Great hospitality! Amazing healthy meal!
there was an undisclosed 2.5% surcharge for zomato gold members (pretty sure this isn't the norm at other places seeing as i've dined using gold and had no surcharges related to using the app). service was ok- not amazing, but not terrible either. aside from that, food was great, but my friend had the pork katsu curry and said it was a little bit salty. i ordered the korean cold noodles with charshu, noodles were nice but the charshu was tough. mandu soup was really nice, as was the seafood jeon. all in all, nice food, but probably won't go back.
Welcoming staff and delicious flavours make this byo restaurant worth a visit. Out of the main city hub, situated near the Aquarium, it has charming decor and cheap-eat prices. Stand outs are the sizzling chilli chicken, lotus root chips, deep fried tofu and the Japanese pancake. But I don’t think you could go wrong with any of the choices from the extensive menu that also includes noodles, sashimi and Korean bbq.
Have a lot of vegetarian options , excellent food.
Very good service, clean and the portion is generous. The chicken yaki udon is very nice. Will visit more often to try other dishes in the future.
Great mix of Japanese and Korean food. Service was very friendly and food was really nice. Been here twice now and Will be back again for sure!
Delicious food, great for the start of our girls night out! Thanks for a yummy dinner! All dishes were as described and everyone commented on how much they enjoyed their meals.
🥓 ORDERED MENU 🍳
Unagi Teppanyaki, and the Grilled Spicy Salmon.
🙆 WHAT WENT WELL 🥰
✓ Food: Always came back for one thing: the Unagi Teppanyaki. Sauce isn't the best I've had, but it's very fatty and enjoyable. On the oily side.
✓ Service: Don't expect too much, standard for an Asian shop. Pleasant enough.
✓ Value for money: I came with Eatclub, 30% off. For the prices they are charging on normal, definitely on the pricier side. However, probably one of the cheapest, decent Japanese fusion with the promo.
🙅 WHAT DIDN'T GO SO WELL 😬
× Food: My sister ordered the Grilled Spicy Salmon. Not quite clear on the picture, but the portion was disappointing. Three pieces of meat, and the rest was filled with vegetables. Taste was quite decent, marinated with Gochujang.
🌺 FINAL THOUGHTS ☘️
Definitely a good deal with Eatclub! Always leave the restaurant satisfied from our money's worth. Would be hesitant to come back without the promo, since their food is not the most memorable.
Tried the korean beef teppanyaki, taste very very very delicious!!!! The okonomiyaki from the bento was lit! The side dish for the teppanyaki were very fresh and tasty. Staffs were very polite and friendly. I will definitely come again👍
Doesn't look like much but this Korean Japanese fusion spot is actually pretty good. They do barbecue as well as other dishes at a reasonable price, with lots of veggie options. I tried a bento box which featuring a diverse range of ingredients including mini veg okonomiyakis. Everything was fried but only lightly so and flavours were all there. If you're on that side of town and need a cheap bite, this spot is probably one of your best bets.
Thank you so much to the waiter here who was so accommodating and really went the extra mile to cater for my diet. What I asked for was definitely unconventional but what I couldn't eat was substituted with things I could. The entire meal was delicious and the service was excellent.
Visited multiple times over past 5 years, food is wonderful especially the salmon dishes, the owner super lovely, layout is pleasant and you can choose to have bbq at your table or off the menu which we always choose. What more is there to want? Excellent.
A cosy place with an expansive menu full of both Korean and Japanese food - we couldn't decide what to get! I had the Seafood Yaki Udon (only $13 for some tasty fried udon noodle with SEAFOOD) and my friend went for the Teriyaki Chicken Bento ($12 for rice, tempura, tebasaki chicken and miso soup). As a person who usually prefers udon in soup, I was pleasantly surprised by its similarity to stir fry noodles and was pleased by the amount of seafood. This place was definitely value for money, especially for dinner!
This place is next to my work, so we go here atlest once a week. I have tasted almost everthing on the menu....so i can say nothing tastes bad here. I love beef tapenyaki, katsu curry( they can make it extra hot too!!) Kimchi soup with rice/ ramen/ udon its excellent.
This place is pretty eclectic. You can have a sit down meal or take away some very enticing looking sushi. Plenty of Korean and Japanese food options. There are a couple tables that allow for Korean BBQ too. I real Jack of all Trades type Japorean operation. Sampled were the pork gyoza and the chicken karaage salad. Also a Cass beer for a lunch special bargain price of $5.50. The salad was a tad strange with olives and carrot in it. Also the fried chicken batter just needs a little bit or work – far too thick. There is a fine balance between deep fried chicken and a really lightly fried Japanese karaage style. Some places seem to get that balance a little off unfortunately. The pork gyoza, fairly flavoursome. Plenty of reasons to want to make a return to Tokyo Maki, that’s for truth.
Right place right price right people. Sushi, hot food, noodle and special menu. Hi chair available.
Easy parking. Thank you tokyomaki.
Staffs are kind enough.
A good lunch for this day
Beef tataki is very good.I like this restaurant very well.and squid salad is delicious. I like Sushi and sashimi very well.
Good for a quick bite. The teriyaki don was okay, nothing to write home about. The service was good but there is a minimum payment on the card so I had to pay a small fee. The lady checked about my egg allergy which was nice though and the place seemed quite busy. My food came super quick which was perfect as I was in a rush.
Great service, attentive and quick to deliver. The bento box with teriyaki chicken was lovely and tender (no fat) and other goodies included a fried chicken wing, lovely soft rice, salad and some tempura (not my fav).
The octopus balls were Devine! But too much sauce but I'm just being fussy ;)
Place was really great! Nice atmosphere. Waitress was really helpful in my selection as I can't have anything too spicy. Had the katsu don ramen. Very cheap! Only issue was I couldn't finish it all because the serving was so nice and big. Won't order entree next time because I couldn't finish it all. Tasted lovely! Will come again!
Their sashimi don was pretty good, nice warm rice for a rainy day. The flying fish roe was served still frozen, didn't really love that but overall the food was fine. Service was alright too. Loved their green tea latte, one of the best lattes I've had in Melbourne.

After a long trek from Flinders Street train station I visited Tokyo Maki for lunch today and chose their Mixed Sashimi Set (salmon, tuna & white fish) for $20 and I wasn't disappointed, it was nicely presented, was very fresh and tasted great. Service provision was very good, the décor was truly impressive & the background music was at a sensible level.
The Juror's Verdict: Food 5/5, Service Provision 3.5/5, Will I return: Yes, to try one of their teppanyaki dishes.

The Swine has been enjoying Bento Box feeds at Tokyo Maki for a long time. The spicy octopus bento is a Swine fave. Miso Soup here also goes really well, as does the complimentary wee tea (as called by a number of regulars). Tokyo Baki has a great range on its menu but the Swine keeps going back to the Bentos as the stand out! Ramen here is another decent consideration. Located at the Spencer Street end of Flinders Street this place is a little out of the way but well worth taking a chance on if you crave Japanese. Nice.
Overall a nice place to grab some dinner, its a casual dinning. Nice Japanese place to grab some quick dinner in city cbd. We tried there seafood items which were nice.
Prepares authentic Japanese. We come here for the katsudon and the udon noodles. Nicely located close to Melbourne Aquarium if you're down that way.
This place has recently undergone a change in management and is now named Komegashi. The food is primarily Korean in taste, you can't really call it Japanese, but the prices are okay and portions are quite big. We ordered a mixed bento ($11.50) and prawn tempura udon ($12.50). Most of the items in my bento were taken from the fried food bar at the front counter - it consisted of a piece of sweet potato tempura, slice of seaweed tempura, two pieces of Korean gyoza, a small dim sim, a slice of sweet potato, a small okonomiyaki pancake and two chicken drumsticks, with a little bit of salad and rice. The okonomiyaki and dim sim were a bit stale from left out for too long, everything else tasted ok. A quick and affordable feed, and I'll consider coming back again for takeaway or a quick bite as I live really close.
First time I ever tried Korean!. I only ended up at this place as it was across the road from the YHA I was staying at. I almost went for Dominos but thankfully, I had second thoughts as I was out to try all the Asian food i could get my hands on... living 2 hours away in Morwell which has zero good Asian places, you have to visit the city in order to get your Asian fix!
I walked right in and was seated immediately. I had never had Korean food before but what the hell, I thought, I might as well give it a go. I decided upon the sizzling bbq platter once I had established that it wasn't a spicy dish... any chilli or curry, and I'm out for the count. I also asked the very friendly waitress to hold the Miso soup. The platter didn't take long to cook up and it came out with a bowl of sticky white rice and a little dish of picked vegetables. I had to ask for a fork but once was instantly provided without a raised eyebrow.
The platter was spitting and sizzling as it was placed on my table and the aroma was absolutely delicious!! The beef was sliced paperthin and just fell apart in my mouth, the flavor coating every pore of my tongue! I honestly haven't had such a great Asian dish in probably a few years! The plain rice was a great accompanying dish as it didn't compete with the flavor of the beef and the pickled vegetables were just right in order to give the dish a little zing every now and again.
As a size 20 fat girl, the dish was actually too much for me to finish by myself and I would advise any couples to just get an additional bowl of rice and go from there.
I will definately be back to try their Japanese curry and maybe a couple of bento boxes... in about 3 months time.
Been to Tokyo Maki more times than I can count - Highly Recommended!. I'll set the context: Great Japanese and Korean BBQ food at great pricing.
The service I have always found superb. Kevin runs a great restaurant (yes, that's right I have been that often. I know the owner by name now). Very attentive.
Cannot understand some of the negative reviews as i've never experienced anything described in those reviews :/
If you're expecting the service and food one would receive at Nobu (yes, i've dined there, again many times) then you cannot compare the two.
Great cheap eat if you want to organise an affordable dinner for a work group or friends!
Service is friendly, the place has a nice little buzz with at least half the tables always full and a fairly quick turnover. We’ll come again as it’s not too far a drive from where we are, but it’s probably more of a place you’d try if you happen to be nearby – it’s not exactly close to anything. Having said that, if you’re at Crown and contemplating getting Japanese food from their food court, I’d suggest taking a short walk to Tokyo Maki for a guaranteed good meal.
So tasty. Tokyo Maki never seems to disappoint. Passionate chefs never cease to provide great dishes.
Generous serves and value for money. The meal wasn't rushed like some places and the atmosphere was great. Lots of locals which means your at the right place.
Decent food at reasonable price. Service was ok, the male staff did come up as if he's a bit unfriendly but I think it's just his way cause he was pretty chatty asking about how was our food when I come up to pay.
Absolutely lovely warm little Japanese cafe. We are regulars here now, yes- they may be understaffed when cafe gets busier however they have never been in any way rude although they may appear so due to lack of "fake beaming smiles" that many other Asian places do but then again that don't mean anything to us.
Foodwise- Once you figure the things on menu, you will be hooked on to it, and you will find ourselves coming back for more.
Our favourite picks being:
Spicy Yakidori, octopus balls, curry chicken, yaki udon, and freshly made lobster-avocado sushi + cooked tuna sushi, miso soup, kimchi......washed down with cold sake!
One of the cafés in the city that we wouldn't miss for the world every other week for a dine out.
Great food. Ate the Mozzarella Teppanyaki dish. Biased service, if you're a westerner it's great, but as an Asian sharing a meal, you get treated differently. At least that was my observation, otherwise great food!
What an amazing dinner we had here last night! We happened to walk past Tokyo Maki and decided it was time for some Japanese! The menu selection was HUGE and the menus very professional! By far the best place for Japanese in Melbourne. Very well priced and the service is the best I have had in any restaurant for a long time! Everything brought over on plates and trays!! Good work guys, keep it up!
Cheap and chearful. This is a great place for a cheap, fresh Asian meal. You can BYO and it's reasonable to buy a bottle there. Highly recommend the Chicken Terryaki Don.
Food is good here with bigger more refined setting but I prefer the smaller store on king st. I guess it depends where the boss is as today the boss wasn't in, and didn't get to try the sushi as the sushi chef was out. Sukiyaki is delicious
I got the sizzles. Very friendly staff (couldn't be nicer), Food is fantastic and doesn't burn a hole in your wallet. The chili sizzling plates are amazing and has a very relaxed atmosphere for a week night dinner out. A lot better than some other ones I've tried around Melbourne, that end up costing 2-3 times the amount of money.
4.5 / 5
Simple. Had takeaway lobster roll with avocato and miso soup. Cheap, nice and simple.
Very friendly staff

Cheap n tasty. Lovely little casual place, friendly staff and good food for an even better price.
Had the chilli kara age bento box which came with the chicken, rice, salad, 3 pieces of vege tempura and a chicken wing. Also had many of the entrees. Loved
everything, the dumplings in particular..soy dipping sauce is really nice too.
Will go back to try more.
Not bad at all. Been to it twice.
Had their bento boxes, oyaka don, katsu don and okonomiyaki. Not bad.
Love the ambiance.
Has $5 happy hour beers (we seem to miss the hours though).
Not bad.
My happy place.. I'm sick of cheap food shops offering really fatty deep fried food. This place has a large menu and makes it easier to order something that you actually want to eat. It's got a cute decor inside and on nice days we get takeaway and go eat in flsgstaff gardens across the road.
My favourite take away shop. Great customer service, fantastic quality and authentic Japanese food from Japanese owners. Also pretty cheap for the amount you get. Very happy that I live close to such a great place to eat.
Love this place ! Great to pop into when you are wanting a quick bite to eat! Really good customer service also, always feel welcomed :)
Always fresh and delicious. I eat here a couple of times a week. I mostly have sushi rolls or sometimes bento or ramen. I love the place. The food is prepared fresh and is really tasty, and the service is fast and friendly. Oh and a special thanks for rarely using avocado in the suchi rolls - I am allergic and so I get lots of choice on which ones to have. Spicy Tuna and Chilli Chicken are the best!
I love here. All the food I ordered was delicious. Even when I called to make a reservation at the night, they responded quickly. He kindly explained the menu and taught me how to reheat it for takeaway. When I said I came from afar, He thanked me and gave me their candy. If I go to the city again, I will definitely go back 👍👍
I went to tonight with my friend and it was absolutely delicious! We had the sashimi boat, soft shell crab roll and sides of crispy seaweed and sweet potato… so good! I had the brown rice green tea presented in a very cute teapot, where my friend had a matcha latte. It was great value for money, good portion size and friendly service. ~ Angelina

This place is the most AMAZING restaurant in Melbourne as far as I'm concerned. The service is always amazing, the staff are wonderful and the food is to DIE for.
I highly recommend the sashimi boats!
This restaurant is extremely nice! The food is scrumptious. And the service is good. The staff are friendly. I recommend to go this restaurant!
The food was great, and with friendly staff and food came to the table quite quickly too. Will definitely visit again!
Best ever! I ended up having Nigiri at the end cuz I fell in love with Sashimi and Champong here (both are top notch in Mel). I’ve been to Korea and Japan many times and find this restaurant as good as there.
More improtantly, the owner and staff are so nice and friendly! By far the best experience. I’m gonna be here next week again.
This came quite recommended from my colleague… dined in for a 🥘 dinner recently.. Food was very great and liked the portion size offered. I’m not generally someone who goes for a Beverage after dinner, but the options here were really great and my friends and us enjoyed having it. Especially the citron tea ☕️ with fruit and honey was a great choice. Recommend this one for a try ..really felt going back again for a lunch 🍱 once as well.
