Review Melbourne Public - Melbourne

RL
Yum at good prices! There was a live performance as well, which was great. My friend requested for our table to be wiped clean; the lady staff just gave him a piece of cloth for him to wipe it off himself. It was OK, maybe the staff was busy, but quite a funny experience. 😅

Nice busy pub by the promenade. Great for a stop after shopping or just if you are passing by. Good cocktails, plenty of beer to chose from and very kind service. The burger sliders were ok. The only downside is that restrooms are up stairs which will get kind of far after a few drinks.

We came here for their Happy Hour... which is every Thursday & Friday between 4pm – 7pm, where you can get Espresso Martini, Gin Pink & Tonic, selected local pints, and cider pints for $10 each. It's safe to say that we had 3 rounds of their amazing Espresso Martini and left very happy! I definitely want to come back on Sunday as I was told that’s when they have their live band after 2pm.

We we're happy to see a bar open late at night which wasn't "too crowded". Staff were great! It was pretty toasty too even though we were seated in their tables outside in this winter weather. 👌👌👌 Patrons dancing to the live band had an awesome time inside too! ❤

Best place to have a night out with colleges! Best salt&pepper squid! 5 🌟 👌 👍

Awesome pub. Went for a comedy gig, perfect space for it. Great atmosphere to have a laugh or crack a joke. Incredibly easy to get to and dangerously close to the roulette tables. A must visit for a beer or a footy game. Gotta go for it, definitely don’t walk past it. Tap beers galore.
Adrian Bandaratilleke
Amazing atmosphere! The staff was very friendly and super efficient. The “Jam Donut” is the best and you should definitely try it out ! All facilities were top class.
Phrolox
One of the worst restaurants I've ever been to. Ordered a blue steak with no sauce. Received medium rare with no seasoning and burnt chips. The music also makes it impossible to hear the person next to you and borders on ear damage.
Kerry Campbell
A hidden gem, great atmosphere and friendly staff. We stopped for brunch on the weekend and the food and service did not disappoint, we will definitely be back.
Andrew Maltezos
I love coming here for post-work drinks with my friends. The staff are always friendly and attentive. Delish food and a wide array of drinks to choose from at an acceptable price point.
Joanne Council
Great atmosphere, great food and the friendliest staff 😊we ate, we drank and we danced and if something was ‘totally unacceptable’ it was straightened out 😂 (ask your security staff, who were fabulous)
Lisa McKay
My favourite hang out place. Always visit every time we are in melbourne. Great food also. Salt and pepper calmari is the best I have ever had ďż˝
Joanne Austin
Really enjoyed it!.We booked for dining for 12 and more people happened to come. The staff were very accomodating and made the relevant changes. Was very impressed. We ate, drank and danced. We will definitely be back

Nice place to go but the food portions are really small for chicken dishes and we ask for tobasco sauce and in return got an empty bottle..

Went to MP for new years eve and it was fantastic! You never waited to get a drink, the food going around was delicious, the band was brilliant, nice, large dance floor and the atmosphere was amazing! Would definitely come back and recommend to others!
Katherine Harris
Fantastic pub in Melbourne, great food at reasonable prices, great atmosphere. Highly recommended. If in Melbourne take the time to visit this pub!
Sharon Woodall
Great food, drink and atmosphere... awesome...and pleasant staff...great place to stop

Had a great night on Queens birthday eve with Jon Stevens, great food, sparkling wine and friendly efficient staff. Also got treated as VIPs with a separate area up the front to see Jon Stevens. Will definately go back.

Beautiful meal , setting , service , highly recommend

Great vibe, food, entertainment, security and staff. The Saturday night drummer is incredible too!
David Hutton
Top spot . The food ans service were great and as is was our wedding anniversary and we were going to a concert the staff could've been more helpful thanks
Tianie Grunwald
We had a great night. Walking past and heard Jason Singh was playing. Drop in for a drink and a look. Stayed and had lots of drinks and lots of dancing. Bar staff were fantastic, friendly and quick to serve the customers.
Nancy Larosa
Great venue, good vibe. Food was delicious. There was an unacceptable hold up with service of my food however staff quickly rectified the situation when notified and offered a complimentary drink for the inconvenience.
Neha Bhatia
Nice place. Really good atmosphere! Went for a friends bday. Had a few drinks and had some snacks. Had the spicy popcorn cauliflower, onions rings and shoestring fries. The spicy popcorn cauliflower was the best we have ever had!! Fries were pretty good as well. The onion rings were a little let down - wish they fried them a little more and made them crispier. Overall pretty good!

Quite an interesting place, although I obviously looked at the map wrong and didn't get the river views I hoped for (but that was my fault).  Risotto was lovely (who would have thought mint would work?), two diners had the pork belly and were happily crunching away on the crackling, and another had the parma and it was a decent size.  As we left, I noticed the outdoor area that I had missed on the way in, I would have loved to sit there near the fires and just chill.

A huge venue at South Wharf, Melbourne Public is a really good bar and restaurant, especially on the weekend when it can get really busy. It has a great atmosphere and a lovely modern fitout, and a great drinks list. Service is fairly prompt, even when it's busy, and staff have a great attitude.<br/><br/>I've been here many times when they have live music, and other times to watch sport on tv, or to catch up with friends. The live music provides a fun atmosphere and it's great to have a dance. I haven't eaten in the restaurant for a while, but it also seems to get busy. A fun venue, with a fun crowd; Melbourne Public is a cool place to hang out and chill.
Nay Nay
Great Vibes! Just walking past this place I had to try it. Again a good selection happy hour coctails. A generous G&T. I'd go back for a drink and a bite
Mr NomNom
$1 Oysters on Friday night!!<br/><br/>Pair it up with some drinks and sides. How can you not give it a 5. Also no one seems to want the restaurant side on a Friday night. So if you want some intimacy this may be the spot
Joshua Osborne
Very spacious pub. Nice setting and friendly bar staff. Went here to watch the footy and have a little nibble.<br/><br/>I got calamari which had an asian inspiration. It was served with a sweet soy sauce. Very tender and flavorful. Wife got the parma. Parma was ok, nothing special.<br/>

Went in for a light meal for dinner and ordered an eggplant dish. It was almost like a lasagne made of eggplant which comes with salad. Not quite the idea of a healthy meal but it was a great tasting vegetarian meal.<br/><br/>Happy hour is also great, ordered the $10 mini fish bowl gin and tonic with quite a bit of fruit in it. They ran out of one of the drinks that was also on Happy Hour but I was happy with my second choice.<br/><br/>Ordered and pay at the bar and they immediately made the drink for me. Service is great.

There was a time my family use to come here every Friday for the $1 oysters. Always busy but always welcoming service with great atmosphere. Not once did we complain about the portion sizes or the meals. All the drinks from the bar go great too.

Awsome venue! Live music, good food what more can you want. Have been here for birthdays and sporting events and even our work Xmas party. Great spacious venue and great place to catch up with friends.
Britt And Shane
Was near impossible to get table on a Friday night but after an hour we finally got one. The drinks were good but it’s always annoying waiting in long queues each time. The food wasn’t bad, definitely not amazing.
Russ
went there yesterday with 2 friends we all the chicken parma and chips I would have to say I was very let down by my parma it was very dry the chips were fine the service was amazing the music level  was  just right  do I see myself going back I'm not sure
Melbourne Epicurean Juror
Lunched here today with two of my closest friends one of which had strongly recommended that we all choose their Chicken Parma with chips & salad for $18.00 which was served steaming hot within 15 minutes of ordering. The Parma unfortunately was very average on this occasion & lacked moisture (unlike her previous visit only 2 weeks earlier), the chips & the additional bowl of wedges however were truly great. Service provision was also excellent. The background music was at a level that could be heard over easily.<br/><br/>The Juror's Verdict: Food 3/5, Service Provision 4/5, Will I return: doubtful<br/><br/>Phill Jury (food critic & writer)

Wheelchair accessible indoors and out. Accessible bathroom.<br/><br/>We went here for new years ever with 3 chairs. No bookings and had drinks all night.<br/><br/>Amazing!<br/><br/>EDIT<br/><br/>2 Years in a row<br/>Great service and great crowd

Just excellent! Food, service and beverages! What more can you ask for....melbourne public delivers it all! Best place for after shopping drinkies and if you want the cheeky after work drinks. Plus they cater for big time functions
Scomitchella
Staff were so lovely music was great and I really enjoyed the nutcracker!!! I would really recommend "MP" for anybody deciding on a Saturday night.
Daniel Norton
This is the place to be! As the summer heats ramps up what better way then to come here to enjoy the food and drinks (especially cocktails) :)
Kirsty Haggerty
I usually come to this place for drink but thought I’d try the food this time. The food was not bad, standard bar food but we only ordered the fried sharing plates and not the main meals. The arancini balls were tasty and my bloody mary cocktail was delicious.
Foodie Foodie
Amazing location, environment and music! But the food isn't the best in the World. A lil overpriced and food that you can simply cook yourself at home for just 1/4 the price. <br/><br/>
Angel Khong
Great for after work drinks with colleagues; good selections of drinks and bar-type food that are pretty tasty. Good spacious venue though it can still get pretty crowded after work hours. Coffee's quite good also.
Luke Martini
Went here for a couple of functions and I can think of worse places to go. Times I have been have been busy, but not over the top so able to get to the bar easily. Food that I have tried has also been good (sliders and chips). Worth a look if in the area and wanting bar food.
Facebook User
This is a great place to go for a drink and to socialise, however, it's not the best for food. We tried three menu items - the grilled chicken, the vegetable curry and the turkish bread share plate. All three left us wishing for something better. The Turkish bread and chicken were both burnt and overall the meals were just a bit flavourless, although well presented. <br/><br/>On the upside, the staff are lovely, as is the venue in general.

Came here for a colleague going away and the place itself is great. Ample seating throughout the complex. Perfect to chill with a beer and food. The calamari here is delightful, wedges were on point. But the sliders were my favourite, delicious and little bursts of heaven. The prosciutto pizza smelled a little funky in my opinion however.<br/><br/>All in all a great Friday night chill spot.
Michala Binari
I thought this place was disappointing. It is very expensive for what you get. Staff were arrogant, slow service. I would miss it if I were you. Not worth it,  Spend your money elsewhere

Melbourne Public was the next stop on our South Wharf cocktail happy hour crawl and they didn't disappoint with a unique drinking atmosphere. The outside decking area at the entrance was all decked out in "Mont Plonk" theme with pine trees, faux snow and open gas fires to give you the après ski feel. They had specialty drinks to fit this scene to with mulled wine, hot toddy , and alcoholic hot chocolate all for a reasonable $10. These drinks are only served outside as we unfortunately discovered after queuing in the main inside bar. Sitting outside in the cold near a fire with the smell of pine needles with a hot toddy and a mulled wine was a great way to step into the evening. <br/><br/>If you want the mont Plonk experience you better be quick as it finishes up mid July.<br/><br/>The inside was a very familiar scene. I have a vague recollection of this place from a previous night out but it's all a little hazy. Quite an impressive main bar and packed out with after work drinkers.
Totto
Popped in for a few on Friday evening and the atmosphere was primo, the theme on the exterior (Mont Plonk) gave a distinct Alps Ski Resort feel with the Rugs on Chairs, open fire and the drinks on offer for winter warmers, unfortunately I missed out on the Boozy Hot Chocolate as they weren't serving it when I arrived get had it on display and offer.<br/><br/>Could use a wider range of beers on tap as wanted to mix it up a little and they had too many similar varieties.
Pjq
The food here is great...restaurant quality but at reasonable prices.  Both the sharing menu and the mains offer something for everyone.  The atmosphere and service are also very good
Good Food Good Mood
Came to a work function here last night, as I have done many times but this time I found myself really enjoying the food. Maybe it was due to being Day 12 of diet therefore I wasn't mindlessly chasing waiters from one end of the space to the other as I generally would be and instead mindfully enjoyed my selections the pick of which is easily the the salt and pepper calamari with soy dipping sauce (on the menu under sharing). Simply phenom. In fact one of my new waiter friends who was thankfully passing by very regularly told me it was his pick of the entire menu. There was also house made dips and flatbread as well as mushroom arancini (again the 'to share' section) as well as some pork belly and chicken skewers. Great spot for a function as it's quite atmospheric with the dim lighting and the staff are very pleasant. It is well worth getting down there before mid July as they are currently running an awesome winter set up 'Montplonk' with beautiful toasty fires and cosy fluffy cushions and rugs. What a wonderful way to warm up a chilly Melbourne evening
A Black Sheep
I have to say, they have super friendly and helpful staffs to accommodate a large group of us (20 +a) in busy time. I was happy with the services. They have a decent size outdoor area for drinks before dinner. The food was not super impressive, but good enough. I wouldn't mind coming back if I was in the area. However, I don't think I would just come back for food.
Fran Marcovski
Im a firm believer in a work place having a high quality of team work, therefore making the entire staff comfortable and happy, which in turn makes the customers experience great. The food, drinks and atmosphere were great. However i was deeply troubled to view the way some of the supervisors were handling (Literally grabbing) and speaking to the bar workers/wait staff. In future i won't be returning as it clearly isn't a very nice place to work, and in no way do i wish to support the abuse of staff just trying to do their jobs.
Michael
Main meal  : pork ribs with asian slaw and onion rings.8 onion rings a hand full of cabbage ONE pork rib and one strip of pork belly.  poor form
Tessa Eleanor Kember
Absolutely gross! I wouldn't feed the veal schinitzel to my dog, if I had one! Plus charged me full price, despite the large lunch special board out side. Definitely will give this place a miss.
Caitlin Maree
Beautiful venue and style of the place! Not overly inviting from outside though. The meals have always been great and there's a wide variety of things to choose from! Great place for a meal and drinks with friends.
Andries Van Wyk
The food is quite good. <br/>But the music is way to loud - very uncomfortable, disruptive and unsocial!<br/>Other than that the service is good and its a nice place. Staff are very friendly ...
Linda
$1 natural oysters and$1.50 kilpatrick!! They have a great champagne and dozen oysters for $50 special, and $10 espresso martinis which have a good coffee to cocktail ratio! <br/>The service is good and the venue great!!
Dave
Great food. Good service if a little slow. Little bit miffed the whole table except me got free drinks because the service was slow. Overall though food was really good and decent value for money. Will be back (although may preorder or leave a little more time for the meal!)
Bianca Bothman
After waiting for over 45 mins for fish and chips the manager comes over and asks if we still waiting for food - duh the number is clearly still on the table! Do you see us eating?!! Very very disappointing service!
T
The oyster deal here 5-7pm ($1) an oyster is a MUST if you're an oyster fan!!! You do not get deals like this often. Not oysters to the standard of the South Melbourne market but still amazing money for the quality!! Nice bar too and easy location to get to! It is always packed here
EpiCurious
We just popped in here for a quick snack of wedges , but further investigation is warranted! The wedges were great - light but crispy batter and nicely seasoned.

One of my favourite bars in Melbourne! Located in the very popular South Wharf riverside precinct, MP is perfect for a weekend lunch/dinner, after-work drinks or a function!<br/><br/>The staff are very friendly when it comes to menu options and drink choices, and we were lucky enough to meet the owner who is a very down-to-earth and warm lady.<br/><br/>Enjoyed my 30th birthday celebrations at the Citizen Bar section of this place. Incredible. Staff, food and the fitout all just amazing. Big thank you to Alysha and the team for putting on such an amazing event for us at late notice under difficult circumstances. We'll become regulars no doubt!<br/><br/>Also went for dinner here: We had the Chicken Parma and Salmon Nicoise for mains. The salmon was well cooked and it's skin was crispy and beautifully salty, accompanied with an interesting but very tasty combo of potatoes, onion, cherry tomatoes and beans! The tomato ragu on the Parma was brilliant, and the portion was very generous. Chips a golden brown & crispy- you can't ask for more! Keep up the fantastic work guys!
Yolanda Wong
They have nice lunch salad there in display. The price is also good and staffs are very warm! Like the chicken salad best and it is one of my commonly visited lunch spot. Haven't got chance to try other things yet
John Parry
Solid meal made better by the helpful Staff. A big group of us when here for dinner. I went the safe option of the Parma and it was above average. What i did like was how the staff figured that i liked spicey food so they offered Tabasco and Fresh Chills on the side. I wouldn't make a special trip to this bar but if you were in the area it seems like a safe bet.

We've been a few times now. The food is great, I've had burgers, oysters, chips, and steaks and they've all been great quality and very tasty. The atmosphere is great, lots of tvs to watch sport, a live band, a nice outdoor area and a nice sit down restaurant section. Will be back.
Bopnbeep
A good spot for after work drinks. They have an oyster and champagne special for happy hour or just $1 oysters. Although I have noticed that the oysters have shrunk in size and they also ran out once before 6pm (happy hour until 7pm). Snacks and share plates are quite overpriced for what you get but it's to be expected in this area. Still a decent spot for drinks an a bite.
ReadySteadyEat
I've been here a few times. The first was two years ago for a Christmas work lunch and absolutely loved the place, so when I had my graduation lunch a few days ago I thought Melbourne Public would be wonderful to go to. Unfortunately it was pretty average. <br/>Food is expensive, and although the Thai beef salad was yummy, the rest of our meals weren't so much. I had ordered the 'super food salad' which was very bland, and looked a mess (see photo). Was disappointing as I had such high expectations for the place.

Loved the entrees! 👌🏻 amazing sausage rolls, they were brilliant. The staff are friendly and there is good vibes going on. In winter it would be better if the place could be more closed off, but perfect for summer ✌️

1$ OYSTER EVERY FRIDAY !!!! Best value! Place is in great location. Food is great and we love the idea about 1$ oysters! :) 100% recommendation !
FoodGal
I loooove this place. It's a pub, but it's so much better than a pub. It has a great vibe, amazing fit-out, and manages to remain unpretentious. Friendly service and plenty of staff. The food is fantastic! There is so much tastiness on the menu that it's almost impossible to make a decision. We had a big party, and everything was delicious - the beetroot and goats cheese arancini, meatballs, pork belly and gnocchi were the standout. This is my favourite pub in Melbourne at the moment.
S
Steak!. Best steak I've had in a while. Perfect medium rare eye fillet. <br/><br/>Calamari entree was also amazing
Good Food, Good Mood
Gorgeous environment and setting. Behind the bar are proper table settings for the restaurant diners. We sat on stools that were too high and hurt my back but that's all apart of the gastropub feel. The waiters were super friendly as well which made our experience more pleasant :) I would recommend everyone to come and pay a visit here. There are many more items on the menu, but the oysters were merely an entree for us. It's really not that hard to find as well! It's close to DFO South Wharf - near the Tigerlily / Smiggle entrance. I never realised how many restaurants had opened around the wharf. I love the development, I love the surroundings and creativity of the restaurants and I love that there are more things to try, especially The Sharing House, The Boatbuilder's Yard and Gasolina (which looks like the mechanics in Grease! It's full of pretty bikes and white tiles).
Fussy Eater
Very poor and rude service, don't seem to be interested in people who are not in groups !! Would not recommend for a drink or place to have a snack in the afternoon
RickT
Food was just plainly not good. Simples

Terrible food!and expensive. Horrible food. Beef cheek wasn't beef cheek. It was jellied, overcooked and disgusting! I paid $45 for an entree and main for a group Xmas party and this was a huge disappointment. Don't waste your time. Ew
Ellimac2014
Great service. Went there for the first time on friday night. Very crowded due to the xmas work party season in full swing. We had booked a table in the dining room so we were able to sit right down even though we were early. Service was prompt and friendly, although my menu didn't have the food page in it (looked like someone had nicked it). I have an intolerance to garlic so i have to check every time i eat out, even if there is no mention of garlic in the menu, it often is involved. I ordered the veal schnitzel and checked that the crumb wasn't garlic infused. The waitress wasn't sure but went and checked and said it was fine. When the meal arrived she advised me that the potato side had garlic and asked if she could get me something else as a side dish (i went with chips). Might not sound that great but believe me, lots of wait staff would not do this, so when a staff member does it impresses me. So big shout out to her - sorry i didn't get your name but big thumbs up!<br/><br/>Went out to the main bar to meet friends and enjoy the live band. All the Xmas parties seemed to be having a great time and the mood in the venue was a really positive one. I would go there again.
Peter
A semi set menu for a work function. Entree platter to share was tasty. My main salmon was good but the celeriac and potato mash tasted of potato and was only just warm. The disappointment was tha smashed pavlova. I didnt realise thatmerangue could be so hard definately nothing pavlova about it, also very stingy with fruit. You could turn on the cooling also guys. I woul hate to be there on a warm night.
M.obouhoff
Great!. My partner and I came here for dinner last night and loved it! Staff were attentive and pleasant, cocktails were divine, the food came out quickly and was delicious, only thing I can think of that was slightly negative was the noise levels but that's to be expected on a Friday night. We'll be back!
Mommyinmelbourne
Awesome Chicken Parmigiana!. Love the one dollar oyesters every friday. Pretty cool hang out to watch sports with a big group of mates spacious layout, cool bar area and awesome food. The seafood linguine and chicken parmigiana are absolutely breathtaking. The bartender was sweet enough to make a sangria of our choice, doing it the way we like it which added onto us having a great experience, outdoors are pretty nice too with the heating and since its covered you can still hangout there on a rainy day like myself who loves getting drunk on patios.
Chloe
Bar snacks. Calamari- absolutely amazing!! The best calamari I have ever eaten! It was so soft and tender and honestly lovely!<br/><br/>Sliders - disappointing! The meat was nice and the buns amazing but there was no thought put into it. One tiny piece of pickle and a tiny smear of sauce and not much else. Really boring and would not order it again. <br/><br/>Chicken tenders- wonderful and moist. The sauce was a little smokey- would probably prefer a chilli mayo but it was still amazing!
Jim
Good location wise . More negatives than positives here I'm afraid . Clueless staff who forget you've even ordered a drink and you have to go back to the bar to remind them . Definitely overpriced for cardboard tasting ordinary food . Good old fun food I think not . Not disappointed as such but will certainly be mindful in future of avoiding this place completely .. Mc Donald's could of made some thing more consistent than this place could ever hope for . Avoid if you actually enjoy your food and prefer good service over the 'acme' brand of service offered here .

Desserts are Amazing!. FINALLY a place in South Wharf for desserts!<br/><br/>The tasting plate is great value, the pavlova special is full of flavour, churos are light and fluffy and the chocolate pudding decadent. The flavours were really well balanced. Awesome.
Peter Lyons
Visited here with family (5 adults, 2 small children) on 1/10. Customer service was superb - absolutely lovely. Food was one of the best pub meals we've ever had. Highly recommend.
Matt
Don't waste your time! My friends $28 meal wasn't cooked properly and smelt terrible. When he told the staff this, the manager returned 2 minutes later to argue that nothing was wrong with his meal, then refused to get him another meal or a refund! The manager was rude and very unprofessional! I will never waste another cent at this place!
PLATO
I attended MP last Saturday night with a big group of friends, on first walking in I thought the restaurant / pub was magnificent. Drinks were pricey, but that's to be expected nowadays in Melbourne. We ordered our entrees & meals, so far so good. An hour later, our entrees arrived, fair enough, the place was starting to fill up. A few drinks and good conversation later, another hour had passed with no mains. When MY main arrived ( 400gm RIBEYE) $40, it was the only thing on the plate.... No rosemary roasted potatoes as the menu stated. Like I wrote in the email to MP the next day, I don't mind paying good money for good food, but when what is stated on the menu does not make it to your plate???? Also, there is NO WAY the steak was 400gm, i would say 200-250 max. I am still awaiting a reply to my email, 5 days later, I even left my name & mobile number. Still waiting.... I guess my comment about good customer feedback does not mean much to MP. I have given ample time to be contacted, hence this review. i would have appreciated SOME form of contact to correct the problem. The girls who were waiting on us were exceptional, friendly and more than competent in their jobs.... Shame the same cannot be said about the Chef & kitchen staff, or the management of the establishment. BUYER BEWARE.

Dissapointed by restaurant. A few friends and I went to MP for my 40th to enjoy a steak, watch the game and then enjoy a few drinks. Firstly, its a fantastic venue and on paper suited my needs. But, it was over 30 degrees inside and even hotter in the restuarant. As soon as we sat for dinner the service was terrible, we had serveral different wait staff which is always confusing, mixed up drink orders, no abilty to know when to take an order or clear a table etc or even how to conduct a waiters basic duties from start to finish. It was the worse service I've ever received! The girls were young and friendly but frankly they had no idea about service or the food being served. The most dissapointing thing was watching staff member after staff member walking past our table while we waited for it to be cleared and then for the bill. Even the maitre d' ignored the situation many times while looking at our table as she passed by. To sum it up they gave me the wrong meal then exchanged it but did not apologise. As mentioned the venue is terrific and the bar staff are good, just don't bother eating there. Over priced food and terrible service which ruined the dining experience I set out for.
Gwenda
Had a lovely time for lunch today with great food and ambiance. Was most inclined to write this review thanks to the lovely lady that took our food order at the bar and couldn't have been more accommodating in regards to my pregnancy food requests. Thank you!

It's Hospitality, not Hospitable!. A group of interstate friends booked a table for some food/drinks and to watch the Wallabies/Lions match. Only to find the TV in their area had the AFL telecast on (Cats v Freo). Many requests were made by all patrons in the area for the game to be changed over, but the owner steadfastly refused to flick a switch. The bar manager could only apologise, as most people had to move tables. <br/><br/>The arrogance was almost humorous! Listen to your customers!<br/>We won't be back!

Great little bar. Loved the shrimp po'boy

Great service, great food and a mixed crowd.. Staff need to check if their guests have finished their drinks though as I had to stop staff on two occasions from running away with my glass. I suspect it is due to the lighting. Thanks to Yarra Trams for their track works as I would have never known about Melbourne public cafe. My bill was also not right, but restaurant karma prompted me to have the staff fix it. Will be back.
Meg
Really disapointing. Beautiful fit-out, but it ends there. Staff very indifferent and lack basic knowledge on menu items etc. Food very average at best and overpriced. Don't go here -probably recieve better food and service inside DFO foodcourt!
The Pup
Cant recommend.. Popped in today for a bite to eat nice enough building and surrounds. Shame about the food. Polenta chips are not chips but microwaved slop, avoid as inedible and much like omelette found as part of an aircraft meal. Chicken Parma well this is painful writing this review...Chicken was of poor quality and cold topping very unexciting and much like what would been found in a lunchtime bain-marie, chips served with the parma were not at all crisp and again cold. Found the security marching around in a pretty quiet place also somewhat weird.
Sarah Marantelli
Ok i guess. Three of us popped in Sunday afternoon for a late lunch and drinks. Think we must have ordered off a limited lunch or bar snack menu. 2 chicken burgers and 1 parma. Parma was nice, served with a side of chips and home made coleslaw. The Chicken breast on the burgers was coated in some sort of curry paste, but that wasnt noted on the menu. Meals were about $21 each, which is a bit steep for a burger. Was also a bit hard to get a seat outside. I think there is adequate room for more tables and stools, which in my opinion, would help create a bit of atmosphere outdoors. Seemed a little dull considering it was such nice weather.
Megan Johns
Although you are paying a little more for location and i guess a 'trendy' vibe.. it is still worth it. I highly recommend a sunday arvo visit. the great food and amazing music can turn any drab day upside down
Feed Me Now
Just what Melbourne needs-another ho-hum restaurant/bar. Service not exactly friendly, food average, no vibe. Meals took over 30 minutes to come out. Nachos were burnt & were meant to be served with guacamole but came with avocado pieces. Not the same thing. Chicken salad was ok. Wouldn't come back.
Rowdy
Ventured to this place after hearing some varied reports and will not come back. The price of the place is absolutely ridiculous a pot of beer 4.50 and the lines don't seem as though they've been cleaned for a long while. Then I try a peroni on tap , so I loose 45ml but they charge $8,50. Sorry guys don't mind paying an extra couple of bucks but $4 is just taking advantage and it's not a great drop either. I ordered some food too , just a pass quick and nasty is what I'd say. Bring your cash people cos this place wants all of it.

The food is always outstanding, ambience is friendly bustling and cool. The staff are outstanding, always friendly, quick to engage with a conversation and they let me sit and watch fox footy on the big screens no probs. gf friendly too. Perfect pub.
I Like Good Food...
Headed down Saturday night for a Parma...didn't disappoint!! Chips came in a mini deep fry cage (very cool), salad was coleslaw (nice change) and Parma was tasty. Not overly big but enough to fill you up, the chicken was nice, sauce was tasty...maybe a little too much cheese but overall pretty good. Throw in friendly staff and footy on the big screens, great venue!<br/>No hesitations in heading back!!

Non-existent service.. A simple review - walked in, sat down, after 20 minutes of the wait staff repeatedly staring at us and not serving, we left.

Worst parma ever.. I went here on a Saturday night because nowhere else had bookings and now I know why. I ordered a parma and my partner ordered the Lamb shanks. You know things are bad when the waiter puts down the plate and tells you "careful, the plate is hot." My parma was reheated, the chicken was hard and the crumb was soggy and flavorless. the cheese was hard and obviously not fresh like it had been pre-prepaired and re heated. The parma also came out on the chips, massive no no. The lamb shanks were undercooked and covered in a thick bland sauce that had a strong odour that put me (more) off my parma. Overall it was an overpriced and extremely disappointing experience. We will definitely not be returning.

James Reyne Gig. The neon lights and wooden furniture are well suited to the venue. The venue is rather large and with the option to sit and eat outside, you can't go wrong. The food was not the greatest, but definitely well priced and a suitable portion was served. <br/><br/>Went because we went to see James Reyne - Jason Singh wasn't too bad either. Will go again (possibly for the Mark Seymour gig). The two friends I went with returned the week after for a family dinner, just stay away from the Parma I've been told.

Overpriced, tasteless and cold food. Indifferent service

Mussels and steak were very good. I can see this restaurant has mixed reviews, but for the dinner we had there, it was absolutely fantastic!<br/><br/>I had the mussels for entrĂŠe and they were absolutely divine. The best mussels I've had in Melbourne (I've had better in NZ though). My husband had a steak for his main and he praised the steak till this day. He usually has medium-well-done steaks and it's very difficult to get steaks to be only slightly pink on the centre whilst remaining juicy and tender. Melbourne Public cafĂŠ did it, quite deserving of praise. <br/><br/>The other dishes were quite good but they weren't as memorable as these two. Overall, I'd go back to Melbourne Public again, just for the mussels and the steak.

Two words: mini burgers. That is all.

Hello, ladies?. I work in the area, and often call into Melbourne Public for drinks.<br/><br/>On Friday nights, you can't move for the men flocking to this bar. I wouldn't go by myself. but with a group of workmates, I don't feel so intimidated. Try their cocktails. Delicious and strong!<br/><br/>If you are in the market for a volume endowed suit, pop in and stand at the bar. You won't be alone long.

Great duck, OK linguine. Food is great and priced reasonably. Had a HOT Saturday lunch for four with a Deals.com.au coupon and we had: <br/>- Pumpkin and fetta arancini (suprisingly AWESOME, delicate flavor and light)<br/>- Housemade chicken dumplings (nice and lean)<br/>- Steamed shellfish (plenty of shellfish in a refreshing sauce)<br/>- amaretto and pumpkin filled agnolotti (just gorgeous)<br/>- Linguine (good amount of seafood, but nothing special-on par with linguine from other similarly-priced cafes/restaurants BUT the linguine was served in tomato-based broth, which was not how it's described on the menu)<br/>- Baked atlantic salmon fillet (Nicely crisped skin and refreshing)<br/>- Roasted duck breast (this is apparently incredibly delicious, my duck-loving friend will come back for this!)<br/>- chargrilled pork cutlet (quite good, I believe).<br/>- Sweet treats plate was very good, chocolate brownie was a hit and the rest were similarly demolished.<br/><br/>Service was attentive, our waiter come to check on us 5 minutes after each dish is delivered, the latte was good and perfect with dessert.<br/><br/>My friend will come back for the duck, but unfortunately I'm on a 'great linguine' journey so I have to move on until I find one. One thing to note, which I think this place does well, most of the meat served here is quite lean, which is great for those who aren't a fan of fat and greasy food.<br/><br/>Very nice location for a relaxing lunch and you can visit the DFO afterwards.

Clenden
Clenden. Bar really nice, spacious - good vibe, staff are friendly. Food was nice, limited bar menu, nothing in the way of real nibbles to snack on while having a drink though.- Definately go back for a drink

Standard upmarket pub fare, food looks good but can only rate the pork belly, calamari and chips as average. Dumplings taste like the meat is good quality, and very lean, unfortunately misses the mark on flavour. The slider burgers on the other hand are OUTSTANDING!! Worth coming here just for a slider burger, and staff are generally quite friendly in addition to being a nice pub

A Very Enjoyable Experience. Enjoyed a lovely dinner with the family in the dining area of the Melbourne Public. Entrees of Chicken Dumplings & Salt Pepper Calamari were flavorsum and plentiful. Mains of Rib Eye & Singapore Noodles were delicious. The dessert tasting plate was a wonderful idea where we were able to enjoy Panna Cotta, Choc Brownie, Vanilla Ice Cream w/ Biscitoni & Sticky Date. Panna Cotta was voted the family favorite. Although they dont have a kids menu, our lovely waitress organized for the seafood linguine to have extra Napoli sauce which the kids shared and enjoyed.

Wasn't Impressed. Ate the bar the other night with a work friend to check out the new venue. <br/>The pub was empty and still our food took sooo long to come out. Then when it did I was not impressed at all.<br/>The food was not worth the price we will not be going back.

Poor food, poor value. $28 for some of the worst fish and chips ever. 3 tiny (really tiny) fingers of fish, and packet french fries. Really poor quality and value. Stand alone bowl of chips was better, with beer battered hand cut (possibly) chips, but still quite pricey. Also, smokers sit at the window (on the outside), so smoke drifts in while you eat. Even the DJ kept getting up and smoking right near the window, then coming back to change a track.

Deserves Recognition. Went here on a living Social voucher between Xmas and New Year, probably not expecting much. All I can say is WOW!<br/>Liked the setup and look of what is essentially a pub, in what will be a terrific new precinct when all is finished, Being so cavermous it could be pretty noisy but this wasn't a concern for us on this night. The separation of the eating area from the bar area made it more intimate than in the main room which was fine for the two of us.<br/>However it wasnt the design of the place that impressed the most -he food and the srvice were the stars.<br/>The menu is compact but the food was exceptional. My wife's Chicken Dumplings were packed with meat and flavour generously served (6 for an entree plate), were matched by the subtle flavours of my arancini. Mains of rib eye and a tuna steak also impressed with their perfect preparation and the tasting plate of four divine desserts were equally divine. Service was very friendly and unobtrusive and the wine recmmendation of our aiter was a great accompaniment to our meal. <br/>Graet work Melbourne Public - may you get the recognition you deserve.

Good. But . . .. Good food. Ok Atmosphere. Security. Questionable.

Build and they will come. It's great to get a new bar in the Docklands, and the residents of Yarra's Edge suddenly have two. The Melbourne Public and the Boatbuilder's Yard (Polly Woodside). The Melbourne Public has a professional design and vibe. The staff are very well trained. Initial thoughts. Food, tasted a few of the bar snacks, and they were ok. Volume. Don't go if you want a conversation. Smoke. The smoke can come into the non smoking area when the windows are open from the outside area. I'll go back as it's great to have a new place, but the prices in the Boatbuilder's seem cheaper.
Burger Friday
The burger however was not the star of the show. Presented in the deep fryer from which they were cooked, the chips were crispy and slightly seasoned. It’s not often after a Burger Friday that the majority of conversation post meal is devoted to the sidekick to the main course. Like Watson is to Holmes, Clarke was to Ponting and Ricky is to Seal, the quality of the accompaniments although complimentary can sometimes also take over as the star.

I think it'd be a great place to down some beers and watch a footy game with mates. And we might try the dining room to see what the kitchen is really capable of too.

South Wharf is an area I don’t get to often, Yet tucked away behind the Exhibition Center a surprising array of cafes, restaurants and pubs have popped up – one of which is Melbourne Public. The pub looks fantastic. Light filled, spacious and fantastically decked out – its a shame there is another building in front of the massive glass windows, otherwise they would have a fantastic view of the bay … SO close. We arrived at Melbourne Public at the height of the January 2014 heat wave. Pure relief washed over me as I opened the door and felt the cool breeze of aircon hit me. We made our way to the bar and ordered

Melbourne Public has been blogged about by three others. It just opened last year when the rest of the promenade was opened. Since the promenade opened there has been a few mixed results. Sometimes it wasn't that busy. The place in itself wasn't that hard to find, follow the signs and you'll be right. You can even walk there from Southern Cross. And yes I was invited to one of their parties. But to be fair I decided to do two visits. The first one being the AFL party 1) The AFL Party It was on the 28th of March at 5pm. A lot of people turned up for the good times. At that time all the trains were running really really late. The DJ there was good. All the food was free but the drinks cost me $3.50. There were sausage rolls, mini burgers and wedges. I loved loved loved the wedges (normally $10 for a bowl). They were well seasoned and not too overcooked. I would have loved to see some more chill sauce in it. I didn't get to try the sausage rolls but they sure looked nice. I got to try the

The vast expanse of partitioned space gravitates towards a central bar that illuminates with drinking lure. The cuisine by Justin Dingle-Garciyya is one of multi-ethnicity from his various ventures, making a stamp on his own rendition of pub food, with a great list of drinks to match.

...a pub and restaurant from the Darcy Group which also runs Motel and Precinct Hotel. A raised seating area behind the bar of a bustling pub is perhaps not the most obvious setting for a restaurant delivering modern European cuisine, but that’s what is happening at Melbourne Public. Chef Justin Dingle-Garciyya brings some serious credentials to his cooking having trained at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir in the UK and most recently the swanky Aman resorts in Sri Lanka and India. <br/><br/>
