Dish is a lovely restaurant with courteous and knowledgeable waiting staff and a great lunch special for $35! Chefs are accommodating with allergies too.
I've been a couple of times for lunch with work friends and the food is top quality.
My order consisted of the minute steak with mashed potato for mains and banana and brioche pudding for dessert. Also a lovely glass of Shiraz Cabernet to go with the steak.
Very enjoyable and I highly recommend visiting!
Lovely restaurant. The restaurant is so flexible, courteous and the food is delicious. I had the snapper and the chips are to die for. Thoroughly recommend it. The pasta was also good
I’ve been to several incarnations of this place. Always a great meal, friendly and attentive service and a top notch wine selection.
Would always take the opportunity to have a meal here.
Can't speak highly enough of this restaurant. Some gorgeous dishes, delicious pastas in particular and some desserts that are definitely insta worthy! I'm always skeptical of restaurants that are part of hotels, but this one has the goods. Great lunch deals and amazing service with a smile too!
I don't understand why this place has an average rate. Our team at work came here for lunch and we had the lunch special. Food was tasty, wine was great, and the price was perfect! I am keen to go back to this place with my partner. 😊
Excellent service and food. We could t have asked for a better lunch. Really appreciate that the restaurant caters for vegetarians- lots of options and flexibility- puts some other little cal restaurants to shame.
Couldn't fault the snapper i ordered, perfectly cooked with broccoli, mash and lemon. Simple food done well, but beware of the pricetag. Also if you're wanting foodie delights with surprise combinations, this isn't the place. It's great for a classy meal and lovely service.
Buffet breakfast at The Dish this morning. Standard selection of items with small quantities on offer but were regularly refreshed. Sausages were very tasty with a little kick to them.
Cereal selection was ok but the granola was the pick of the crop.
Staff were very nice. Friendly but professional.
Tried spaghettini and grilled chicken there in two separate occasions. Both are good and enjoyable. Nice place with good atmosphere, plus it's not far from my work place.
The restaurant is part of the lovely Royce Hotel on at kilda rd. A good fine dining restaurant. Servings were quite reasonable- we had an entertainment book with a free main. Staff were friendly and very efficient. Great place for lunch or dinner!
Seven of us went for dinner, but it didn't seem busy for a Saturday night. The decor was simple but modern and the atmosphere would have been better if the restaurant was busier. The food was quite good, but not outstanding and quite pricey for what you got. One member of our group complained that her steak was cold which didn't get a great reception from one of the waiters but another waiter brought it back at a suitable temperature.
We fared a lot better with desserts which were well presented and quite scrumptious. It didn't take long for us to devour them.
All in all it was a bit of a mixed bag with some great highlights.
...linguine and hand crushed pesto, free range chicken, Swiss Browns (brown mushrooms, but please, you can just call them browns) & Sovrano (a parmesan cheese made in Italy out of buffalo milk). Along with a side of broccolini with goats fetta & lemon, french fries, finished off with a cappauccino. Pure bliss on my first nigh
XMAS LUNCH IN THE BALL ROOM. WOW we had done the CBD Marriot last 3 years and felt like a change
So glad we did will book again for next year
Only complaints no prawns and no name badges for wait staff,so we could not dress them by name
Exceptional selection of options all of the ones we tried table of 6 everyone was raving about how good the produce was especially considering it was a buffet
Well done guys
A great culinary experience!. I need only keep this short, great food, atmosphere, service and above all; satisfying to all of our senses. A great night out, great hotel, terrific bar. Couldn't rate it higher nor would i have altered the experience in the slightest.
Dined at this restaurant by chance (was driving past and hungry!). Great choice! Service was great, good very fresh and delicious. Great place to dine!
Diana. Comfortable, clean & friendly place to have breakfast. We had the continental buffet as part of the hotel package deal. All the food was fresh & good quality

+4.5
Lovely restaurant as part of a beautiful hotel. Very attentive staff and surprisingly offers a wide range of great wine selections. Chef Leigh has definitely done a great job on putting together the menu. Will be back for more, perhaps to try the $35 2Course & a glass of wine lunch special.
Surprisingly Good Restaurant. The Dish at Royce Hotel is a surprise in a slightly odd location in an old pub, it is a good restaurant. I went there with friends for lunch and was impressed.
1. Restaurant and Decor - The restaurant is a gentrified part of an old pub. It has been modernised tastefully and the resulting decor works well as a quality restaurant background and operating environment.
2. Service - The service was excellent. Attentive and discreet as well as prompt and effective. The wine issue was extremely well handled (see below).
3. Food - We did not challenge too much as we all chose from the limited but good set menu with two choices. Risotto with asparagus or smoked salmon entrees, and harpuka fish or steak for mains - both reasonable choices. The food was well prepared and cooked. It's presentation was not high gastronomic but very good.
4. Allergies - We did not have allergy issues in the group so this was not tested but seemed to be well managed.
5. Wine - The comments on the house Chardonnay were positive. But for the red, we BYOed a "special bottle" - 1996 magnum of Turkey Flat Grenache Noir. They accepted this very well as we had not given notice and they gracefully accepted our desire to drink our own red - full marks to them in a pub! It went very well with both the fish and steak mains.
6. Value - The price of the set menu was very reasonable and the corkage likewise was good. Very good value for a quality meal with excellent service.
The food was fantastic but slightly over priced for the portion sized. Service was adequate but a little slow...it was surprisingly busy for a Monday night though. A bit more attentiveness would be appreciated but the food was good enough that we will be back.
Lovely restuarant had two beautiful main meals I recommend the duck and pasta as well as the chocolate pudding desert
Superb food and brilliant, attentive service. My friend and I were staying at the hotel and ended up eating at Dish for 3 nights! Consequently, we got to try a number of dishes and all were flawless. We tried the salmon fish cakes, local line snapper, duck, rissoto and veal. The rhubarb crumble was to die for. I think our frequenting of the restaurant itself speaks volumes! Loved it and would go back regardless of staying at the hotel.
Very nice food and service!. I just went for the first time with my boyfriend tonight. They introduced their new menu today, and it was pretty impressive! I ate the mushroom risotto, and it was really nice! Full of intense flavours. My partner had the Rib Eye, and it was cooked to perfection. Juicy and soft. Would definitely go back for more!
Dish Du Jour. Visited “Dish” last week for a family get together. The dining space is quite stylish without being overly formal. Whilst the venue is technically part of the Royce Hotel, it seems very much like any other stand alone restaurant.
The modern Australian menu offers an appealing array of options without straying too far from familiar territory.
Entrees are priced around $20, mains are mostly on either side of $40 and desserts circa $16 a plate.
The wine list is interesting and offers plenty of options providing you’re content to part with $50 and upwards for a bottle.
On first impressions, I figured the portions were a tad on the small side, but in retrospect they’re all right.
In a nutshell, I liked everything that hit the table. All the dishes were well cooked and hard to fault. Not so sure anything was particularly life changing or startling, but it was confident, well executed cooking just the same. Interestingly, I figured the desserts were possibly the most memorable part of the meal.
The wait staff was all very professional & obliging and whilst they don’t linger too close to the table, they seemed to materialize whenever they were required.
Would willingly revisit “Dish” again in the future, particularly if my folks are picking up the check.
Not too bad. Now, I used to work down the road from here and used to pass this hotel and restaurant every day and I have always wanted to try them out. The place just looks so damn cool!
Anyway, for my birthday recently a colleague treated me to a nice long lunch out.
And the food was not too bad.
I ordered the Roasted Duck Breast, Warm Salad of Duck Leg, Lentils, Endive, Pistachios & Sherry Jus whilst my dining companion ordered the Roasted Rump of Lamb with Grilled Mediterranean Vegetables, Confit Garlic & Olive Jus. Both were quite decent.
Criticisms: the duck salad that came with mine was a bit boring, the duck leg was overcooked and dry, whilst the endive was just plain and dull... the duck breast however, was pretty good and was not overcooked.
The lamb, on the other hand, was definitely overcooked and slightly tough. But taste-wise was good.
We also shared a Tahitian Lime Crème Bruleé and loved the limey-ness of it, but not the best creme brulee I've tasted. It was kind of heavy and stodgy....
for the price they charge for food, I would've expected my food not to be overcooked and tough, but flavour-wise, it was good.
Service.... was merely ok. They were the least friendly and warm waiters I've come across in awhile. Did their job fine, but gees... I did feel like I was in their way sometimes. That's not good for a customer to feel.
Don't get me wrong, everything was perfectly ok, but if you're charging $39 for a main, ok just doesn't cut it here in Melbourne. I can get far better quality food elsewhere for a lot less than that and I get served with a smile.
Would I go back there again? Sure... as long as somebody else was paying...
Anyways... no hurry to go back anytime soon. Too expensive and just not memorable enough.
Really enjoyed my dinner here. Wine and service were great. My husband had the steak and it was perfect. I had the snapper and it was lovely, although the croquettes tasted a little like it was made with deb instant.
Compliments to the Chef!. It had literally been 8 years since I was last at Dish. Not sure why it had taken so long to get back, I guess we were just determined to keep trying new things. Dish wasn't quite what we remembered it being, but you can't fault the food.
Let's get the ordinary things out of the way first. I remember Dish as being somewhat close to fine dining - this isn't the case anymore. It was noisy and a little chaotic on the floor. Between the crying baby to my left and then rowdy business crowd doing more drinking than eating to my right I had to do a double take to make sure I was sitting the right restaurant.
The menus ..... what the hell! They are printed on A3 paper and dropped on the table for review. They are MASSIVE and look ridiculously cheap and tacky. They just get in the way. Good luck finding your bread plate and maneuvering the table water with these gigantic menus on the table. It's just awkward and not well thought out at all.
Very happy to say though, that's where the downside ended.
The food was absolutely spectacular. Eggplant & falafel salad with roasted baby beets for me to start, seared scalops and calamari for my wife. Well presented, perfect portion size and cooked to perfection - a great start to the meal!
Mains - sliced duck breast with shredded duck meat salad for me, lamb rump with mash for my wife. Again cooked perfectly! Tender, full of flavour and very generous.
So all up, definitely recommend Dish for the food, not so much for the ambiance, though perhaps our preconceived ideas of what Dish was meant to be like were off track. I guess a lot could have changed since we were there last.
Top quality food. Hat's off to the team in the kitchen.
Friendly staff, excellent crab bisque, great duck dish, desserts were ok, only that my table for two was a bit too small otherwise pretty good dining experience :):)
Bad timing. Their staff were very friendly and knew the menu very well and the food was delicious.
However their timing was not good at all. My Main came out and then 5 minutes later my finances then came out, and when we ordered our dessert and coffees, we got our dessert and then we had to ask them twice where our coffees were, and by the time we got them, we had almost finished our dessert..
Went Herr for a birthday celebration. Service was good and the services were generous. Had the five spice duck (shared entree), rib of beef, side of wild mushrooms, coffee and churros (shared) for dessert. The steak was a little over and I wouldn't order the churros again. Overall taste and service is a thumbs up.
Very Good. I went there while travelling for business. The decor is very nice, contemporary with with contemporary painted white plates. It certainly has a cool vibe.
I had the Salmon fishcakes, which were excellent.
The service was extremely fast.
Amazing steak. Had the Spaghettini with Tiger Prawns, Crab, Garlic, Chilli & Olive Oil for entree and the Rib of Beef. Both were very well cooked and had amazing flavours. Definitely will be coming back for the steak again.
Exquisite lamb, served with Jerusalem Artichokes. Service was a little choppy, but the waiters were knowlegeable if not affable.
Dish@Royce Hotel: stylish yet subtle. Excellent food combined with attentive but discreet service -- made this an excellent choice for dinner. Not a cheap eat, but still good value for what you get.
Dishlicious. Over the years, I have eaten at many a top quality hotel's signature restaurant and, by and large, the experience has been less than memorable other than the serious dent such places put in your wallet.
Dish restaurant at the Royce Hotel in St Kilda Rd does however manage to be different. Firstly the ambience is not "Hotel", if you understand what I mean; but more a top quality restaurant that appeals to locals as much as it appeals to hotel guests. Secondly the service: very professional, knowledgeable and attentive, but not the slightest bit condescending, as is so often the case in high quality hotel restaurants that have forgotten the meaning of "hospitality". Thirdly the food: simply beautifully prepared and presented using fresh quality produce. Really quite delightful! Lastly, the price: certainly not cheap, but very much on a par with most quality restaurants in Melbourne with entrees averaging around $18/20 and mains around the $34/38. Dish also has an extensive wine list featuring a large number of good quality Australian, New Zealand and some European wines. Price wise, pretty much on a par with most restaurant prices.
On a recent visit for dinner, we were presented with the Autumnal menu. We started off by sharing a dish of grilled Queensland leader prawns with Portuguese fish stew & aioli followed by (for my wife) seared fillet of Tasmanian salmon with Chinese greens, grilled Tiger prawns, sweet & sour sauce and, (for me), a roasted fillet of wild Barramundi with a fricassee of mushrooms and thyme, sautéed potatoes and chicken jus. Delicious - couldn't fault any of the meal. To finish off we shared a fig and walnut Frangipane with Maple Syrup Ice Cream, fresh figs and mint salad. Also scrumptious.
Well worth a visit.
Nice dinner + buffet breakfast = :). Visited Dish whilst staying at Royce: dinner was professional service with an excellent duck dish ... buffet breakfast was a standard nice hotel spread, but elegantly done, constantly replenished. The large glass windows looking out onto the street make for a good outside view.
