The only place that reasonably priced their sushi. Not a lot to choose from but that really doesn’t matter here. They’ve got all the typical flavours you usually look for and they all taste good. They’re a little skimpy on the fillings though.
Been their regular customer for years now! Love a cheap and cheerful sushi! Their sushi's are very fresh as they do have a high turnover. My favourite has got to be the prawn and avo, and the fried chicken! Definitely an amazing cheap eats in the cbd
Would definitely recommend this spot!
a staple in melbourne cbd - they’ve raised their price point a little bit because of rental costs (which is reasonable in my opinion) yet they’re still one of the cheapest and top quality sushi places in melbourne. you can see them making the sushi constantly during the day so you know it’s fresh. the teriyaki chicken, salmon avo and unagi rolls are my favourite - you will probably have to opt to take away these goodies but if you can manage to squeeze a spot in the side seating it’ll feel like you’re in a cute hidden gem in japan!
My score 4.25 stars. J and I got a takeaway snack for dinner from here on Tue 1st Oct. Service was lovely and it wasn’t too busy (2pm-ish). We got 3 Maki rolls, normally $2.20ea (which is a bargain) - but we got 3 for $6 (a steal)!
Spicy cooked tuna and cucumber – Good size, nice spice heat, but also a bit sweet (still liked it though).
Tamago – Pick of the bunch, tasty, not too sweet (unlike lots of places), plenty of omelette, good size overall too.
Cooked tuna and Avo – Good size & plenty of filling. Was good, but would prefer more mayo (prob not trad but who cares – we love Kewpie)...
First time we’ve been here in ages (not sure why it’s been so long), must come back again soon & work our way through options to find our favourites…
Cute little hole in the wall spot that's great for grab and go rolls. The tamago rolls are nice, and the veg and tofu are also great. Affordable prices make this a go-to snack destination.
Three delicious sushi rolls although not the most expertly wrapped. Salmon was fresh and the avocado somewhat generous, very yummy lunch
Cheap and tasty sushi
Been here couple times, the place seems bit small with some seats inside but since it's famous for take-away.
The staffs were quite nice and there were just no fuss.
All the sushi rolls I had were satisfying. Good amount of filling to rice ratio, and perfectly cooked and chewy rice, as well as good size.
Had the unagi and tofu veggie sushi and were both pretty good, Better than some sushi rolls I've tried. I also liked how they give homemade wasabi (i think it is)
Prawn sushi had some fish roe and avo in it, and I really enjoyed them.
Tamago sushi was so generous with the tamago, and it was fluffy and soft.
Overall, with $2.20 per rolls, it's the best you can get in the city imo.
( follow for more!✨)
xx,joelle.
Tokui Sushi is one of the best (and most reliable) sushi shops in the city. Not only its freshly made and one of the cheapest price but their sushi filling is very generous. I have been going to Tokui Sushi for many years now and although many other Sushi places have opened up around the city the past few years, Tokui Sushi has still stood strong and has not faltered.
🔆LOCATION🔆
Tokui Sushi is located on Lonsdale Street, near the corner of Swanston Street.
This busy intersection has alot of traffic and at times people can miss it if not looking. The sushi shop is very basic however offer simple seating on bar chairs, bench table against the wall. This simple set up is fine because most people buy sushi to take-away.
🔆SERVICE🔆
The staff at Tokui Sushi are very friendly and when you're not sure what to have, they can easily help to recommend.
🔆MENU/PRICE🔆
All sushi's are $2.20 each
Purchase 3 or more sushi, $2.00 each
The best thing about Tokui Sushi is that they are very generous with their filling wrapped in sushi rice. The sushi rice itself is very moist and is a decent thin layer, not like other sushi places where they jam pack the sushi rice and the filling is minimal.
🔆VERDICT🔆
Simply delicious! Cannot fault.
On this occasion for review today, I purchased the Teriyaki Beef (Scotch Fillet) and Fried Chicken sushi.
The beef was thiny sliced with decent amount of Teriyaki sauce marinated into the meat which was delicious. The beef was soft and juicy.
The fried chicken sushi was also quite tasty. The chicken was tender and soft and lightly battered. The batter was not oily which was nice.
Great place for cheap sushi in such good quality. Love the prices and options. Simple sushi combinations and nice staff.
I love the classic plain avocado one. There are around four vegetarian options and many options with meats or seafood. $2.20 seem more worth it paying for the non-veggie options.
They have special discount on the remaining sushi during closing hours, where they cost $2.00. You better hurry as the sushi sell out fast.

Pretty good sushi considering the competition that’s in the area. Nice range - all the usual that you’d expect. High turnover so you can expect fresh food. Plus they pack the sushi with plenty of ingredients - no skimping out on that front. Prices are very reasonable and competitive with other store.
Staff are extremely helpful and very friendly.
Always like an avocado or a tuna or crispy chicken
Wheelchair accessible. Kid friendly. Eat in or takeaway.
No doubt the most worth it take away sushi you’ll find in Melbourne, with $10, you can get 5 rolls of sushi! What a bargain, and it’s located in CBD!

Been here many times, affordable and pretty good sushi rolls. The best thing about them is they dont cheap out on the ingredients. They dont put too much rice in their rolls.
Not much to say. Cheap sushi, taste 4/5, value 5/5. Probably wouldn’t get a sashimi pack though, just go for an extra roll to add more variety. The California rolls in particular have a good mix of avocado and fish roe.
Ate here for the first time today and I could not be more impressed. I am determined to come back once a week to get my weekly dose of omega3 hehe. Thank you Tokui Sushi for keeping the price affordable and the quality remains high.

Hands down the best budget sushi joint. Limited selection but everything is good. There are a couple seats inside and they can cut the rolls if asked. Please be aware, the place is CASH ONLY but every roll is less than 3$
This place is amazing. You can get a salmon sushi box for $6 or a salmon sashimi box for $8. The ingredients are so fresh that it is naturally tasty 😋 I highly recommend this place for some quick sushi.
I almost never have sushi rolls anywhere else because of this place. It's difficult to find places that have consistently provided quality food at a reasonable price over so many years. For 10 years, all the sushi rolls here have been a flat $2 each, even when all the surrounding sushi places have been jacking up their prices to well over $3. And there's a good variety here too; while you won't find things like soft shell crab or tempura prawns, you can get battered whiting, unagi, salmon and chicken, all for the same low price. And as you can see from the photos, there's a lot of stuff in these, not like in other places where the rolls are mostly rice.
More recently they had to increase their prices to $2.20, and they're still by far the best value anywhere, possibly in all of Victoria. I always get the California and tuna rolls, and love how the crab stick is soft and generously packed in there. There's also a good amount of avocado in each. Their sashimi packs are also awesome value - 11 thick slices of salmon sashimi for only $8.
Dining in is possible but seating is very limited so most people do takeaways. They also only accept cash.
Places like these should have as much support as they can get. I can only hope that other businesses will learn to place their greed behind providing quality food at reasonable prices for their customers like this place does.
If you’re looking for hand rolls, Tokui is the place to go in the CBD. Not only are they the cheapest here, they also have the thickest, softest, and freshest hand rolls you’ll find in take-away form. The salmon portions in the rolls are generous and relatively fatty for how the cheap each roll is, and the absence of mayonnaise makes them more authentic - not that these types of hand rolls even exist in Japan - but it still improves the experience nevertheless.
My only complaint is that it’s not very comfortable to eat in here as it’s small and cramped, so don’t expect a dine-in experience. I highly recommend getting your sushi here if you’re in the area.
Decent priced and a variety of sushis available. Limited row seating. The first entry of thrle sushi stall is that there is a strong vinegar smell which is kind of unpleasant. The tuna sushi is compact, full of flavour and the avocado is fresh! Great place for sushi on the go.
Great little sushi shop running along lonsdale street.. this sushi place used to serve $2 sushi roll but now it’s gonna cost you $2.20 each regardless of what you order.. The sushi here is fresh and totally worth the visit.. very good spot for a quick stop if you are in the area..
Quick and cheap great sushi place in the center of Melbourne CBD. What could go wrong? They also have a great variety of hand rolls there and they all taste great and fresh. Whenever I need a quick bite in the CBD, this is the place to go. Some of my favourites are the unagi hand roll and the deep fried fish hand roll.
I've only been here for takeaway, but the $2.20 sushi rolls are REALLY nice at its price. Not only that, but the interior is nice too, whilst the service is fast paced - you're not going to have to be waiting for your food for long. LOVE IT
Conveniently located on the side of MC, I’ve stopped by numerous times on my way to catch the train.
They are very generous with their sushi rolls, packing them with lots of rice and quality fillings. While they aren’t the best sushi rolls I’ve ever had, they’re still really good(especially with their low prices). The staff are patient and lunchtime service is always quick. Though keep in mind the place is quite small so the seats are often occupied.
Overall, their sushi rolls and nigiri are better than a majority of the other chain sushi stores. So, recommended for a quick, tasty, filling and cheap eat.
The prices may have gone up $0.20 in recent times but if you work in the area, then Tokui is still the place to go for your hand roll fix. Don't let the low price fool you. The food here is good. Fat, flavourful handrolls that won't leave your wallet feeling so light. Quick in and out service that you can take away from or eat in if your lucky to find a seat. Best enjoyed in the warmer months in any nearby green space or back at your desk!
As the cheapest sushi roll spot in Melbourne CBD, it's worth every bit of its 4 star as a quick meal fix. Their sushi are delicious and comparable with the other fast sushi chain.
I love the sushi combinations with egg, egg & unagi, prawns and salmon.
Never had sushi this cheap before. Whole box of salmon sushi for only $6. Great deal for cheap eats. Quality of the sushi is good for it’s price.
Such a cheap place! I always pop by to get their salmon sushi 🍣
They raised their price to $2.10 per sushi, but that’s still extremely affordable. They also only take cash unfortunately. But their location is super convenient and their sushi just as good, if not better than more expensive sushi stores.
My initial review did not have enough characters. All I need to say is...Quick, Cheap and Tasty! One of the best options for a cheap lunch in the city.
My favorite place in Melbourne CBD to get take away sushi!
It is cheap and fresh.
Strongly recommend to those have short lunch breaks for their sushi craves :)
Could never go wrong with sushi at a good price. Would always love to pop by here and even buy more for study sessions. Even at their low prices, the quality is not diminished and the selection is just amazing. Just as it for other takeout places, it's not a restaurant grade quality but for this price, what more can you ask for?
Tokui Sushi is a small but super popular Japanese sushi shop in the CBD area. Despite the recent price increase (from $2 to $2.20), it’s is still the most affordable sushi place in the area! Service is quick, however the venue is very cramped so it’s better if you just get your sushi to-go!
The size of the rolls are also more substantial than your average sushi shop, and they’re very generous with the fillings too! I would also recommend trying the sashimi - nice, fresh, and thick slices - you get quite a large amount for what you’re paying!
Definitely a good place in the city for a cheap lunch or for a quick sushi-fix!
The best sushi to go in town! Serves the freshest fishes (and other good stuff) on tasty rice. Their maki sushi are generous size and filling. And their sashimi are definitely worth a try, fresh and come in big chunk!
Only accept cash.
Food : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ fresh rolls
Price : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ $2,20 one roll / cheaper roll that I found in Melbourne on business hours
Service : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Quick, friendly staff
Ambiance : ⭐️ nothing special / quite small
This is probably the cheapest sushi in Melbourne and it’s certainly the busiest. $2 per sushi roll, no matter the flavour. Very quick service and convenient location. Yum yum yum
One roll is generously filled so you’d feel like you got your money’s worth. A bit too sweet for my taste. The place is a bit dark inside though it seemed more famous for takeaways.
This is the only 'fast food' sushi place I ever go to if I just needed a light snack. At $2 a pop they are so generous in the filling and everytime I go they're freshly made (compared to sushi sushi etc) Their tamago (egg) is fluffy and sweet and creamy - Salmon and California definitely my other favourites as well. Definitely buy a 4 pack, it's only $8! Cash only.
The Sushi here is so cheap and fresh as they sell so quickly! The size of the sushi is also large with the rice to filling ratio being balanced .

Came here for some sushi takeaway, was very surprised by the quality of the sushi.
Definitely one of the most affordable takeaway sushi place around...
Generous portion and fillings. Price is extremely affordable too..
Will be back again.
I can see why people love coming here! The cheapest sushi’s I’ve ever bought - and sizes of sushi are relatively large too.
My favourite is the tuna sushi. So flavourful that I didn’t really even need the soy sauce.
Wish there were more sushi types and an option for brown rice sushi.
Delicious and cheap, quick, freshly made sushi and sashimi. There are no bells and whistles at this shop, but if you're after a quick bite or takeaway this place is rather good bang for buck.
The cheapest, fastest sushi in Melbourne. For $2 the serving sizes are great and they don't skimp on fillings. And the tamago maki (egg sushi roll) is one of the best I've had in Melbourne.
I think they have the best tamago(egg roll) sushi ever in Melbourne. Best value for money!!!🤑 Super quick service. Favorite sushi place!!❤️
Cheapest sushi around, and they are quite decent sizes.
Do try the egg (tamago) rolls. Not sure how fresh the salmon can be though, have yet to try it out.
Why pay more than $2 for sushi???? For $2 this is the best value sushi in Melbourne. The sushi is a tad smaller than other places but made fresh which is the most important thing.
The most wonderful Tamago Maki ever. The egg in the middle was so big and fluffy. Each bite is filled with the lusciousness of the omelette. Fantastic snack!
My favourite place to get sushi rolls when I’m busy. Service is always fast and every roll is only $2. Their ingredients are also really fresh!
The cheapest and most delicious sushi in Melbourne. No frills, fast and friendly service. The sushi size is very decent for $2 each and comes with a variety of fillings to choose from.
Love this place. Number 1 spot for sushi in the city. Always fresh because of the high turnover, very busy and for good reason. Bigger than average portions with generous fillings. Big selection and very friendly and efficient staff to deal with the high traffic.
One of the cheapest sushi in the town! The decoration, nothing to expect. The food, good enough compared to the affordable price for everyone. I bought a sushi meal and a teriyaki roll, at least I wasn't disappointed. But the sashimi is the cheap one for sure, you can know that by its color. However, if you're gonna want to take away a cheap sushi meal on your way, get it!
They just saved me a lot through my broke time in uni. Cheap, tasty and convenient. I really enjoy $2 roll and a lot of wasabi to fill me up. Usually, I'm very picky when it comes to Japanese food but with this price, you can't ask for more!
All the sushi rolls here are $2, no matter what the filling is - teriyaki beef, fried chicken, whiting fillet, smoked salmon and avocado, all $2!!! It always tastes great as well, not dry at all, even when it's the middle of the day. The only catch is they only take cash and I almost never have cash on me, but sometimes I'll make a conscious effort to grab some coins on the way out of the house in the morning because this place has the best and cheapest sushi in all of Melbourne in my opinion. Hope it never shuts down.
It is a small shop with some chairs. It is better to take away. It is also the cheapest sushi roll in Melbourne. All the sushi roll is 2 dollars. The sushi is nice. It is a good choice for a meal.
My go to sushi roll shop!!
The cheapest yet fresh & taste even better than other normal price sushi shop across cbd.
Keep doing good work! 🍣👍🏻
You can never go wrong with tokui. Cheapest sushi place in melb cbd! And dont worry, they serve fresh sashimi. When its around 6pm they even sell the remaining rolls in sets.
Nice and cheap sushi! I especially like the tamago sushi, soft and delicate and not too sweet. A regular place for a quick snack. Can get pretty crowded but service is friendly and quick.
one of my favourite go to stores for a quick lunch if i'm running late or have loose change! sushi tastes great and they're bigger than other sushi stores, best of all they're all $2!
Found out about this "cheapest sushi roll joint in Melbourne" a while ago and had to give them a try of course. The fuss is right; Slightly bigger rolls packed with generous ratio of filling to rice. Very fresh too due to high turnover, even at 3pm when I was there.
Hungry and it's between meals. Don't want to spend heaps of money. Have been using the credit card way too much the past few days. Visiting Melbourne for a few nights.
Walked past Tokui, not very impressive or inviting. But the price point was tempting. Only $2 for a sushi roll????
Damn I'm in.
Tamago roll (not something I've seen in a long time)
Spicy tuna and cucumber
Avocado and unagi
It's definitely good, fresh and very good value.
If you are student or not, tight on money and need a feed. Go to tokui sushi
Quality of sushi and fish was excellent, and there was a very wide range to choose from as well! The sushi rolls were all $2 each, and were just as good as any other sushi from other shops such as Sushi Sushi. Defs recommend!
C'mon for $2 that is a bargain
Most sushi was standard except for the eel which was surprisingly delicious.
Cheaper than the rest
Enough said
The city is bound by endless options for sushi joints but this so far, has been the cheapest alternative I have found. The sizing of the sushi rolls are standard - if not more generous than others. Staff are really friendly. Drop by when you're hungry and that wallet is feeling a little light for something on the go!
The sushi is amazing here. They don't scrimp on ingredients, and their tamago is always fluffy, full and yellow. Each roll is $2, which is extremely cheap considering most other chains offer hand rolls starting from $2.30! Would highly recommend this place - the staff are always friendly, and it is so worth the little money you're going to spend.
Probably the cheapest sushi you can find in the CBD. The rolls are sufficiently big for the cheap $2 price (compared to chain sushi stores like Sushi Sushi). Freshly made every day, it's a consistently popular spot!
Almost missed the shop but no regrets once you find it. For $2 a roll, and they provide soy and wasabi upon request, this is the best sushi fix for anyone in city. Taste is great and comparable if not better than most other sushi joints. Must try!
Best place in Melbourne to get cheap but good sushi, it's cash only btw. There is always a variety of flavours, staff are friendly and service is fast. $2 for a roll, you can't go wrong!
My favourite Sushi place in Melbourne! At $2 a roll, I didn't expect much taste-wise. BUT, when I first bit into that soft, fluffy tamago, I was left feeling wow-ed!
No other sushi chains sell tamago (egg) rolls, but oh my, it is really good! Love it! Will definitely go back for more! The salmon tasted super fresh and good too!
Love this place!
For when you don't know what to grab for lunch you default to sushi rolls, my choice? Tokui Sushi. As the price of sushi hand rolls increase, these guys have managed to keep their price point at $2 per roll. The salmon and avocado is the clear winner, I just get the others just to mix things up. They are worthy of my ongoing support.
Tokui has the best sushi in Melbourne. It is cheap, delicious and has great quality. Highly recommend coming to Tokui, it will never disappoint you!
The place is pretty busy if you visit lunch or dinner time. All kind of sushi rolls are $2 and one pack of salmon sushi is $6. The price of all in here is reasonable. Considering the price, food tasty is pretty cool.
Great sushi! This is probably among the best sushi I have ever had. Even better is that the rolls costs $2 only! Remember to ask for more soy sauce as the tubes are very small.
best place in the world i wish they franchised !! the sushi rolls are so fresh and well made. they're thicker than other places too. for $2, these rolls are absolutely amazing. this is my go-to sushi place!!
Value alone makes Tokui a fantastic gem but they probably have the best soft sushi rice in Melbourne period... probably because the sushi disappears within 15-30 minutes max, such is their turnover.
All sushi $2. Great value considering it is always fresh and the fillings have a good amount in them. Always busy when i go at lunch time on the weekdays. Can see them refilling new sushi all the time because they are flying out the door at such a great price.
This has to be the most valued sushi rolls you can get in city. $2 for every roll will leave you skeptical thinking that it's a closing hour sales or leftover sushi. But this isn't true in tokui, fresh sushi handroll made daily and for $2, it's sure a good place for students. The fillings is satisfying! More filling than rice. Only turn off is that they do not offer brown rice options
BEST.PRAWN.SUSHI.EVER! And the only place that has eel sushi for only $2! Can't believe their sushi prices are still $2 when every other sushi outlet have increase theirs! It's my go-to place everytime I visit Melbourne!!

Line was quite long when we arrived, but was moving smoothly. Service here is fast paced, the server was very attentive. It's a very small place with plenty of their sushi rolls on display and all for only $2!
I had the spicy tuna, smoked salmon and prawn rolls. They were really tasty and I would definitely come back! Very value for money 😁
Far and away the BEST sushi in Melbourne's CBD. Can never get over how cheap both individual rolls as well as assorted packs are compared to elsewhere and the portions are very generous! Above all though, Tokui's sushi is FRESH with regular replenishments to avoid having to buy old dried-out hand rolls that have been sitting on display all day - a sad and unappetising reality with so many other takeaway sushi places.
My favourite sushi store ever! The sushi here is freshly made in store, tastes delicious, and at a crazy good price of $2 each. My favourite is their eel (unagi) sushi which is pretty difficult to find anywhere else. Even if I'm on the other side of the city, I'll make my way here to support them.
Good value for money, good for a quick stop. Cash only is a bit annoying. Please fix this tokui sushi people. Only sell sushi, maybe consider selling inari as well
I'm not an expert on sushi or sashimi 🍣 but this place is always busy and I've been coming here for 2 years and it's consistently good. Cheap and cheerful!
Best sushi in town! Fresh and cheap. Their staff are really nice and friendly. I used to go there all the time when I worked on Lonsdale street but now I'm in Docklands and I miss Tokui Sushi alot.
What to Get: Fried Chicken (My fav), Prawn, Salmon, Unagi.
$2 Sushi Rolls.
An absolute classic.
Check out the site for more photos!
Very cheap compared to sushi elsewhere.
The quality is good, not stingy sizes or filling and there is plenty to choose from.
Great for if you're looking to grab sushi in CBD
EDIT: tofu vegetable roll is delicious the best vege sushi around !!! And for $2 you can't just have one
very fresh and good quality sushi!
and at a very very decent price
you can't go wrong here, love this place and it never seems to disappoint :)
Fresh, healthy, tasty and cheap sushi! While this is predominantly a quick take away shop you can perch yourself at their long table for a quick sushi fix.
The range on offer are all classics though my favourites are the avocado roll and tomago (egg) roll. The vegetables and tofu or seaweed rolls are all good too. Soy, wasabi and pickled ginger is all included and every roll is just $2 - such a bargain. Great for a quick bite.
It’s the place known for having two dollar sushi hand rolls in a super central location. Note: that in New Zealand and much of the rest of the developed world, we’re more used to having sushi slices. Here they’re happy to cut them up for you, the way you like. The quality is fair at Tokui Sushi for what you pay and it remains markedly better than the generic rolls you get at the chain sushi stores.
I have been coming here for many years! The owner is lovely and the sushi is just fresh and amazing!!! Great variety and very filling! A must visit place for sushi roll lovers!! :-)
I laugh when I see the prices (and portions) of other sushi places!
Tokui Sushi is super affordable (currently $2.50 a roll), incredibly tasty and the woman who has served me each time I've visited is really courteous and polite.
Could not recommended enough!
Best value sushi in the CBD.
Lovely owners, great sushi, amazing prices. I like the salmon, tuna and crispy chicken the most.
At $2.50/sushi roll, you’re definitely getting the most bang for your buck if you want sushi.
My favourite sushi in Melbourne! The prices are simply right and the sushi is always fresh. Most of the time I have it made o. The spot as it is so popular and the food in the display finishes many times during the day! Love have fresh sushi there!
Best sushi rolls in Melbourne! I’ve been coming here in the past 10 years. The owners are always very kind. The Egg (Tamago) sushi is mouth watering delicious. The prawn and salmon sushi are very fresh. Simply the best. Such an iconic eatery in Melbourne.
Best value sushi in Melbourne! Cheap and so so so tasty! 10/10 highly recommended
I’m Japanese I know good sushi. Rice is soft and they use good amount of vinegar in it, their sushi tastes always fresh anytime I visit. You can’t get sushi for this price in Australia! I can’t go anywhere else anymore.
Don’t forget cash!
Best sushi in the CBD! Each roll is only $2.50 and they are just as good (if not better) than other more expensive sushi places in the city; great bang for your buck! I highly recommend the tuna and avocado rolls!
2022: Youcan't beat $2.50 for a Salmon Avocado Roll, givenSushi Hub is now $4.20.
Tokui for the win.
*****
2009-2018: My favourite sushi bar in the city and soon to be yours too.
Tokui's definitely deserving of it's high rating, with swift service and $2 a roll?
Just bananas!
Generous bits of salmon, avocado and various other fillings, wins my vote.
Don't change and I'll keep coming.
UPDATE: The rolls have finally gotten a price rise after more than a decade.
They have a deal for $2 per roll, if you buy 3...
