Review Meat Market South Wharf - Melbourne

It was a mixed bag for me. It started brilliantly with the starter of chicken and corn croquette. This was my first time eating a croquette, and it exceeded my expectations. The texture, the flavour, the presentation, all five stars. The mains were where things let me down. I had a medium well eye fillet. The steak itself was amazing, cooked to perfection, super tender, superb flavour. But the sides of onion and chips made the whole dish looked very cheap, especially the fact the chips were thin cut. My partner has a lamb rump. The lamb was a lot rawer than what we liked each to be. The sides were very salty. The only good thing about this dish was the portion, which was very generous. Thankfully the meal ended superbly with the Tiramisu. Perfect dessert to share for two, fantastic presentation, rich flavour. The service was also great, all the staffs were very friendly. I would have rated 4.5 stars overall if I can, but definitely not 5. So I can only give it a 4.

This spot is magnificent! The staff was fantastic and the nourishment was splendid. Bunches of decisions yet can suggest the eye filet, rosemary potatoes, and seared cauliflower. Simple to get to with loads of stopping close by and they offer bunches of treats or you can go for a short walk after supper along the water as there are heaps of spots to snatch some sweet. Can get somewhat smoky inside as the steaks are cooked in the cafe before you yet it disperses rapidly. The incredible eating background in an extraordinary spot!

This place is awesome! The staff were excellent and the food was brilliant. Lots of choices but can definitely recommend the eye fillet, rosemary potatoes and fried cauliflower. Easy to get to with lots of parking nearby and they offer lots of dessert or you can take a short stroll after dinner along the water as there's lots of places to grab some dessert. Can get a little smoky inside as the steaks are cooked in the middle of the restaurant in front of you but it dissipates quickly. Excellent dining experience in a great spot!!!

Awesome place. We had a great fun.

Came here for the lunch special and left feeling disappointed and underwhelmed. The staff were friendly and helpful and the burger I ordered was nice enough but unfortunately that's where the positives end. My partner's steak was subpar quality. It was tough, chewy, full of gristle and difficult to cut through. I'd consider it inedible (and for a place that specialises in meat that's a pretty sad indictment). Won't be back in a hurry.

Came by for dinner as we had just come from the Southbank DFO. It is one of the many restaurants lining the river in this area. We had options of sitting inside or out, and we opted for in. The outside area was on the riverside so it is quite a nice place to eat if it's not too hot. Quite a few food options, both for meat eaters and non-meat eaters. I had the grilled corn and the halloumi skewers. We were seated next to the grill and it was nice watching the chefs grilling and then dressing the food. The food was tasty but thought it was on the pricey side. Unsurprisingly, it is suited for carnivores.

Nice patio seating option to enjoy the weather and a little people watching. Lemon pepper calamari was cooked and seasoned well. Steak was done right at medium rare and was tasty without extra sauces. Service was prompt and friendly. Pricing was a little steep for the quality and quantity of the food.

Honestly pretty overpriced for what you get. We visited for lunch and the place was not busy. The initial service was good and no real complaints here. Food wise it was very disappointing and then when coupled with the price it just makes it not worth it. I do not recommend their burgers, you could do better at home, in fact I'm pretty sure the buns they use are just the cheap tear away buns found at Coles. Other people I was with ordered the salmon and a steak both were ok but nothing that amazing. Overall I left disappointed in the food, when I looked at the menu and the prices I was expecting great tasting food but what we got was not anywhere near worth the cost.

On a very hot and humid Saturday afternoon, I met with my friend in South Wharf for lunch at Meat Market. We discovered this place due to TheFork promotion.<br/><br/>🔆LOCATION🔆<br/><br/>Meat Market is situated at the end of South Wharf Promenade, opposite to DFO. It is a very spacious restaurant with an open kitchen. There are outdoor seating area facing the Yarra River and also along Dukes Walk.<br/><br/>🔆SERVICE🔆<br/><br/>I arrived early at 11.50am, 10 minutes before the restaurant was due to open. As the front door was open, I walked in. A waitress saw me and called across from the dining area to say that the restaurant was not open. I said that I had a reservation at 12noon and if it was possible to take a seat inside as it was quite hot outside. She politely obliged and looked at my booking and grabbed two menu’s and directed me to the other side of the dining and seated me just inside but next to the folding doors outside. I could feel the heat from outside and asked if they were going to close the doors and turn on the air con. She advised that the air con is already on and will take a while to cool. However, I didn’t think it helped much anyways given the open kitchen could feel the heat from the cooking and also humidity from outside which was rather uncomfortable.<br/><br/>🔆MENU/PRICE🔆<br/><br/>My friend and I ordered: <br/><br/>Pan seared Tasmanian salmon, $34.00<br/>(with avocado, mango, red onion & watercress salad with a macadamia & lime cream)<br/><br/>Smokey BBQ’d half chicken, $29.00<br/>(with sweet potato, black beans, roasted red peppers, corn, cucumber & salsa verde)<br/><br/>Beetroot, pumpkin, feta & walnut salad, $9.00<br/><br/>🔆VERDICT🔆<br/><br/>We were very happy to have only paid half price for our meals. Given the great promotion from TheFork it was definitely great value. <br/>My friend’s pan seared Salmon was cooked well and the salad complemented well.<br/><br/>My BBQ chicken on the other hand was only 70% cooked. There were still blood oozing out from parts of the meat and closer to the bone it was quite raw. If the chicken was cut into smaller pieces, I think it would have been cooked better. I requested my meal without the black beans. There were only minimal pieces of red pepper, no corn or cucumber or salsa verde. Instead I got small pieces of sweet potato and carrot. It was very odd.<br/>Lastly our beetroot salad, looked pretty on the plate, but tasted rather bland.

It was ok..nothing more than that.. Lamb rump which I got for $32 was nothing fancy.. just ok.. Not sure if it’s applicable to this dish, but no ody even asked me if I like it rare, medium or well-done.

We went there for team lunch. I ordered a grass fed steak with butter. It was horrible. My boss had the same dish too. He described it as even the most messed up steak he cooked at home is better than what we are eating. A medium rare steak came out like a beef tartare. It was very disappointing. We have been working nearby for about 5 years now. We always pop by for food and drinks. The quality of food have been going down hill there. We are rather disappointed

it was a really nice environment with a great view, the food was great and it came fast. The cauliflower fries were my highlight, but the rest of the sides were probably a bit pricy for the serving size. Otherwise, the steak was cooked well but the medium well was a bit undercooked. It was good how the kids food came first, and the rest of the wait time was great too. Overall the staff were nice and the ambience was great, with lovely decoration. There wasn’t a specialty dish or anything that would urge us to come back again but it was a good experience nevertheless :)

With a maitre d showing you to your table, Meat Market is definitely a grand place.<br/><br/>Ordered:<br/>🥩 250gm grain fed scotch fillet: with mashed potatoes, green beans and red wine jus ($29.00)<br/>+ 🍹 lemon lime bitter<br/><br/>Review:<br/>Scotch fillet is a good cut of steak, especially when you have it cooked medium! Can be considered blasphemy for some, but medium is awesome for me.<br/><br/>The mashed potatoes was soft and creamy, with the green beans adding that crunch and texture.<br/>The fat on the scotch fillet steak was cooked just right that it gave you a savoury punch; the flavour making your stomach feel so happy and full.<br/><br/>As others have mentioned, the service is a bit difficult. Especially when I was sitting outside with my friend, getting her attention ended up with me chasing her down and back into the main restaurant haha.<br/><br/>$30 is definitely a bit exxy for lunch though...but worth for a once in a while treat 🥳.

We really enjoyed dinner here. Had the chicken skewers for entree to share and chicken breast and steak for mains and unfortunately no space left for desserts.
Linda
Both the eye-fillet and ribs were cooked nicely. However, the portion of the ribs was embarrassing. $36 for 5 ribs. Rip off much? The sides were also mediocre. My husband was suspicious that the wedges served with the ribs were purchased frozen wedges. The dessert was so-so. A nice meat meal, not of good value for your money.

First time in Melbourne and stumbled on this place when wandering along the south wharf esplanade. Nice and warm with a relaxed atmosphere. The music was quieter than most of the surrounding restaurants and one of the reasons I put my foot in the door. Bonus was to have a nice view of the night lights glistening down the river. The service was great, I was seated quickly and did not have to wait long for the lovely duck and porcini ravioli, which I thoroughly enjoyed along with the months showcased Victorian Shiraz from the menu.

Having been here before and quite enjoying the experience, we decided to return when we got a discount code. As it was an early seating and a quiet night, we were given the option of where we’d like to sit and chose outside. It was a good choice. The staff were friendly and efficient and made sure we knew the specials etc and were happy to cater for a small child. They even had pencils and paper for them to colour in. The steak was cooked to our liking and while it didn’t present very aesthetically (I guess there’s only so much you can do with a piece of meat), was tasty. I had been hoping for chips over fries, but the sides were very large and great for sharing.
Crabapples For Lunch
This is more of a 2.5 stars. My wife had a nice meal here previously so we came to have their lunch specials. It was past peak hour and the place was quiet, but the atmosphere was warm and rustic. Our waitress was friendly.<br/><br/>I had the meatball entree and steak main, and she had the calamari entree and beef cheek main. These were $29 for 2 courses and came with a drink (we had lemon lime bitters). Unfortunately, we found the food mostly disappointing. The meatballs were quite nice and light, but the Napoli sauce was quite tangy and overpowering. It tasted mostly like tomato paste without much else soften the flavour, and I had to make sure I didn't pick up too much sauce with each bite, as well as 'dilute' the taste with a bite of the toasted bread. The bread was quite nice - dense but well toasted. I'm also no connoisseur of meatballs, but I couldn't really tell the meatballs were made of duck to be honest, though they were decent. The calamari was light and crispy, so that was a positive dish.<br/><br/>The beef cheek was pretty bad, unfortunately. It was incredibly tough and in a huge chunk that was difficult to cut up. Naturally, beef cheek should be very soft and melt in your mouth, but this was so tough we had to leave most of it on the plate. The steak was decent, cooked medium rare as requested. The accompanying fries were generic shoestring fries. I like a good char on a steak but some parts of the steak were quite bitter from the charred surface, so I think it went a bit overboard. The Paris butter on top also didn't really do much for me except make it more oily, so eventually put most of it aside. Something like what you'd get at Bistro Guillaume for example would be much nicer, where you'd be able to spread the butter nicely without it melting.<br/><br/>Overall, for the price and considering the restaurant prides itself in meat, it was quite a disappointing experience and my wife in particular didn't leave full. This was unfortunate as the last time she had the chicken pie she was very happy with it.

I've stopped by the meat marker another place set by the docklands. Set by the water it was relaxing to watch the water and have a beer. Didn't try any food in this occasion
The Casual Diner
Came by here for lunch with some colleagues. The lunch time menu was pretty good value for 2 dishes (entree and main) plus a drink for $29. Had the calamari and the sausage and fennel and both were good. Great value for what you get in this part of town. The steaks looked good but quite pricey, but will come back and give these a go at some stage. Service was attentive but food took a while to come out. Great location by the river though Especially sitting outside. Very pleasant on a sunny afternoon.

Lamb Rump <br/>Overall the dish was okay, honestly ordered it for the meat despite the fact I don't like capsicum eggplant but mixing it with the Olive tapenade made it more easier to eat. The meat was kinda of flavourless just basic, the middle was really raw and had to cut through. They slices were thick though I guess that makes up for the taste.I don't think it the dish is worth $36 but if u like capsicum and eggplant, go for it.

My reviews<br/><br/>Tom, Sam and the Meat Marketeers are most fortunate to have Emily on their team. She excels in all areas of hospitality oriented customer service and is very swift in getting things done. <br/><br/>We were particularly impressed with her respect and time to given to the senior citizens dining alongside us, something that we see less and less of these days.<br/><br/>The service complimented the food on this occasion, though we assure you that's not a bad thing!<br/><br/>That food though. Double lamb chops basking gloriously 'twixt a lake of red onion jus, with pontoons of sweet potatoes bobbing merrily alongside (I swear we're not wasted while writing this we only had one glass of red wine each 😏)<br/><br/>A dark chocolate fortress of fondant, adorned with spires of almond brittle comprised half of our shared dessert. The second innings hit us for six straight into a sticky mess of date pudding and vanilla ice cream. Ohhhh yessss.<br/><br/>We totally resonate with the kind of commerce being transacted at the Meat Market. These humble merchants shall return!

Was craving for steak and i thought we would give it a try. The service wasnt very pleasant. We were standing waiting for our table for almost 10 minutes and no one came to serve us. Finally got to our table and found and it was rather smokey inside and we requested to relocate outside instead and the manager declined and said that it was fully booked outside when half the tables were vacant and empty. When the food arrived, steak was average and was slightly burnt.

This place is very hit and miss. The hits were the drinks. The cocktails were outstanding. Penicillin was the stand out but all the cocktails we had were great. They were also very helpful in recommending an excellent bottle of wine, a Malbec from Argentina (see photos) that was very smooth and something I would not have known to choose. Another hit was the deep fried cauliflower and the rosemary potatoes. The bread was also amazing!<br/>The missed were the beef capaccio which was a cured meat not a raw meat. Very odd and very disappointing. The other big miss was overcooked steak. It was supposed to be medium rare but it was grey. Weird for a steak place. The tuna tartare was ok but a bit tasteless and the prawn cocktail was ordinary. None of us could taste the prawns at all.<br/>One of our steaks had a hair on it and we sent it back. The manager handled this very well. He offered another meal but the recipient didn't want any food cooked in the kitchen after that. Instead he gave us some free desserts which were nice. We did say it's ok we don't want anything but he was keen to make us happy. How restaurants react to setbacks is important and that's why they're getting a 3 star rather than 2. The service at this place is good but the kitchen is letting them down.<br/>Overall I'd would never go for the food again. But the drinks, bread and dessert were good. Unfortunately that's just not enough to make up for such pricey but ordinary food. Disappointing for the front of house staff who clearly do a great job.

Ordered the Porterhouse sirloin steak which comes out with butter on top with shoestring fries, as a weekday lunch special ($20.00) that comes with a drink. The meat was average it had a burnt smell to it, and it wasn’t quite Medium Rare as requested – disappointing seeing as this place specializes in meat. Lucky it came with fries and a house red wine. Service was good, and meals came out at reasonable time.

Just finished my meal at meat market where I can only explain the experience as robbery! Went on a 50% off deal for food through The Fork. Up until paying, the service was excellent by the lovely wait staff. THEN the bill! Came with no discount applied and once explained was taken away to rectify...Or so I thought....the poor waitress was sent back to our table to explain the steak I ordered off the specials board was not half price ( bearing in mind the special board was $80 and the menu steak was $75, dry age only difference). The manager then came out and said the deal didn't cover "special offers" as stated on the website..."offers" yes but not a special off the menu, I know that, this steak was a special board item not an offer... customers know the difference! He then had the cheek to blame the French waitress for a language barrier, there was no barrier! Then blamed the owners for telling him to charge full price, should you not tell the customer when he orders the dish?? After a scene in the restaurant I paid the money and left very disappointed! You obviously need the money! Shame on you guys

Went to have lunch with wife and friend, it was lovely. The waitress have been very friendly, and food quality is absolutely amazing. We sat outdoor which was great in summer.

I have been to Meat Market several times and I also found that although it looks a bit upmarket, they are really good for kids. <br/><br/>They have a dedicated kids menu as well that’s consists of steak frites (steak and fries), burger and fries, fish and chips and chicken... although they are not very healthy the portion size is pretty good for $15. My hubby and eldest both ordered burgers (one normal and one kids meal) and we could barely tell them apart from the size! (However obviously my husband’s one tasted better as it had a better cut of meat and more seasoning)<br/><br/>My other kiddo had steak and fries and he loved that as well.<br/><br/>I wasn’t feeling hungry so I only had a salmon crudo. I find the fish is fresh but not super fresh and it doesn’t have much flavours or contrasting textures in it. I would have love some crunch and maybe some flavoured oil (maybe basil infused or dill infused oil) through. I also got a cheeky glass of Prosecco which goes really well with the salmon crudo. Yum yum

We both had an eye fillet coldslaw frys and dianne sauce medium to well was cooked perfectly. Staff were very friendly location was great. Had a bottle of Pino which went down great. So happy to have found a place in melbourne that can cook a steak perfectly. Came the same time last year nothing has changed.<br/>

Found this place strolling along around near DFO south wharf and decided to try it out for late lunch. We had the express lunch and ordered the Lamb cutlets & the Swordfish. The lamb cutlets were great however be aware that there is not much lamb as there is fat. Other than that, the meal was perfect size and had a refreshing chickpea salad as an accompaniment. The swordfish was perfect and beautifully plated. Definitely recommend this place for lunch. Staff were friendly as well.

Absolutely hands down the best restaurant experiences I’ve ever had !!!<br/><br/>I use to work for a celebrity chef in the United States of America and I have never seen such outstanding friendly efficient service, quality food and excellent experiences in my time there.<br/><br/>This was beyond belief a magical night and to be seated with the event planers and host made it that much more special.<br/><br/>Neil and I are both truly grateful for our whole experience, so we thoroughly thank the entire team.

I visit MM regularly for their lunch specials. The attentive and welcoming service is always well complemented by a buzzing vibe. 100% recommend their swordfish lunch special and the burger is also delish.

For our team lunch for 10 people we decided to check out the Express lunch menu - with a great choice of the One Course $20, two Courses $29 and three Courses $34 was a great offer.<br/><br/>Including  a glass of house wine, pot of Furphy or soft drink we were very happy with the quick efficient service.<br/><br/>We tried everything from the pan fried “Aphrodite” haloumi, chargrilled zucchini, red peppers, eggplant, fresh herbs lemon to the basque style chicken bites, with smoked paprika and roasted red peppers were very delicious along with the  a<br/>charred sourdough...will be back for this 😋.<br/><br/>I enjoyed my Murray River salt and pink peppercorn dusted Port Philip Bay calamari with  which was cooked well, tender crispy with a very generous serving of the rocket and roasted garllic aioli<br/><br/>We also enjoyed the chargrilled Swordfish with cauliflower puree, pepperonata and aged balsamic and the pan roasted chicken breast with brocolini, capers, mint, chilli and lemon.<br/><br/>But the most popular meal was the classic Black Angus Cheeseburger with Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, pickles and fries.

Went to celebrate my wife's birthday. Asked for a small dessert(cake) and a symbolic candle - was told that would be arrange, no problem.  Did not happen - ok, first disappointment.<br/><br/>OK, so why give it a 3 rating?  The meal started off well enough - 3 dozen oysters between the 6 of us. These were absolutely fantastic!  Is there a difference between the local calamari versus the imported frozen ones?  For sure and was so happy we ordered the "common" entree.  Had a couple other entrees even the dinner rolls (for my daughter). $4 for 2 rolls...but she finished one before the butter came.  And when we asked where's the oil, we were told thats not included. For crying out loud, read your own menu - so second disappointment.<br/><br/>On a positive note the menu is beautifully presented and obviously written by someone who is passionate about meat and how to carefully cook it. As testament to the chef's interpretation and skill we thoroughly recommend your seafood and vegetarian dishes.  What?  The fish was probably the nicest meat dish and the cauliflower steak.  So what about the meat?  Thats disappointment #3.  After asking the waiter twice if I ordered my $65 500g porterhouse steak medium rare, will it be medium rare?  I was pointed to the half page in the menu where they explain the cooking temperature. Guess the cook did not read the menu as it was closer to medium well.  Had it been sitting there too long?  No offer to replace! And unlikely to have accepted given the time it took for the mains to come out.<br/><br/>Which leads to disappointment #4. Expensive parking!  Not sure what arrangement they might have with the car park that encourages them to keep diners waiting so long for their staple dishes.<br/><br/>My wife said should order the cauliflower steak next time.  Sadly there will not be one.<br/><br/>For such expensive steaks, there are better options in the suburbs (away from the overrated south bank/wharf) where the steaks are cooked as ordered...and parking is free!

My first experience at Meat Market was on Tuesday 10 July, and what an experience it was. Last minute decision to walk into what looked like a busy and thriving venue. The waitstaff were absolutely lovely and accomodating and without fuss arranged a table for us and the kids. <br/>Kids entertainment in the form of colouring activities and even a menu they could colour on meant that I got to enjoy a glass of wine and delicious dinner with my best friend. <br/><br/>We ordered the Cape to Coast... WOW! Talk about food for your dollar!! You can’t beat this! The steak was cooked to perfection, the scallops and Morton bay bug were to die for!! And the oysters... YUM! <br/>This also included 2 glasses of wine EACH... all of this for only $84! No where else in Melb can you eat such amazing delicious food, paired with a perfect wine for $84! <br/><br/>On what was a busy night, the atmosphere was thriving, smiles on everyone’s faces, happy kids and happy me! <br/><br/>I would HIGHLY recommend this venue and the Cape to Coast for couples, families, birthdays, any event really. <br/><br/>5 stars to Meat Market!!!!

They need to replace the chef! Ordered a 600g medium rare rib eye. Came burnt so we decided to slice it half way and see if it's cooked to the request. Turns out it's overcooked inside as well(between medium-well and well-done). We didn't have a bite and showed the steak to the waitress and she took it back to the kitchen. 1 minute later she came back with the same steak and telling us that the chef said this is how medium-rare looks like here and asked if we want to cook this steak further more on the grill. Huh? To cook a overcooked steak further on grill? Either way they didn't offer to cook a new one so we decided to just eat as it is. Half way through the meal, another waitress came and asked us how our meal was going and we just said we didn't like the steak as it was overcooked. She replied "ohhh" and walked away. WALKED AWAY and didn't say another word, not even to apologise or anything. The restaurant has nice river view and that's it, maybe come for a drink but would never come back to eat again.

Meat Market South Wharf<br/><br/>The Meat Market South Wharf located on the city fringe towards Docklands. The location is great, however inconvenient for those traveling via public transport.<br/><br/>The restaurant/bar is clean and modern with an open view of the Yarra River with an average cost of $25p/p for a simple meal and drink.<br/><br/>The dishes we've tried was the Wilderness beef minute steak with Café de Paris butter and shoe string fries and Classic Black Angus Cheeseburger with Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, pickles and fries.<br/><br/>The dishes itself were bland, with a limited range of sauce and seasoning. We were disappointed in the quality of our food, noticeably the sauce is quite runny and watery whilst the mains being quite greasy.<br/><br/>Our overall experience was positive, however, for the price, there are other options available within the area.

The food was ok although not enough to have another try. But what was really disappointing was a very bad attitude and service especially from the manager (?) If you ever go there please BE CAREFULL NOT TO ORDER ANY COFFEE!!! In the land who everyone claim to be top barista and expert coffee-drinking I had the worst dark liquid and when enquire just had a darker face than the liquid served! A planned enjoyable dinner that was totally spoiled... Luckily good restaurants are easy to find in Melbourne, this was only an unpleasant exception...and no more.

Had to do a spot of shopping at DFO South Wharf and got hungry. Wandered into the meat market for lunch. I ordered the chicken with broccolini and a soft drink as part of the express weekend lunch ~$26.  The other order for the table was a hamburger with chips and a beer also for $26. Overall, the food is ok.   I just thought it was really pricey for the serving.  I was hoping to get a whole chicken breast but only 1/3 of the chicken made it to the plate and it was a little dry. Great for portion control but had better value food some where else.  Wagyu hamburger was ok. I guess the prices at the restaurant reflects the location.  Service was attentive because there was no one at the restaurant during the time we were there.

I hadn’t been here for a couple of year and decided to return for a Friday lunch. The quality of this establishment has deteriorated significantly. It probably has become too commercialised, all about the money, and less about the food and customers.<br/>Ps. I got the wagyu burger where it was suppose to be medium rare. Pretty much came out well done, dry and tough. We had 4 of these and all came out the same.

Booked online, quick and easy as well as getting the table as requested. <br/>Nice views of the water front and the city. Upon arrival we were seated promptly and waiters were pleasant and attentive. <br/>Ordered the cocktail for two, that keep two going nicely for the evening. It did however, take a very long time to receive the drink. One of the waiters noticed how long it took and apologised, while it didn’t change how long we waited it was good that she noticed and said something. <br/>Ordered the gnocchi and the 300gm Cape porterhouse. The gnocchi was very tasty, perfectly cooked. If you were hungry you might need some bread or entree. <br/>The steak was nice, but not $62 nice, I was having second thoughts about a porterhouse, but given it was recommended I thought what the hell. That is $62 just got the steak, no side. The was a $9 bucket of fries, which were very nice, and could stop going back. The meat was cooked quite well, maybe slightly closer to medium than med rare. The Jus was really nice, great flavour, overall a bit disappointed by the steak. <br/><br/>I would be happy to go again and give it a second chance as you can feel the potential.

Good service, nice layout of the place. The grill is set in the middle of the dining area so you can see your steak as it's being cooked. Had the rib eye, was cooked medium rare as requested and very nice. I have to say it was disappointing to see very little in terms of salads - even as a side dish, they only had a simple cos lettuce that came dressed in lime juice and parsley. Nice, but really would be great if they could just add another salad or two to go with the meat. Good selection of wine and drinks in general. Nice view of the Yarra if you can get a seat outside.

Nice friendly service from our waiter, but when you have crumbed calamari for $19 you do not want it coming out like the bus-boy had eaten half of it at the pass. Almost the same feeling you get when you empty out a packet of chips and realise how little there actually is. Other than that, the tap water and the iceberg lettuce covering half the plate where more calamari should have been, tasted fresh.
Russ
I went there this afternoon for family Christmas lunch had a steak medium rare and chips it was very nice all for $20.00 would go back there
Emily
One of the worst steaks I've ever had! The biggest shock was when we were told that the chef only does medium rare or medium well steaks. What?? We like medium, so there was no way we were going to opt for the well end and risk a bone dry, rubber block. So medium rare it was. Unfortunately, what we got was basically rare all the way through. The steak itself had no grilled flavour and felt like it had been cooked hours ago then put in a warmer because it was so soft and and chewy.<br/><br/>According to the waitress, the choice between medium rare/well is because it gets too busy. But the restaurant was super quiet and less than 10 tables and for a meat specialist restaurant, it seems ridiculous that the chef can't cook steak.<br/><br/>$20 lunch special with steak frites (bearnaise) and a drink drew us in. We were told the steak frites come with only frites, so we also ordered a slaw ($9.50) - except the steak frites come with a mini slaw anyway.... The slaw we ordered was a bit bland and frankly, insultingly priced for some cabbage and vinegar. You don't need that much slaw! Why not do half sizes for sides?
Elaineeeee
Spent my birthday here and the food is disappointing. Sad to say their grilled calamari with chorizo is dry and their cape grim porterhouse steak is also dry and chewy :(
Fabian Pellet
Was hopping for a great steak at ordered medium rare and medium and our streak arrived burred and well done. The steak was so burn and tasted like charcoal. The waitress was very cold and unfriendly.

We came here recently after being in the area. The food was ok, nothing particularly to rave about. Beef ribs for entree was had as a main and was tasty enough. The waygu beef burger was generous and was served with shoestring fries. The gnocchi were more like dumpling dough balls and lacked lightness and flavour. Service was lacking, the waitress acknowledged she was new but she didn't really know much about the menu and had to check with other staff several times. It took a long time for our order to come out despite there being only 2 other tables occupied. A disappointing experience overall.

We love the mains here but the chicken breast and pork belly are so delish! A standard usual for us :-)<br/>A lovely place to come after a walk around the wharf!<br/>

Came here for a Friday work lunch. Service was extremely slow for a table of 5. I ordered the lunch special grilled calamari for $20, which comes with a drink. Taste is good, but serving size is a bit small.
Melbstravel
We shared the smoke house special which was 2 smoked meats and sides for $60.<br/>Food was pretty good though I did have to add my own seasoning as I felt it was all very under seasoned. <br/>Great ambience sat looking out over the Yarra river.

Had the lunch time beef rib special..$25 inc drinks<br/><br/>The pumpkin ricotta gnocchi were also tasty<br/> <br/>The meat was tender enough to fall of the bone.. will be returning soon.<br/>

Went to explore the South Wharf Promenade to find the Meat Market.<br/><br/>This place is massive and yet empty during the weekend. The waiter told us that they are famous for their wagyu burger that they proudly make (bun and patty) and it's one of the best in Melbourne.<br/><br/>Well... it's definitely not the best burger I had here! The patty is really thick and not flavoursome.  It feels sad that the chef didn't put much effort into adding more flavour to such an expensive ingredient.<br/><br/>For the customer service: we saw our waiter only twice during the service so not much to say about it.

We came here for a lunch during one fine weekdays, when the place was not crowded only 5 or 6 tables were used. Hubby highly recommended it after he dined here for a couple of times with his work colleagues. We ordered the lunch menu: beef ribs and pappardelle seafood, total $50 included 2 drinks. We liked the pappardelle with the sweet and slightly spicy taste but unfortunately we disliked the ribs as it was served cold... Not sure if they had an off day? As hubby has eaten here for a number of times and it was never served cold. The onion rings were nice though.

The first time I was there, I thought that it was not too bad. Therefore when a friend visited, I suggested to go there. I left feeling disappointed.<br/><br/>We ordered one on the bone and on eye fillet to be medium rare. The eye fillet came out medium and the on the bone came out medium to medium well. Tough...<br/><br/>I would expect medium rare to still be a bit red in the middle and gradually pink with seared outer but what I got what all pink and no red in the middle.<br/><br/>Asked for a change and they did changed the on the bone but insisted that the eye filet was medium rare. They added that if I want a redder middle it will be rare and I will be charge for a second portion of meat if I want to change.<br/><br/>The on the bone came out rather chewy too. Made me wonder that it might be the quality of meat. We love the charcuterie though. Was really enjoying ourselves until the mains came. Service was friendly, ambience was good. Not too packed. Not sure about the steak anymore after the second visit.<br/><br/>The meat and the exchange did left a bad taste even though it started out well. I guess it's not hard to bring my money elsewhere for a better steak.
Good Food Good Mood
Popped in for a drunk prior to dinner elsewhere and gee can they make a martini (lychee in case you're wondering). Fairly slick interior and riverside positioning is always lovely. We hung around until the end of the fairly decent happy hour. Not a bad spot for post work drinks on a Friday night. I'll clearly have to return as that 1.2kg tomahawk steak has my name all over it

One of the most talked place is Meat Market due to the place is along side the river with amazing view and nice cool breeze. For lunch we order the fish and chips, I was surprised when I received it because it actually a whole fish cut in half, battery and deep fried. The steak here is nice. Tho it can get very very pack and you might have to wait longer than normal for food. The service here is great, lovely, friendly waitress who is very helpful when it comes to allergies. This resturant is pram, baby and children friendly the table has heaps of room apart from the next. Very spacey, and the outside area is undercover.

Another lovely evening dinning by the waterfront. You can't dine at South Wharf and not sit outside! . Like Bangpop we've been here just once, as part of a progressive exploration food tour. Why don't we dine here more often? It's far, and you're paying for the location, which is lovely on a midsummer night. Thanks to Dimmi's 50% offer we've been exploring much more than usual this month.

Friendly atmosphere and can't fault the service. My dinner date had the privilege of being able to order the 70 day old dried beef steak, which was a first due to the timing of the dish (only available on the menu for 2 days). Ordered medium rare, but unfortunately it was undercooked and came out blue and cold. Had to send it back. Take 2, the steak came out perfect and tasted great, but then the red wine reduction mixed with the red wine jus made the sauce very sticky and gave the meal an unpleasant taste. I ordered the chicken breast with gnocchi, pumpkin and sage butter - Beautiful! Chicken was just a tad over cooked but possibly because I had to wait for my dates dinner to arrive before I ate. Was very oily but still tasty and very filling. Very nice place to eat <br/>nevertheless.<br/>

Cant highly recommend, but a table stones throw from water on summers night is pretty good. eye fillet steak fabulous, but any other is tuff.Service awful and slow,clean=6out10

Definitely great value for money and good tasty food for lunch. Went there for a team lunch and we ordered the $20 lunch special. I had the steak frittes which was cooked perfectly the way I like it (medium well). You also get a drink, I got a lemon lime bitters. The food portion was generous, service was friendly. They can be busy on Fridays! Definitely recommended !

I think the plate dishes looks beautiful than it tastes. I had the lamb sausage main, it was delicious, loved it. But can a little on a sweet side for the sauce. The grilled stuffed squid is salty. Complained to the staff but insisted that is supposed to be that salty due to the chorizo cooked with it. Bad choice I reckon as is really salty. Either way I won't recommend at all unless there is a bowl of white rice as a side. The entree was the antipasto platter. Not bad but is very expensive.
Monty
Really really good steakhouse! Excellent variety of other meals too. We received fantastic service from all the wait staff and food arrived promptly. Steaks were well cooked to everyone's liking and the vegetarian gnocchi was very very tasty. Would definitely go again.

Went in the other night with a mate, and without a booking on a fairly busy Wednesday night they promptly moved a few things around and found us a table.<br/><br/>We were on a meat mission, and the Tomahawk did not disappoint!! They even have a Tomahawk special on Thursday for those who want to experience this awesome cut cooked to perfection, with aone wine thrown in.<br/><br/>Only minor letdown was the quality of options of sides. Personally i prefer more options to balance the dead cow on my plate, but i know it is enough for sone people!

6 of us booked into dinner on a Wednesday night. Decor was lovely. We had 2 waiter/ess who were polite but got drink orders wrong. Meals came out as per menu even though adjustments such as "no chozorio" were ignored. Possibly the worst moment was when a hair was found wrapped around a piece of pumpkin (this was instantly taken away and deleted from the bill). My steak was tiny but nicely cooked and my request for peppercorn sauce was substituted for a standard gravy??<br/>Overall dinner was a disappointment, but the location was great, and my dinner companions were above par. I'll try one of the neighboring restaurants next time...
Spaghetti Monster
Lunchtime specials offering a meal plus a drink (wine, beer or soft) starting from $20. I had the fish and chips which were ok but nothing special. Friends ordered the ribs that were delicious. Big discrepancies in portion sizes that they need to work on. My fish was at least 1.5 times the size of a another and one portion of ribs was literally almost twice the size as another.

We had a very unique  and different wedding reception  for our son on the weekend at an excellent venue Staff at Meat Market were amazing, very attentive service, very high attention to detail making everyone feel welcome and invited, with the kitchen the center of attention , an integrated outdoor pizza station  bar at the rear and a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces. A must if looking for a city and river setting in a bustling area. Definitely capable of taking on the big events.Such a memorable  perfect occasion  with all the guests commenting"Best Wedding Ever!" great venue for mingling not sitting at set table like  usual traditional weddings.Cannot recommend this venue enough.

We went there for dinner a couple of weeks ago and had the steak on the bone, the food was delicious. The steak was melt in your mouth, along with yummy chips and asparagus. The Bernais sauce was Devine and our French waiter Francois was friendly and funny.

Daniel not happy come from Perth WA walked all the way down from plaza hotel as says open till 10pm on sunday on tomato app i suggest u change that misleading info
Melbourne Epicurean Juror
Lunched here at 11:40 am and ordered a $20 lunch special of grilled Chicken (gem cos, cherry tomato, prosciutto with kewpie dressing), which included a drink, then for dessert their Chocolate Fondue (strawberry sorbet, crème anglais & chocolate soil) at $15. The Chicken was served steaming hot & within 12 minutes of ordering and was really nice and even though the chicken was of reasonable quantity the overall plate was half full of gem cos. The dessert however took an eternity to be served, about 35 minutes but full of contrasting flavours. The waitress Lily who served me was very friendly & carried a great smile, obviously she likes working there but seriously this venue needs more than 2 wait staff even for a moderately busy lunch period, all the apologies and reasons given don't really make up for the long dessert delay.<br/><br/>The Juror's Verdict: Food 3.5/5, Service Provision 4/5, Will I return: Maybe - I wasn't overly impressed<br/><br/>Phill Jury (food critic & writer)

Southwharf is one of those places you forget is so close and has so much good stuff going on with a couple of good pubs, several good restaurants including great Japanese, Vietnamese, Spanish and German. Meat Market is your legendary steak place, with a fridge boasting 1.2kgs Tomahawk steaks you know this is serious! Dinner time can indulge in oysters, croquettes, lamb shanks and pork belly as well as some very reasonably priced steaks with eye fillet, Scotch, Cape Grim Porterhouse or a whole roast duck!
Gastrology
Gastrology recently explored the South Wharf Promenade on a gastronomic tour of six eateries. It was a delight to visit Melbourne’s oldest but newest riverside neighbourhood. The dining showcased the versatility of the dining precinct through the Progressive Dinner's five-course degustation which took us through the renowned Melbourne restaurants Akachochin, Bohemian, BangPop, Common Man and Meat Market.
The Food Society
Set in the stunning South Wharf precinct, Meat Market offers pasture fed beef from some of Australia’s best ethical producers, as well as chicken, seafood, lamb and kangaroo sourced in Victoria. Hearty proteins are available in all forms and sizes (think Cape Grim porterhouses and Kilcoy eye fillets) and come dressed with a range of classic sauces, from Bordelaise jus to a trio of mustards. Those looking to impress can turn it up a notch with a whole roast duck or 1kg of crispy pork belly, although make sure to leave up to a 45 minute wait for these gems busy periods.

Went there on a rainy afternoon, too late for lunch and too early for dinner. My friend and i got offered the snack menu which still had a great selection on it. No disapointment on the food, the wine and the service, will come back, whether it is raining or not !

Meat market is a cool place with a chill vibe, an open kitchen in the centre of the restaurant and cool little features. The menu is not huge but has a variety of options to satisfy any appetite! The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Meat Market at South Wharf is a stunning (heritage-listed la-di-da) venue on the Yarra River. You simply can’t help but notice it when you walk pass, especially if you’re a carnivore like me and you spot their meats on display. PAN-SEARED SCALLOPS. With silky cauliflower puree, curry leaf and crisp prosciutto. And oh yes, it does taste as good as it looks. When everyone was courteously sharing their starters, I was secretly VERY reluctant to.
J0yy173
Tender, finger-licking good ribs covered with a sweet maple bourbon glaze - delicious from the first bite. This is a haven for the carnivores, serving the usual cuts and forms. Beware - you won't fit into your usual size in the nearby DFO after finishing here.

Popped in for a quick<br/>Lunch & had the 200g porterhouse steak with chips & bernaise, steak was well cooked as were the chips. The sauce was flavoursome & it didn't take me long to devour this meal. Has heard the meat here was pretty good & it certainly did not disappoint
Oni San
Wow... Just... Wow. The steak here was out of this world good. Perfectly cooked with excellent caramelisation and char, just exquisite. And then, there was everything else. Limp salad, horrifically overcooked gnocchi for my vegetarian other, so much so that it was basically mash, and a side of creamy goats cheese mushrooms that was close to gag worthy, the balance was so far off. <br/><br/>Unless all you want is a good steak with sauce, avoid this place like the plague. Head up to Plus 5 and have a drink and some charcuterie instead.<br/><br/>Yuck.
MissSarma
Had the grilled chicken main, very very bland. Staff are friendly and very attentive though. Fitout and atmosphere was nice. Very close to DFO.

Horrible steak. I've had steak that was too salty before but never too sweet. Seriously, who puts sugar on steak?? I asked the waiter why the steak was so sweet & he said he'd check. The head waitress then came over & essentially asked what my problem was<br/><br/>On top of that, none of the wines on the wine list were available as advertised. I'm no wine expert but all of the wines we ordered were several years younger than the ones on the menu. Either have the wines one the menu or change the menu to match the wines <br/><br/>You'd think a place with the word meat in the name would know how to do steak. You'd be wrong. <br/><br/>Don't bother with this place at all
Michy
Stumbled here after a long morning of shopping at DFO one Saturday. Quick and attentive service. Fish and chips were a hit with my boyfriend. I had the wagyu burger which i found very nice but a tad undercooked for my liking. Bill came to approx $55 for the 2 of us. Overall wasn't blown away so probably wouldn't be back....but nice place nonetheless

Open kitchen, Clean place and friendly knowledgeable staff. Peaceful river view. <br/>Marinated Lamb Backstrap cous cous salad, mint & honey yoghurt was good, every thing goes well together. <br/>Gippsland Eye Fillet with peppercorn jus was cooked great, well done what I want and goes well with the peppercorn jus.<br/>Heirloom Tomato, Beetroot, Labneh, Mixed Leaf Salad was great with good mixture and dressing.<br/>Hot food come with a cold plate😓☹😡<br/>Why this waiter put napkins behind his back, in his pants? Doesn't matter for what purpose still doesn't look good😲🙊🙈

Site is pleasant, service is polite but food is average by taste and a bit off the prices asking probably due to its rental. Snow White is a lovely mocktail tuna is beautifully presented nothing wrong but as mentioned earlier nothing special to draw you back again...

Lining the banks of the Yarra and part of the South Wharf precinct, the Meat Market serves up well prepared fare. We popped in on a weekend for lunch and were impressed by the range of reasonably priced and delicious lunch options on offer.
MSY123
This was the selected venue for my work Christmas party for 2015, the company footed a never-ending bar tab and finger foods were going around, so I shouldn't be complaining. <br/>With it's pleasant South Wharf scenery, Meat Market's not too shabby on the visual spectacles. The kitchen area acts as a partition for the seated and standing areas. The shared 'washing up' area is elegantly designed with good taste.<br/>The catered food on offer comprised of Sliders, mini Fish & Chups, Fried Calamari and other snacky bites.<br/><br/>Meat Market is not necessarily a bad place, it just falls into the boring safe category and most surrounding options seem just that much more 'fun'.

“Feeling the urge to eat some meat, one Monday evening we decided to go to Meat Market South Warf – one of the only restaurants which sold steak on a Monday without an unusual eating time for 5 adults. This would be our second dining experience at this restaurant and it impressed once again. The steaks were good quality and cooked perfectly with attentive and friendly staff.”

Stopped in for an early dinner - a random choice as it was on my way & the menu looked good. Was greeted warmly & showed to a table. Unable to sit outside (presumably these were reserved) but this was fine as the view was easily visible & inside was cooler on a warm Melbourne day.<br/>Warm attentive service throughout my visit which always makes the experience better.<br/>Love the decor - doors that open up to enable a great view of the river. Wooden floors with neutral colours. Love love love the open kitchen in the middle of the room!! A real plus as you can see & smell what is happening. You know you are in for a good meal when they happily show off their skills. <br/>The wine list was not huge but had a great selection of most varieties. So good to see Rose & Pinot Gris during summer & also a great range of reds which is I think essential in a 'meat' restaurant. I chose the Bordeaux Rose which was very nice.<br/>For my main I chose the lamb with couscous, pomegranate seeds & mint yoghurt. One of the best lamb dishes I have tried (& I've tried a lot!) The lamb was medium & meltingly tender. Rested well so that it was warm & lost minimal juice. The flavour pairing with the rest of the dish also worked well.<br/>I was offered dessert & the selection was small but well rounded. Unfortunately I was full but would definitely try one next time. <br/>A great find & one I will happily visit again.

Nice spot by the river. Super tasty pork chop. Good hangout for drinks with a relaxing atmosphere. Friendly staff. We had some tasty shared nibbles.

The first time me and my partner dined here we shared the tomahawk, the meat was full of fat and lacking of flavour. Being that both of us work in hospitality we didnt want to complain as our waitress was obviously new and a little nervous. That being said we didnt mind paying for it etc and figured maybe it was a one off. A few days ago we thought we'd give the place another go. We both ordered the scotch fillet which again was tasteless and full of fat. I see many people rave about the steak from this place but just wanting to share our opinion of the food. Not a bone to pick with the service

Date night with hubby. We didn't have a reservation and the restaurant was full so we had a drink out on the terrace and were seated before we had even finished our drinks! <br/>The food was superb, steak cooked perfectly and the gnocchi was delicious. <br/><br/>Even though it was obviously very busy, the staff were attentive (especially the manager - Irish guy) and we didn't have to wait long for our food. <br/>Make sure you try the white chocolate expresso martini - it's to die for! <br/>Thank you for a great evening, we will be back and will definitely be recommending you to all our friends.

the service of this place is very very bad. we ordered a beer and it took half an hour for a frigging beer. there were so many waiters but none of them were even looking at anyone and just walking away, safe to say I'm never coming back !

My husband raved about the steak and gnocchi in the grilled chicken dish was awesome. An issue with raw chicken was quickly resolved. Our daughter's meal came out quickly along with a kids pack that kept her entertained. All the male staff were brilliant. We were only served by one female staff member who didn't crack a smile until we left and she wished us an awesome night. Not sure what her issue was, she seemed to be annoyed when we asked to move from inside to a free table outside (before we had even sat down or ordered) which we only did so that the pram wouldn't get in people's way. Besides her, everything else was great.

Good quick lunch steak. Steak was cooked as requested which was great. There’s other options as well with their lunch specials (wagyu burger, I don’t remember them all). It also comes with a drink at $20.

Menu said Aged Porterhouse but what came put was definitely not aged. Also asked for steak done blue but at best it was medium rare. Worst still, I brought friends - there were 9 of us - from overseas and wav raving on about aged steak. Very disappointing !!!

Had the lunch special steak and chips and fish and chips with my wife.Excellent value steak cooked to perfection and fish melt in the mouth delicious all washed down with a glass of wine or beer<br/>20 dollars best value around

Had the waygu burger here and was a little disappointed. Tasted more like a spaghetti bolognese than a nice BBQ burger... Weird sensation/experience for a burger.<br/>Mediocre service at best, as we were tended to a whole two times in two hours.

Came here for a lunch special on a sunny day. Price was very reasonable and live music was playing outside. Pleasant place far from the hustle and bustle of the city, while being so close to the whole thing.

It was a mess from start to finish! Having originally been asked to pre-order due to the size of our group, I was told that you can't preorder lunch. Six emails back and forth found the menu issue resolved but then when I asked to confirm the date they had that wrong also despite the date being in the subject of the email. <br/><br/>When we showed up today, there was no table ready for our group, they then tries to have us order again despite our preorder and also had the number of our group incorrect which serves only to tell me that all my best efforts to organise beforehand went to waste. To top it all off it took almost 50mins and a lot of asking in our behalf to see our mains - bit rich for a 'lunch' menu when most people have an hour for lunch!!<br/><br/>In fairness previous visits with smaller groups have been great - just disappointed they missed the mark with our work group

Came with my girlfriend, and Parents who were visiting form the UK. Seated next to the waiter's station which wasn't ideal, but there wasn't much other choice. The menu had plenty of options. I had the 400g Porterhouse, served Rare. BRILLIANT. Absolutely cooked to perfection (for once). The steak was the size of my forearm, a wonderful slab of meat. Pickled Peppercorn sauce and Yellow carrots on the side complimented wonderfully. My girlfriend and Dad had the Pork Rack, both of which were huge, tender and juicy. Mother had Fish of The Day, Barramundi, also a great portion size, beautifully cooked and full of flavour. The service was alright - nothing to shout home about, but the food was truly brilliant. No Chilli needed... Looking forward to coming back! Highly recommended. Circa $220 for 4 people including a few beers and a couple of glasses of wine.*Good when catering for nut allergies.

Ok for a team lunch. I organised a team lunch at Meat Market last week. It was ok, but nothing to rave about. We had to pre-order the day before because our group was larger than 9 people, but as it turns out, they don't check the pre-orders. One of my team mates had requested a small change to a standard meal, but I received a phone call on the day advising that they weren't able to accommodate the change because the meal had been pre-made that morning. So, in theory, I have no idea why you would need to pre-order the day before.
Burgers Of Melbourne
Order: Wagyu Burger Royale with Chips $24 - This burger was chosen from the ‘Burger Book of Victoria’ written by none other than Jimmy’s Burgers. The Wagyu Burger Royal did look the part when it first came to the table. I wasn’t sure what to do with the pickle on the top, so decided to cut it up and include it in the overall package of the burger. Taste-wise I was expecting more. The place is called ‘Meat Market’ and the meat factor was a bit of a let down. It was better than average, but nothing to rave about.

The steak at Meat Market South Wharf ticked many approval boxes, including presentation, but there was really nothing sparkling about our experience there.
Epicurean Of Southbank
...The open kitchen, clean fit-out, views of the river and the derelict North Wharf (such potential) along with the high ceilings sucked me in like a horny teenager into a sleazy pick-up place, a true Meat Market.
Dan From Melbourne
So how was the steak? In short- fantastic. I ordered mine medium rare with the red wine jus and they nailed it. The meat was still red and juicy, although unfortunately the above photo is a bit too dark to really show this. Considering Melbourne is a bit of a steak town I was genuinely surprised at the quality of the steak.
