice combinations. Staff are lovely and very attentive.
Had breakfast here the other day and it was tasty. Would definitely recommend. Forgot our chips but when we asked about them they quickly brought some to our table and didn't charge us for it. Make a decent cup of coffee too.
If there is something with mushroom on the menu, there is a 99% chance that I'm going to order it. So of course when I saw toastie with mushroom duxelle, caramelised onion, taleggio and mozzarella on the menu, I did just that. And I ordered fries because one set of carbs sometimes isn't enough at 11.30am. Really enjoyed both! The only thing I didn't enjoy was the open door letting in freezing cold air 😩
Came here without knowing what would be on the menu, and of course I caved into picking the eggs benedict, hollandaise sauce and ham. The food came out quickly and it was delicious! The yolk was runny and the crumpets were nice and crispy on the outside. It was also very affordable, a very nice cafe indeed!
Been wanting to come here for a whilebut was a little disappointed.
The coffee wasn't very good, service was ok.
Food was nice, except the chorizo was cooked until it was dry. Overall, very overpriced. Won't be visiting again anytime soon.
I've been going to the Hot Poppy for years as I once worked in the area. Coffee is usually great, especially the single origin. The place has a nice cosy feel to it and the tunes they play are great. I usually have poached eggs on toast and they are spot on. Staff are friendly and usually remember you. I haven't been for a while as I'm no longer working in the area. I'll try and get back one of these days.
I'm the guy that knocked over the vase about a week ago... So embarrassed... But I'll keep coming back for the good coffee, and hope you have that rhuben sandwich on the menu here again soon... :)
Found this place by chance this afternoon, on way to another cafe nearby. A couple of meals caught the eye, and the menu was large to the point of indecisiveness!
The pulled pork with hoisin was very tasty, the bread was the highlight but probably could've done without the cucumber (though I get the Vietnamese connection...). The fried chicken burger was a clear standout, the sauce was rich with flavour and the bun was a great tinge of brown - and soft!
Waiters here were extremely friendly, and would definitely come back if we're ever in the area again!
Place looked cool from the outside so decided to pop in for some brunch. Was not disappointed at all! Beautifully crafted meals and as tasty as you would like. Gotta say the meatballs were my favourite - fantastic flavours and the rich sauce was mouth watering. Loved mopping up the sauce with the side of bread. Definitely going back for more.
Happened to be walking by when food was being served and looked amazing, had to try for myself! Staff where great and meals where just fantastic... Wanted to taste everyone's meals around me.
Awesome place.. Had this mad meatball jaffle off the specials board and it was so dam tasty..heaps of variety for bfast and all look so tasty. Coffee was great too. I'm definitely coming back here :)
Only discovered how amazing the coffee is a few weeks ago, now I won't get coffee from anywhere else in Nth Melbourne. Yay I don't have to line up down the street.. Actually I lie.. Lining up for stuff is for jerks. Fresh juice is delicious too. Staff are bloody lovely as a bonus
After overlooking this cafe a while ago, we decided to have late breaky here since we were in the area - and we weren't disappointed. The hubs had the full English breakfast which comprises of poached eggs, mushies, golden cubes of potatoes and a slice of bread while I had the breakfast baguette - bacon, eggs, spinach and harissa. It comes with cheddar as well but I omitted it. Everything on the plate was delicious as well as the coffee. Next time we are in the area again, we'd definitely drop in again for a bite.
Have been going here regularly over the last few years, has always been a good experience and decent food - not spectacular food, but still good. Staff are always on the ball, quick to attend to you after being seated, and rare that there's a long delay in receiving your food after ordering.
Coffee was awesome ($3.8). Zucchini fritters ($16) are amazing! Lots of components in the dish and they all taste great together. Worth a try!
5 grain porridge ($11 on the menu, but i got charged $11.5, not sure why......) was so so. Texture is great but it wasnt sweet enough. I put a bit of the brown sugar served on the table and it tasted so much better. I think a bit of honey drizzled on top would be great.
Service was good and fast, but I really HATED paying a higher amount than whats stated on the menu. Fix up your menu please! It could be misleading!
Love this place! It's my go-to North Melbourne cafe. I moved to Melbourne knowing no-one, and everyone here welcomed me with open arms. I go in as much as I can, and quite frankly, don't go anywhere else in the area! I love the coffee, the food, the atmosphere and the staff are great!
Definitely one of my faves!
Another facet of Melbourne's noted coffee scene. Hot Poppy is on a great stretch of Errol Street. This is one of those places that typifies Melbourne cafe culture. It's full of cast iron awnings on the heritage buildings, trams clanking by, there are all sorts of stand-alone cafes/bakeries (OK, there’s a Ferguson-Plarre/Brumby’s too) and a mix of ethnic joints. But it's not all hipsters on the footpaths -- plenty of battlers from the low-income housing are pacing their hard yards here.
I had a pulled pork baguette that was a nice taste of fusion. The meat reminded me of wet saucy American pork barbeque, only it was seasoned with hoisin sauce. The crusty baguette, cilantro leaves and (too) thick slice of cucumber were an obvious nod to Vietnamese banh mi. Nice thin chips with it. There’s a good range of pastry, and Hot Poppy still had plenty to choose from late on a Sunday arvo. The Hot Poppy scene is as cool as anything on Bridge Road, Church Street, Hardware Lane or other trendier strips around Melbourne, IMHO.
Good place. Great coffee. Lovely eggs on toast, very pleasant staff.
One of the bast cafs in the area.
Great weekday morning spot when its not too busy.
Stands the test of time. Visited here today after not being in the area for many years. It is still a fabulous café with great food. Had a lovely lunch with friends catching up on old times. Will definitely return when i'm back in north melbourne
With the explosion of Melbourne cafe’s in alleyways, up an alleyway within an alleyway, cafes located on main streets can be overlooked. Hot Poppy is an Errol St staple. It may not have the ‘trendiest’ location, but the food is equally as good as any of its North Melbourne neighbours. The interior is trendy enough with faded wooden boards, ceiling-high cabinets and dangling industrial lights. In fact, the menu is positively huge for this cosy cafe.
The Baked Meatballs is the quintessential dish for cold weather, comforting, warm with oozy gooey cheese. The dish was a winner. The souffle omelette met its description, with exceptional fluffy eggs served with smashed avocado and salmon slices. Service is a tad slow, but a complicated menu takes time.
A cute little cafe up the quieter end of Errol St, Hot Poppy has been around since my uni days. I remember a friend quite excitedly cheering "Hot Poppy!" with a Japanese accent, when asked about where to go for breakfast. And indeed, their breakfast is quite good. I imagine that these days, with places like Fandango and Auction Rooms in the area, it's not quite so hard to get a table at Hot Poppy for a weekend breakfast, though I could be wrong. On this occasion, I stopped in for a working lunch with Mr A, at his suggestion. It was a blustery Winter's day outside, so I felt like some hearty soup. The soup of he day was a Moroccan chicken and lentil soup. Served with some warm Turkish bread, it was just the hit of heartiness I was after. The spices were used subtly, and balanced well with the tomato base. I thought it could have dealt with a little more chilli heat, but that's probably just me. I'm not sure Moroccan food is supposed to challe
This place does an amazing toastie! The waitress was lovely and really nice and the coffee went down nicely too. Wanted to try a juice but too full! Definitely come here again.
G'day bruzzies. After crackin a few Friday nighter tins, nothing beats a BLT at Hot Poppy. Crispy Bacon, tomato and lettuce tightly wedged between an onion bagel (much like Kanye's head between Kimmy K's cannons). 3.5/5 tins.
I just grabbed a coffee on the run. Cheap as, taste and temperature spot on, staff couldn't have been happier even though it was the end of the day.
Good, but not great..... Went for brunch on a Sunday morning with a friend. The service was efficient, although the lady serving us seemed to have her mind elsewhere (mixing up our orders, trying to charge us for the wrong meals at the end). I ordered the Veggie bonanza and a fruit and vege juice. The juice was outstanding, freshly made with fresh ingredients. Most of the individual components of the Bonanza were tasty, but the tomato relish killed the dish.... a sickly, overpoweringly strong, sour taste that engulfed all the beautiful mushrooms, tomatoes, beans and the other stuff on the plate.... such a shame, since the rest of the dish was great and the serving size was significant.
Overall, not a bad place for breakfast, but wouldn't be at the top of list for North Melbourne cafes.
Nice burgers. Has the southern chicken burger, was great. Girlfriend loved the wagyu burger
Great little cafe. Awesome cafe, very friendly staff, and great gluten free options. The price is also very reasonable.
Wagu beef burger is amazing, comes with lots of fries!
Underrated, consistent and still good value
Always a lovely place to be!! Service is excellent, atmosphere and quality of food is great. Appropriate pricing and just an all round lovely place for brunch and a coffee. Been here 10+ times and never a complaint
Good ambience. Went in to have breakfast, found good, eggs were cooked to perfection and brown sauce was yummy. Coffee had no complaints.
Great breakfast. Went in yesterday without seeing any reviews. I was in for breakfast and company was there for lunch. My breakfast was outstanding. I've been branching around north melbourne a lot lately and this simple full English breakky was easily up to the competition. The nachos were on par but nothing special.
Tried Hot Poppy for the first time today and everything was great. It was after the lunch rush so that probably helped with speediness. Staff were friendly, food came out promptly and was tasty. The Cuban toasted sandwich was awesome! No problems with service, and food was yummy and good value so I'll definitely be back.
Good food, good value. I am a local who visits at least twice a week. They make the best pot of Chai I have had anywhere. Jodie is always cheerful and I have to contradict some of the other reviews. On occasions we haven't even had to order our drinks as the wait staff either see us coming down the street or see us sitting down and have our drinks out to the table very quickly. There are lots of locals here who are known by their name and they are greeted accordingly. The food is excellent and good value for money. There are interesting specials. Yes there are lots of cafes in North Melbourne which may be considered trendier. I have tried many of them and keep coming back to Hot Poppy. I never hesitate to take my visitors there.
We love going to the hot poppy! We go every weekend for brekky and its always good. They have seemed to have had some staffing issues lately but it's gotten a lot better lately, and Jody the owner is always lovely to us. The food is also getting better and better. You can wait for it if they are super busy, but its worth the wait. Love the organic heirloom tomatoes and the croque madam.
Tall Poppy on Erroll. We go here often and never had a bad experience. The breakfast is good, the service is efficient and they always have something new on the specials board. Try the freshly squeezed juices on a hot day. One of our favourite places in North Melbourne.
Delicious coffee. Nice people :)
Absolutely delightful! Chill vibes, friendly Staff and the food… amazing!
On warm days it’s really nice to sit outside, watch the people walk by and to enjoy your meal.
The Reuben toastie (16$) is nice and crunchy on the outside, and generously filled, delicious.
Their flat white is great too (as almost always in Melbourne).
If you dine in you get a free bottle of water. :)
Randomly stumbled across this place and let me say, it was such a beautiful surprise. Awesome food, great coffee and great service. The photo may look basic, but the flavours weren’t, making a simple breakfast absolutely delicious.
Small cozy breakfast place with solid menu that's not too dependent on egg dishes. Coffee was on the small side, but very nice and made well. Great for a morning brunch with couples or friends, not overly child friendly.
Eggs Benedict with hash is my go to dish. Probably one of the best ones I have tasted in the area. Good eggs, crisp hash and really nice creamy luscious sauce.
Absolutely delicious food! Perfect coffee. Cannot wait to return
Gotta get behind a place that has not one but two soup specials in the Melbourne winter! We tried the Morrocan chickpea and lentil soup and it was incredibly satisfying with a rich taste of saffron.
The toasted sandwiches here are yummy, as are the fries. My favourite is the Halloumi cheese toastie! For breakfast, the eggs Benedict is a winner! Service is always good 👍
nice place to do breakfast / brunch
eclectic waiters which seems to work well with clientelle
can be quite cold in cooler months with not so good heating indoors
Luckily it has lots of gas heaters outdoors :)
Good vegetarian and vegan options. Good coffee:)
