to give anywhere a 1 star rating means the reviewer thinks the place should shut down. Those people should stick to the overpriced rubbish on Lygon Street and leave this place for those that love beautiful food cooked with love. This place is a gem and yes I didn't get a spoon with my spaghetti. It didn't take long to get and the ragu sauce was beautiful.
Beautiful and cosy spot! Best Potato pizza I have eaten in Melbourne and the sauce on the muscles was heavenly. A restaurant that serves wine in a tumbler glass feels like real Italian to me!
just stumbled across this place looking for my morning coffee this morning, the chef was making gnocchi as I waited for my t/a coffee, pared back simple set up with zero attitude, went back for lunch and it was the best food I've eaten in a long time, very reasonably priced and just a pleasure to be there :)
Great pasta and pizza. One of the best Italian restaurants in melbourne. Great authentic food without the price of fine dining
Awesome pizza, cold beer, great wine recommendation. Super friendly service, staff were patient with our kids and nothing was too much trouble.
Amazing, Living in Carlton I've been here 5 times in the last 2 months. There is some tough competition around this area (DOC especially), but Kaprica shines through with its own infectious vibe. The atmosphere is unbeatable. Ingredients are great which is fundamental for a pizza place, the menu is hand-written & photocopied. But what gets me is that the vibe is absolutely true to that of italian trattorias. That vibe is a very hard thing to curate, but they've nailed the service staff like no-one else has.
Oh and in the summer months, it over looks the Lincoln square. Much better than busy Lygon.
Awesome awesome awesome.
Great food, fantastic and friendly staff.
Fantastic staff and good food !

Grabbed Mr. John Pizza ($16). Mr. John was absolutely delicious with its dough baked perfectly - crunchy outside, chewy inside. Fresh ingredients on top including juicy tomatoes and cheese! Unexpected chilli kick from salami took the flavor to the next level. Worth a visit!
Super delicious gnocchi! We can on a weekday and the vibes were amazing.
Don’t eat pizza and not much on offer that’s gluten free but knew that before I went with a group . However the vegetable plate , prawns, salad and risotto were delicious. Everyone else enjoyed the pizzas so definitely will go back!
The gnocchi is incredible 👌🏼 so was the handsome man who I met at a toilet door who took me there
the leek pizza was really good! very special flavour ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ definitely will come back again for the VERY FRESH pizza bread even though i’m not a fan of pizza
A fun place to have a casual meal after the movies, Staff were pleasant, quite a good range of wines and atmosphere of a converted factory building. Just off the tram route by Lincoln Square. Worth a visit.
Went to Kaprica for lunch with a group of friends earlier this month.
We ordered 4 pizzas. The mushroom one was my favourite but all very tasty.
Ordered the 8” Mario and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Super tasty, loved the saltiness the pancetta provided with each bite and fresh cut chillis pack a nice bit of heat. Pizza crust is a must to finish here, the dough is just so good! Crust remained crispy till the end and pizza dough was light, didn’t feel too floury. Enjoyed every mouthful.
Love love love the putanesca pizza....great flavours, ingredients and just the right amount of sauce on a thin, delicious base!
This place needs no introduction to Melbournians. There is always a que outside Kaprica and we all know why. They are known for the amazing pizza and pasta freshly made in house. No frills, a simple handwritten menu, rustic décor. We absolutely loved the pizza and pasta here. The pastas are cooked to perfection and the pizza base is really good. Definitely worth the visit when you’re in Carlton and you will understand why people que and wait for a table.
I’ve been to Kaprica many times and have never been disappointed.
The atmosphere is rustic, warm, cosy.
Everything is handmade in store – bread, pizza dough, pastas, gnocchi.
I love that they give you a basket of bread to start with.
The pizzas are thin, traditional, wood-fired and have a variety of delicious toppings in great combinations.
In the same way, I like the different flavours they come up with in the pasta dishes.
The gnocchi is really good with a soft texture and a slight bounce.
The garlic prawns were exceptional - cooked perfectly, they were still plump and had a nice bite. The sauce was really tasty and reminded me of Europe - olive oil, chilli, garlic, parley. Excellent when you dip bread into it.
Cute and quaint, Kaprica is tucked away from Lygon but it deserves the spotlight. It feels very comforting and authentic, the staff are great and the menu is simple but fulfilling.
Def a neighbourhood favourite of mine. Their pizzas are amazing and mussels are too! Prosciutto is my favourite pizza flavour there. Do check them out!
Been coming here for years. I like to order their pizza or pasta. Very old school. Make sure you have a booking just in case. Could get very busy.
Really enjoyed. Tucked away off lygon, not crowded but a cosy hubbub. Good ambience, service, fresh toppings and dough; charming rustic woodfire pizza place done right
Tried the pasta and anchovy pizza. They make the pizza from scratch so that’s why it took a bit longer. The staff was okay. The pizza and pasta tasted delicious. And i love the ambience at this restaurant
Kaprica is definitely one of my go-to spots to satisfy my pizza and pasta cravings in Melbourne. Their prosciutto and smoked salmon pizzas are my faves from them! As for pasta, their vongole and gnocchi are spot on.
I booked a table for 4 at 7.30 pm on a Tuesday night. It was very busy despite it being a Tuesday, so I would recommend to book in advance if you don’t want to wait.
It seemed that my booking may have not been written down when I called the day before. However, they were very accommodating and were able to organise a table almost instantly.
We ordered two pizzas and two pastas.
They were all very delicious and well made.
The pizzas that we ordered were the margherita and prosciutto. The base was thin and soft whilst the flavours and the cheese were cooked to perfection.
For the pasta we ordered the veal pork ragu spaghetti and pomodoro, ricotta basil spaghetti. The spaghetti was both cooked al dente. They were both very tasty but I loved the buffalo mozzarella basil.
Such an intimate space. I enjoy the pizza here more than the pasta. My favorite pizza here? “Mr. John” pesto pizza w hot salami. The crust is super crunchy while toppings are the perfect amount of moist. A must go if you’re in the area and craving good Italian. Better than DOC.
Downside - service was a bit slow to get the tables cleared for us to sit outside and to take our order. Also they didn’t have table cloths for us but the previous diners had cloths :/ so we felt a bit neglected in that sense.
Food came out super quick though, within 5-10 minutes so made up for the slow service at the start
Came here on a Saturday night and it was almost fully booked. Ordered a rose to start with, it was really refreshing on a summer night.
For food we ordered garlic prawn (always ordered this and always loved it), gnocchi, mushroom pizza, crab risotto and a side of salad. The mushroom pizza was so good, cheesy, just beautiful! My friend's gnocchi seems good too. My only complain is the risotto was really hard seemed a bit under cooked. Had a tiramisu after and it was lovely. Will be back!
Love their handwritten menu!
Gnocchi is my absolute favourite.
Other top favourite include pizza with potato, rosemary and caramelised onions.
Quite vegetarian friendly. Not vegan friendly.
It is definitely on the expensive end. Its better to share it as a group than go alone and eat so lavishly.
Nevertheless, amazing food,service and ambiance!
Best pizza and gnocchi I’ve ever had! Super friendly staff. Highly recommend the potato pizza (or the mushroom pizza...or the salmon pizza...basically all the pizzas) and obviously the gnocchi :) this place gets filled up super quick during lunch hours so best to make a booking
Great pizzas, great pasta. I've been here several times and I dare say I would pick this place over DOC. It's quite an intimate venue, so best to book prior!
Kaprika, you never fail to disappoint. I love this place so much that sometimes go here twice a week and it's not my local. The gnocchi and spaghetti ragu are the standouts. The venue is small so definitely book in advance
Look at the dishes we finished then you know how good Katrina present. Prawn and mussel are fresh and well cooked. Perfectly matched with homemade loaf. Pizza was freshly made and then served within 20 seconds. Would like to have more dishes and if menu can be changed seasonally that will be even better
Great Pizza and great drinks. Margarita pizza was the best, this place is unique in its decor and provide a very friendly atmosphere to go with friends and closed ones.Broccoli pizza was unique and one can give it shot, overall a good place
Found ourselves at this cozy restaurant just off Swanston on a Saturday night. We ordered the gnocchi, crab risotto and pizza and loved how fresh the ingredients tasted. The pizza was perfection with its woodfired thin base and the gnocchi were soft little pillows of carby goodness. We will definitely be back! 4.5 stars
Nice and cosy place to eat pasta and pizza. I really enjoy the experience every time I go. It can get quite busy so I definitely recommend getting a reservation. Some pizzas are not really amazing but some of them are excellent! So you have to try them all at some point.
Excellent food. The menu was not too large but offered a great selection of starters, pizzas and pasta. Nice selection of wines. A very warm atmosphere
Lovely soft and fluffy gnocchi with beautiful buffalo mozzarella and a rich tomato sauce. I always order the gnocchi because it's soooo good! I like how we are given a bowl of delicious bread and olive oil while we wait for our food. It's very cozy and warm in here. I would give 4.5 if it was an option. Taking off .5 because sometimes it is a little too crammed and gets a bit pushy and you feel a bit squeezed in.
Loved the food. Had the pizza and pasta and definitely good quality and delicious. The restaurant has a nice warm and intimate ambience. Customer service however is a let down. The kitchen is definitely a lot more attentive towards the customers. The waitress clearly looked like she didn’t wanted to be there, walked to us with annoyance and only to make another person take our order? We found that quite funny. Other than that, definitely will come back for the food and hopefully to see staff who enjoys their job.
I always get the ragyu pasta here. It's amazangggggg. Also thank you for the extra bowl of parmesan. Anyway... the puttanesca pizza was good. The gnocchi was average. The service is great. The place is cosy.
Dinner at Kaprica is always a pleasure. Cosy small hidden gem in Carlton. Service is friendly and efficient. Pastas options are limited on the menu but everything on it deserves a try. Delicious.
With this place, sometimes we’re lucky to get a table sometimes we don’t. The place itself is narrow, long, dim and rather intimate. The service is fast, friendly and efficient. The extensive handwriting menu for both the food and the drink... so romantic..
But we’re not here for any of those..
Kaprica makes a great pizza but above all they make a very mean pasta. These guys defines the word Al Dente right to the point.
This is probably one of the most expensive pasta dish I have ever had, but I think it’s worth it because the portion size is quite large.
To Try: Ragu Pasta and Pomodoro Pasta, and if you have room, try the prawn and chilli entry
Update: they changed the meat of the ragu from chuck meat to mince meat.. disappointing...
No signage so we walked past the restaurant a couple of times before deciding this must be the place. We were shown to a table at the back of the old brick building. Water and menus were promptly delivered. We chose proseco and a Campari and grapefruit juice while we decided what to eat. The small plates sounded yum but we wanted to get to the museum so just selected a main each. I picked the crab and spring onion risotto which was not soupy and had a lovely light flavour. My aunt selected spaghetti with clams and chilli. The spaghetti kept falling off her fork-perhaps too much oil? The dish was enjoyed nonetheless. Gorgeous big loaves of bread st the front of house enticed us on our way out az did the look of other patrons pizzas. Next time. Great little venue and delicious well priced meals. Extensive wine list.
One of the best pizza places in Melbourne. Rustic, authentic Italiano style with quality ingredients used and reasonable prices. The spicy salami pizza is my favourite and i keep coming back.
The food is real and very authentic. Menu was simple but wide enough to provide sufficient choice. We had the pizza. It genuinely rivals most of the top, well-known pizzerias in Melbourne. This place is a hidden gem and much better than a lot of the nearby Lygon St options.
Best Italian in Melbourne! Such a cute, hidden away restaurant with a very authentic and rustic feel. Menu is simple, but enough choice - pizza, pasta and risotto. Antipasti was delicious - great olives and caprese salad. We shared the mushroom pizza and the broccoli pizza. Both were amazing - great base and full of flavour. This place is a hidden gem - much better than what you’ll find on nearby Lygon St!
This place was amazing. Food and service was amazing. It’s definitely a must visit restaurant. The atmosphere was so very chill and romantic.

This pizza place is a hidden gem! We have been here many times and love it!
We ordered the salmon and Mr John, they still tasted amazing as usual!
The bread that came with the veggies was yum too.
Recommend !
Came here on a windy afternoon in Melbourne for a little gathering with close friends. The place is tucked away on a street that is not busy and no other restaurants around. Pretty small place but inside is different. Lit with warm lights and the kitchen is on full display, therefore you could see all the ingredients and the chef inaction.
Potato pizza small $16: perfect crust, one of the most simplest but best pizzas I’ve tasted in a long time. The crust is thin but can hold all the toppings and had a delicious texture to it. Potatoes were thinly sliced, the amount of cheese wasn’t too much that all the topping were drowned it. The touch of rosemary blew my mind and onion was caramelised so well it tasted like candy. This pizza can defiantly fill one person up since it is a pretty heavy pizza.
Gnocchi buffalo and mozzarella sauce $22: We were hesitant at first in ordering this dish since we did have a bad experience tasting gnocchi. But this one completely changed our minds. Light, airy and fluffy, the tomato used in the sauce tasted so fresh. High quality mozzarella and herbs garnished on top was the cherry on the cake.
Mixed leaves $12: You could say, how could a place of mixed leaves be any good? This place has a mix of Radicchio, endive and some lettuce dressed with pure olive oil and high quality balsamic vinegar. Radicchio has a refreshing crisp with a bitter flavour while the endive was sweet and refreshing. A great salad to have a break between the pasta and the pizza.
Service: we had two servers serving us. One was kind and professional but the other one seems like she wasn’t happy or unenthusiastic.
Total: $50 for three
A friendly welcome on entry
The smells of fresh foods as we entered
Dynamic array of fresh coffee and cakes
I had a creamy risotto
3 others ate pizzas
All was eaten
Tasty
Fresh
Inviting

Well worth the visit
Very rustic
We will have to be going back
Positive foods shn bhd loves kaprica
The pizza flavours are delightful, however, not a fan of their pizza base. Not the usual wood fired pizzas here and it's a bit weird how they slice it up into quarters instead of eighths. The gnocchi is super delicious and so is all their other pastas. Really good location
Recommended by a friend who claimed that the pizzas here are awesome. Against that was my view that most pizza is overrated. Bottom line: my friend is right and I’m wrong (again). The pizzas here are incredible. Easily the best I’ve tasted in Melbourne. We had two. The one with prosciutto, rocket and cheese and the one with hot salami and tomato. There were likely other toppings on these as well but I was more concentrating on what my friend was saying than studying the minutiae of each pizza composition. The depth of flavour was exceptional on both pizzas. The pizza bases were perfectly cooked too. The staff were good here as well. The space itself is charmingly underwhelming. It has a somewhat unfinished and/or distressed look which curiously succeeds against all odds. But, the food is the prime focus here. This is pizza well worth travelling for.
Back for the second time!
Ordered:
Mushroom Deluxe (v): Asiago, Swissbrown, Enoki, Oyster Mushroom ($16)
Potato (v): Mozzarella, Potato, Rosemary ($16).
Review:
The mushroom pizza was still amazing as I remembered. If you love mushroom as much as I do, this pizza will leave an unforgettable taste in your mouth.
Although they provide forks and knives in attempt of civility, the pizza base is much too thin to cleanly slice through.
Honestly? Just grab it with your hands and let your mind worry about how you can get more.
As much as I'm raving and ranting about the pizza, it is quite full on with the flavours. So, I'm thankful I got the potato (holding the caramalized onion) pizza because that was a nice break from the intensity of the mushroom.
So my recommendation would be to definitely get another pizza, split it with your mate so you can get the best of both worlds.
Our favourite Italian restaurant. Casual setting with a cozy feel. A simple one-page menu helped us make the decision faster. Overall, the food was terrific but the agreeable best dish was the Salmone Pizza.
Beautiful, rustic, simple Italian food served in a concrete and wooden ornaced garage. Staff are great. Low level drama but serious sensation assault. Very ‘Italy’ decor, simple pleasures. Great coffee, and cute location. Love this place.
Our food arrived in no time! Fridenly service and nice ambience. I especially like my garlic chilli prawn, tasted really good when I dipped soome pizza dough with it.😍 Overall a great place to hang out with people.
Simple and honest good Italian food. This place was full to the brim today with a bustling cosy atmosphere. Luckily we had a booking. Between the 3 of us we had the broccoli pizza, Mr John pizza and the pumpkin risotto. Most things are served with cheese so if you don't want cheese you need to ask them to hold it. The service was attentive, even though they were so busy. Would definitely go back to try the homemade pasta. Simple menu, not too many choices but quality for sure!!
Authentic, fresh food in a cosy restaurant looking onto the park. We shared a Caprese salad and Prosciutto pizza which was just right for two. Can’t wait to try the hand made pasta next time!
Sitting off Lygon Street, in what looks like your Nonnas house turned restaurant.
Kaprica is serving beautiful pizzas, pasta and nice amount of starters.
Menu is hand written and adds so much more character, they don’t have the 25 page food menu like some other places in the area which I think is great and you can tell in quality of taste and produce used.
House made spaghetti with diamond clams was absolutely delicious and will definitely return to have this again, my partner had a pizza which he couldn’t fault.
Be sure to have cash as they don’t have eftpos.
You know when you’re midway through your meal and you decide that this is now your pizza place you have found a good pizza.
The service was quick, not pretentious, friendly and helpful. I was torn between the mushroom and broccoli pizzas and when I asked the waitress she not explained how she enjoyed both but what aspects of each she liked to help me make my choice, depending on what I was in the mood for.
I settled on the broccoli pizza and was not at all disappointed. Cheesy but also not heavy, a good hit of chilli and really delicious broccoli, more than just the sad old boiled broccoli bits you are forced to eat when you were a kid!!
The Mr John pizza was also great. A good amount of toppings and again a nice chilli kick from the salami.
Definitely will be coming back here again and the sooner the better I would say.
The food at this place is un-bloody-believable, every dish. Have been here numerous times and had many of them. The FOOD cannot be faulted. It is EXCEPTIONAL. Unfortunately what lets it down - and the reason I don't rate this place a 5 - is the exceptionally rude owner. The last time we visited he absolutely ripped through one of his staff because the telephone wasn't working... as if that was her fault. Poor girl ended up in tears. Bless her socks, she walked out not long after with her handbag over her arm... not that I blamed her in the least. This is not the first time either, as one of my dining guests pointed out he had performed in the same way to another staff member a few weeks earlier when she had been there. He is not even pleasant to patrons. It explains the high turnover of staff, and why every time you go you never see a familiar face. Still, with food this good it's hard to take a stance in favour of the downtrodden staff. I'll no doubt be back.
Excellent and authentic food and unpretentious service+feeling. A recommended hidden gem for pizza in Carlton. A good focus on the food and not trying too hard on other aspects unlike others in Carlton.
Hello yes it is I, the ‘Frenchiest Fry’. But already I have confused you, as this is post about an Italian eatery. So your probably wondering ‘Hey Kren, what was that statement about?’. Well to be frank, it’s more or less a cunning ploy to convince you not to go to Kaprica based upon reading a crazy man’s blog post…You’re still convinced on going? OK OK, I’ll give you the lowdown.
I wish I could give this place a 6.
Aperol Spritz - Fantastic
Spaghetti Vongole (clams) - Just like Italy and the pasta was perfectly al dente.
Cozze in Sugo - so rich and delicious and served with plenty of bread.
Kaprica really reminds me of a trattoria you might stumble accross in the backstreets of Verona.
Will be back.
It is a small but cosy restaurant. It gets a little noisy but that is part of the experience.
Thin crust pizzas with generous amount of toppings. They make the best gnocchi in Melbourne. The gnocchi is so soft that it melts in your mouth.
Definitely worth trying, if you can get a seat!
Don't be fooled by this unassuming establishment that is tucked in a corner opposite of Lincoln Square. This place serves fantastic and authentic pizza and gnocchi. The tiramisu is a must try as well. However, it might be hard to get a table as it is always packed and the internal design may not be ideal.
Came here on a Friday night with a group of 4. It is quite a small cosy spot so I would definitely recommend making a reservation particularly with a large group.
We ordered 3 pizzas and a risotto, all came quite quickly and were absolutely delicious. The toppings were generous and the crusts was the perfect combination of crispy/doughy which I love.
The down side with really popular places is being told that you need to leave because they need your table. It absolutely kills the experience, especially when they didn't stipulate how long you have the table for.
From their handwritten menus we chose the salmon pizza and gnocchi. My friend raves about this pizza every time she goes here. The homemade gnocchi was soft, cheesy and melted in the mouth. The simple dishes were flavourful and it's easy to appreciate why people love this place. We topped these off with the decadently creamy tiramisu. The choices for dessert were pretty limited.
Low lighting gives this functional space a cozy feel. Some dishes are pre-made so you can't remove specific ingredients. Service was fast and polite, which is essential to enable the speedy turnover.
Great pizza! We ordered mushroom deluxe, mr john and puttanesca. Its reaally good, authentic italian taste , nicd thin crust, reasonably priced. I recommend you to book a table if coming on weekends, as its a small cramped place
this place has a great vibe, the food was authentic Italian (loved the clam pasta) let down unfortunately by seemingly sluggish, not very interested waiter staff. The pizzas were amazing but the desserts are a little underwhelming, and the green tea was lukewarm cloudy water??! Otherwise, great.
I absolutely love the pizza here! Home made base, very authentic and cute little restaurant. Awesome for dining in and take away, but I tend to get take away more as they are quite busy in here. My fave is the puttanesca and mushroom deluxe :)
This restaurant is very Melbourne. You come here if you're not afraid of carbs. We had pasta and a pizza. Both were really tasty. The service was really friendly and efficient. Highly recommend!
Went here for lunch on a weekday and the place was not full so we were seated immediately. Place was easy to find. We were a little bit hesitant to try the place due to some negative reviews about the staffs being rude however the staffs greeted us with a smile and was very attentive. Tried 2 pastas and 1 pizza and the taste was great! Wait time for the food was quick enough. Will definitely be back!
One of the best place in Melbourne for pizza and pastas . Simply authentic and very home cooked style crispy pizza 🍕 plus the pasta was hand made too... yum. The only I dislike is the parking nearby can be rather challenging...
Nice coffee, great gourmet pizza (we had the Mario), but the prawn chilli garlic was rather disappointing. The shallot and garlic were burnt, prawn was ok, lots of chilli oil. My friend had clam pasta which she said it was average compared to the price.
A staple — and fit for any occasion, crowd or night of the week. No fussiness here, just solid pizza, incredible pasta (try the gnocchi!) and the crisp radicchio salad is hard to beat!
Atmosphere always on point, all walks of life who the food is hard to beat. A favourite for a decade now, hopefully for decades to come!
Overall great service, although one if the girls who was taking the order did struggle a little with the garlic allergy situation. There was a guys who was super friendly and helpful with he heater situation outside . The food was delicious and we'll presented. Highly recommend to the community.
Kaprica 🤤
This quaint little restaurant on Grattan St will haunt my dreams for the foreseeable future.
The sweet aromas and delightful tastes did not disappoint me even with family up playing the restaurant significantly.
I had the lamb ragoo with pappadelle and a garlic pizza. The slow roasted garlic pizza was the best I've ever had and the ragoo was absolutely delicious too.
The chilli oil they offer is a must try also.
Thank you for consistently fresh and soft gnocchi with classic tomato sauce and the mushroom pizza. And thank you for such great hospitality, we really enjoy dining in here :)
We came here for a last minute dinner. We sat in the courtyard. I had eaten pizza the night before so really did not feel like that again. The menu here outside of pizza is extremely limited. Approx four pasta choices and olives and antipasto and that's it. No specials. So for me not a place I would return to as I don't like limited choice. The antipasto was fresh and nice. But nothing out of the ordinary. The three pastas were nice but again nothing extraordinary. But I would like to say we had an excellent waiter. We did wait a long time for our mains tho. Pizza did look good on the other tables.
Loved their gnocchi and pizza! They were sooooo good. The gnocchi was tender, not soggy. The flavor was there, just loved it.
Last time I was here was 3 years ago! Went there last night for a dinner with few friends and still blew my mind!
Everything was super tasty! My favourite are the chilli prawn and the meatball pasta.
Will definitely come back for those two :)
Been coming here for years!!! For the pizzas or pasta! Better for you to share, at least you could try couple of things on their menu. Better to call to reserve a table, as they could get quite busy.
Hey guys! Incredibly delicious. We are in love with the taste and freshness of the food. We would like to revisit next time we are in Melbourne. I wish you guys have a shop in Sydney right next to my house. :D
