Review Amigos Hardware Lane - Melbourne

Sushma Kollu
We expected the place to be authentic Mexican, turns out it wasn’t. The food was “okay” We’ve had better one’s. Despite the okay-ish food, the staff mad device was really amazing though. I would suggest sitting outside enjoy the lane view at night.

Definitely a must to try great food and great customer service. Fajitas were served well as sharing plates. Well priced. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Dinner @AmigosHardwareLane and chose the following: Chicken honey and mustard fajita - sizzling plate with pan tossed ingredients with cream, white wine, garlic, served with a side plate of 3 tortillas, rice, pico de gallo, lettuce & guacamole Out comes a sizzling plate and once it cools down a bit, a delicious sauce steals the show. I love the white wine flavour and once you assemble the soft tortilla with all the ingredients and take a bite, there's lots happening. Freshness from the pico de gallo, creaminess from the guacamole, body from the spiced rice and then the pan ingredients with tender strips of succulent chicken and a delicious tortilla to hold it all together, makes for an excellent dish. Churros - Spanish donuts, cinnamon sugar, melted dipping chocolate Hard to go past this classic and it didn't disappoint. Just enough crunch on the outside of the donuts, soft and slightly chewy on the inside, and dipped in that luxurious chocolate sauce and it's time to drift off to your happy place. Yum. #Mexicanfood #fajita #chicken #guacamole #tortillas #picodegallo #churros #donut #chocolate #sweettooth #dessert #foodie #melbournefood #melbournecbd @zomatomelb

Dos taco’s por favor bambini! If you’re like Dirk and enjoy a Margherita or two, come on down to amigos with your irmaos! Delicious fajitas, taquitas and enchilada, you will love it. Dirk said it was his new favourite place in this dimension.

I ordered Nachos with beef to take away, and look what they gave me. I don't think it was a mistake because I was the only costumer there. I suggest you to be honest with the costumer and just say that you don't have what I asked for. So disappointed.

My husband and I enjoyed the food. It was the best quesadilla I have ever eaten! I would have given 5 stars but we were sitting inside and the smell was a bit stifling; maybe they need better ventilation in the back of the restaurant. I would definitely recommend giving it a go!

Good Mexican inspired food. The serving sizes were enormous and more than plenty to share. Margaritas were quite nice too. The inside seating is a bit tight and food isn’t authentic but overall it’s a great meal.

Delicious food in good quantity. Enough for sharing. Stuffed jalapeños & the sizzling chocolate brownie were the highlight of the evening. Must try😋😋

We ate four great tacos from here during the covid outbreak. Lovely staff, and the tacos were delicious. If you feel like some Mexican, give them a go.
Little Bit Of Everything
We have ordered for delivery from Amigos quite a few times. My favourite is their Vegetable Burritos and Pork Belly Tacos. Their food is simple, delicious and healthy. They use fresh produce which makes the difference.
They maintain their consistency when it comes to taste and portions. Their burritos are baked and pretty big in portion. Once you eat their burrito there is no other burrito you would want to eat. The pork belly is tender and cooked to perfection every single time.

I came here with a couple of friends after work before the covid-19 shutdown. The service was really friendly and attentive. I ordered a shredded beef burrito. Portion size was quite large and filling and it tasted fresh and cheesy.

We really enjoyed eating here! The staff were lovely and very attentive. The food came out quite fast and it was delicious and in a good serving size too.
Definitely recommend.

The best satisfacrion about having food is when you know if its fresh and a have a great taste.. and this place doesnt disappoint you. Great food with meager prices . Perfect combination

Good service and good location. Starter nachos were tasty and plentiful. Mains were heavily over-salted however, we had the paella and burrito. Nice atmosphere but the mains took a lot away from the experience.

The atmosphere was great, the food was delicious and the staff were friendly and attentive. I really liked the chilli con carne tacos. Made for a great date night, thank you.

This place is located in a great little laneway in the city full of cafes and restaurants. The food here is good and I’ve never had a bad experience. The place is also great for after work drinks as they do great Margaritas and have a few nice tequilas available.
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: hardware lane is always so busy - you can’t miss this place.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: ive tried the burrito here and it’s not only a big proportion but it tastes delicious. The ingredients in it are soo fresh and you can even taste the salsa. The nachos were also just as yummy

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: there’s a lot of crowd walking in and out of the strip but that’s what you get for a touristy strip! Inside dining is much better

🥇Lizzie rates overall: loved the food and I’m sure I’ll be back for more Mexican food!

Good...

Nestled in the busy Hardware Lane is Amigos, a non pretentious, fairly basic looking but decent restaurant.

The food was surprisingly delicious. Highly recommend getting the tapas menu. The Chips and Guac trio, the stuffed Jalepenos and the goats cheese arancini were really bloody good but in no way traditional Mexican food. The enchiladas were good, not great and the frozen margaritas were very weak and sugary.

The service was good and the staff friendly enough, overall, it exceeded my expectations and the prices are pretty reasonably. $80 for 2 people with a drink each and a fair amount of food.
Crabapples For Lunch
We had a couple of burritos here as well as a dessert, and everything was really good. The burritos come out piping hot, with the cheese oozing and melting, so it was really satisfying to eat. The chocolate brownie was likewise just as satisfying. The 2 brownies are served on a hot plate with 2 scoops of ice cream over the top of them. Then, they pour a ton of hot chocolate sauce right over it at the table. That sauce totally binds everything together and starts to make the ice cream melt onto the brownie. Just thinking about it actually makes me want to go back.

In terms of price, considering this place is located on Hardware lane and has a similar 'smart casual' dining experience, the price of the food isn't too bad, and is probably at least slightly cheaper than the surrounding restaurants. Service was friendly and the ambience was warm and cosy, so we were quite happy with the experience.
Tinmans Treats
I bought a takeaway burrito using the meal pal app, so my experience is not the usual dine in experience.

The burrito itself was decent, if I paid full price for it ($23) I might have different thoughts towards it but for what i paid $8, it was a decent meal. Decent fillings, good flavour. Did it change the world? No, but did it satisfy my hunger pangs... yes.

Service was friendly, and the interior is intimate cosy but has some ambiance, even on a quiet day. I'd actually like to dine here.

The food was really good and it is not costly at all. The deserts were good as well. Ambiance is normal which takes away 1 star for me. Service was alright as well.

It's good for office and family parties.
Inspired by Mexican food...or Italian or perhaps Chinese? Such an odd mixture, nothing really Mexican about the dish we ordered. It was supposed to be a sizzling fajita dish. The sizzling part was shrimp, chicken or chorizo sausage with a few strands of onions and one lonely slice of mushroom in the mix. The additions to add to the fajitas, cheese (extra charge), sour cream (extra charge), Chinese fried rice, a spoonful of refried beans, a handful of shredded lettuce with a spoon of mayo guacamole on top. Give this place a pass if you're in the mood for Mexican, you'll get a more authentic flavor at the fast food Taco Bill. So much disappointment/fail for such an easy dish to make.
Cass Windsor
Not really sure how else to put it...disgusting. Can not believe we paid $80 for dry chewy meat, burnt tortillas and what apparently was guacamole that looked like throw-up. This place used to be good - brought a friend before the footy based on my experience a little over a year ago however will not be recommending or coming back again. Considering the caliber of Mexican food in Melbourne these days, you’d better up your game quickly.
MoZza
Went here for dinner a couple of weeks back and it was very ordinary. Tacos were like they were bought in from a super market, meat was dry and chewy and guacamole was this horrible textured and tasteless green paste. Service was ordinary and food was overpriced.
ThatGuyWhoEats
Got a meal through mealpal. Had a chicken enchilada and it was bursting with flavour. Although it was very quiet (there was no one in there) compared to the other restaurants, this place is like a hidden gem. The enchilada was also a little spicy, though very manageable. Staff was very friendly and informative of the wait time as well.
Jayde
Been happy with my two experiences here burritos and enchiladas are really tasty. Not a fan of the guacamole, which seems like the squeeze avocado you can get from a bottle in supermarkets (for $2 extra!). Their lunch specials are very good value, and have had mostly friendly staff.
Foodandwinefan
From the 40 minute wait for food to the less than average supermarket grade tacos we were served up this place was a disaster. Even the grated cheese came from a packet. This place cannot call itself a mexican restaurant.
Jay Contor
Nestled in the busy Hardware Lane, don't be fooled by the somewhat plain exterior of this Mexican restaurant.

The lady serving us really knew her stuff, and although it wasn't busy it took a while for our mains to come out! That's not always a bad thing, as I believe it could be the first indicator of freshly made. And that's exactly the way it tasted.

The chicken, chorizo and prawn Paella was simply brilliant. It was hot (temperature), sizzling and had an abundance of taste. Nothing better than scraping grill bits of rice and chicken off the black hot plate!

The nachos were also fantastic, in particular the beef buried down the bottom. Affordable, peaceful & a pallet pleaser - you can't beat that!
Adele Edwards
We ordered the 3 Dips to share and it took way to long to come out and there excuse was a computer issue... the Dips were good but when there is 5ppl eating them the corn chip ratio was small and we had lots of dip left over. I got a large nachos and it was tiny and average. My partner got chicken fajitas and they were in a sort of tomato curry sauce it was more of an Indian tasting dish than mexican. They also use way to much coriander in all of there dishes. The place was loud manly from a group of girls downing margaritas who were clearly over intoxicated. The staff weren't very observant and we had to ask to order after being ignored for half an hour.
Kirsty Haggerty
Amigos is great for having a few drinks in the sun. It's on hardware lane too, which is always a great location. The food is pretty cheap and the staff are friendly. They do nice cocktails, I love their margarita's!
Good Food Good Mood
Cheese overload. I love cheese but I don't like this. Nachos to me were completely overpowered by the cheese to the point where they were unenjoyable and tasted quite oily. I then had a chicken burrito for my main which also had a high ratio of cheese. The rest of the flavours were simply lost amongst the melted dairy. I would not return here

Details: I hate giving bad reviews but the customer service experience was terrible. We brought these people 13 people all ordering a meal and heaps of drinks (a lot of money yeah), and they treated us (me) like crap.

My friend and I clearly asked for the red sangria jug (who even orders the white one)? As they made a mistake, it's only fair they bring back the one we asked for. First they disputed it about 3 times and kept on making us have the white one (unprofessional) then when they finally brought us the red one instead there was literally zero wine in it. It tasted like cordial. $35 later... an expensive jug of cordial. Another waitor was walking around so we thought perhaps there was something wrong with the drink as there was no wine.. he was quite friendly and added more red wine into it (it tasted slightly better).... wouldn't be surprised if our food was spat on by this point.

The waitress from the beginning, personally came up to our Table, stared at me in the eyes, greased me off and said "that wasn't me before, why would you tell that other guy. Thanks for that". It was ridiculously rude, so unprofessional and I do not understand how this girl is even getting paid to talk to her customers like that. I personally APOLOGIZED to her after this.... which I completely regret as I didn't pin point her beforehand

The food was actually okay and decor but NO WONDER the place was EMPTY on a Friday night...
TN
it is too expensive for under average food. A pork belly tacos with 3 tiny slices of pork bell for $8, what a joke.
Chorizo Fajitas is tasteless for $27.50

Had a lovely lunch with a friend here yesterday. First visit here, and had a great time. We sat outside in the sun, definitely enjoyed the food! Ordered Porterhouse Beef Fajitas to share with a Mexican Punch for myself and a Lemon-Lime Bitter for my friend. It was just nice to share between two. Service was good too.
Jean
This Amigos is pretty good although not fantastic. The food and service are nice but not really memorable enough to warrant or recommend repeat visits. Fine enough for a lunch option.
Sanj Tanya
Love the atmosphere and the people, food was lovely and definitely a place to try! Decent options for vegetarians as well and a large drinks menu which is great! Their wait times aren't too bad either!
Sophie S
Went here with table of 7 for lunch. Sat inside (although seemed quite nice outside) and was great to be able to hear my fellow tablemates for once! I give 4 stars because of any general Mexican place I've been (taco bills, mad Mex, etc) they been average at best & I was pleasantly surprised by my meal here. I got 2 soft tacos: beef and chicken. Looked pretty average but taste wise chicken was divine and the beef was also tasty albeit bit of a spice kick for me (I have almost zero tolerance for hot spicy but will always give it a go). Smelt some chocolate-wonder over at another table so we got some brownies to share for the table (2 brownies per serve) which was more than enough chocolate heaven although they were more cake then brownie. Would definitely go back & try something else!

We went to Amigos on Hardware Lane on a week night for dinner. We had the chorizo mushroom and cream cheese quesadillas, classic nachos, fish taco, pork belly taco, sizzling brownie, churros, flan de queso, and the passion and original margaritas. It was quite the meal and really enjoyable. It's more of a Mexican fusion restaurant so many of the dishes do a different take, for example the chips in the nachos are thick and lined up on their side, rather than piled. The nachos had a generous amount of topping and the chips were fresh and crispy. I preferred the fish taco over the pork belly taco, but both were delicious and well seasoned. My absolute favorite part of the meal were the quesadillas since the cream cheese adds a different flavor and texture to the dish; it was very addictive and the main reason I would come back. We ended off with one of every dessert. The brownies were good and warm, with a bit of a theatrical show when you pour the sauce onto the hot plate. The churros were exactly as you'd expect them to be. The flan de queso was a rich, creamy dessert, sort of like a cheese cake and was very decadent. The margaritas we had were top notch and you could really taste the high quality of the ingredients used to make them. The location and service were great! Great experience overall and highly recommended.
The Dear Luncher
The Dear Luncher enjoys margaritas and these guys pump out decent ones. As for the food, well it's just decent; nothing more nothing less. The Dear Luncher's most recent visit to Amigo's resulted in some tacos being consumed. The chicken taco was uninspiring. Bugger all chicken inside. The shredded beef taco however, did all the heavy lifting and improved the experience somewhat. Sour cream and guacamole were requested to accompany the tacos and did not arrive initially, they had to be requested. Ergo, points lost. Not a bad place to dine but there are better Mexican choices out there.
Sampath Soysa
Stale corn chips in the nachos, inattentive hostess for the alfresco/outdoor seating area and chef's menu didn't include Mexican soft drinks, only the cheaper Coke, Sprite etc which, at that price point, is not cool.
Kylie
I like how this place is located in an area with other restaurants as well, in Hardware Lane. My friend wanted to try this place out so I was like sure, why not - usually it's me who makes decisions about where to eat so I was glad he chose a place.
We decided to sit inside rather than outside, it was rather sunny and I didn't want to get burnt. Had to walk down some stairs before we got inside to see a bar and a fan. I'm guessing they also cater well for a dinner with drinks on the side to spice it up.
The waitress was not very nice but efficient which was fine, I ordered a shredded beef Enchilada and my friend got the shredded beef Burrito. The plates came super hot (couldn't even touch the plate without feeling burnt). Because it was lunch, we also got a free drink with the meal (only from the special lunch menu).
I don't usually eat Mexican food like the way they prepared it. I really liked it though, the meal was great, the enchilada had a lot of flavour, however the rice on the side was a bit bland and needed to be eaten with the enchilada and beans. It was a good portion size as well, was very satisfying. The cheese really gave the meal a nice taste to it, usually I don't have cheese with Mexican meals.
Afterwards I asked where the toilets were, then when I went I had to climb 3 flight of stairs, which wasn't very good, especially because on one level there were a few office rooms. Felt a bit awkward. Would be terrible for people who come over for drinks I'd imagine, for them to be tipsy and going up the stairs. Such a challenge.

TLDR: Overall, was a decent experience, the staff was efficient and well-mannered enough, the meals were a great size and had a nice combination of flavours and was worth the price, the toilets were very high up, had to walk a few flight of stairs to get to it, otherwise would recommend if you wanted to go to a place that had alcoholic drinks as well for a dinner. However, personally I'd try out other Mexican places that are around in the CBD.

We missed happy hour but the sangria was still great. Service was spot on, food delivered promptly. So many stuffed jalapenos we couldn't eat them all. Mains were deliciously hot, I ordered vegetarian enchiladas beautiful. Partner ordered beef Colorado too much to finish, still delicious.
Stephy_NakiGirl
I often eat here whenever in the city although the service can sometimes be patchy. The restaurant also doesn't offer the specials that most of the other locations in the lane do to get customers in.
Having said that the cocktails are great - we struck happy hour which is always a bonus. Their margaritas & Mojitos are great.
For meals we tried the chicken & fish hard tacos ($7.50ea) and the chicken enchilada which was yum.
Great to sit outside if you can & soak up the atmosphere of the laneway.
Alana
Such a disappointment. The service was terrible, with the waiter hiding until after Happy Hour to serve us even though we arrived with plenty of time to order drinks. We also spotted two of the chefs glued to their phones instead of cooking meals. There was chili in every part of the dish and the sour cream was a fancy drizzle over the main rather than a proper serving. The drinks were fantastic, but they just weren't worth it. Never again.
Bobby
Staff were friendly but food was too salty and overpriced. The $8 tacos were small and the $28 fejitas we got was too hot so all the sauce disappeared and the portion itself was quite small, and it was very salty.
Giorgio Barcaiolo Battaglini
It would be a 3 but you can not just ignore that the staff is very good and hardware lane is full of charm. However, the food is ok but nothing stunning and plating it's not good. And coffee it's very average. I'll try again, the staff deserves it

Very comfortable place... amazing food, fast service and very polite staff. I had a great time and I completely recommend! I will be back for sure!
Merlin
A little bit of Latin America in the middle of the city. Often come and visit with some mates and share a plate of nachos. Nice big plate and not skimpy on toppings.
Tahleah Faoro
We had the nachos, chimichangas and fish enchiladas and they were amazing. Nachos was fresh and the cheese was layered in between each nacho - it was so good! The service was great too. I'll definitely come again.
Amy Sharma
Have been here a couple of times for dinner and have been very impressed! Waiters were lovely and although one of my friends had allergies they were very accommodating. All our meals were delicious (pork belly taco was incredible) and the red and white sangrias were so yummy and full of flavour. Wish I'd had room for dessert- next time I need to get the sizzling brownie!
Lisa Hunter
The absolute BEST Mexican we have ever had.
This is one of my favourite places, I have been a few times now and I have never been disappointed.
The nachos have been our favourite every time.

Everyone needs to go here you will not regret it.
Alex Moore
Been here a couple of time now and I am a big fan. First time I ordered my all time favourite chicken fajita. Was the tortia wraps were a little larger other then that the flavour combo was on point, also had the nachos for an entree and they were "nacho bad" (not so bad). Second time I came I got a chimi changa which was solid and again the flavour combo was on point. Both times my girlfriend had a vegetarian enchilada which she thoroughly enjoyed. I am the city this weekend and will probably be stopping by again. Also got to point out the amazing staff.
M. T.
Food was well seasoned and servings were very generous. The "small" nachos was not at all "small" - there was enough to feed 3 people as a main. The chicken skewers were wonderful and prawns were cooked to perfection; stuffed jalapeños were also full of flavour - croquettes were less extravagant in comparison. We sat outside with our dog and the waitress was absolutely lovely about it.
Cihan
Went here for a mates birthday and it was such a nice place the meat is so good! Not really a fan of the sangria but that's only because it had cinnamon in it and I hate cinnamon. Other then that it was a really nice night
Prithvi Polimera
Lovely place with an outside seating ad a cellar seating with an underwhelming ambience. Food was on time and the service was also decent. Taste was top notch!
Ben Hogan
I love this place and I originally discovered it via the Chapel St site, but I'd love if they brought back the signature burritos with more interesting flavours.
Rishabh Shukla
It was my first venture in this Mexican food chain and I had a lot of expectations when I reached here. Being on the hardware lane itself puts a lot of expectations!
Ambience (3/5) - Its good to be seated outside where one can enjoy the complete view of the lane but I prefer the one at the balcony (which I was lucky to get) as it is a little silent and has privacy.
Food (2.5/5) - Started with the dip with corn chips and it was too much! By the end it had become more of a responsibility to finish it! Veg fajita was slightly overpriced. Both tasted decent.
Cocktails were ordinary and after visiting their website I was expecting more.
Service (3/5) - Again good but nothing special about it.
KLLYXNG
Food came out on time and every dish was warm, flavourful and delicious.
The staff were very friendly, accommodating with our last minute booking change. Will return one day!

What a place! Went here the other night with a group of friends and loved it. Food was delicious and all agreed we would be back. I personally ordered the Chimichanga and the 1L red sangria. Was very filling and so cheesy! Some portions my friends ordered were on the small side though.
Tehlia Jade
Was recommended to come here. Wasn't happy with the meals. We all got nachos and there was hardly a difference between the small and big. The nachos were very plain and very scabby on the meat. Even the drinks were small and overpriced. Sangria was a small glass. I love Mexican but this is defiantly not a favourite. Wouldn't recommend, maybe it was what we choose.
Ben
The food was great - which is normally enough, but we had twenty people booking two weeks in advance and they seemed to not be prepared at all - in over two hours we received some chips and dip and a small serve of chimi changas. The main paella came out about 15 min later, which was lucky because we only had about 20 min to make our two and a half hour appointment which we thought was long enough. The vegetarian starter had chicken it, and the main also had a few 'stray pieces' of chicken but we did not want to delay things any longer than we already had been so picked it out and put up with it. Many small tables came and went having full meals in this time which was really disappointing….especially when you have an $800 bill and feel really unsatisfied,
Jacqui Keenan
Absolutely wonderful!!!!
Stopped by for a quick dinner before heading to the airport. In a lane way full of pushy and in your face people all trying to pull you into their own restaurant, this place was chilled and relaxed, allowing me to make my own decision. When I mentioned I was catching a flight they got my order out promptly and it was so delicious. I ordered a lemon margarita on the rocks and trio of dips (chilli con queso, guacamole and salsa).
So glad I ended my trip by coming here.
Eden Edwards
The beat Mexican I have had in Melbourne. Love the food, the tequila selection is amazing and I have always had a great night. Don't think the menu has changed in over the year (not that I mind), but seems to have turned over it await staff.
Juicy Glutes
Came here for dinner last night with you guessed it, my amazing husband! Yay!!!

The first waitress who greeted us was great. She was friendly and promptly took our drink order and corn chips and dips. The drinks came out quick and I love their strawberry margarita. It is delicious and they go down way tooooo qucikly. The dips and corn chips were good too.

We told her that we wanted to wait awhile before we ordered our mains. Ok, a normal person would check in like 20minutes and see if you were ready, but no like 2 hours later someone came over to check if we wanted mains. I didn't mind cause I had four strawberry margaritas by this time. I got the chicken salad and was disappointed cause they did not put my jalopenas in there. I did not complain because nothing could get my spirits down on this Thursday night.

It was ok.. I had fun but they really need to step up their game when it comes to service. I am only being nice cause I had one too many and was in a good mood.
Simrata Anand
Went there for an afternoon lunch and was disappointed with the dingy dark setting. Food was not bad however I come to place for ambiance and this did not hit the mark for me.
Melissa
Pretty disappointed with my visit to the CBD Amigos. Being a big fan of the Amigos franchise, this did not deliver.

Our table ordered the classic nachos to share, and had the mixed beef and chicken fajitas. The nachos were very bland, and the beef fajitas were very chewy. The sides were also lacking.

But this is not why this restaurant were scored a 2/5. It was the service that overall brought the score down. It wasn't even a couple of minutes after our plates were taken away that we were asked if we were leaving. When we said not yet, and that we would like to order a few more drinks and possibly dessert, they were not happy, and we were made very unwelcome for the rest of our evening due to their dirty looks.

Considering that we made a booking prior to arrival, and that we ordered and ate within 40 minutes, I do not understand why the rush, when we intended to spend more!

We decided to leave and take our service elsewhere 10 minutes after that happened. Funnily enough their friendly service came back the minute we paid our bill.
Nelly
My advice is to come hungry. This is a small place but nice. The food is packed full of flavour and the waiters helpful but need to learn more about the food they're serving as when we were asking questions they had no idea what we were asking???

But the food made up for it & the chef helped the staff clarify.
Snooter2Tooter
Started well, the stuffed jalapeños were really good. I had a mixed fajita, the chicken was good, the beef not so good. Service not the most attentive and feel they would really struggle on a busy night.
Kamesh Krishnan
Nachos.... One of the best place to have in Melbourne CBD n no wonder they have all Mexican drinks(SOL)....!!!! Ambience inside n outdoor seating during happy hours are the best..
Laura Moulton
Amazing food. Nachos and burritos! A must try in Melbourne!!
Amanda Forde
Food was awesome cocktails were even better!
Gina
Okay... Had nachos and tacos with chief chef house sauces. Brilliant grilled chicken tacos and red hot sauce!!
Melbsgaleater
Nachos were amazingggg!!!

Absolutely amazing burritoand sangria. Vegetaian burrito and fajitas are my favorite! Food here is consistantly amazing! Sangria is lovely too!
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
Although the menu description made it sound like it would be quite sweet, it was more salty than sweet, which actually suited me better. The chicken was pretty tasty, not dry, and the mix of grilled and raw vegetables lent the dish a variety of flavours and textures. Great Place. Margaritas here are great, very tasty and well mixed. Sangria was also pretty good, but maybe needs pieces of fruit to bump it up a notch. I had a chimmi changa for my main, which was delicious. Chunky pieces of tasty, tender beef, thick smooth sauce, tangy black beans and fresh salsa. Also, hang around til 9pm to get fresh hot dark chocolate sauce drenched churros for $9.

Also, the service was great, right balance of attentive but not bothersome.

All round, great place I will definitely be coming back to.
OiChefJess
Yummy food, but not authentic. Hubs and I chose this spot to eat because they weren't pushy when walking past the menu. All the other restaurants had hosts standing outside running up to you and begging you to look and their menu and eat there, sorta pathetic and really deterred us! Being from SoCal I was skeptical of eating Mexican food on this side of the pacific but it actually wasn't that bad. We shared the chorizo nachos which came with heaps of cheese and guac. Also had the prawns salad with a ton of prawns and fresh veggies, I would come back just for that salad! Sangria was a miss though, no fruit served with it and sorta meh tasting, next time I'd try a margarita. Nice staff, uncomfortable patio chairs.
Grantp
Great food, great service!. One of the few restaurants in hardware lane that doesn't aggressively try and pull you in. Food was great, service was great, and staff were very warm and friendly. Would highly reccomend the enchiladas!
Kab
We go to this restaurant whenever we in Melbourne and have always loved it bit i dont think we will be back!! the food has changed and altho we know Mexican has always been a bit more expensive we have always been happy to pay for great food and a great dining experience :( sad about this!! $27 for chicken fahitas not much chicken on the sizzle plate and only 3 tortillas then u have to pay extra for grated xheese and sour cream it just really is ridiculous oh well adios amigos!!
Starling
Cheerful Mexican. Amigos in Hardware Lane: The service was cheerful, and the food was good and plentiful. The food is not the best Mexican, but it is not terrible either. We had the chicken fajitas shared plate, and there was plenty to go around. The chorizo quesadilla as an entree was a great hit. The one thing I would change were the outdoor seats. They are uncomfortable and don't provide any support. Perhaps that is to prevent people from loitering at the tables after they've finished eating? Overall, fairly good food.
Anmol Sekhon
Outdoor seats are not comfortable at all. Food was good but change the outdoor seats please.
Emmascircus
Service completely ruined my night. I have not been in a restuarant in a long time where the service actually ruined the meal. I actually love the food & when I lived in Prahran it was a favourite restaurant for my partner & I to visit. However the hardware lane restaurant is nothing like south yarra. I felt like I was imposing on them, there was not hello & once we had ordered & food was delivered no one came past to check if we needed another drink, if the food was ok etc... Nothing. Not interested in going back.

Lovely food and sangria shame about the lady with white hair pressuring us to order when we'd only just got there and just having a drink and catch up. She kept coming up to us asking us to order food when we were not ready in the end we just ordered to get her off our back so we could relax and enjoy catch up in peace. Probably won't go back because of this.

Pathetic staff having siestas!. Woeful service. Waited 30 minutes for food, complained then was told another 30 minutes. We decided to leave, and owner didn't even offer to pay for drinks. You'd think 8 unhappy customers is worse than $30 worth of drinks to a business. DO NOT GO HERE

Not worth it. A 'Mexican' place that sells American food (Chilli can Carne), makes European cocktails (Spanish sangria), and plays Argentiean and European music. The cultural incongruency screams "not awesome", but gave it a go just for laughs. The sangria was foul, red orange juice with water; and the chilli con carne tasted like it came out of a can. Happy we didn't order a main.

Not good enough. The old amigos was the standard, now they have increased prices and offer smaller servings. Feels like they have cheaped out. Will not return.

Really enjoyed the food. Had a trio of dips to start, chicken fajitas, churros for dessert. Everything was yummy. Gorgeous place in Hardware Lane, nice decor, but a bit squished in, hard to walk around the tables. Staff were great - really lovely service. Happy hour drink prices were good. Food a bit pricey, but around average for Mexican food. About $50 a head for our drinks, main, and shared entree and dessert. Sangria was really good, and $5 during happy hour. Enjoyed it.

Amazing food and fantastic service. Will defiantly come back when I visit Melbourne again

Awesome food and excellent staff.

No longer a fan. I used to enjoy Amigos but after my last couple of experiences I won't be returning. The food is fine, it's decent American style Mexican, quick easy and tasty. The problem is the prices. I eat at a number of very similar Mexican restaurants and Amigos is way, way overpriced. $7 for extra corn chips for an already over priced dips?? Not on.

Westernised Mexican a real let down. Authentic Mexican is a sensational delight. However, Amigos is no where close to authentic Mexican. I would call it "Tex Mex". In other words, a fast food version of real Mexican. Authentic Mexican sets the taste buds on an exciting race. Amigos blands down the spiciness to the extent it is ordinary. In not wanting to offend anyone with spice and racy taste they end up with a bland product. The serving sizes are good. The sangria is great, But the food is a BIG disappointment.

Good. Three of us went here for dinner on a Friday night and really enjoyed it. Loved all the food & drinks and they had the best chilli con carne. I wish I knew of this place sooner as we only went there on the last night we had in Melbourne. The only downside was the service, although the staff were nice & friendly we had to constantly remind them of our drinks which kept taking ages to come out. I would eat here again, hoping that their service is better next time.

Meh Mexican. Firstly, the seating and arrangement of this restaurant is so tight that it makes for a very uncomfortable dining experience, trying to go to the bathroom I had to squeeze past a large table of around 12 and interrupt them mid-dinner.
The waiting staff weren't very polite, and mixed up our drink orders.
We had the set menu - the nachos were good, but the fajitas etc I didn't really rate at all - stock standard Mexican. You can spend $35 and go to one of the better Mexican places in Melbourne.

Sometimes you get lucky.... Dining by myself, and wandering down Hardware Lane, chose this place as 1. It appeared to have one of the best like% of the restaurants & 2. There was no obnoxious spur inker out the front. Was impressed by the list of tequila & margaritas on offer. Had the chicken & chorizo fajitas, which were nice, but I had to order 2 more tortillas, which it was charged for, and they forgot my side of sour cream. Service was haphazard, great to start with, but tapered off very quickly. Overall, OK but not what you would call cheap. Experience was probably not helped by having 2 Fwits sit next to me, who knew everything about everything, even the stuff they knew nothing about!
Not sure why it has so many likes, unless the other places in Hardware Ln are really bad.
Next time, I'll go with one of the spruikers and take my chances.

Had work Xmas dinner there Sat night. Service was pleasant but slow. Food was nothing to write home about. Extremely pricey for rather bland meals. Only saving grace the creamy prawn & chicken. The churros were good but the choc sauce tasted like bottled ice cream topping. Not what you expect from a pricey place. Not in a hurry to return.

Enjoyable. I went with my partner on a Thursday night. We had the Chef's Menu at 35pp. It was a very enjoyable meal, the food was nice, the staff lovely. We were one of only two groups of people at the restaurant. Admittedly, food was a little overpriced and whilst the frozen margarita was superb, it too was a toch pricey. Nonetheless a lovely experience.

A little pricey but we had delicious food and the gin sangria sling is amazing!

Not Recommended. I've ordered takeaway food from Amigos and I have also eaten in the restaurant. Unless you are a fan of non authentic, "Tex Mex", heavy style Mexican then I wouldn't recommend this restaurant (for example, I've had better, fresher, cheaper food at Mad Mex).

Take away: The delivery was late, cold, soggy and almost inedible. The only passable dishes (whether you are ordering takeaway or eating out) are the appetizers and the chips/dip plate.

Eating out: Amigos often have meal and drink specials. The cocktails were cheap, tasty and the atmosphere made the restaurant an enjoyable place to have sit and enjoy a cold drink. But, unfortunately it's not a bar and although I enjoyed the cocktails, the food was under par. The pricing and serving sizes are quite reasonable (but the quality leaves you feeling like it was actually over priced). On a more positive note, the food came out quickly, the service was good, the staff were polite and had a good knowledge of the menu.

Delicious cocktails. This place is amazing and consistent. The menu is fresh and their take on Mexican food is simple but tasty.

Fantatic food, wine, service. I had dinner at Amigos last night. I ordered the spinach and potato enchiladas with a Spanish shiraz. The service is fantastic. The food was very tasty and a large portion. The wine was amazing. I will definitely be back.

Fantastic. Food is tasty and staff are wonderful. Be sure to say hello to Lai Lin, the charming Singaporean waiter and fine example of friendly service.

Hardware lane is a snack, Chapel st is a meal for the same price. Enough said.

Was dreadful !! Could have made better myself at home !! Or as I said on my face book status a a goat herder from the Swiss alps could have made better Mexican food ! Awful don't bother !!

I used to come here a lot. The male Asian waiter is really lovely and efficient. The food is yum and decently priced. Lunch specials are great. However last time we were there, despite checking whether it was okay or not to split bills and being assured we could, the girl at the cashier was so rude and unfriendly when we paid. She has kind of red or purple hair and is a grump. Totally put me off the place.

Prawn and scallop paella amazing, service always great, love this place!
