Great little place for Gua Bao! Although I'm usually more fond of the braised pork, I definitely recommend the chicken! Full of flavour with a little bit of spice, so good! We will definitely be back the next time we're in Melbourne!

I had Wonderbao for the first time last year at the noodle markets and it was worth waiting in line for. But last week I went to the shop and also had the soy milk- it was really yummy! It's not like your average soy milk that you pour onto your cereal.

Wonderbao is a bit of a Melbourne institution. With the ongoing seemingly never ending restrictions, thank the bao gods that Wonderbao delivers! I received a pack of these frozen pork buns from my sister and I could not wait to try them.

Having used to visit their store (near RMIT) after work, it really was a bit of a novelty to be able to warm these buns of joy in the comfort of my home. The soft pillowy bao was delicious and the char siu filling was top notch. The flavours were beautiful and clean.

I wonder when I will be able to once again wander into Wonderbao in the city....hopefully not long now!

Previously:

Looking for Wonderbao is like going on a treasure hunt. It's not easy to find (especially with all that train station construction going on) but it's certainly well worth the hunt.

I had the crispy chicken guabao today. The bun itself was amazingly soft and fluffy. It was like eating a cloud. The chicken had a nice crispy coating and the coleslaw on top was slightly gluggy but otherwise fresh and tasty. Service was quick but there was very little seating for customers.

I absolutely love Wonderbao! It's hard not to get one of their juicy baos whenever I pass by :) Grabbed Braised Pork Belly Gua Bao & Fried Chicken Gua Bao. Bao buns were soft and fluffy and full of delicious fillings! Loved braised pork - juicy inside and crunchy outside with crushed nuts. Fried chicken blew me away as well - super crispy with right amount of seasoning and sauce :) Highly recommend this joint!

Delicious snack but long wait during lunch. They need to stop doing Deliveroo/Ubereats during lunch time as it holds up everyone physically there. I’ve been there when they have been trying to meet massive delivery orders. Or have more staff.

Excellent bao! The steamed bun was super soft and delicious, and the fried chicken was crispy and juicy. No complaints except for the price at QVM - $15 for 2 bao is pretty steep.

This is a small hole in the wall restaurant on a'Beckett st. They have some bar stools, but not a place you can really sit and eat. I ordered the chicken bao and roast pork belly bao, but any bao you buy will be delicious. The popcorn chicken is also a must-try! Will come here again!

Wonderbao at Summer Night Market. Good food and company makes life a little bit more satisfying. Nothing could go wrong with a perfectly made Gua bao.

A bite sized treats with a section of toppings and flavours. From chicken to pork and your vegetarian options.

Popping by the night market? Be sure to give the baos and bite. I rate it.

Love a good bao. We ordered the crispy chicken (delicious), bbq pork (give me more) and tofu (not our vibe). 2 out of 3 stars! The 2 we loved were full of flavour, fresh and had a good ratio of meat, bun, toppings. Wonderbao is always a popular choice.

First time trying these great baos at their stall at the Noodle Night Market! I chose the gua baos combo which contained the three fillings of fried chicken, roast pork belly and fried tofu. All three flavours were delicious and super filling. The filled baos looked great too which I would love to try next time!

Want a quick and not too unhealthy meal? Wonderbao is here for you! 🤩

They’ve always been on my foodie bucket list and since I LOVE taro, this was definitely a place that I was dying to visit and because I grew up eating bao’s I held a high standard and wonderbao did NOT disappoint! Their baos were super duper fluffy and absolutely delicious! The taro bao was full of taro flavour and super fragrant and with the soft pillowy bao, it was perfect! The BBQ Pork Bao was delicious and a beautiful marriage of flavours between sweet and salty! And finally the gua bao was absolutely delicious and worth every single penny! It was super succulent and cooked so perfectly! I loved everything I got and definitely would return again!

Simple review to say it all.

Service was good. friendly staff. prices are reasonable for the quality of the bao bun and the toppings inside. I gave it 4 though because I do find that the protein and filling can be relatively inconsistent sometimes depending on who prepares your food as I got a really small single piece of fried chicken once but the next person who was served by someone else got 2 pieces in their bao.

That being said, quality of all their buns are perfect. Super soft and warm to touch. Filling is flavourful and not overpowering. Pairs very nicely with each flavour combo. Pork belly isnt overly fatty but has a good texture.

Sometimes they have deals with EatClubb or Ritual, so doesnt hurt to check those food apps. Havent tried their special ones yet like their dessert baos or the soft shell one, but would love to try.

Gua bao ($5.40) ⭐️ 4.5/5 ⭐️
Taro bao ($2.50) ⭐️ 3.5/5 ⭐️
🍴Enjoyable and affordable variety of chinese baos at this tiny shop with about 5 chairs for dining in. The braised pork belly came with sour vegetables, pickled mustard, and crushed peanuts while the roast pork belly was a more sweet-sour mix with the sweet hosin sauce balancing nicely with the pickled carrots and cucumber. For $5.40, it comes with quite a generous huge slab of tender and well-seasoned pork meat which justified the price and we found both #guabao to be flavourful and well-balanced with the meat and vegetables. The #tarobao was fluffy and light but while I appreciated that it wasn’t sweet, it could do with more flavour.

Searching for Wonderbao is a bit of a treasure hunt, as it's well hidden down one of the CBDs many streets and it's a very small shop front. Nothing spectacular about the venue and it has very little seating. However, it was really busy and the staff were great under pressure.

We ordered a traditional box and it had four steamed buns with a variety of fillings. I found the bun to filling ratio to be a little off. The fillings were delicious, but could have been more plentiful. The dough is puffy but quite sweet, so the savoury fillings offset that well.

I loved the egg custard bun as it wasn't too sweet and the custard was smooth and silky. The pork and chicken fillings also had a great balance of flavours.

The popularity of Wonderbao proves it's success. I would love to see it in a bigger venue with more ample seating, and I'm keen to try the other style of bao; so another visit is in order.

❤️ Braised pork belly gua bao ($5.50); roast pork belly gua bao ($5.50)

👥 Sharing uncommon; one person could finish at least two gua bao ($11/pp) and be moderately full

👍 Friendly customer service; fantastic flavours in both the gua baos; fresh salad; very tender meat

👎 Outside construction marred the view looking outside; construction makes this a difficult-to-find restaurant

🕓 Not busy at 9 PM, Friday night

Small place hidden near RMIT University. A decently small menu with good options for everyone. I had a couple of products here and thought they were really good.

I have tried the tofu gua bao and the eggplant gua bao. Both the tofu and eggplant were in a tempura batter, making it crispy. The sauce added extra flavour to the baos. My favourite was the tofu one. Both bao (buns) were light and fluffy, very soft when I take a bite. I have also tried the taro crisp, which were surprisingly delicious, not sweet like taro but more salty. They costed us $6.00. My mum and I loved it.

Finally, my mum had the mushroom bao burger, which she thought it was good. However, I don’t think they give us the black sesame bao style buns, as they were pure white buns instead...

Prices were alright. Honestly not worth it to me. The gua baos costed $5.2 for one but they were decent small sizes, just with simple ingredients.
The bao burger was small for almost paying $10.00 for it.

Next time if I come here, I would buy the set options.

Wonderbao sells these deliciously soft and tasty “guabaos” which are essentially soft buns with fillings. We tried their trio of buns and ordered fried chicken, crispy eggplant and braised pork belly.. they were delightful as snacks and has a good spin to these traditional Chinese staples..
Highly recommended for a quick snack or if you are not after super filling..
The location is a bit hard to find being in an arcade.. the shop itself was tiny with a few seats but it was a bit too messy at the end of the day with trash cans sitting obviously in the front of the shop..

I much prefer the gua baos to the traditional baos purely because they have better flavour balance.
Have tried most of the gua baos and they are all good, but the fried tofu is what keeps me coming back. Add some sriracha for some extra kick and it’s a perfect snack or meal, always!

A quaint, hidden place, yet always crowded. One of the most popular cheap meals under $10 in Melbourne. I loved the gua baos, which were fluffy and soft. The traditional bao, not so much. The bread tend to be too much. The gua baos were filled with choice of filling, veggies, and sauce. The sauce was very flavourful. One of my favourites was the pork floss mantou, crispy, both sweet and savoury mantou. Recommended!

😱Lizzie’s first impression: being a massive asian fusion fan - these baos are right up my alley.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I love how tender all of the meats are and how flavoursome each bao is - you can really tell they make each one with love.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: although they sell it for a steeper price especially during pop ups I think the baos are well worth it.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great place for baos and one of the best I’ve had in Melbourne.

Heard a lot of hype about wonderbao, and finally had the chance to try it out! The gua baos were definitely flavourful, but lacked some sauce for my liking. The char siu bao by far was the tastiest with tender pork and sweetness that wasn't sickly sweet at all. Would come again to try the sides and other varieties of baos they have! Only downside is the limited seated inside and price as they are quite expensive esp for one gua bao- but they do have a variety of packs you can order!

The baos this place serves is amazing.

Extreme care and flavour has been given to each and every variety of bao on the menu. I’ve had this many times and it has never crossed my mind to review them as it’s more or less a staple for me these days. The braised pork belly Gua bao is my favorite. The crispy chicken comes a close second.

The only tiny detail that they might miss is to add a little more sauce to each variety- especially the grilled pork gua bao - but I also do understand they want to keep the baos as “clean” to eat as much as possible. As it’s just a 2 minute walk from my apartment, im already looking forward to my next trip!

Ate here on a 30% off voucher. I had a few of the gua baos at $5.20 each (full price). The ingredients used were all well prepared. The braised pork one was very nice - generous amount of pork belly and is how gua baos are traditionally served. The crispy pork belly bao wasn't all that crispy, but still tasted good. The crispy chicken was tasty but I got quite a small piece - too small for the size of the bun. The fried eggplant was more generous and also nicely fried while being moist on the inside.

The store itself is very small and located away from the main streets. There is only a single counter with 5 seats, so most people will order to takeaway. At the discounted price, I got 4 baos for $14, which was pretty good value for money. At full price though, 3 baos would cost over $15, and I'm not sure I would find it as filling as a good sized burger of a similar price.

Nevertheless, the menu is pretty good and they are good at what they do.

Tucked away in a quiet street just in the outskirts of Melbourne CBD shopping district you’d find this AMAZING joint. Just by walking in you can smell and see fresh baos being cooked and served. We ordered the crispy chicken, braised pork belly and roast pork belly gua baos and soft shell crab bao burgers. Every single one of these baos were absolutely delicious. Our personal favourites were the crispy chicken gua bao. The tenderness of the chicken was unreal and made us wanting more. The four dishes only totalled up to around $25 and were very very filling.
We ordered some takeaway traditional cha siu baos and Chinese sausage baos. All were just as amazing and very cheap totalling just shy of $7.
Amazing cheap eatery, will definitely come back and recommend to others.

(3.5) A gem tucked away! We ordered the chinese sausage, taro, da chicken bao (chicken and mushroom) and choi (veggie) bao as well as the pork belly and roast pork gua bao. All the buns were well made and soft, with the filling flavours robust and complementary. Highlights in particular: the softness and flavours of the gua baos, as well as the taro bao. However, the only main criticism I have is with the chinese sausage bao. It was definitely cute with the puffed, cloud roll appearance, but the filling only contained one half of a halved-lengthwise slice of chinese sausage (nothing else!). This made it a bit dry to eat. Otherwise thumbs up, definitely recommend for a quick snack/meal on the go.

Melbourne’s weather is starting to heat up lately but this Morning it was a little chilly so we decided to get some baos to warm up our body (and soul too?). We always read good reviews about wonderbao but never got to to try them, so we thought this was the perfect time. The place was quite hidden in alley between a’beckett and little la trobe street. And there was only a few seatings if you want to eat there. We ordered a bunch of baos here: the traditional wonders pack and the gua bao pack. So we got 7 rather huge baos in total. All of them were awesome, full of flavour and the dough were so moist and fluffy. Definitely should add some sriracha sauce to give more punch to them, especially to the pork belly ones and the fried chicken one. As for the price point, they were a bit expensive but the portion and the quality of the food were definitely on par. We had very happy tummies.

Came across this place as I was googling for cheap places in Melbourne. It's alittle hard to find even using Google maps. A place with seating for around 5-6 people, yet attracts a big crowd for a snack on the go.
Upon the recommendation of the cashier, I ordered Choi bao, char siu bao and the roast pork belly one. The baos were soft and nice with a filling of chicken inside a soft and moist bao. The roast pork belly was however a very bad expericene which the onions and cucumber which I don't eat filled with a slightly undercooked pork chunk.
A very good deal for the price however and don't forget to use their Sriracha based sauce with the bao.

Wonderbao served simple, delicious baos which were also very good value. The baos were white soft bun served with a filling of your choice - braised pork belly was my favourite. Service was average; they got my order wrong once, possibly due to the fast paced nature of the eatery. It was also so hard to find this place; the area was maze like; it was easier to find them at the Night Noodle Market!

The gua bao from here just 10/10, love all of them is a must try. Service friendly, always a smile 10/10. The bun always get to you when steaming hot with mouthwatering filling inside. I THINK I AM ADDICTED

If you love them buns, you gotta check this place out! I'm a big fan of their Gua Baos. It's crazy yum! The buns are so soft and the fillings are crunchy! I'd recommend the fried chicken, crispy tofu and crispy pork!

Stumbled upon this place years ago when I just moved to Melbourne. On a cold wet winter night, I found myself craving for some siopao and I just had to satisfy my cravings. Otherwise, I'll go insane. While they still have traditional baos, they also do wondrous plays on gua baos.

Haven't been back for a while now but I heard the quality diminished over time. Will definitely give it another go just to check the quality.
