Review George Street Cafe - Melbourne

Whenever on holidays in Melbourne I breakfast here once or twice. Their food and coffee are great (my fav is traditional porridge with fruit/nuts) and Michael seems well liked by his local customers. It's a rare 5⭐ from me...Recommended.

Not sure what the coffee was like ordered paid walked out had to get to work . They appear to have developed a nice local following and I understand they need to look after the locals first its a good policy but this place is not for walk ins. Large numbers of coffee orders still in the que locals walk in get bumped up que . I understand the need times are tough and you should look after them . Just tell others the coffee will be 15 minutes i will serve others first so we can say thank i will go somewhere else.

Food was good. I passed by after tennis. It's a pretty busy cafe. Most customers seem to be from the neighbourhood. I learnt from my first visit that everyone knows Michael 😆

One of the joys of working in and around Melbourne and Victoria are the amazing places you come across quite serendipitously. This morning I took a new path to work and found the most delightful cafe ‘George Street Cafe’. With a blustery wind that felt like Antarctica had floated into Port Phillip Bay, I ventured inside for respite for a morning heart starter latte. I was greeted by the lovely Adam and Jonty who were busily making coffees and serving customers. Listening to the cafe ‘chit chat’ it was clear this was a regular for many of the diners. As my hands warmed around my latte, I flipped through a newspaper but really was delightfully distracted by the warm and cosy atmosphere that exudes from this little place. It represented the essence of a community that enjoys and appreciates consistency in the known and friendliness from those they’ve come to hand over their culinary taste to. I watched a few breakfasts being served, all of which looked tantalisingly. The cakes, slices and sweet treats were tempting but alas, I had a breakfast meeting today otherwise the banana cake would’ve been coming with me. Highly recommend George Street Cafe is on your list if nothing more than to see how a good cafe is run. Thank you.

Continuously impresses me; George Street café is a hidden gem amongst the busy hospital district of East Melbourne. With a tasty strong house blend, the coffee delights the senses, and the sweet treats confirm the quality of this place. Ignore the somewhat cheap decor interior and appreciate the taste of the food, the kindness of the staff, and the consistent brilliance of George St Café. 4 stars.

First time visit here in East Melbourne. I'm truly blown away how good the original structure of the building still stands. The food menu is ace, prices are affordable. They serve tea and coffee for those who love a sip. Very peaceful area. Slow music in back ground. They have new paper aswell for reading. Must visit.

Great coffee and really good customer service! Will definitely be back to try the food whenever I’m in the area again.

I came here on a Saturday morning and was welcomed very kindly and pleasantly by the staff. I tried out their breakfast burger and iced coffee. The staff were very accommodating and super friendly. The food was delicious! The breakfast burger was nicely toasted and flavourful with a rich, melt in your mouth texture which was absolutely delicious! One of the best I had. The iced coffee was a real delight. The barista Peter really knows his stuff. The atmosphere is great and there's a friendly, community vibe that's both welcoming and vibrant. A really great experience and a real highlight to any day. Great food and a great vibe. A must visit!

A nice little cafe on a quiet street. I had the pumpkin, egg and bread breakfast. It was delicious. I would definitely go there again. Mmmmm

The George Street Cafe is a local East Melbourne landmark and the place where the locals flock to meet up. The proprietor, Michael knows everybody by name and ensures all customers become return customers. The food menu board regularly has specials and the printed menu has a good range at affordable prices. But best of all is the coffee, arguably the best in Melbourne (even without an Italian barista in sight)!

Ordered takeaway coffee and fruit toast. They put the butter separate to the fruit toast! Do they think I carry a butter knife around? Who does this. Toast was a bit burnt too.

This is the perfect Cafe to catch up with friends, it has a nice welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel comfortable to sit and have a cup of coffee whilst reading the paper. This place also uses a nice strong coffee and offers the opinions of almond milk or bonsoy which is great for lactose intolerant people such as myself. Perfect little gem of a Cafe that anyone should give a shot!

Arrived at morning peak hour. Busy and efficient turnaround of what were definitely more locals and regulars than not.
Very good coffee. Good breakfast. Nothing over the top on the menu - less to dwell on!

Best coffee in Melbourne- wakes you up & puts a big smile on your face! Sally & Robert
Only 4.5 because the location isn't Tuscany! Laugh out Loud!

I had lunch here few days ago with friends. We ordered 1 veg and 1 non-veg risotto, 1 chicken burger with salad & chips. Nice food, very reasonable price for the massive serving. I did not expect the serving was that huge so I ordered a coffee and I was absolutely fine without dinner. Oh, talking about coffee, don't think it ever fail to impress me. This place was already my favorite spot for coffee when I was working in the area.

What a lovely cafe. Popped over from hospital to grab some breakfast while daughter having procedure. Being a distracted middle aged mother, the young man at the counter greeted me calmly as I babbled my order. He was patient with this old vegan; offering me some alternate options. A lovely manner and delicious breakfast. Lovely quaint atmosphere.

A little cafe hidden away in the heart of East Melbourne. The area is quiet and there's plenty of parking available should you wish to drive. I wouldn't imagine that many people venture specifically to visit this cafe - this very much looks like a classic neighbourhood cafe predominantly filled with local East Melbournites. The place looks fairly run down and could do with some renovations, but this didn't ruin the experience. There was no table service, we had to order at the counter which is strange and maybe a little outdated for a cafe in Melbourne. The coffee was satisfactory. We ordered a smashed avocado and an eggs Benedict. Both were really nice. Given the unique location, this place has huge potential should they wish to make something more of this cafe. There isn't really anything significant in immediate walking distance and there is huge potential to make this a spot for more than just the surrounding neighbourhood. I wouldn't recommend driving out of your way to visit here, especially considering the options available in Richmond, Abbotsford, Collingwood and Fitzroy. But if you're in the area, give it a try.

This is a truly neighbourhood café. It sits on the corner of two very quiet streets in the idyllic suburb of East Melbourne. Surrounded by plenty of permitted parking, and far away from the common modes of public transport, it’s little surprise that George Street is hardly known beyond the pristine perimeters of 3002.

This place served a purpose as really the only cafe in East Melbourne for some time, but has now been superseded by a number of other venues, not to mention the rise of Richmond, Fitzroy, Collingwood and the CBD. Far from terrible, but far too many better options. As has been mentioned in years before it needs a bit of an update.

The George Street Café in East Melbourne originally began its life as a food store- all the way back in 1867. Nowadays it is a café, headed up by the current owner, Michael Chen, a man whose passion for healthy eating and customer service is astounding. On your first visit, Michael will welcome you with a chat, some advice about what to order and a smile.

Breakfast in this busy corner caféUsual poached egg on toast. Eggs can be ordered cage free or for another 50c free range - nice choice.Toast was good quality and coffee well madeI enjoyed the meal but "ambience" ordinary . Furniture plain, décor plain. Order at the counter rather than table service so more like cafeteria

French toast was out of this world!! So filling and a giant serve. Great value for money and friendly service!! Only area that could use improvement was the quality of the coffee. It was made well but lacking flavour!

Great experience overall and will be back to try other items on the menu that also looked great!

Welcoming and friendly. I went to George street for the first time to try the pork burger, the kitchen was closed but the chef was happy to do the order for me, which was great because I was starving!
Whilst waiting for the burger I ordered a latte with was delicious, creamy and rich, not too bitter like some cafes.
When the burger came the pork melted in my mouth and was easily the best burger I ever had , it wasn't too sweet or drenched in plum sauce.
It's rare to see a small Cafe that still makes fresh muffins and uses free range eggs. Will definitely return there for breakfast and highly recommended!

Great coffee and breakfast. Recommend the 5 bean mix. Friendly efficient service. We'll be back!

Over haul needed. Dear George street cafe, to see your prime location eatery almost empty on weekends is such a shame, and a great waste of a prime location. I'm afraid general tastes and expectations of locals who enjoy eating out are now much higher than what you are aiming for, probably have been for some time now. Your approach may have blossomed 20 years ago.. This is not just an east Melbourne snobbery thing. In fact far from it. Try some highly rated cafés from other surrounding suburbs of Melbourne, from Brunswick, spotswood, footscray to cremorne and Collingwood, the quality and imagination is high, and people expect that now. What many places don't have, is your amazing location, Please don't waste this asset, or limit your clientele to the winter footy or summer cricket crowds passing through, you have a huge local population who will support you with the right receipe. Over haul the concept, premises, chef, service and menu, get inspired by successful businesses about town, and reap the benefits. Good luck!

The standard has fallen recent breakfast well below par

Great local cafe, friendly and fast service, tasty breakfast and good coffee. Nice location and ambiance as well, both inside and outside. Overall fantastic local gem with strong following among loyal clientele..

TERRIBLE. Coffee was watery, weak, bordering on cold. Egg and bacon sandwich was probably the worst I've ever had. Stale bread, dry, no sauce or flavour. I will never go back until I see a 'under new management' sign. Such a shame because its on one of the best streets in Melbourne.

Great Coffee. Without a doubt the best coffee in Melbourne, but make sure the Chinese girl makes the coffee as it does make a vast difference. Breakfast was great. The Eggs Benedict was made to perfection. This will be my local from now on.

Nice little cafe with good food.. I can't understand all the really negative reviews about this place. It is not purporting to be anything more than a nice local cafe serving up decent food. Have eaten breakfast and lunch here a number of times and have never been disappointed, don't listen to the negative reviews and stop off for some food on your way to and from the G.

Eggs florentine with grit. Soon after finding a seat, not-my-coffee was delivered - the waitress actually said to the guy beside me "latte" and gave him my flat white, and me his latte. Mine was supposed to be strong - both his and mine looked the same strength. I didn't say anything, cause hey, we're only talking about 5% of foam, right? Then came my eggs florentine. Taste was ok (but not ok for for the high price they charge!), but it's always disappointing when spinach isn't washed properly, and little bits of sand crackle between your teeth.

Average- wouldn't recommend the food. I had a toasted sandwich here and it wasn't very nice- bread didn't seem the freshest and lacked filling. It is on a nice street though and they have 5-6 tables outside to sit at. So maybe nice to sit and have a coffee at but they need to work on their menu.
Dean
Coffee was good, very overpriced though.
Turtle
Awful the food, the service, the experience. No flavour, overcooked and expensive. Never again.
Dave
I visited recently with my wife for a mid week lunch. The food and coffee were terrible. Dry, stale and flavourless. We were really really disappointed at how bad it was. It's extraordinary that it's still open. The fact 50% of reviews were negative says it all'

Could do better.... For a cafe that charges $17 for a bit of cool bacon, small tomato slice, 2 small dry sausages, dry toast and poached eggs that appear to have been cooked in a vat of vinegar, I would expect that at least the ambiance would be o'k to cover this cost. Oh so wrong. Not only was the food bad but the service was lacking.

I'm usually pretty generous with cafes and restaurants as I know things can go wrong and I won't say I will never go back but this was just terrible. 2/10.

Save your money - go elsewhere. Very overpriced for what you get. Food is average at best. As mentioned in other reviews, the female staff are rude and have an attitude problem. This place is popular with locals, but that is due to a lack of quality alternatives in close proximity. Save your money - avoid.

George Street Cafe. Seems a popular venue for locals. The staff greet many of the customers enthusiastically by name or by remembering the regulars orders. Quite a pleasant experience being able to sit outside, enjoy the generously sized big breakfast and hear the distant sounds of the footy match at the nearby M.C.G. Found the staff friendly and the service, while a little slow, perfectly adequate.

Should be a lot better than what it is. Great location. Food is ok but boring. Maybe something special 6-7 years ago but hasn't kept up with the times. Service could be a lot better.
