All the stars are for the ricotta gelato, the most gorgeous flavour I've eaten. Great place to drop in after dinner for a yummy gelato šš¼ Only trouble is they don't take EFTPOS
One of my absolute favourite places to grab some gelato, Casa Del Gelato has the most delicious range of flavours and the creamiest gelato around. The flavours are more traditional, but they are exceptional quality and very authentic, and not artificial at all.
The store itself is quite retro, and is very comfortable with a relaxed atmosphere. The staff are so sweet, and happy to offer suggestions. We tried an eggnog gelato and also passion fruit. They were both completely opposite as far as flavours go, but the combination worked really well. The passion fruit is the best version of this flavour that I have ever had, and the eggnog tasted nice and boozy. With a plethora of gelato shops on Lygon Street, Casa Del Gelato stands out for it's traditional style and amazing flavours.
It was a really hot day when we went--perfect gelato weather! This is a small little sop just next to 7-11. The shop's really nice, with a bright and playful feel to it. The aircon was so cool (so important on a hot day! hehe).
We got a mix of watermelon, caramel, and ricotta gelato. The ricotta was AMAZING, but we weren't quite fond of the watermelon flavor. This is definitely a great place to go to for some Italian gelato on Lygon St.
One of the few traditional gelato places around with so many vegan flavours. But that's not the only perk - all the vegan options are refined sugar free (sweetened with fructose) AND the serves are massive. For just $7, you can get a large "single scoop" which includes up to three flavours. Pistachio, bacio and cookie is a great combo.
I swear this place has been open since the dawn of time.Ā
There are a lot of flavours. I got a small which is 3 flavours for $6. Great dairy free options and honestly I couldn't really tell the difference. Sure it's not 'hip or trendy' but it sure will satisfy. If you can't find a flavour that you'll enjoy then stay home. An institution that must be protected at all costs. I hope this place stays open forever.
One of the best ice-cream places I have been to!! Its popularity was evident as their was a long line and the place was full. The flavour choice is like no other as they have many authentic flavour combos that sounds delicious. They also have great prices as you can get a cone with 3 flavours for $6 which is totally worth it.
I can't honestly say how many times I've been here... a lot! They serve gelato and ice cream in cups, cones and waffle cones and take away containers too. There are so many flavours to choose from and you will find one that suits your mood. I love my amerena (sour cherry) and chocolate, it's my go to on a warm night. I have never had a bad ice cream served to me although the services can be a little cold at times, but the queues can be long and the customers slow to make their selections. Give the shop a try, the calories will love you!
Loooove the vegan choc hazelnut and pistachio gelato here. Also like that they're sugar free. They have a good amount of flavours but would always love to see more haha. I wanted to try the cookies n cream but they use oreos which contain palm oil which to me isn't vegan, I wish they made their own cookie for it instead.
This gelato store is a local gem. I always come back for the ricotta cheese gelato which does not sound as gross as it sounds. I always get the usual cringe but when my friends try it they fall in love. Only downfall is that the ice cream melts so easily!! So be quick to lick it all up
A nice little gelato join along Lygon St. Great selection of gelato flavours, including fruits, nuts and your chocolate mixes. Lychee is a must try!Ā
Note that they only take cash, and it might be a bit pricier than others, but the great flavours make it worthwhile
I have been going to Casa Del Gelato since I was a little girl.
They have the best gelato on Lygon Street by far. Their gelatos are icy rather than creamy, just the way I like it. Their prices are also far more reasonable than other gelato places along the Lygon Street strip.
My all-time favourite flavour is their coconut gelato. I would buy it by the bucket-load if I could.
Just a heads up that this place is cash only as there are no EFTPOS facilities on site. If you bank with Commonwealth Bank, however, there is a conveniently located Bank West ATM in 7Eleven next door that does not charge a fee for withdrawal.
Best icecream on Lygon in my opinion, and I've tried pretty much all of the places on Lygon! They pop a really cute heart-shaped biscuit into your cone, making it really aesthetic. However, they only take cash, so make sure to bring some along! Prices are extremely reasonable. You can even go to Argyle Square and have a cute picnic with friends!!
We have been coming here on and off for the past 20 years and it never disappoints! Our fave flavours include watermelon (with tiny bits of real watermelon!), coffee and Ferraro Rocher. Too bad they close during winter though. Here's to another 20 years of great gelato at Casa Del Gelato!
Not as quite good as piccolina but still good. Staff are friendly and there are a good variety of flavours. One of my favourites being the vanilla.
Popped into Case del gelato last night as it was my mums birthday and itās her favourite gelato store. We have probably been coming here for 20 years and in summer thereās lines out the door. A family run business, the son of the original owner has now taken over keeping the secret recipes in house.
Itās a Lygon street icon and a very traditional gelato store in contrast to the recent proliferation of Messina and Pidapipo flooding the market with their deliciousness. Fruity flavours are the heartland and I recommend peach and mango. Choc mint and cookie crumble are also tasty if you want more of an ice cream. The ingredients are high quality even if your options arenāt as fancy as what you find at the new kids on the block. Tried and true authenticity
Yum yum yum. Bought a small $6 cup which consisted of rum & raisin, chocolate chip & passion fruit. Seemed to be very popular and definitely had a larger range than other gelato places nearby.
My favorite gelato on Lygon. Their fruit flavor is the best! The grapefruit, green apple, and wild berry are on my top 3 list. Regular flavor like chocolate and vanilla are good as well.
This place is great! There are so many vegan options and sooooo delicious! It's so nice to see a gelateria that has so many options for vegans and not just fruit flavours! I had pistachio, bacio and I can't remeber the third.
A WINNNER! The fruit flavours here are a definite go (particularly any of the citrus based flavours). But if you are a classic person (you know, the vanilla, the chocolate, the caramel) you won't be let down either. Most combinations are good and the staff will let you sample generous portions of numerous flavours to see if that's what you are after.Ā
They may even recommend you a flavour combination if you ask nicely.Ā
The service is outstanding even on a busy summer night.
Can seat yourself indoors but I would recommend taking it to one of the nearby parks and eating. Best shared with friends.
Such a good place for vegan ice cream, they have a nice variety of soy options. My favourite are the chocolate and chocolate bacio. Can't speak for the dairy options but they're apparently great too š
The most delicious Gelato that l've tasted in a long while? Over 50 different flavors to choose from, great service and price is good for what you get.
We tried a few different nut varieties and while the nuts were distinguishable the base icecream was virtually indistinguishable, We went here because didn't want to wait in line at the gelato shop up the street. but next time we'll probably wait in line, didn't like the flavors as well.
Worst of all the Medium cup looks big but it's a mirage because on the inside the floor is about 1/4th of the way up the height of the cup, very sneaky way to cut on ice cream quantity.
This is my favourite best gelato shop. Variety of flavours to choose from and soya flavours are also good. Real Italian gelato at Lygon Street.
I don't have a sweet tooth, but strolling down Lygon St we felt in a holiday mood so popped into Casa Del Gelato for a look.
As soon as I saw chilli choc on the menu I was smitten.
We had a small tub each but neither of us could finish them. The chilli choc had a really good kick to it and I'm glad I went for a tub as it melted really quickly. The coconut was gorgeous too, a nice cool down after the chilli hit.
I can't really comment on the price as I'm not a regular gelato buyer, but $6 seemed reasonable to me!
We love Casa Del Gelato! The gelato is traditional, homemade, Italian ice cream. All the flavours are made fresh every morning and you can truly taste it. The gelato is so creamy and the flavours are so delicious and natural. The staff are very friendly, and they let you try all the flavours and give you free little scoops sometimes.
TIP: Do try the Bacio Bianco & Cinnamon- they are our all time favourites- so creamy and delicious.
The service provided here was good, the serving sizes were generous, but I felt that the gelato was too sweet for my liking. It got a bit cloying towards the end.
We visited Casa Del Gelato, because it happened to be the only gelato place near where we were that was open late. And we were not disappointed - the store is large, and this space is not wasted, with a very large variety of flavours on offer. Friendly service and good, authentic gelato.
It is surprisingly cheap and the quality is surprisingly good!!! I've got chocolate and lychee. The chocolate one has a very thick and pure chocolate flavour, not too sweet and it's more like chocolate brownie flavour haha. I rarely see a lychee one so I ordered this flavour as a try... I'm not disappointed! The lychee one is really good and it did really contain lychee flesh! I think here will be my favourite ice cream place for a really long time;)
This gelato shop is a stand alone outlet with a plain facade. No bells and whistles here, it is instead a genuine and charming spot for authentic and delightful ice cream. I was introduced to it with the statement, āchocolate here is one of the best chocolate flavoured ice cream there isā. ...

Before ice-cream/gelato was the bees knees in Melbourne. We had Casa Del Gelato. One of the original and still one of the best to get gelato. Still has the best ricotta gelato.
Really neat spot and delicious gelati, not a huge fan of ice cream and that in general but did enjoy these scoops! Decent price and really generous with the amount of ice cream
This place has been here a long time ago. The place used to be twice the current size. There are all sort of flavours that you can try out. Slightly more expensive than other, but their flavours are great.
Italian Classic and the legend continues ....Is there anyone who likes Gelato that never been here? For years, more than 30 yearsĀ and counting we've been coming here. Not too much flair, just classic Italian Gelato goodness.Always satisfied.
Ricotta Gelato is really good, I thought it'd be some weird cheese taste but it was just super creamy gelato ! try itĀ Also had the cookie crumble and peppermint flavours which were not bad. you get 3 scoops in a cup which is huge
Brilliant and authentic gelato. They've been there for years and for good reason! It's so cheap too. Quick service. I enjoy the real flavours of their Nutella and Cinnamon gelato. I also would recommend the Forest Fruits flavour. Don't go to other fabrications, this place is the real deal for Italian Gelato in Carlton area.
Number one gelato shop on Lygon. Probably number one in Australia. This place has been here for a long time for a reason. Good quality gelato. Prices are a little more expensive than other places but definitely worth it.
Very authentic italian gelato!!Ā
Seriously they have the most favour gelato along lygon st!Ā
My favorite favour was choc mint and hazelnut!!Ā
Very delicious! Cant wait to go back for more!
Always impressive ice cream and gelati. Texture and flavours worth coming back time and time again. There are a number of good ice cream stores around such as Messina. This is pretty much on par with Messina and probably better than the others. The number of flavours is another reason to come.
Today was chilli chocolate and orange for me. Wow the chilli packs a punch which is great!
The vegan gelato is amazing. Had the hazelnut chocolate one and it was so creamy and full of flavour. Only vegan gelato that I have come across that tastes as good as its dairy counterparts.
When going to Lygon street I ensure I stop by this place. For as long as I can remember this place has been here. Whilst the the gelato may be presented in the old style metal buckets behind the counters, if it's that good who really cares!!!!
One complaint though. What happened to my coffee ice cream today? Today's batch was not as good as usual. I hope it was a one off as no one does it like them except Messina.
Great value for money - you get such a huge serving of gelato for $6. Service is lovely, and there's such a huge variety of flavours that you'll be returning time and time again. No wonder it's a Lygon Street institution!
There's a reason why its been open for many, many years :)Ā The only place in Carlton where I have have bought my gelati since the 80s. The best
I met Mum & my godmother Libby in Lygon Street for the best ice cream in all of Melbourne, at Casa del Gelato....
... I had never thought it would work out, but it did. A must try!
Delicious. The best gelati in Victoria. We come here twice a month from a while away just for the gelati. Love it
Yum! Cinnamon & Fig Gelato. I had cinnamon, and caramalised fid gelato, they were so yum!!!
The shop has lots of different interesting flavour, so hard to choose!!!
Love it....With some 24 sorbets and soy ice cream,(6 awesome soy flavours), very vegan friendly!! it's the most I've counted yet!!! Service is friendly, and prices r reasonably cheaper than other places. though can get packed on warm nights, it's worth the wait!!!
Great value and taste. For me, this is definitely the benchmark for all ice creameries/gelato bars to meet. They are well priced and the gelato is simply beautiful. I am a chocolate man so I highly recommend all of their chocolate falvours (eg, traditional, jamaican, choc orange). Will always drop by when in the area.
Nice choices for a good price. There's an ice cream shop where I used to live in Vancouver, Canada named La Casa Gelato that has more than 200 flavours on offer. Odd things such as balsamic vinegar, bleu cheese/pear and not one, but TWO tubs of durian, all the time, not just occasionally like Dolce Freddo up the street from here. That name is what I had in mind when I popped into this Casa Del Gelato for a quick cone on a warm December night. This Casa isn't as over-the-top as the Canadian one -- I don't know if any other place on Earth is -- but it's got a good roster of flavours. It's hella-popular, with a scrum in front of the counter instead of queues, but the quick-handed staff seemed to handle it well.
I had a caramelised fig and bacio "single" cone for $5. I could have combined THREE flavours -- how nice of Casa del Gelato for allowing extra options for that price! -- but I didn't want to make it too complicated. The fig portion was too subtle with its flavour and a softer/meltier than I like with gelato. The bacio was fine, dense, flavourful in a Nutellish way, fragments of hazelnut studded throughout. It was a great thing to have while standing on the side of Lygon watching the hoons roar up and down the street.
User reviews. Plain looking gelato place although plenty of flavours the noicolla and nutella flavour was beautiful just like the gelato i was enjoying in italy! i reccomend this place!
Just amazing. And they have lactose free options :)
An overflowing "single" scoop of Baci, pistachio & hazelnut in a waffle cone was a perfect dessert after dinner on Lygon St. Highly recommended for both quality & quantity - perfecto!
Service was quick even with a steady stream of customers dropping in for a cool treat.
Soya bacio was amazing! So exciting to have vegan ice cream in different flavours to just vanilla and chocolate
Too good. Every gelato flavour I've tried here is amazing! Most are spot-on in terms of their description. I'm convinced it's the best gelato in Melbourne!
RICOTTA. Don't think, just go.
Who would have thought... Ricotta flavoured ice cream tops my list!
Save urself the time and effort and just go direct to here for ur gelato needs. Has no peer.
BEST GELATO IN MELBOURNE. This place most definitely has the best, closest tasting Gelato to Italy in Melbourne. Always has!
Just go here!. 3 scoops of ice cream for $5.... that is just insane! There are so many choices of ice cream here, you won't be surprised if you find yourself all squirmish with excitement. I've been here on a hot day in melbourne, and a cold day in melbourne... and both times... it was perfect weather for ice cream.
There are some different flavours, ricotta, liqourice, eggnog and they have a selection of soy ice creams too. I would reccomend any of the flavours because really, ice cream is only dissapointing when its bought in a tub at your local supermarket. This is the real stuff and you won't stop eating it even if your full! its just too good!!!
So many choices. You are spoilt for choice. i even stay away sometimes because after getting down to a shortlist of about 10-12 of what i find most enticing, i have a breakdown trying to pick and one can only eat so much gelato at a time. definitely go if you like more options than your standard chain will offer. the staff have always been very friendly, attentive and happy to help you pick
Best gelato on lygon, and allows 3 flavours in a single! Loves the jasmine, chestnut and peach flavours!
Gelato delight. After reading about this Gelati shop in the weekend paper we decided to try. The 30 flavours are sure to meet everyones taste. My wife chose chocolate, peach and coconut. The peach in particular was very peachy and great combo with choc. I went for the classic flavour combo of choc, vanilla and pistacchio. Great flavours although too many pistacchio nuts for my liking. Much better than chain brands but still along way from the authentic cones in Italy.
It's busy because it's good.. By the time we got here the crowd was six deep and the three people behind the counter (one of which was the owner) were going flat out. It's worth the wait though - great gelato. So many different flavours, all fresh and big serves.

Lygon street Carlton. The place to eat, greet and enjoy beautiful gelato. The flavours change regularly. Fresh, no ice burn and they cater for every age. Take home packs and birthday cakes available, they gave the cutest children's cups that are re-usable. Not just a "Summer's treat".
The BEST dairy free gelato ā¦ EVER!! Generous serving sizes and DELICIOUS flavours!
Good quality gelato.
I had
Chocolate : basic and delicious
Eggnog: unique but my favourite
Passionfruit: cuts through the flavour and had a good amount of passionfruit seeds.
I also tasted
Custard: also a new favourite
Jasmine: too fragrant I wouldn't recommend
Soy chocolate : good but not as good as the traditional dairy chocolate
Overall a good experience and would go again.
Remember the scene in Ratatouille, where the reviewer bites into the meal and is transported back into his childhood?
That was me. I took one taste of the ākissā flavour, and suddenly I was 7 again, enjoying dunkaroos on the school playground.
Iāll be back here again.
Lots of variety to suit different people and their taste buds! Although the gelatos itself is okay especially when you compare it to other Melbourne institutions. I would give a 3.5 out of 5.
Fantastic - without a doubt, the BEST gelato in Australia... so many amazing flavours. So inexpensive!
Staff are fantastic, too - always welcoming.
Great range of flavours, great value, delicious gelato. Staff was sweet too. No complaints
