The food is always delicious... and it’s BYO and there is a grog shop only meters away
Brilliant service and really delicious foods: the dumplings, buns and duck were so tantalising and tasty! We will definitely be back to experience the deliciousness again!
Thanks Guys!
Really nice food and excellent service, trouble is trying to get in very busy restaurant
Lovely food, staff and venue. Would eat here again.
Great food, great friendly and attentive service. Dishes were very authentic.
Awesome staff rally friendly and amazing food honestly considering going back for dinner 100/100
Great food, very tasty and fresh, we did BYO and that was welcomed too.
Still as great as a ever!
Being coming for 25 years.
Quick service, excellent food - we'll be back, thank you :D
The best restaurant in Melbourne Chinatown ..their food is awesome..with beer and scotch it's recommended to have their chili beef..Tsingtao beer is superb..
I always have a nice Chinese meal when I visit Melbourne. The crane offered Melbourne’s typical high standard Chinese dishes, and for that reason I give this place 4 bears
Food was awesome! Would 100% recommend this Asian kitchen. Try Spicy Chicken Dish. Staff have a hard time interacting with Customers i think.
Located in the middle of china town. The place isn't big but wasn't crampy etiher and was pretty well kept. There's a tablet where you can order from and the staffs were all really nice and professional. I got to use zomato gold here too and there was no fuss at all. Food also took a reasonable time.
My sis had their shanghai stir fried noodles and i had some too. It was delicious, she requested it to be spicy and spicy it was, a bit too spicy for me though my sis enjoyed it. The noodles were really yummy though, really liked the chewy texture. She requested it to be vegetarian so there was tofu and bell peppers, tofu lacked bit of flavour.
Stewed beef brisket was really good too, the flavour was great and the beef was tender, with lots of tendons in there as well, as well as bokchoy. It didn't come with rice so that's an extra $2.8. Portion was also satisfying, lots of meat in there.
Overall, a great place for casual dining as it was tad bit more expensive than some places but great service and food.
( follow for more!✨)

Ordered the classic sweet and sour pork and a mixed stir fry veggies with garlic. I like that both dishes are well balanced in flavour. The restaurant have a large menu & they have an iPad looking device to place orders. I certainly wouldn’t mind coming back to try out other dishes! Just a note if you are spending less than $30, please bring cash, as that’s the min spend to pay with card. Credit card surcharge applies.
We're loving the salted fish and chicken fried rice ❤️ Also the fact that we were given an interactive screen that has a picture for each menu item. Their fried dumplings were also best! The skin was crispy but not hard like some other dumpling places. The filling was tasty and they were of reasonable prices too.
Both of us unprepared, finally decided to walk imto.any random chinese restaurant we came across in China Town on Little Bourke Street before going for a Tom Cashman's Stand-Up comedy show and we ended up at The Crane Restaurant, which apparently is a haven for Seafood lovers.
It was as noisy and busy the chinese restaurants are in China Town but the service was quite quick and smooth. In fact, placing an order is quite easy, and involves a tab.
We chose to order Seafood Flat rice Noodles, Sichuan Seafood Claypot and Prawn Friend Rice other than the usual beers and wines.
The wonderfully cooked and well seasoned SIchuan seafood claypot was most certainly the Dish Of The Day
Absolutely loved the bowl of flavors in the form of Prawn Fried Rice which was another winning dish of the Day.
For someone who likes their food little Bland, the Seafood Flat Rice Noodles with Egg would be just perfect, and also had an overdose of veggies. We asked for a chilly paste and it was perfect for our taste then.
We have always visited this inexpensive and value for money restaurant twice and would mind going again.
The second time we ordered every usual except the Beef Clay Pot and it was again, out of this world.
A Must
We ordered wonton in chilli oil, fried pork dumplings and sweet and sour barramundi with rice.
The sauce of the chilli oil is a little spicy but has a wonderful flavour. The fried pork dumplings were cooked with perfection. The barramundi was cooked well and great value of money.
The presentation of the food is always fairly nice compared to most Chinese restaurants.
I think the only con was the amount of dumplings and wontons.
Came here for the weekend with my friend! It's quick service venue. One of the best Chinese cuisines must say. They have a large menu and pretty much I've tried everything on it. Good value, tasty dumplings, and noodles. Definitely recommend it to all.
Came here for the weekend with my friend, this restaurant had been around for ages and it's quick service venue. Order the pork chop rice in clay pot and sour fish fillet with rice noodle. The soup is slightly a bit spicy for me. And the pork chop is ok. Overall is value for money. Happy to come back again
I went in for a take away last week and the staff were surprisingly friendly. The food we ordered reminded me of the food in Hong Kong. I could taste the breath of the wok. Keep up the good work!

We dined here on a Saturday night and it was great. We had a selection of entrees. Started with the calamari, as we do everywhere it is on the menu and it was very tasty. Just the right amount of salt. Partner ordered the hot and sour soup, first time he has ever had it and he was glad he tried it but wouldn’t have it again. I don’t think that was the restaurant? I just don’t think he enjoyed it enough. I ordered the lettuce cups with pork and it was Devine. So tasty. Then we had some chilli oil dumplings, with just a little more chilli they would have been awesome. Prawn toast was next and it good, nothing special but would eat again. We then finished with Peking duck and it was tasty, not the best I have had but still enjoyable.
I like that we have a iPad to order off when we are ready, we like to eat, drink and order at in our time. We normally don’t know what we want next til we done with what we have just eaten, so this set up is perfect for us and the service is very quick. Staff are friendly and happy to help.

One of the best Chinese cuisines in Chinatown in my list. Love their stone pot collection, fresh ingredients with rich flavours. They offer iPad for ordering food, quite enjoy the experience. Price is quite fair either for a quick lunch or a quality dining experience.
This place is always pack and service is quick. They have a large menu and pretty much ive tried everything on it. Specially recommended the clay pot dishes which is my personal favourite
We were seated upstairs with other lively, large groups. The menu is large, with a lot to choose from and something for everyone. The Szechuan Chilli Pork Chop was absolutely delicious - crispy batter, chilli, flavoursome seasoning and juicy, tender pork. Every dish we tried was yummy! Lovely, attentive service by the staff and overall and nice restaurant.

Great food, you better try the duck, it’s absolutely delicious. Chinese brócoli is absolutely yummy, and you can BYO, which is great, really good service too!
Was delighted to be seated within 14 minutes in Chinatown on Chinese New Year in a Chinese restaurant. My friend kept raving about their iPad menus but after we sat down we were given two leather bound printed menus. He insisted on their iPad and we were provided with an iPad with a barely working touch screen which was low on battery. I prefer the leather bound with large glossy photos. As such I feel like I really couldn't order what I wanted
We had pork chilli wontons drowning in spicy sweet szechuan sauce. By far my favourite dish. I drank the spicy sauce like juice and now am suffering from severe heart burn but so worth it.
The pork bun was nice with a light soft dough but the filling was extremely sweet pork pieces.
The spring onion pancake was good but smaller in size than expected.
The San choy how was the most disappointing. Half a lettuce leaf in a bowl with a spoon of mince chicken. Yes it tasted nice but how is it San choy bow when I have half a bow....
I also had a raspberry lemonade which wad watered down raspberry syrup with soda and some lemon but was refreshing.
Surcharge if you pay by card
No split bill
Would go back to try other dishes
A bustling restaurant in the middle of Chinatown, with the traditional hawker out the front trying to entice you in. Generous servings. Traditional menu with some surprises , pineapple with the satay beef a nice touch.
Food was pretty good, we ordered the pork ribs in mandarin sauce and sizzling mongolian beef. The staff were friendly and interior was clean. Only criticism is that the serving size was not enough considering the price (and in comparison to other similar chinese restaurants)
For an Asian restaurant, The Crane is well above average. Clean, good service, good food. Not super expensive either. Standard Chinese restaurant fare done well.
Even after moving to and from states, the staff were as friendly as ever and even remembered mum and I (as well as our very specific dietary requirements). Always recommend this to interstate friends and family if ever they make their way to Melbourne.
The food I ordered was great. Generous serving size and reasonable prices.
The staff were very friendly and accommodating.
Ordering the food is on a tablet and although I entered my order, the staff still came over to confirm. This made the food delivery time quite slow.
We had great dinner at Crane Restaurant. We had banquet for 2 persons.. 2 options, had the more expensive one. Pretty perfect package! Actually So good that forgot to take pictures LoL...
Food was really tasty and very fresh.. spiced in good taste and balance. Friendly service.
Great for lunch or dinner. Quick service. Can get cramped a little at times. If you're going to lunch, the hotpots are awesome value. Just be careful, as the are extremely-hot pots.
Chinatown random selection. The Dear Luncher very much enjoys taking a punt on a place never tried before and on this occasion it was The Crane. After a lunching mishap that saw The Dear Luncher and his fellow five Lunchers miss out on a pre-booked Mexican Lunch (the venue went into receivership and yet still accepting the online booking, maggots) – a journey to Chinatown was seen as the best solution for a Friday Lunching session with no booking. This was the correct decision. The staff promptly made room for our party of six and presented us with iPads to start selecting food and drink. The menu selection via the iPad is always a winner. Choices galore, almost too many choices. Quite a few pages to scroll through. However it always seems so much more exciting when done electronically so who cares.
Service was fast. Food and drink was delivered promptly and with care. The duck pancakes were made for us while we waited – which was excellent. The highlights were the duck pancakes, as well as the crispy chicken. Get a good look at the picture taken of said crispy chicken – bloody gorgeous. Enough food to feed a small nation was ordered, so Your Dear Luncher is unable to list it all. All in all, it’s nice to add another Chinatown venue to the repertoire. Very satisfying. The Dear Luncher’s entourage ate and drank like lords for under $50 per head.
#Value.
We have been eating at The Crane for 5 years now and l can not rave enough about the food... every time the food is consistently delicious and the service is excellent... we always go back whenever we can..... such a large variety of foods to choose from .. personally the special fried rice and lemon chicken are our favs. Hope you also enjoy your experience there as we have.
The food is good.. ambience good.. but the service is a bit annoying.. we had to ask one of the waiters that served us for water 3 times still no water!
Friendly staff.. delicious food. Manager is hands on everything and looks so concerned that everyone is ok. Thumbs up! Careful dishes are quite big so always good to share here.
Like spicy Szechuan food? You gotta try the Peppercorn Prawn and the Peppercorn Chicken that Crane is well know for. There are tons of wonderful Chinese restaurants here on Little Bourke St - but none like Crane. Comfortable seating downstairs and upstairs. Szechuan cooking with a little serving of steamed rice - and you would not have experienced such fireworks at dinner!
It is in Chinatown. The staff is welcoming and nice. The atmosphere is quite good. They provide iPad to order food. The good thing is very quick, but it's not good for ordering some new dishes. Luckily, the staff helped us to figure out. We ordered hot and spicy chicken, pork intestines in chilly sauce clay pot and sweet sour fish. They all taste good. The proportion of food is quite big. The spicy chicken is really spicy. Pork intestines is fried and then stired. It is yummy. Sweet sour fish is sweet, coz having pineapple and green pepper. The fish is roasted in oven and then add sauce. The fish meat is tender .We also ordered pork chop soup. It tastes great.
So pleased we found this place in Chinatown. Friendly and quick service, delicious food. Loved the (cheap) won tons in chilli sauce (I could drink that sauce and we used it to dip everything else in). Salt & pepper spicy soft shell crab and the baked scallops in butter and peppercorn sauce were also delicious. All had the right amount of chilli for me. The Crane Special fried rice was unique and yummy. You do the ordering yourself on an iPad, which works well. Nice quiet and dark ambience with comfortable seating. The menus look a bit old and tatty though, which does a disservice to the actual food. Reasonably priced. Will definitely return.
Been here numerous times. Staff are always welcoming. The stir fries tend to be a little on the salty side, but taste fine when accompanied with rice. The iPad ordering system is really handy and interesting. Food is always filling. Will continue to dine here.
Perfect service from a small little restaurant here in the middle of Melbourne! The food was really good, service was fast and the staff were friendlier than any Chinese restaurant I've been to! Must try the shredded duck and dried scallop soup.. The Chilli game Hen if you're up for spice and also the black pepper and pickles barramundi.. 😍 too busy eating forgot to take pictures!
Nice place with nice people, you can order whatever you want using the iPad, food comes up very quick.
Suggest for people around CBD area...
The Crane - a good Chinatown restaurant where you hit up a banquet, sample a variety of dishes (entrees, mains, desserts) with BYO wine. A pork dish, a prawn dish, spring rolls and satay sticks - not to mention the banana fritter with icecream.
The service is also pretty good, and their iPad means of ordering is nifty.
All in all, I'm not saying this is the greatest Chinese food in the area, but for value I'm a fan and a repeat customer - particularly if you want to settle in for a late night meal over the course of a couple of hours.
Amazingly fast service. Friendly staff. Order on iPad . Very efficient. Mandarin pork and BBQ pork buns were amazing!!! Would probably pass on the crispy skin chicken next time but everything was great apart from that!
Really good mains, loved the beef in black bean. Also noticed multiple meals being brought out smelling and looking fantastic. The dumplings and wontons are just average which was disappointing. You order off of an iPad which is a great idea at minimalising the language barrier, however make sure to use it as the only thing not ordered on the iPad they messed up. Lovely, kind service, would recommend!
What a lovely find! Located in Chinatown, this restaurant serves up heaps of special lunch deals. The wait staff are lovely and accommodating, and the touch pad for ordering was fun to play with! I tried the clay pot chicken with rice, which wasn't spectacular but yummy nonetheless with heaps of meat and multi-grain rice. You can get an entire fried fish too for around $12 for lunch!
Great portions, great value.
Will definitely be back again as I'm interested to try out the other myriad of options available at The Crane. Recommend (Y)
Food was great! A bit more pricy for China town but service was better than others! Would defiantly come here again! Looking forward to trying something new on the menu next time
The Crane is a unassuming little Chinese restaurant off Little Bourke Street. Like most restaurants on the Chinatown strip, it has a number of budget lunch specials between $8-$12, mostly of the spicy Sichuan variety. I was not however expecting something very rare in most restaurants like these which is.. GOOD SERVICE. Instead of the usual scowls and brusque mannerisms, from the start, the waitstaff were well-spoken and helpful in helping me navigate the computerized ordering process (via tablets), promptly taking my orders and attending to special requests such as extra utensils and takeaway containers. Now, to the food. I ordered the spicy fish in chilli with rice ($10.80) and was impressed by its huge size; a large bowl of fish fillets in a spicy broth bristling with bean sprouts, chilli and Sichuan peppers. The broth was tasty and had a smokiness to it which I enjoyed. It was way too big (probably enough for 2-3) so I ordered a takeaway container which the kitchen offered to pack up and seal properly so it wouldn't spill (again, above the call of duty as you usually have to do it yourself). For its price, size and quality of servings and surprisingly good service, The Crane is definitely a goer.
Drop in by chance for dinner after the races. Loved the chilli chicken (very spicy!). Dumplings great. Staff helpful when approached and very friendly with the kids. Nice casual dinner

The food and staff are cheerful and generous, Be ready to make the first move though as the service may just seem a little abrupt. Dumplings are delicious and nicely priced; grab a cheap bottle of vino, 6 friends and make yourself at home
We love this place and keep coming back. Spicy, tasty, authentic Asian food at a reasonable price. In saying that, there is something for everyone. Customer service is quick. Drinks menu is very reasonably priced. Actually it is cheap! We will be back. One of our favourites 😊
Randomly walked into this place because of the appetizing photos on their window. We ordered the mixed stone-pot that I don't recommend for everyone because its extremely in tears spicy but very YUM, so I now have a love hate relationship with it . Great portions and great staff and I find the menu very interesting only if there was a way to decrease the amount of oil in their cooking it could have been a 5!
Not for the technically challenged - well at least when ordering.
My annual girlie weekend in Melbourne is never complete without a visit to Chinatown for some good chinese. Every year we try to go somewhere we haven't been before, not hard with the variety of restaurants on offer. This year it was The Crane - looking inside from the cold it looked warm, inviting and definately busy - this means it has to be good right? Not always, but in this case, yes it was.
Upon on entering I wasn't sure there was a spare table, but we were soon seated (almost on top of the next table - so make sure you like a bit of closeness with strangers) and the ipad ordering system explained. This was a first for me - and I felt really rather techno-in-touch at how easy I managed to navigate this (I can be a complete techno idiot at times). Not so much the table next to us - they struggled.
My dining companion isn't one for overly spicy dishes, so I had to give the szechuan a miss (I love szechuan too - next time) and we ordered the fairly standard king prawns with cashews, salt and pepper calamari and fried rice. All dishes were on the table in about 5 minutes flat (even before the wine) and all were delicious. There was a generous amount of king prawns, cashews galore, the calamari was nicely salt and peppery and we thoroughly enjoyed each bite.
I will definately be back with the hubby when we make the move south next year - there is a lot of szechuan on that menu that I need to try.
Great spot for lunch..... We stumbled upon this small restaurant in Chinatown, serving mainland Chinese cuisine, fast service, good lunch options, and good prices.......I can recommend the spicy chicken!
One of my favorites. Love this place. The iPad ordering is fun and makes me feel like I can take my time without any pressure. I'm a vego and they're always happy to make a meat free version of their dishes for me. Service is very fast and the food is good. Pretty cheap too!
Food was good, fairly well priced. Clever iPad ordering system.
Fantastic food- terrible iPad ordering system. The best pork belly I've ever eaten, best pork buns! Every dish was a winner! The food came out quickly however... The ordering system with the iPad that crashed continually and was actually quite dirty was very unimpressive. Thankfully the food more than made up for it. Perhaps it will be easier next time knowing how the menu system works.
Liked it. Would have been nice to get a smile from one of the staff, but otherwise great food, incredibly quick service, great atmosphere, iPads are a fun addition ( although they discourage communication between diners and staff), reasonable prices. Overall great mid week experience (went there Tuesday night)

Great menu and great food. Ordering with provided iPad means you never have to wait to catch the waiter's eye. I like the atmosphere, bluestone walls, mood lighting and cozy booths. 9/10
Great food, friendly service and well priced! Everything was flavoured very well and good portion sizes.
Plus the added quirk of ordering your food from an iPad at your table!
Cracking little place. This is actually a really good little Chinese. Ordering through a tablet feels very fancy and new age, and when the food comes out, its exactly what you hope it will be. The dumplings are amazing (particularly the chilli). its best to order a few things at a time and not all at once, otherwise you'll be out the door in half an hour. The staff are overly keen to clear the table and get you out the door, but apart from that, you cant argue with this place. BYO as well. its my "go to" in china town.
Wow!. I believe Crane serves the best Crispy Skin Duck on the planet. And the Honey Scallops (or chicken) - 'to die for'. I enjoy using the iPad ordering system as things arrive promptly at the table as diners require them. This is my go-to eatery when in the vibrant city of Melbourne.
Great food for a good price.
Service was acceptable, food was out pretty quick also.
Soup dumplings = For the win!!
Was looking for Kun Ming, as both are listed at the same address, but found this place instead. We gave it a go, and weren't disappointed. The electronic quick order menu, the service, and the food were all great. For what it is, we had no complaints and would definitely come back again.
Love it, never had a bad meal and been going for years. Love the iPad ordering and love the chilli beef. Hot sizzling plates great too.
This restaurant was exceptional. Friendly service, innovative digital ordering, delicious food! They were more than happy to accommodate our large party at the last minute. Would highly recommend this place for their amazing dumplings!
Good mid range Chinese place. Dropped in on a whim. Seafood dish I had was very nice. Fresh, tasty and piping hot. Plenty of seafood. Service was pleasant, brisk and efficient. This place has an unusual but very efficient iPad ordering system. I enjoyed the meal and would happily return.
I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and the Mongolian beef was spot on, the service was terrific and the iPads were a great way to order. Our meals came quickly and everything was how we wanted them. However the ambiance wasn't the best as if felt a bit cafe like rather than a restaurant. Overall a nice experience would come back again and would bring back friends

Excellent Experience. I've diner here two times now and on both occasions my experience was better than I expected. The innovative use of iPad ordering menus works well for me because it categorizes the food and makes finding what you want faster without flipping through fat menus. Viewing the bill on the iPad also proves great, as I don't need to manually try workout everything I ordered costed. Not only does the bill summary on the iPad show what you ordered and the costs, but also the status of the dish in its preparation to your table. From my two experiences, the statuses are accurate, so this really doesn't feel gimmicky at all, but rather a utilitarian approach to making dining experiences easier and fun. The food on it self was authentic, generously sized, full of robust flavour all at very respectable prices given the food quality. On my second experience I ordered chili beef with rice in clay pot. I thought I was priced at about $12.60 so I presumed I wouldn't get much so I ordered two entrees to go along with water. I usually finish my foods even if there's a lot, but I couldn't manage to finish the clay pot, despite me desperately wanting to because of the flavour hit. So I can't recommend the food enough. The decor of the restaurant may trick someone into thinking your paying $35+ per main; wrong sir. Decor is authentic and tables and chairs located conveniently so there isn't issues getting in or out unlike many other Asian restaurants I've dined in. Overall this restaurant will make for a great opportunity to take your partner out, friends and or family. This place definitely deserves more recognition. Don't trust my word - try it out for yourself.
Yummy in my Tummy. It's hard to choose a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown but we were not disappointed. It was very fun to order from tablets and we loved the Vegetarian food (dumplings, eggplant and beans, baoze, and stirfry). My partner had the coconut and mango drink and loved it.
Yum! Rocked up 12 minutes before kitchen closed. Ordered sizzling lamb, spring rolls, spicy calamari and the freshest tastiest pork buns ever!! Great food! Friendly staff. Unplanned dinner but we will definatly be back! Really clean to which is hard to find in Chinatown.
Omg! So glad we choose this place amazing food great service we'll be back! Couldn't fault anything!
One word - > fantastic Mor.... One word - > fantastic
More than one word - > very cool ordering system, lots and lots of verifies, and for the very reasonable price relatively good service.
Excellent service I love everyone and would definitely come again :-)
Pure unadulterated deliciousness!

@thecrane_melb, Chinatown 📍Never noticed this little chinese restaurant previously so was very excited to check it out! It’s a two storey gem. Their menu is on a digital iPad and they have so much yummy chinese food on offer! 🇨🇳
Signature hot & spicy Sichuan chinese fried chicken 🔥 and the green beans with spicy chicken were my top picks!! 😻 we also ordered XLB, and quite a feast of dumplings !
Been craving for Mandarin Pork Spareribs which is the closest thing to the US America's General Tso and exceeded my expectations. Had XO seafood fried rice, prawn dumpling and veggies - all very delicious. Worth the queue
This restaurant is located in the heart of Chinatown in Melbourne. The service is welcoming and friendly.
The menu is extensive, with a good selection of dishes.
I tried the
- Pork Dumplings
- Fried wontons
- Cantonese Roasted Duck
- Diced Chicken w peanuts in Szechwan Chilli Sauce.
The dumplings were light and tasty, with some good flavour. The roasted duck was moorish, the skin crispy and the meat had a soy flavour.
The fried wontons were great, and still a little juicy in the middle.
The diced chicken was yummy, I really enjoyed the spice, and the peanuts worked well.
The addition of some Japanese beers was a winner.
Thanks for the invite.
We arrived with 8 people, they were very busy and we thought we would get turned away but no, just wait 5 minutes, they moved tables and people (thanks to those who moved) and then we were seated. 15 mins later we were eating fantastic food. Thanks very much for accommodating us and your quick service. Food was so yummy I forgot to take photos at the start.
great little spot for all your dumplings and noodle goods!
found in Melb's China Town (and conveniently located towards Swanston St end). they have such a big menu and everything i got did not disappoint!
service is super quick! loved it! u also order off their tablet - gotta love ordering with pics hehe
XLBs are always a must for me hehehe - but u def needa check out their chilli chicken! (dw folks. its not THAT spicy.. its more a low-medium spice but is full of flavour!! one of my favs!)
they serve up HK Milk Teas and a few other fun sodas, and they are also certified to serve alcohol and they have plenty to choose from too!
great spot for casual catch ups with mates over dumplings!
Great portions. All came out steaming hot. Great flavours friendly staff.
My favorite restaurant in Chinatown, great service and reasonable price, especially the lunch special sets.
Have been a regular customers over 5yrs, the delicious food make me miss my hometown. Strongly recommend to those love Chinese cuisine.
Loved this restaurant last night. The food was fresh and super tasty. Strongky recommend the pork buns and dumplings. Self-ordering through the ipad makes food service pretty quick. Although, being a super busy restaurant, you must allow for some patience.
Excellent atmosphere. The staff were friendly and helpful.
